Walking tour to highlight Brookfield transportation planning Brookfield on Foot will look at local pedestrian-friendly, bicycle initiatives

Residents of Brookfield and neighboring towns are invited to Brookfield on Foot, a walking tour of the village highlighting pedestrian and bicycle initiatives already in the works or planned for the future, on Aug. 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Brookfield on Foot is part of the series “Taking Climate Action by Prioritizing Walking, Biking, and Transit,” resulting from a partnership with the Metropolitan Planning Council, Metropolitan Mayors Caucus, Christopher B. Burke Engineering and the Active Transportation Alliance, a nonprofit agency that advocates for pedestrian, bicycle and public transit planning in Chicago area communities.

The Active Transportation Alliance has a long relationship with Brookfield, having held workshops to aid in Brookfield adopting a bicycle and pedestrian transporta-

tion plan, which was incorporated into the village’s comprehensive plan.

That followed in the wake of Brookfield adopting a “complete streets” policy, where elements like pedestrian accessibility and bike lanes are considered in any plan for road improvements.

For example, in 2017 Brookfield designated Arden Avenue between Washington and Brookfield avenues as a “bike boulevard,” the village’s first go at implementing

the complete streets policy. When Washington Avenue is resurfaced later this year, Brookfield will get its first formally marked bike lanes as suggested by the village’s transportation plan.

During the guided tour of the village on Aug. 12, village staff, elected officials and local activists will talk about active transportation planning in Brookfield, about what it will cost to implement projects and try to build support for such initiatives.

Initiatives to be highlighted during the tour include the bike boulevard, a multi-jurisdictional effort to extend the Salt Creek Bike Trail along 31st Street to First Avenue and then south of Ridgewood Road to the Cermak Wood in Lyons, and zoning changes Brookfield has made near its Metra stations to promote transit-oriented development.

Brookfield on Foot will end with a lunch and panel discussion at the Linda Sokol Francis Brookfield Library moderated by Brookfield resident Kyle Whitehead, communications director for the Active Transportation Alliance, about the village’s successes in implementing active transportation initiatives, lessons learned along the way and hurdles future initiatives face.

Strike over, work resumes on Brookfield Ave. bridge Concrete finally being poured after 2-month hold up

Construction of the Brookfield Avenue bridge in Brookfield finally resumed Aug. 8 despite rainy conditions with workers pouring concrete for the southeast wing wall, the first of many concrete pours that had been held up due to a nearly two-month long strike by members of International Union of Operating Engineers Local 150.

Local 150 had walked off the job at three aggregate materials suppliers, including Lehigh Hanson in McCook, abruptly halting road and infrastructure projects across northern Illinois.

Union members voted unanimously on July 26 to ratify a new contract with Chicago Area Aggregate Producers, which represents Lehigh Hanson, Vulcan Materials and Lafarge Holcim, the companies that produce stone aggregate and other materials used to make concrete.

The strike halted work on the Brookfield bridge project on June 7, just as crews prepared for the first concrete pours to form the superstructure upon which the new bridge deck will be built.

With the strike over, local officials had hoped to get started quickly on the concrete work and had scheduled the east wing wall pour for Aug. 3. However, union members from Local 150 picketed the worksite due to an issue with the concrete supplier, Ozinga Ready Mix Concrete Inc. The dispute between the union and Ozinga is separate from the strike. Ozinga in June filed an unfair labor practice complaint against Local 150 with the National Labor Relations Board in response to the union picketing at Ozinga jobsites. That complaint appears to have bene dismissed on June 28 and no appeal was filed, according to the NLRB website.

Ed Maher, the media contact for Local 150, did not respond to a phone call from the Landmark seeking comment on the union’s dispute with Ozinga.

Jesse Singer, a project engineer for Ciorba Group, which has been the lead engineering consultant on the Brookfield Avenue bridge initiative, said the project’s general contractor was able to secure another concrete supplier, Oremus Materials Inc., and rescheduled the pour for Aug. 8.

After a full two-month delay due to a strike by union heavy equipment operators against aggregate producers, work resumed on the Brookfield Avenue bridge on Aug. 8 with crews pouring concrete for the east wing wall of the new bridge’s superstructure.

“The project seems to be fighting us every step of the way,” said Singer.

The next phase of the project is to pour the concrete footing west of Salt Creek, then build the form for the west abutment and pour the east and west abutments. Once the concrete abutments have cured, workers will set the beams.

When the beams are in place, they’ll then begin to form the bridge deck, a process that could take up to a month, before pouring the concrete for the deck itself.

