Brookfield Kiwanis donating $75K to start police K-9 New officer-dog team could be on the streets in November By BOB UPHUES Editor

Brookfield could have its first-ever police K-9 unit on the streets by mid-November after the village board signaled support on Aug. 27 for accepting a gift of about $75,000 from the Brookfield Kiwanis Club to start the initiative. Joy Klang, the president of the Kiwanis Club, approached police about possibly donating the money for a K-9 unit after club officials had decided to dissolve the almost century-old club due to dwindling and aging membership. Riverside foundation gets back to its healthcare roots Change comes after board resigns on heels of 2016 legal settlement

By BOB SKOLNIK Contributing Reporter

A well-endowed but previously under-theradar foundation based in Riverside has a new

name, new leadership and a new focus. The Healthy Communities Foundation, formerly the Arthur Foundation, is planning to give out about $6 million in grants next year to promote health equity and combat disparate

health outcomes in an area within a five-mile radius of MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn. “We aim to address the conditions that influence health and access to care so that all the residents of our region enjoy their full po-

tential for good health,” said Maria Pesqueira, who was hired as the new president of the newly christened Healthy Communities See FOUNDATION on page 7
