The resource is anonymous, so student’s concerns about their identity are not a barrier to reaching out. Compassion Factory Art Gallery and Studio, 9210 Broadway Ave. in Brookfield, in conjunction with the Brookfield Women’s Club, presents an exhibit of photos celebrating Brookfield in honor of last year’s 125th anniversary of the village’s incorporation. The special exhibit, on display through May 27, features photos taken by community residents throughout 2018 and are grouped to highlight holiday celebrations, like July 4 and the Christmas holidays; special events, like the farmers market; and organizations, like Little League. Walking tour of Riverside The Frederick Law Olmsted Society kicks off its 2019 series of docent-led walking tours of Riverside on Sunday, May 26 from 2 to 4 p.m. On this date, enjoy a guided tour of the village north of the BNSF Railroad tracks. LTHS, LaGrange Legion mark Memorial Day
The Robert E. Coulter Jr. American Legion Post 1941, of LaGrange, which celebrates its 75th anniversary this year, and Lyons Township High School will mark Memorial Day on Monday, May 27 with a pair of ceremonies. The day begins at 8:30 a.m. at the high school’s North Campus, 100 S. Brainard Ave., with an honor roll call of LaGrange residents who have died while serving the nation, a 21-gun salute and the playing of “Taps” at the flagpole. American Legion Post 1941 will celebrate its anniversary at its headquarters, 900 S. LaGrange Road, at noon. The ceremony will recount the story of Robert E. Coulter Jr., an LTHS graduate who was killed while piloting a B17 bomber in action over the Mediterranean Theater of Operations in 1943. The ceremonies are open to the public.

Lions second, Friars third at water polo state finals Both teams fall to eventual state champ Naperville Central

side from being perennial contenders to win a state championship, the Lyons Township and Fenwick High School boys water polo teams share another commonality, at least based on their collective experience over the weekend. Neither team is a big fan of Naperville Central. While the Lions and Friars respect the Redhawks, the latter defeated both en route to their second straight state championship on Saturday, May 18 at Stevenson High School.
LTHS The Lions fell behind Naperville Central early en route to an 8-5 loss in the IHSA state finals. LTHS trailed 3-0 after one period and 6-1 after three, while struggling to solve the Redhawks’ stout defense. In the fourth, the Lions outscored Naperville Central 4-2 but ultimately fell short in their comeback attempt. “I thought it was important for us to score early in the game to gain the momentum,” LTHS coach Doug Eichstaedt said. “Naperville Central has really strong field players in front of a very talented goalie. They make it very difficult to score. “We made some adjustments and the players started to execute our offensive game plan more effectively. The game was for the state championship so our players were never giving up. They worked too hard to not give their all at the end.” Senior star Victor Perez led LTHS with a match-high three goals, while Bobby Bolan and Liam Malas scored a goal each. Goalie Ray Berg finished with 10 saves. Luke-Klein Collins, Bender Russo and Brad Sanford paced Naperville Central with two goals apiece. Sanford and Klein-Collins dished out three and two assists, respectively. The Lions (30-5) edged Lincoln-Way East (12-11) in a see-saw battle in the semifinals. Bolan (5 goals, 4 assists), Perez (3 goals) and Ethan Wright (2 goals) powered the offense, while Berg tallied 10 saves in the cage. LTHS only loses six players (notably Perez and Berg) to graduation. Bolan, Malas, Wright, Martin Brown, Eric Markey and Sebastian Perez return next season to lead an experienced group who should be one of the top teams in the state. “Every year creates opportunities for oth-