“With the aggregate strike there was really no way forward, and it put us about a

month behind schedule,” said Singer of a project that has been plagued by a series of unforeseen delays.

Begun in spring 2021, the plan had been to finish the bridge by the end of that year. The project bogged down early over a request by the contractor to have ComEd relocate an overhead power line west of the bridge.

After that issue was resolved, work came to halt in late summer when it was determined that a water main needed to be rerouted north of the bridge to accommodate the wider superstructure of the new bridge.

Work did not recommence until February

2022 and it took until mid-March to reroute the water main.

Work then bogged down again in spring until ComEd finally removed the overhead power lines west of Salt Creek. Crews completed demolition and began driving piles for the bridge abutments and building forms for the concrete piers when the Local 150 strike brought everything to a halt.

Singer said the goal is to finish the bridge in 2022.

“We’re going to do everything we can not to go into another [construction] season,” he said.

Shells casings recovered after shots fired in Brookfield and removed an unknown amount of loose change from the center console.

A 30-year-old Chicago man who had just repossessed a vehicle on the south end of Brookfield called police on Aug. 2 at about 1:45 a.m. to report hearing about 10 gunshots fired nearby, telling police he took cover and called 911 from a nearby strip mall parking lot because he was not sure if the shots were fired in his direction.

Police located the caller in the parking lot at Plainfield Road and 47th Street, and he told them the shots sounded like they came from the area near 9100 Plainfield Road or possibly west of that property.

Despite receiving multiple calls of shots fired, police initially came up empty in their search for evidence of gunshots. After observing tire skid marks on the road near Sahler and Arthur avenues, police located two spent shell casings near the intersection of Sahler and Maple avenues.

Police collected the shell casings and will send them to the Illinois State Police crime lab for analysis.

Burglary ■ North

Riverside police are investigating an attempted burglary at a business in the strip mall at Cermak Road and Desplaines Avenue and believe the offenders aborted their mission after realizing they had broken into the wrong business.

Officers responded to Ladies & Gentlemen, a clothing retailer at 7929 Cermak Road, Suite F, on Aug. 5 at about 3:15 a.m. after someone called to report two men dressed in all black trying to break into the business. The two men were last seen leaving the area toward Keystone Avenue.

Police could not locate any suspects in the area, but they did observe that the rear door to Ladies & Gentlemen had been pried open. Nothing inside the store appeared to be out of place.

According to police, the offenders may have been looking to break into Lucky Day Café, a video gambling parlor located next door to the clothing store. The responding officer noted that the Lucky Day Café location at 26th Street and First Avenue had been burglarized on June 2 by offenders matching the description of the Aug. 5 incident, using similar means of entry.

■ A resident of the 3200 block of Raymond Avenue contacted police on Aug. 1 to report that sometime after July 26 someone

Catalytic converters stolen ■ Brookfield police responded to the 9100 block of Lincoln Avenue on Aug. 5 after a resident reported that sometime during the prior week someone sawed off the catalytic converter from her 2013 Toyota, which had been parked behind her residence.

■ North Riverside police received four reports between Aug. 1-7 of catalytic converters being stolen from vehicles, all of them west of First Avenue on or around Aug. 6-7.

The vehicles were parked in the 2500 block of 4th Avenue, the 2400 block of 6th Avenue, the 2300 block of 9th Avenue and the 8700 block of Cermak Road. The targeted vehicles were a Cadillac, a Honda Pilot, a Toyota C-HR and a Hyundai Tucson.

Aggravated speeding ■ North

■ North Riverside police responded to the 2400 block of 6th Avenue on the morning of Aug. 7 after a resident called to report an overnight garage burglary.

The victim said the garage was secure at 10 p.m. on Aug. 6, but that the following morning the side service door was open and his electric bicycle was missing. Police reported not observing any signs of forced entry.

The bike, valued at $12,000, was described as a bright orange Tern GSD S00 with a black basket in front and a rear child seat.

Also taken were two batteries valued at $1,000.

Vehicle break-ins ■ North Riverside police responded to the

2200 block of 3rd Avenue on the morning of Aug. 2 after a resident called to report her vehicle was burglarized overnight.

The victim told police she’d parked in the driveway of her home around midnight. In the morning she found the interior of the apparently unlocked vehicle disturbed and items missing, including a lunch bag and a brown leather Michael Kors backpack

containing an employer-provided Acer Pro laptop, mouse and charger.

A neighbor told police he had security video from about 2:30-3 a.m. that showed a tall, skinny man with visible tattoos on both arms who tried unsuccessfully to enter his vehicle, which was also parked in the driveway.

