When Lorena Gasca and Ryan VenHorst were elected to the Riverside-Brookfield High School District 208 Board of Education last year with the support of the teachers’ union, some thought that their election could mark the beginning of the end for Kevin Skinkis’ tenure as the superintendent of District 208.

But that proved not to be case as Gasca, VenHorst and the rest of the District 208 school board voted unanimously on July 12 to give Skinkis a new four-year contract as superintendent.

“I think that shows that people have the confidence in him continuing the journey we’ve started,” said school board President Deanna Zalas of the unanimous vote.

Skinkis, 45, is starting his 12th year at the helm at RBHS. He came to the school as superintendent in 2011 when he was just 34 years old.

“I’m excited to continue my journey with the board of education and the district,” said Skinkis after signing his new contract. “It’s been a great opportunity and I look forward to working with the board going forward.”

Zalas said Skinkis has done an excellent job leading RBHS through the pandemic.

“In these times consistency is really important,” Zalas said. “You don’t change for the sake of change.”

Gasca and VenHorst said that in their time on the school board they have been impressed with Skinkis’ leadership. Gasca said Skinkis collaborates well with everyone on the school board and has been committed to dealing with issues of diversity, equity and inclusion.

VenHorst said that Skinkis’ experience was very important “It is my view that Kevin is a good operator,” VenHorst said. “He has so much experience.”

Skinkis was just beginning the final year of his previous five-year contract when the board voted to give him a new deal that runs through June 30, 2026.

Skinkis will receive a 5-percent pay raise this year. His new salary for the 2022-23 fiscal year is $232,463. Skinkis will also be paid an annual retention stipend of $12,000 for each year he stays at RBHS. He will continue to be eligible for performance bonuses of as much as $19,000.

In the remaining years of his contract, Skinkis’ annual raises will tied to the consumer price index with a maximum possible annual raise of 5 percent and a minimum raise of 2 percent.

Skinkis’ performance goals are tied to metrics such as graduation rate, SAT scores, student engagement, student attendance and freshmen on track to graduate.

Skinkis can receive a $4,000 annual bonus if he takes concrete steps to meet five rather vaguely worded goals the board recently adopted.

Gasca was critical of bonuses for administrators when she was campaigning for a school board seat in 2021. She said she continues to not be a fan of bonuses for administrators, but she noted that she is just one person on the school board. Gasca also said that RBHS must pay competitive salaries compared to other school districts.

Nine named to Brookfield economic development group Commission features representatives from many sectors, business districts

It took less than two months after it was created for the village board to approve the appointment of nine people to the new Brookfield Economic Development Commission, an advisory body that will supplement village efforts to promote Brookfield as a business- and development-friendly community.

The commission was one of the key recommendations outlined in the economic development plan recently adopted by the village board, and its members will work with the Brookfield Community Development Department, the village’s economic development consultant and management on initiatives to benefit both existing and future businesses.

Village Manager Timothy Wiberg said he expects the commission to convene its first meeting in mid- to late-August. At that meeting, the group will need to select a chairperson, and village staff will provide

the commission with documents to get them up to speed on the village’s economic development efforts to date and its plan for the future.

“Where it goes from there will depend in large part on what they want to do and what arises organically,” Wiberg said.

Emily Egan, the village’s director of community development will be staff ’s principal liaison to the commission and is identifying initiative for the group as it hits the ground.

“It’s a really good opportunity to get more communication to and from business owners and the community,” Egan said. “I hope that they’ll look at a lot of the plans and initiatives and come up with their own ideas to improve what we’ve started.”

The eight men and one woman appointed to the commission represent some of the village’s biggest economic draws, real estate development, retail sales, banking and foodservice.

The village’s largest tourist attractions – Brookfield Zoo and Galloping Ghost Ar-

cade – are represented on the commission, respectively, by Jennifer Baader, senior vice president for government affairs for the Chicago Zoological Society, and Doc Mack, the owner of several business along Ogden Avenue bearing the Galloping Ghost brand.

“We thought it was important to get Ogden Avenue represented, and [Doc Mack] probably more than anybody has a big footprint there, with lots of properties,” said Wiberg. “It’s important to get his viewpoint and I look forward to working with him.”

Representing the retail sector are David Pardun, co-owner of the downtown candy store Fill My Jar; David Curelo, manager of Tischler Finer Foods in the Eight Corners business district; and Michael Doerr, co-owner of A Sound Education, a musical instrument dealer/music education business on Ogden Avenue.

The commission also includes Phil Richard, president and CEO of First National Bank of Brookfield, the village’s only independently owned bank; Juan Silva,

co-owner of Beach Ave. BBQ in the Eight Corners district; and Christopher Valadez, who represents the nonprofit organization Cycle Brookfield.

