A Crystal Lake man charged with killing his 5-year-old son and burying him in a shallow grave in Woodstock is an attorney connected to a Riverside property management company.

Andrew T. Freund Sr., 60, and Joann Cunningham, 36, are both charged with five counts of first-degree mur-

der in the death of their son Andrew “A.J.” Freund, whose body was recovered April 24 in a shallow grave in a remote area of Woodstock, according to Crystal Lake police.

Brookfield board votes to retain assembly at 8 Corners Such uses need special zoning permission, but aren’t outlawed

A majority of Brookfield trustees on April 22 rejected a plan to place a blanket prohibition on businesses that promote general assembly, including religious assembly, at commercial properties in the Eight Corners business district.

By a vote of 4 to 2, trustees voted to retain those special uses in the district, which is centered on the Veterans Memorial Circle and includes the two-block stretch of Broadway Avenue from Monroe Avenue to Lincoln Avenue.

Among those uses retaining special-use status are those classified as library/cultural exhibit, religious assembly, indoor assembly/entertainment and outdoor assembly/entertainment.

Voting to retain public assembly as special uses in the code were trustees Michelle Ryan, Edward Cote, Ryan Evans and Nicole Gilhooley. Voting against were trustees Michael Garvey and David LeClere.

The decision was a win for property owner Linda Sokol Francis and her son, Rev. Karl Sokol, who still have plans to bring a development that includes a religious assembly component to Eight Corners.

It was just such a plan that some officials had been trying to avoid considering, ever since allowing Rev. Two people, a 20-year-old Brookfield man and a male juvenile from LaGrange Park, told police they were robbed at gunpoint while attempting to purchase cannabis on April 24 about 6:45 p.m. in the 3500 block of Arden Avenue in Brookfield.

No one was hurt in the incident, during which the alleged offenders took a backpack containing various personal items from the adult victim.

According to the police report, the adult victim reportedly set up the drug purchase on the social media app SnapChat, agreeing to meet with the seller at Washington and Arden avenues in Brookfield.

A black Nissan sedan with tinted windows pulled up and the driver motioned the two victims to get inside the vehicle, which parked in the 3500 block of Arden Avenue.

There were two other passengers, both male teenagers, inside the vehicle.

The driver abruptly pulled out a black handgun, according to the police report, and demanded personal property from the victims, who then exited the vehicle, which was last seen headed westbound on Washington Avenue.

The victims obtained a partial license plate number, but that plate reportedly was registered to a different vehicle.

police charged a 25-year-old Brookfield resident with driving under the influence after an officer reported finding him slumped over the steering wheel of his 2005 Chrysler in a parking space in the 9100 block of Broadway Avenue on April 25 about 4:05 p.m.

According to police, the car was running and in gear and the slumbering driver had his foot on the brake. The officer woke up the driver by knocking on the car door and had the driver perform field sobriety tests, which he reportedly failed.

The man’s blood-alcohol content, according to police, was .266, which is more than three times the legal limit of .08.

■ North Riverside police charged a 25-year-old man with drunken driving and cited him for several traffic offenses after he reportedly drove his GMC vehicle into the woods of the forest preserve at 9th Avenue and 26th Street on April 21 at 3:15 a.m.

Police located the heavily damaged vehicle about 50 feet into the woods, where they contacted the driver who said he was not injured. The driver, whose address was not provided by police, reportedly told police he’d consumed seven or eight beers at the Berwyn tavern earlier that night.

A breath test reportedly indicated that the driver’s blood-alcohol content was .162, which is more than twice the legal limit.

Daddy-daughter dance scuffle Brookfield police responded to the gymnasium of Congress Park School, 4601 Raymond Ave., on April 26 about 7 p.m. after a man attending a daddy-daughter dance there called police to report that he’d been in an altercation with another dad, who he claimed spit on him.

The alleged victim told police he’s had past problems with the alleged offender. On this occasion, the victim said, he was walking behind the offender when the offender “pretended to lose his balance and fall into” the victim.

A short time later, according to the victim, the offender claimed the victim had stepped on the foot of a woman before chest-bumping the victim and spitting in his face. The victim then said he placed the offender in a headlock for about 30 seconds before the two were separated.

The offender denied spitting at the victim and said that the victim had forcefully shoved him and stepped on a woman’s foot, prompting him to confront the victim about it. The offender claimed he was walking away when the victim grabbed him from behind, put him in a headlock and started punching him in the head. The offender claimed he ended up with a fat lip, but police reported “no obvious signs of injury.”

Due to the conflicting stories and inconsistent witness statements, police did not make any arrests, but they told the two men to stay away from one another.

These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Riverside, North Riverside and Brookfield police departments, April 2128, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

Local grocer, brewer team up to toast Riverside’s 150th ‘Lush by Design’ ale celebrates Olmsted’s plan for the village

With Riverside celebrating the 150th birthday of Frederick Law Olmsted’s plan for the village, a Riverside business and a brewery with local connections have teamed up to help residents hoist a toast in the founders’ honor.

