oanne Schaeffer, the longtime member of the LyonsBrookfield District 103 school board, says not only will she remain on the board, but she may run again for re-election in two years, after what she said was a ploy last week to get her to resign.

With the election of three candidates -- incumbent Sharon Anderson and newcomers Shannon Johnson and Margaret Hubacek -- on April 4, the board majority is about to flip from one under the heavy influence of Lyons Village President Christopher Getty to a bloc of political independents.

And with new board members set to be sworn in on April 27, it appears a final bid was made to keep the majority under village hall control by attempting to embarrass Schaeffer by disseminating provocative photos of a relative in an advertisement offering massage services posted on the website Backpage.com.

In the April 11 incident, the bank teller reportedly recognized Briggins as he approached the counter. The teller made a noise, alerting the branch manager, who confronted him.

“Are you serious?” the branch manager reportedly told Briggins, who handed the teller a note while talking on his cellphone and said, “Let’s make this quick.”

When the teller handed Briggins $50 and $100 bills, he reportedly asked for more money.

When the teller said there was no more cash, Briggins reportedly demanded more money.

The teller then handed over two more $100 bills, according to the complaint, which was filed in U.S. District Court on April 12.

Police recovered the cash from a female passenger in Briggins’ car. Briggins reportedly asked the woman to go inside the store first to see how busy the bank was and then gave her the cash as police pulled over the getaway car.

It’s unclear from the complaint whether the female was charged with a crime.

Skinkis and Smetana declined to say whether Musil is being paid while she is on leave or to comment on her status.

The decision not to rehire Musil emerged as an issue in the April 4 school board election in which the two incumbents running for re-election were both defeated.

“The people of the Riverside-Brookfield area have spoken for who they want, that’s been made clear,” said Musil, a resident of Brookfield.

The village of Brookfield has filed an application seeking $175,000 through a Cook County grant program to study the feasibility of installing left turn-only lanes on 31st Street at Maple Avenue and building a bike/ pedestrian path along 31st Street between Prairie Avenue and First Avenue.

Officials are seeking the funding through the Invest in Cook program, which is administered through the Cook County Department of Transportation and Highways.

Cook County earmarked $8.5 million early this year for the grant program to help pay some of the costs related to planning for regional and local transportation improvements.

Calling 31st Street “a transit desert,” Brookfield officials in their application said the proposed improvements would address three issues: connecting visitors to Brookfield Zoo, providing a safe route for Brookfield residents to the zoo without having to drive a car and providing access to the Salt Creek Trail.

According to the application, thousands of Brookfield residents are members of Brookfield Zoo, but many are unable to walk or bike safely to the zoo. The lack of a safe route along 31st Street also may discourage residents without access to a vehicle from applying for jobs at the zoo.

“The almost 19,000 residents of Brookfield lack a safe way to access the zoo unless they are able to drive there,” the application states.

The path between Prairie Avenue and First Avenue would connect not only with the Salt Creek Trail on the north side of 31st

Street but to the new First Avenue trail that links Riverside-Brookfield High School and the village of North Riverside at 26th Street.

The Cook County Forest Preserve District played an instrumental role in funding the First Avenue trail, along with the villages of Riverside and North Riverside and Riverside-Brookfield High School District 208.

“These trails are great amenities that connect residents to nature and healthy activities,” the application states. “The Cook County Forest Preserves has discussed this connectivity issue with the village and is eager to find a solution to the lack of access to [the] eastern section of the trail.”

If the village is successful in obtaining the grant, it would only pay for a planning/feasibility study. It’s unclear how the village or county might combine to fund engineering, design and construction. The application estimates construction taking place in 2021.

“It is a very competitive grant and there is no guarantee we will get it,” said Emily Egan, Brookfield’s village planner, in an email.

In its application, Brookfield included 15 letters of support from local officials and regional agencies, including Friends of the Forest Preserves and Cook County Commissioner Jeffrey Tobolski, whose support for the First Avenue bike path was critical; state Rep. Michael Zalewski (D-Riverside), Brookfield Zoo, the Active Transportation Alliance, Trails for Illinois, Pace bus company, the Central Council of Mayors and the village of LaGrange Park.

Municipalities and other government agencies whose projects are approved for grant funding will be notified of the awards in August.

Businesses win inaugural ‘Brookie’ awards

Four Brookfield businesses have been recognized for beautifying their properties with “Brookie” awards, established this year by the Brookfield Beautification Commission “to encourage businesses to continually make visual improvements to their property and/or store thus attracting more customers to the village,” according to a press release from the commission last week.

The commission announced it would recognize business beautification annually.

Each winner of a “Brookie” was given a framed certificate along with a brownie-

cookie combination dessert.

