mployers may apply the federal tip credit provisions only to employees who qualify as tipped employees. The FLSA defines a tipped employee as an employee who customarily and regularly receives more than $30 per month in tips. Typically, this includes employees like servers, bartenders, and bussers. For the tip credit to apply, the employer must pay a cash wage of at least $2.13 per hour and the employee must be allowed to retain all tips received except for those tips subject to a valid tip pool. In addition, the employer must give tipped employees notice of application of the tip credit. While this notice can be verbal, employers may want to put the notice in writing and have tipped employees provide a signed acknowledgment that they received such notice. A valid tip pool involves the sharing of tips received from customers between and among tipped employees. For example, in a tip pool, a server may share a portion of the tips he or

she received during a shift with the busser who was assigned to bus and clean his or her tables and the bartender who made the drinks for the serverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s customers. A tip pool that includes paying a portion of tips to nontipped employees-like cooks and dishwashers typically will not qualify as a valid tip pool. Many states have their own wage and hour laws that include tip credit provisions that differ from those in the FLSA.. These state requirements could include mandating a higher cash wage component or prohibiting use of a tip credit altogether.

They may assess a loss-of-use fee for each day the car is unusable, as well as charge you because the value of the car has decreased. Not all insurance policies cover these fees. One potential benefit of rental car insurance—and most people are not aware of this—is that, in the off-chance there’s a claim, it won’t go against your policy (and potentially trigger a premium increase). Most travelers, upon hearing that question at the rental car counter, have the vague notion that they don’t really need to buy rental car insurance—which is somehow covered already. But with just enough uncertainty, some purchase it just to be safe. So, Do You Need Rental Car Insurance or Not?

Truth be told, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer. However, you can likely reach a conclusion you’re comfortable with by considering the following: Know Your Personal Auto Policy

Because insurance policies vary, it’s a good idea to call your agent before you rent a car to make sure you have the coverage you need. In many instances, your personal auto policy will provide coverage for a rental car—but that may be limited to the coverages you have on your own car, not adjusted for the rental. Of course, if you don’t have a personal auto policy, you’ll need to purchase coverage from the rental company!

Most credit cards will also provide some coverage, but payment is often limited to reimbursement of your personal auto policy deductible (after that policy pays for repairs). Generally, loss-of-use and other fees are not covered, but it’s important to check with your credit card provider to determine their policies. And while some cards may offer additional protection for a fee, coverage is usually limited to damage to the car, not liability for any injuries to others. Remember, to receive any sort of benefit from your card, you must use that card to pay for your entire car rental. Consider Any Unique Circumstances

Are you renting a car in a foreign country, or for more than a week? You’ll definitely want to get confirmation of coverage from both your insurance carrier and credit card company because different rules might apply. Also, no matter where you are, vehicles such as trucks, RVs, or exotic sports cars aren’t covered under standard agreements. And if you’re using a car for business purposes, your personal coverage might not apply. Finally, if multiple people will be driving the car during your trip, make sure your coverages will apply to them.

Understanding Rental Car Coverage Rental companies offer four main types of coverage: A Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) relieves you of responsibility if your rental car is damaged or stolen. This may also provide coverage for loss of use. Liability Protection provides protection from lawsuits if you are sued after an accident. Personal Accident Insurance covers you and passengers for medical bills after an accident. You may not need this if you have adequate health and auto coverage. Personal Effects Coverage protects you if items are stolen from your car. You’re generally covered for this under your homeowners or renters policy—but keep in mind that the loss must exceed your deductible for you to receive payment. If you have a high deductible, it may make sense to purchase this coverage from the rental company. Vacation is not the time to stress out about insurance. So before your next trip, be sure to verify coverage with your agent and credit card company. That way you’ll be ready to make an informed decision when you get to the rental car counter. RBHS volleyball ready for state playoffs Winning Willowbrook Invite indicates Bulldogs are peaking at the right time