On April 26, Riverside Foods and BuckleDown Brewery officially unveiled their “Lush

by Design” dry-hopped wheat ale during a special tasting event at the downtown Riverside grocery store, followed by a celebratory keg-tapping down the street at La Barra Ristorante.

“The reception so far has been very warm,” said Peter Boutsikakis, co-owner of Riverside Foods. “I hope this can be an ongoing project to highlight different aspects of the community.”

Riverside Foods has been stocking BuckleDown products since the brewery started canning beer in 2015, and BuckleDown has been a consistent participant in the Frederick Law Olmsted Society’s HopStop craft beer festival each fall.

A portion of the sales -- $1 per six pack, said Boutsikakis – will go to support the Olmsted Society and Riverside Arts Center.

The 12-ounce cans, sold by the six-pack for $9.99 at the store, feature a an Olmstedinspired wrap depicting the famed landscape architect’s General Plan of Riverside – the brewery got permission from the Riverside Historical Commission to use the map.

The “Lush by Design” in Victorian script refers to Olmsted’s 1869 vision for Riverside, said Boutsikakis. The wrap itself was designed by BuckleDown co-owner Sean Maloney. The brewer is co-owner Ike Orcutt, who is a Riverside resident.

“Peter came to us with the idea of a beer to celebrate Olmsted’s 1869 plan that both Riverside Foods and BuckleDown could put their thumbprint on,” said Orcutt, who moved to the village about a year ago to be closer to the Lyons-based brewery. “I was all over it.”

The brew uses Motueka hops, a variety from New Zealand with which Orcutt was experimenting when Boutsikakis inquired about a partnership on a celebratory beverage for the 150th.

“The hops present a tropical aspect and a juiciness to the dry beer, and I thought it’d be spot-on with spring around the corner,” Boutsikakis said.

While the BuckleDown might brew another

batch of Lush by Design, for now it’s a very limited run of just 100 cases, sold exclusively at Riverside Foods, 40 E. Burlington St. As of April 30, there were just 40 cases left in stock, Boutsikakis said.

If you miss out on a six pack, you can buy a pint on draft, while they last, at four locations in Riverside, including La Barra, The Chew Chew, Mollie’s Public House and 34 East Lounge, all in downtown Riverside.

Brookfield Public Library officials got some good news recently when they were awarded a $125,000 Live and Learn Construction Grant through the Illinois State Library to help fund construction of a new facility at 3541 Park Ave. next year.

Two dozen libraries had applied for Live and Learn grants through the program, which had a pool of $670,000 to divvy up for remodeling and new construction projects.

Riverside Public Library, which is in the midst of raising money to fund a major renovation of its lower level space, fell just short of receiving a grant.

Brookfield, however, received the maximum award the program provides for new construction projects. During a March webinar where grant applications were judged, Brookfield’s new library proposal received a perfect score of 10.

“Reviewer remarks focused on the demonstrated space constraints, the number of residents turned away from classes and events and the library’s referendum experience,” a press release from Brookfield Public Library Director Kimberly Coughran stated.

The Illinois State Library notified Brookfield officials about the award on April 18.

Riverside’s lower-level project received a score of 9.6, according to Riverside Library Director Janice Foley.

The $125,000 will help bolster a growing construction fund for the new approximately 21,000-square-foot library, whose total cost is estimated to run between $10.5 and $10.8 million.

The library board has saved $5.9 million in a special reserve fund and created a nonprofit foundation, which is pursuing private donations. The largest single donation received to date is $1 million from Linda Sokol Francis, a businesswoman and former village trustee for whom the new library will be named.

The foundation has collected almost $200,000 more in other private donations and has received a loan guarantee from First National Bank of Brookfield of up to $3.5 million.

In March, the Brookfield Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously recommended approving the library’s preliminary planned development application. On April 22, the village board got its first look at the application.

The plan drew a couple of cursory questions from Trustee Edward Cote regarding energy efficiency, the possibility of adding either a green roof or solar panels and the

future location of an outdoor book dropbox.

Trustee Michelle Ryan praised the plan.

“I know this has been a long process, but it seems like you’re on a great path,” Ryan said.

“This is going to be great.”

The village board vote on the preliminary plan at their May 13 meeting.

If the village board accepts the preliminary application, as expected, the library’s architect will begin work on the final planned development application, which will head back to the Planning and Zoning Commission, likely within three months according to architect Dan Pohrte.

“The additional information that will be included in this [final] presentation are further development of the site/storm water engineering, further development of the site and landscaping plan, including all proposed materials and proposed plantings, along with overall light levels, and major building material selections to include a material board along with images and elevation drawings to illustrate intent,” Pohrte said in an email.

A positive recommendation of the final plan there would send it back to the village board for a vote. Library officials hope construction on the new library can begin in spring 2020.

Riverside Library plans lower-level buildout Despite falling short in their bid for a state construction grant, Riverside Public Library officials are planning to start the first phase of the lower-level renovation later this year, according to Library Director Janice Foley.