■ A resident of the 3700 block of Forest Avenue, Brookfield, called police on Aug. 3 to report that someone stole a laptop computer from her unlocked vehicle overnight.

The HP laptop valued at $500 was inside a black leather bag left on the vehicle’s back seat.

Later that day, police reported the computer was pinging to a location near Midway Airport in Chicago.

■ A resident of the 4100 block of Raymond Avenue, Brookfield, called police on the morning of Aug. 4 to report that someone had entered his work van overnight and may have tried to steal it.

There were no signs of forced entry to the vehicle and items of value remained untouched, but part of the ignition was broken off.

■ A resident of the 9200 block of Burlington Avenue, Brookfield, called police on the morning of Aug. 4 to report that someone entered her unlocked vehicle overnight

Riverside police charged a 17-year-old boy with aggravated speeding after an officer on patrol reported observing a vehicle traveling at speeds reaching 76 mph in a 35 mph zone while eastbound on Cermak Road from the 7500 block on Aug. 4 at about 9:40 p.m.

The officer pulled the vehicle over at the North Riverside Park Mall and questioned the driver who said he was driving that fast because he just wanted to get home.

■ A 27-year-old Maywood man was charged with aggravated speeding after a North Riverside police officer reported clocking the man’s silver Chevy Equinox at 85 mph in a 35 mph while southbound on First Avenue from Cermak Road on Aug. 8 at 1:35 a.m.

The officer was able to curb the vehicle in the 4300 block of First Avenue where the driver reportedly told police he was “on his way to see a female.” Police arrested the driver and impounded the vehicle.

These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Riverside, North Riverside and Brookfield police departments, Aug. 1-8, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

Riverside eyes EV charging station for downtown ComEd grant will help fund first public dock for electric cars in village

Riverside is in line to install a public electric vehicle (EV) charging station somewhere in the downtown area by next spring after receiving a $10,000 ComEd Powering Safe Communities grant, one of 21 awarded by the utility company in partnership with the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus.

“Through the Powering Safe Communities grants program, we are thrilled to be cutting carbon emissions and providing northern Illinois communities the infrastructure needed for climate progress,” said Kevin Burns, mayor of Geneva and the chairman of the MMC’s Environment Committee, in an Aug. 2 press release. “Electric vehicles and charging stations have significant emission benefits over conventional vehicles. By working with ComEd to provide grant funding to communities and through the EV Readiness partnership, we are clearing the way to electrify our cities throughout the metropolitan region and beyond.”

The ComEd grant must be utilized by the end of March 2023, and although the grant will cover just a fraction of the cost to install an EV station – installation is pegged at between $55,000 and $90,000 -- elected officials last week indicated the village would move ahead with the project.

“We are committed as a board that we will install an EV station within the next eight

months,” said Village President Joseph Ballerine at the board of trustees meeting on Aug. 4.

There may be an opportunity for the village to obtain further grant funding through the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. Public Works Director Dan Tabb told trustees that the IEPA has advertised an EV station grant program that would cover up to 80 percent of the cost to install charging stations. However, he said, the state has not begun accepting applications and details had not been released as of last week.

“We do not have a timeline on the application, nor have we received any information whether we can apply as a retroactive reimbursement ... if we were to install [an EV station] sooner,” Tabb said.

Three downtown locations have been identified as possible spots for an EV station, including one of the hourly parking spaces outside of the Riverside Metra station on Bloomingbank Road, the main commuter parking lot west of the train station and the village’s “green” parking lot at 63 E. Burlington St. Because of the availability of an appropriate power source, an hourly parking space outside the train station would be the cheapest to install, at about $55,000, Tabb estimated.

Installing a charging station at the commuter lot or green parking lot would cost about $90,000.

According to Tabb, the type of device to be installed would be a Level 2 charger, which can recharge an empty battery fully in about

11 hours. Level 3 chargers, which can fully charge an empty battery within an hour, would be “vastly more expensive” to install, Tabb said.

The length of time it will take to charge an electric vehicle could impact where the village ends up locating the EV station. If the charger were a Level 3 device, some trustees indicated that it would make more sense to put it in the green parking lot or elsewhere in the central business district, where it could be used by someone shopping or dining downtown.

If a Level 2 station is the only option, it might make sense to locate it near the Metra station, probably on the street, to make it accessible to more vehicles. Trustees instructed staff to find out what kind of demand there might be from commuters also to explore a possible public-private partnership to help fund EV station installation in the downtown.

