Large mixed-use development proposed for Fairview Avenue property Brookfield’s Village Board will vote on awarding $300,000 in TIF funds to developer

The distinct triangle-shaped property at the intersection of Fairview and Sunnyside Avenues could be turned into a mixed-use building with luxury apartments and commercial space.

“This is a very exciting project,” said Village President Michael J. Garvey at the Oct. 9 village board meeting. The property is in a great location in Brookfield’s downtown area and has garnered the attention of many locals, he added.

The proposal includes building two, four-story, multi-unit buildings with 31 housing units and 6,000 square-feet of commercial space, including space for

one restaurant. Apartments would have two bedrooms and two bathrooms and onsite parking.

To cover development costs, including the acquisition of an adjacent Brookfield zoo-owned property, developer and property owner Martin McDonough is requesting $300,000 from the village’s Grand Boulevard TIF funds.

Village Manager Tim Wiberg said the village’s Economic Development Commission discussed the proposal and recommended its approval at their last meeting.

McDonough initially presented the development proposal for his property at 8291 Fairview Ave. It did not include plans to develop the garage owned by the Brookfield Zoo that sits next to his property.

In discussions with the village, the idea of expanding the development to the zoo-owned property was proposed by the village, McDonough’s attorney Andrea Crowley said. McDonough is willing to do so if the village can financially support development costs covered by TIF funds, Crowley added. Otherwise, McDonough

would only build the development on the lot he owns.

Wiberg said all costs presented by the developer are TIF-eligible.

Preliminary renderings show some residential units would have balconies and the building would have a rooftop terrace.

Renderings are yet to be updated to include the zoo-owned property, Crowley said.

To ensure the developer delivers the proposed design, the village’s attorney and petitioner’s attorney would sign an agreement to specify approved design materials, building construction types and commercial uses, Wiberg said.

The village board will approve the TIF funding request at the next village board meeting on Oct. 23 If awarded, the development proposal will be reviewed by the Zoning Commission. Wiberg said that to ensure the developer delivers the proposed design, the village’s attorney and petitioner’s attorney would sign an agreement to specify approved design materials, building construction types and commercial uses.

A rendering gives a sense of how spacious and naturalistic the new outdoor primate habitats at Brookfield Zoo will be, and just how close zoo visitors will be able to get to the animals separated only by panes of thick glass.

ZOO DONATION Expanding habitats from page 1 The zoo received a $40 million donation in September, that most that has ever been contributed to the organization. The bulk of the gift, donated anonymously, will be used to construct new habitats that make up a project called “Tropical Forests,” according to zoo director Dr. Michael Adkesson.

Future phases within the upcoming master plan have not yet been announced, although Adkesson said the zoo is looking to grow animal habitat space and to continue as an “exciting destination” for locals in the region.

“We’re looking to develop really dynamic, engaging guest experiences to bring people into the zoo, get them close to our animals where they can make that connection with wildlife, and hopefully hear the conservation messages that we’re sharing about what they can do to help wildlife and

wild places,” Adkesson said.

According to a news release, the anonymous donor is “a family with a long history of support” for the Brookfield Zoo, which is managed by the Chicago Zoological Society. The donor has a commitment to wildlife and habitat conservation.

“We are just incredibly grateful for the generosity that they’ve come forward with,” said Adkesson, who also serves as the Chicago Zoological Society’s president and CEO. “It’s exciting for the future of the organization and their faith in what we’re trying to do as an organization and what we’re looking to accomplish over the next 15 years.”

“We are incredibly grateful and incredibly humbled by the enormous gift that was given to the zoo and are hopeful that we will be able to continue to grow that philanthropic support base for the zoo to help us achieve this vision of where we’re headed,” Adkesson added.

The “Tropical Forests” project is expected to open in spring 2025, while a new master plan for the zoo is expected to be released in early 2024.

Riverside guide reminds renters of their rights and responsibilities The village provides a guide for new and existing renters

New and existing residents Riverside tenants can find consolidated information about their rights, responsibilities and other useful information in the village’s latest reference guide for renters.

The two-page document outlines some of the basic responsibilities of tenants and landlords mandated by the village’s code.

Landlords are required to provide a certain level of service to tenants, including providing adequate heat, maintenance and water services. According to village code,

landlords must furnish heat from Sept.