The library’s architect is preparing construction documents for an Early Learners room for children up to age 5, which will be located in the southwest corner of the lower level. Foley said the hope is for the architect to seek bids in May or June, with construction kicking off in August.

The Early Learners area will separate the youngest, and often boisterous, patrons in an area with a fine view of the Des Plaines River and shelving and furniture appropriate for that age group.

The Friends of the Riverside Public Library are raising funds to pay for those furnishings. Two walls will be built to separate it from the central atrium/Children’s Services area as well as a new public meeting room.

In all, the total cost for the lower-level renovation is pegged at about $1.3 million. The library is raising the money purely from private donations. To date, they’ve raised about $190,000.

Riverside’s last remaining national banking chain will be pulling out of the village this summer, part of a broader trend throughout the nation.

Bank of America will close its branch bank at 3300 Harlem Ave. on July 23, a company spokeswoman confirmed last week.

PNC Bank, another national chain, shut down its downtown Riverside location in May 2018.

That leaves Riverside with just two banks, Riverside Bank and First American Bank, both of them located in the village’s downtown and both much more regionally focused chains with branches in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin.

Diane Wagner, spokeswoman for Bank of America, said the Riverside branch’s closure was in response to changing consumer habits and the company’s need to align its branch network accordingly.

“Our goal is to provide the right network for our customers to do their banking, including financial centers and ATMs, online and mobile banking and bank by phone, so we’re constantly adapting our banking center network to fit customers’ changing needs, and provide the best opportunities for growth for our business,” Wagner said in an email. “That includes consolidating centers where we have overlap, and investing in new centers where there’s a high growth opportunity.”

Wagner said the receiving branch for the Riverside customers will be at the Bank of America location at 6400 Cermak Road in Berwyn. Other area locations include 6720 W. Roosevelt Road in Oak Park and 2337 S. Cicero Ave. in Cicero.

When the Riverside branch closes, the ATM located in the parking lot across the street will also be removed, though Bank of America is “looking for a different [ATM] location nearby to serve the community.”

Asked how many other area Bank of America branches are closing, Wagner said, “We don’t have a specific number of closures as we continually evaluate and adapt our network based on customer needs/preferences.”

Bank of America owns the property at 3300 Harlem Ave. as well as the parking lot across the street to the south. Between the two properties, the parcels comprise nearly 32,000 square feet of land zoned for commercial and mixed-use development.

Wagner said the bank’s property management firm was preparing to list the parcels for sale.

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency issued a No Further Remediation letter for the roughly 13,000-square-foot parcel south of East Burlington Street where a parking lot and ATM machine are located.

According to the letter, the chemical benzene contaminates the soil in the vicinity of the ATM machine, but no further remediation is required at the site unless it is excavated.

Riverside Community Relations Director Sonya Abt said she has not had any inquiries about Bank of America’s properties at Harlem and Burlington, but called the sites “excellent opportunities for redevelopment.”

“Hopefully, we can work with the bank on marketing to get the best development possible,” Abt said.

Bank of America has been closing branches since the economic downturn in 2008. According to a July 2018 article on CNN’s website, Bank of America had 1,720 fewer branches than it had in June 2008, a 28 percent drop.

The bank had closed more than 100 branches in the year prior to July 2018, according to CNN.

As the Bank of America property prepares to go on the market, the village would like to see some action at the property immediately west of the bank’s parking lot, at 363-69 E. Burlington St., a twostory, brick, 1920s-era, mixed-use building once slated for development as a brew pub but now vacant and deteriorating.

Giuseppe Zappani, who had bought and restored the Arcade Building in downtown Riverside, purchased the East Burlington Street property in November 2014. At the time, 363-69 E. Burlington St. had been in foreclosure for four years and was not habitable when Zappani bought it.

The building’s condition has worsened since. Despite plans to turn the lower level into a brew pub and rehab the upstairs apartments, work at the site has long since stalled and the building’s windows remain boarded up while the exterior shows signs of further erosion.

On March 27, the village’s building inspector, Jose Rivera, sent a letter to Zappani detailing nine property maintenance violations that needed to be addressed. Failure to do by May 10 would trigger further action by the village, according to the letter, which the Landmark obtained via a Freedom of Information request.

The letter requests that Zappani install proper windows and doors, paint exterior wood surfaces, tuck-point the entire building, make repairs to the roof and the limestone above a deteriorating second-floor window, install handrails on rear staircases and remove debris from the rear yard.

D95 goes next door to find Brook Park K-2 principal Riverside schools’ technology specialist tapped for new position

Last week, the Brookfield-LaGrange Park District 95 Board of Education voted unanimously to hire 32-year-old Kelly King as the K-2 principal at Brook Park, the culmination of a search process that’s been ongoing since February.

King will have administrative responsibility for kindergarten through second grade while Principal Michael Sorensen will be responsible for grades three through five at Brook Park, which is expected to have an enrollment of nearly 900 students next year.

“The sheer size of the building and the number of staff members that are in the building, just the volume of work, cannot be done by one building principal,” said District 95 Superintendent Mark Kuzniewski.

