Could a community center be in Brookfield’s future?

The village is going to shell out a little more than $90,000 to find out.

The Brookfield Village Board is poised next month to authorize paying $88,290 to Itasca based Williams Architects to conduct a feasibility study of building a community center for Brookfield. Some $4,400 of reimbursable expenses are also part of the Williams Architects proposal. The village had budgeted $70,000 for a feasibility study but village officials say that skills Williams brings to the project justify the additional cost.

Now a full week of events and two-wheeled fun

In 2015, a group of Brookfield cycling enthusiasts teamed up with village officials to create Bike Brookfield, a one day, 10K bike race which took participants on a scenic ride through Brookfield and the Salt Creek Trail.

But in light of the pandemic, last summer, the crowded, one-day event was completely reimagined to showcase all of Brookfield and allow locals to embark on a week-long, interactive ride to enjoy all the neighborly camaraderie and nature scenes throughout the village.

Titled “Bike Brookfield Week,” last year’s program drew upwards of 200 participants from Brookfield and the surrounding western suburbs, with participants ranging from ages 4 to 89 and completing the challenge as either individuals, couples or as a family.

With the option of completing the challenge in either one day or over the course of one week, bikers set out on the open roads of Brookfield, following a specially designed QR-coded map with 20 designated stops throughout the village, many of which were local businesses which featured free perks for participants, including art classes, product discounts and snacks.

Due to the reimagined program’s success, Bike Brookfield Week will make its return on Saturday, Aug. 6 — this time, with a scavenger hunt and “Island Escape” theme.

Christopher Valadez, a Brookfield resident and founder of Cycle Brookfield, says shifting the 10K ride to a bike tour seems to be highly favored by local cycling enthusiasts.

“With the new format, participants raved about the opportunity to see Brookfield by bike all week long,” Valadez said. “Seeing riders of all ages out and about throughout the week last year made our decision easy to keep Bike Brookfield Week as a multi-day event.”

Beginning Aug. 6, at 7 a.m., participants can start their journey at The Compassion Factory Art Gallery and Studio, 9210 Broadway Ave., downloading the official route map to see where the scavenger hunt-related events will lead to. Along the route, bikers will log their findings with their smartphones via QR

On the final day of the challenge, Saturday, Aug. 13, Cycle Brookfield will be at The Compassion Factory, distributing grand prizes to winners who found all 20 islands of Brookfield and handing out free T-shirts to the first 200 participants.

The “Island Escape” theme of the program refers to both the small, grassy boulevardtype patches found throughout the streets of the village and other hidden grassy locations in parks and business districts.

“Cycle Brookfield has a strong member base, but we open our monthly meetings to all,” Valadez said. “As we planned for Bike Brookfield Week 2022, a member raised the concept of ‘island escape’ and we rolled with it, trying to change the fun and add a theme to keep participants coming year after year.”

Like last year, the planning committee wanted to keep an element of surprise to the spots along this year’s route, but Valadez says the week promises to be filled with unique events.

A few event highlights include the Fill My Car candy store sponsoring a “Fill Your Tires” kids rodeo and bike check event on Saturday, Aug. 6 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.; The

Compassion Factory hosting a pop-up island party with Hawaiian leis and a cool treat on the evening of Wednesday, Aug. 10 at an undisclosed island; and the Brookfield Parks and Recreation Department and Kiwanis Club sponsoring a Bike Wash on Thursday, Aug. 11 from 12-3 p.m. at Ehlert Park.

Cycle Brookfield will also be hosting its annual Members Only Oak2Oak Ride, starting from Imperial Oak Brewing’s Brookfield location to the Willow Springs location and back on Sunday, Aug. 7 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

With Bike Brookfield Week, Valadez says the village and Cycle Brookfield hope to encourage locals to drive less and enjoy their town on two wheels.

“Get out and ride!” he said. “There are some really cool sections [of town] you may never see by car. We want everyone to have fun and get to know the Brookfield we know by bike.”

Along with Bike Brookfield Week, Cycle Brookfield hosts other programs throughout the year and touts membership perks including discounts and freebies at various Brookfield businesses.

