WSSRA Derby Day

West Suburban Special Recreation Association invites the community to its Annual Kentucky Derby Gala on Saturday, Sept. 5 at 5 p.m.

This year the gala, presented by the WSSRA Foundation, is virtual and will include a silent auction, ra“e and paddle raise. The online auction opens at 5 p.m. on Sept. 2.

Animal Care League

Trivia Night

Help raise money for pets in need at the Animal Care League’s Virtual Trivia Night on Thursday, Aug. 27 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Grab a drink, your pet and a computer and compete for the trivia grand prize of a new Nintendo Switch Lite. Not a trivia whiz? No problem. The Animal Care League will also be doing several drawings for a $100 Amazon gift card and more.

Minimum donation to participate is $20 and gets you two ra“e tickets. For each additional $10, you get another entry into the ra“e.

Riverside Reads returns

The Riverside Public Library, 1 Burling Road, will resume its inperson Riverside Reads book club on Tuesday, Sept. 5 at 2 p.m. for a safe, socially distanced discussion of“The Overstory” by Richard Powers.

The club will meet outside in front of the library. Bring a chair or blanket and dress for the weather. The rain location will be the auditorium of the Riverside Township Hall next door.

Farmers markets continue

It’s high summer, which means tomatoes, sweet corn, peaches and much more at local farmers markets, which are adhering to COVID-19 protocols and require all visitors to wear face coverings and follow special rules in place this year.

The Riverside Farmers Market is open for business every Wednesday from 2:30 to 7 p.m. in Centennial Park – in the shadow of the village’s downtown water tower at 10 Pine Ave. – through Oct. 7.

Riverside Arts Center is o—ering Boredom Buster Boxes and Virtual Party Boxes to give the kids some hands-on fun. Each box all the materials needed to complete an art project and instruction sheets. You can also enjoy the annual Members’ and Kids’ Exhibition virtually.