The 2016 Brookie winners were Mary’s Morning Mix-Up, for creative interior; Paisan’s Pizzeria, for improved façade; Brennan Massage and Spa, for attractive landscaping; and Laura Atwood Studio Beads and Trading Co., for appealing window display.

“We hope that this recognition process will bring pride to our businesses and offer ideas and encouragement to our other establishments,” the commission’s press release stated.

Brookfield jumpstarts tree, stump removals Up to 250 trees could come down this year

All of those tree stumps on Brookfield parkways, the result of the removal of scores of ash trees due to the emerald ash borer infestation, will be ground down this spring and up to 250 more trees will be removed this year by a combination of public works employees and private contractors.

Last week, crews from Homer Tree Care started taking down 89 trees – the number could go up to 100, said Public Works Director Kenneth Blaauw – that were included in a $48,522 tree removal contract awarded by the Brookfield Village Board in late March.

All of the trees being removed by Homer Tree Care are either located on collector routes, such as Maple Avenue, Prairie Avenue, Grand Boulevard and Washington Avenue, or are located near power lines.

The company will grind down the stumps of those 89 trees in addition to another 200 stumps scattered around the village.

Original estimates pegged the work at about $98,000, but Lockport-based Homer Tree Care swept in with a bid about half that total, beating out three other bidders. Neither of the tree services located in Brookfield bid on the project, according to Village Manager Keith Sbiral.

Blaauw said Homer Tree Care is the largest

tree removal company in the Chicago area and likely bid on the Brookfield project due to a lack of work this year through the Illinois Department of Transportation and the Illinois tollway system.

“They have a certain number of people that they like to keep busy, and this project fit their schedule,” Blaauw told the village board on March 27.

According to Blaauw the number of trees Homer Tree Care removes could increase after the village’s arborist evaluates the parkway tree stock once trees begin leafing out in May. Another 50 trees are expected to be removed from public parkways of streets that are scheduled to be repaired this summer, Blaauw said, and up to 100 more trees will be taken down by public works employees.

This year’s tree removal program should take care of almost all of the trees in need of removal due to the ash borer infestation.

In 2013, the village’s public works director at that time stated that Brookfield’s 1,300 ash trees comprised about 15 percent of the village public tree stock. Not all of the village’s ash trees have succumbed to the ash borer. There are some species of ash trees, the blue ash in particular, that appear to be more resistant than others.

Residents wishing to have a new tree planted on the parkway in front of their homes can do so by requesting to be included in the village’s 50/50 tree replacement program.

Participation in the program costs $200.

Brookfield residents invited to planning workshop The village of Brookfield will host its first public comprehensive planning workshop in order to gain resident input to help set village planning policy for the future. The workshop will be held Wednesday, April 26 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the council chamber of the Brookfield Village Hall, 8820 Brookfield Ave. The session will be moderated by consultants from Ratio Design, the firm chosen by the Brookfield and the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning to lead the comprehensive planning process, the first for Brookfield in more than a decade.

According to Lesley Roth, senior urban planner for Ratio Design, residents attending the workshop will learn about the planning process and then take part in interactive sessions where they’ll discuss what they envision for Brookfield’s future, laying out goals and objectives and celebrating past planning successes.

Other sessions at the workshop will focus on specific areas of the village, like Eight Corners

and the downtown area to find out what residents would like to see happen in those places.

“We want to hear all of it,” said Roth. “We’re the technical experts with regard to planning, but community residents are the experts on the community. There has to be buy-in in order to make this work.”

Results of the workshop will be posted on a website that’s been created for the Brookfield comprehensive planning process, which can be found at www.ratiodesign.com/brookfieldcp.

An existing conditions report, based on earlier work by Ratio Design is already on the website and may be helpful for those who want to attend the public workshop on April 26.

There will be a second public workshop in the fall after Ratio Design completes a draft version of the comprehensive plan. The process will conclude in early 2018 when a final comprehensive planning document is adopted by the Brookfield Village Board.

Lionel Road residents: don’t make traffic worse Recommendation to make street a collector route causes concern

The firm tasked by Riverside officials to complete a village-wide traffic survey has issued its draft report, which includes at least one recommendation that has residents of Lionel Road, in the southeast corner of the village, edgy.

The study recommends reclassifying a stretch of roadway that includes Riverside Road, Miller Road and Lionel Road as a collector route. The designation is used for streets designed to move traffic efficiently through the village.

Residents will get a chance to speak up on the recommendations in the draft report, which has been posted on the village of Riverside’s website, at the village board meeting on April 20 at 7 p.m. In the past month, however, Lionel Road residents have already made their feelings known to village officials.

