Riverside public facility decisions on the horizon Report outlines safety, code shortcomings of existing village buildings By BOB UPHUES Editor
Riverside voters could be faced with a referendum regarding improving or building new public facilities, such as a new public safety building, municipal building or major renovations to existing facilities as early as April 2019. Village President Ben Sells said Monday that such a referendum, which would appear on the same ballot as trustee candidates for office, would be possible after an architectural firm hired to assess and recommend options finishes up its work later this spring. Democrats turnout surged in primaries: report Countywide and locally, GOP voters outnumbered
By BOB SKOLNIK Contributing Reporter
Democratic turnout surged locally in the March 20 primary election as it did throughout suburban Cook County, according to a
report released last week by the Cook County Clerk David Orr. In Riverside Township, nearly four times as many primary voters took a Democratic ballots this year compared to the previous gubernatorial primary in 2014.
In that year, only 842 Riverside Township voters took a Democratic ballot, accounting for just 38.5 percent of the primary votes cast in Riverside Township. This year, Democratic primary voters outnumbered Republican primary voters by a 3-to-1 margin in Riverside
Township, which includes most of the village of Riverside, the eastern half of North Riverside, and the Hollywood section of Brookfield. This year 3,289 primary voters in Riverside See ELECTION REPORT on page 10

Kayak ‘regatta’ planned in honor of late township assessor
IN THIS ISSUE
Public invited to paddle the Des Plaines through Riverside in June By BOB UPHUES Editor
You might not have known it, but Riverside hosted a regatta in 2017. Of course, it was a mighty small regatta – three kayakers in all – who paddled under the radar along the bend of the Des Plaines River forming the southern end Riverside’s First Division all the way to the Swinging Bridge. With the village still officially discouraging launching and landing boats on Riverside’s riverbank, Connie Schmidt, Alex Gallegos and Tom Sisulak didn’t want to draw a crowd that might get them in hot water. They also wanted to make sure such a paddle would be feasible for a larger group when they publicly invited people to join them on June 24 at 10 a.m. for the 2nd Annual Scuff Gross Memorial Riverside Kayaking Regatta, named in honor of the late longtime Riverside Township assessor and avid boating enthusiast. “It was a thrill to see the view of the village from the river and retracing my dad’s steps on the river,” said Schmidt, one of Gross’ three daughters, who launched the regatta last year along with Gross’ Lions Club colleague, Gallegos, and his American Legion compatriot, Sisulak. “I only wish I could have done it with him,” she said. Gross served as Riverside Township assessor for 40 years, retiring in 2009. He died on July 4, 2016 at the age of 88. He had an adventurous streak, said Schmidt, and a lifelong love of sailing and boating, which started as a child with a canoe on the Des Plaines River. “My dad loved the river,” said Schmidt, who is president of the Illinois Chapter of the Sierra Club and now lives in far west suburban Warrenville, though she remains a member of Riverside Presbyterian Church, where her father was a deacon. She recalled one story her father told of a time when he was 12 or 13 and he and a friend capsized their canoe on a fast-moving Des Plaines near Swan Pond.

GET YOUR OAR IN: In honor of the late Scuff Gross (left), Riversiders are asked to join in the 2nd Annual Kayaking Regatta on the Des Plaines in June. The first one in 2017 (above) was an underthe-radar affair featuring Gross’ daughter, Connie Schmidt (with arms raised), Alex Gallegos (middle) and Tom Sisulak (rear). His friend grabbed a tree branch and pulled himself ashore. Gross attempted to swim after the canoe, giving up at the Ogden Avenue bridge. He walked back to downtown Riverside where he found the fire department in the midst of a recovery operation – for him. Schmidt said kayaking along Riverside’s banks was a lifelong dream, but one that had been variously prevented in the past by two dams and the village’s stance against boats launching and landing there. “It’s something I wanted to do all my life – to view Riverside from a different perspective,” Schmidt said. “Seeing it from the banks, looking up at the houses and landscape was a lovely way to view the town.” In June, the founding trio are inviting the public to join them in honoring Gross. Kayak-
ers are instructed to meet in the McCormick Woods at 31st Street and First Avenue in North Riverside at 10 a.m. Participants are responsible for bringing their own kayaks and IDNRrequired life vests. The group will launch from there and head downstream, gathering as a group near the base of the library before paddling en masse to the Swinging Bridge. Kayakers will continue downstream to the exit point, the Stony Ford Canoe Landing at 43rd Street and Oak Avenue in Lyons. Participants are invited to gather afterwards at La Barra restaurant in downtown Riverside. There’s no need to register to participate, though more information is available at www.facebook.com/ events/415986232158972.

