Riverside’s parks and recreation department wants to show you just how many kinds of wildlife move through the area with an upcoming program dedicated to an underrated member of the animal kingdom.

A guided bat tour for all ages will take place near the Scout Cabin after dark later this month, Recreation Supervisor Alyssa Szymanski told the Landmark.

“The whole point of the bat hike is to give people a better understanding of these animals and how incredibly important they are to our ecosystem. With a lot of animals that aren’t cute, fluffy, more appealing visually, there’s a lot of incorrect information about animals out there,” she said. “[Bats are] out all the time, and See BAT TOUR on page 7

Bookstore brings curated reads, community events to ‘Bookfield’ New Book Joy events in full swing after May opening.

If have trouble deciding on a book to read, “matchmaker” Mandy Genge can probably help. Through New Book Joy, a “booktique” on Prairie Avenue in Brookfield, Genge connects readers from all over the area with their next read.

“I call it ‘book matchmaking,’” Genge said, describing how she recommends books to customers. After asking them about their taste in reads, she pulls out a selection of books, allowing customers to read through them in-store to see “if anything grabs them.”

New Book Joy’s Brookfield location officially moved to its brick-and-mortar storefront in May, after starting as part of the Brookfield Shops’ first retail incubation cohort. Genge is the sole operator of the Brookfield location, while co-owners Connie Obrochta and Therese Tanski run the

Edgebrook location on the Northwest Side.

Genge, who has taught English at Morton East for two decades, said she uses her background in education to encourage “empowerment through books and conversations through books.”

In addition to books in all sorts of genres, Genge stocks plenty of children’s books.

She said she is “really intentional” about stocking books for all sorts of developmental periods and potential topics.

The shop’s collection is extensively curated; Genge said she has read around 80% of the books she stocks, which makes the matchmaking process so specific. Shop employee Kat Hennington, who started working at New Book Joy in August, described it as one of Genge’s “absolute favorite things to do.”

Hennington described when she came into the store around Christmastime, to get a gift for a Secret Santa who was interested in business and historical fiction. Genge’s

recommendation, Everything is Tuberculosis by John Green, was “right on point,” Hennington said.

Karen Judge, a teacher at Morton West, often stops by the shop while walking her dog. Last Wednesday, she dropped by for the bookstore’s “Back to School” event, where community members could browse the selection, chat, and enjoy drinks.

“There’s so much fun stuff here,” Judge said, joking the store is “more dangerous now, because they just got a liquor license and they’re doing a happy hour sit and read.”

Genge hosts such events regularly, including book clubs, book swaps, and book slams, where people recommend books to one another. Genge says she hope to attract readers of all ages and backgrounds through her events.

“I met people through them who are now my friends,” Judge said. “So read a book, come on in”

Hauser class of 2006 hosts 20-year reunion The middle school class came together on Aug. 1, some for the first time in 2 decades

About 25 members of Hauser Junior High School’s class of 2006 came together on Saturday, Aug. 1, for a 20-year middle school reunion.

The event was masterminded by Tom Doherty, who said the idea had been bouncing around his brain for a few years before it “crystallized” one night at a bar with friends.

“I’m still very close with a lot of those people, and whenever I see random people from that era, I can’t stop laughing. It dawned on me: This would be a silly, fun thing to consider, but to be honest, I really had no idea how people would react,” he said. “I was quite surprised at not only how interested people were but how excited they were about the idea. It was like we were all on the same wavelength in a way.”

Doherty said he quickly put together a small group to act as a planning committee, consisting of former classmates Audrey

Hursh, Stephanie Sauer, Connor Halline and Caley Fox Shannon.

“They were pretty much immediately in,” Doherty said. “It mostly played out over group texts and Google documents, but over the course of about six months, we basically put this all together piece by piece.”

“We took on a ‘If we build it, they will come’ mentality. We were like, ‘If only we come, we’ll have fun, so, hopefully, some other people will come,” Shannon told the Landmark.

Doherty said much of the work boiled down to trying to find as many former middle school classmates as humanly possible.

“We had 158 people in our class, and we literally busted our yearbooks and were going name by name, being like, ‘What’s this person up to? Where do they live? Do we have their contact information?’ That ended up being a lot harder than I thought.

I assumed we would be able to find everyone online,” he said.

Tom Doherty, whose idea sparked the reunion, and his former English teacher David Mason stand together for a picture. reunion solidified, even through the night before the event, when he invited classmate Yetta Sejdiu by leaving a voicemail at the beauty salon she owns in the city.