Regardless of where or what type of charging station the village installs this time around, trustees uniformly voiced support for the idea of installing EV stations, indicating that the one partially funded by the ComEd grant was just the beginning.

“I think we need to look at this as phase one, that we’re going to do a whole lot more of this down the road,” said Trustee Doug Pollock. “This is just the start. I think that may inform our decision making of where we put them.”

For the first time in approximately 20 years, Komarek School District 94 has a new business manager. On July 1, Imaad Dada replaced Kathy Gibson, who retired as the school’s business manager.

“It’s time to spend more time with my grandchildren,” Gibson told the Landmark shortly before her last day of work.

Dada, 27, had been an accountant for the Elmwood Park Community Unit School District 401

for nearly three years. He actually started working at Komarek School on May 2, so he could work with Gibson to ease the transition.

Raised in Naperville, Dada graduated DePaul University in 2016 with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. He went on to earn a master’s degree in school finance from Northern Illinois University in 2018. Prior to working for District 401 he worked four years as an accountant for the Northers Suburban Special Education District.

It turns out that Imaad is not the only Dada working at Komarek District 94. His uncle, Moh-

sin Dada, a retired school business manager who had worked for Schaumburg School District 54 and Highland Park District 112, has been working for a couple years at Komarek on a part-time basis.

Moshin Dada and his wife Yasmine, also a retired school business manager, have a firm called School Business Management Services LLC, which provides part-time interim help for school districts.

10-day sales tax break on clothing, school supplies Tax on eligible items decreases to 1.25% from 6.25% through Aug. 14

Through Aug. 14, the state of Illinois has reduced its sales tax rate from 6.25 percent to 1.25 percent for certain clothing items costing less than $125 and school supplies.

The “tax holiday” was included in Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s “family relief plan,” one prong of several bills making up the Fiscal Year 2023 operating budget. The tax breaks passed with nearly unanimous support in the General Assembly and provided an estimated $1.8 billion in tax relief for Illinoisans.

“These past two-and-a-half years, for everyone, of managing through the pandemic has been hard,” Pritzker said at a news conference at Roosevelt Elementary School in Broadview on Aug. 4. “And the last nine months of inflation on top of that has strained the budgets of parents and teachers alike. Prices have risen for everything from gas to groceries to school supplies, and everyone is taking a hit. It’s at moments like these that we need thoughtful and creative solutions that provide financial relief for Illinois families.”

The state estimated the sales tax reduction would amount to $50 million in savings for taxpayers.

Included clothing items The 10-day tax reduction includes clothing items costing less than $125 individually.

Clothing items, as defined by the law, include the standard items such as shorts, pants, skirts, shirts and underwear. The tax reduction will also apply to aprons, hats, caps and earmuffs, coats and jackets, belts and suspenders, rubber pants, lab coats, hosiery, scarves, bathing suits, school uniforms and neckties.

It also applies to footwear – shoes, shoelaces, slippers, insoles, boots, socks and sandals.

Excluded items But it does not apply to ballet, tap or athletic shoes, roller or ice skates, ski boots, waders or fins.

Shoppers also should not expect the reduced sales tax rate on accessory items such as briefcases, hair bows, handbags, jewelry, sunglasses or wigs. The reduction also does not apply to sports gloves, goggles, hand and elbow guards, life preservers, wetsuits, shoulder pads, shin guards or mouth guards.

Also excluded are protective equipment items such as breathing masks, hearing protectors, face shields, hard hats and helmets, respirators, protective gloves, safety goggles or tool belts.

Included school supplies Binders, book bags, calculators, cellophane tape, blackboard chalk, notebooks, erasers, folders, index cards, legal pads, lunch boxes, pencils and sharpeners, supply boxes, protractors, rulers, compasses and scissors are all eligible for the reduced tax rate.

So are glue, highlighters, markers, crayons and colored pencils.

Excluded items Shoppers should not expect other art supplies to be eligible for the reduced rate, however. Clay and glaze, paints and paint brushes, sketch pads and drawing pads will all be taxed at the regular 6.25 percent rate.

Textbooks, reference books, maps and globes are all exclud-

ed from the “holiday” as well.

Electronics and computers will also be taxed at the regular rate. That includes computers and related supplies such as flash drives, memory cards, data storage, computer cases, cables, printers and ink.

Shoppers also should not expect any breaks while buying cameras, cellphones or handheld electronics.

The task of adjusting the tax rate for individual items will fall on retailers, who collect sales tax and remit it to the state.