For the past three years King has been the instructional technology specialist at neighboring Riverside Elementary School District 96, where she has worked to creatively use technology in the classroom and developed inquiry-based curriculum.

King’s strong background in technology made her stand out among the 60 applicants for the new position.

King worked for seven years in Indian Springs District 109 before being hired at District 96 three years ago. She began her career as a reading specialist then as a fifth-grade teacher at Brodnicki Elementary School in Justice.

King, whose mother was a long-time physical education teacher at Argo High School, grew up in Naperville and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Illinois State University.

She earned a master’s degree in educational leadership from the University of St. Francis in 2012. King thought she would become a lawyer until helping out in a second-grade classroom as part of a program her senior year of high school at Naperville Central.

King said that she will bring a collaborative approach to leadership to her new role.

“I think that building strong relationships with the staff and the students and the parents is really important,” King said.

“It’s sad to leave Riverside,” King added.

“I’ve loved my three years there, but I’m really excited about starting in District 95, too.”

The Riverside Elementary School District 96 Board of Education approved contract renewals and raises for administrators at its April 17 meeting.

Two principals and one assistant principal were given one-time merit awards because of the improvements at their schools in addition to the 3-percent raises all administrators received.

L.J. Hauser Principal April Mahy and Central School Principal Pete Gatz received merit bonuses of $2,500, while Hauser Assistant Principal Christine Mullin received a merit award of $1,500.

This is believed to be the first time, at least in recent years, that merit awards were given to administrators in District 96.

The merit bonuses to the Mahy, Mullin, and Gatz were given because of improvements in test scores on the PARCC exam at Hauser and Central.

“Central have Hauser have both outperformed the district averages,” said District 96 school board President Jeff Miller.

The percentage of Hauser students exceeding expectations on the English Language Arts portion of the PARCC exam more than doubled in 2018, rising to 23 percent in 2018 from only 11 percent in 2017.

Hauser students also did better in math last year, with the number of students exceeding expectations rising to 16 percent from 10 percent in 2017.

At Central School the percentage of students exceeding expectations in ELA rose to 19 percent in 2018, up from 12 percent in 2017. The percentage of Central students exceeding expectations in math also rose to 19 percent in 2018, up from 14 percent

in 2017.

The merit awards are one-time payments that are not incorporated into base salaries and are given at the discretion of the Board of Education.

All administrators in District 96, other than Superintendent Martha Ryan-Toye, will be on one-year contracts next year.

Mahy’s salary next year, not counting the one-time merit award she is receiving, will be $115,744. Gatz will make $117,763 and Mullin will make $82,220, not counting their merit awards.

The highest paid principal in District 96 will continue to be Ames Principal Todd Gierman who will make $122,251 next year.

Hollywood School Principal Kim Hefner will make $112,668 and Blythe Park Principal Casimira Gorman will make $107,469.

Also having their contracts renewed with 3-percent raises were Director of Special Education Pam Shaw, Director of Finance and Operations Jim Fitton, Technology director Don Tufano and Instructional Technology Coordinator Jason Smit.

Shaw will make $139,614 next year, Fitton $139,050, Tufano $134,522 and Smit $87,206.

Ryan Toye’s is finishing the first year of a new three-year contract she and the school board agreed to last year. Her evaluation is not yet quite finished, but Miller said Ryan-Toye will likely also get a 3-percent raise. She currently makes $188,000.

Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Merryl Brownlow is the only District 96 administrator who won’t be returning next year. She is leaving to become superintendent of Palos Heights District 128. Brownlow will be replaced by Angela Dolezal, currently the principal of Longfellow School in Oak Park, who will make $135,000 next year.

Although he lives in Crystal Lake, Andrew Freund Sr. is an attorney whose professional address is listed at 24 East Ave. in Riverside, a storefront in the Tower Apartments owned by a real estate trust.

Because of adjustments to insurance and late-in-career pay raises, the new contract is projected to cost the district an additional 2.1 percent a year compared to the expiring contract, according to a joint press release issued by the school board and the Riverside Brookfield Education Association (RBEA), the union that represents teachers and educational support personnel at the school.

With Superintendent Kevin Skinkis and the board keen to have a new contract in place before Principal Hector Freytas takes over on July 1, the board and the RBEA used a new technique called the interest-based negotiating model.

“It focuses more on … collaborative solutions instead of the traditional model, which is more on exchange of proposals back and forth and very time consuming and very cumbersome,” Skinkis said.

Bargaining began in February, and the deal was reached in just seven negotiating sessions, according to Skinkis.

Court records, citing the testimony of a doctor, stated Freund had been diagnosed with opioid and cocaine use disorders and that the drug use was related to his actions, which included a 2014 shoplifting conviction in McHenry County.

The court ordered Freund’s law license suspended for two years, but the discipline was suspended after 90 days on the condition that Freund continue with an addiction treatment program, participate in a 12-step program and undergo neuropsychological testing and evaluation.

Both Freund and Cunningham remain in custody at McHenry County Jail.

