Through leg cramps, blown calls, and future collegiate star power, Riverside-Brookfield’s varsity football team (3-1) was able to pull off a miraculous come-from-behind win against Aurora Christian (3-1) on Sept. 20 in Aurora. RBHS quarterback Matthew Torres outdueled Aurora’s Ethan Hampton in the final quarter to capture the Bulldog’s third win of the season. “The sign of a good team is performing up to the top-tier of its skill sets regardless of the circumstances,” said RBHS head coach Brendan Curtin. “Chasing points, not getting calls … we know that is going to happen on the road, but I am so proud of the boys and how they responded to adversity.” In a game that featured no dull moments, Riverside-Brookfield led last Friday’s theatrics off with

a blocked punt returned for a touchdown. Aurora Christian’s punter/running back, Josh Dornink, bobbled a low snap and was unable to get off a clean punt. The ball sailed 10 yards and rolled 20 more to the front of the left pylon. The Bulldogs’ Santana Diaz grabbed the ball and walked in for a touchdown. After the missed PAT, the score was 6-0. That is when the first half turned into the Ethan Hampton show. Throughout the entire night, Hampton showed off his pinpoint accuracy and pro-level poise that has caught the attention of college scouts. After a lackluster opening drive from the run game, Hampton led the Eagles down to RB’s 20-yard line. With 6:00 left in the first quarter, Hampton threw a screen to wide receiver Danny Naw that appeared to be a backward pass. Naw missed the catch, and RBHS recovered the football. However, the officials ruled it a forward pass, and it proved to be costly for the Bulldogs. Hampton would eventually throw a five-yard strike to running back Jack Certa to end the drive. ou know, I really thought 2014 was going to be the last time I would cover high school sports. While the wall of the student publication at Oak Park and River Forest High School humorlessly reads that I was editor-inchief, I was just an awkward, skinny sports editor who mumbled his way through interviews and anxiety-inducing social interactions with athletes and coaches. My writing was messy, my ideas were all over the place, and I had one foot out the door as I prepared for college. Nonetheless, Dan Haley actually hired me to take on the role of sports editor at for the Landmark and its sister paper, Wednesday Journal. And I thank the universe every day he didn’t meet the insular man-child that was 2014 James Kay (apparently 2019 James Kay talks in the third-person ... hopefully 2024 James Kay will have that corrected). The one thing that always left a sour taste in my mouth when I look back at my time at OPRF is not putting everything I had into the sports beats I assigned myself. It wasn’t because I was failing to cover the teams I reported on but because of the tunnel vision I had, discussing only what happened on the field. After completing my sports studies minor, my radar for athletic leads started picking up the cultural impact sport has on our society. Katherine Switzer, Jack Sports Editor Johnson, James Wilkinson, John Carlos, Tommy Smith, Billy Jean King, Babe Didrikson, Dick Allen, and countless other athletes and sports figures have paved the way for people to participate in the purest form of meritocracy: sports. It seems insane to ignore such an important aspect: how our sports have been shaped on a national scale. As I take over for Marty Farmer, I hope to take an approach that emphasizes what is happening on and off the court on a local level. Don’t worry, I’ll still be writing up football recaps, frame-able for your student-athlete when they reminisce about the good ol’ days of high school football. But there is so much more to explore within our community that involves the entanglement of sports and culture. I also plan on creating new ways for you to consume the RiversideBrookfield Landmark sports section. The last two years, I have been podcasting about the NBA and WNBA (I host a show called The Skyhook, available on Apple Podcast and Spotify) and have been brought in to create multimedia content. Ideally, I will be creating short videos, and a podcast that will be produced into a digestible package so you can second-screen your sports news like we do with all of our media these days. I am here to tell you that my foot is no longer out the door. In fact, I am sitting comfortably on the couch, over-indulging on Whole Foods buffet mac and cheese. A less embarrassing way of me saying that: my line and email are open to all of you, day or night. If you have a story you think is important to our community, send it my way, and I will give it my full attention. There is nothing more important to me than making sure we have an even balance of coverage of our local sports teams. LTHS falls to Morton in Pepsico Showdown Lions boys soccer team humbled after 4-2 semifinals loss to top seed By JAMES KAY Sports Editor

