A meeting May 25 of the LaGrange Area chapter of the gun control group Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America was supposed to be a chance for people to get to know each other at a nice social hour at Imperial Oak Brewing in Brookfield.

But, when an 18-year-old gunman shot and killed 19 students and two teachers at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, the day before, the social hour turned into something much more serious.

Approximately 60 people, mostly women, showed up outraged by the most recent mass shooting in the United States.

“I was just happy to see the large turnout of moms who want to do something to make this stop,” said Tanja Murray of LaGrange Park, the local lead volunteer for the LaGrange Area chapter of Moms Demand Action.

Most of those in attendance May 25 were new to the group, Murray said. The attendance was about three times greater than a typical meeting.

Kristin Hassett, of Brookfield. Hassett said the shooting at Robb Elementary School in Texas prompted her to go to the meeting. She said she was overwhelmed with emotion that morning after dropping her 5-year-old at preschool and decided that she had to do something after the Texas shooting and the mass shooting at a grocery store in Buffalo a week earlier.

Moms Demand Action was founded in the wake of the 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut, in which a 20-year-old shooter killed 26 people.

The group advocates for a variety of gun control measures.

Murray said Moms Demand Action advocates for stronger background checks for gun buyers, red-flag laws to try to prevent those with mental health problems from possessing firearms, raising the age to be eligible to buy a gun and a host of other measures.

Murray said anyone can join Moms Demand Action.

“Men and women can join,” Murray said.

“One does not need to be a parent. Many people are frustrated about what’s happening. Anyone can help fight to save lives.”

Moms Demand Action and the Congregation of St. Joseph will host a vigil in memory of victims and survivors of the Uvalde and Buffalo shootings on June 3 at 4 p.m. at the Congregation of St. Joseph Chapel, 1515 W. Ogden Ave. in LaGrange Park.

BIG WEEK Pollinator garden dedication The Linda Sokol Francis Brookfield Library, 3541 Park Ave., and the Foundation for the Brookfield Library invite the community to attend an event dedicating the new pollinator garden and marking the completion of the library’s Phase II construction on June 5 at 2 p.m.

The garden was created in partnership with the Chicago Zoological Society’s Communities & Nature initiative and is part of an effort to establish a “pollinator corridor” from Brookfield to St. Louis.

Flea Market in North Riverside

Looking to clean out your closets or interested in finding some hidden treasures? You’re in luck either way when the village of North Riverside hosts a Flea Market on June 5 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lots of the Village Commons, 2401 Desplaines Ave., and police department.

Farmers markets are back!

Riverside and Brookfield welcome back their farmers markets this week, offering locally and regionally grown fruit and vegetables, eggs, meat, baked goods and specialty products as well as live entertainment, special events and more.

The Riverside Farmers Market debuts June 1 and will return each Wednesday through Oct. 5 from 2:30 to 7 p.m. in Centennial Park, at Forest Avenue and Longcommon Road.

Quarantine Quilt now part of new Field Museum collection

Permanent new home for Riverside Arts Center’s community project during lockdown

“The quilt is a beautiful representation of this mixture of resilience, hope and an expression of those things in ways that speak to the community there in Riverside,” Campbell said. “That’s what we’re trying to capture and express better [in the collection].”

The Field Museum in April launched the Pandemic Collection website at pandemiccollection.fieldmuseum.org.

Field Museum staff initiated the Pandemic Collection effort in summer 2020, when the pandemic and the fallout from the killing of George Floyd collided. As a result, the collection reflects themes of social justice as well as COVID-19 itself.

“We were grappling with how to make sense of what was going on in the world,” Campbell said. “We felt it was important to have the social justice movement reflected here in Chicago and around the world in not insignificant ways.”

It also grew from what museum staff felt was a lack of such a record from the last great pandemic, the influenza outbreak of 1918.

Trustees poised to adopt Ogden corridor master plan Energize Ogden provides officials, developers with toolkits to guide improvements

Brookfield trustees this month are poised to adopt the long-awaited Ogden Avenue corridor master plan – Energize Ogden – which has been more than a year in the making and is meant to provide local officials with a set of tools to guide redevelopment of the village’s busiest commercial district.

On May 23, planner Daniel Grove of Kimley-Horn, the consulting firm hired by the village in December 2020 to lead the effort, presented the completed Energize Ogden plan to the village board.