In short, residents fear reclassifying the street as a collector route will make traffic even worse in the neighborhood.

“I’ve seen an ever-increasing flow of traffic, from a steady stream to what is now, basically, a flood at rush hour, both a.m. and

p.m.,” said Martin O’Connor, a resident of Lionel Road for 18 years.

O’Connor said there is “a regular and pervasive disregard” for speed limits and the stop sign at Delaplaine and Lionel. Motorists also disregard the sign at Ogden and Lionel, which prohibits turns onto the street from Ogden Avenue during rush hours, O’Connor said.

“It’s an issue of quality of life for everybody that lives on Lionel Road,” said O’Connor, who was accompanied at the village board’s April 6 meeting by a half dozen or so Lionel Road neighbors. “It’s a residential street, and I’d like to see it remain that way.”

Other collector routes in Riverside include Woodside Road, Desplaines Avenue, Longcommon Road, East Quincy Street and East Burlington Street.

Right now the Riverside Road/Miller Road/Lionel Road stretch is classified as a local road, which are roads that typically carry lower volumes of traffic. The report also recommends reclassifying Delaplaine Road, which arcs across the north and eastern part of Riverside, from a local road to a collector route. Delaplaine Road ends at Lionel Road, which then becomes either a

point of egress to or ingress from Ogden Avenue.

According to Michael Werthmann of KLOA Inc., the company that performed the traffic study, reclassifying Riverside/ Miller/Lionel and Delaplaine roads as collectors is simply a recognition of a reality that already exists.

Motorists do use those routes to get through the village, particularly during rush hours. Traffic counts the company did as part of the study confirmed the existence of higher traffic counts along those roads.

But residents worry the reclassification could make the situation worse, especially if GPS systems handle those streets differently.

“Will navigation systems all of a sudden start sending people down Lionel because it’s now not a residential street?” asked Erin Calabrese, another Lionel Road resident.

According to Calabrese, 40 percent of the homes on her block have children age 6 and under.

Sandra Vega, who also has young children and lives on Lionel Road, said the traffic is a safety issue. Her kids like to

play basketball in the driveway of her home and she parks a vehicle in front of the entrance to prevent the ball from rolling into the street.

“I, like everybody else, want less traffic let alone, God forbid, you redesignate the street and we have more traffic,” Vega said.

Other recommendations in the traffic study call for adding 14 new all-way stop intersections and installing stop or yield signs in 30 locations where intersections have no traffic control at all.

The study recommends maintaining a blanket speed limit of 25 mph but to install signage for 20 mph park speed zones, which the village created a decade ago and never implemented.

As D103 board shifts, key personnel get new deals Administrators get new contracts or extensions

In a parting shot, the majority of the Lyons School District 103 Board of Education, who are aligned with Lyons Village President Christopher Getty, gave one-year contract extensions to most of the administrators in the school district at a special meeting held April 13.

After meeting in closed session for about two hours, the school board voted 5 to 2 to approve new or amended contracts for Superintendent Carol Baker, Curriculum Director Natacia Campbell, Director of Student Services Janine Gruhn, Maintenance Director Ryan Grace and Director of Technology John Williamsen.

The vote came just two weeks before newly elected school board members Marge Hubacek and Shannon Johnson are sworn in.

Hubacek and Johnson are expected to ally with incumbents Sharon Anderson Joanne Schaeffer to form a new majority. Anderson, Hubacek and Johnson triumphed at the polls on April 4, defeating incumbents Katie Broderick and Kendra Pierce and newcomer Olivia Quintero.

“Those actions tonight showed exactly why a change was needed,” said Anderson, who joined Schaeffer in voting against the new contracts.

Also getting new contracts were all the principals and assistant principals in the district as well as Baker’s secretary, Charline Latronica.

Hubacek, who worked as secretary to the superintendent for 10 years before retiring two years ago said that she never had a con-

At the meeting, according to Schaeffer, Baker showed her an advertisement featuring photos of Schaeffer’s 26-year-old granddaughter, dressed in black lingerie and posing provocatively.

The Landmark obtained a link to the ad from someone other than Schaeffer or Baker. Schaeffer confirmed the photos were authentic but said her granddaughter didn’t post the ad. The photos, Schaeffer said, were posted to Facebook by her granddaughter.

At the school board meeting that evening, Baker reportedly offered the copies of the ad and photos to board members. All the board members took the photos except for Sharon Anderson.

Anderson, Hubacek, Johnson and Schaeffer made clear prior to the election that they don’t have confidence in Baker and many other top district administrators. Giving new contracts to administrators will make it harder for the new board majority to remove them.

Baker’s contract was extended one more year to 2020. All the other administrators were given new one-year contracts and all the administrators received 3-percent raises, Baker said.