The final member of the commission is real estate developer Michael Gatto, who in recent years has built three multifamily rental projects specifically in the downtown area and has a fourth nearly ready to break ground.

His most recent development at 3708 Grand Blvd. caused a bit of a stir as it was being built for its scale compared to the rest of that section of the downtown, but it’s proving attractive to renters, with 10 of its 17 units already leased.

Gatto was one of the people on the commission recruited to be a member.

“We reached out to Mike because he’s had several successful projects and really takes the time to dig into our codes,” Wiberg said. “He’s very well-versed as a user of those codes and it’s important for us to understand what works, what makes sense.”

Vehicle hijacked from couple at gunpoint in North Riverside Police recover car in Mount Prospect apartment complex lot

No one was hurt during a vehicular hijacking that took place in the 2200 block of Burr Oak Avenue in North Riverside early in the morning on July 13, police have reported.

According to police, at about 5:25 a.m., a couple was loading a white Audi Q5 with luggage when they reportedly observed a someone walking south past them from Cermak Road.

The person got to the east/west alley, which is six houses south of Cermak Road, turned around and then ran back toward the couple. The person displayed a handgun and demanded the keys to the car, which was a loaner.

One of the victims handed over the keys and the offender got into the car and drove off westbound on Cermak Road.

According to police, the car dealership that had loaned the victims the vehicle was able to track its movements via GPS. The car was tracked to a location in the 1900 block of West Algonquin Road in Mount Prospect.

Police in Mount Prospect reported finding the vehicle unoccupied in the parking lot of an apartment complex there. North Riverside police retrieved the vehicle from that location and had it towed to the police station for processing.

No arrests had been made as of July 18 and the incident remained under investigation.

Riverside Twp. may settle for ‘perfunctory’ bridge paint job Third attempt to lure bidders for rehab project again comes up empty

Riverside Township officials continue to by stymied in their efforts to rehabilitate the Swinging Bridge, which spans the Des Plaines River between the village and unincorporated Riverside Lawn, just east of the Riverside police/fire parking on Riverside Road.

Late last month the township failed – for the third time -- to entice any company to bid on a project to remove and replace the coating on the 210-foot-long suspension bridge’s surfaces and perform some structural repairs.

While some companies apparently picked up bid packets after the project was formally announced in May, the township received no bids by June 22, when they were due.

Riverside Township Supervisor Vera Wilt broke the bad news to trustees at their meeting on July 13 and suggested she would work with the township’s architect, Ken Nadolski, principal of opera-

tions at WT Group, to reduce the scope of work in order to attract bids for a more basic rehab.

The reduced scope would separate out the structural repairs and forego a complete coating removal/replacement in favor of scraping the exposed, rusting sections of the bridge and giving the surface a paint job.

“I’ve asked the architect to let me know how we can break down the project into essential repairs and aesthetically coating it with the least disturbance of potential lead [paint] issues,” Wilt told trustees on July 13.

Nadolski will reportedly prepare a proposal for new bid documents that Wilt suggested the board could discuss any proposal and give direction at a special board meeting that would be called Aug. 2 when the board has its next committee of the whole meeting.

Wilt said choosing a scaled-back solution will mean the township board must accept that the bridge will need more frequent touchups if it cannot afford or find any company to do a full coating removal/replacement.

“I don’t want the bridge to go another winter without, at least, a perfunctory coating,” Wilt said.

Whether even that “perfunctory” coating job will fall within budget is uncertain.

Riverside Township officials are hoping that rebidding the Swinging Bridge coating project with a reduced scope of work will finally attract bidders after three rounds seeking a more comprehensive solution have failed to land any bids. twice in 2021 without success, the township solicited firms directly for the work and got two proposals.

One firm proposed a full coating removal/recoating at a cost of $725,000. The other proposed a much simpler project -cleaning and preparing the surface without removing all the old paint and then recoating it. However, even that proposal came in at $115,000.

The Swinging Bridge, as it’s known locally, was built in 1940 and dedicated in honor of the late Cook County Commissioner H. Wallace Caldwell. It was rebuilt and rededicated in 2002.

The township last had the bridge surfaces recoated in 2011, but a 2020 inspection reported concluded that the job wasn’t done properly and left layers of old paint underneath, including leadbased paint.

Vehicle stolen from Brookfield driveway Brookfield police are investigating the theft of a black 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe from the driveway of a home in the 4500 block of Deyo Avenue early on July 15.

Surveillance video reportedly showed that another vehicle, a black Dodge Charger or Challenger, was involved in the theft, which took place at about 4:05 a.m. The Dodge is seen on video heading southbound on Deyo Avenue, with the Hyundai traveling about 150 feet behind.