Elected officials are expected to adopt the plan at their meeting on June 13.

The key to the Energize Ogden plan, and one touted from the outset as the best way to guide implementation, is a “toolkit” focusing on eight area -- streetscape, site redevelopment, alleys, access management, building facades, building signage, parking lots and murals – seen as key to Ogden Avenue’s future as a vibrant commercial corridor.

“There’s unique challenges and there’s no one silver bullet that will address the corridor,” Grove told trustees at their May 23 meeting. “So we saw this as a series of smaller initiatives the village staff can work on, that individual property owners and business owners can work on over the next series of years.”

Each of the eight toolkits lays out goals and addresses how local government, private property owners, business owners and developers can partner in achieving them.

The toolkits also lay out design guidelines to ensure a cohesive look up and down the corridor, provide implementation guidance, identify potential funding sources and suggest metrics for measuring success.

For example, the streetscape toolkit lays out goals that resulted in large part from feedback from stakeholders and the public.

Streetscape beautification elements include planting trees in the public parkway, using decorative paving in highly visible areas and introducing planters and decorative street lighting.

While much of the responsibility for implementing streetscape improvements falls on local government, there is a role for developers to play.

Any private improvements made before the streetscape is fully implemented ought to follow Energize Ogden’s guidelines so they match what’s being planned. Local government can help encourage that kind of cooperation by offering incentives funded through the Ogden Avenue TIF District.

The village itself is seeking federal grant funding through the West Central Municipal Conference to help fund the larger streetscape improvements up and down Ogden Avenue. The village is on track to receive $500,000 in 2023 through the WCMC to be put toward the Illinois Department of Transportation’s Phase I engineering for Ogden Avenue resurfacing and streetscape improvements.

Phase 1 engineering will result in several alternatives for those improvements, and the village will seek input from stakeholders and the public to settle on a preferred alternative.

The village has requested another $900,000 to help fund Phase 2 engineering, but has received no word on when it might be in line to receive those funds.

It likely will take five or more years before all three phases of engineering are competed by IDOT for the Ogden Avenue corridor, which also gives the village time to work with property and business owners to solve other problems identified by the Energize

Ogden relating to parking, curb cuts, building signage, property maintenance and aesthetics.

“It’ll be a lot of incremental steps that will keep Ogden Avenue moving in a way where the vision is for a really vibrant and vital corridor for Brookfield,” Grove said.

Getting the streetscape improved is perhaps the key to the plan, even if it takes years and private property owners are reluctant to invest early on. The village’s investment, Grove said, can serve as an example.

“You want to build up that momentum, that feeling that this is a special place,” Grove said. “Having some public investment and some streetscape elements is going to help lift that up and create that feeling.

According to Grove, in other towns where Kimley-Horn has developed such plans, private investment increases after the public investment is made.

Kimley-Horn has suggested that perhaps the village could target a portion of the Ogden Avenue corridor to implement a pilot program to provide an example of what the goal is long term.

The section between Arthur and Eberly avenues might be the best place to start, the plan suggests, due to the presence of some regional/national draws, including the Galloping Ghost Arcade, Imperial Oak Brew-

ing, Skadarliya restaurant and DJ’s Scuba Locker.

Grove suggested that Galloping Ghost, which inhabits a series of rather non-descript buildings in the 9400 block of Ogden Avenue, would be a prime location for a mural that would not only beautify the corridor but make the arcade more identifiable.

“You’ve got some really cool businesses in the corridor and some amazing draws that draw people from around the world,” said Grove, who emphasized that those business owners are also heavily invested in Ogden Avenue.

“I think it’s something special here,” he added. “That’s something that can be capitalized on.”

Trustees uniformly supported the plan, especially the toolkits it contains to help guide staff and officials now and in the future.

“I’m excited for the staff, commissions and our new [economic development] commission to be able to take these pieces and work on them over time and not have it be such a big, overwhelming document, but [rather] these kind of tangible items that we can take on,” said Trustee Katie Kaluzny.

Grove said Kimley-Horn will remain involved in a consulting role and will follow up in a year to measure progress and make recommendations.

The campaign committee for Illinois state Rep. Mike Zalewski (D-Riverside) has spent $130,347.50 in legal fees to the large law firm Jones Day over the past three years, and Zalewski’s opponent in the June 28 primary says Zalewski has an obligation to explain why he needed to spend so much money on attorneys.

