Bulldogs look to rebound after rough campaign More experience should help boost RBHS in 2019 By MARTY FARMER

ince joining the Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division in 2016, the Riverside-Brookfield High School football team has been fairly successful. The Bulldogs’ first two seasons in the Blue Division included a 15-5 overall record and pair of postseason appearances. Last year was more problematic as RBHS struggled to a 2-7 record. The dip in production, however, was largely attributable to an extremely inexperienced starting lineup. After enduring last year’s growing pains,

the Bulldogs are hopeful a return to their winning ways, or at the very least, signs of improvement are on the way. “I’d like to think the experience we gained last year will help us,” coach Brendan Curtin said. “The thing about experience though is the lesson is learned after the test. At the end of the day, it’s really about how well we can execute what we’re trying to do that will matter the most this season.” RBHS will lean on senior leaders Luke Gentile, Chris Doherty, Eddie Pena and Brandon Aguilar. Curtin describes Gentile as the Bulldogs’ “Swiss army knife,” due to his versatility as an impact running back, wide receiver, defensive back and special teams player. Doherty (RB/DB) and Pena (RB/LB) will also see action on both sides of the ball as will the 6-foot-1, 220-pound Aguilar as a two-way lineman.

Sophomore Owen Murphy and senior Matthew Torres are competing for the starting quarterback position. “Both guys saw playing time at quarterback last season,” Curtin said. “It’s kind of neck and neck at quarterback; they are still battling it out. I also feel like we have a strong group of skill players to help our quarterbacks.” In addition to Gentile, Doherty and Pena running the ball, brothers Matt and Nic Novak, Josh Warren, Brady Vaia and Jordan Medrano are all viable options in the passing game. RBHS at a glance

Looking at the conference race, state powerhouses Immaculate Conception and Bishop McNamara lead the way. Last year, IC defeated Bishop Mac 31-21 in the championship game of the Class 4A state playoffs. Collectively, the Knights and Fightin’ Irish finished 26-2 last season. St. Francis and Aurora Christian typically field very solid teams. “We’re the only public school [in the Blue Division] in a predominantly private school conference,” Curtin said. “When you look at the rosters [of RBHS division opponents] you might not see a lot of numbers, but those rosters are compiled with guys that were pursued to play football. It’s going to be a battle every week, especially with two returning state championship qualifiers.” The Bulldogs also hit the road for essentially the first half of the season, with away games in four of their first five contests. Regardless of venue, RBHS has a plan for the season. “Our goal is to go 1-0 each week,” Curtin said. “It’s a unique situation situation going on the road so often early, and then hosting the Big 3 [IC, Bishop Mac, St. Francis]. It certainly will be interesting, but all we can do is take it one game at a time.” Fresh off a productive offseason, Curtin likes what he sees in terms of the Bulldogs’ intangibles. “I think we have a level of good leadership throughout the program,” Curtin said. “We have guys that enjoy competition and they are good teammates. Our players firmly believe in trust, commitment and unity so those things should certainly contribute to our level of play on the field.”

Nazareth ready for all comers 7A state champs have the players, passion for repeat By Marty Farmer

y winning three state titles plus a runnerup finish since 2014, the Nazareth Academy football team has already secured the sweetest one-word description in sports: dynasty. Fresh off a 31-10 win against St. Charles North in the Class 7A state final last year, Nazareth appears primed for another run at state. The expectations are realistic based on the team’s roster and proven track record. The considerable optimism regarding Nazareth starts with quarterback J.J. McCarthy. Last year, the 6-foot-2, 180-pound junior passed for 3,289 yards, 36 touchdowns and just four interceptions while completing 72 percent of his passes. McCarthy, a Michigan commit, is ranked the No. 2 pro-style quarterback nationally and the top Illinois recruit in in the Class of 2021. The rest of the offense is loaded with playmakers, including running backs Alex Carrillo (386 yards rushing in 2018) and Derrick Strongs (429 yards, 7 TD) and wide receivers Tyler Morris (22 catches) and Breven Reifsteck (25 catches). Nazareth bolstered its wide receiving corps even

