River Lantern Ceremony
Commemorate the 100th anniversary of Riverside American Legion Post 488 and remember service members, family and friends at a special River Lantern Ceremony on Friday, June 14 at dusk (about 8 p.m.) in Swan Pond Park, just west of the Riverside Public Library on Burling Road. Purchase a lantern for $5, light it and place it in the Des Plaines River. The lanterns will float downstream and be retrieved by volunteers. The event was rescheduled due to poor conditions on Memorial Day weekend.
Shred-a-thon and Bike Drive
Riverside Township will host a free Shred-a-thon event from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 15 in the rear parking lot of L.J. Hauser Junior High School, 65 Woodside Ave., in Riverside, as part of Cook County Township Day. Midway Document Destruction will be onsite with a shredding truck to destroy paper documents for all residents of Riverside Township. Working Bikes will also be present to collect donations of unneeded, repairable bicycles to be redistributed locally and globally.

Get with the plan
E
very couple of years, this newspaper sends out questionnaires to candidates for local office. It’s part of the rite of passage for those seeking to be elected to posts in which they’ll set important policies for school districts, municipal governments, libraries, townships and more. In North Riverside during the past couple of go-rounds, we’ve asked candidates about their views on the need for the village to create and adopt a comprehensive plan, the type of document that can assist in guiding development and redevelopment. It’s something, obviously, that we felt was important for a prospective village official to consider, given the state of the retail sales industry these days. The response to that question was not what we’d expected. In 2017, there was outright opposition to seeking help from a group like the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP), which offers technical assistance grants to help municipalities do everything from updating their zoning codes to full-blown comprehensive planning efforts. In 2019, candidates appeared to agree some sort of look at economic development planning was a good idea, but the overall reaction to our question was pretty tepid. Earlier this year, the village of North Riverside hired a consultant to analyze the village’s prospects for economic redevelopment. Among the most important steps for the village to take? Get going on a comprehensive planning effort. This is something for which the village should seek expert help from CMAP through their Local Technical Assistance program. While the village board also created an economic development advisory committee, we don’t think that group necessarily possesses the planning expertise to lead such an effort, though members of the group could be part of a steering committee advising consultants hired in partnership with CMAP. Likewise, the village could seek assistance from CMAP in amending its zoning code to make it suitable for attracting appropriate contemporary commercial redevelopment. The two efforts would complement one another, with the zoning redo perhaps following the adoption of a comprehensive plan. If North Riverside wants an example of why such an exercise is so important, it can look to its neighbors, Brookfield and Riverside, which sought and received assistance through CMAP and continues to work with the planning agency to fine-tune it. In Riverside, those planning documents have guided decisions for making the downtown more pedestrian and visitor friendly, for greater connectivity to the river and for making the village more business and development friendly. In Brookfield, the comprehensive plan has complemented recently update zoning along the railroad tracks and is guiding the kind of transit-oriented development now occurring there. To be sure, North Riverside’s challenges are different than Riverside and Brookfield. But with the changing nature of large-scale retail, we see the potential for redevelopment — commercial and otherwise — in North Riverside to be great. But guiding principles need to be in place to ensure the redevelopment that does occur makes sense and maintains the village’s residential character while taking advantage of opportunities that could arise on the east end or at the National Guard armory. Things are changing. North Riverside needs to be able to adapt in a cohesive way.

Celebrating 50 years of Riverside history
H
ard to believe it was 50 years ago, but in the annals of Riverside 50 years is not such a long time. In this chapter of the village’s history, it is the story of the Riverside Museum. Situated in Centennial Park, the small building takes its place next to the historic water tower. When first bequeathed to the Riverside Historical Commission, it was a cold stone building, with nothing in it but with many possibilities. At the time, Herb Bassman was the commission’s first chairman. But the commission existed in name only, although it had a full list of commissioners. When Bassman and his wife moved out of town, they took with them many articles and photos which belonged to the village. However, the artifacts were retrieved and Village President Louis Komorous named Harriet Kweton -- the granddaughter of A.F. Ames (yes, the school) – chairwoman of the commission. One of the commissioners was architect Mike Wimmer, who gave his time to design the interior of the building, establishing storage spaces and a display area and making it functional.
Meanwhile, commission members took home the museum’s artifacts to begin the arduous task of cataloging and identifying photos, articles and papers. Acid-free boxes were purchased to preserve papers and photos. Securing a light fixture from the demolished Babson Estate was not easy, but it was accomplished and is now one of the collection’s most beloved artifacts. So as people assembled at Centennial Park on June 2 to celebrate the museum’s 50th anniversary, commission Chairwoman Connie Guardi unveiled a new sign, designed by architect and former commissioner Serge Ambrose, for the museum. In addition to giving those assembled a brief history lesson about the museum, the commission also recognized Deputy Fire Chief Bill Sherman for his contributions and research on Riverside history. Margaret Unger, daughter of Dorothy Unger who had been an early hard-working commissioner, was also present. Missing were former commissioners Harriet Kweton and Jim Zidlicky, but Mike Wimmer was present and smiling as he remembered the early days of the commission and the museum. I had also been one of the commissioners at that time.