“He owes the voters an explanation,” said Illinois House 21st District challenger Abdelnasser Rashid, who raised the issue during a virtual candidate forum on May 18 hosted by the League of Women Voters of the LaGrange Area.

Zalewski accused Rashid of using the issue as a distraction, decrying the negative nature of Rashid’s campaign.

For his part, Zalewski questioned why Rashid’s campaign committee didn’t disclose any expenditures in its first quarter report to the Illinois Board of Elections.

“How did a campaign get started up with no expenses being paid, not even for the printer, not even for consultants, not even for attorneys, it’s mind boggling,” Zalewski said.

Rashid only established his campaign committee on March 15, the day after he filed his petitions to run against Zalewski, so the first quarter report of his campaign committee, Rashid for Illinois, only covers two weeks since the first quarter ends March 31.

His first quarter report filed with the Illinois State Board of Elections indicates that Rashid made an inkind contribution of $175 on March 15 to pay for printing petition sheets. The report states that Rashid’s campaign chairman, Clem Balanoff, also paid $1,090.07 on March 31 for a voter database which was reported as an in-kind contribution.

An examination of disclosure reports filed by Zalewski’s campaign committee, Zalewski for State Rep, reveals that Zalewski uses campaign funds to make $915.72 monthly lease payments for a Chevrolet Traverse SUV. That is legal because he uses the Traverse for his government and political work, Zalewski said.

Generally, politicians in Illinois can spend campaign contributions on anything connected to their jobs as legislators or campaigns. It is illegal for politicians to spend campaign funds for things that are exclusively for personal use.

Zalewski’s campaign committee spent $6,900.75 last October on White Sox tickets. Zalewski, who is a passionate White Sox fan, said that those tickets were used for a fundraiser.

Over the course of more than a decade, Zalewski’s campaign committee has paid the Lost Dunes Golf Club in Bridgeman, Michigan, $181,414.20. Zalewski hosts an annual golf outing there as a fundraiser.

“It’s an expensive fundraiser, but it’s also one that raises money so, yeah, it’s perfectly legal under the law,” Zalewski said.

Jones Day was the second largest recipient of funds from the Zalewski for State Rep campaign committee, trailing only the Lost Dunes Golf Club.

Daisy’s Treats and Bakery aims to keep two legacies alive

New owner takes things one slice and scoop at a time

Wendy Moore, owner of Daisy’s Treats and Bakery, 3748 Grand Blvd. in Brookfield, had built a vibrant pop-up business based on a coveted pound cake recipe and a fierce belief in herself before taking over a Brookfield ice cream shop.

Daisy’s opened quietly in the former home of Zoo City Treats in November 2021, but as the weather warms Brookfield residents are quickly discovering that much remains the same inside the ice cream parlor. More than 40 flavors of ice cream, milk shakes and banana splits remain on the menu, but Moore is bringing her own flair to the business.

The LaGrange Park resident started her bakery business out of her home when her friends urged her to start selling her mother’s favorite pound cake.

Moore learned to bake the cake by her mother’s side.

“My mom’s name was Daisy and she loved to bake. Her pound cake was always special, but after she passed away my love for it grew deeper,” said Moore. “Whenever I would make the cake, it would be gone in three minutes flat. My friends all told me I should sell it.”

She started selling pound cake and expanded her repertoire to include fruit bouquets and elaborate sweet tables.

Moore found her way to a shared commercial kitchen in Naperville that helped to carry her through her next growth phase, but after hiring her first employees it became clear that having her own space would be more profitable than paying rental fees.

Moore went looking for a brick-andmortar home for her burgeoning bakery businesses, but pandemic supply chain

issues rendered completing a custom build out financially unrealistic. Trusted advisors recommended she look to purchase a pre-existing business to cut costs.

She was on her way to see a turnkey property in faraway Highland Park when a real estate broker called to let her know Zoo City Treats was set to hit the market.

“It was straight God, seriously,” said Moore. “I don’t even know how he got my number, but I turned the car around and stopped by the shop. It was meant to be.

The icing on the cake was that ice cream was already in my business plan. I knew this place was mine the moment I saw it.”