Other tax relief Other tax relief measures approved in the budget include a property tax rebate up to 5 percent of the homeowner’s tax bill up to $300, and a one-time income tax rebate of $50 per individual and $100 per dependent, up to a limit of three children per family. Those would be available to individuals with incomes up to $200,000 and joint filers with incomes up to $400,000.

The package also suspends for one year the 1 percent tax on groceries and puts a six-month pause on the automatic inflationary increase in the state’s motor fuel tax, which was estimated to be 2.2 cents per gallon.

The plan also permanently expands the state earned income tax credit from 18 to 20 percent of the federal credit while also expanding the number of households that can claim the credit.

The measure also set an income tax credit for teachers buying classroom supplies at $250 for the current year and $500 beginning Jan. 1, 2023.

Brookfield Zoo silverback gorilla dies after ‘acute illness’ 42-year-old JoJo reportedly suffered cardiac arrest during medical procedure

The Chicago Zoological Society on Aug. 1 announced the sudden death of JoJo, the 42-year-old silverback western lowland gorilla who had sired three offspring at Brookfield Zoo during his 10 years there.

JoJo’s death was announced in a post on Brookfield Zoo’s Facebook page. According to the post, the gorilla “went into cardiac arrest during an emergency veterinary procedure prompted by an acute illness.”

There was no additional information provided on the acute illness or the procedure undertaken to treat it. Zoo spokespeople reportedly were not available to address JoJo’s death.

When he arrived at Brookfield Zoo in June 2012, JoJo was a popular attraction at the Tropic World exhibit along with the zoo’s three female gorillas, Binti Jua; Koola, who is Binti Jua’s daughter; and

JoJo was 32 at the time and replaced 44-year-old Ramar as silverback. Ramar entered “semi-retirement” upon JoJo’s arrival and was euthanized in 2018 at the age of 50 after suffering an intestinal blockage.

JoJo came to Brookfield Zoo as part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Gorilla Species Survival Plan. Western lowland gorillas are considered critically endangered due to the loss of habitat, poaching and illegal pet trade.

He previously was at Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago, where he sired a female in 2004, and at the Louisville Zoo, where he sired an offspring in 2003.

Keepers thought highly of JoJo. In the post announcing JoJo’s death, Brookfield Zoo stated, “JoJo was very smart and learned new behaviors quickly during husbandry training sessions. He was known for keeping order in the gorilla group by quickly breaking up squabbles and often showed his gentler and patient side when interacting with his offspring.”

Considered “an excellent genetic match” for the three female gorillas at Brookfield Zoo in 2012, JoJo would sire three offspring with two of them.

In 2013, a female gorilla, Nora, was born

to Koola. Two years later, in 2015, JoJo sired a male, Zachary, with Kamba. In 2018, Koola bore JoJo’s third offspring, Ali. At 42 years old, JoJo was considered a geriatric animal, according to Brookfield Zoo’s Facebook post.

“A median life expectancy for male gorillas in managed care is 32 years,” the post stated. “The loss of JoJo is great, but his legacy will live on in the overall zoo population for this critically endangered species.”

With the death of JoJo, Brookfield Zoo has six gorillas – Binti Jua, 34; Koola, 27; Kamba, 17; Nora, 8; Zachary, 6; and Ali, 4 -- in its collection. However, his death leaves the collection without a silverback, though that may be temporary.

“Our Animal Programs staff is working with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan about bringing a silverback to the zoo,” said Sondra Katzen, director of public relations for the Chicago Zoological Society, in an email.

In remarks made just prior to the vote to adopt the resolution, Village President Joseph Ballerine said a copy of the document would be sent to Riverside’s representatives in the Illinois General Assembly, county commissioners and the West Central Municipal Conference, a consortium of more than 40 municipal governments, in the hope that other towns may pass resolutions of their own urging state officials to declare Illinois a sanctuary state.

“Riverside is a small voice, but with the power of our neighboring municipalities that voice will be much louder,” Ballerine said. “I am proud of our village board for taking a leading role in this issue as well as recognizing the power when like-minded municipalities stand in unison.”

In an unusual step, Ballerine asked Madeline Pollock, a sophomore political science major at Case Western University in Cleveland and the daughter of Riverside Trustee Doug Pollock, to read the resolution into the record in its entirety.

“I was honored to be asked to read it,” Madeline Pollock said. “It was important

to me because reproductive healthcare and the right to that healthcare is something I believe in strongly. It’s important now more than ever to establish Illinois as a sanctuary state.”

Trustee Cristin Evans, whom Ballerine thanked for bringing the idea of a resolution forward, said taking the step of reading the resolution into the record showed the importance of the issue.