more with transfers 6-6 Landon Morris, 6-5 Tanner Koziol and Billy O’Malley. “It’s really just a big family environment,” McCarthy said. “We all hang out together so it’s easier when you have transfer guys like we do.” Left tackle Ryan Keeler (6-5, 250) headlines a solid offensive line, along with Domenic Virelli and Jonathon Sarich. Defensively, linebacker Marcus Griffin (49 tackles, including 4 sacks) leads an athletic group. “Marcus is such a great competitor,” coach Tim Racki said. “He’s like a high school version of [former Baltimore Ravens linebacker] Ray Lewis.” Nose tackle CJ West (32 tackles, 2 sacks) plus cornerbacks Jailon Welch and Morris are other standouts. Nazareth will compete in the newly formed Chicago Catholic League/East Suburban Catholic Conference, a super conference with six divisions. The Roadrunners landed in the CCL/ESCC Orange Division with Benet Academy, De La Salle and St. Laurence. “I’m really excited about the new conference. I think the merger is great,” said Racki, who recently attended a conference meeting at St. Patrick. “Both leagues have so many excellent programs with the same type of values.”

Hartman takes over LTHS football New head coach is a proven winner who’s excited about Lions’ potential By MARTY FARMER Sports Editor

The Lyons Township High School football team lost a good head coach in Kurt Weinberg when he resigned after last season. Weinberg guided the Lions to nine playoff appearances in 10 years, highlighted by Class 8A quarterfinal berths in the 2010, 2011 and 2012 state playoffs. Last season, LTHS had an uncharacteristically subpar season with a 1-8 record, and this year Dan Hartman takes over the program with a proven track record of success as well. He coached Hinsdale Central to a 40-13 record and five postseason berths over the past five years. His overall record as a head coach is 67-22 with three conference titles and eight trips to the playoffs, including quarterfinal and semifinal appearances during his stint at Evergreen Park. “I’m confident Coach Hartman is a great fit for our Lions football program,” said LTHS Athletic Director John Grundke in a press release. “He brings a wealth of experience and leadership. His dedication to players on and off the field will only add to the LT program.” So far, the Lions’ new coach likes what he sees. “I am very excited about our team,” Hartman said. “The players have been working hard this offseason. I have been

most impressed with their hunger to do anything it takes to win.” On offense, wide receivers Chris Clarke and Sam Rodriguez will be primary targets of promising quarterback Blaise Reichert. Sophomore Joey Antonietti is a capable backup for Reichert. Theo Gazis (6-2, 260), Aidan Kelly (6-2, 245) and Cameron Trimborn (6-1, 245) anchor the offensive line. “We expect big things out of Chris and Sam as they gained a lot of experience last year,” Hartman said. “Blaise takes over at quarterback and just keeps getting better and better every day.” Defensively, lineman Anthony Georgelos and linebackers Sam Heyer and Jimmy Pouba are leaders. Zach Janicki and Arthur Chatt are top contributors in the secondary, while junior defensive backs Ray Kloes and Michael Newson are newcomers to watch. “Our team is very fast and athletic,” Hartman said. “They key for us will be our ability to consistently do the little things necessary to win. If we can do the little things every day, we will get better each day and have a successful season.” Glenbard West, Hinsdale Central and Oak Park and River Forest notched a three-way tie as West Suburban Conference Silver Division champions last season. Those three teams should contend again for the title, with LTHS, Downers Grove North, York and Proviso West looking to get in the mix. “The West Suburban Silver is one of the best conferences in the state,” Hartman said. “I think everyone is chasing Glenbard West.” LTHS opens the season at New Trier on Friday, Aug. 30. The Fenwick High School football team finished 3-6 last season. Is a bounce-back season in store this fall? Head coach Gene Nudo is optimistic about a return to the postseason. “I’m pleased with the development of our team,” he said. “We’re young and inexperienced in a lot of spots, but our enthusiasm has overcome our youth. We’ve got great senior leadership on this team. It’s nice to have guys that want to be out there; our guys love playing football for Fenwick and we’re excited about the team we’re going to put on the field.” Senior Sean Carpenter is among the Friars’ top returning players. An all-Catholic League selection last fall, the 6-foot-5, 275-pound offensive tackle has embraced an increased leadership role. “Sean has emerged into a position of leadership,” Nudo said. “The older guys [like Sean] are teaching the ropes of how Fenwick kids are supposed to act.” The Friars return two other players who made all-Catholic League in 2018 – senior kicker/punter Bryan Dowd and senior strong safety/linebacker Tom Dvorak (46 tackles, 4 sacks in 2018). “The other day in practice, Bryan hit a 35yard field goal with his left foot. He’s rightfooted,” Nudo said. “His leg has gotten stronger and he’s going to be a weapon for us. He’ll be able to flip the field.”