“We basically cold pitched her to come to this party, and within an hour, we found her on Instagram. She responded and was like, ‘Oh my God, your employees forwarded your voicemail!’” he said. “We were so excited. Like, I can’t believe that worked.”

Different members of the planning committee took on different tasks, Shannon said. She made the music playlist while Doherty put together a series of Hauser trivia slides. The group also made Hauser bingo cards, asking attendees to find a former classmate who, for example, was in their same homeroom or didn’t go on to attend Riverside Brookfield High School as a way to break the ice between people who might not have interacted in two decades.

On the day, a good time was had by all, Doherty said, especially when he brought out the celebrity guest: David Mason, who many of the attendees had as an English teacher during their time at Hauser. Mason still teaches at Hauser and runs its theater program like he did back in the day, Doherty said.

“I called him personally out of nowhere one day, and he picked up the phone, and he was overjoyed that I called. It was crazy,” Doherty said. “Originally, it was going to be like, ‘Hey, can you film a quick video for us to say hello to people?’ but he was so ex-

cited about it that he was like, ‘Is it alright if I come?’ and I was like, ‘Hell yeah, it’s alright if you come! That would be amazing!’”

Doherty said there were “a lot of surreal moments” shared between the attendees.

Shannon agreed, saying it was fun to reminisce about old times and gain new perspectives on them.

“I had a conversation with two different people who, we were articulating that we didn’t think we were cool or that people liked us, and the other person was like, ‘No, you were great,’” she said. “It’s a time in your life that has a lot of insecurity, maybe, and you’re very worried about thinking you’re cool or a loser or whatever, and it was fun to be like, ‘I didn’t think you were a loser!’”

She said the focus of the event allowed the group, who have all grown up in the 20 years since middle school, to “be kids for the day again together.”

Doherty said he was grateful to everyone who attended and especially the planning committee.

“It really warmed my heart and was lovely. I think, also, to be corny, it just goes to show that Riverside is a really special place,” Shannon said. “It’s such a privilege, of course, to have grown up in Riverside, gone to Hauser and been in such a tightknit community. We don’t live in Riverside anymore, most of us, so it’s not every day we get to feel that feeling again.”

What’s up with Snails to Tails Pet Center?

The pet store on Grand Boulevard appears dilapidated inside

If you’re walking along Grand Boulevard in Brookfield’s downtown, it’s easy to glance over Snails to Tails Pet Center. The pet store at 3644 ½ Grand Blvd. is rarely open to the public, according to nearby workers and village officials alike.

While the appearance would suggest the dilapidated store is abandoned, it officially remains open. According to Google, Snails to Tails is open Friday through Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and closed on Thursday. Live fish could be seen swimming in tanks through the dust-streaked windows on Friday, Aug. 7.

Libby Popovic, Brookfield’s community development director, said the pet center remains open officially, though with a number of code compliance and property maintenance issues. She said its business license is actively being reviewed by the village, and ongoing issues could result in the license being revoked or allowed to lapse without renewal.

“With the two inspectors that we have, they’ve been out there quite a few times [in the last two years] because there’s been some citations for both code compliance and for property maintenance,” Popovic told the Landmark. “We’ve been in touch with the business owner on his business license and also regarding some of the compliance issues, and we’ve been in touch with the property owner.”

Popovic said the village had received a complaint from the public about the store appearing to be vacant.

“It doesn’t seem to be open any time that any of us staff have seen it,” she said. “We did look into whether it was a vacant property with the new vacant property registration that’s required.

The business owner did come into adjudication to indicate that the property was

not vacant, and that was rather recent.”

The Landmark could not contact the business owner, who, according to business cards visible through the store’s windows, is Ray Kobelt. The phone number on two signs visible from out front was disconnected when Landmark reporters called, and the phone number on Kobelt’s card was not available.

According to the property records search through the Cook County Assessor’s Office, the store is owned by Renzy Realty Inc. That business is located at 3742 Grand Blvd., though its offices were closed on Aug. 7 and appeared as vacant as the pet store, if less dilapidated.

Patrick Georgeson, an area resident and longtime customer, said he used to frequent Snails to Tails and had known Kobelt directly, having bought a turtle from him about 20 years ago. He said he believed the store to have been open to the public at some point between 2020 and 2023, but D, an employee at Daisy’s who wished not to share his full name, said he’d never seen it open in the five years the ice cream shop has been in business next door.

Georgeson, who had left a note on the store’s front door asking Kobelt to call him, said he had seen the lights on inside some of the lizard tanks in the store as recently as Wednesday, Aug. 5.

