How are Brookfield’s residents reacting to library construction?

Work to correct the building’s leaking outer envelope started in May

Repairs are underway at the Linda Sokol Francis Brookfield Library to correct an issue present since the building’s opening: a “black substance” has been dripping from the building’s exterior since shortly after it was completed five years ago.

“When I came over here, and I saw [the construction], I thought ‘what the heck is going on now,’” Brookfield resident Eileen Dow-Sarocco said.

Since July 2021, when construction on the new library finished, the substance has been dripping from the library’s outside walls. The leak was a combination of several building materials, which chemically combined to form the oozing substance. In an FAQ on the library’s website, the library said it was replacing the building’s envelope “ahead of possible water incursions and structural damage.” Repairs to fix the issue started on May 11 and are expected to last through September.

2026 may be the last year Brookfield has an active beautification commission before the group sunsets.

A proposal to phase out the commission was one of the main discussion points of the group’s most recent meeting on Tuesday, July 7. The next day, Village Trustee Katie Kaluzny, who is the village board’s liaison to the group, said many of the commission’s duties have “evolved over time” until the commissioners found themselves without much to do.

Brookfield debuts French artisan market There were good vibes and sunshine aplenty on Wednesday, July 8

Residents said “Oui, oui” last week to Brookfield’s first ever French market.

The village debuted the first of six French artisan markets the evening of Wednesday, July 8, from 4-7 p.m. on Broadway Avenue near Eight Corners.

The French market will take place each Wednesday until Aug. 12.

The street market, which stretched about a quarter of the way between the roundabout and the intersection with Lincoln Avenue, featured vendors selling homemade pastries, lemonade, candles, jewelry, baskets and more. There was also live music and a cartoon artist drawing live portraits or painting landscapes of the village for people.

During the market, the vendors at the Brookfield Shops retail incubator program nearby were also open for business, a departure from their regular weekendonly hours.

Chicago native António Alban is the owner and operator of Ye Old Proof & Crumb, selling breads and baked goods made from scratch alongside his wife.

“This turnout right now turned out great. There’s a lot of people; there’s a lot of vendors. It’s very promising,” Alban told the Landmark. “While we were at our commercial kitchen, some of the guys there recommended a few of these French markets to apply to. That’s how I heard about this one.”

Kendra Shaw of KGPS Consulting, which helped village staff bring the retail incubator to life last year, said residents were unexpectedly lining up nearby before the market opened at 4 p.m. to get in as soon as possible.

Justine Martin, formerly a school social worker in Cicero, operates Giraffe Goddess Gifts, a shop specializing in hand-carved wooden spoons and soapstone goods as well as hand-woven baskets. She sources her goods from members of the Kamba tribe in Kenya, where she lives with her husband.

Martin said she returns to the Chicago area once or twice per year and brings the tribe’s handmade items with her to sell.

“I was thinking, ‘How can I make an income?’ I fell in love with this handmade culture. The women make all the baskets

They live in a dry region, so they started to rely more on handicrafts, and then I added soapstone. The women sand the item, after it’s carved in water, with four layers of sandpaper to make it so smooth.”

Martin said she decided to bring her wares to the French market due to her local connections.

“My family is from Western Springs. My brother lives in Brookfield, and I have other family here. It’s close by, and it’s a town that I love,” she said.

Pam Coppin runs a business, alternately called Chef Pam’s Catering and Chef Pam’s Pasties, doing catering and selling pasties, English hand pies filled with

meat or vegetables. Originally from the UK, Coppin said her team sailed across the pond to open a restaurant and catering business in Florida before opening shop in Chicago, too.

“We work with several of the French markets, and this came through that,” she said.

“We weren’t quite sure how business would go because, of course, we’re supposed to be on week four now, and we’re on week one, so we weren’t sure. We’re absolutely pleased.

It’s a very lovely crowd of people, very pleasant. Get to talk to lots of different people that you wouldn’t usually speak to.”

Coppin said her business was scheduled for the first three weeks of the French market in June, which were repeatedly cancelled due to forecasts of heavy rain and even a tornado.