Wind-up and pitch-in for Wilson Teens mount fundraiser benefitting Rizzo Foundation

Last week three Riverside teenagers who are swim coaches and lifeguards at the Riverside Swim Club put on a fundraiser for the Anthony Rizzo Family Foundation to honor a 10-year-old Riverside boy who is battling a recurrence of cancer. Approximately 250 turned out for the event which was held in the Scottswood Common, across the street from the Swim Club. The event raised nearly $10,000 which is being donated to the Rizzo foundation in honor of Wilson Gregory.

“It was amazing,” said Gregory who will be starting fifth grade at Ames School later this month.

Gregory was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a childhood cancer that starts in immature cells, just before he turned one in 2013.

For the next 15 months Gregory underwent several rounds of chemotherapy, surgery, received a stem cell transplant, 32 round of radiation, and six rounds of immunotherapy. During his time at Lurie Children’s Hospital Gregory met former Chicago Cub and current New York Yankees first baseman Anthony Rizzo who founded the foundation to help families dealing with childhood cancer after surviving his own battle with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma when he was 17.

Wilson was in remission and doing well until this past January when he began having stomach pain and ended up in the emergency room at Lurie. A CT scan and a biopsy showed that the cancer had returned. This year Wilson was hospitalized from Feb. 16 until April 8 and missed 70 days of school. He had a bad reaction to surgery to replace a port and spent several days in pediatric intensive care. He has had to undergo six rounds of chemotherapy and immunotherapy and this week is starting his seventh round of inpatient chemotherapy at Lurie before switching to oral chemotherapy.

Cinkay had babysat for the Gregorys sporadically over the past few years and knows Wilson from coaching him at the Riverside Swim Club. She is very fond of Wilson.

“He is one of the most emotionally aware and caring children I’ve met ever,” Cinkay said. “He’s very socially intelligent. He is so beyond friendly.

He is also very funny.

“That kid does not stop with the jokes,” Cinkay said.

After her babysitting assignment was finished Cinkay was Facetiming with fellow Riverside Swim Club lifeguard and swim coach Charlie Buh. She was upset that Wilson was sick again. She wanted to do something to help Wilson and the Gregory family. Cinkay and Buh began brainstorming, or spit balling as they called it. They came up with the idea of having some kind of fundraiser. Fellow swim coach and lifeguard Hayden Marrs, a 16-year-old rising junior at Riverside Brookfield High School, heard

Cinkay and Buh talking about what they wanted to do and he got involved as well.

“Having a 16-year-old want to get involved in something like that is just so great so we were so happy that he wanted to get involved and have him as part of our team,” Cinkay said.

Their initial idea was to raise funds for the Gregory family but Wilson’s mother, Katie Gregory, told them that the family did not need any financial help. While

The Landmark, August 3, 2022 babysitting in May, Cinkay noticed that Wilson had a poster of Rizzo on his bedroom wall. She assumed that Wilson was a Cubs fan. No, he corrected her, he is an Anthony Rizzo fan.

Wilson and the Gregory family have attended numerous events sponsored by the Rizzo Family Foundation and Wilson met Rizzo again at an event last year. When Wilson was going through his first bout with neuroblastoma the Gregory family had received help and support from the Rizzo foundation. In June of this year the Rizzo Family Foundation paid for a trip to New York City for Wilson who went with his father Dave and two other adults and two 9-year-old friends. They saw the Yankees get no hit by the Houston Astros and saw the sights including going to the top of the Empire State Building and visiting the Statue of Liberty.

Cinkay, Buh and Marrs spent the summer organizing the fundraiser: communicating with the village, meeting with the board of the Riverside Swim Club, working with local merchants to obtain prizes for raffles, arranging food, and handling the myriad administrative tasks that come with putting on an event.

“I don’t think we knew how much would actually go into it,” said Buh, a 19-year-old rising sophomore at Miami of Ohio.

The event surpassed their initial expectations as more than 200 kids and adults showed up for an afternoon of fun and frolic.

“It was just three teenagers trying to cram their heads together because none of us had ever done anything like this, but I think it turned out really beautiful,” Cinkay said.

Parents paid $10 for a child to participate. The event featured a wiffle ball game for children, dunk tanks, pies in the face for the swim coaches (Marrs got about 13 pies in the face), water balloon toss contests for children and adults, slip n slide games and raffles. Wilson, who is not a big baseball fan, threw out the first pitch of the wiffle ball game.