Georgeson said kids used to be known to frequent the shop after school, which he said Kobelt told him annoyed him.

He said Kobelt had told him that larger chain pet stores like Petco had come to him to source fish during the COVID-19 lockdowns in 2020 when they could not find them elsewhere, suggesting he may have taken up that business and let Snails to Tails fall to the wayside.

In the meantime, Popovic said village staff had received both formal and informal complaints over the years from village residents about the continued presence of live animals within the business.

She said village inspectors had only been able to enter the shop at preapproved times.

“If for some reason you find it open, let me know,” she said. “It’s never been open for any of the staff.”

Szymanski said she had run similar programs before when she worked for the Forest Preserve District of Will County.

The guided tour will feature Amy Godbey, a naturalist with a focus on studying and educating about bats.

“She is like the head volunteer for our bat programs at Will County Forest Preserves. She is also very heavily involved in citizen scientist work with bat monitoring at places like the Lincoln Park Zoo,” Szymanski said. “She is definitely a number one bat advocate, and she’s amazing.”

The guided tour had originally been scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 8, but it had to be rescheduled due to a death in Godbey’s family, Szymanski said. The new date is still in the works.

Szymanski said Godbey will bring her “bat backpack” that can pick up on the high-frequency sounds bats emit in order to navigate by echolocation, in which they bounce sound waves off their environment to detect items in space. The backpack can discern what kind of bat emitted the sound and pull up a photo of another member of the species, Szymanski said.

“The human ear cannot hear it. It’s too high of a frequency, but on the iPad, you can play it back and see the soundwaves,” she said.

Szymanski said the goal of the program

is to educate the public about bats and give people a newfound appreciation for them.

“Usually, we get asked within the first five minutes all of the bat myths that [people] have heard and debunk those myths,” she said. “Our bats are dying, unfortunately. White nose syndrome, if it’s something you have ever heard of, is a fungus that goes onto their nose and makes them have a white nose, and it gets into their respiratory system, and they die.”

Szymanski said entire colonies of bats can be wiped out by white nose syndrome, which is a net loss for the ecosystem. She said bats play important roles as pollinators for some plants while their excrement can be used as fertilizer for plants.

“They also help eat and control some of those nasty bugs that we don’t want, those mosquito populations and some moth populations, even though moths are important as well,” she said. “Bats in other places, different species eat fruits. They’re eating those fruits, they’re eating those seeds, and they’re helping pollinate and disperse seeds. They’re a very important species to the Illinois ecosystem, and the whole intention is to share how great these guys are.”

She also encouraged Riverside residents to attend and enjoy the experience of navigating at night without lighting.

“I encourage everybody I meet, even if you’re walking around the streets of Riverside … to try it out. It is a very unique experience, especially doing it for the first time. Your eyesight does adjust,” she said.

“It almost gives you that real feeling of, I’m like an owl or a bat or these creatures who are out and awake and thriving at night, hunting and communicating with each other and other species.”

Drunk driver caught sleeping in driver’s seat Brookfield police on July 30 arrested a 39-year-old Brookfield man for driving drunk.

Around 3 a.m., an officer saw a parked car on the 8800 block of Burlington Avenue with the driver’s door open. The officer stopped and made contact with the sleeping driver, who they woke up due to parking on the block being illegal from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. The man asked the officer to close the door, but the officer asked for his driver’s license. The man informed the officer that his license was in the backseat before grabbing a bag from the center console.

The man showed the officer a glass bottle with a pink liquid inside before failing to follow the officer’s instruction to provide his driver’s license. The man grabbed a bag from the backseat and tried to hand the officer two cell phones before the man, after multiple requests, allowed the officer to go through his bag. The officer ran the man’s Florida driver’s license, which came back clear and valid.

During this interaction, the officer noticed a bottle of Grey Goose vodka on the man’s passenger seat, which the man said belonged to a friend he had just dropped off at the train station. At the man’s behest, the officer smelled the glass bottle with the pink substance, which police said did not smell of alcohol, as well as a silver thermos, which did smell of alcohol. The man started to walk away from the scene before the officer placed him under arrest, at which point the man became combative and did not comply with the officer’s orders.

While the officer transported the man to the police station, the man made racist remarks and other negative comments to the officers. After a 20-minute observation period, the man declined to take a chemical breath test and said he was having trouble breathing.

Firefighter paramedics transported the man to LaGrange Memorial Hospital and, after he was medically cleared, police set a Sept. 8 court date for the charge of driving under the influence and released the man.

Expired license plates Brookfield police ticketed an 18-year-old Chicago woman on July 31.