“It was difficult. The first week, we actually got here and set up and then were told the tornado was close by. Chaos broke loose. From the UK, we’re not quite used to tornadoes, so it was quite a new experience for us. That was that. We closed everything down, and the next two weeks, we were given early [notice] at 12 o’clock,” Coppin said.

But that first week, her group lost their entire inventory, she said.

“The products we well, they’re actually baked fresh to bring to market. On that first week, we had all our stock with us, and they’re not reusable. We wouldn’t reuse them the next day for another market, so that was a tough week,” she said. Other than that, we got through those weeks without [the French market], and now we’re here.”

Riverside Lions are taking donations for Lake Geneva

The Wisconsin community was battered by deadly storms July 4 weekend

In the wake of storms that left three children dead and wreaked havoc through the area of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, on Friday, July 3, the Riverside Lions Club is accepting donations that will help the Lake Geneva community recover.

“We had two disasters, if you will, that took place on that day. One was the boating tragedy, and the second was the storm that went through,” said Bill Kingsley, the

president of the Lake Geneva Lions Club.

“The storm created a tremendous amount of damage, not only on Geneva Lake but also on Como Lake and some of the surrounding areas.”

Matthew Stinebrink, another member of the Lake Geneva Lions Club, spearheaded efforts after receiving a donation from a friend in Kenosha County. As the owner of Stinebrink’s Piggly Wiggly, a local grocery store, he worked with the owners of Papa’s Blue Spruce Resort, a restaurant and bar, to have each issue $50 gift cards that resi-

dents in need can use toward restocking their refrigerators and pantries.

“The biggest area of need is the Lake Como community. That’s where I live too, and it just got devastated. Trees smashing through living rooms, smashing through bathrooms, going through people’s windows. Some people had to evacuate their homes and stay elsewhere,” Stinebrink told the Landmark. “A lot of people lost See LAKE GENEVA on page 10

House burns in Brookfield

There was a house fire on the 3200 block of Madison Avenue in Brookfield on Wednesday, July 8. Interim Fire Chief Matthew Dubik said three residents safely evacuated the home while one injured firefighter was transported to LaGrange Memorial Hospital. Dubik said the fire, of which the cause is still under investigation, started on the second floor before expanding into the attic. He praised his department for preventing the spread of the fire to a neighboring home just inches away.

Some projects the commission is now responsible for, like Project N.I.C.E., will be moved fully under village staff ’s umbrella moving forward, according to agenda documents. Other responsibilities, like doling out Brookie Awards to businesses to recognize facade improvements, will be discontinued.

“I’ve been talking to [the commissioners] over time, like, ‘Are you going to renew?

If you did, what would you want us to be doing?’ I don’t know that anyone has put their finger on what that thing is,” Kaluzny said. “We all enjoy what we’re doing, but is it really advancing the beautification of Brookfield as it was, maybe, when it started? Berwyn driver’s back light was out Brookfield police on July 1 ticketed an 18-year-old Berwyn man after he drove a car without a working taillight.

Around 11:30 p.m., an officer noticed the passenger-side taillight on the man’s car was out. The officer pulled their squad car behind the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop on the 9400 block of Ogden Avenue.

The officer explained the reason for the stop to the man, who was driving.

The man said he did not have his wallet on his person and could not provide a copy of his ID. The man shared his name and date of birth, which the officer ran through the police database to learn the man had never been issued a driver’s license, which the man later acknowledged.

The officer issued the man citations for driving without a valid license and one count of an inoperative taillight and set an Aug. 11 court date. The officer told the man his car would have to be towed from the scene of the traffic stop. Around 1 a.m., someone else whose information was redacted arrived at the police station and paid the tow fee.

Iowa City man ticketed Brookfield police ticketed a 22-year-old man from Iowa City, Iowa, on July 3.

Around 2:45 a.m., an officer was on patrol heading west on the 8700 block of 31st Street when they observed a car accelerating to a speed of 56 mph in the posted 30 mph zone in the opposite direction. The officer made a U-turn and pulled the car over for a traffic stop after they caught up with it near the intersection with Golfview Avenue.

The officer explained the reason for the stop to the driver and asked the man why he was speeding. The man said he was only driving home, according to police. The officer issued the man a citation for aggravated speeding and had his vehicle towed.