Moore pointed out that Brookfield community members were worried the shop was going to disappear altogether, but many residents are pleased she has opted to keep it open year-round.

“Who opens an ice cream shop in November?” said Moore with a laugh, but she admits opening in the off season allowed her to get up to speed in time for summer.

In addition to serving up cups and cones, Daisy’s offers a rotation of “daily pound cake” flavors, hand dipped strawberries, custom cakes and taffy grapes.

Specialty dishes like “Daisy’s Dream Delight,” features chocolate mocha cake with vanilla ice cream and chocolate shell topping, will give even more options to ice cream lovers.

In the future Moore anticipates Daisy’s becoming a “one-stop shop” for birthday parties in Brookfield and beyond.

She dreams of Daisy’s Treats and Bakery becoming a trustworthy and well-established business in Brookfield focused on giving back to the community, but for now is focused on building relationships with her customers and creating a place young people feel comfortable visiting.

“I lived in Brookfield for six years and used to be a customer here; I could just walk over,” said Moore. “So I know this is a community of kindness. I am ready to show kindness and I am ready to receive it, too.”

Start your summer enjoying art in Brookfield 2022 Art Walk will take place on Broadway Avenue on June 4

When people think about Brookfield, the top things most likely coming to mind are a world-class zoo, woodsy bike trail, touch-andgo Eight Corners intersection, the nation’s largest video arcade and even the burgeoning dining scene.

But for one group of residents, the hope is that Brookfield can soon grow to be recognized as an artistic and creative suburbs.

In October 2019, The Compassion Factory Art Gallery and Studio launched the inaugural Brookfield Art Walk, dedicated to showcasing the local art scene. Featuring Brookfield businesses and artists, the premiere event was developed with the purpose of transforming Brookfield into a destination for public art.

Though the COVID pandemic put a halt to a 2020 event, the art walk returned last September, with the same goal of delivering art and music into the public sphere in a vibrant, neighborly format.

However, with The Compassion Factory opting out of coordinating an art walk for 2022, Brookfield residents Shannon Gosciejew and Terri Angarone — two artists involved with the gallery — stepped up to organize a summer kickoff art walk for Saturday, June 4.

From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. along the Broadway Avenue business corridor, the 2022 Brookfield Art Walk will feature work from 30 artists of all ages, from teens to seniors, from Brookfield and the surrounding suburbs.

With art including paintings, photography, stained glass, jewelry, sculpture, woodwork, live poetry creation, home decor crafts and more, Gosciejew says visitors can tap into an afternoon of creative energy.

Gosciejew and Angarone, who were involved in coordinating the 2021 event and had their own artist booths, belong to the newly formed Brookfield Art Collective, which aims to make space for local artists

and foster collaboration between artists in the Brookfield area.

“Chicago is known for being an art-friendly and vibrant city, with each neighborhood having its own flavor — why can’t the ‘burbs?” Gosciejew said. “Berwyn, Riverside, Oak Park, Forest Park and LaGrange all have a thriving art scene. I want the town I live in to have that, too.”

Along with art, the walk will also feature music, with A Sound Education offering free, 10-minute mini lessons; music from area bands Falling Stars (10 a.m.-noon) and The Chicago Swing Project (1-3 p.m.); and drinks and snacks from BuckleDown Brewing and The Chicago Donut Company.

Sponsors for the event include The Compassion Factory, A Sound Education, Floss & Company and Anderson Music Studio.

For Angarone, continuing the Brookfield Art Walk means taking seriously the objective of bringing residents of all ages together to enjoy a variety of art, all while creating an outlet for conversation.

“I love art that makes you think and maybe can change your perspective a little bit,” she said.

Personally for Angarone, the pandemic was an especially pivotal moment in her goal of striving to showcase the importance of incorporating art into community spaces.

“I think people needed the feeling that they were not alone — not only the isolation, but everything else in people’s lives that were affected,” she said. “Art really can really bring out voices in people and help them, including me, to articulate that voice. And, the art walk is a quirky fun time I think describes Brookfield to a T. I hope Brookfield never changes its quirkiness.”

Gosciejew hopes both visitors of the past art walks and new visitors are able to experience a spirited artistic atmosphere and witness the creative diversity of Brookfield.