Around 12:21 a.m., an officer was on patrol on the 4100 block of Eberly Avenue running license plates when they observed a red car with suspended plates due to a lack of mandatory insurance.

The officer activated their squad car’s emergency lights and pulled the car over. The officer made contact with the driver, requesting backup from a Spanish-speaking officer due to a language barrier. Once a second officer arrived, police informed the woman of the reason for the traffic stop.

The woman told officers she did not have insurance on the vehicle or a driver’s license.

The officers told her that they would ticket her and her vehicle would be towed. Police issued citations to the woman for driving without a valid license, for driving a motor vehicle with suspended plates and for driving a motor vehicle without insurance.

Police had the car towed and set a Sept. 8 court date for the woman.

Going more than twice the speed limit Brookfield police ticketed a 40-year-old Chicago man on July 31 for speeding.

Around 3:23 p.m., an officer was on patrol on the 8800 block of 31st Street when they observed a white car heading west at a speed of 64 mph in the posted 30-mph zone. The officer followed the car and activated their squad car’s emergency lights to conduct a traffic stop near the intersection with Prairie Avenue.

The officer made contact with the driver and explained the reason for the stop. The man provided the officer with a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance on the vehicle.

The officer said he would be issuing one citation to the man for speeding between 26 and 34 mph over the speed limit.

The officer set an Aug. 25 court date in Maywood and released the man from the scene without further incident.

These items were obtained from the Brookfield Police Department reports dated July 27 to Aug. 2; they represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Anyone named in these reports has only been charged with a crime and cases have not yet been adjudicated.

We report the race of a suspect only when a serious crime has been committed, the suspect is still at large and police have provided us with a detailed physical description of the suspect as they seek the public’s help in making an arrest.

D96 tentative FY27 budget shows $786K surplus Board also transfers $3.4M from education fund to capital projects

The Riverside School District 96’s tentative fiscal year 2027 budget features a $786,623 surplus, with education lineitem revenues outpacing expenditures by $904,920, according to projections from director of finance and operations Steve Wilder at the Aug. 5 board of education meeting.

Additionally, the board unanimously approved transferring $3,411,953 from the education fund to the capital project fund to settle payment for projects completed this summer, including the new Blythe Park Elementary School playground, and tuck pointing and installation of new windows and a new boiler at Hauser Junior High School.

“I think it makes a lot of sense,” Wilder said Monday of the funds transfer. “The district decided to use those funds to pay

for those projects, which means taxpayers don’t have to pay for that.”

Wilder added that the district had a 48% fund balance at the end of fiscal year 2026, which also contributed to payment for those projects.

The tentative budget presentation Aug. 5 allows for it to be put on display for more than 30 days ahead of the Sept. 16 board meeting where voting will likely occur, Wilder said. Final approval must take place by the end of September.

Other budget highlights included $143,755 in working cash funds, which would cover unforeseen expenses. Wilder said he doesn’t anticipate expenditures coming out of that fund in fiscal year 2027.

The operations and maintenance line item showed a deficit of $28,290, though that number is a conservative approach.

“I did my best to project out revenue and operations and maintenance where we might have unforeseen expenses,” he said.

Wilder also said he budgeted for a 3% increase in staff salaries and wages for fiscal year 2027. Other notable expenditures include purchase of a district van ($30,000), replacement of an oven at Hauser ($35,000) and planned tech replacements totaling $200,000, including 60 iPads for kindergarten, 600 Chromebooks for third and six grades, and 50 MacBooks for staff.

“This is more curiosity, but why specifically third and sixth (grades) for Chromebooks?” said board secretary Stephanie Gunn, who chaired the meeting for board president Wesley Muirheid, who wasn’t present. “Are (we) staggering then another year doing other grades?”

The reason for that is the replacement cycle, said district director of technology Molly Marquardt.

Also notable is the ongoing development of a five-year facility plan, from fiscal years 2027-31, which will project costs for larger facility work that will need to be completed during that time period.

Wilder said he will work with DLA Architects to identify what projects the district needs to plan and collaborate with director of facilities and maintenance Zach Pros to plot out those projects so they align with budget.

Blythe Park playground project delayed: Wilder noted that permitting issues early on for the new Blythe Park playground will result in the space officially opening shortly after school begins Aug. 27.

He said that the orange plastic fencing currently surrounding the space will be replaced with a chain-link fence to keep students out and increase safety.

The design from DLA Architects, approved by the board of education last October and by the village of Riverside the subsequent month with alterations, is being executed by Shorewood-based D&J Landscaping. The design expands the previous park’s footprint and will accommodate up to 135 children ages 2-5 and 5-12.