A witness reported seeing both vehicles stopped on Sahler Avenue, with someone dumping items onto the street. Those items turned out to be paperwork and eyeglasses that had been inside the victim’s vehicle.

Once the people in the vehicles noticed the witness, both cars took off westbound on Sahler Avenue and then southbound on East Avenue.

According to the police report, the victim was not sure whether the Hyundai’s key fob was inside the vehicle at the time of the theft. Police did not report any signs of forced entry.

The Hyundai was recovered in the vicinity of 76th Street and Jeffrey Boulevard in Chicago, police said.

Burglary ■ Riverside police responded to an apart-

ment in the first block of Forest Avenue on July 11 after a resident called to report that about a week earlier someone had stolen an Xbox videogame system, and now her cat was missing.

The victim told police that the Xbox had been stolen on July 8 when she had left her apartment door unlocked and returned about an hour later and noticed the Xbox missing. She did not report that theft at the time.

On July 11 at about 1 p.m., she noticed her cat, which she had last seen at 5 a.m., was missing and could not be found anywhere in the apartment. The victim provided police the Xbox’s serial number so they can flag it if it turns up at a pawn shop. On July 12, the victim told police that her cat had returned home.

■ Brookfield police responded to a residence in the 3700 block of Arthur Avenue on July 14 after a resident called to report a garage burglary. The victim told police that someone had removed window treatments valued at nearly $5,000 from the garage.

Police did not observe any obvious signs of forced entry and other items of value were left undisturbed inside the garage.

Disorderly conduct North Riverside police were seeking to review surveillance video from a local cellphone store after a female employee reported that a customer had inappropriately touched her buttocks on July 15 around 6:35 p.m.

The victim told police she was standing behind the service counter at the T-Mobile store inside the North Riverside Park Mall, 7501 Cermak Road, assisting the customer when he reached around and touched her.

The man left the store after the victim backed away and called out for a co-worker.

Police later located the alleged offender in the mall’s food court. He reportedly denied touching the woman, leading police to seek surveillance video from the T-Mobile store.

Road rage ■ A 52-year-old Joliet woman called Brookfield police on July 14 at about 4:35 p.m. to report she was the victim of a road rage incident in the vicinity of Maple and Grant avenues.

The woman told police she was driving southbound approaching Grant Avenue when she stopped in traffic for a reason not spelled out in the police report. A passenger in the vehicle that stopped behind her reportedly got out and threw a red drink at the rear of her vehicle.

No damage was done to the vehicle.

■ Fists flew last week during a traffic altercation that resulted from a near miss involving two vehicles at 26th Street and Desplaines Avenue in North Riverside, police have reported.

An officer on patrol on July 16 at about 11:35 a.m. reported seeing a traffic back up approaching 26th and Desplaines. As the officer got closer, he reported seeing several people wrestling and fighting just east of the intersection.

The fighting stopped and everyone got back into their cars as the officer arrived.

During interviews with those involved, police reported learning that two vehicles had narrowly avoided a crash. The driver of a Volkswagen got out of his car and approached the other vehicle, a GMC SUV. The driver and passenger of the GMC got out and engaged in an argument with the driver of the Volkswagen. That escalated into a fight when one of the three kicked the bumper of a vehicle.

Other motorists then got out of their vehicles to break up the fight, police report-

ed. No one was seriously injured, though police reported that two of those involved had sustained scratches and scrapes. Neither party wished to pursue the matter further, police said.

Vehicle break-in A resident of the 3600 block of Harlem Avenue, Riverside, went to police on July 13 to report that during the overnight hours someone had entered her unlocked vehicle, which was parked in the driveway of her residence, and ransacked the interior.

Missing from the glove box was about $300 in cash. A pair of Ray-Ban sunglasses was taken from the center console.

DUI Brookfield police charged a 22-year-old Chicago man with drunken driving after he reportedly drove his red 2012 Chevy Sonic about 80 feet onto the Burlington Northern-Santa Fe Railroad tracks on July 18 just before 1:30 a.m., forcing train traffic to be shut down for about an hour.

No one was hurt but police reported that the driver of Chevy had a blood alcohol content of .125, which is greater than the legal limit of .08. The driver also reportedly admitting he was “drinking” and “partying” before getting behind the wheel, and police reported recovering a nearly empty bottle of rum from under the front passenger seat.

Crash injures one in Brookfield A 25-year-old Brookfield woman suffered injuries described by police as serious during a crash between two vehicles

at 31st Street and Maple Avenue on July 15 at about 10:35 p.m.

According to the police report, a GMC pickup truck westbound on 31st Street attempted to turn left onto Maple Avenue in front of an eastbound Hyundai sedan.

The Hyundai could not stop in time and collided with the pickup truck before skidding off the roadway and into a utility pole at the southeast cor ner of the intersection.