“I think we all have learned that we need more than food and water to exist. Art feeds your soul and shows you the world differently,” she said. “You only have one life, but with art, you can experience the vision and stories of others’ lives and enjoy this life more fully.”

million of the total $22.7 billion settlement. Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul announced in February that municipalities would start receiving funds in the second quarter of 2022.

D

uring those uncertain, difficult early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, businesses and organizations scrambled to find innovative ways to stay connected to the wider community.

In the case of the Riverside Arts Center, whose very existence thrives on personal connection in the form of gallery exhibitions and art classes for all ages, it meant bringing art to people shut up in their homes.

They did it with a combination of special art kits that could be delivered or picked up in a contact-less way, staging gallery exhibitions that could be experienced without ever setting foot in the gallery itself and by calling on the community to document the pandemic’s impact by creating a Community Quarantine Quilt.

In one way, it was a simple way to engage with people looking for an artistic outlet, and the thought of a quilt – with its homey, comforting symbolism – was a suitable concept.

It cost almost nothing, monetarily, to produce – with RAC delivering squares of muslin and scraps of fabric to contributors who transformed them into personal expressions of hope, thanks and of the importance of the natural world, family and community.

While the quilt was displayed at the Riverside Township Hall, its future was up in the air. At first, RAC officials believed it might be useful as part of a fundraising effort, but a silent auction of the quilt failed to draw a single bid.

At the same time, the Field Museum was in the process of putting together a Pandemic Collection to document this historic international moment – in contrast to what hadn’t been done a century earlier in the wake of the last great international pandemic.

A chance conversation between Liz Chilsen, the RAC executive director, and an artist friend about the Field’s new effort was kismet. Chilsen reached out and within a few months the quilt was on its way to be a permanent part of the Field Museum Pandemic Collection.

Art can have such an impact, but we don’t often give it its due. For a town as small as Riverside to have an arts center that offers high-quality public, free exhibitions and maintains an art school is kind of remarkable.

Brookfield has a newer but no less ambitious gallery and studio – Compassion Factory – as well, and you can pay it a visit during the 2022 Brookfield Art Walk in the Eight Corners business district on June 4.

The following weekend, you can head back into downtown Riverside to give RAC a look while also taking in the “spectacle” and enjoying some performances at the downtown train station during a modified Riverside Arts Weekend on June 11-12.

Our small towns have a lot of art to offer, and we can’t think of another time in recent memory when we’ve needed it more.

Remembering a true son of Riverside

I

t was a lengthy obituary, one that was warranted, in last week’s Landmark regarding the late Anthony “Tony” Bednarz, who passed away May 21.

Attending his funeral Mass at St. Mary Church, where Tony had been a lifelong member, I started to recall how I knew Tony. Looking around at those assembled, it occurred to me I probably knew him longer than anyone in attendance.

Tony and I had gone to school at St. Mary’s since first grade. We were together in the same class all eight years. I have a class picture which shows us in third grade, sitting at our desks. That is how the pictures were taken back then.

We didn’t wear uniforms but we were all dressed in a way that would make all grandparents proud, boys with nice shirts, some wore ties, and girls in nice dresses. There were over 30 students in the picture.

What was amusing to me was that none of us were smiling -- serious faces and hands folded on the desk. Everyone was friends with each other and I don’t remember any bullying.

When we made our communion and confirmation, Tony’s mother, Florentine, was in charge of purchasing religious articles for making our sacraments.

As we grew up our paths would cross. I had met his

future wife, Marianne, before she married Tony when she was on a college search and was looking at Marymount College in Salina, Kansas, where I was a student. So it was nice when we became reacquainted when she married Tony.

Tony was always close with his family, and if you wanted to see him you went to Bednarz Ace Hardware on East Burlington Street. You would find him working along with his father, also Anthony, his mom Florentine, his brother Paul and, if you were lucky, his grandmother, Jennie Doman. They knew their stuff, and don’t we all wish we still had the hardware store?

When it came to running the fire department, they could not have picked a better person. Tony knew his job and worked to make it topnotch. I remember being called to a meeting to discuss Riverside getting an ambulance. At the time, they had been using a station wagon to transport patients to the hospital.

Tony had called a number of people to plead the case for an ambulance. Tony had his facts and Riverside got its ambulance. Looking around the church and seeing Tony’s family, it was clear Riverside meant a lot to him and he meant a lot to Riverside.

Thanks, Tony, glad to have known you all these years.