“While it’s not on time, it’s still on budget, so we’re glad to see that,” Wilder said.

YouTube will be out of the picture on district-provided devices for Riverside School District 96 students this school year.

It’s part of technology changes for the K-8 district outlined by director of technology Molly Marquardt at the Aug. 5 board of education meeting.

YouTube access will be blocked on devices inside and outside of school, Marquardt told the board. If a resource is needed in the classroom, a teacher will need to show it on their own device to the class.

“It’s something a lot of school districts are having discussions about or have in place,” Marquardt said Monday. “There are different types of YouTube access. There are some school districts that don’t let it happen at all. Everybody does it a little differently.”

Karla Altmayer is a District 96 parent and co-organizer of Riverside for Balanced Learning, which is a coalition of parents created in response to concerns about the use of personal devices in the classroom.

She thinks it’s a good move.

“We’re glad the district is taking this step,” Altmayer said. “The banning of YouTube is a step that’s long overdue.”

Stephanie Shaw, another parent, spoke at the Aug. 5 board meeting on behalf of Riverside for Balanced Learning.

‘What concerns many families is that while student technology use has expanded dramatically over the past decade, there has been seemingly little district-wide evaluation of whether current practices are achieving the educational outcomes we want for our children,” Shaw said.

Marquardt is in her second year, and emphasized the collaboration fostered between the district, its teachers, staff and administration and groups like Riverside for Balanced Learning that resulted in the upcoming changes. She also told the board that a technology committee comprised of parents and staff members will start this school year.

Another big change: Student devices will “lock” at 10:30 p.m. and “unlock” at 6:30 a.m. the next day. Timing cannot be changed nor can other Wi-Fi networks be accessed.

She added that K-2 students will not be able to take devices home at all this school year district-wide. Grades 3-5 will not be able to take devices home unless students have been given specific teacher direction, such as finishing an assignment not completed in class. Grades 6-8 are allowed to take their devices home.

Though not new, the district also employs Securly Classroom for K-2 students that allows teachers to monitor student iPads throughout the day in real time, with screen monitoring, screen locking and site blocking. Likewise, grades 3-8 teachers have a program called GoGuardian that allows them to monitor student Chromebooks throughout the day in real-time.

It doesn’t stop there. All student devices have Securly filtering software that monitors all web activity, with real-time blocking of websites that should not be accessed.

Securly Home allows parents to see student activities on their district device while at home, with parental controls and locks while on a home network.

Marquardt also told the board a parent webpage is forthcoming, a topic of high interest since she started, which will “increase the transparency between parents and community members in a place that’s easy to get to and get any questions they need to have answered.”

Altmayer said, “the district needs to take into consideration the future of technology, how fast it is moving and the dangers of AI in our children’s development.”

Marquardt said that’s happening.

“I know tech changes rapidly, but something important to the district and the leaders in the district is we’re watching that,” she said. “We’re having the conversations about AI and what it looks like for use and not using and taking those things into consideration. We’re making sure we know when things are happening (to) keep pace with how fast things change.”

Carol Hernandez, 82 LT High School secretary Catherine L. “Carol” Hernandez, 82 of Naperville, formerly of Brookfield, died on Aug. 5, 2026 at Edwards Hospital in Naperville.

Born on June 28, 1944 in Oak Park, she work as a secretary at Lyons Township High School before retiring.

Carol was the daughter of the late Louis Sr. and the late Lucille (nee Martinez) Hernandez; the sister of Marge (late Norbert) Murray, Vicki Suddreth, Bob (Maureen) Hernandez, Art (Jackie) Hernandez, Nancy (Dave) LaFrancis and Debbie (Mike) Matozzi and the late Mary Franson, Louis (late Patricia) Hernandez, Bette Mersereau, Tom (late Myra) Hernandez, Lucille (late Larry) Stewart, John “Hondo” Hernandez, Susan (Dean) Pederson and Frank (Maureen) Hernandez; and the aunt, great-aunt and friend to many.

John Damore, 92 Chicago Bear football player John L. Damore, 92, of Westmont, former longtime resident of Riverside, died on Aug. 4, 2026. Born on Oct. 20, 1933, he was a proud U.S. Marine veteran, and played for the Chicago Bears. Drafted by the NFL in 1955 out of Northwestern University, he played from 1957 to 1959. This past season, he joyfully celebrated being the oldest living Chicago Bear, a milestone that brought him great pride and sparked many fond con-

versations. The former owner of Damore Construction and Damore Builders in Riverside for many years, he loved coaching youth football at St. Mary School in Riverside. He always bragged that he had the greatest family in the world.