he fourth time was the charm for the Riverside-Brookfield High School boys volleyball team. After a pair of runner-up finishes and a fourth-place showing at tournaments earlier this season, the Bulldogs finally went all the way by winning the Willowbrook Invite on May 11. RBHS reeled off five straight victories to claim the Willowbrook title. “We felt like we weren’t playing to our full potential the past few weeks so winning the Willowbrook title definitely boosted our confidence,” said senior DJ Dergand who has 204 kills and 115 digs this season. “I think we’re back on the same path we were on at the beginning of the season. We brought a lot more energy at Willowbrook, and much of that energy came from our bench players who helped pump up the starters and keep us focused. Our drive to win increased tremendously.” After notching relatively comfortable wins against Addison Trail, Schaumburg and York in pool play and the quarterfinals, RBHS faced pair of stern tests the rest of the way. In the semifinals, RBHS earned a 22-25, 2516, 25-20 comeback win over Joliet Catholic. The Bulldogs parlayed that momentum into the final, defeating Hinsdale Central 25-21, 25-20. “We played with incredible energy through the weekend, but particularly in our three Saturday matchups that culminated with a great performance in the championship game against our rival Hinsdale Central,” RBHS coach Dan Bonarigo said. “The outcome was in question as we trailed by four or five points early in both games to Hinsdale Central, but we have shown incredible resilience and an ability to come back from early deficits.” In the championship match, the Bulldogs’ Vejas Cuplinskas led offensively with nine kills. Degand and Colby Campbell, who have committed to play college volleyball at Missouri Baptist and Millikin, respectively, contributed four kills apiece. Campbell also shut down the Red Devils’ hitters with five blocks, while teammates Matt Hansen (4 blocks) and Matt Lams (3 blocks, 4 digs) also provided resistance at the net. Jonah Raith (19 assists, 4 digs) and Lucas Reilley (7 digs) also played key roles for the victors. “I believe that our team is getting better every week,” Lams said. “We still have

things to work on because we are never satisfied. We know that there is always something that can be improved about our game.” Cuplinskas, who has a team-high 259 kills this season, echoed Lams’ sentiments. “I think our team is doing really well so far, but we can still do better,” he said. “We don’t care who we play because we always believe ourselves to be the better team. As we like to say, ‘We like us.’” RBHS (25-8, 5-2 Metro Suburban Conference) will finish second in conference behind St. Francis, which finished 8-0 in league play. The Spartans swept the Bulldogs in two meetings, the latest a 25-23, 26-28, 25-20 victory in Riverside on May 8. Cuplinskas (21 kills) and Raith (38 assists) set school records for most kills and assists, respectively, in one match. Fresh off another excellent regular season, RBHS has landed as the No. 4 seed in the Hinsdale South Sectional. St. Francis is the top seed, followed by Neuqua Valley, West Aurora, RBHS and Lyons Township. “We are very pleased to earn such a high seed in a very competitive sectional,” Bonarigo said. “We are also excited to be hosting a regional as a top seed, but we will have to contend with very competitive

teams, namely LT to win the regional championship. We hope to win the regional and then have another chance at St. Francis.” The Bulldogs open the postseason at home against Proviso East on Monday, May 20. The quarterfinals match starts at 4:30 p.m. The Riverside-Brookfield Regional final will be played on Wednesday, May 22 at 6 p.m.

“Hosting a regional is an awesome experience,” Campbell said. “Not many players get a chance to bring the playoffs to their home court so we want to make the best of this opportunity. There was a lot of sweat and hard work to earn the fourth seed. It’s not easy to earn that out of 29 teams, but we have all pushed each other to our fullest potential.”

The Lyons Township High School boys gymnastics teams placed fourth with a score of 156.05 at the state finals, hosted by Hoffman Estates on Saturday, May 11. Libertyville won the state title with a score of 159.15, followed by Niles West (158.65) and Glenbrook North (157.70). Senior Julian Campbell finished second in rings (9.4) and senior Matthew O’Malley also earned a runner-up showing in vault (9.5) for LTHS. Campbell also tied for seventh in parallel bars with Neuqua Valley’s Michael Baren as both scored a 9.3. Other notable results for the Lions included senior John Quinlan tying for fourth in floor (9.5) with three other gymnasts and sophomore Ben Taylor notching 10th place in parallel bars with a score of 8.6. In the all-around standings, LTHS freshman Alec Paras and Metea Valley freshman Zachary Taylor both scored 52.00 to tie for 15th place.

Sophomores Claire Williams and Mary Grace Lansing placed first and second in the 800-meter run, respectively, with times of 2 minutes, 23.69 seconds and 2 minutes, 25.50 seconds. In six other events, LTHS qualified for state with runner-up results. The secondplace finishers included: London White (300 hurdles: 47.32; 110 hurdles: 15.69), Sarah Barcelona (3,200: 11:44.61), Natalie Swinehart (200: 26.62), Olivia Kalata (pole vault: 9 feet, 9 inches) and Josie Medema (high jump: 4-11), The Lions also dominated the relay races, winning all four events. The times were 9:29.86 (3,200), 4:01.51 (1,600), 1:44.89 (800) and 49.09 (400).