Man charged with Brookfield car break-ins North Riverside resident Doushon Whitaker, 19, was charged with two counts of burglary, criminal trespassing and possession of stolen property after he was reportedly caught by police inside a vehicle in the garage of a home in the 3200 block of Vernon Avenue, Brookfield, just after midnight on May 2. Police responded to the home after the resident called to report someone banging on their front door and someone entering their garage. When they arrived, police reported finding a BMX-style bike on the sidewalk in front of the house and Whitaker getting out of a rear door of a vehicle parked inside the unlocked garage. According to police, Whitaker told them he was looking for a friend of his named “Tyler.” They also reported Whitaker had taken a phone-charging cord and loose change from the vehicle. From another vehicle parked in the garage, Whitaker reportedly took two packs of cigarettes. Police also reported that just prior to the 911 call from the resident on Vernon Avenue, someone residing in the 3200 block of Prairie Avenue called police after a man knocked on the door, asking for someone named Tyler. Subsequently, police received calls from another resident in the 3200 block of Vernon Avenue and someone from the 3100 block of Vernon Avenue reporting their vehicles had been broken into. A phone-charging cord had been taken
from a vehicle parked in the driveway of a home in the 3100 block of Vernon, while a bag containing a pair of gym shoes was taken from a vehicle parked in a garage in the 3200 block of Vernon. Police reported recovering the bag containing the shoes at the time of Whitaker’s arrest.
Car stolen from gas station North Riverside police responded to Community Gas and Food, 8545 Cermak Road in North Riverside, on April 30 at about 3 p.m. after a 71-year-old Cicero man reported that someone had stolen his light blue Ford Taurus, which had been parked at a gas pump. The victim stated he left the keys in the ignition of the car as he went inside the gas station’s food mart to make a purchase. When he returned to the pump, the car was gone.
The officer arrested Favela and police recovered more cannabis and paraphernalia from the vehicle during a search prior to towing the car. In addition to being charged with one count of felony possession of cannabis with intent to deliver, Favela was also cited for speeding and having no proof of vehicle insurance.
tests and she was arrested. During processing, the woman asked the officer if he was Chinese and said, “My condolences for your little squinty eyes.” The officer, who is not Chinese, reportedly ignored her comments.
A resident of the 3400 block of Sunnyside Avenue called police on the morning of May 3 to report that sometime after 2 a.m. someone forced open the side service door of his garage and removed several power and hand tools. Vehicles in the garage apparently were undisturbed, and other items of value were left untouched inside the garage.
In the days after a woman emailed the village at help@brookfieldil.gov on May 3 to report people continually blowing through a stop sign at Windemere and Elm avenues, Brookfield police reported issuing 10 citations to motorists for disobeying the sign. Police also issued a citation to one of the motorists for possessing a small amount of cannabis. “Sometimes it’s much more convenient for citizens to send an email,” said Deputy Chief Ed Petrak. “This is an easy way for residents to reach out to the village and police department.”

Roberto C. Favela, 22, of Chicago, faces felony drug charges after police reported seizing 124 grams of cannabis and $1,405 from his vehicle after a traffic stop on April 30 at 8:20 a.m. on 26th Street at Lewe Court in North Riverside. A police officer reported clocking Favela’s Infiniti G35 at 40 mph in a 25 mph zone and pulled the vehicle over. The officer reported smelling the odor of burnt cannabis as he talked to Favela, who directed the officer to a glass jar containing cannabis on the rear passenger seat.
A 26-year-old Tinley Park woman charged with driving under the influence of alcohol by Riverside police on the morning of May 5 reportedly made several unsolicited, racially offensive statements to a police officer she believed to be Chinese. According to the police report, her vehicle was illegally parked, facing the wrong direction, on East Burlington Street at Cowley Road at about 1:10 a.m. Police said tie marks in the parkway indicated the vehicle had left the roadway prior to stopping. Police stated the woman failed sobriety