“It was exactly what we wanted,” Cinkay said. “We wanted an outlet for our kids to feel like they could support their friend and our community to feel like they could support a wonderful family and I think we got do both.”

Buh said it was gratifying to pull off the event.

“It was a blast doing it all,” Buh said.

“I would not change one thing but it was hard work. We all put a lot of time and a lot of effort into it.”

“I can’t explain how much I love that kid,” Cinkay said. “He really, really cares about making everybody feel important and feel love and he expresses it physically and through his actions and at the pool he runs around with every child. He doesn’t make anybody feel bad, friend or not, he

will treat you with kindness and respect and he’s there all the time, talking with everybody, but not bothering anybody.”

The event was great therapy for Wilson’s mother.

“Physically he feels better than he has felt since Christmas so it was really fun to watch him run around and dunk kids in the dunk tank,” said Katie Gregory. “He was really excited about it. He really appreciated all these people coming to celebrate him. It was really great seeing him feeling well and getting to celebrate and have fun and just be a 10-year-old,”

Wilson told the Landmark that there is one upside of having to deal with cancer again.

“I can call my sister annoying and no one will get mad at me,” Wilson said.

Buh and his fellow lifeguards said that the event was just what they wanted and hoped for.

“I’m just so grateful for the community we have in Riverside, just to see how many people came out to support Wilson,” Buh said. “It made Wilson happy and it made all of us happy that we have such a great town that we live in.”

District 103 teachers sign 3-year pact

Union prez stepping down after 16 years

Teachers in Lyons School District 103 have a new contract.

On July 26 the District 103 school board voted 4 to 0, with three members absent, to approve a new three-year contract for teachers.

The contract includes four percent raises in base pay for the first two years of the contract and a 3.75 percent increase in base pay in the third and final year in the contract. Actual year over year pay increases will be greater than the increase in base pay as step increases also boost teacher pay. Teachers are also getting increases in their stipends for extra duty work for the first time in four years.

Teachers will pay a bit more for their health insurance with the share of the premium that teachers are responsible for rising to 12 percent from 10 percent. Teachers in District 103 are covered by a PPO plan with a Health Savings Account component. The district contributes $1,500 annually to the health savings account for a teacher with the single plan and $3,000 annually for a teacher with the family plan. The district and staff will equally split the cost of any health insurance annual premium increase of more than seven percent.

The starting pay for a new teacher with a bachelor’s degree and no experience will now be $48,147. A teacher with a master’s degree and 10 years of experience will make $55,397. this year. A teacher with 30 hours of graduate credit beyond a master’s degree and 20 years of experience will now earn $73,896.

“It was not confrontational,” said Superintendent Kristofer Rivera.

Rivera praised the teachers union negotiators.

“They were very collaborative in the structures set for the district such as planning periods and things that enhance student learning,” Rivera said.

The contract was sort of a last hurrah for Toni Jackman, a seventh grade science teach-

er at George Washington Middle School and the president of the teachers union until this summer.

“We don’t bring it to our members unless we’re pretty satisfied,” Jackman said. “When you bargain a contract, you go in with high hopes that you’re going to get everything you want, but that’s not how bargaining works.

Everybody ends up a little unhappy but, in the end, I think we were pretty satisfied. The raises are higher than all the years of the last

contract so we were pretty happy with that.”

Jackman declined to reveal what the vote was among teachers to ratify the contract.

“Our members are petty satisfied,” Jackman said. “We don’t really give out exact numbers, we don’t even tell the district the exact numbers. I can tell you that it takes a majority to ratify and we got more than that.”

Jackman stepped down from the position of union president after leading the District 103 teachers union for 16 years because she will be retiring as a teacher in two years.

“It was mostly because of that,” said Jackman of her decision not to seek another term as union president. “Our election cycle is every two years and I wanted to make sure that I left the union in good hands and there were people there in the role of leadership who could help our union become stronger.”

The new president of the teachers union is Kerry Palider, a speech pathologist at Lincoln School.

Jackman has been a strong union president. She stood up for her union members and was not shy about speaking during the public comment period at school board meetings to air concerns and to advance the interests of teachers. She was not afraid to criticize the school board or the administration and when she spoke she often had a roomful of teachers standing in solidarity behind her.

She was respected by the administrators she dealt with.