There was no change to the contract of Assistant Superintendent Kyle Hastings, whose part-time contract expires in 2020.

Human Relations Director Marty Stack also did not receive a new contract.

The board members who voted in favor of the new contracts declined to comment after the meeting.

Schaeffer said that Baker’s new contract omitted a clause in her old contract that required her the pay the cost of a superintendent search if she voluntarily left her job before her contract expires.

Schaeffer said that the board had not discussed new administrator contracts before the closed session Thursday evening.

Schaeffer said that she believes Baker showed off the ad in an attempt to induce her to resign from the school board, although Baker never said anything about resigning to her. If Schaeffer were to resign from the board before the new members are seated on April 27, the current Getty-aligned majority could choose a replacement and retain a 4-3 board majority for the next two years.

Schaeffer said she was outraged by Baker presenting the ad and the photos to the board and said she has no intention of quitting.

“I’m not quitting, I’m not going anywhere,” Schaeffer said. “The fact of it is I’m going to run again, that’s just the way it is.

That’s how mad they have me.

“I take it as a threat and I take it as a political ploy. This is politics at its worst. This is politics, this is payback.”

Baker wasn’t saying much about the situation, but she did confirm calling in Schaef-

fer for a private meeting last week.

“I shared some information with her,” Baker said. “The situation was discussed in closed session and it could pertain to a legal matter, so unfortunately I cannot comment further about this at this time.”

Baker later emailed a statement to the Landmark, saying it was unfortunate that a matter discussed in closed session by the school board was made public.

“I don’t bring every rumor to the board,” Baker stated. “Only concerns that, after investigating, I believe could result in a safety, fiscal, or legal issue. It is my job to investigate and work in concert with our lawyers and staff to make the determination if an issue needs to be brought to the board. These investigations are kept as confidential as possible and when shared with the board, it is done in closed session.

“It is unfortunate that the board member connected to this situation chose to make a statement in public,” Baker added. “It was my desire to keep this as confidential as possible so that the board and its attorneys can best determine how to move forward in pro-

tecting the students and staff and upholding the integrity of the entire district.”

After meeting with Baker on April 13, Schaeffer said she immediately contacted a lawyer.

Anderson said the matter was only discussed in general terms in closed session.

“We didn’t go into a lot of depth,” Anderson said. “From what I understand it has nothing to do with Joanne, it has nothing to do with the school district, it has nothing to do with the school board. It’s just them playing dirty pool and it’s a shame. It’s a shame and to me it just shows how desperately they’re trying to hold on to something.”

Schaeffer, who was emotional and almost trembling when she made a public statement at the end of the April 13 school board meeting, says she plans to run for another term on the school board when her term expires in two years.

“It made me more determined,” Schaeffer said. “I actually was thinking about not running in two years. I’m old, but let me tell you it gave me adrenaline. I’m running. You bet I will.”

North Riverside gym seeks budding ninjas Flipside Academy bundles fitness, parkour for youths, adults

From sports leagues to art classes and everything in between, local recreation departments really keep residents of all ages busy.

But not if you’re an aspiring ninja. That’s where the new Flipside Academy of Movement in North Riverside -- a facility dedicated to free running, parkour and ninja warrior play -- comes in.

Over the past several years, thanks to rise of popularity in TV’s “American Ninja Warrior” and YouTube videos about parkour — an acrobatic practice first developed in Europe during the late 1980s from military obstacle training courses and honing acrobatic stunts in the public sphere — urban acrobat Paul Canada decided opening a parkour facility in town was just was locals with tons of energy would crave.

Located at 7918 26th St. in North Riverside — a site which has seen grocery stores come and go for years — Flipside Academy of Movement offers a one-of-a-kind indoor fitness venue filled with fun, safe and challenging equipment designed as an outlet for high-energy and social growth learning.

Canada brings his business to North Riverside after a three-year stint in Forest Park in the 1500 block of Circle Avenue.

At the gym, visitors will find cushioned gymnastics mats, ladders suspended from the ceiling and sophisticated jungle gyms complete with wooden planks and rock climbing aspects.

“We just create different challenges, so when [guests] first come to class, they’ll come in and check out the environment,” Canada said. “Then, we’ll pull them together and do a group warm-up and then we set up stations for them. Coaches create challenges and teach them how to do that course [and] conditioning and stretching at the end.”

With an extensive background in acrobatics and fitness, Canada, who spent his early adult years after college working as an acrobatics coach with the Ringling Brothers Circus, brings other experiences to the table, including working as a professional acrobat with the Indiana Pacers, as a personal trainer for adults and youth program director with after school programs on the West Side of Chicago.