After pushing their way to the semifinals at the Pepsico Showdown Series, Lyons Township’s varsity soccer team’s run at the championship ended in a 4-2 loss to Morton High School on Sept. 21 in Joliet. Going into the tournament, LTHS was the No. 4 seed, and had taken care of business against Solario on Sept. 14 and Bradley-Bourbonnais on Sept. 17. “We had a lot of opportunities to score, but like the No. 1 team does, they came back and responded,” said LTHS head coach Paul Labbato. “We came into this game thinking we could play with [Morton], and we are going to leave this place thinking we are as good as them and that on a different day maybe the result might be different.” Both teams engaged each other in a physical match that featured periodic rain, an unlevel field, and blatant attempts of flopping from Morton. Both teams struggled to get shots on goal through the hallway point in the first half at the Inwood Soccer Complex. The collective scoring drought ended when Morton split the LTHS defense on the left sideline. Lions goalie Bradley De Boer deflected Morton’s first shot, fell down, and forward Edwin Zizumbo finished off the play with a shot into the open net. LTHS started its comeback effort after captain Jake Fraser beat two defenders, and worked his way down the sideline. While attempting to cross the ball to the middle of the box, he was shouldered by the two Morton defenders drawing a penalty that Nick Novak slotted into the left bottom corner to tie the match at 1-1. Controversy arose when Morton, who had vehemently complained to the referees about the previous penalty called on them, received a penalty kick of their own a minute after Novak’s goal. Labbato, infuriated with the result of the play, tried to seek an explanation from the referees about their decision as the halftime whistle blew. “I just tried to get some clarification on the penalty kick,” said Labbato about his halftime meeting with the refs. “It was a big moment and a big call since that penalty kick gave them a lead going into the second half. That changed the mo-

For the first 20 minutes of the second half, it seemed like LTHS had taken back some of the momentum they had lost in the last few minutes of the first half. They opened the half with multiple shots on goal that Morton’s defense was barely able to fend off. That changed when Morton was called for another foul just a few feet outside of the box. Morton set up a wall of defenders but Lyons’ forward, Jake Luttrell, scored off a deflection from Morton’s goalie to tie the match up at 2-2. Morton went into attack mode after Luttrell’s goal and

was able to provide heavy offensive pressure the rest of the match. After LTHS’ Cesear Nieves had the ball stolen from him, Morton’s Juan Hernandez crossed the ball to teammate Cristian Perez for the third goal of the match for Morton. Down 3-2, the Lions shifted their formation upfield to go for the tie, but it ended up leaving them vulnerable for Zizumbo’s third goal with a few minutes left to play in the match. “It goes to show what we can do against the No. 1 team like Morton,” said Fraser after the match. “I felt like we held in there, but we just couldn’t put the ball in the back of the net. It’s a disappointing ending but they earned it.” Lyons Township will look to bounce back after the tournament loss when they visit Proviso West for a West Suburban Silver conference on Sept. 24 at 4:30 p.m.

The Friars lost their Chicago Catholic League/East Suburban Catholic Conference White Division opener on Sept. 20 at Joliet Catholic Academy (JCA), 49-14, the second week in a row they lost to reigning state champions. The Friars’ first offensive drive of the game ended with Joliet’s Jabril Williams intercepting a Kaden Cobb pass and returning it 93 yards for a touchdown. Fenwick’s head coach, Gene Nudo, questioned the call on the field.

“It really snowballed fast last night,” said Nudo in a phone call with Wednesday Journal the day after the game. “We drove the ball down to [Joliet’s] 20-yard line, and their cornerback intercepted the ball while he was on his knees. Outside of that, Joliet Catholic did what Joliet Catholic does. They pounded us with the football, and they are a very physical team.” Running backs Jordan Anderson (16 carries, 141 yards, 3 TDs) and Kenyetta Williams (12 carries, 91 yards) paced the Hilltoppers’ ground game, which amassed 319 yards. Quarterbacks Anthony Napolitano and Aidan Voss combined to toss three touchdown passes for JCA (2-2, 1-0 in the CCL/ ESCC White). “We had to pick our poison in putting together our strategy for the game,” said Nudo. “Knowing that Joliet Catholic likes to block nine guys and run the ball at you, we game-planned this week to stop them in the run game. They hit a couple of

open passes and that opened up the game for them.” For Fenwick, Cobb completed 16 passes in 25 attempts for 187 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. Danny Kent rushed for 82 yards on 14 carries, and Max Reese snagged seven receptions for 77 yards and a touchdown for the Friars (2-2, 0-1). “We did have some positive things going on, and we saw some growth from our younger guys in the spotlight,” said Nudo. “The seniors on this team do a terrific job of communicating with our youth and help them compete on the practice field. So we are going to have another opportunity again this week to continue to grow as a team.” Fenwick opens a three-game home stand Friday, Sept. 27 against Marist. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Triton College in River Grove.