John was the husband of Joyce (nee Albert) Damore for 65 years, a partnership marked by devotion, humor and unwavering support. He was the father of Alison (William) Bihun and Lawrence “Larry” Damore; and the grandfather of John Bihun and Ashley Bihun. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Sally (the late John) Jeske, Rose (the late Lewis) Casassa, Rochelle (the late Clifford) Faust, Joanne (the late Ronald Wert and the late Dennis) Malec, and Linda (the late Ross) Patten. He was the uncle and cousin to many, remembered for his kindness, steady presence, and deep affection for his family.

Visitation will be held at the ConboyWestchester Funeral Home, 10501 W. Cermak Road, on Aug. 19, from 3 until 8 p.m.

A chapel service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 20 at the funeral home. Interment will remain private.

Larry Hitzman, 81 Butcher and Civil War history buff Lawrence A. “Larry” Hitzman, 81, of Tinley Park, formerly of Brookfield, died peacefully on July 31, 2026, surrounded by his family. Born on Nov. 4, 1944, he was a proud U.S. Army veteran and dedicated much of his working life to his craft as a butcher, a profession he genuinely enjoyed and took great pride in. Over the years, he became a familiar face to countless customers at County Fair Foods on Western Avenue in Chicago’s Beverly neighborhood before concluding his career at Casey’s Market in Western Springs.

He had a kind heart, a gentle spirit, and a genuine interest in the world around him. An avid reader whose curiosity nev-

er faded, he found great joy in learning throughout his life. He especially loved history, with a particular passion for the Civil War. He also enjoyed gardening and had a deep appreciation for nature.

A devoted Chicago Cubs fan, he and Christine also enjoyed attending performances as season ticket holders to the Southwest Suburban Symphony. During retirement, they spent several happy years living in Branson, Missouri, where Larry embraced the slower pace of life and the natural beauty of the Ozarks before eventually returning to Illinois.

A devoted and active member of St. George Parish in Tinley Park, he found strength, comfort, and purpose in his faith.

He treasured the people in his life. His greatest joy was his family, and he was a steady source of love, wisdom, and encouragement.

Larry was the husband of Christine (née Scalise) Hitzman and the father of Michelle Hitzman. After the heartbreaking loss of his first wife, Patricia A. Hitzman (née Meschi), to leukemia in 1973, he devoted himself to raising Michelle as a single father — a role that became one of his life’s greatest accomplishments.

He was the brother of Mary “Cookie” (the late John) Shuper, the late Frederick (Cynthia) Hitzman, and Thomas (Alice) Hitzman; the uncle to Ryan Hitzman, Paige (Chris Aarvig) Hitzman, John (Rebecca) Shuper, and Tracy (Bruce) Collier.

He will be deeply missed by his faithful dog, Jingles.

Visitation was held on Aug. 10 at Conboy-Westchester Funeral Home. A funeral Mass was celebrated on Aug. 11 at St.

George Church in Tinley Park, followed by entombment at Queen of Heaven Cemetery.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who offered prayers, support, and compassion during Larry’s illness and in the days following his passing.

Wesley Phenegar, 64 Carpenter Wesley Robert Phenegar III, 64 of Brookfield died on Aug. 9, 2026 at MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn. Born on Sept. 10, 1961 in Penascola, Florida, he worked as a Carpenter for a construction company, enjoyed riding his motorcycle, spending time with his wife, fixing things, working on his Jeep and watching his grandchildren grow up.

Wesley was the husband of Susan Hvorcik; the father of Amanda Phenegar, Wes Phenegar, Tim Medina, Melissa Phenegar, Steffani Dahlstrom, Sean Phenegar and Sam Phenegar; grandfather of Taylor and Lukas Dahlstrom, Liam Smith and Weston Phenegar; brother of Melanie Phenegar and Dane Phenegar; and the uncle of Luke and Erin Hodina and Tabetha, Brittany, Dane Jr., Hannah, Lillia and Brogan Phenegar.

Unfinished business fuels RBHS football’s higher goals Bulldogs look to improve on 8-2 finish with UEC East, playoff success

Senior offensive lineman Joaquin Jara and his 2025 Riverside Brookfield High School football teammates were off to an 8-0 start and going after the program’s first undefeated regular season since 2001. Then the Bulldogs lost a wild 45-43 regular-season finale at Glenbard East for the Upstate Eight Conference East Division title on a last-second field goal. Then came the 29-23 home loss to Rolling Meadows in the opening round of the Class 6A playoffs.