Despite plea, Lincoln principal won’t be back Letter from asks Silva to rescind resignation By BOB SKOLNIK Contributing Reporter
Many parents at Lincoln School in Brookfield are upset that the school’s principal, Theresa Silva, won’t be back next year. Silva, who is in her first year as principal, submitted her letter of resignation in March shortly before the school board was going to vote whether to renew her contract. Two school board members have said that they would not have voted to renew her contract, and it appears as if Silva’s contract would not have been renewed had it come to a vote. But, in a matter of days parents obtained 40 signatures on a letter asking Silva to rescind her letter of resignation. At the April 23 meeting of the Lyons-Brookfield School District 103 Board of Education, Brookfield resident Erin Milankovic, the mother of two Lincoln School students, submitted a copy of the parents’ letter to Silva to the school board, asking
board members to try to keep Silva at Lincoln School. “She’s a great principal,” Milankovic said. “We don’t want her to leave.” Three other parents on April 23 also spoke in support of Silva, saying that she has changed the atmosphere at Lincoln for the better. In March, when Silva’s resignation, effective at the end of the school year, was announced, a number of Lincoln School teachers also spoke up in passionate support. The parents said it did not appear to them that Silva wants to leave Lincoln School. Gina Bacci, the mother of a Lincoln fifthgrader and the treasurer of the Lincoln School PTA, agrees. “I don’t have any proof of it, but I feel like she didn’t feel like her contract would get renewed, so instead of being let go she resigned,” Bacci told the Landmark. “I feel like given the opportunity to stay, she would have stayed.” Bacci says that in meetings with the PTA, Silva talks wistfully of things she would have done at Lincoln next year if she were returning. She said that Silva does not have another job lined up. “You can just tell that she’s not happy that
she’s not going to be there,” Bacci said. “I’m sure it was not what she wanted to do.” Bacci and Lincoln School teachers say that Silva is a principal who is always out and about in the school, visiting classes and interacting with students and teachers. “She’s never in her office; she’s always out doing something in a classroom,” Bacci said. Parents and teachers say that Silva is personable and has created a warm, harmonious atmosphere at Lincoln. They say that she treats parents, teachers, and students with respect and that no task is too small for her. “She’s very welcoming to families and parents,” Bacci said. “The morale inside the school is totally different than it has been for years. The teachers are happy.” Despite the entreaties of parents and teachers, it appears that the school board has no intention of asking Silva to stay on. School board President Marge Hubacek said that while she understands the wishes of the parents supporting Silva, there is nothing that can be done. “She resigned,” said Hubacek, who along with board member Joanne Schaeffer told the Landmark that they would not have voted to
renew Silva’s contract. “There is really nothing that we can do.” Hubacek said that while she is always willing to talk to parents and had a conversation recently with a parent who wants Silva to stay, there is little she can say about the situation. “There are personnel issues and just performance things that you just don’t talk about in public; they’re personnel matters,” Hubacek said. The letter from parents apparently will have no impact on the board. “I accepted it, but there’s nothing we’re going to do about it,” Hubacek said. The school board has not met with Silva and has had no direct conversations with her, Hubacek said. While she did not specifically address the parent’s letter or comment on her resignation, Silva in an email to the Landmark thanked parents and teachers for their support in response to questions from the newspaper. “I truly appreciate and am humbled by the outpouring of support from the staff and community,” Silva wrote. “I love Lincoln School -- the staff, the parents and all of the children. We have had an excellent year together.”

County to repave Eberly Ave. this summer
Traffic reduced to one lane each way during project By BOB UPHUES Editor
With Brookfield’s residential street improvement program already in full swing, motorists may already know which areas to avoid this summer. But there’s one more resurfacing project – on one of the village’s main drags – that the Cook County Department of Transportation has announced may also create some headaches in the coming months. Cook County will be resurfacing Eberly Avenue from 47th Street to Ogden Avenue, work that will also include installation of ADA sidewalk ramps, replacement of curb and gutter and repair of drainage structures. Work will begin sometime this summer, said Cook County spokeswoman Becky Schlikerman, but a specific date has not been announced. Whatever the start date, the work is expected to continue into November. Hollywood Avenue grade crossing closed May 12 Folks who live in the South Hollywood section of Brookfield may to find an alternate route in and out of the neighborhood later this week. The Burlington Northern-Santa Fe Railroad has announced it will be grinding and resurfacing the asphalt at the Hollywood Avenue grade crossing on May 12. The railroad said the grade crossing would be closed for one day. According to information provided by the village of Brookfield, the work may also impact commuter train schedules. More infor-
mation about schedule changes should be available at www.metrarail.com as the closure date approaches. Hollywood Avenue is the only roadway leading out of the neighborhood to the north side of the tracks. Motorists and pedestrians can still exit to the east via West Quincy Street or Waubansee Road. However, exiting motorists can only turn south from those streets, so people are asked to plan for potentially longer travel times and routes that day. — Bob Uphues

Brook Park parents raise funds for new playground Goal is to bring in $100,000 by spring 2019
By BOB UPHUES Editor
When construction breaks ground at Brook Park School in LaGrange Park on a major classroom addition later this month, students there will find themselves without an outdoor playground at least until the project is completed in the fall of 2019. In the meantime, parent volunteers in the Brook Park Council are hoping to raise $100,000 to fund the design and installation of a brand new playground on the south end of the school campus. While the BPC has held a couple of small fundraising events, on May 4 students launched the first major event – a walkathon – where individual classes took turns heading outside to walk laps around Vena Park, just across the street from Brook Park. As of late last week, the walkathon had raised $35,000 and the BPC is planning additional fundraisers in the future. The next big event will be the inaugural BPC golf outing on June 24, from which the council hopes to raise at least $5,000. Kate Amin, recording secretary of the BPC, said they hope to maintain the golf outing as an annual event, with proceeds from 2018 and 2019 going toward the playground fund. Owner wants to convert Riverside offices into condos
KOSEY CORNER
Medical building reportedly can’t attract tenants or buyer By BOB UPHUES Editor
The owner of a medical office building at 7234 Ogden Ave. in Riverside is asking the village to re-zone the property, which includes a 14,000-square-foot building and 39-space parking lot, so he can convert the structure into 12 condominiums. Dr. Tahir Sheikh, who has owned the property for more than 30 years, will make his case for rezoning the property at a public hearing before the Riverside Planning and Zoning Commission on May 23 at 7 p.m. at the Riverside Township Hall, 27 Riverside Road. Presently, the property – which sits immediately west of the Loyola Medicine Professional Building at 3722 Harlem Ave. – is zoned B1 Business District, which does not allow ground-floor residential uses. Sheikh, a psychiatrist who started his Riverside practice 37 years ago, is asking the village to reclassify his property as B1-TC, a transitional commercial zoning classification that allows broader residential uses, including on the ground floor. Plans filed with the village’s community development department indicate that Sheikh wants to convert the offices into one- and-two-bedroom condo units, four on each of the building’s three floors. The brick and synthetic stucco building at 7234 Ogden Ave. has two full floors above ground with a lower level that presents as a half-story from the exterior. It is somewhat awkwardly sited on