“I have an 18-year-old daughter who is starting college, so it’s scary,” Evans said of states’ decision to criminalize abortion and seek to pursue charges against those who cross state lines to obtain one. “We don’t know what our country is going to look like in 10 years or even five years, so it’s vitally important that we explore every option and start at the local level.”

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker shortly after the Supreme Court ruling in June announced a special legislative session to bolster protections for those seeking abortions and those providing them. However, that special session was delayed in July and no date has been set for the session to convene.

seeking abortions. Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot last month signed an executive order prohibiting city agencies from participating in any investigation by another state looking to criminally punish those seek abortions or provide them to women.

Also last month, the village of Oak Park, which is a home rule municipality, amended its village code to add a section that protects those seeking or providing abortions. The law prohibits village agencies from assisting in any outside criminal investigation related and states the village will object to subpoenas or requests for information from out-of-state entities pursuing criminal investigations against anyone who received or facilitated an abortion.

While Riverside might not be able to enact those protections through legislation, Evans suggested Riverside could pursue policies along those same lines.

During the Trump administration, for example, Riverside police made it a policy not to honor non-judicial requests from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for detention of undocumented immigrants.

“We can create a policy that Riverside law enforcement will not aid in any investigation,” Evans said.

At Komarek District 94, Moshin Dada worked on lowering the costs of the ultimately successful building bond referendum that was approved in 2020 and is overseeing the financial aspects of the construction of a new wing at Komarek. He also helped Gibson prepare the budgets. Komarek pays Mohsin Dada $750 a day when he works.

“I am helping MOSHIN DADA Komarek because t wo - a n d - a - h a l f years ago the school district had a very substantial challenge,” Mohsin Dada said. “Very soon we started doing some budget alignments and made the school district sustainable.”

Now Moshin Dada is also mentoring his nephew.

Imaad’s father, Abdul Dada, is also a school business manager and is the comptroller for Maywood School District 89.

That family background influenced Imaad Dada’s decision to go into the school finance field instead of doing tax or auditing work, the most common career path for graduates of DePaul’s accounting program.

“Since I have a lot of families members in the business there was a lot of exposure for me,” Imaad Dada said. “I always knew when I was young that I wanted to do something business and number related. With my aunt, uncle and dad, I decided to give

school business an opportunity and I enjoyed what I did so I stuck with it.”

Imaad Dada’s salary is $80,000 a year. He was initially one of four applicants for the business manager position interviewed by Komarek Superintendent Todd Fitzgerald.

Dada and one other finalist had second interviews with Fitzgerald and Komarek Principal Diane Michelini before the school board voted to hire him in April.

Firm also hired by District 103 Mohsin and Yasmine Dada’s firm was hired last month by Lyons-Brookfield Elementary School District 103 to help run its business office this year and mentor Bill Chappell, who was hired last year as the assistant business manager and is being elevated to business manager.

Mohsin Dada said Yasmine will be the main person working at District 103. She is expected to work for District 103 for no more than five hours a day and for no more than 200 days in the year.

Since both Mohsin and Yasmine Dada are receiving substantial pensions from the state, they are limited in how much they can work and still receive their pensions.

Guy Cahill, the interim business manager at District 103 who was hired in January, will leave the district after completing the district’s 2022-23 budget and a couple other projects. In his short time at District 103, Cahill helped negotiate the new teachers’ contract that was approved this summer.

Cahill has been paid $750 a day.

Yasmine Dada will mentor Chappell, whose background was in investments before coming to District 103 last year.

“This group will help him with a oneyear round with the budget and different aspects like that and help us with negotiations,” said District 103 Superintendent Kristopher Rivera.

Setting an example

T

here’s not a whole lot a small non-home rule municipality like Riverside can do when it comes to ensuring protection of reproductive healthcare for women. But one thing it can do is set an example.

That’s what Riverside trustees did last week when they voted 5-0 to pass a resolution calling on state legislators to bolster protections for women seeking abortions and healthcare agencies and workers who provide them.

Beyond ensuring the right to an abortion is protected by Illinois law, Riverside leaders want state officials to ensure women who seek abortions in Illinois – an island surrounded by Republicandominated state legislatures that want to turn back the clock and erase women’s rights to control their own bodies – are also protected from out-of-state criminal investigations.

It’s incredible that so many state elected officials across the nation relish the chance to criminalize a woman’s autonomy when it comes to reproductive healthcare. But there has been a distinct backlash against this obvious overreach.

Riverside’s resolution is a small part of that backlash, but an example local leaders hope will gain traction as the resolution is circulated among Illinois state legislators representing the village and other member municipalities of the West Central Municipal Council.