The union will likely be seen as less a one person show with Jackman stepping down which she says will be a good thing.

“The membership relied on me as an individual to solve a lot of problems,” Jackman said. “I think change is a good thing and I am certain that Kerry and her team are going to carry the membership into even better days.

This searchable and sortable public IRS directory helps taxpayers find a tax return preparer with specific qualifications. Taxpayers should also check for any disciplinary actions for credentialed tax return preparers. For CPAs, check with the State Board of Accountancy. For attorneys, check with the State Bar Association. For enrolled agents, verify the agent’s status on IRS .gov.

Ask about fees and availability. Taxpayers should avoid tax return preparers who base their fees on a percentage of the refund or who offer to deposit all or part of the refund into their own financial accounts. Be wary of tax return preparers who claim they can get larger refunds than their competitors. Taxpayers should also consider whether the tax return preparer will be around after the filing deadline has passed. Taxpayers

should do this because they might need the preparer to answer questions about the preparation of the tax return.

“She comes out of Proviso Township which is known as one of the most corrupt townships around and she is a supporter and a recipient of largesse from Michael Madigan,” Peraica said.

Peraica accused Yarbrough of patronage hiring in the clerk’s office.

“Nobody is a bigger offender on the patronage front than Karen Yarbrough,” Peraica said. “She’s currently in court, federal court, on the enforcement of the

Shakman consent decree.”

According to a 2019 story in the Chicago Tribune, attorney Michael Shakman, the person the Shakman decree barring patronage hiring in most positions is named for, claimed in a court filing that Yarbrough put politically connected people in jobs that are supposed to be free of political influence, asked employees for political contributions and transferred some supervisors to offices far from their previous assignments in the hopes that they would quit. Some top staffers of former County Clerk David Orr lost their jobs after Yarbrough became County Clerk after the 2018 election.

A Yarbrough spokeswoman defended Yarbrough’s record in her nearly four years as Cook County Clerk.

“Karen Yarbrough’s record as Cook County Clerk reflects reform and improvement at every level of the office from the successful operation of suburban elections to effectively assuming all duties of the former Recorder of Deeds Office.” said Sally Daly, deputy clerk of communications.

Work on fountain at 8 Corners should begin this week Late fall completion is expected

The long-awaited project to replace the fountain at Veterans Memorial Circle at Eight Corners in Brookfield is expected to begin this week.

Fencing around the circle went up in late July, signaling the beginning of the $650,000 project.

Derek Treichel of Hancock Engineering, the village engineer, said officials are targeting late October or early November for completion.

According to Tim King of Hitchcock Design Group, which serves as the village’s main consultant for park improvements, Integral Construction Inc. of Romeoville is the general contractor for the project with Fountain Technologies Ltd of Wheel-

ing performing the fountain work.

The Illinois General Assembly earmarked $250,000 through the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity in the state’s 2019 capital bill to help pay for the improvement.

For the village’s share of the cost, Brookfield will use funds from the Eight Corners Tax Increment Financing (TIF) District reserve, which can be used to pay for public infrastructure projects within the TIF district.

In May 2019, village officials expressed an interest in improving the fountain while making it something enjoyed from a distance. Set in the middle of the Eight Corners roundabout, it’s dangerous for pedestrians to get to and it is not wheelchair accessible.

Treichel said that although state officials have informed village officials that the grant will be awarded, receipt of the funding is on hold while village officials continue to process the grant paperwork.

One of the highlights of the new fountain is a much more dramatic 10-foot-high spray that can be lit at night by programmable LED lighting.

To provide more protection for the fountain from vehicles that, in the past, have crashed into the circle and even into the fountain itself, plans include a second barrier curb, obscured by plantings to soften its look, around the fountain itself. That will be in addition to the barrier curb around the perimeter of the circle.

Included in the $650,000 price tag is $100,000 that will go toward the construction of a sewer junction chamber beneath the new fountain, made necessary because there is a manhole in the center of the circle. In order for the new fountain to be located in the center of the circle – the existing one is not – the cham-

ber needs to be built to provide access to the sewer.

Several options for displaying the emblems were discussed before consensus was reached.

The existing war memorial monuments that ring the fountain will be relocated to Veterans Park, a few blocks south of the circle at Grand Boulevard and Sunnyside Avenue.