15 to June 1, with minimum day temperatures for day and night times. By law, the minimum temperature during the day is 68 degrees from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. and 63 degrees at night from 10:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m.

Tenants must comply will any obligations included in their lease. They must also keep the property clean and in sanitary conditions. If any repairs or improvements need to be made, tenants should cooperate with landlords.

The guide also includes information about local tools designed to protect tenants and property owners of rental housing properties. In 2021, the village implemented a rental registration program requiring all multi-unit rental properties to register annually with the village. Multiunit rental properties are those with three or more residential units.

a year and individual units are inspected once in a three-year period. In these inspections, the village ensures housing complies with safety and code standards.

At the county level, the Residential Tenant Landlord ordinance sets protections for suburban Cook County renters. Among others, it prohibits landlords from locking out tenants without a proper eviction process. It also requires landlords to provide pest control services for bed bug infestations. Landlords are also protected from property destruction and non-payment.

Using the renter’s guide, residents can also find information about parking in Riverside. All vehicles housed or registered to a Riverside address must display a current vehicle sticker on the front windshield.

Overnight parking in village streets or public property is prohibited, but guests can pay for parking and use the village’s parking lot at the intersection of Barry-

point and Bloomingbank Roads.

Residents must also register their pets with the village of Riverside by purchasing pet tags for dogs and cats. Registration and payment are available on the village’s website.

Progress Park to host Christmas tree for second year It’s not yet Halloween, but trustees say Brookfield’s Christmas tree will stay at Progress Park — although Grossdale Station could be a future site

Brookfield trustees agreed to keep the village’s Christmas tree at Progress Park for a second straight year.

The decision came after a presentation given by parks and recreation director Luke Gundersen at the Sept. 25 Committee of the Whole meeting. Trustees reached a consensus based on Gundersen’s recommendation to place the tree at Progress

Park, though some board members expressed interest in Grossdale Station for the future.

Before 2022, the tree was situated at 8 Corners Veterans Memorial Circle. Renovations to the fountain in the circle resulted in the tree moving to Progress Park last year. Even after the new fountain’s completion earlier this year, the tree cannot be placed back at the 8 Corners circle.

Village President Michael Garvey said the “prudent thing to do” was to move the location of the tree to avoid damaging the fountain and voiding its warranty.

“Progress Park was the clear second choice, just because of its central location,” Garvey said. “People are familiar with it from last year. There’s some infrastructure in place already in terms of the anchors. So I think based on staff ’s recommendation and the board input, that was kind of the second best place to put it.”

lage to use the area for the tree and other purposes, according to Garvey.

Garvey said the tree’s positioning at Progress Park last year went “very well.”

“I think it was a good location,” Garvey said. “A lot of people. There’s a lot of vehicle traffic and a lot of foot traffic. They could see it and it worked out well for our holiday celebration and tree lighting.”

Gundersen’s presentation at the Committee of the Whole meeting included five options for the tree’s location: Progress Park, Kiwanis Park, Grossdale Station, a downtown triangular site by Fairview Avenue and Brookfield Avenue, and Veterans Memorial Park.

Gundersen recommended Progress Park for 2023, on the basis that logistics at the location, like a tree stand and anchors, are already set.

While the board agreed to keep the tree at Progress Park for the year, Grossdale Station, although it currently lacks the infrastructure to host the tree, emerged as an option for the future that garnered interest from trustees.

Trustee Edward Côté said at the meeting that he liked the Grossdale site because it would be visible while traveling on the train and might attract riders to visit the village.

“I really think that would bring a nice beauty to the town,” Côté said.

Trustee Nicole Gilhooley said Grossdale Station would be a “great photo opportunity,” and its central location would tie together holiday activities throughout Brookfield. She also said at the meeting that the tree’s presence at Progress Park could detract from the nearby fountain.

Côté also asked if a tree in Ehlert Park could be decorated to “also have something on the south side” of the village.

Garvey said Grossdale Station is “a possibility going forward.” The site would require some level of investment to have the proper electrical power and anchoring for the tree.

“In the upcoming budget talks, the village is going to talk about how we might improve that whole area of the historical society and the Grossdale Station,” Garvey said.

Property to get façade makeover through PIP funds Brookfield Dental awarded nearly $20K, about half the renovation cost

The Brookfield Dental studio is the latest local business to benefit from the village’s property improvement grant program after being awarded nearly $20,000 to renew its look. It is located within the Eight Corners Memorial Circle.