“I think at the end of the season we kind of let up because we were undefeated and we were just going to be an undefeated team,” Jara said. “(Glenbard East) was a big loss. That kind of demoralized us. I think that kind of led into the playoffs.”

Especially with 12 returning starters, the Bulldogs have the collective confidence from last season’s 8-2 finish (5-1 in UEC East) but also the resolve to achieve their first conference title since 2009 and secure at least the program’s first playoff victory since 2015.

Senior team captains are third-year starter Andrew Olivares, Nico Caputo, Jara, Anthony Lembcke, Braeden Novak, Bryan Rimpila and Brandon Ruiz. Jara, quarterback Novak, slot receiver/running back Caputo, and inside linebacker Rimpila were among the Bulldogs’ 2025 All-UEC selections.

“We have a chip on our shoulder because we had a good season so we kept lifting, getting everybody going, keeping it going forward,” Rimpila said.

With this year’s earlier schedule and expanded state playoffs, the Bulldogs open Aug. 21 at home against Sandburg, which

was 7-3 last season and lost to Lockport 2114 in the opening round of the 8A playoffs.

“A lot of these guys experienced some success last year, which is great, so they know they’re capable of doing it, but it’s unfinished business,” RBHS coach Sam Styler said. “It’s kind of been our rallying cry. We fell short in the conference championship game and obviously that left a bad taste in our mouths and rolling into that playoff game. It’s just fueled them.”

The 2025 Bulldogs outscored opponents 410-199 with eight games in which they scored at least 31 points under offensive coordinator Brad Wojick.

Novak was impressive in his first varsity season, passing for 1,405 yards (82 for 139) with 19 touchdowns and rushing for 136 yards with one TD. Until late in the season, Novak platooned at quarterback with current senior Giancarlo Garcia, who did not return this season.

“My confidence rose a lot. I did not expect to be that good,” Novak said. “I’m just going to carry that into this year. I have a chip on my shoulder to go win some playoff games.”

The Bulldogs graduated key receivers but they also possess four returning starters on the offensive line – Jara (left tackle), seniors Damian Amparan (left guard) and Felix Sanchez (center) and junior Charlie Jicha (tackle/guard). Mostly out of the backfield, Caputo caught a team-high 25 passes for 315 yards and three TDs and rushed for 159 yards and one TD. He’s healed from a broken hand that hampered his past baseball season. Seniors Will Rio and Tim Jiacomelli Jr. also expect to contribute more.

“We have a lot of speed, physical, downhill football. I think we can be (just as ex-

“I think the success is going to come from the offensive line, honestly. We really did not let up many sacks,” Jara said. “Having those returning starters back, especially knowing the system (helps). We’re going to be a lot more connected up front.”

Defensively, the Bulldogs have returnees Rimpila (31 tackles) and Lembcke (29 tackles) at inside linebacker and Ruiz (sack) on the outside, Olivares on the line and Lee, who moves from cornerback to safety. Returning assistant coach John Evans is the new defensive coordinator. Senior newcomer Henry Jurgens, a former soccer player, is expected to contend for kicking and punting duties.

“I’d say we have really good leadership and we’ve definitely improved our energy and just our overall strength,” Lembcke said. “We had a really disciplined team last year and I think that’s going to really impact our success in a positive way.”

Last season’s seniors set the tone by

helping the Bulldogs return to the playoffs.

Entering his fifth season as head coach, Styler, said this offseason was even better in terms of participation, even for players who were juggling multiple sports.

“We held people a lot more accountable, showing up for everything, making sure everyone was there consistently. That really helped,” Caputo said.

“The offseason lifts we had were just phenomenal. The speed work we did on Fridays was phenomenal, just the total buy in that we’ve seen,” Styler said. “We’re very grateful for the seniors we had last season.”

Glenbard East is a home game in Week 8 (Oct. 9). The regular-season finale Oct. 16 is at Glenbard South, last year’s third-place UEC East finisher which the Bulldogs beat 21-17 with a late rally.

“Last year was great for the program, but we were not satisfied with it,” Styler said.

“Obviously (one goal is) make it back to the playoffs but we don’t just want to make it back. We want to make a run.”

LTHS football has experience to pursue high goals Record-setting Kuhlman among 10 returning starters, strong senior group

Lyons Township High School senior EJ Kuhlman began the 2025 football season among several candidates at running back.

By the end of the season, Kuhlman had amassed 1,104 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns, including a single-game schoolrecord 245 yards on a personal-record 42 carries in the regular-season finale against York.