In addition to the improvements at the circle itself, village officials have indicated a desire to improve seating areas that ring the outer edge of the roundabout, adding benches and signage describing the circle’s history as a veterans’ memorial.

be a great help. Currently recreation department programs are held in the basement of village hall or in local schools that the village uses as part of intergovernmental agreements.

“The Village of Brookfield, being one of the largest communities in the area, is the only community among our surrounding cities and villages that does not provide a dedicated community space for our residents,” Ferrari said.

Ferrari said the program space in the basement of village hall is only about 1,200 square feet and that the entire department has only about 3,500 square feet in the basement. Ferrari said holding programs in schools requires a lot of staff time and effort to coordinate and that village programs are always subject to the possibility of being displaced.

“Utilization of these satellite facilities, through intergovernmental agreements, requires more office administration, staff training, logistics and coordination versus overseeing programs that can be directly held onsite,” Ferrari said.

Currently the recreation department runs a summer camp at S.E. Gross Middle School as well as at village hall, runs a teen camp at Riverside Brookfield High School, and an enrichment camp at Hollywood School.

A community center would allow the district to offer more programs and consolidate its programming.

“We’re at our maximum of the families we can serve,” Ferrari said. We’re operating at our maximum.”

Village board members agreed that more recreation space is needed.

“I consider this the greatest deficiency we have in our offerings, our current Parks and Rec being run out of the lower level of village hall,” said Brian Conroy, a village board member. “Frankly it’s an embarrassment so I’m really excited about this and I’m excited about what this can bring to the community.”

Village board member Ed Cote agreed.

“The biggest deficit that we have right now is (not having) a center of this nature,” said Cote. “I’m totally in favor of moving forward with this.”

The feasibility study will include a demographic analysis of Brookfield, a market analysis including a community

survey, concept design options and financial analysis including revenue strategies and partnership opportunities.

The architectural firm and village will consider a variety of options including new construction and adaptive reuse.

The now mostly unused St. Barbara’s church property is one possibility.

“There would be no option that would be off the table,” said Brookfield Village Manager Timothy Wiberg.

Wiberg said it is too early to estimate what it would cost to build a community center and how the construction of one would be funded.

“One of the purposes of the study is to determine the need for it, if there is a market that we can serve with it,” Wiberg said. “What kind of revenues could we get from it.”

The feasibility study would be completed by next spring.

Architect Andy Dogan said his firm would conduct a robust and inclusive feasibility study and reach out to the community to get input and direction.

He said that his company would go beyond the usual easel and PowerPoint presentation and really listen to the community.

“We like to go far beyond the traditional open house, kind of canned architect speech meeting with some board and some feedback and really try to meet people where they are in the community,” Dogan told the village board on July 25. “We want to dare to be different. We want to experiment with different ways to reach people in Brookfield, let them know about the project, truly and intentionally get their feedback on any concerns they may have so those can be addressed and the community knows that we’ve listened.”

Williams Architects has a multilingual staff and has long standing relationships with subcontractors. Those factors gave it the edge over two other finalists among firms that bid on the feasibility study. Williams Architects designed a nearly 91,000 square foot community and aquatic center for the Village of Carol Stream and a 185,000 square foot community, aquatic and wellness center for Elgin. It also has experience working on smaller projects.

It conducted the feasibility study that ultimately resulted in the construction of the nearly 15,000 square foot Roos Recreation facility in Forest Park.

The village board will formally vote on Aug. 29 whether to authorize the feasibility study but passage seems assured.

Cops use high-tech tools to make armed robbery arrest Riverside gas station robbed. Suspect in custody 14 hours later

Tuesday evening there was an armed robbery at the ARCO Minuteman gas station located at 3346 S. Harlem Ave. in Riverside. The robbery occurred at around 8 p.m. The robber allegedly entered the gas station armed with a black handgun and ran off with more than $500 in cash according to Matt Buckley, Riverside’s public safety director.

A bit more than 14 hours later Khalid Bryant, a 25-year-old from Berwyn, was arrested while sitting in a four door Toyota sedan

parked in a parking lot located at Wolf Road and Harrison in Hillside. Bryant was taken to the North Riverside lockup and has been charged with armed robbery.

Police officers used video surveillance to determine that after the robbery the robber ran from the gas station west on Quincy Street to a car that was parked at 300 Quincy in Riverside and drove away.

