Virtual Scottish Festival and Highland Games

The Chicago Scots, the nearly 150-year-old charity that operates Caledonia Senior Living and Memory Care in North Riverside, will host its annual Scottish Festival and Highland Games virtually for the ›rst time due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The free, family-friendly event will take place on Facebook Live on Saturday, Aug. 1 at 2 p.m. It will feature a variety of demonstrations and performances, along with shout-outs to the community for their support during the past few months.

On Aug. 1 they’ll also open their Virtual Marketplace, where you’ll be able to buy unique experiences and Highland Games swag and support their mission. All proceeds bene›t Caledonia Senior Living.

Common app essay workshop

High school seniors, your ›nal year is just around the corner and college beckons.

In preparation for submitting applications to schools who use the common application form, give yourself a leg up by attending “Rising seniors: Time to Shine – Your Common App Essay” via Zoom on Wednesday, Aug. 5 at 6:30 p.m.

RAC presents virtual artist talks

Riverside Arts Center has released a pair of videos, which can be seen on their new RAC YouTube channel, featuring Zoom chats with two artists whose work was recently featured at the gallery, Mayumi Lake and Stacia Yeapanis.

FlexSpace Director Liz Chilsen hosts both chats, talking with Lake about the artist’s creative practice, her work for the “Towards Luminescence” exhibit and her anity for disco lighting.

In her conversation, Yeapanis talks about her choice to forego installing her own artwork in favor of hanging a Black Lives Matter sign in the gallery window -- identifying herself as a citizen rather than an artist.