Employees who switch from the PPO health plan to the HMO plan will get a onetime bonus of $500 if they are on the single plan or $1,000 if they are on the family plan.

Employees and the district will split evenly any premium increase of greater than 5 percent.

The athletic coaching stipend schedule was restructured into a four-tier system based on seniority, instead of the current two-tier system. The most experienced coaches will receive stipend increases of about 8.5 percent.

“Coaching stipends were well below market value,” said Schultz, who coaches softball and golf.

The number of sick days was reduced from 19 to 15 for employees with five or more years of seniority. Employees who received a one-time grant of 180 to 360 sick days under former Superintendent/Principal Jack Baldermann more than a decade ago will have their annual sick day allotment reduced from 15 to 10.

Skinkis said that he was pleased with the contract and the process.

“The agreement is fair to both sides,” Skinkis said.

Right call at 8 Corners Lions honor Mateo with 2019 Jansky Award

B

rookfield trustees made the right decision on April 22, declining to introduce sweeping prohibitions against commercial uses that promote public assembly in the Eight Corners business district.

By a vote of 4 to 2, trustees rightly determined a good many uses that provide for assembly — art/music/dance instruction, live entertainment, cultural exhibits and daycare centers — bring people to the business district in support of retail businesses that already exist, as well as ones that may come to the commercial district in the future.

While some officials downplayed the wish to discourage religious assembly at Eight Corners in their attempt to amend the zoning code by outlawing all public assembly, fear of a church at Eight Corners was at the heart of the effort.

We get the reasoning: Eight Corners has been called out in the Brookfield Comprehensive Plan as a pedestrian-friendly commercial shopping district meant to attract retail stores and mixed-use development. A church doesn’t fit in with those plans.

But the village hasn’t given up its right to regulate zoning at Eight Corners with the passage on April 23 of an amended code that leaves public assembly and religious assembly in place as “special uses.”

The special-use process is a formal, open procedure through which both local government and local residents can vet such applications. Whether it’s a church, a community theater, or artist studio collective, no one will be granted permission for those uses simply by asking.

The community will be able to examine the impact such a use would have on the district — from traffic to parking to pedestrian safety. And the village, through the Planning and Zoning Commission, as well as the board of trustees itself, can impose conditions upon which approval will be granted.

You want a church at Eight Corners? You must demonstrate how it conforms to the comprehensive plan and benefits the business district, provides parking for congregants, affects traffic patterns, and parking for neighboring businesses.

This gives the village leverage to negotiate changes to plans.

With a TIF district in place at Eight Corners, the village is also in a position to offer incentives for development it prefers.

We reject the argument that by allowing uses that promote public assembly, you’re setting the stage for crowding out retail at Eight Corners. Retail already exists at Eight Corners and retailers who see the district as viable for their businesses are still welcome.

Also welcome, however, are the kinds of businesses that draw people to the district — places like Miss Clara’s Mini Musicians, a music instruction business that brings families to the area; Compassion Factory Art Gallery and Studio, which combines specialized retail sales as well as art instruction and family-oriented events; and ABC Learning Center, a daycare that provides a service so necessary to Brookfield families that they are looking to expand.

Those are the kinds of businesses you’ll see more and more in every town’s commercial districts for the simple reason that retail is dying. Pinning your future hopes on an obsolete model is misguided.

Seeking as much diversity in an unconventional commercial district like Eight Corners is necessary. As a result of the April 23 decision, that’s still possible.

Effort needed to curtail underage drinking Community-based drug prevention programs across the nation will be promoting alcohol awareness this month to increase public understanding of alcohol abuse and alcoholism. The Coalition for a Drug Free Lyons Township is actively working with schools, parents, teens and community members to address the underage drinking in our community.

Alcohol remains the No. 1 abused drug by teens. According to the 2018 Illinois Youth Survey, by senior year 79 percent of teens drink and 33 percent binge drink. Ninety percent get alcohol from parties and 42 percent from a parents unsecured liquor supply.

While some parents and guardians may feel relieved that their teen is “only” drinking, it is important to remember that early alcohol use can cause permanent damage to the still developing teen brain and can increase the risk of addiction. Those who drink before the age of 15 are at least four times more likely to have alcohol problems as adults than those who wait until at least age 21.

Alcohol reduces inhibitions and judgment that can lead to reckless decisions. This is especially a risk factor for teens

since the last area of the brain to develop impacts the ability to make safe judgments and decision making skills. The longer adolescents delay alcohol use, the less likely they are to develop any problems associated with it.

Research shows that brain development continues well into a person’s 20s. Alcohol can affect this development, causing youth to make irresponsible decisions, encounter memory lapses, or process and send neural impulses more slowly.

Underage drinking is a complex problem, requiring cooperation at all levels of our community. The issue of underage drinking is a complex problem, one that can only be solved through a sustained and cooperative effort between parents, schools, community leaders and teens.

Three areas have proven effective in prevention of underage drinking: curtailing the availability of alcohol, consistent enforcement of existing laws and regulations and changing attitudes and behaviors through education. Please join us in reducing underage drinking in our community.