According to Canada, 20 percent of profits from the business funds Flipside Acrobats in Chicago’s Austin neighborhood. The group, for which Canada is the head coach, mentors young men and showcases their acrobatic talents across Chicagoland.

Canada said his goal for Flipside Academy in North Riverside is to give kids the chance to explore fun obstacle environments that will not only challenge them safely but also help build their confidence.

We try to create a different challenge every week, and in some ways, it doesn’t matter how you get over the object, but we want you to get over it in a safe way.”

their athletic skill levels. Younger children are in groups of eight per instructor and older children are taught in groups no larger than 12 participants.

“It’s not about how big of a jump this kid will make or if they’ll be a parkour athlete,” Canada said. “Our goal is movement, confi-

dence, physical development and youth development. We have a lot of kids that don’t fit in at other places; this is their place to belong. To see them come to a place where they fit, that’s encouraging.”

A Brookfield business owner charged with selling cannabis wax out of a back room of a Burlington Avenue storefront waived his preliminary hearing on April 10 and was sentenced to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Drug Abuse Program, more commonly known as “drug school,” a spokeswoman for the state’s attorney’s office has confirmed.

Shawn M. Odneal, 41, who operates Root 66 Aquaponic Garden Shop at 8863 Burlington Ave., was arrested by Riverside police on March 16 at the store along with an employee named James W. Wright, 51, of Lyons.

Both men were charged with felony manufacture and delivery of cannabis. At a hearing in front of Judge Pamela Leeming at the Maybrook courthouse on April 10, Wright pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of cannabis possession and was sentenced to two days in jail/time served.

Odneal, a Brookfield resident, will have charges against him dismissed as long as he completes the court’s drug program, which will require him to attend classes.

If he completes the classes without being charged in the meantime, prosecutors will dismiss the charges. According to the state’s attorney’s office, Odneal’s next status hearing is July 10.

Drug school often is offered in Cook County as an alternative to criminal prosecution to adults who have been charged with drug possession (misdemeanor or felony) but who have no prior history of dealing drugs or violence and have no prior felony convictions.

In a post on the Root 66 Facebook page after the court hearing, Odneal declared his troubles at an end.

“Case closed and all charges dropped today!!! (As expected) ... But having said that, I sincerely apologize for the embarrassing event we all had to endure,” Odneal wrote.

In the meantime, Odneal has started an online GoFundMe campaign, hoping to raise $8,000.

“We’re being forced to move out of Brookfield and clear my name of some wrongful allegations,” Odneal wrote in his plea to donors. “But once this has passed we’ll begin to rebuild. So now we are asking your support to regain our honor and continue helping educate the public about

living happy and healthy.”

Odneal started the fundraising campaign on April 4. By April 18, five donors had come through with $550.

In addition to thanking customers for their support, Odneal also apologized to village residents and his landlord, Martin Lynch, who owns the storefront as well as Irish Times to the west and the former Cock Robin property to the east.

“Apologizes to all the citizens of Brookfield and my landlord Martin Lynch Irish Times for the fiasco, hope it didn’t disturb St Paddies lunch too much ... my apologies to the Riverside and Brookfield PD’ s,” he wrote.

Attempts by the Landmark to reach Odneal by phone at Root 66 were unsuccessful.

In early April, Lynch confirmed to the Landmark that he was not renewing Root 66’s lease, which expires April 30 Lynch said he didn’t have another tenant ready to take over the space. However, Lynch did reveal that he’s been working with an architect to see whether it might be possible to build a new mixed-use development, one that conforms to the village’s new Station Area zoning code.

Carjacking investigation leads to Riverside man

A Riverside man has been charged with possession of a stolen motor vehicle for his alleged role in a pair of carjacking incidents reported in Elmhurst and Westchester on April 5.

Shane Pearson, 24, was arrested as he left a residence in the 200 block of East Burlington St. on April 7.

Police had the home under surveillance and took Pearson into custody after he placed a small child into his vehicle. Officers also reported finding a gun in the vehicle. Meanwhile, police reported that a vehicle involved in the April 5 carjackings, a 2003 Ford Fusion, was found in the driveway of the Riverside residence.

Pearson is being held at Cook County Jail with his bond set at $100,000. Arrested separately on April 10 was Kenneth Manning, 21, of Chicago. He has been charged with one count of aggravated vehicular hijacking with a firearm. He’s being held on $1 million bond at Cook County Jail.

According to the Chicago Tribune, a Westchester man said he was walking to his vehicle, a 2011 Infiniti Q56, about 10:20 a.m. on April 5 in the 2400 block of Wellington Avenue when he was approached by a man with a gun who demanded the keys.

The offender drove away in the Infiniti, which was followed by a silver Ford Fusion.