Seniors Solomon Singleton (18 tackles, 3 pass breakups, 1 interception) and Marc Thomas (18 tackles, 2 interceptions, 1 fumble recovery) are speedy playmakers at cornerback. Nudo feels senior free safety Greyson Cone is in store for a big year. Linebackers Danny Farnan (53 tackles, 4 tackles for loss) and Bryce Legan (46 tackles, 4 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks) provide a very physical presence in the middle. The defensive line will feature senior William O’Brien and sophomore Quin Wieties at ends, and Emmett Bonaccorsi at tackle. Offensively, sophomore quarterback Kaden Cobb (6-3, 180) had a good offseason as he takes over as the starter this season. The left-handed Cobb, who was a starter on the basketball team last winter, has unlimited potential and a chance to develop into an elite leader. “Kaden’s done a good job. He’s quick to the hole and elusive. “Isaac had a great offseason,” Nudo said. “I’m pleased with the physicalness.” Sophomores Danny Kent and Jacque Walls will get carries as well. At 5-11, 238 pounds, fullback Kevin Frazier will be a solid lead blocker and occasional runner in the ground game. Although lacking experience, the wide receiving corps will have plenty of length and depth. Senior Brian Moore grabbed nine receptions for 103 yards last season. Junior Jonas Capek saw varsity time as well. Top newcomers include sophomores Bryan Hunt and Eian Pugh (6-3, 170) and junior Nick Polston, who is also the reserve quarterback. The skill positions will work behind a developing offensive line. Center Jimmy Liston started last year on the varsity as a freshman, while junior Jamie Moran was also pressed into service. The experience of Liston and Moran along with Carpenter

should foster development of the entire unit, which will have two sophomores starting in 6-3, 330-pound guard Rasheed Anderson and Liston. The Friars hope to get off to a fast start. After opening at home against Curie and Dunbar, Fenwick will encounter an extremely difficult three-game stretch – at defending Class 7A champion Nazareth Academy, at defending 5A champion Joliet Catholic and home against 8A semifinalist Marist.The football-only merger between the Chicago Catholic League and the East Suburban Catholic Conference has created six divisions. Fenwick is in the CCL/ESCC White Division, along with defending Class 5A state champion Joliet Catholic, Marmion Academy and St. Ignatius. “We’ve got our challenge,” Nudo said. “Everyone’s talking about the meat grinder in the middle, but our focus right now is on Curie. We can’t wait to take the field [August 30] and show what we’ve got.”

PUBLIC NOTICE OF INTENT REQUEST FOR THE RELEASE OF FUNDS On September 5, 2019 the Village of Oak Park (Village) will request the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to release federal funds under Title I of the Housing and Community Development Act of 1974 (PL 93383), as amended, for various activities pursuant to the Program Year (PY) 2019 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, including: public services, public facilities and improvements, housing rehabilitation, code enforcement, ADA sidewalk/curb ramp reconstruction, and water main & alley improvements. These activities will take place within the Village of Oak Park, Illinois at a total cost of $1,837,203. PY 2019 activities undertaken by the Emergency Solutions Grant Program will total $143,061 to assist persons experiencing homelessness or at risk. An Environmental Review Record covering these programs has been made by the Village, which documents the environmental review of the activities. The legal effect of the certification is that upon its approval, the Village may use the grant funds, and HUD will have satisfied its responsibilities under the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969. HUD will accept an objection of its approval of the release of funds and acceptance of the certification only if it is on one of the following bases: (a) that the certification was not in

fact executed by one or both of the responsible entity’s Certifying Officers; (b) that the responsible entity has failed to make one of the two findings pursuant to Sec. 58.40 or to make the written determination required by Secs. 58.35, 58.47 or 58.53 for the grant activity, as applicable; or (c) that the recipient or other participants in the development process have committed funds, incurred costs or undertaken activities not authorized by Sec. 58.75 before release of funds and approval of the environmental certification by HUD. Objections must be prepared and submitted in accordance with the required procedure (24 CFR Part 58) and may be addressed to HUD at 77 West Jackson Blvd., Chicago, Illinois 60604. Section 5: If no petition is filed with the corporate authorities of the Village of Brookfield within thirty (30) days after publication of this resolution, requesting that the question of the adoption of this resolution be submitted to the electors of the Village of Brookfield, or if all petitions so filed are determined to be invalid and insufficient, the Village shall then be authorized to levy the tax.