The village board unanimously approved owner Dr. Shikha Kapoor’s request at the

Oct. 9 board meeting, following a recommendation from the Economic Development Commission.

The façade of the dental practice office will boast a contemporary look with new wall and window signage, new wall paint in varying shades of black, the removal of awnings, a new main door, translucent window decals and exterior light fixtures.

The total cost of the upgrade is estimated to be $39,000.

Currently, the tri-faceted building has some outdated awnings and a peeling and weathered appearance. With the renovations, Kapoor hopes to rejuvenate it and convey an image of a modern and active dental practice matching the office’s interior, documents submitted to the village show.

Kapoor requested funding support from

the village’s property improvement program, which funds up to 50% of eligible improvement or development costs for commercial-use properties. The program was designed to assist property owners and tenants in making exterior improvements to their properties, making the village’s commercial areas more attractive and visually appealing to local residents and customers.

Kapoor’s dental studio was awarded nearly half of the overall costs and will be reimbursed by the village for the lesser of 50% of the approved construction estimate, the actual construction cost or $19,910.50, village documents show. Once renovations are completed, Kapoor must properly maintain the property without change for a five-year period.

RBHS college-readiness and learning-growth scores tick upward Still, school board members raise concerns

More members of the Riverside Brookfield High School Class of 2023 met the College Board’s college readiness standards than the previous year’s graduating class according to performance data presented by administrators at the Oct. 10 meeting of the Riverside Brookfield Township High School District 208 school board.

More than three-quarters of the members of the Class of 2023 who began high school as freshman at RBHS met or exceeded the 480 score on the Evidence Based Reading and Writing portion of the SAT that the College Board considers the benchmark for college readiness. That’s a slight increase from the 71% of students who met

or exceeded the benchmark last year. It’s in line with the results for 2021 seniors at 75% and for 2020 at 76%.

In math, 59% of the RBHS seniors who began at RBHS as freshmen scored at or above 530 on the math portion of the SAT last year, the College Board’s readiness benchmark in math. That’s an increase from 50% of students in 2022, and two percentage points higher than in 2021. But it’s below 2020’s performance, where 63% tested at or above expectations.

School board member Laura Hruska pointed out that the data only comes from about 75% of the senior class because it excludes students who transferred into RBHS. Hruska said that makes the data misleading.

“It doesn’t give an accurate picture,” Hruska said.

Assistant Principal for Curriculum and Instruction Kylie Lindquist explained that the data excludes transfer students because the administration is trying to measure the effectiveness of instruction at RBHS and wants to measure the growth in learning among students who have been at RBHS for their entire high school experience. Board member Ryan VenHorst eventually became a bit exasperated with Hruska’s persistent claim that the data was incomplete.

“It gives an accurate picture of what we asked for,” VenHorst said.

improved from their results on the STAR test they took in eighth grade, in ERW but did not meet the college readiness because they entered high school below the expected level. That’s a small increase from 2022 (26%) but a large increase from 2021 and 2020 (14%in both years).

In math, 35% of students met the expected growth level but did not meet the college readiness standard. Those numbers increased from 25% in 2022, 29% in 2021, and 22%in 2020, indicating that RBHS is doing a better job with below-grade-level students.

The report outlined action steps taken at RBHS to boost student performance, including adding more reading intervention for freshman and sophomores, literacy support for co-taught classes, algebra support for targeted freshmen and targeted pull-outs from other classes for added instruction in English, and math help for stu-

dents who enter RBHS with below benchmark scores. RBHS is now also offering a free SAT test preparation class for those who score below benchmark on the PSAT test taken in the sophomore year.

For graduation rates, the data showed that nearly 97% of those who just completed their freshman year at RBHS were on track to graduate in four years. The state considers freshmen on track if they complete their freshman year without failing more than one semester in a core class. That figure is a slight increase from previous years.

But board member Lorena Gasca downplayed the significance of the freshmen on track metric noting that a student could considered on track even if that student got all Ds as a freshman.

“We would be naïve to believe that on track means that they are college or career ready,” Gasca said.

Drug possession and identity theft warrants North Riverside officers visited a woman’s address who has two outstanding statewide warrants for DUI drugs and possession and for identity theft.