Earlier that morning, an Elmhurst woman reported being confronted by a man as she pulled her Cadillac Escalade into her garage.

She immediately backed out and pulled away, foiling the hijacking attempt, according to the Tribune report.

She reported that the man, who was armed with a handgun, drove off in a vehicle described as possibly a Ford Fusion.

Telephone fraud The neighbor of a 77-year-old Brookfield woman contacted police on April 10 to report that the elderly woman may have been defrauded by a telephone solicitor.

According to the police report, the elderly victim told her neighbor she’d received a phone call from someone informing her that her computer was broken and that he could repair it for $200.

The man asked for the victim’s checking account and check routing numbers, which she gave to the man over the phone. After learning that the victim’s bank account couldn’t be closed over the phone, police advised the victim to go to the bank the following morning and advise them on what happened.

Jumped in the alley A 48-year-old Lyons man was beaten during an incident on April 15 around 12:30 a.m. in an alley between Prairie and Forest avenues just north of Ogden Avenue.

The victim went to police about three and a half hours after he said he was jumped in the alley by four people, three of whom exited a black pickup truck that had followed him from Phil’s Sports Bar and Grill, where he’d won $400 gambling.

The victim at first appeared unsure if anything had been taken from him, according to police, but later discovered his money in another pocket. The victim did have two lumps on his forehead, so he was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Driving with gun, weed, booze Carrington J.P. Vance, 26, of Chicago faces weapons and drug charges after Riverside police reported recovering a .22-caliber revolver, six rounds of ammunition, an open bottle of whiskey and cannabis during a traffic stop on April 14 at 4:15 p.m. in the 3600 block of Harlem Avenue.

According to police, Vance was pulled over for not properly wearing a seatbelt and continued to smoke a cannabis “blunt” while the officer was talking to him during the traffic stop.

Vance reportedly did not have a valid firearm owner’s ID. He was charged with felony unlawful use of a weapon due to a previous weapons offense in May 2013.

Concrete through a car window Brookfield police responded to the 9300 block of Jefferson Avenue on the morning of April 13 after a resident called to report that someone had thrown a hunk of concrete through the rear window of his 2007 Buick during the overnight hours.

Nothing appeared to have been taken from the vehicle, whose doors remained locked.

Doughnuts in the outfield Riverside police responded to the baseball fields at Indian Gardens, 357 Fairbank Road, on the morning of April 15, after someone called to report that overnight a vehicle had driven onto the grass and left tire ruts in the area between the infields.

Parks and Rec Director Ron Malchiodi said he’ll have to hire a contractor to make repairs, but added he doesn’t think the damage will affect the start of Little League games this weekend.

Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

A cataract is the clouding of the lens inside the eye. Neither drops nor pills can prevent or cure a cataract. The only treatment for a cataract is its surgical removal and its replacement with a clear artificial lens or intraocular lens implant (IOL).

What is the difference between a monofocal implant and a bifocal implant?

In the past, the IOL corrected distance vision only; this is called a monofocal implant. Patients who undergo cataract surgery with a monofocal implant still need reading glasses. Recent advances incorporate a bifocal into the IOL. The bifocal implant allows patients to read without glasses, drive without glasses, and do virtually all of their activities without glasses.

What will I experience during cataract surgery with a bifocal implant?

Cataract surgery is performed on an outpatient basis using eye drops to numb your eye; no shots are necessary. The operation takes approximately 20 minutes after which you will rest for a short time before going home. Post-operatively, you will be asked to instill eye drops for a few weeks after surgery. You will have 90% of you vision back within one day and your eye will be completely healed within two weeks.

How do I find out if bifocal implants are right for me?

With 2017 Class of `60 Over 60’ Honorees, Celebrating Seniors Coalition Continues Great & Grateful Tradition

ince the inaugural Celebrating Seniors Week in 2011, one of its recurring spotlight events has been Rib’bon Fest.

On that evening, over a dinner consisting of barbecue ribs and other culinary offerings from local restaurants, Celebrating Seniors organizers preview the week of activities to be held throughout Oak Park, Forest Park and River Forest.

But the gathering’s primary purpose is to turn the spotlight on the latest class of “60 Over 60” honorees. Through the first six years of its history, the Celebrating Seniors Coalition has offered this recognition to more than 400 people. And with this year’s group of men and women, the organization on Thursday, May 11th will carry on a tradition that teems with greatness and gratitude at the Nineteenth Century Club, 178 Forest Ave. in Oak Park.

The seventh crop of individuals ranges from a few 60-year-olds, Paul McKenna and Kathy Onayemi, to longtime River Forest resident Marian Brennen, whose 100th birthday is May 17th—perfectly timed the day

before Celebrating Seniors Week kicks off on Thursday, May 18th.