Police were able to identify the license plate of the car from surveillance camera video. The car was spotted on Wednesday morning near the Eisenhower Expressway and Wolf Road. Police from Riverside, Bellwood, and Hillside found the car in the parking lot and moved in and made the arrest as a female was entering the driver’s seat in the car. Bryant was sitting in the front passenger seat of the car.

“We used a lot of technology to identify the license plate and locate the car,” Buckley said.

Rec center worth studying

I

t will be money well spent if, as expected, the Brookfield Village Board approves funds for a feasibility study for a community recreation center in town.

That vote is expected this month and the study would come back as soon as spring 2023. The $80,000 cost would go toward a wide-ranging inquiry into public attitudes toward such a project, what services might be included, how programs would be funded by users and taxpayers, how the overall project might be paid for, and the size of a proposed structure.

What struck us during a recent Committee of the Whole discussion about the concept of such a center was the enthusiasm of board members to explore this and the clarity expressed about the lack of such a facility being an “embarrassment” for a community as active and involved as Brookfield.

That enthusiasm is stoked by the energy and repeated successes that Stevie Ferrrari has brought to the Brookfield Parks and Recreation Department in recent years. She is a passionate advocate for recreation services and community building events that serve all ages and needs in the village.

It is not lost on anyone that cramming so many of the rec programs into the small, invisible basement of village hall is a true reflection of how rec services have been historically undervalued in Brookfield.

While we get the argument that it is inconvenient for the rec department to partner with other taxing bodies, the schools especially, and to house a range of semi-nomadic programs, we hope the feasibility study will not overlook the value of sharing some spaces from both a cost and access basis.

We are not always persuaded by arguments that a town is the only one in an area failing to provide a service. But it is compelling to see the list of neighboring communities that offer the amenity of a rec center while Brookfield does without. It’s also worth observing the great range in square footage and focus of these other facilities. This study needs to tell Brookfield what it most needs, how big it needs to be built, and how we can fund it.

Three local teens have spent their summer planning and then pulling off a wonderful event to honor and celebrate Wilson Gregory, a 10- year-old fellow dealing with a resurgent cancer.

Everyone in this story is worthy of notice.

Annalisa Cinkay, 19, is a lifeguard at the Riverside Swim Club. She has known the Gregory family as a babysitter and has come to admire and love young Wilson. She describes him in the most caring and knowing terms.

She teamed up with Charlie Buh, also 19, and Hayden Marrs, 16, to plan a day of fun and fundraising, centering on Gregory. Wiffle ball, pie-throwing, water balloon tossing, dunk tanks, and raffles entertained more than 200 participants and raised nearly $10,000 for the Anthony Rizzo Family Foundation.

Special people created a special day that reflects fully the community values of this village.

et your kicks on Route 66 this weekend along with local drag race driver Brina Splingaire as the famed raceway in Joliet opens up after being closed for two years. The event this weekend will attract drag racers from all over who will spin their wheels at what is known as one of the premier racing tracks in North America. Attention this weekend to the track will hopefully bring it back to racing prominence.

Brina Splingaire has been racing since she was 8 years old and will be in her 2022 Chevy Camaro COPO 50th Anniversary edition car, which she now uses for competition. The weekend will be a family event as people view the facilities at the track and learn about the famed raceway and all types of cars. Each day will feature time trials to place cars in competition for the actual races. The vehicles will reach speeds of up to 200 mph.

Splingaire is an attraction herself and is one of the most winning female drivers in NHRA (National Hot Rod Association) history.

Currently she has 5 NHRA national event wins and 4 Divisional NHRA event victories. This year, competing in Columbus, Ohio, she was the NHRA F Stock winner. You can find her upcoming schedule by going to her website:

The North Riverside native is the daughter of Jeff and Cindy Splingaire who have owned Jeff ’s Auto in Riverside for over 30 years. Drag racing for the Splingaires is a family event and those passing Jeff ’s Auto on Quincy may see a big “rig,” which not only transports Brina’s car but serves as home on the road.

When hot rod racing, she lists her profession as Engineering Sales Manager.

Splingaire was very enthusiastic when she contacted us about the Route 66 event, pointing out that it’s a good family event and kid-friendly. She emphasized it would get people to learn about the famed raceway and possibly help the sport and the track regain popularity. Time was when drag racing was a popular sport, particularly in the Midwest.