the property, with the main entrance facing west. There are seven parking spaces immediately adjacent to the west, with the rest of the parking located in the rear. Impervious surfaces cover almost the entirety of the property. According to Riverside’s community development director, Sonya Abt, after Sheikh purchased the property he built an addition on to an existing mixed-use office/residential building and converted it to an all-office use. Abt said the standards for having property rezoned are different from obtaining a zoning variation and include looking at the impact rezoning would have on adjacent properties, public gain versus the hardship imposed by the existing zoning and the length of time a property is vacant, among others. Unlike a zoning variation, an appli-
cant does not have to prove meeting every standard in order to qualify. The property immediately west of the office building is zoned residential, but Abt said asking for that classification would have created zoning conflicts with respect to building setbacks and impervious surface coverage that don’t exist with the transitional business district classification. The basis for Sheikh’s request, which he laid out in an April 2 zoning application to the village, is largely financial. According to Sheikh, the building has had a difficult time attracting tenants, even at below-market rental rates. For the last three years, wrote Sheikh, the building has had an occupancy rate of about 15 percent. “I have used three different real estate companies over the past three years,” Sheikh wrote to the village. “I have even tried auctioning the building. I was willing to accept less than $700,000 for a beautiful 14,000-square-foot building. All with no success.” Sheikh said in 2016 the property appraised for $1.4 million and that he holds a mortgage of more than $700,000 on it. In paying $10,500 a month in mortgage payments, Sheikh wrote, he’s losing more than $120,000 a year on the largely vacant office building. Perhaps helping Sheikh’s cause somewhat is that the property was zoned for residential use prior to 1983, he says. “Riverside is a very desirable location for home ownership,” Sheikh wrote. “This will be a win-win situation for both the village and myself.”
RBHS freshman ‘OK’ after spinal surgery Fourteen-year-old Riverside resident Ethan Tkalec is doing pretty well a week after major back surgery. Ethan, a Riverside-Brookfield high school freshman who suffers from a rare and incurable disease called giant axonal neuropathy (GAN) had spinal fusion surgery last week at Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago to strengthen his back and prevent his spine from collapsing on his organs. The surgery, which will strengthen Ethan’s back was successful, Ethan’s mother, Gelse Tkalec, said. But, Ethan has been bothered by hiccups, which make it difficult for him to sleep through the night and
strains his system. He remains in the pediatric intensive care unit at Lurie, but he and his family hope that he may go home later this week. “He’s doing OK; he’s not doing fantastic,” Gelse Tkalec said on Monday afternoon. “We’re having problems getting rid of these hiccups, and that’s just awful for him.” Gelse Tkalec said that the surgeon was very pleased with how the surgery went. On April 27, Ethan’s schoolmates and RBHS staff threw him a party as he left school to prepare for the surgery. — Bob Skolnik

Experience Riverside in the RAW
AW! The first time I saw and heard that 11 years ago, I thought it was something else that was going to occur in Riverside. However, I soon learned it meant Riverside Arts Weekend. Whew! On the weekend of May 19 and 20, RAW will return to Guthrie Park as one of the finest art events in the Chicagoland area. The event has grown over the years and as a juried art fair, entrants are asked to submit requests to participate and requests are reviewed. The event attracts artists from across the country, many of them returning every year. All methods of artistic media will be on display and available for purchase or to simply enjoy. Many of the artists display methods of creativity that will fascinate those who possess artistic qualities as well of those who simply have an appreciation of art in all its forms. The two-day event has something for everyone in the form of ongoing entertainment and the availability of food and beverages. Children will find they can stop in at the Riverside Arts Center tent to dabble in some art creations. RAW weekend is also a good time to explore the “art” that is Riverside exemplified by its architecture and landscape. It is the perfect time for residents and non-residents to explore the village and reintroduce themselves into its heritage. The event is the work of a nonprofit board of directors and many volunteers who work hard to create a sense of anticipation through an annual “spectacle” in the week leading up to RAW. Who can forget the “coyotes” that were seen all over downtown or the knit lamp post covers, and painted swans and, of course, the decorated tandem bikes. This year? As of this writing, I do not know but we will be surprised, pleasantly of course, as to what it will be for 2018. RAW will take place on Saturday, May 19 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, May 20 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Guthrie Park at Riverside and Bloomingbank roads, across from the train station. Your favorite local newspaper, the Landmark, will have a booth, so stop by and tell them who your favorite columnist is. After all, newspapers are an art unto their own. Riverside trivia: Guthrie Park was the site of an art fair probably around 40 years ago or more. It was the endeavor of two local young men, Clyde “Moose” Moravec and Mike West. Good to see the arts have returned to Guthrie Park.