In addition to the Rib’bon Fest event, all honorees are included in a Celebrating Seniors Resource Guide, along with their photographs and brief biographical information.

Alphabetically, the class begins with Evelyn Allen, 82, a longtime Realtor and River Forest resident who has served on a variety of boards and committees, and concludes with Paula Waldron, 86, who moved to Oak Park five years ago and then developed a series of art appreciation courses for seniors through the Park District, including art-related field trips.

The average age among honorees is in the mid-70s, with at least eight in their 90s and seven husband-and-wife duos, including longtime Oak Park Township Supervisor David Boulanger and his wife, Mena.

One of the other couples: 90-yearold Herman and 87-year-old Hertha Holstein. Herman provided a profound quote, which will appear in the Celebrating Seniors Resource Guide: “There are times in life when you just have to listen to your inner voices, such as the time I heard ‘It’s time to go,’ just prior to slipping across the border into Switzerland in April of 1945, a month before Germany surrendered to the Allied forces.”

The Resource Guide, which is free and will be available at a variety of locations starting in early May, will contain “words to live by” that represent a must-read

for anybody who considers himself or herself a lifelong learner. Among those precious pearls of wisdom:

“The most amazing part has been reading the `words to live by,” said Preys. “I have enjoyed seeing the similarities,

and the uniqueness, of these remarkable honorees. This has been a labor of love for me, and for all the volunteers who are part of Celebrating Seniors.”

Between May 18-25, about 40 Celebrating Seniors events will be held throughout the three villages. Their focus is to educate and entertain, and nearly all of the sessions are free of charge and open to people of all ages.

The panel topics is “The Silver Gold Rush: Aging’s Impact on Business and Community,” with Amos joined by Marla Levie, CEO of marketing agency Focus on Aging, Rosanna Marquez, AARP Illinois State President, and Claudia Santin, Dean of the College of Business at Concordia University Chicago.

n two years when there are four seats up for election to the Lyons-Brookfield District 103 school board, residents should remember last week.

Desperate to keep their grip on the operation of the school district, the village of Lyons-controlled board majority handed out contract extensions to every administrator but one and gave new one-year contracts to employees who have never had such deals in the history of the school district.

The superintendent’s administrative assistant all of a sudden needs a contract? The maintenance director all of a sudden needs a contract? The superintendent, who already had a three-year contract suddenly needs a fourth year?

We’re surprised the district’s legal counsel somehow didn’t get an iron clad, three-year deal.

Because, take it to the bank, the first order of business will be to give them the heave ho when the new majority is seated.

Residents of District 103, the current board majority is using your school district as a wallet to reward allies and attempt to subvert the will of the voters, who gave a back of the hand to that majority in the most recent election.

And then there’s this matter of photos of a board member’s granddaughter suddenly appearing right after the election and before the seating of a board that would result in a new majority.

Oh, sure, no one made any threats. Just a head’s up, you know, between us friends. It could be so embarrassing, we thought you should know.

Funny thing about those photos and that website.

Who would even know to look for them there? The ad carries no name, no identifying address. If you wanted to punch someone’s name into an online search engine to scoop up tawdry details that could be used against that person or their family members, you’d never find that link.

Someone either got very lucky or knew what they were looking for. Either way, that says more about the person or people seeking to give the righteous heads-up than it says about the board member.

In any case, it has absolutely nothing to do with the board member’s position as an elected official and nothing to do with the education of the students of District 103 -- unlike hiring political cronies to positions of power in the school district’s administration and then giving them contracts with no “out” clauses and then extending those contracts as the current majority’s goodbye present.

The new board members will be seated on April 27 – after another regularly scheduled board meeting. Will there be any more rabbits pulled out of hats between now and then?

We don’t know, but residents and voters had better pay attention and then remember exactly how they’ve been treated.

The port-a-potty: A sure sign of spring

I

t’s a sure sign of spring and the beginning of Little League season, when the port-a-potty appears in the park. I agree whole-heartedly with their need, but as I view the one standing at the Big Ball Park in Riverside, I keep thinking there might be a way to camouflage the big green box in some way.

Now, I don’t want to get too much into it for fear I may have a new assignment. I keep thinking some kind of an arbor might make it a little less unsightly with possibly some ivy around it. Just a thought.

I don’t intend for this column to go to pot, but the fields are an improvement, including port-a-potties, from when our kids were younger and they were told to go before they left the house or to make friends with someone who lived close to the park in case of an emergency.

Actually there are many improvements to Little League fields in our Riverside-Brookfield-North Riverside area which goes beyond the potty facilities.

Husband Joe refers to his days as a little slugger and playing at the clearing at 6th Avenue and 26th street.