Welfare check for dogs On June 30, Brookfield police conducted a welfare check after a resident reported they were worried about their neighbor’s

dogs.

Around 1:45 a.m., an officer was dispatched to the 9100 block of Brookfield Avenue for a welfare check after a resident called dispatchers to share their concerns about their neighbor’s three dogs due to that neighboring home having no power since the day before.

The officer made contact with a man at the residence in question and shared the reason for the welfare check. The man said he was planning to take the dogs to someone else’s residence if power had not been restored by the next day. The officer confirmed with the man that the dogs had access to food and water.

The officer later contacted the complainant and explained what they had learned.

The officer told the complainant to reach out again if they further believed the dogs were not being properly cared for.

These items were obtained from the Brookfield Police Department reports dated June 29 to July 6; they represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Anyone named in these reports has only been charged with a crime and cases have not yet been adjudicated. We report the race of a suspect only when a serious crime has been committed, the suspect is still at large and police have provided us with a detailed physical description of the suspect as they seek the public’s help in making an arrest.

Aug. 15: The annual Cori’s Kids Triathlon features modified triathlons for ages 7 and up. The triathlon starts at the Riverside Swim Club at 100 Bloomingbank Rd. A $40 registration fee is required. The Cori Sikich Foundation supports the event, which is held in honor of Cori Sikich. Sikich grew up in Riverside and died in 2002 after she developed an eating disorder.

Aug. 15: North Riverside will be screening “Singin’ in the Rain” at the rear parking lot of the Village Commons. The screening will start at dusk, around 7:50 p.m.

Aug. 22: From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Commons Park in North Riverside will host Art in the Park. Local artists and crafters will feature their pieces for sale and display. At-

Construction through Sept. from page 1 it’s a little soon for this to happen,” said Chyanne Husar, an architect and founder of Chicago-based architecture and sustainability firm Husarch. Husar was interviewed as she happened to visit the library July 6. “It’s definitely a shame that the village has to go through this, but I’m glad that they’re taking corrective action.”

Issues like these are not unheard of, she said. While they could result from design, construction, or material issues, Husar said that, without knowing details about the construction process, “you can’t really point fingers.” In an unfiled legal complaint last year, library officials alleged the issue stemmed from effects of the high

temperatures induced by the exterior envelope’s design on the construction materials that liquefied into the substance.

Some Brookfield residents are worried about the project’s potential cost to the library. Brookfield resident Eileen Skisak said she hoped the library did not have to pay for the project.

“We’ve all been through construction projects. When the material’s not up to standard, they [the contractors] come back, and they should pay to fix it,” Skisak said.

Library officials last year settled out of court with contractors and subcontractors on the initial building project. According to the settlement, the construction companies involved are providing $635,000. The library will pay the remaining expenses, $1.13 million, out of its reserves, Executive Director Kimberly Coughran said in an email to the Landmark after construction began.

While Dow-Sarocco said she loves the

library and feels the taxes she pays are “worth it,” she believes “a lot of money at the library goes wasted.”

“If it was a construction error, then it should be paid for by the constructors, and not the people of Brookfield,” Dow-Sarocco said.

Coughran said the costs of the repairs will represent “zero burden to taxpayers,” since they come entirely from the library’s cash reserves.

While the ongoing construction may present some financial questions for the library, it is not interrupting the library’s operations. Danny Dane, who moved to Brookfield six months ago, says the construction is “not bad.”

“It doesn’t really affect the functionality of the library,” he said.

Construction is expected to continue through the end of September. The library anticipates maintaining its regular summer hours throughout the whole project.

“If you know a Lion, go to a Lion, and we’ll get those funds,” he said. “Lions have a motto: ‘Where there’s a Lion, there’s a need.’ When we see that people are in need, we step up to help. Many of our own residents vacation up there or have friends up there. It’s quite local.”

brink said the Lake Geneva Lions Club is working to put together an emergency fund for the next time danger strikes so they can act more proactively than reactively, but they said all donations will go toward staunching the immediate needs of the community.

“We’re not going to clean this thing up here in the next few days. There’s going to be a lingering, no pun intended, wake effect from this type of storm,” Kingsley said. “We really appreciate not only all the concerns but all the contributions from the hardworking people down in the Brookfield-Riverside area and the community that are supporting the work that we’re doing up here. Every little bit helps; it really does.”