er players to step up into different roles,” Eichstaedt said. “We have a strong core group of varsity players returning and a very successful [frosh/soph] group that will compete for playing time. I am excited to see the development over the next 12 months.”
Fenwick The Friars strive to win their last match every season. With 20 state championships in the school’s trophy cases, the perennial focus is to be the best. Although Fenwick won its last game this spring, the 17-11 victory over Lincoln-Way East unfortunately occurred in the thirdplace game of the state finals.
“We set out to win the state championship and fell short of our goal,” Fenwick coach Kyle Perry said. “Not achieving a goal is disappointing, but I would not want any other goal than the one we set four years ago. Only two teams win their final game of the season and we made sure that we were one of those two teams.” Naperville Central was the other team to claim a final victory, the aforementioned 8-5 victory over Lyons Township in the state final. The Redhawks derailed the Friars’ run with a 10-6 win in the semifinals. “Despite the disappointing finish, I think the team has a lot to be proud of,” said Fenwick senior Nate Fisher, who will play water polo at Occidental College in Los Ange-
les. “For us seniors to leave without every bringing a state championship trophy home is tough, but we also know that we finished with our best season. We are leaving Fenwick water polo in a good place and in good hands.” Fenwick (32-4) finished the season on a positive note against Lincoln-Way East. The Friars jumped on the Griffins early in the first quarter, leading 5-0 after the opening 10 minutes. Fenwick led 9-3 at halftime and cruised to victory the rest of the way. Navy-bound Payton Comstock and Alex Figus went out in style as both players had four goals and an assist. Fisher (2 goals, 4 assists), senior Ramses Flores (goal, 4 assists), and junior Dan Bajda (3 goals, assist) also played well for the victors. “In each of the last three seasons, we’ve been one of the top teams in Illinois,” Perry said. “These seniors did not believe what anyone else was telling them about how Fenwick would never return to top form. They took that criticism as a challenge and have made me very proud with the mark they have left on our aquatics program.”

The high school state baseball playoffs begin this week with several area teams boasting both the talent and resume to make a deep postseason run. Here’s a preview of how Riverside-Brookfield, Nazareth Academy, Lyons Township and Fenwick measure up against the competition in Class 4A. With multiple players assuming larger roles this spring, RBHS turned in a terrific regular-season campaign. The Bulldogs finished 20-8 overall with an 8-4 record and secondplace showing in the Metro Suburban Conference. “We are playing better as the season has progressed,” RBHS assistant coach Mark Ruge said. “We’ve been able to insert younger guys in high pressure situations which will help us going forward into next season. In the playoffs, we need to play loose and slow the game down. It’s about trusting the work we have put in and attacking each at bat and inning one at a time.” Junior Nate Swanson (6-1) and senior Nate Roberto (6-2) anchor the pitching staff. Freshman shortstop Owen Murphy and junior catcher Mike Schicker, who are cousins, lead RBHS offensively. Murphy is hitting .413 with three home runs and 22 RBIs, while Schicker has produced comparable numbers at .385 with three homers and 29 RBIs. Juniors Marco Ruiz (.362, 16 RBIs) and Joe Kawiecki (.329, 22 RBIs) have been top
contributors as well. The Bulldogs are the No. 8 seed in the stacked St. Rita Sectional. The host Mustangs, Nazareth, Brother Rice, LTHS and Mount Carmel represent the top five seeds, respectively, and are all state title contenders. RBHS faces regional host Morton on Thursday, May 23 (4:30 p.m.). If the Bulldogs win, they will likely face St. Rita in the regional championship game on Saturday, May 25 (11 a.m.). Led by 6-foot-4 pitcher/Louisville recruit Michael Prosecky and senior catcher Andrew McKenna, Nazareth has plenty of pitching and offense to enjoy a lengthy stay in the 4A draw. Teddy Olander, Zach Carmignani, Brevin Reifsteck, Michael Milano and Cole Vercelli are other notable players. The regional host Roadrunners face the winner of Curie vs. Kennedy in a semifinal Wednesday, May 22 at 4 p.m. With a victory, Nazareth advances to the championship game against either St. Ignatius or Reavis on Saturday, May 25 at 11 a.m. in LaGrange Park. Lyons Township has some of the most enviable pitching depth in the state. The Lions feature Illinois-bound ace Grant Leader, Michael Walsh, Eric Steensma, Andrew Garland. Brendan Lawry and James Severson. Additionally, Thomas Remijas and Danny Machaj power a solid offense. The Lions landed in a tricky regional at Mount Carmel. While they should win their opener against the winner of Argo/Proviso East, the host Caravan likely await LTHS in

Riverside-Brookfield High School softball coach Doug Schultz stressed the importance of mental toughness to his players this season. The Bulldogs took the message to heart with a 24-4 regular-season record, highlighted by a 9-3 runner-up finish in the Metro Suburban Conference. “I’m very pleased with the regular season,” Schultz said. “Our conference schedule was much more challenging and we still finished well. I believe this experience will prepare us for the state tournament. If we don’t look ahead and assume an early round win, we should do fine.” Led by Emily Noel, Ashley Lynch and Isabella Garcia (among several sweet-swinging others), the Bulldogs score runs in bunches. RBHS scored double-digit in runs in 14 games, highlighted by 20 runs on four occasions.