Lessons learned long ago It was 1951 and I was in Mrs. Lewis’ third-grade class at Columbus School in Cicero. Our class went out for recess; it was wet and about 35 degrees. Roberta, a classmate, lost her shoe, slipped and fell into a puddle. Every time she tried to get up, three boys kept pushing her down. I, and others, watched on the fringe of the harassment. The bell rang and we all headed back to class. Roberta finally got up. Crying, with wet feet and pants and carrying her shoe, she joined the end of the line. Back in school, Roberta, sobbing, told Mrs. Lewis what happened. Livid, Mrs. Lewis asked Roberta to name the boys. She did, but included me because I was so close to the deed, though I did nothing. Mrs. Lewis made the four of us take off our shoes and socks and walk around the classroom to “see how it felt.” Still livid, Mrs. Lewis dressed us down. Because of the excitement, I said nothing. Mrs. Lewis then gave each of us a note, telling of the deed for our parents to sign and return. I was very upset for, again, I had done nothing. My father angrily asked why I would do such a thing. I replied that I was just standing very close to the deed, but I had done nothing. He admonished me to tell the truth; I said I was. Next, he called Roberta on the phone (her family and ours were friends) to settle this.
Sternly, he told her my story to be sure of the accusation. Roberta relented and said because I was so close and she was so upset, she included me in the group and did not really see me do anything. Conversation over, I felt some relief as my dad turned to me – but it wasn’t over. He was glad I told the truth, but he wanted to know why I stood there and did nothing. I shrugged with no answer. He sternly told me it was my duty to help anyone in trouble, especially a young girl, a lady or anyone else who needed help. Disappointed in me, he said he expected me to always do this in the future. I’m 75 years old and have always tried to do the best I possibly could to follow his code. I sincerely believe I have, and have passed this on to my five sons, who I know are doing this, making both of us extremely proud and knowing this code will span many generations. This changed my life and the lives of many others and others still to come. Mrs. Lewis taught all of us about the feelings of others and the repercussions of our acts, and the follow-up on discipline that is often lacking today.

Roy Farwell, 97 Butcher Roy L. Farwell, 97, of LaGrange Park and formerly of Cicero, died June 4, 2019. Born June 11, 1922, Mr. Farwell served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was employed afterward as a butcher in ROY FARWELL a grocery store. He was also a member of the Berwyn Fraternal Order of Eagles. Mr. Farwell was the husband of the late Elsie Margaret Farwell (nee Wick); the father of Deborah K. (Frank) Tallerico and Jeffrey A. (Jeanette) Farwell; the grandfather of Jeffrey (Kelly) Farwell, Matthew Tallerico, Valerie (Kosta) Antonopoulos, Meghan Farwell, Douglas (Nicole) Tallerico and Clarissa Farwell; and the great-grandfather of six. Helen Hanzlik, 94 Western Electric retiree Helen J. Hanzlik (nee Jubick), 94 a former resident of North Riverside, died June 5, 2019, at her home in Palmetto, Florida. Ms. Hanzlik was born July 5, 1924 in Lansford, Pennsylvania, and worked HELEN HANZLIK as a keypunch operator for the Western Electric Co. prior to retirement. She enjoyed knitting, reading, crossword puzzles and finance. She was preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Veronica (nee Bellas) Jubick; her siblings, Paul Jubick, Mary Jubick, Veronica McDonald and Elizabeth Shonosky; and
her husband, the late Donald G. Hanzlik Sr. Ms. Hanzlik was the mother of Donald (Judith) Jr. and the grandmother of Nicole Marie and Donna Lynn (Joshua) Higby. 3 Plants that Promote Pollinators We championed pollinators in April (“Every Day is Earth Day: Backing Our Bees�). Now, with National Pollinator Week from June 1723, it’s not too early to return to this vital and urgent topic.