The driver of the pickup reportedly told police he did not see the Hyundai before turning left. Paramedics treated the injured passenger of the Hyundai and took her to the hospital for treatment.

Police issued the driver of the pickup truck a citation for failure to yield while turning left. The roadway was cleared at about 11:40 p.m.

Plant thief strikes again A resident of the 3300 block of Maple Avenue, Brookfield, called police on July 17 to report that for the second time this year someone stole plants from the landscaping in front of her home.

The last time plants were stolen was in May, the homeowner said.

These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Riverside, North Riverside and Brookfield police departments, July 1017, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

Riverside awards grant to Harlem Ave. restaurant Cubanito Express plans building outdoor dining area

A restaurant on Harlem Avenue in Riverside is in line to receive a village grant of roughly $10,000 to build an outdoor dining area to accommodate the eatery’s growing clientele.

On July 7, Riverside trustees voted unanimously to award the owners of Cubanito Express, 3222 Harlem Ave., a reimbursement deal that will cover the entire cost of making the improvement on a small strip of public rightof-way around the corner from the restaurant along Herrick Road.

“I really appreciate the opportunity you guys have brought us, and all the support from the residents of Riverside,” said Cesar Ambrocio, one of four brothers who are partners in the restaurant, which specializes in Cuban cuisine.

“This is something that we were thinking, me and my brothers, to maybe grow a little bit more and also to help the view of Harlem,” Ambrocio told trustees at their July 7 meeting. “I think it’s something that will help Harlem Avenue.”

The owners have proposed paving the roughly 500-square-foot area where they plan on putting eight tables with enough seating for 32 diners. Right now the

The dining space would be a boon for the restaurant, which opened in January and has little in the way of indoor dining space. For decades the small storefront housed a Chinese takeout restaurant, which closed in 2019.

While the strip of land along Herrick Road next to the building where the dining area will be appears to be private property, it is actually public. The new outdoor dining area, which will be separated from the public sidewalk by a 4.5-foot-tall black aluminum fence, also won’t impact the width of the existing sidewalk.

The dining area would be situated about 20 to 25 feet from the Harlem/Herrick corner and the entrance to the seating area would be on the side facing Herrick Road.

In response to a question from Trustee Edward Hannon about whether the plans for an outdoor dining area had been shared with residential neighbors immediately to the west, it appeared clear that they hadn’t. However, Village President Joseph Ballerine said the improvement would be a welcome change to what’s there now.

“It’s in disrepair at best, so it’d definitely be an improvement to what’s there now, for sure, and also spark some interest on Harlem Avenue,” Ballerine said.

Attached to the memo included in the July 7 village board meeting packet were photos showing examples of the furniture, pavers and fencing the Ambrocios were

contemplating, but no materials have yet been purchased.

Assistant Village Manager Ashley Monroe, in that memo, stated the proposal was very similar to the outdoor dining area constructed for The Chew Chew in downtown Riverside.

Trustee Doug Pollock suggested, with board members agreeing, that their approval of the project also be contingent on the materials being consistent with the examples provided to the village board for their approval.

Because Cubanito Express lies within Harlem Avenue Business District No. 2, the money for reimbursing the owners will come from the business district reserve, funded by a 1-percent business district sales tax.

The owners will be reimbursed for the cost of the improvement after submitting receipts to the village for the completed project.

According to Monroe, the total amount of the reimbursement isn’t known yet, since the work hasn’t been done, but it needs to reflect the information on which trustees based their approval. Monroe’s memo estimated the project, including the building permit, at $9,980.

“Staff was granted authority to approve reimbursements for the project based upon the information provided to the board,” Monroe said. “If there is a significant change to the project or the amount requested exceeds what was approved, I anticipate that we would return to the board for approval of those changes.”

Brookfielder scammed out of $16,000 in bail bond con ‘Attorney’ claims grandson in jail; courier sent to get cash at victim’s home

A telephone scam that nearly defrauded one Brookfield family of thousands of dollars in late June was perpetrated on a second local family in late June, this time succeeding and resulting in the loss of $16,000 before the victim realized it was a con.

A 75-year-old Brookfield woman told police that on June 28 she had received a telephone call from someone she believed to be her grandson. During that call someone claiming to be an attorney named “Michael J. Wagner” also spoke to her and said her grandson was at fault for a car crash that resulted in a pregnant woman losing her unborn child.

The “attorney” told the victim she needed to provide $16,000 in cash to have her son released from jail. He also told her the judge in the case had placed a “gag order” on the case, advising her not to tell anyone

about what had happened.

The “attorney” provided information about a fictitious court date and instructed her to withdraw money from the bank and give it to a courier who would come to her home.