Comeback brewing from page 17 off his defender on the sideline, and ran 45 yards untouched. After Hampton, who is also Aurora Christian’s kicker, converted the PAT, the Bulldogs trailed 14-6. Throughout the first half, there were moments where it looked like Riverside-Brookfield wasn’t going to piece it together on offense. After another failed series towards the end of the first quarter, Curtin caught the Eagles off guard on a fake punt on the 50-yard line with a direct snap to running back Eduardo Pena, who broke three tackles and gained a first down and 18 yards. Running back Luke Gentile would open the second quarter with a 23-yard run through the middle of the Aurora defense. Hampton would strike again on the next drive when he converted three fourth down attempts before setting up the Eagles in the red zone on the RBHS 5-yard line. After the Bulldogs stopped Aurora to force a fourth and five situation, Hampton rolled to his right and threw an off-balance six-yard touchdown across his body to wideout JP Jira. Hampton would miss the PAT which left the score at 20-13 with six minutes to go in the half. After another defensive stop by the Eagles, the half ended with Hampton hitting a 32-yard field goal with 20 seconds left to give the Eagles a 23-13 lead. With all the momentum going in favor of Aurora Catholic, it seemed like the Bulldogs were going to be on their heels. Instead, they regrouped and devised a new game plan. “You have to hand it to Coach [Bill] Duffy for the defensive adjustments we made at halftime,” said Curtin of the RBHS’ assistant coach. “They have a balanced attack and like to spread it around but we started pressuring them to throw the ball and it made all the difference in the second half.” While the defense came up big in the second half for RBHS, the Eagles beat themselves on multiple plays in the third quarter. Aurora Christian receivers dropped three passes that would have gone for 20-yard gains (one of them being a potential 35-yard touchdown that was bobbled in the end zone at the 6:20 mark). The Eagles also had a costly delay of game penalty midway through the third quarter that forced them to punt instead of attempting a 35-yard field goal. Riverside-Brookfield kept bringing the heat as Rahim Kouferidji and the Bulldogs’ defensive unit forced Hampton outside of the pocket throughout the second half. “Before the game, my coach told me I was going to get less offensive snaps because he wanted me to be fresh on defense and to go out and have a career day,” said Kouferidji, who had two sacks on back-toback plays in the third quarter. “I think I got that tonight.” After a scoreless 11:30 minutes of football, Matthew Torres scrambled for a 3-yard touchdown after the Bulldogs converted a fourth and 15 wildcat play through wide receiver Nic Novak. Torres came up grimacing on the play, but fought through the injury the rest of the way. RBHS missed the point after with the score remaining 23-19. The Eagles tried draining the clock with a 6:30 minute drive, but RB was able to stop Aurora Christian on fourth and one on the Bulldogs’ 32-yard line

with just over two minutes to go. Torres worked his magic out of a four-receiver set in shotgun to drive the ball all the way to the 36-yard line. On fourth and 15, running back Luke Gentile drew a pass interference call to keep the game alive. He would then catch a 21-yard touchdown in the middle of Aurora Christian’s zone to give the Bulldogs a 25-23 lead. They eventually missed their 2-point conversion try from 30 yards out after delay of game and holding penalties drove them backwards. With 45 seconds left, the Eagles had one last shot to save their undefeated record. Starting on his team’s 33-yard line, Hampton connected with JP Jira in the middle of the field for a gain of 50 and had the Bulldogs reeling on their own 19-yard line. It looked like Hampton was going to rescue Eagles from their second-half collapse. “At the end there, I think we got tired and undisciplined and couldn’t make plays when we needed to,” said Eagles’ special teams coordinator Dean Griffing. “It really does come down to if you can’t make plays at the end, you won’t win.” In the last three plays of the game, Hampton and the Eagles’ offense couldn’t move the ball past the 19-yard line. A high snap sent the ball rolling to midfield, and Hampton barely got the ball and threw it away before the RB defense could get to him. On fourth and 10, Hampton had one last chance to kick the game into an Aurora victory. Right before the snap, the Eagles were called for a false start that pushed them back to the 26 yard-line. The game ended with Hampton not getting enough power under the kick, and it fluttered short of the goalpost. “I think this win says a lot about our team and where we can go from here,” said Torres. “The defense showed up, and we really trust this offense. This was a big win.” Riverside-Brookfield will try to build off its momentum against Ridgewood at home on Oct. 4.

The successful bidder shall be required to provide a Performance Bond and a Material and Labor Payment Bond in the amount of 100% of the Contract Amount, as well as liability and property insurance as required by the Bidding Require-

ments before commencing work. The successful bidder shall enter into a formal contract based on the conditions and requirements in the Bidding Requirements and the Bidding Requirements will be incorporated into the Contract. Not less than the prevailing wage shall be paid for labor on the work to be done as required by law.