One of the officers had previously interacted with the woman during a traffic stop, where she had provided a false name. Later police were able to identify the woman.

Upon arrival at the residence, they found the front screen door open. A male answered the door and invited officers inside, where they discovered the woman holding her infant child.

The officer informed her of the two McHenry County warrants: one for DUI drugs and possession of cannabis, FTA, and the other for identity theft/ use of credit card/debit card/security.

Each with bond amounts of $5,000 and $30,000 respectively.

The woman cooperated, gathered her medication, and left with police. She was subsequently booked and held for a McHenry County bond hearing, followed by transportation to bond court where the McHenry County Sheriff ’s Office took custody of her.

These items were obtained from North Riverside Police Department reports dated Oct. 10-16 and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Anyone named in these reports has only been charged with a crime and cases have not yet been adjudicated. We report the race of a suspect only when a serious crime has been committed, the suspect is still at large, and police have provided us with a detailed physical description of the suspect as they seek the public’s help in making an arrest.

e are enthused about transit-oriented housing developments. We like the added density these smaller, in-fill projects bring. We value mixed-use projects that blend new apartments and commercial space, when it is logical.

What we often aren’t enthused about when we look at what gets built is the architecture. Dull. And built with materials that are not made for the ages.

A project currently moving quickly toward approval in Brookfield checks our initial boxes. It is very near the Metra tracks. With 31 upscale apartments and ground-floor space designed for a good-sized restaurant, the project brings more density, more people to Brookfield’s downtown.

What is most intriguing though is that the design on what is an odd triangle-shaped parcel is bold, handsome, distinctive. Which is likely why you have Village President Michael Garvey calling the project “exciting” and noting that it has the attention of local residents.

The village is likely to pay developer Martin McDonough $300,000 out of the TIF to guarantee that the project not only includes parcels at Fairview and Sunnyside, which he currently owns, but to add a portion that now houses a garage owned by Brookfield Zoo. A good outcome on all fronts.

The weeds of standardized tests

Standardized school test scores are, at best, a mixed blessing. They offer an imperfect accountability for school districts. They provide a snapshot of a large group of students, and some less certain measure for subsets of those students. The tests have some value in discerning longer-term trends.

In the case of test results recently debated by the school board at Riverside Brookfield High School, we welcome one such trend that tells us the school, like others, is beginning to see a turn up from the academic declines brought on by COVID. The interesting debate at the board table was over exactly what it had directed the school’s administration to measure. The results reported at the Oct. 10 meeting tracked test results only for students who had begun their freshman year at the school. The logic a majority of the board argued for was that in excluding students who transferred into RB after freshman year, the results offered a clear picture of the value that the school brought to students who had benefitted from four years of instruction.

Board member Laura Hruska said that was a misleading subset of students to track and that it created overall results which did not reflect the full student body.

We are unclear why the data cannot be reported both ways. It would seem seeing those results side-by-side would bring a more nuanced response from both administrators and the school board.

Wilma Pecka, 99 Active Mater Christi parishioner Wilma R. Pecka (nee Zelibor), 99, of North Riverside, died on Oct. 16, 2023. Born on March 8, 1924, she was active in Mater Christi Church, the Tabernacle Guild, and was a former parish Woman of the Year.

Wilma was the wife of the late Edward J. Pecka; the mother of Nancy (the late Jeffrey) Rokos, Noreen (Steve Imig) Sorensen, and Diane (John) Obremski; the grandmother of Mark (Anne-Marie) and David (Shelley) Rokos, Eric, Karl and the late Ryan Sorensen, and Steven and Brian (Mary Beth) Obremski; and the great-grandmother of seven.

Visitation will be held at Mater Christi Church, 2401 S. 10th Ave., North Riverside, on Oct. 18 from 10 a.m. until the funeral Mass at 11 a.m., followed by entombment at Queen of Heaven Cemetery.

Tim Brewer, 63 Youth baseball coach, fisherman Tim Brewer, 63, of Brookfield, died on Oct. 10, 2023. Born on March 25, 1960 to Donald and Barbara (Vondra) Brewer in Chicago, the third of five children, he was the “True Brew” middle child of the Brewer clan. He made TIM BREWER lifelong friends with many of his classmates, loved coaching his children in baseball, and spent many happy hours fishing with his best buddies. Some of his fondest memories were taking fishing trips to the boundary waters in Minnesota and Canada.