Area losing some great cops to retirement This past week I learned about some of my closest colleagues’ retirements or pending retirements, and in one case, about the retirement of a police commander who has the respect of everyone in the west suburban area.

Brookfield Police Chief James Episcopo announced his retirement, as did North Riverside Police Chief Deborah Garcia, North Riverside Police Commander Dion Bobo, and LaGrange Park Police Chief Edward Rompa.

Each of these fine individuals are law enforcement professionals who were hired the same time as me, or closely thereafter.

I wanted the Landmark readership to know that we are definitely losing some excellent police professionals who are compassionate and kindhearted. They always put their residents first in the communities they served and strived to better their respective police agencies during their tenure.

I “grew up” with each of these special police leaders. When Jim Episcopo was appointed Brookfield police chief, he would call me to seek advice and I was honored to do so. I have known Jim for a long time and was very pleased to see him appointed police chief.

When Deborah Garcia was appointed police chief, I was thrilled about her promotion. It is very difficult to rise in a police department to any rank as a female officer, let alone police chief. Chief Garcia broke many barriers and always garnered the respect of her peers.

Commander Dion Bobo is just an all-around great guy and we will miss his smile and laughter. I used to work the street with Dion and he also had to overcome many obstacles. Commander Bobo was one of the first African-American police officers in the entire west suburban area. I used to work the midnight shift when he was working in North Riverside and we would talk often. His position of commander was quite an accomplishment and well-deserved.

Chief Ed Rompa is also a close friend and a true professional.

When Ed took over as police chief of LaGrange Park, we immediately met to share our knowledge of how we could better our departments. Chief Rompa always put his residents first and tried to obtain the best equipment and training for his officers that were available.

We are losing much institutional knowledge with the retirement of these remarkable officers. I congratulate them and will truly miss them, as I had dealings with these individuals at least once a week for the past 20 plus years.

New incoming Chief Ed Petrak of the Brookfield Police Department is most deserving of the top spot. I have worked with Ed on many occasions on various issues and can assure Brookfield residents that he is well respected by every top police administrator in the entire western suburbs.

Ed will transition into his new position seamlessly and will definitely enhance not only the image, but the day-to-day operations of Brookfield Police Department.

While the North Riverside and La Grange Park chiefs have not yet been named (as of April 25), when the announcement is made, my officers and I will assist them in any way we can.

In this day and age, mutual aid is not just something we agree to but something we must do. Sharing police services, training, equipment and consolidated dispatch is absolutely beneficial to every resident as well as to our police officers. I pledge to work with the new leadership in all these communities to ensure that we deliver the best police services regionally to our individual municipalities.

Jim, Debbie, Dion and Ed, thank you for your service and guidance that you gave me over the years. Chief Petrak, I look forward to working with you in the future and you always have my full support.

Rev. David Dowdle, 65 Former St. John of the Cross pastor Rev. David P. Dowdle, 65, senior priest and former pastor at St. John of the Cross Parish in Western Springs, died on April 18, 2019. Born on Nov. 22, 1953, in Chicago, he attended St. Bernardine School in Forest Park and Quigley Preparatory Seminary in Chicago.

He earned a bachelor’s degree from Niles College Seminary of Loyola University and a Bachelor of Sacred Theology from the University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary in Mundelein in 1977.

Ordained to the priesthood on May 9, 1979, by John Cardinal Cody, archbishop of Chicago, he celebrated his first solemn Mass at St. Bernardine Catholic Church in Forest Park on May 19 of the same year.

Following his ordination, he served as associate pastor at St. Marcelline Parish in Schaumburg, St. Mary of Celle Parish in Berwyn, and Our Lady of PerpetREV. DAVID DOWDLE ual Help Parish in Glenview.

He was appointed pastor of St. Gall Parish on 55th Street in Chicago in 1992 and served in that role until 2000, when he became director of spiritual formation for the Institute for Diaconal Studies (then called the Deacon Formation Program).

In that role, he oversaw the spiritual formation component of the training and supervised the spiritual directors who accompanied the men and their wives during formation.

Visitation was on April 26 and on April 27, followed by a funeral Mass at St. John of the Cross Parish.

Thomas Flood, 68 Retired police officer, funeral director Thomas J. Flood, 68, of Riverside, died on April 20, 2019.

He was a retired Chicago police officer and a retired funeral director.

Mr. Flood was the husband of Jean (nee Moran); stepfather of Cora, Camille and Thomas Di Monte; the grandfather of 12; the son of the late Edward and Isabella Flood; the brother of the Honorable Lawrence Flood and James (Cheryl) Flood; and the cousin and friend to many.

Services were held at St. Mary Church, Riverside on Saturday, April 27 followed by private interment.

Arrangements were handled by The Original Kuratko Family, Brian D. Kuratko, director.

Jeffery Kunz, 70 Healthcare administrator

JEFFERY KUNZ

Jeffery Robert Melius Kunz, 70, died on Monday, April 1, 2019.