Riverside seeks to be haven for birders Volunteers gathering data to become Audubon Important Bird Area By BOB UPHUES Editor
You may have noticed a platoon of people, often early in the morning, looking through binoculars and scanning the wooded areas near the Des Plaines River in Riverside over the weekend. No, an army of peeping toms is not marshaling its troops on the village’s riverbanks. Rather, they are birders attempting to spot species presently flying through town during peak migration season. They are part of a larger, concerted effort to have Riverside recognized as an Important Bird Area – yes, that’s an official designation – by the Audubon Society, which administers the program in the U.S. for BirdLife International, a global partnership comprising conservation organizations. Riverside officials are trying to heighten awareness of their quest to have the village designated an Important Bird Area – or IBA, for short -- through a couple of events this month. Last week, Village President Ben Sells proclaimed May 12 World Migratory Bird Day in Riverside to coincide with the annual spring celebration of migratory birds as they make their way back north from their
winter havens. On Saturday, May 12 residents are invited to meet in front of the Riverside Public Library, 1 Burling Road at 9 a.m. From there, groups will walk along the river to the Scout Cabin, take a break and then stroll back to the library. The roughly two-mile excursion should be over by noon. On Saturday, May 19 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the village has invited Audubon Great Lakes to host a plant sale fundraiser, the proceeds of which will go to local Audubon chapters. While the deadline for ordering specific plants has ended, the Audubon Society will have plenty of native plants available for purchase. The organization will set up in the Green Parking Lot at 63 E. Burlington St. Some of those participating in the May 12 walk, like Sells and his wife, Jill Mateo, a small-mammal biologist and avid birder, are sure to be part of the ongoing data collection effort undertaken to obtain the IBA designation from the Audubon Society. The Audubon Society asks for three years of data regarding significant numbers of 15 notable species in order for an area to be considered as an IBA, said Sells. But after just one week, Mateo, Sells and about 20 other volunteers identified significant numbers of eight species, with another wave of migra-
tory birds coming through the area over the next few weeks. “We saw more than 200 yellow-rumped warblers and a bumper crop of orioles,” said Sells of last week’s birding sessions. “I’m having a blast. This is all new to me.” It’s also new to Cathy Maloney, chairwoman of the Riverside Landscape Advisory Commission, who said the idea of approaching Audubon Great Lakes about designating Riverside an IBA was the result of informal meetings she had with Mateo, whom Maloney identified as the person spearheading the data collection effort, and fellow Riverside residents Melinda and Steve Pruett-Jones. Melinda Pruett-Jones is the executive director of the American Ornithological Society while her husband, Steve, is professor of ornithology at University of Chicago. “We have some Riversiders who really know their stuff,” Maloney said. According to Sells, the new initiative to get the village recognized as an IBA fits with Riverside’s renewed focus on the river as a benefit not only naturally, but economically. It’ll also be something of a feather in the village’s cap. Most IBA’s are sections of towns or forest preserve areas – Salt Creek Woods, for ex-

ample is among the 90 or so such areas designated in the state since 2000. If Riverside is accepted, it would be the first entire municipality so designated in the state. “When you start looking at your town as a natural spot, it changes what you see and how you think about where you live,” Sells said. Since he’s started birding, Sells said he and Mateo have identified scores of bird species in Riverside. The two started a Riverside Birding Network community page on Facebook last week, one they hope may end up converting to a nature network after also noticing snakes, turtles and other wildlife along the river during their birding excursions. Since the two dams were removed in 2012, the river has sprung to life, said Sells. “The comeback of the river is a remarkable story,” he said.