I can only imagine when Brina first learned to drive, which I’m sure was at a younger age than most of us. Her father, no doubt, had to warn her to drive slow and carefully. I’m sure when she gets on the track she is still told to drive carefully … but go fast.

Richard “Rich” D. Buresh, 76, of Coloma, Michigan, died on July 26, 2022 at Spectrum Heath Lakeland in St. Joseph. His life began on Nov. 14, 1945 in Brookfield, where his family were longtime residents. His dad started Buresh’s Lobster House in Brookfield in 1949 and ran it until Rich took over in 1982. He loved running the restaurant until he retired in 2000, and was very active in the community through various clubs and organizations, including Brookfield LaGrange Park Lions Club, West Suburban Sertoma Club, Brookfield Chamber of Commerce, and Brookfield Liquor Dealers Association. He earned many awards and held

OBITUARIES leadership positions, such as the Lions Club Melvin Jones Award, Sertoma Club Man of the Year, Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year, and past president of Brookfield Liquor Dealers Association. He was also a lifelong Chicago White Sox and Blackhawks fan.

After retiring from the restaurant, he and his wife, Sue, traveled and purchased a home in Coloma. He loved Paw Paw Lake and they made it their permanent residence in the last few years.

He will be remembered for his love of people and his culinary skills. He leaves behind Sue (Battle) Buresh, his wife of 41 years, two sisters-in-law, Carole Buresh and Evelyn Buresh, a large extended family, and a host of friends Rich was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Helen Buresh, and two brothers, James Buresh and Allen Buresh.

Born Aug. 26, 1935 to Harvey B. and Marie (nee Gallery) Williams, Ms. Uphues was raised in the Austin neighborhood of Chicago and attended St. Catherine of Siena School in Oak Park and Siena High School in Chicago.

VIRGINIA UPHUES A longtime resident of Berwyn and member of St. Odilo Parish, Ms. Uphues worked as the school secretary at St. Odilo School for 35 years. During that time, she impacted the lives of many, many students and their families. She, along with her husband, Bob, were active in many parish organizations and participants in the St. Vincent DePaul Society. After retiring as school principal in 2015, she enjoyed her time volunteering for St. Thomas Hospice and MacNeal Hospital.

Michael Vitale, 71 Attorney Michael Joseph Vitale, 71, died peacefully on July 28, 2022. In his final days, he was surrounded, as he had been for many years prior, by his loved ones who will honor his legacy by living life as he did, with unwavering love for family and friends, as well as a commitment to hard work and good times.

A lifelong native of ChicagoMICHAEL VITALE land, he showed his hometown pride through his support for the Bears, Cubs, Blackhawks, and Bulls.

He attended Northern Illinois University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1975. He earned his JD from Loyola University School of Law in 1981, followed by an LLM in Child and Family Law also from Loyola in 2002.

He started and ran his own law practice for many years, always treated everyone he encountered with compassion and respect.

In addition to his wife, Susan Vitale, who was always by his side since they married in 1987, he loved coaching and watching his children play sports, from youth through college. He was immensely proud and overjoyed to watch all his children start families of their own and to meet his many grandchildren. He also loved hosting and attending family parties, ensuring everyone enjoyed lots of good food, good music, and good times.

He treated everyone like family, even strangers on the street whom he randomly invited to games with him when he had extra tickets. If he loved something, like Jersey Boys or Italian food, he made sure everyone around him had a chance to love it as much as he did. He was deeply committed to his faith and radiated kindness and compassion.

Michael was predeceased by his parents, Frances (nee Fico) and Joseph Vitale and his older sister, Rose Walker.

He is survived by his wife, Susan Vitale (nee Vidovich); his children, Jennifer (Timmy) Brewer, Michael (Laura) Vitale, and Jessica (Chris) Groenendyk; his grandchildren,

Gianna, Jonathan, Jakub, Zion, Landen, and Amelia; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 3, from 3 to 9 p.m. at Johnson-Nosek Funeral Home 3847 Prairie Ave., Brookfield. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., August 4, at St. Barbara Church.

ESPN announcers likened that catch to ones by four-time Gold Glover Kenny Lofton, who retired after the 2007 season. Another catch linked on Twitter referenced eighttime Gold Glove winner Jim Edmonds, who last played in 2010.