His greatest joy was sharing his love of baseball and fishing with his sons.

Born on March 28, 1953, in Riverside, he was a 1971 graduate of Riverside-Brookfield High School. He earned a B.S. degree from the University of Illinois Chicago and worked his entire career in the sheet metal industry. He served as a council member at Ascension Lutheran Church in Riverside and was an avid golfer, bowler and 16-inch softball player.

David was the son of the late Einar and the late Ruth (nee Strid) Gustafson; the brother of Mel (Kris), Phil (Sue) and Glenn (Carol); uncle of Jim (Lynn) Gustafson, Cherie Gustafson, Meg (Jonathan Solomon) Gustafson, Laura (Craig) Cypress, Julie McCarthy, Elizabeth (Matt) Schommer, and the late Kari Gustafson; and great-uncle of Owen, Carter, Libby, Archie and Camille.

CHICAGO – As lawmakers prepare to return to Springfield later this month for their annual two-week fall veto session, advocates are pushing for a measure that would require law enforcement to take guns away from people hit with domestic violence orders of protection.

In May, Democrats in the Illinois House passed a bill including that provision, but the Senate didn’t take up the proposal before the end of the General Assembly’s spring session. A little over a month later in early July, Chicago resident Karina Gonzalez, her 15-year-old daughter Daniela and 18-year-old son Manny were allegedly shot by Gonzalez’ husband Jose Alvarez after she was granted an order of protection against him.

Karina and Daniela died from their wounds, while Manny escaped and survived.

Under existing law, when petitioning a court for a domestic violence order of protection, a victim can ask for 18 specific “remedies,” including the revocation of the alleged abuser’s Firearm Owner Identification (FOID) card. But state law is less than clear on how a FOID card should be surrendered – or forcibly taken by law enforcement if need be.

Once a FOID card is revoked due to an order of protection, any firearms a person owns are supposed to be transferred to someone else with a valid FOID card for the duration of the protective order. But Amanda Pyron, executive director of Chicago-based domestic violence advocacy organization The Network, said sometimes guns are transferred to someone who lives with the abuser, meaning the guns are never “actually relinquish(ed).”

Additionally, Pyron said the firearm remedy is being applied inconsistently across Illinois. A 2022 report from The Network found that in 2021, nearly 11,000 Illinoisans had their FOID cards revoked, but only 4,000 actually filed paperwork with the Illinois State Police showing firearms had been transferred to an-

Hirschauer said Illinois’ current order of protection process is “failing too many domestic violence survivors.”

“An order of protection is a key tool to help survivors, especially as they try to leave a violent relationship,” Hirschauer said Thursday.

“When an order of protection is granted with the firearm remedy, that gun needs to be removed from the home immediately. We cannot have any ambiguity about this process.

The stakes are too high.”

Advocates on Thursday cited a 2003 study that found that in domestic violence cases, an abuser’s access to a firearm was associated with a five-fold increased risk of homicide.

According to reporting by the Chicago Sun-Times, Gonzalez was granted a domestic

card, but closed the window he was speaking to officers through when they officers tried to give it back.

When Cook County sheriff ’s deputies went to officially serve Alvarez his order of protection the day after police visited the house, he wasn’t home, according to Sun-Times reporting. Law enforcement never verified that he gave up his gun, and Gonzalez and her children moved back in with Alvarez a few days later after he promised to go to rehab.

Roughly a week later, Alvarez allegedly shot the three of them. He was charged with two counts of first-degree murder, along with one count of attempted murder and a single count of aggravated discharge of a firearm.

His next court date is in November.

RB cross country enjoys clean sweep at muddy MSC Meet Marrs captures third straight title as boys team takes places 1-7

Riverside Brookfield High School senior girls cross-country runners Lily Kocourek and Maria Dalton won’t soon forget their final Metro Suburban Conference Meet on Saturday. There was more than enough water and mud from rain throughout the Westmont High School 3.0-mile course.

But there were also smiles. Both earned their first all-conference honors, and the Bulldogs won their first conference title since 2017, Blair Jensen’s first season as head coach.

The state-ranked RBHS boys, meanwhile, easily defended their title as their seven entries were the top-seven finishers. Senior Cooper Marrs won his third straight MSC individual title.

“It was awesome. I loved running it and all the mud,” Kocourek said. “There was no one around you so you were just doing it for yourself. It was fun.”