Fostering harmony amid discord Area residents collaborate to raise music education nonprofit’s profile By BOB UPHUES Editor
Venisha Buckley seems nervous. As she slowly climbs the stairs to the stage at Wire, a combination music venue/school/production incubator opened on Roosevelt Road in Berwyn in 2013 by a group of Oak Park and River Forest investors, Venisha doesn’t look like someone thrilled about the prospect of performing for the camera. But once the music starts, Venisha, an eighth-grader at Beethoven Middle School on Chicago’s South Side who goes by “Famous X” when she’s performing, flips a switch. Photographer Kevin Ryan’s job is easy as he clicks away a few feet from the stage. Venisha is among a group of seven budding middle school musicians involved in a nonprofit organization called Guitars Over Guns, an after-school music mentoring program that provides structure and a positive outlet for atrisk kids in some of Chicago’s toughest neighborhoods. The Wire photo shoot on May 1 was to get images for a print advertisement in an upcoming issue of Downbeat magazine, which is donating space in its publication for Guitars Over Guns to reach a wider audience. A creative team from Edelman, a worldwide marketing and public relations agency, took Guitars Over Guns under its wing as a pro bono client after fielding proposals from several nonprofits. The head of that creative team, Riverside
ELECTION REPORT from page 1 Township took a Democratic ballot, accounting for 76 percent of all primary votes cast in the township. In other area townships the pattern was similar. In Lyons Township the share of Democratic primary voters more than doubled going from 36.9 percent in 2014 to 74.5 percent this year. In Proviso Township the share of Democratic primary voters increased from 69.1 percent in 2014 to 86.7 percent this year. Although Democratic turnout has surged across the nation in a number of elections since the election of Donald Trump as president in 2016, probably the biggest reason for the upsurge in Democratic turnout in this year’s primary is that this year there was a hotly contested primary race for governor, featuring millions of dollars spent on advertising. In 2014, then incumbent Gov. Pat Quinn faced only light opposition from little-known
resident Steven Slivka, himself a musician, was drawn to what Guitars Over Guns was trying to accomplish. The hope, said Slivka, is to introduce Guitars Over Guns to more Chicago schools. “It shows the power of music to teach kids discipline, to give them something to look forward to and believe in, in places where things like this are missing or no longer exist,” Slivka said. Slivka said his introduction to music in grade school in Berwyn – the band director was a working jazz musician – was transformative. “My life was changed by my music director in grade school,” said Slivka, who is chief creative officer at Edelman Chicago. “He helped me out when no one needed to. Music was the entry point into what I do now.” In order to give the Downbeat photo shoot an authentic feel, the organizers reached out to Wire co-founder Chris Neville, of Oak Park. The young musicians got to spend time on the stage of a professional club and Wire’s staff donated their time. “It’s the kind of cause we’re very much behind, so it was an easy sell for me,” said Neville, whose club has hosted and whose band, Tributosaurus, has played at Concert Across America to End Gun Violence for the past two years. Started by Chicago-area native Chad Bernstein in 2008 in Miami, Guitars Over Guns spread its reach to Chicago four years ago, connecting working musicians with children
who are looking for an alternative to the violence of their communities through music. “The presence of a caring adult is essential for everyone, but especially for those who have experienced trauma in their lives,” said Andrew DeMuro, regional director for Guitars Over Guns. DeMuro is himself a working musician. In addition to being a member of an acoustic trio called The Shades, DeMuro appeared on the TV show “The Voice” in 2016. Prior to joining Guitar Over Guns, DeMuro taught at Urban Prep Academy, an all-boys charter high school on Chicago’s near Southwest Side. Music wasn’t part of the curriculum at Urban Prep, but kids would find a way to incorporate music into their everyday lives at school, according to DeMuro, from spontane-
ous singing in the hallways between classes to drumming on desk tops. DeMuro sought to give those musical impulses structure in the form of an after-school choir program. It was important for kids, DeMuro said, “having people who are there every day and giving them this space and telling them it’s OK to be you.” In Chicago, 11 musicians from Guitars Over Guns work with about 300 students twice a week after school in two South Side schools as well as a church-affiliated music studio in Bronzeville. “For a lot of these kids, it’s the only positive thing they have going,” Slivka said. “I wanted to take the opportunity to show the kids as they are – as artists -- and make them look like everybody else in Downbeat.”
activist Tio Hardiman in the primary. In 2014, Republicans had a heated primary with millions spent on advertising by eventual winner Bruce Rauner, which drew Republican voters to the polls. State Rep. Mike Zalewski, who also serves as the Democratic committeeman of Riverside Township, said that the competitive Democratic race for governor was a major factor in the increased Democratic turnout this year as was increased energy from Democrats since November 2016. “I think nationally you’re seeing trends that are favorable to the Democratic Party, and I think that’s reflected in the township itself,” Zalewski said. Republican turnout fell in the 2018 primary. In the 2014 primary 1,343 voters in Riverside Township took a Republican ballot; this year 1,038 did, a drop of about 23 percent. Nearly 2,000 fewer primary voters in Lyons Township took a Republican ballot this year compared to four years ago. Similarly, there were more than 1,000 fewer Republican primary voters in Proviso Township this year
compared to 2014. The report also contained other interesting bits of information. The second precinct of Riverside Township -- otherwise known as Riverside Lawn, where the Cook County Land Bank has purchased more than 20 homes in an attempt to depopulate the flood-prone neighborhood -- had the fewest number of voters, 19, of any precinct in suburban Cook County. The first precinct of Lyons Township, which includes the southernmost tip pf Riverside’s First Division portion had the fifth fewest voters, 57, in this year’s primary. But that precinct also drew the fifth-highest voter turnout of any precinct in the county at 55.9 percent. Women turned out for the primary at a higher rate than men in suburban Cook County. Women accounted for 54 percent of all votes cast in this year’s primary even though they make up 51.5 percent of the population. The report also shows what was clear soon after the election, that Marie Newman, who narrowly lost to incumbent Congressman Dan Lipinski (D-Western Springs) in the Democratic primary for the 3rd Congressional District,
outpolled Lipinski in the suburban portion district and did especially well in Brookfield and LaGrange. In the small portion of southern Brookfield that is in the 3rd Congressional District, Newman beat Lipinski by a nearly 2-to-1 margin, picking up about 65 percent of the vote. Newman also ran very strongly in her home town of LaGrange, picking up more than 65 percent of the vote in many precincts there. But Newman also packed a punch in Lipinski’s hometown of Western Springs, garnering 60 percent of the vote there and losing just one precinct – by three votes. Overall Newman won 51.69 percent of the vote in the suburban Cook County portion of the district and won five of the eight suburban townships in the district. Her best township was Lyons Township, which includes the Brookfield portion of the district, which she carried with 57.68 percent of the vote there. Lipinski’s best suburban township was Stickney Township, where he won 56.94 percent of the vote.