Between 12:30 and 1:30 p.m. on June 28, the victim received a call letting her know the courier, named “Mike Garcia,” would arrive at her home in five minutes. The victim described the courier who arrived as being a black male in his 20s with a thin build, clean cut with short hair, and wearing a white T-shirt.

The victim gave the courier the cash and he left the area on foot; the victim did not see a vehicle or which direction the courier left.

On June 29, the victim received more calls from the “attorney” providing her with updates on her grandson’s case. Finally, on the morning of June 30 the “attorney” advised her that her grandson was

now being sued and she needed to provide another $70,000 in cash.

Later that evening the victim talked about what had happened with a relative, and the victim then realized she was the victim of a scam, which she reported to police.

As part of their investigation, police attempted to have the victim contact the “attorney” to lure another courier to accept more cash. On July 2, the victim attempted to contact the “attorney” twice by phone, but no one answered and there was no way to leave a voicemail.

Brookfield police reported an almost identical phone scam on June 28 that was averted after a woman had withdrawn $16,000 from the bank but before a courier arrived to pick it up.

In that incident, the female victim also was contacted by someone claiming to be her grandson and by an attorney named Michael Wagner. In both instances, the

phone number of the “attorney” was listed to a location in Canada.

That scam was foiled when the intended victim’s husband got suspicious about the large amount of money involved and called their grandson, who told them he was in no trouble.

The zoning variations also reflect the reality of the existing building, which is a non-conforming structure and was built prior to the village adopting its zoning code in 1964.

ISC Capital Series 4000 LLC, whose managers are Brandon Kurdziel and David Itah, intends on retrofitting the convent into a rental property within its existing footprint.

Kurdziel told the Landmark in a phone interview that his firm expects to close on the property within the next month, during which interior plans will be finalized by the architect, Riverside-based Zenon Kurdziel, who is Brandon’s father.

One of the zoning variations granted by the village board includes allowing the development to provide one onsite parking space per unit.

The parking area will be at the rear of the building along the alley and will be accommodated by demolishing an existing garage.

The minimal onsite parking had at least one neighboring property owner concerned about where apartment unit residents might be parking their vehicles.

Brookfield presently prohibits parking on the south side of Windemere Avenue, and the developer has said it won’t be able to rent parking spots in the Holy Guardian Angels Parish parking lot, which is just across the alley to the west.

Village President Michael Garvey said that officials would monitor what happens with respect to any parking problem once the development is leased and react to any issues once they are known.

The apartments themselves, according to a plan provided to the village during the planning review process, indicates they will have between two and five bedrooms. Three of the bedrooms will be located on the main floor and lower level of the building. Two are slated to be threebedroom units with one being five bedrooms. The two-story main floor apartments will measure between 1,400 and 1,800 square feet.

Three more two-bedroom apartments are to be located on the second floor, with one of them featuring a “penthouse” master suite in a third-floor dormer that already exists. Two of the second-floor units will be less than 1,000 square feet with the “penthouse” unit coming in around 1,050 square feet.

The only vote against the special use permit and zoning variations came from Trustee Jennifer Hendricks, who gener-

ally supported the project but had asked that the board include a condition requiring the owner of the apartment building to maintain a fence on the south lot line to protect the Hand family’s privacy in the future.

Hand already has a fence on his north property line, but Hendricks felt that the burden of putting up a fence in the future shouldn’t fall on his shoulders.

“Maintaining a fence is a minimal cost and is not the kind of condition that would halt a financially viable project, but it would protect the neighboring property and their privacy,” Hendricks said. “This is an additional, more intensive use. Leaving that burden on the neighboring resident, I think, is harsh. …

“I believe approving the project without the fence condition prioritizes the development over the existing residents and homeowners, and I think we can do better.”

For his part, Hand called the fence requirement “somewhat of a non-issue,” but he did suggest that the village board allow the fence to be extended farther toward the Forest Avenue property line.

“That’d be fine,” Hand said. “That’d be a way to separate it from the higherintensity use.”

Irene Kolar, 98 Longtime North Riverside resident Irene Kolar, 98, of North Riverside, died July 11, 2022.

Born June 3, 1924, Ms. Kolar was a resident of North Riverside for more than 72 years. She was a member of and held offices IRENE KOLAR in both the Mater Christi Ladies Guild and the Just in Between Club.

She was a den mother and a volunteer at SSCOA in LaGrange for many years. Ms. Kolar loved to dance, do crafts, travel with friends, especially on cruises, and participated in many day trips with North Riverside Recreation.

Ms. Kolar was the wife of the late Charles; the mother of Charles Jr. (Nella), Glenn (Sandra) and Donald (Sherry) Kolar: the grandmother of Sean (Shelley), Mary and Katie Kolar and Joanna (Ryan) Martin and Ania (Jonathan) Gardner; the great-grandmother of Francesca, Caden and Quentin; sister of the late Betty (late Oscar) Peters; and the aunt, great-aunt and great-great-aunt of many nieces and nephews.