“Looking back, it was probably the most memorable race, but when you’re in the moment, it’s a little tough,” Dalton said.

“I’m super-proud of myself and my team, of course, because this is a tough race. It’s a battle, mental game.”

Junior Gianna Gelb (21:10) was second to Westmont sophomore Kyla Babb (20:36) and Kocourek (22:01), Dalton (22:18), senior Maia Nelson (22:43) and sophomore Rebecca Dosek (22:48) were fourth through seventh for top-10 all-conference honors.

Junior Jorie Eggers (23:57) and sophomore Mia Alcaraz (24:11) were 13th and 14th.

As runners dodged puddles and avoided slipping, many spectators watched from their cars. Each lap and the finish were along the fence by the parking lot.

“It’s hard to run fast [in this]. You can’t go by times. But I would say probably one of our better [races],” Jensen said. “They kind of held their own place. [Our top five] was top seven. I would say it was a good race. You’re lucky to get through this, no one gets hurt.”

The final year for the Bulldogs (19 points) in the MSC was with second-place Elmwood Park (47), Ridgewood and Westmont.

With fewer teams, top 10 was all-conference versus top-12 in 2022. Last season, Gelb was fourth with Kocourek (16th) and Dalton (19th) in the top 20 and Nelson 27th.

“I’ve been working toward [all-conference] since sophomore year so it’s great to actually do it and be top 10,” Kocourek said.

“It looked like Lily really found her game. She was sick for a while so she’s getting back,” Jensen said.

Gelb is a two-time individual state qualifier in Class 2A. This year the girls are in 3A as well as the boys, the defending 2A state champions.

The Bulldogs compete at the 3A regional Saturday at Lyons Township’s south campus. The girls race at 9 a.m. and the boys at 10 a.m.

On Saturday, Gelb was three seconds from third after two miles and finished 15 seconds ahead of third.

“It was cold and so slippery. The first time running through, it was already muddy and then the second mile it was even worse. I couldn’t feel my hands the entire time,” Gelb said. “I was just focused on passing people wherever I was and I was happy with wherever I was going to finish because this race was hard. But I think my goal was to get maybe top three.”

The boys race resembled a workout. The

Bulldogs, ranked No. 16 in 3A by ILXCTF. com, remained a tight pack until the very end with the 6-foot-4 Marrs sporting an RBHS cross country knit hat for the first time in a race.

Marrs won in 17:16, followed by junior Brady Norman (17:20), senior Jack O’Brien (17:20), junior Asa Kahle (17:21), seniors Will Kallas (17:22) and Brennan Lester (17:23) and junior Diego Lopez-Molina (17:31).

“A nice, sloppy day. Just solid fun running cross country. Can’t have it better than this, really,” Marrs said.

“The other [titles] felt like I really stuck to the race plan. This one, just out here having fun running.”

“The consensus was 2½, 2¾ (miles together) and then every man for himself,” RBHS coach Jack Brady added. “It was nice, 1 through 7. Everybody gets all-conference. Everybody’s cold but nobody’s gotten hurt.”

O’Brien (2nd), Kallas (5th) and Lester (6th) also were all-conference in 2022. Kahle (14th) was 7.4 seconds from 12th and Norman missed the race because of illness.

“It was fun running in a group like that,” Lester said. “It was definitely one of those races where everybody’s happy. We’re in good, healthy shape right now and we’re all just glad we get to run together and nobody’s missing this year.”

LT’s Silver title hopes thwarted by York Despite dynamic Greer, Jackson TDs, Lions fall 24-14

Lyons Township High School senior Caleb Greer continues to be a big-time playmaker. As a defensive back, he’s returned two interceptions for touchdowns.

In Saturday’s Homecoming game against York, as a wide receiver, he connected with senior quarterback Ryan Jackson for a 70-yard touchdown reception with 4:15 remaining. They barely missed each other at the same spot just past midfield three plays earlier.

“I knew I had man-to-man [coverage] with the linebacker. I told [Jackson] let’s run it again. I believe you can get it to me,” said Greer of his fourth TD reception. “I beat [my defender] to the inside and Ryan was able to get the ball to me, as he always does.”