What is wrong with Americans?

A few years back my husband and I were on a group tour throughout Italy. One night an Australian woman looked at her phone and told the group of a mass shooting at a concert in Las Vegas. She looked at us and said, “What is wrong with Americans?”

After the school shooting in Texas followed so soon after the grocery store shooting in Buffalo, the answer to that question has several parts. What is wrong with the Republican senators who refuse to vote for commonsense gun legislation over 20 times in the 10 years since Sandy Hook? They claim to be pro-life, yet they

continue to let anyone buy assault weapons that have only one purpose.

What is wrong with the Texas legislature and Gov. Abbott who recently passed legislation that allows anyone to carry any type of gun anywhere with no license?

What was wrong with President Bush who, in 2004, let the assault weapons ban expire without even a mention of whether or not it should continue?

Finally what is wrong with the millions of Americans who continue to vote for these Republicans who allow these types of weapons to be legal? Is a lower tax bill worth the deaths of innocent American children?

What is wrong with our health care system that does not provide the mental health help to people who need it?

President Johnson used threats, intimidation and blackmail in order to get three civil rights bills passed.

Maybe it is time for President Biden to do the same.

OBITUARIES

Lawrence T. Ketchmark, 93 Navy, Army vet owned hardware stores Lawrence T. Ketchmark, 93, a resident of Brookfield for 70 years who owned hardware stores near Eight Corners and on Ogden Avenue for more than two decades, died May 31, 2022.

Mr. Ketchmark grew up on the North Side of Chicago and graduated from Lane Tech High School in 1947. Two months after graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as ship’s cook until 1950.

He returned home, got married and in 1951 enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving as a medic in Korea during the Korean War until the end of 1952.

“To the day he died, he was extremely proud to have served in the Armed Forces,” said his son, Kit Ketchmark, who is a Brookfield trustee and past village president. Mr. Ketchmark will be inurned at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood with full military honors.

Mr. Ketchmark and his father, who already lived across the street from Ehlert Park, in 1952 purchased the two southernmost lots on the east side of the 4200 block of Oak Avenue and built new two-bedroom homes there.

He and his wife, the late Doris Ketchmark, would raise five children there. Mr. Ketchmark lived at the home until his death, hosting garage sales regularly and playing the accordion outside after dinner on the weekends.

LAWRENCE T. KETCHMARK He opened his first hardware store in Montgomery and operated it for 25 years before moving Service Hardware to a storefront at the corner of Monroe and Park avenues at the edge of the Eight Corner business district.

After about 10 years, Mr. Ketchmark moved the hardware store to Ogden Avenue, renaming it Ogden Avenue Hardware, and operating it there in two locations for another 15 years before retiring.

He was an avid flea market negotiator and enjoyed following local politics.

“He was a wheeler-dealer,” Kit Ketchmark said. “It was the social aspect of flea markets. He was a salesman and loved talking to people.”

Mr. Ketchmark was the husband of the late Doris B. Ketchmark (nee Vizek); the father of Robin (Patricia) Ketchmark, Dana (Susan) Ketchmark, Kit (Kathy) Ketchmark and Susan (Steve) Huska and late Timothy (Cindy) Ketchmark; the grandfather of Tony (Melanie) Ketchmark, Spencer Ketchmark, Tiffany Ketchmark, Jason Ketchmark, Jenny (Aaron) Tag, Katie (Anthony) Gaudio, Cameron Ketchmark, Trent Ketchmark, Justin Huska, Jessica (Tony) Broches and Michael Huska; the great grandfather of Evan Tag, Asher Tag, Weston Gaudio, Ryker Gaudio, Loukas Broches, Ella Broches, Aedan Ketchmark, Sabrina Ketchmark, Elliot Ketchmark, Amelia Ketchmark and Emerson Ketchmark; and the brother of George (Shirley) Ketchmark, Justine (the late Edward) Handing, Jim (Annette) Ketchmark and the late Ruth Milner.

outdoor winter gathering during the depths of Covid in 2021, my neighbor Peter and I decided to buy a van to do mobile repairs and try and bring the bike shop to the people.”

“First,” Peter adds “we discovered that there a lot of old Schwinns out there that need a lot of love, and secondly we discovered couldn’t keep up with demand repairing bikes one house at a time, mainly because the customer would produce two or three more bikes per visit, as if almost by magic!