Services have been held. Interment was at Queen of Heaven Cemetery.

The Riverside Community Caucus (RCC) is seeking residents who are interested in learning more about being a candidate for the Riverside Village Board of Trustees in the next election.

Though the weather was cooler than a typical mid-July day and the sun was nowhere in sight, energy was high, smiles were big and excitement was in the air in north Brookfield on July 16 as the Village of Brookfield officially celebrated the longawaited and oft-delayed grand re-opening of Candy Cane Park.

Located at the intersection of Park Avenue and 28th Street, Candy Cane Park has served as a neighborhood playground for generations of kids growing up in Brookfield.

But in recent years, the park had become more of a neighborhood relic than a destination. Outdated equipment, a lack of accessibility and worn-out grounds were enough to keep the park from being a favorite much longer.

In the early 2010s, Brookfield had concen-

trated its energy on improvements to larger parks in the village — Kiwanis Park in central Brookfield and Ehlert Park on the south end of town. By 2015, the village began looking into serious renovations at Candy Cane, which had not seen any major improvements in over two decades.

Funding for the park’s redevelopment sat in limbo — first, due to a freeze on state grants under then-Gov. Bruce Rauner and then by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

Work was slated to begin in late 2020 with a completion date in early 2021. But as village trustees postponed the project in the face of the pandemic, which impacted village revenues for months. Construction didn’t break ground until spring 2021.

Redevelopment funding was split between Brookfield and an Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) grant through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources — a program to provide funding assistance to local governments for the acquisition or development of land for public parks and open spaces.

Back in 2019, Brookfield applied for the grant and was awarded $340,000, or half of the anticipated original $680,000 redevelop-

Though the park’s redevelopment was completed last November, with inclement weather and other events interfering, the village decided to hold the official ribbon cutting for the park this summer.

Redesign highlights at Candy Cane Park include a brand-new playground with ADAaccessible swings and separate areas with playground structures suitable for children ages 2-12, a bags court, a tennis and pickleball court, two half-court basketball area (entirely fenced and with separate entrances for each court), a T-ball field with base paths and a new backstop, ADA-compliant walking paths, a new picnic shelter and a rain garden with native plantings to collect stormwater runoff.

A unique feature of the park is a 22-foot SkyRun zipline track — a structure installed thanks to lobbying by students from Hollywood Elementary School back in 2018.

Students in Ryan Murray’s second-grade

class were inspired to come up with the idea after reading a book called “Change Makers” about kids who work to bring positive change in their own communities.

“Terms like ‘legislative branch’ and ‘government’ don’t mean anything to a secondgrader,” Murray said. “But things like this solidify the learning, because when they see what happens, they see what the government does. It takes those isolated ambiguous concepts in the classroom and brings it to life. With this project, the students reminded us to think big. I sure hope these kids go out and start doing more positive change in the community.”

Eleven-year-old Grace Campbell of Brookfield was one of the second-graders in Murray’s class who helped send in persuasive letters and draft design concepts about the zipline to village trustees.

“To me, this project was important because most of the time when something is renovated, it’s the adults’ ideas,” said Campbell, now a rising sixth-grader at Hauser Junior High School. “But, seeing this is great, because this time it was the

Prior to families taking full advantage of all the park’s newest features — and enjoying carnival snacks and homemade tacos and rice — the ribbon cutting ceremony included opening remarks from Village President Michael Garvey and Cook County Commissioner Frank Aguilar (D-16th).

To Stevie Ferrari, director of Brookfield’s Parks and Recreation Department, seeing the redevelopment of Candy Cane Park finally come to fruition was a dream come true.

“This is why we do what we do,” she said.

“This is one of those projects you don’t come across all that often. It’s been 20 years since we’ve seen a park of this size redeveloped.”

Ferrari also hopes that breathing new life into village spaces continues.

“We want to make [residents] feel like this town is the place they want to raise their kids and stay, and having beautiful parks and access to programs helps that,” she said. “We love our jobs — and I hope that’s translated into the work that we do.”

n economic development initiative in Riverside is beginning to have an impact while officials in Brookfield hope an initiative there will pay dividends down the line.

In recent years, Riverside elected officials have created three formal business districts along Harlem Avenue, which has long been in need of an economic boost with vacant and underutilized properties crying out for redevelopment.

In two of those business districts, where the village is slowly amassing funds for economic incentives and property acquisition via a 1-percent sales tax, things have started to happen.

In Business District 1, which includes commercial properties around Harlem and Longcommon, the village has used business district funds to acquire a piece of property it intends to flip to a neighboring property owner to create more parking for his strip mall and a cannabis dispensary that is slated to come to the old TitleMax building there.