Born in Milwaukee on Jan. 6, 1949, he was raised in Riverside and graduated from Riverside-Brookfield High School.

He attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison for his undergraduate degree and while there not only received high academic honors, but also was active in student government and numerous student organizations including

the fraternity Sigma Phi and the student union.

He continued his studies at Wisconsin, obtaining both a doctorate in medicine and a master’s degree in administration. Throughout his studies, Mr. Kunz was awarded numerous academic scholarships including the Brittingham Viking Organization’s Reverse Viking Scholarship at the University of Oslo and the Marshall Scholarship.

He completed his medical residency at Northwestern University in Chicago. This led to a successful career in healthcare including roles in higher education, public health, government, journalism and administration.

Some of his notable achievements were being awarded the first Morris Fishbein Fellowship in Medical Journalism at JAMA and receiving best seller awards for three American Medical books. In addition, he was a cabinet member for Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson.

Mr. Kunz was passionate about his community and alma mater, and he remained highly active in the Brittingham Viking Organization, Madison, Sigma Phi and Wisconsin Union Trustees.

He was a lifetime learner who loved to travel and spend time at his lake home in Northern Wisconsin.

Mr. Kunz was the son of the late Valerie (nee Melius) and the late Robert Kunz; husband of Lawren; the father of Kristin (Adam) Kunz-Schinke, Karin (Benjamin) Conklin and Kathrin (Matthew) Fernholz; the grandfather of five granddaughters; and the brother of Candace (Joseph) Rizzi and Erik (Maureen) Kunz.

A memorial service has been held, and the family appreciates contributions made in his honor to the Bradley Sigma Phi Historical Landmark Preservation Fund.

Richard Olmstead, 69 Vietnam veteran Richard S. Olmstead, 69, of North Riverside, died on April 22, 2019.

Born on Nov. 15, 1949 in Cicero, he was a retired engineer who had served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Mr. Olmstead was the husband of Claudia (nee Zavislak); the stepfather of Michael (Amanda) Madick and Sam (Jenny) Williamson; the step-grandfather of Joey, Abby and Zachary; and a brother and uncle to many.

Visitation is on Sunday, May 5 from noon to 3 p.m. at Kuratko-Nosek Funeral Home, 2447 Desplaines Ave. in North Riverside followed by a memorial service with military honors at 2:30 p.m.

Sky’s the limit for RBHS volleyball High-flying Bulldogs appear primed for a big finish this season

here’s no doubt that the Riverside-Brookfield High School boys volleyball team will enter the state playoffs well prepared. At 17-7 overall with a 3-1 record in the Metro Suburban Conference, the Bulldogs have mixed it up against several of the state’s best teams this season.

RBHS has notable wins over New Trier and Hinsdale Central, but has also lost close matches against contenders Lincoln-Way West, defending state champion Lincoln-Way East, Deerfield and Oak Park and River Forest.

At invites, the Bulldogs won four of five matches to finish second at Joliet West and placed fourth at Warren.

“We have had some ups and downs this year, highlighted by some big wins and tough losses against highly regarded opponents,” RBHS coach Dan Bonarigo said. “We’ve gotten through the busiest portion of our season, but we still have 11 regular season matches to play. Our hope is to earn a top seed in our sectional, win a regional championship and compete for our first sectional championship.”

Senior outside hitters DJ Degand and Colby Campbell lead the offense out of both the front and back row.

Degand, who has committed to Missouri Baptist University, has 162 kills, 19 aces, 95 digs and 24 blocks, while the Millikin University-bound Campbell has 133 kills, 61 blocks and a .279 hitting percentage this season.

“DJ is one of our co-captains and a steady passer and defender,” Bonarigo said. “Colby is an intimidating presence at the net and takes pride in his blocking. He is probably one of the most fundamentally sound blockers we’ve ever

Several other upperclassmen have contributed heavily to the team’s success.

Junior outside hitter Vejas Cuplinskas (174 kills, 84 digs) is a powerful hitter who has shown steady improvement, while senior libero Lucas Reilley (125 digs) brings leadership and poise to the court.

Bonarigo also praised the efforts of junior setter Jonah Raith (461 assists, 79 digs), senior opposite side hitter Matt Lams (39 kills, 43 digs) and junior middle hitter Matt Hansen (68 kills, 30 blocks). Lams will play college volleyball at Concordia University in River Forest.

“After starting the entire year as a sophomore, Jonah has continued to improve this year,” Bonarigo said. “Matt Lams has a great attitude and work ethic. He pushes the team to work hard and improve every day. Matt Hansen has taken on the role of middle hitter quite well. On a team with excellent hitters at every position, he continues to be a steady force at

the net and improves daily.”

With such a talented lineup, optimism is understandably high for the rest of the season.

“My expectations are for us to break the school’s record from my sophomore season of 30 wins and to win the conference championship in our first season in the conference,” Degand said. “I think if we keep our eyes on the prize and stay focused, nothing can stop us from achieving greatness.”