Paul continues “Again, we found ourselves asking ‘So, how does this whole thing work’. Quickly our business evolved into ‘rounding-up’ bikes, repairing them, and then dropping them off again. Turns out that was the real barrier, getting the whole family’s bikes in the into the shop, or a heavy tandem or e-bike.”

“We’ve only been in business for little more than a year but we recently moved into the historic Riverside train station as our base of operations.” Peter says “Soon we’ll be offering rentals and hosting social rides and events from there. You can still get your bike picked up and repaired by texting 636-BIKEFIX.” “However, we still don’t sell bikes. Paul says “There are a lot of good bikes out in the world that just need some love. Maybe after the last Schwinn Varsity turns to dust…maybe then.”

RBHS wins first regional baseball crown since 2014 Murphy fans 14, allows one hit to pace No. 3-seeded Bulldogs

On May 27, Owen Murphy, Sean McDermott and the rest of the seniors on the Riverside-Brookfield High School baseball team graduated from high school. But their work for RBHS was not done.

Just about 15 hours after being handed their diplomas in the RBHS gymnasium, Murphy and McDermott led the Bulldogs to their first baseball IHSA regional championship since 2014 as Murphy tossed a one-hit shutout to defeat host Whitney Young 3-0.

The regional championship was a big team goal after coming so close last year, t losing 2-1 to Benet in the regional championship game.

“It feels amazing,” McDermott said. “Last year was a bummer against Benet and finally we were able to battle it back and get a title under our belt. It really feels good.”

The Bulldogs (30-5) grabbed the lead in the first inning. Murphy lashed a double to the left center field fence with one out. Then Young shortstop Luke Yolich ranged far to his left to rob Cooper Marrs of a hit for the second out as Murphy advanced to third.

That brought cleanup hitter McDermott to the plate with two outs. McDermott is not your prototypical cleanup hitter preferring contact over power. McDermott was looking for a fastball, and he got one on the first pitch from Young pitcher Joshua Schmidt. He pounced on it and muscled it into center field for a single to drive in Murphy.

“I really wanted to get a fastball right in the zone and as soon as I saw it, I took it and drove it where it came from,” McDermott said.

The Bulldogs scored two more runs in the second inning.

Rex Dockendorf led off the second with a single. Then Jake Tyler was hit by a pitch.

Slugging catcher Brian Twomey surprised the Dolphins with a bunt and beat it out for a hit to load the bases.

Connor Chapulis was hit by a pitch to drive in Dockendorf. Then Luke Yachin drove in Tyler when he laced what looked like to a sharp line drive single to center. The Young centerfielder alertly turned it into a fielder’s choice by throwing to third for a force out but the run still scored.

Three runs were more than enough with Murphy, who has only allowed two runs (and just one earned run) all season, on the mound.

“Having Owen on the mound is everything,” McDermott said. “When we play, when we know Owen’s on the mound all we need is one, two runs and we feel comfortable.”

Murphy (8-0) cruised the rest of the way, allowing only two more baserunners and recording his first 10 outs on strikeouts. In the fourth inning Murphy make a throwing error on a two-out tapper in front of the plate to allow a runner to reach second.

Young’s other baserunner came with one out in the seventh when Yolich broke up the no-hitter with a solid single to right off a curve ball. But Murphy wasn’t fazed. He got a pop out to short and then fanned the next hitter on a fastball to end the game. Murphy

struck out 14 for the game.

“My fastball was working pretty well,” Murphy said. “I was feeling my cutter and my changeup pretty well too, my breaking ball left me sometimes but I got it back and everything just felt good.”

The Bulldogs, who are seeded third in the IHSA Reavis Sectional, will face second seeded Mount Carmel in a sectional semifinal on June 2 at 4:30 p.m. at Reavis.

RBHS coach Dallas Till said Saturday that he is not yet sure if Owen Murphy will start that game.

“He could go if he wants to, but I’m going to kind of let him soak this in and see how he feels, how sore he is, that type of thing,” Till said.

Bats power Lions past St. Rita to win regional Lyons Township High School senior first baseman Cooper Ohlson brought extra energy and chatter to the May 28 IHSA Class 4A St. Rita Regional final against the host Mustangs.