Jim Thome coached Landon growing up and then joined Nazareth’s coaching staff during Landon’s tenure.

“He’s had so much (influence) from the dad perspective and the coach perspective. I’d say he’s my hero,” Thome said. “Just being able to play for him and have him in the dugout to talk whenever I wanted to with tips maybe other dads might not have. It’s special to have him through the whole high school scene and he’ll be with me wherever I go next.”

Then there’s 2025 Nazareth graduate Jaden Fauske, who was last season’s Gatorade Illinois Player of the Year and drafted by the White Sox in last year’s second round (No. 44). The outfielder is excelling at Class A Kan-

napolis.

“I’ve been texting him. I FaceTimed him right after the name had been called,” Thome said. “It’s going to be awesome to be reunited with him and get back working together.”

They are the two highest among eight Nazareth players who have been drafted, following Cooper Malamazian, Ryan Smith, Michael Prosecky, Derek Salata, Brandon Bossard and Mike Spidale. 2024 graduate Malamazian currently plays for Indiana University.

“It’s special for the kids to have back-toback top picks. I don’t know how much more blessed we could be as a school and staff to have those kids around,” Milano said.

“Coach Milano, he’s been like a second dad to me almost,” Thome added. “I told him I’m going to miss when he’s throwing (batting practice) at Naz.”

LTHS grad Slightom goes to Kansas City in MLB draft Right-handed pitching standout selected No. 56 in second round

Jack Slightom expected to be taken during the first day of the Major League Baseball draft Saturday but didn’t anticipate having trouble finding out.

“We couldn’t get (MLB.com) pulled up,” Slightom said.

When Slightom was selected by the Kansas City Royals in the second round with the No. 56 pick overall, the recent Lyons Township High School graduate still was as surprised as the more than 50 guests for a draft party at his home in Willow Springs.

“When I found out is when everyone else found out. I didn’t know before at all,” Slightom said. “(Being drafted) was awesome. When I found out I got picked, I didn’t really know before, like it came out of nowhere.”

The right-handed pitcher’s dedication and huge progression senior year paid off in becoming the fifth LTHS player to be drafted. When the news came, Slightom was upstairs in his room talking back and forth with his agent. He returned downstairs to rousing cheers from family and guests.

“The biggest thing (I’ll remember) is walking down the stairs and seeing my name on my phone (with the news),” Slightom said. “I was still upstairs so I walked down and everyone cheered and that type of thing.”

The 6-foot-5, 215-pounder had signed with the University of Cincinnati but now will report this week to Arizona for spring training and sign with the Royals, a member of the American League’s Central Division along with the Chicago JACK SLIGHTOM White Sox. “It was exciting. I’m just really happy for him and really proud of him,” said LTHS baseball coach Kevin Diete, who attended the draft party. “It was just really cool to be part of that experience. To see him get a call and get drafted, that’s every kid’s dream. And when you get to see it come true, it’s special.”

As the Royals’ third overall selection, Slightom was projected certainly to be among the top 100 picks and as high as top 50. Diete said excitement grew as pulling up MLB.com became difficult.

“I kind of knew I was going to fit somewhere in between 30 and 65. (It was where) and what team.” Slightom said.

This past season for the Lions, Slightom was named thirdteam All-America and Class 4A first team all-state in helping the Lions shared their first West Suburban Conference Silver Division title since 2019. Slightom was 7-0 with a 0.38 earned-run average in 37.1 innings. He struck out 73 of the 130 batters he faced with seven walks.

He had a solid junior year (5-4, 3.38 ERA, 49 strikeouts in 42.2 innings) but also played other positions, including catch-

His already potent fastball also increased from 89 to 92 miles per hour and now reaches into the mid- and occasionally high-90s.

“He has a feel for his change-up, slider and command of his fastball, which is the best trait that he has,” said Royals assistant scouting director Brian Bridges.

“He really focused on improving his accuracy on off-speed pitches and both of those complement his fastball,” Diete said. “If you can throw those for strikes with a 95-mile fastball, you’re going to be tough to hit.”