“I have his card on MLB the Show [video game], but that’s about it,” Ragsdale said.

“A bunch of my family and friends were recording it and then it was on YouTube so I’ve got to watch it. The next day, I got interviewed on ESPN with the mic and everything.”

Ragsdale verbally committed to Division I Kent (Ohio) in January. He was impressed by the facilities, coaching staff and new business facility, which bodes well toward his plans for entrepreneurship.

Ragsdale is hoping for another national trip with his White Sox ACE (Amateur City Elite) traveling team, trying to qualify for the RBI (Reviving Baseball in Inner-Cities) World Series, Aug. 4-9, in Vero Beach, Florida. As he did at LTHS, Ragsdale generally plays center field and leads off in the batting order.

The LTHS summer team went 8-4 in a condensed season and reached the June 22 regional finals of the first Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association state tournament since 2019.

The Lions lost to eventual state champion Lane Tech 9-8 in eight innings after leading 8-0 entering the sixth. Rising junior Nathan Anderson had a no-hitter through five innings before being relieved because of his pitch count.

LTHS coach Kevin Diete said other standouts included rising sophomore Luke Nicholas, a lefty-lefty outfielder/pitcher/first baseman, and rising senior second baseman/designated hitter Troy Stukenberg, who recently verbally committed to NAIA St. Xavier.

Roughly 25 Lions played this summer.

Most worked around schedules with traveling teams.

“I’d say a majority of our guys do a great job trying to balance travel with us,” Diete said. “It’s good for them to get that [travel] competition, but high school is important because then we’ll see them and what they need to improve upon.”

Familiarity breeds winning for 10-U softballers

Lyla Pigoni and her Brookfield Little League 10-Under softball all-star teammates brought more than experience in their return to the state tournament.

“This team this year, everybody knew each other and everybody got to know each other a lot better,” Pigoni said.

“What’s good about having a connected team is the more you know each other, the better you work together. If you’re on a team, just make sure you get connected and stay connected.”

Brookfield made the most of those strengths and finished third at the 10-U state tournament, based at Ehlert Park’s Dan Hull Field.

Campbell, Justina Costello, Nora Graham, Kallie Hickey, Vivien Kowynia, Nena Melendez, Paige Olsen, Pigoni, Olivia Righeimer, Lula Smith, Josie Swanson, Maeve Toland and Yannis Villamil. Mike Melendez was manager and David Campbell and Ed Kowynia were assistant coaches.

“I was able to work with two great assistant coaches,” said Mike Melendez, also the 2021 manager.

“It’s been a fun run and we improved from last year. There’s still a little improvement to do. When I huddled up with them, we said let’s stick together. Let’s keep working. Let’s build off of this.”

Brookfield finished 3-2 in the double-elimination bracket format, one victory from Thursday’s championship series. After a 7-6 victory over Oglesby, July 26, Brookfield lost to River Forest 10-6, July 27. Brookfield

scored five runs to overcome a 4-1 deficit, but River Forest scored six runs in the top of the sixth inning. In the championship series, River Forest defeated Evergreen Park twice for the state title (4-3 in 7 innings and 6-3).

Pigoni, Campbell, Kowynia, Melendez and Swanson were part of last year’s 10-U all-star team that was 0-3 at state in a round-robin format.

Seven more players from the 2021 team helped this season’s Brookfield 12-U all-star team win the District 9 title and also finish third at state.

These were the first Brookfield softball victories in a state tournament in at least a decade.

“Last year we were eighth place and now we’re third place. That’s a big improvement and a big change,” Kowynia said. “The 12-U got third and we got third. We were both

great teams. I think it was very motivating and good that we did it.”

There’s optimism that many of the graduating 10-U players can continue their success with the 12-U standouts next season.

“I won’t get really sad about [this loss] because I know we have games in the future, so I don’t have something to look down to. I have something to look up to,” Campbell said.

Brookfield rallied to defeat Oglesby. Melendez, who pitched every game, got a gameending strikeout with the tying run at second base.

“The 10-and-under group learned never to give up, to never lose hope,” Nena Melendez said. “We were about to lose hope.

We were about to give it all up, but then we had a comeback in other games and then we did amazing. So I hope they learn never lose hope.”