We would urge Brookfield and North Riverside officials to consider adopting similar resolutions and send the clear signal to women and girls living those communities that their right to make their own decisions regarding their healthcare have the support of their neighbors.

Riverside’s action last week might be largely symbolic, but symbols can have power. Here’s hoping the resolution has its intended impact and spurs state legislators to convene that special session promised by the governor in June to protect the rights of women.

Dare we hope?

There’s going to be a bridge, there’s no doubt about it. Just when we’ll all be able to use it is still an open question.

But as the first of what will be many concrete mixers rolled up to the Brookfield Avenue bridge jobsite on Aug. 8, it again seemed like this thing may actually get finished before winter sets in.

Now it’s really a race against time and temperature.

Since getting started about 15 months ago in spring 2021 -- seems longer, doesn’t it? -- the project has undergone repeated delays that have added up, cumulatively, to about eight months.

Getting the concrete poured before temperatures settle in below 20 degrees is vital now.

While we’ve learned that there are no promises when it comes to the timetable of this project, it can’t be halted again, can it? We sure hope not.

Marking time at the Uveldale/Selborne triangle

A

fter all these years of writing this column it is easy to get repetitive, but sometimes it also is a way of updating subjects and this is one of those times.

There is a small triangular park where Selborne and Uvedale roads intersect – officially known as the Selborne/Southcote/Uveldale Triangle.

It’s the area where I was born and still live, so I have seen changes in the park.

What brought it to mind was when I noticed there were some new plantings.

Exactly what they are I don’t know, but thank you Riverside Forester Mike Collins.

Growing up, there were lilac bushes on all three points of the park. They were eventually removed, much to my disappointment, as they made good hiding places when we were kids playing hide-andseek and they were handy for taking some of the fragrant stems to our teachers.

In the center of the park was a tree that was shaped to make it easy to climb, which we all did, yes, even me. When that tree met its demise, it became the pitching mound for many baseball games in the park. Grassy areas of the park were worn down to the dirt with the running and sliding

during games. It was that way for a few years -- and then …

There was the day I saw Ed Straka walking around “my” park with that look on his face that something was going to happen. Ed was an architect and had contributed his talents to the village in many ways, including landscape architecture.

I went out to talk to him with all my positions on why the park should stay as it was. His first words to me were, “Don’t worry, JoAnne, I know this is where the kids play ball, and we won’t do any planting to prevent that.” What a guy!

Over the years, the park stayed the same with other generations of children playing there, and it was not unusual to see adults out there also. Neighbors will sometimes convene and catch up with each other there.

Recently, there have been new trees added while others have come down for a variety of reasons, some by acts of nature, some by pest like the emerald ash borer. However, no trees have been planted in the center of the park, just as Ed Straka told me years ago. I guess he must have left a note directing that no trees were to be planted in the middle of the park. It’s where the kids play ball.

Brookfield should explore park district I would hope that the proposed study for a Brookfield recreation center would include the option of the creation of a park/recreation district as an alternative to the proposed construction of physical structure(s).

I believe that he original intent of the creation of a recreation department was to develop programs to meet the need village residents where such programs were not available through public and quasi-public institutions, i.e., schools, religious institutions, YMCA, etc., and through the use of underutilized village lands and property to meet

those needs.

We are at that point in Brookfield’s history where a park district could be in a better position to coordinate the meeting of the community’s recreational needs with other recreation-related entities such as schools, not-for-profits and other park districts, to pool and maximize common resources, without maintaining a recreation department, which will continue to compete for limited financial resources with public safety, utilities and public works needs.

Riverside middle schooler wins prestigious cross-country race Hauser 8th-grader comes from behind to take Detweiller at Dark crown

Juliana Gamboa of Riverside could soon have many memorable cross-country races at Peoria’s Detweiller Park.

The Hauser Junior High School rising eighth-grader enjoyed an impressive debut on the course July 29.

Gamboa won the junior high girls 2.1mile race out of 128 competitors during Detweiller at Dark, the annual summer event on the annual site of the IHSA cross country state meets every November.

Gamboa’s personal-best 12 minutes, 37.2 seconds won by 9.7 seconds over rising eighth-grader Brea Counihan from New Lenox.

“I didn’t think I was going to finish first.

I thought maybe I’d finish third or second. I was really surprised,” Gamboa said. “[Riverside-Brookfield High School girls cross country coach Blair Jensen] told us it was more of a fun run, but I decided it would be a nice meet to try my best but also to have a good time doing it.”