Slightom gained additional poise and confidence in pressure situations from becoming the Lions’ starting quarterback this past season. Diete, also an assistant varsity football coach, said Slightom also progressed from the challenges and adversity of being the scout team quarterback his junior year.

“That was a special team (in 2024) and he experienced a lot

of failure on the scout team. I think that kind of fueled and motivated him and humbled him to get better,” Diete said. “I think he took that same attitude to baseball and got better in all aspects. (Playing both sports) helped each other out.”

The Royals drafted 21 players, 16 of them pitchers. No. 449 15th-round pick Madden Clement, a left-hander from Virginia Tech, is the son of Matt Clement, who pitched for the Chicago Cubs from 2002-04.

During one scouting trip, Bridges encountered Jim Thome, MLB Hall of Famer and father of recent Nazareth Academy graduate Landon Thome, who was selected No. 34 by the White Sox Saturday.

Slightom and Landon Thome played youth baseball together several years with Jim Thome as a coach. Bridges asked Jim Thome for thoughts on Slightom. “(Jim Thome says), ‘He’s always thrown strikes, even as a kid,’” Bridges said. “(Slightom) has an advanced feel for throwing strikes and he has such a baby face. I told him it’ll be great when you finally shave the first time you’re pitching in Kauffman Stadium (the Royals’ home ballpark).”

APPLICATION: The Zoning Board of Appeals (“ZBA”) will conduct a public hearing on an application filed by the Applicant, RZMZ Family Trust, seeking a variance from Section 9.3(L)(1)(a) of the Oak Park Zoning Ordinance, in order to build a six-foot tall closed fence in the front yard of the property located at 652 Erie Street, Oak Park, Illinois, Property Index Number 16-07-207017-0000 (“Subject Property”), in the R-1 Single-Family Residential Zoning District.

A copy of the application and applicable documents are on file and are available for inspection at Village Hall, Development Services Department, 123 Madison Street, Oak Park, Illinois 60302, Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

All interested persons will be given an opportunity to be heard at the public hearing. Interested persons may also sign up to participate in-person in the hearing to cross examine the applicant and its witnesses by submitting a cross-examination form or by emailing Zoning@oak-park.us before 5:00 PM on the day prior to the public hearing.

WHEREAS, the Board of Library Trustees of the Village of Brookfield has requested the corporate authorities of the Village of Brookfield to levy an additional tax of 0.02% for certain library purposes, pursuant to Article 3 of the Illinois Local Library Act [75 ILCS 5/1-0.1 et seq. (2016)]; and

Section 1: The corporate authorities of the Village of Brookfield herewith determine to levy an additional 0.02% tax for library purposes for the tax year commencing January 1, 2026.

Section 2: Such 0.02% additional tax shall be levied on the value of all taxable property in the Village of Brookfield, as equalized or assessed by the Department of Revenue, and shall be used for the purpose of sites and buildings, for the construction and equipment of buildings, for the rental of buildings required for library purposes, and for maintenance, repairs and alterations of library buildings and equipment.

Section 3: The levy of said additional 0.02% tax shall be effected by the adoption of an appropriate levy ordinance by the corporate authorities pursuant to statutory requirements, which ordinance shall be filed in the office of the Cook County Clerk.

Section 4: The Village Clerk is hereby authorized and directed to publish a copy of this Resolution at least once in the Riverside/Brookfield Landmark, a newspaper with a general circulation in the Village of Brookfield, within fifteen (15) days after its adoption, and also the “Public Notice” attached hereto as “Exhibit A” hereof, shall be included with such publication or posting.

Section 5: If no petition is filed with the corporate authorities of the Village of Brookfield within thirty (30) days after publication of this resolution, requesting that the question of the adoption of this resolution be submitted to the electors of the Village of Brookfield, or if all petitions so filed are determined to be invalid and insufficient, the Village shall then be authorized to levy the tax. However, if a petition is filed with the corporate authorities within said thirty (30) day period, which petition is signed by electors of the Village of Brookfield equal in number to 10% of the total number of registered voters in the Village of Brookfield and which asks that the question of levying such a 0.02% tax be submitted to the electors of the Village, then the question shall be submitted at the next applicable election, or at any special election called in accordance with law.