Ohlson, who played for St. Rita baseball as a freshman, only got louder as the Lions trailed by four runs after four innings.

“I was excited to play them. [But] we

started off slow,” Ohlson said. “I just thought our season wasn’t done yet and just spark the fire within and get the team rolling.”

The Lions responded with their best offensive inning of the season – an eightrun fifth– and rallied for a 12-7 victory and their first regional title since 2014.

The No. 4-seeded Lions (18-14) meet top-

seeded Brother Rice in the Reavis Sectional semifinals at 4:30 p.m. on June 1.

The Lions lost to Oak Lawn in last season’s regional semifinals. The 2017-19 teams were conference champions, but they lost regional finals to St. Rita twice and Mt. Carmel.

“We wanted to change that. We wanted to be the first ones to win it, at least for [LTHS

coach Kevin Diete],” senior catcher Jack McNamara said. “This is one of the top [victories], for sure, such a great team win.”

Ohlson transferred to LTHS and was eligible for the 2020 season, but that was cancelled by the COVID-19 pandemic. On May 28, his fourth-inning home run cut the deficit to 7-3.

Back from injury, senior sparks RBHS softball Hannah Organ blasts 3-run homer, keeps Willowbrook hitters at bay

At times, injured Riverside-Brookfield High School senior Hannah Organ may have thought her softball season may be over.

Her leadership along with some talented younger teammates made her final home game on May 28 a memorable one.

Organ’s three-run homer in the top of the sixth inning broke open a tie game and propelled the Bulldogs to a 7-1 victory over Downers Grove South to win an IHSA Class 4A Regional title at Veterans Park in North Riverside.

“I don’t think a hit has ever felt better in my four years here at RB,” said Organ, who followed sophomore sister Emily Organ’s single and junior Lianna Noel reaching on a dropped third strike.

“I don’t think I’ve ever had a better hit than that, a better feeling,” she said. “It

was honestly just so much fun.”

The fifth-seeded Bulldogs (14-10) won their third straight regional title, two of them in Class 4A, to advance to the May 31 Marist Sectional semifinal, after the Landmark’s press time, against the top-seeded host RedHawks.

“They executed our plan perfectly. They kept high energy, did all of the things we asked and they carried through,” RBHS coach Doug Schultz said.

RBHS trailed the No. 4 Mustangs but tied the game 1-1 in the fourth. Hannah Organ added an RBI single in the seventh after senior Danika Apostolovich singled and sophomore Julia Madera walked.

Hannah Organ, part of the last three regional titles, was 2-for-4 with four runs batted in and pitched the final 5.2 innings in relief of starter Ellery Hastings.

Freshman Ellie Megall, sophomore Zoe Levine and Noel also singled.

“I think definitely our energy [helped

us]. That was a big part,” said Megall, the Bulldogs’ starting third baseman.

“I think just having so many leaders on the team [has helped], even underclassmen, just bringing everyone together and keeping us all focused and positive through games.”

Hannah Organ rejoining the lineup also has been a huge lift. She injured her left knee in the second game of the season March 17 and missed several games.

“I didn’t really know if I was going to be able to play in [the regional final],” Organ said. “Being my last year, to still be able to go out there and help the team was really special and just really fun.”

Along with the 7-1 regional semifinal victory over Argo on May 24, RBHS has scored at least seven runs in 14 games, 12 of them victories. Emily Organ (RBI) was 2-for-4 and Hannah Organ (2 RBIs) and Megall singled.

Troy Stukenberg (3-for-4) hit a two-run double to close to 7-6. Ohlson’s single tied the game and Jack Falls’ two-run single put LTHS ahead 9-7.

Greifenkamp came to bat a second time and delivered a two-run single.

“That was probably the most explosive inning we’ve had all year,” Stukenberg said.

Defensively, reliever Adam Severson allowed just one run over the final 4.2 innings.

“I don’t think we’ve had many (innings) like that so I’d say it’s our best of the season,” Diete said. “We’ve been down before and always been trying to tell them keep battling back.”

Luke Stockbridge threw a five-inning onehitter in LTHS’ 12-0 regional semifinal victory over Kelly with 11 strikeouts and one walk.

Breen hit a two-run homer. McNamara (3-for4, 4 RBIs) had two doubles and Greifenkamp (3 RBIs) and Frederick Ragsdale III were 2 for 2 with triples.