Campbell added: “The sky is the limit for us. We all connect on a level which makes this team elite among the others in state. Our goal is to make a run into the playoffs and hopefully go all the way, but we have to take it one step at a time.”

In a recent match on April 25, the Bulldogs lost 25-23, 19-25, 25-20 against host OPRF in the area rivals’ annual nonconference match.

Kuplinskas led RBHS with 11 kills, while Campbell and Degand had eight apiece against OPRF. Raith dished out 29 assists and Reilley led the Bulldogs defensively with nine digs.

“The Oak Park match featured a lot of great rallies and big kills from both sides of the net,” Bonarigo said. “Our team had 110 hitting attempts, which speaks to a lot of long rallies and great defense. The match could have gone either way, but we came up on the short end against a great team.”

Bulldog tennis builds for future

Weiss encouraging steady improvement, year-round play for players

The Riverside-Brookfield High School boys tennis team has shown immediate signs of progress under new head coach Sam Weiss. After dropping their season opener at Willowbrook, the Bulldogs responded with three straight wins against Bolingbrook, Shepard and Lemont.

More importantly, with 10 varsity players and 33 overall in the program, Weiss appears to have numbers he can work with in terms of building a sustainable and hopefully successful program. Of course, part of the game plan will call for patience.

“We want to continue to improve our kids’ skills,” Weiss said. “About 90 percent of the kids who play tennis at RB start [playing] their freshman year, so we want them to continue practicing during the offseason and participating in developmental camps over the summer.”

Senior captain Will Dowling is the No. 1 singles player. He’s recorded a pair of runner-up finishes at tour-

neys this spring.

“Will is just a great all-around player who has been playing tennis his whole life,” Weiss said. “He puts a lot of spin on the ball and uses technique instead of power to win his matches. He analyzes an opponent’s playing style and adapts in order to win.”

Freshman Stephen Berger, who also plays golf at RBHS, holds down the second singles spot.

“Stephen has the biggest potential on the team,” Weiss said. “He’s an incredible young player with a great attitude. He’s always joking and smiling, but he’s a lethal teddy bear. I say this because he’s the shortest kid on the team and looks like he’s 10.

“He’s just a solid all-around player with really no faults. The only area he needs help with is increasing speed and size.”

Senior Neil Styx also competes in singles, while Alex Mercado is a top doubles player.

“Neil is fundamentally sound and particularly effective at net with his aggressive play,” Weiss said. “Alex is a

very quick and agile player. He prefers to keep the ball in play and also capitalize at the net when opponents make a mistake. Nothing gets past Alex.”

A pair of first-year players, junior Dylan Meehan and freshman Owen Leander, have played second doubles together.

“Dylan is a multi-sport athlete with the aggressiveness of a tiger,” Weiss said. “Owen is like clockwork.

He has great technique that will help him blossom into a very successful player.”

James Berger, Rowan Elwart, Rokas Lukosevicius and Nicholas Sacharski comprise the rest of the varsity roster.

“Our kids are improving each day and have great determination and drive,” Weiss said. “We have increased our offensive play.”

RBHS hosts St. Francis on Thursday, May 2. Matches start at 4:30 p.m.

After facing the Spartans, the Bulldogs’ remaining home matches are against Nazareth Academy (Tuesday, May 7) and St. Edward (Wednesday, May 8), which also begin at 4:30.

Fenwick tops Trinity in softball Trailing 3-0, Friars respond with superb defense, pitching and nine runs

The high school sports rivalry between Fenwick and Oak Park and River Forest is well known. However, the Friars’ athletic battles with neighboring Trinity are often comparably intense, perhaps even more given the teams’ common conference affiliation in the Girls Catholic Athletic Conference.

In the latest installment of the rivalry, the Friars earned a 9-3 comeback win against Trinity at Triton College on April 25. Trailing 3-0, Fenwick responded with excellent defense, pitching and hitting to score nine unanswered runs en route to victory.

“It took a full team effort to come from behind, take and the lead, and then add on to it,” Fenwick coach Sarah James said. “In our six losses, the mindset was to play not to lose which just doesn’t work.

We needed to turn that (mindset) into play to win.

We had an opportunity to play under pressure and responded well.”

Fenwick senior pitcher Cassy Lee added: “Trinity has always been one of our biggest rivals and toughest competitors so we are always hyped to play against them. Trinity started off very strong, but we were ultimately able to come back and work togeth-

er as a team to score runs for the win.”

During one notable play, Vaccaro made a diving stop to her left and then threw to first for an out, ending a Blazers’ scoring opportunity with runners on second and third. Martinez, a University of Southern Indiana commit, flashed a reliable glove and made several diving plays to keep balls in the infield.

In recent games, designated player Alex Medina and catcher Tess LoGuidice have contributed as well for Fenwick. Medina has created a lot of scoring opportunities with her slap-hitting style, while LoGuidice has been consistent behind the plate and at bat.

The pitching staff has also played a large role in the team’s success this season. The rotation is led by strikeout pitchers Alyssa Stramaglia and Lee. The Friars have also shown resiliency this spring by staying together during a brief slump.