The Lions had several big plays Saturday but most happened while playing from behind. The result was a 24-14 loss that ended their chances for at least sharing their first West Suburban Conference Silver Division

title since 2010. The Lions (5-3, 4-2 in Silver) can clinch a playoff berth with a win Friday at Proviso East (1-7) in the regularseason finale.

York (7-1) now shares the Silver lead at 4-1 with Glenbard West (6-2), which beat LTHS 13-10 on Sept. 16.

“It was a big game for us,” Greer said.

“I feel like it got to our heads a little bit.

We started worrying about who we were playing more than executing what we had planned.”

Jackson was 15-for-24 passing for 200 yards, 85 to Travis Stamm and 77 to Greer, and he rushed for 69.

On the Lions’ first drive of the second half, Jackson had a beautiful 49-yard TD run up the middle after a fake handoff to Danny Carroll. But York already owned a 14-0 halftime lead, including a 24-yard TD pass just 55.4 seconds before halftime.

Caleb’s TD reception came after Jack Cheney’s interception in the end zone.

LTHS closed to 24-14 and Davey Paulus recovered Tommy Newcomb’s onside kick at the York 47. However, Jackson’s deep pass was intercepted at the 2 with 3:40 left. The Dukes ran out the clock after a controversial first-down spot at their 12 kept the drive going.

I was proud of the way we fought. I thought we ran out of time a little bit,” LTHS coach Jon Beutjer said. “[York] beat us and were better than us.

But there were a lot of good things that we did and things we’re going to build off of.”

On the first two possessions, York drove 67 and 56 yards but were held to 31- and 37yard field goals. The Dukes’ first TD came after getting the ball at the Lions’ 45 with 1:46 left in the first half after an LTHS punt into a vicious wind.

In the second quarter, the Lions failed to convert third and fourth-and-8 from the York 37 with back-to-back incomplete passes, the second with a declined illegal

procedure penalty.

The Lions’ drive late in the third quarter opened with a 35-yard pass to Stamm. They reached the York 21 but a fourth-and-12 pass to Jack McQueeney was stopped two yards short.

Eddie Tuerk and Roman Sosnovyy combined for three tackles for loss. McQueeney and Cheney had nine tackles each. Noah Pfafflin played linebacker despite breaking his left wrist in practice Thursday.

“We showed little spurts of [playing well],” Beutjer said. “It was just one of those games that we really wanted but we didn’t deserve to win. We didn’t make enough plays.”

RBHS volleyball grabs MSC title in perfect fashion Bulldogs defeat Westmont again

Riverside Brookfield High School freshman Mackenzie Sloger has enjoyed quite a ride in her first girls volleyball season. The 5-foot-10 outside hitter is starting on varsity.

She also contributed to a Metro Suburban Conference championship.

“Even when I started in tryouts, I could tell we were going to have a great year,” Slo-

ger said. “I feel like [conference] really was a good representation of the team. We’re like a family. We just work together really well.

It was [coach Caitlin Staib-Lipinski’s] main goal when we first started pre-season, too.”

With the title already clinched, the Bulldogs added the exclamation point, Oct. 11, with a 25-16, 25-9 victory at Westmont to finish 6-0.

Junior Sofia Owens (7 kills), sophomore Claire Cameron (12 assists), Sloger and senior Emily Organ (5 kills each), seniors Kelley Tyler (7 digs) and Annabel Krueger (7 assists, 4 digs) and junior Elaina Harazin (3 kills) were among key contributors for the

Bulldogs (19-14).

“It’s not easy to win a conference, first of all, and then to go 6-0, we worked hard to get that,” Staib-Lipinski said.

“If you can go 6-0 in a conference, whatever conference you’re in, that’s something to be really proud of and we try to work through things during those matches.”

This year’s MSC is down to three other teams (Elmwood Park, Ridgewood and Westmont) with everyone playing each other home and away. RBHS only lost one set to second-place Elmwood Park.

They won the MSC Red Division title in 2020, when teams played each other only

once. Last year, RBHS and Bishop McNamara tied for first with one loss but the MSC recognized the Irish as Red champions for winning their head-to-head match.

Organ has won a conference title in softball. She returned to the program this season after focusing on softball as a junior and verbally committing to Bradley.

“I really do love playing volleyball. It’s a totally different game than basketball, softball,” Organ said. “[Winning conference] was something definitely really special and from the beginning of the season that was one of our team goals. It was really cool to go 6-0 and winning all of our matches.”