While that deal has been hung up on dispensary license issues, those properties have never been as attractive for redevelopment, and the village is able to leverage its position to help redevelopment take place and make that gateway to the village more attractive.

In Business District 2, which includes the commercial stretch on either side of the BNSF tracks, the village is using the funding that the district provides (and will provide in the future) to acquire a second property to create an attractive redevelopment parcel stretching along the south side of East Burlington Street while a SherwinWilliams paint store is constructed on the north side.

As redevelopment goes, a Sherwin-Williams store isn’t sexy, but it resulted in the village acquiring, for virtually nothing, the former Bank of America parking lot on the south side of the street, which set up the impending purchase of the derelict mixed-use building at 363 E. Burlington St. The existence of that business district also allowed the village to use business district funds to extend a grant to the new restaurant Cubanito Express for an outdoor dining area on what is now a decidedly homely landscaped area along the side of that building.

That’s a lot of progress for Harlem Avenue in Riverside, where commercial properties have been seemingly preserved in amber for the last several decades.

In Brookfield, there’s a new Economic Development Commission whose members have been drawn from some of the village’s most important and high-profile businesses and attractions, such as Brookfield Zoo, Galloping Ghost Arcade and First National Bank of Brookfield.

But there’s also representation from the village’s mom-and-pop retail sector as well as from the real estate redevelopment sector — something the village has spent the past five years trying to jump start through zoning updates.

Tapping into the expertise of these professionals can only assist elected officials and staff advance the economic development goals of the village.

Vacation postcards just a different format now

ello out there to all you vacationers and the rest of us. It crossed my mind that with so many people on vacation this time of year they are anxious to share their travels with us and we are happy to have them do so. However, the means of sharing those memories and good times have changed over the years.

Time was when you embarked on a trip your first stop was at the local souvenir shop, drug store or any place where you might be able to purchase a postcard depicting scenes of where you were vacationing.

It was important to purchase them early so you could send them promptly, ensuring they would arrive to whomever before you returned home.

Most of the time the pictures were of sites that had significance to the area.

How many times did I send the postcard of the Andy Gump statue? Andy Gump was a cartoon character created in the Chicago Tribune by Sidney Smith, who lived in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. The statue is in a downtown park there and is the second such statue -- the first having been smashed to smith-

ereens by hooligans. I’m sure tucked away somewhere is one of those postcards that never got sent.

Postcards had a small space on the back where you could pen a message as long as it was short and simple. You could wait until you got home to tell the rest of the story. One of the things I liked about postcards were the stamps. The ones from foreign countries had pretty stamps and they could go on the refrigerator.

Now we can get the word or the picture out immediately through Facebook and Instagram. We can even see what is happening with our traveling friends as it is happening and even communicate with them. We can keep in touch on a daily basis and almost be a part of it.

As I was looking up a few things for this column, I came across vintage post cards which are really lovely and works of art. The characters, scenes and colors are pleasing to the eye. I sure there are those who have collections of vintage postcards.

So, enjoy your vacation, keep in touch and keep those cards and letters coming. I assure you I won’t be bored looking at the pictures on my phone or computer.

Thanks from Riverside Friends of the Fourth Thank you to all who helped make the Riverside Independence Day celebration a wonderful event. It was a collaborative effort of the whole village with particular thanks to Matt Buckley, the police and fire departments, Ron Malchiodi and the staff at the Recreation Department.

Thank you to the Public Works Department who set the venue up and by the next day you would not have known there was a big party. Thanks also to Riverside TV for making it possible to view the event whenever desired through their professional staff and taping.

Two RBHS grads snapped up early in MLB draft Owen Murphy goes 20th overall to Atlanta, while Ryan Cermak picked at 71 by Rays

Owen Murphy and Ryan Cermak grew up just a couple of blocks away from each other in Riverside. Both played for the Riverside Rockets travel team that Cermak’s father Jeff started in 2009 when Cermak was just 8 years old, and both were on the roster of the same Riverside-Brookfield High School team when Cermak was a senior and Murphy was a freshman.

On July 17 they both were high draft

picks in the Major League amateur draft.

The defending World Series champion Atlanta Braves picked Murphy with the 20th pick in the first round. About three hours later, Cermak was chosen in the second round, with the 71st pick in the draft, by the Tampa Bay Rays.

Murphy was picked at least 15 spots higher than where he was projected to go in mock drafts.

“I’m still in a state of shock, to be honest with you,” Murphy told the Landmark about 24 hours after being drafted. “I didn’t expect to be taken that early, but the Braves picked me up and it’s such an amazing feeling.”

Murphy and Cermak are believed to be the highest drafted players ever from Riverside-Brookfield High School. They are the first alumni drafted since Will Kincanon was drafted in the 11th round by the

Both Murphy and Cermak hosted draft night parties at their Riverside homes for family, friends and teammates.