TRAIL CONDITIONS
THE LANDMARK VIEW
uesday, May 8 was the big switchover for four communities -- Brookfield, Riverside, North Riverside and McCook – partnering on West Central Consolidated Communications, or WC3. WC3 is a joint emergency dispatch center that will handle all fire and police calls for all four communities. We say “will” because as of this writing just before noon on May 8, all four local emergency dispatch desks were staffed as the transition to WC3 took place. It wasn’t as simple as flipping a switch and automatically changing over to the new central dispatch center inside the North Riverside Police Department. There was a lot of data migrating over the course of Tuesday, and it was a process that was expected to take hours to complete. “Everything is going as planned,” said Brookfield Deputy Police Chief Ed Petrak on Tuesday morning. Riverside Village Manager Jessica Frances also said Tuesday morning that WC3 was expected to be fully functional by May 9 and that the plan was to lock the lobby to the police station, as planned, at 5 p.m. on Tuesday. However, anyone walking into the secure vestibule of the police station can contact emergency personnel by a phone there. Brookfield will staff its front desk throughout the night Tuesday into Wednesday, said Petrak, “Just in case something happens.” Frances reiterated that residents should get used to calling 911 if they want to reach police immediately. While dialing the non-emergency numbers for police and fire will still be answered during business hours, calling that number after hours will send you to a prompt giving options. For immediate connection for any emergency – police, fire or public works – after hours, you should call 911. Of course, residents in Riverside can also reach village officials through the Riverside Responds app, and Brookfield residents looking for assistance that may not be an emergency after hours can email to help@ brookfieldil.gov. North Riverside police dispatch center – which is where WC3 is located – will be staffed 24 hours a day. In Riverside, the move to consolidated dispatch dovetails with the ongoing look at the village’s public facilities, particularly the outdated police and fire headquarters. While officials have informally talked about the future of the village’s municipal campus near the township hall, there’s a very intentional effort under way. This summer, it looks like residents will get their chance to provide input on how or if Riverside should move ahead to modernize or even replace its public safety facilities. Such a project could also be an opportunity to consolidate all of the village’s public safety and administrative functions in one place. But, any such plan is sure to be expensive and decisions made regarding such facilities will have decades-long impact. So if Riverside is going to take that leap, residents and officials need to make sure they get it right.

Outside human time and control in the National Groves
he trail is sodden. Beyond the blooming understory at North Riverside’s National Grove South, the near-banks of the Des Plaines are wet from last week’s furious little storm and water collects along the riverside trail in shallow, tannic pools. The mud is slick and carries a stink of damp funk. An extended family of whitetail deer, after ambling through the grove, settle into woods nearby, eating fresh shoots from the now-green ground. Leafing trees are busy with new firsts for the year, including Redstarts and a Black-and-white Warbler. But this trip isn’t for sights. I’ve come to test my ears, or rather to use them, and I’ve brought along an audio recorder and small shotgun microphone as listening aides. Not exactly the lowest-tech trip I’ve made to the field, but I’m seeking to isolate and enhance a single sense and, well, that means I’m also wearing headphones. The effect is immediate. Electric. A robin’s throaty chut-chut-chut comes hot off the mic. The dull thudding of a far-off woodpecker mixes with the foreground wind and with the wet, mid-range bleat of a parent Canada goose on the far bank as an army of goslings traipses toward the water. Sitting here on a downed log, beneath the headphones, I
can hear beyond my own hearing. The sounds of the trail and the sounds outside the trail fill my head completely, and it’s not all good. We live enveloped in noise and so do the animals of the National Groves. The planes, trains and automobiles, all audible in incessance. Sounds of the spring woods don’t compete with the industrial noise of suburban mobility but instead abide them. The birdsong and leafrustling and splashing and stick-breaking of life in the forest preserves, as the preserves morph into spring, all exist in parallel to the often ugly violence of our own sounds. To eavesdrop along the river is to hear in stark contrast two different but interrelated worlds, man-made and natural, road and river. And to dial in the natural is to hear evidence that spring sounds like spring: New birds, new ground squirrels, same sounds repeated year over year, against whatever odds our planet faces, an act of continuance. I first wrote permanence in my notebook but I can’t say that. I can say the birds and other animals are audible and, in those sounds, are timeless. They continue to live buffeted by us but outside human time and control. That still sounds great.