Most often, when McAdam Jr. people think of pollinators, bees come to mind. That is with good reason: Bees pollinate 90% of the nation’s apple crop, for example. But various other insects, butterflies, and animals also contribute to the pollinator effort. In fact, the more types of pollinators present, the more diverse and healthy is any given ecosystem. So what can you do to contribute to the cause? That’s simple: install plants that promote pollinators! A few recommendations that are as beautiful for the landscape as they are effective at attracting pollinators: Bloomerang Lilac – Similar to other lilacs, this one blooms in the spring. However, as its name suggests, this type blooms again from late summer through fall. Pinky Winky Hydrangea – A panicle-type hydrangea, this has white and pink blooms from midsummer through the end of fall. Butterfly Bush – You guessed it ‌ a favorite of butterflies (as well as other pollinators). A range of sizes from dwarf to full-size are available. Boys hoops, girls softball make indelible mark as tight-knit, talented teams By MARTY FARMER

he Nazareth Academy football team won a state title and the girls basketball team finished third in the Class 3A playoffs. Fenwick earned its first-ever state championship in girls hockey coupled with a runner-up finish at the state finals by the boys water polo squad. Lyons Township took second and fourth in the state, respectively, in boys water polo and girls soccer. And yet, while all these teams set the standard of excellence for our local teams, I found the Riverside-Brookfield boys basketball team and girls softball team the most interesting squads to follow during the 2018-19 school year. So before we begin the offseason and its summer-filled itinerary of camps, clinics, leagues and travel teams for athletes, here’s a nostalgic look back at the best the Bulldogs had to offer this past sports year. Anybody who even casually follows area high school boys basketball knew RBHS would be good last fall. The team entered the season with talented and experienced roster of players, notably seniors Zach Vaia, Andrew Veon, Charles Terry, Reggie Loury, Patrick Hanley, Ryan Cermak and Sam Grivetti. Head coach Mike Reingruber is among the best in the business. However, an argument can be made the Bulldogs exceeded even their own expectations. RBHS turned in one of the best seasons in program history. The Bulldogs (28-5) recorded the most victories in a single regularseason with 26, won their 17th conference championship in 18 years, and won the Morton Regional and VandeMerkt Thanksgiving Classic championships. The sharp-shooting Bulldogs also made 304 three-pointers (tied for eighth in state history). RBHS routinely defeated tough opponents, including Morton, Oak Park and River Forest, Kenwood, Fenwick, Lyons

Township, Brother Rice, Marshall and Lincoln Park. Even in their 62-53 loss against Curie in the semifinals of Proviso West Sectional, the Bulldogs went out with a fight. “There is a reason why Curie is the No. 1 team in the state and one of the top teams in the country,” Reingruber said. “The season didn’t end the way we wanted, but we battled until the very end. This senior class will be missed. It’s a group of high character kids, who have worked extremely hard and given everything they have to our program. I’m honored to have had the opportunity to coach this group.” Similar to the Bulldogs’ dismissal in hoops by Curie, another nationally-ranked team was needed to upend RBHS in softball. Marist, one of the top teams in the country and fourth-place finisher in the Class 4A state playoffs, edged RBHS 1-0 in eight innings in a compelling sectional final. Prior to their postseason exit, the Bulldogs bashed opponents all spring en route to a 27-5 record, second place in the Metro Suburban Conference, and a regional cham-
pionship. Like the boys basketball team, RBHS earned notable wins over bigger schools in Oak Park and River Forest, St. Francis, Lyons Township and York. Emily Noel (.431 batting average, 12 HR, 50 RBIs), Nadia Ranieri (.516, .613 on-base percentage; 16-3, 2.43 ERA) and Isabella Garcia (.353, 6 HR, 29 RBIs) led the star-studded Bulldogs. “It was the best year I’ve had, but not just record-wise,” RBHS coach Doug Schultz said. “The girls were truly amazing. It sounds cliché, but the group worked so hard
and always wanted to improve. They weren’t satisfied with being good; they wanted to be great.” Junior Abby Favela added: “We had so many great memories this season. It felt like more than a softball team; it felt like a family. Collectively, these two entertaining Bulldog squads won 55 of 65 games and multiple championships. However, it’s the way they won: with class, chemistry, camaraderie and a fierce competitive steak, that the players and fans alike will remember most.

In general, the improvements consist of installation of permanent and temporary protective shielding, ADA ramp construction, deck joint seal replacement, various sidewalk, parapet and deck slab repairs, CSX and CTA coordination, and traffic control and protection. Bridge work will be performed in stages to maintain traffic over the bridges throughout construction. Night work is anticipated for portions of the improvement due to restrictions of lane closures on I-290.