Cermak got emotional when his name was called.

“It was amazing,” Cermak said. “I’m not a crier but I will admit I did cry a little bit.

I was off to the side with my friends and they started screaming for about 10, 15 seconds, just like pushing me with pure happiness. First thing I did I got up and went straight to my mom and hugged her and then went straight to my dad and hugged him. That was pretty much my moment.”

Murphy, 18, is a 6-1, 190-pound righthanded pitcher and infielder, who graduated from RBHS in May after a stellar high school career. Last summer he made the Team USA 18-under squad, and following his senior season in June he was named

the Gatorade Player of the Year in Illinois.

This spring Murphy was practically unhittable on the mound for RBHS, compiling a 9-0 record with a microscopic 0.12 ERA. He struck out 157 batters in 58.1 innings and threw four no hitters in his senior year. As a hitter, Murphy hit .578 and belted 18 home runs while driving in 75 runs.

Murphy committed to Notre Dame as a sophomore, but he is planning on walking away from his scholarship to sign with the Braves and begin his professional career immediately. He is expected to be offered a signing bonus in the $3 million range.

Murphy declined to go into contract details but said he could report to the Atlanta minor league system as early as the end of the week.

“It will be this week, I’m not sure when but it will be this week,” Murphy said of his signing.

“I’ve always had the mindset of I want to play the highest level of baseball as quickly as possible,” Murphy said.

Despite his gaudy hitting statistics, Murphy’s immediate future will be on the mound. While he wanted to try being a two-way player, the Braves are insisting that he focus entirely on pitching.

“I’m actually going to just be a pitcher,” Murphy said.

“That was included in the deal and everything, and that’s the way it’s shaking out. It’s going to be hard to say goodbye to the two-way life, but this is what the Braves see the most fit. I’m still an athlete so I’m willing to do whatever, but what the organization wants me to do right now is pitch, so that’s what I’m going to do for them.”

Scouts loved Murphy’s fastball, which has been clocked in the low to mid 90s and has excellent movement. Scouts liked his competitive fire and relentless work ethic as much as his fastball.

Cermak and Murphy overlapped one year at RBHS, but they didn’t really play together because Cermak missed almost all of his senior season in 2019 with an injury suf-

Cermak, 21, was not as heavily recruited as Murphy. He went to Illinois State University and struggled as a freshman, playing third base and hitting .208 during a 19-game COVID-shortened season.

Three games into his sophomore season at ISU, Cermak was moved to center field where he could use his great speed and he blossomed. At 6-2 and 215 pounds, Cermak possesses both speed and power, and he quickly developed

into an elite center fielder with great range and a powerful arm.

He was one of only three college outfielders to win a Rawlings Gold Glove award, won two straight Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Year awards and was named to the all-conference team two consecutive years. He also developed into a power hitter, batting .340 with 19 home runs and 43 RBI this past season.

Cermak said a key to his success was learning not to beat himself up over inevitable failures, such as strikeouts and errors, that are part of baseball.

“This is just a kid’s game,” Cermak said. “You can’t get down on yourself when you fail.”

Cermak said he would have been happy to be drafted by any team, but said the Rays were his second favorite team after the White Sox when he was growing up. He especially liked former Rays third baseman Evan Longoria.

He is projected to receive a signing bonus of around $900,000, and told the Landmark he, too, expects to sign this week and begin his professional career in the coming days at the minor league level.

Cermak and Murphy kept in touch with each other over the last few years and it was exciting for both of them to be drafted on the same night. They caught up the day after the draft to marvel at what’s happened “It’s amazing just to have two guys from the same little town of Riverside go and have the opportunity to go play high level baseball, professional baseball, at such young ages,” Murphy said. “I mean it’s so cool. It’s hard to even put into words.”

on’t ignore it. Most IRS letters and notices are about federal tax returns or tax accounts. Each notice deals with a specific issue and includes specific instructions on what to do.

Don’t panic. The IRS and its authorized private collection agencies do send letters by mail. Most of the time, all the taxpayer needs to do is read the letter carefully and take the appropriate action.

Don’t throw it away. Taxpayers should keep notices or letters they receive from the IRS. These include adjustment notices when an action is taken on the taxpayer’s account; Economic Impact Payment notices; and letters about advance payments of the 2021 child tax credit. They may need to refer to these when filing their 2021 tax return in 2022. In general, the IRS suggests that taxpayers keep records for three years from the date they filed the tax return.

Don’t reply unless instructed to do so. There is usually no need for a taxpayer to reply to a notice unless specifically instructed to do so. On the other hand, taxpayers who owe should reply with a payment. IRS.gov has information about payment options.