Gamboa entered after participating in the RBHS girls cross country summer running camp. Current Bulldogs were among those in the high school girls and boys races in the 9 p.m. hour along a lighted 3-mile course.

The junior high girls race started at 8 p.m. After one mile, Counihan led in 5:44, 10 seconds ahead of the third-place Gamboa.

After another quarter of a mile, Gamboa moved into second. She gained the lead with about half a mile left.

“I honestly couldn’t believe I won because there’s a lot of fast people down there. I was in second place for a lot of the run.”

Gamboa’s love for running began with her father, Paul, and participating in road races such as the Pilgrim Pie Run in LaGrange and the American Brain Tumor Association 5K in honor of Paul’s mother.

As they began also running around town, Gamboa’s passion grew.

“I really love just kind of the feel of your feet on the ground as you’re pushing yourself to run faster,” Gamboa said.

“I really like also that it’s a mental sport.

You have to be mentally strong, and it shows that you’re stronger than you really think you are, and you can accomplish anything if you put your mind to it.”

Hauser Junior High does not compete in the Illinois Elementary School Association postseason, but Gamboa beat her previous best (13:00 for 2.0 miles) from winning a meet this spring as part of RBHS’ Meet the Runners event. At the 2021 Class 3A IESA state meet in Normal last October, Counihan was sixth (12:22.4 for 2.0 miles) as the highest finishing seventh-grader.

go Flyers Track Club. Last November, she finished 19th (11:59.66 for 3,000 meters/1.86 miles) in the Girls 11-12 race at the Cross Country Coaches National Youth Championships in Paris, Kentucky.

In the high school girls race at Detweiller at Dark, RBHS rising senior and twotime IHSA state cross country competitor Bryce Pacourek was 23rd (19:05.2).

“They’re all really fast and supportive.

I really enjoyed running with [RBHS this summer],” Gamboa said. “I had a really great coach, team. I couldn’t do it without them. The people and coaches from other sports, other teams also helped me win the race.”

Besides being a Benedictine University assistant the past 10 seasons, she most recently has coached Hauser’s boys and Special Olympics volleyball teams.

“I’m really excited because between Hauser and RB, there’s going to be a really good connection,” Staib-Lipinski said.

Staib-Lipinski played four seasons for NCAA Division I Bradley University (200710) and was a three-year varsity player at Naperville Central, which included starting for the program’s first state championship team in 2005. She received extensive club volleyball training primarily with Sports Performance.

During her fifth year at Bradley, StaibLipinski completed her bachelor’s degree in special education. Done playing but still on scholarship, she was a volleyball

practice player and worked at the Braves’ sports facilities.

“I had to know how to balance school and social life and volleyball and the recruiting process,” Staib-Lipinski said. “I said [at the RBHS camp] if you’re interested in the college recruiting process, come talk to me because I lived it.”

All three RBHS assistant coaches also are former players for the Bulldogs – new varsity assistant Amy Frey, Jennifer Lyon (junior varsity) and Kim Fitzgerald (freshmen).

Staib-Lipinski said her coaching philosophy has been shaped greatly by Wildes.

“She’s definitely a role model. Just the way she talks to the girls, she gains so much respect,” Staib-Lipinski said.

“My whole thing is taking one day at a time and one match at a time. Everyone’s on the team for some reason. My whole thing is to be ‘on the bus.’ If everyone’s on the bus and knows their role, there’s going to be success.”

Summary: The Park Specialist is responsible for assisting the Director of Parks with the maintenance operations of the Park District grounds, facilities, and equipment. The work includes, but not limited to: 1. Landscape maintenance operations for the Park District. This includes but not limited to: a. Turf maintenance: Mowing, irrigation, fertilizing, seeding, weed control, and trash removal. b. Athletic field maintenance: Baseball diamond infields, soccer fields, football fields, basketball courts, tennis courts, and installation and maintenance of necessary apparatus of each field use. c. Landscape maintenance: Soil grading and preparation, tree planting, tree trimming, tree spraying, tree watering, mulch bed maintenance, and flower bed maintenance. d. Construction: Installation of park/ playground equipment, park benches, park signage, retaining walls, and drainage systems.

2. Assist with the custodial maintenance of all Park District facilities.

3. Assist with any equipment repairs for the Park District. This includes but not limited to vehicles, tractors, any facility, or program equipment.

4 Assist the recreation department in set up, construction, and repair of all special event props.

Qualifications: 21 years of age. A valid Illinois State Driver License (Class A). In good physical condition with sufficient strength to lift and hold 50 pounds.