“Being given the ball a lot was awesome.

Hopefully I can again this year and maybe spread it around,” Kuhlman said.

Fortunately for the Lions, Kuhlman is among 10 returning starters from their successful 8-3 season (4-2 in West Suburban Conference Silver Division) that included another trip to the Class 8A playoffs before losing in the second round 45-21 at semifinalist Fremd.

Other returning starters are seniors Liam Corrigan, Nathan Fitzgerald, Charlie Harrington, Cole Harris, Brady Koren, Owen Matela, Tyler Stamm and Aidan Webster and junior Ian Collins. Kuhlman and Matela were among the Lions’ eight 2025 All-WSC Silver selections. Team captains have not been announced.

“Trusting your teammates and coaches.

That’s the biggest thing (for us),” Matela said. “All of our coaches have played at a high level of football. They know what they’re talking about. If we have trust and execute, we’ll have a successful season.

Our goal is to at least win the West Suburban (Silver) and make a run at state.”

The Lions gets tested immediately with the earlier Aug. 21 season opener at home against Barrington, which reached the 2025 8A quarterfinals. The Lions have reached the 8A quarterfinals twice in the past four seasons.

“These guys have worked all the way since January. I’m just proud of the work ethic and excited to see how we respond against a really, really good Barrington team,” LTHS coach Jon Beutjer said.

“Right now, the goal is to get better every day. We have program goals, individual goals, offensive, defensive, special teams.

Our overall goal is to go 1-0 every day. I like that we have 10 returning starters. That’s essentially half of the team, and we have

As a junior, Kuhlman had five games with at least 100 rushing yards and five with at least 20 carries. Three of those were more than 30.

“As the game goes in the third and fourth quarter, you kind of get used to (the workload),” Kuhlman said. “It’s way easier after the first drive to get comfortable with that situation and getting a lot of reps really gets me in tune to the varsity level of play.”

Contending at quarterback are senior Brendan McCabe, last year’s starter for the junior varsity, and sophomore Quinn Carroll. Another new offensive threat is

sophomore Jack Williams, who played up with the sophomores last year. Tight end Matela is the top returning receiver (427 yards on 36 catches, 5 TDs) and also is a formidable blocker. Junior Grant Smith, last season’s top receiver but also a Division I basketball prospect, has not returned.

“I couldn’t do it without any of my linemen (Harrington and Corrigan), a lot of those returning guys I’m excited to run with,” Kuhlman said. “And it’s so easy to run when you have a guy like Owen Matela to distract the defense.”

Harrington, last year’s center who played a little defense, will start at tackle both ways. Corrigan moves from guard to tackle. Line newcomers include senior

center Luke Vaupall and junior guard Thomas Green.

“I think we’ve got a really strong offensive line,” Harrington said. “The switch from junior to senior year is so much more fun. You have a lot more confidence.”

Defensively, Webster returns at defensive tackle, Fitzgerald at outside linebacker, Koren and Harris played safety and Collins was a cornerback/safety. Harris also returns as the long snapper. Other possible defensive contributors include senior lineman Zion Crockrell, senior defensive back/receiver Kyndell Barnes and three juniors – lineman Declan Flynn, lineman/ linebacker Ben Sosne and linebacker Colman O’Sullivan. Sosne was last season’s quarterback for the sophomores.

“We’ve got a great bunch of seniors coming now so I feel like we’ve replaced (last year’s standouts) and we’ve got a lot of guys that have a lot of experience,” Fitzgerald said.

Top contenders for kicking and punting are junior Wolfie Ketterling, who saw some 2025 varsity action, and freshman Owen Hebert.

One big change is new defensive coordinator Dan Bielawski, an LTHS teacher who previously was the defensive coordinator at Downers Grove South.

“We have a lot of experience there, but (Bielawski is new) so we’re all learning new stuff,” Webster said. “It’s learning to play as a team and to play well together,” Webster said. “Obviously we want to win as many games as we can but also have fun while doing it. As long as we peak at the right time, we’ll be good.”

Last year’s Lions had a knack for coming through with a key scoring drive or defensive stop in crunch time as evidenced by their 3-1 record in games decided by four or three points. They were perhaps most impressive in beating York 24-21 in their playoff opener after a 34-26 victory in the regular-season finale behind Kuhlman’s three-TD record game.

“We’ve been playing together five, six, seven years. We’ve built up a great bond.

We have great chemistry,” Matela said.

“We know how to play with each other.

Surrounded by great teammates and coaches, we can make a great run this year.”