RBHS volleyball star shows net value
Bageanis will play at St. Ambrose next season By MARTY FARMER

ason Bageanis is a standout player in every sense of the word on the Riverside-Brookfield High School volleyball team. As an imposing 6-foot-5, 210-pound senior middle hitter, he is unequivocally the Bulldogs’ biggest, best and most experienced player. “Jason is a three-year starter,” RBHS volleyball coach Dan Bonarigo said. “We obviously look for him to lead the way and dominate the net. He’s quite a force and really connects with our setter (Jonah Raith).” With only two seniors on the roster, Bageanis’ leadership has been a natural progression. “When I was a sophomore on varsity, I just wanted to learn and get ready for the upcoming years,” Bageanis said. “Maclean Nolan played the same position as me when I was a sophomore, so I learned a lot from him. And Bono [Bonarigo] is a great coach who taught me almost everything I know about volleyball.” Bageanis, who picked up volleyball his freshman year, has been a quick study. His natural athleticism coupled with a passion for volleyball has netted Bageanis a scholarship from St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa. “I stayed for an overnight visit and everybody was very nice and welcoming,” Bageanis said. “The volleyball coach [Dawn Kerr] is really nice and they have a good program. I’m very excited about playing there next year.” When he joins the Bees next season, they will be adding an explosive player to their roster. Bageanis has 183 kills, 59 service points, 42 blocks, 30 digs and 19 aces in 59 sets this season. In 2017, he finished with 221 kills, 75 blocks over 91 sets for RBHS. Last winter, Bageanis played well as a starting forward on the Bulldogs’ basketball team. The All-Metro Suburban Conference pick averaged 7 points and 5.5 rebounds while shooting 57 percent from the field. He also led the

He had the highest vertical leap on our team this past season,” RBHS coach Mike Reingruber said. “He is a kid that liked to do the little things to help his team succeed. Naz hoops standout picks Harvard
Stritzel chooses Crimson over dozens of schools
M
y cell phone buzzed during a typically hectic deadline day last week. I knew a text was waiting for me. The smile it elicited from me after reading it was gravy. Ten words encapsulating the realization of a dream appeared on the screen: Annie verbally committed to Harvard today. Thrilled is an understatement! Nazareth Academy girls basketball coach Ed Stritzel was notifying me that his daughter and the Roadrunners’ top player, Annie, had chosen Harvard for her last stop as a student-athlete. Talk about a recruiting coup for the Crimson. Cambridge, Massachusetts just picked up a big-time player. Only a junior, Stritzel had about 30 offers, but ultimately chose Harvard over DePaul, Columbia and Illinois State.
“I picked Harvard because of the opportunities both the academics and basketball will provide me,” Stritzel said. “It’s just the best fit for me. I can’t begin to say how relieved I am to have made the decision to go to Harvard. It gives me the opportunity to play with no pressure and focus on my high school senior season.” A stress-free Stritzel is a scary thought for her opponents next season. She averaged 24 points, 5.1 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 3.8 steals in leading Nazareth to a runnerup finish in the Class 3A state playoffs this season. The Roadrunners (331) had the best season in program history, but lost to Peoria Richwoods 55-46 in the Class 3A state final. While the team will miss the contributions of seniors Alyssa Geary and Marissa Metz next season, Stritzel ensures Naza-

It’s special to share this with my dad. He is a phenomenal coach who is always there to support and guide me.” Stritzel also excels academically with a 4.3 GPA and 29 on her ACT. As the high school sports year winds down, I always enjoy seeing the lists and
photos of student-athletes from schools like Riverside-Brookfield, Lyons Township, Fenwick and Nazareth signing their National Letter of Intent to play college sports. In many instances, they represent the best and the brightest from the Class of 2018. That certainly applies to Stritzel as a Class of 2019 standout. While it was very cool to hear about her college choice, I’m more excited about getting to watch Annie play one more season.
Friars’ Stramaglia dominates Trinity Junior earns win, strikes out nine and hits three-run homer
By Melvin Tate Contributing Reporter
After blowing a late lead to rival Trinity in a loss at the Priory on April 30, the Fenwick High School softball team gained measures of redemption and revenge Saturday afternoon at Triton College in River Grove. “I knew right from the start that our team came ready to play,” Fenwick coach Mike Marrese said. “Our warm ups and the spirit throughout the game were terrific. The kids were having a good time. That’s the main thing for us, which is to come ready and have a good time.” Fenwick junior Alyssa Stramaglia starred on the mound and at the plate in the Friars’ 6-2 win over the Blazers. “I thought we improved a lot,” Stramaglia said after the Trinity game. “We had a lot of motivation in the dugout. On the mound, I just wanted to get that firstpitch strike and then just go from there.” Stramaglia scattered six hits, allowed two runs and struck out nine in a complete-game victory.