He still likes to regale us with his prowess on the playing

field and has a few trophies to prove it.

Ehlert Park and Kiwanis Park in Brookfield make it fun to see a game, even if you don’t have anyone playing. The field have good snack bars with plenty of eats and, yes, indoor potties. North Riverside has great fields with plenty of parking and, yes, good snack bar and indoor plumbing.

Riverside’s fields are not as plush, but they are so much better than they used to be. I remember when the back stops went up -- that was a big step. And bleachers made it possible to not have to lug a folding chair. But even these days, be sure to bring your own snack.

Now on this morning’s news I hear that someone decided to vandalize the ball fields at Indian Gardens in Riverside. A thoughtless, mean act that will be costly and time consuming.

Obviously, the perpetrator never gave a thought that the ones that were being hurt are the children who use the fields. Hopefully the vandals will be apprehended. But, make no mistake: Little League season in Riverside will continue, because those of us who love baseball and Little League will make sure it does. Play ball!

North Riverside should support wage, sick time law

Just recently I’ve learned that last year, Cook County passed two ordinances to increase the minimum wage and also allow workers the ability to earn paid sick time.

I truly believe in a hard-working, middle class town like North Riverside, this is important and necessary in order for working families to thrive and survive in our community.

In reading minutes from a recent North Riverside village board meeting, though, I was very upset to see that there was discussion of possibly trying to opt out of these two ordinances.

Earning a living minimum wage and paid sick time is the best way to build a stronger, healthier and happier work force which in turn builds happy and healthier families in our community.

I sincerely hope that Mayor Hermanek and the North Riverside trustees will strongly consider supporting these two much deserved improvements to the basic rights of workers rather than opting out of them.

Don’t ignore new laws for hourly workers Village administrators: You are accountable to your citizens as well as your businesses. Through ballot referendums in 2014 and 2016, your citizens overwhelmingly supported an incremental minimum wage increase, and voted to allow workers to accrue five paid sick days annually.

Why did we already vote on it? Because these laws are good for the community. They’re good for families trying to make ends meet. They’re good for our kids, getting their first jobs. They’re good for our public health, since sick employees can get well versus spreading disease to unsuspecting customers.

Do not try to opt out of Cook County laws that mandate these changes. Don’t try and slip in this discussion/decision quietly, in township meetings at the request of business owners.

LaGrange tried to slip it through. And when the citizens found out, citizens made it clear the Cook County laws should stand. Listen to your citizens. What we have already told you, and what we’re telling you now.

These Cook County laws are good for workers and customers, and don’t damage businesses. Our pocket of communities can’t be the outlaws, out of step with the rest of suburban Cook County.

If we do, consumers and workers will go elsewhere, our school revenue will suffer, and it will tarnish the image of our villages.

Fun-loving Bulldogs piling up wins in softball Team chemistry, talent lead to 10-4 record, with notable wins over York, LTHS and Glenbard South

This may be senior catcher Cameron Shaw’s fourth varsity season with the Riverside-Brookfield High School softball team, but it’s sure not more of the same.

“This season has been great. Every time we go on the bus, we always play music and no matter what, everyone is dancing and singing together,” Shaw said. “I think that actually helps our positivity on the field or even at practice. It’s significantly different than last year.”

With Saturday’s doubleheader split at York, the Bulldogs (10-4) already have equaled their 2016 victory total as they enjoy big improvements on and off the field.

They swept rival Lyons Township 4-3 and 2-0 April 1 in Western Springs. On April 11, they opened Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division play with a 3-2 victory over Glenbard South, the defending champions who won the 2016 title with a 12-0 record.

Shaw and shortstop/pitcher Alivia Ranieri and third baseman Marissa McDermott, both third-year varsity seniors, are tri-captains. Amanda Martinez and Camryn Hamilton are the other seniors.

“Beating Glenbard South was a huge victory because we haven’t beat them since forever,” said McDermott, All-MSC in 2016. “I think we just have to stay confident and believe in each of our players to do what they have to do.”

Handling most of the pitching are Dachota (5-2, 4.36 earned-run average, 28 strikeouts in 39 innings) and junior Tori Blood (3-0, 3.91 ERA).

This is the best start for fourth-year RBHS coach Doug Schultz. New varsity assistant Emma Jarrell formerly coached the freshmen.

“We really worked on a team-first approach at the beginning of the season,” Schultz said. “We’ve had a lot of younger players that have really matured and are producing, and it’s a great mix of seniors, too. It’s a good combination of multiple things.”

RBHS tied Glenbard South 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth and won in the seventh on a game-ending, two-out single by Rangel after pinch-hitter Kulaga singled and reached third on Nadia Ranieri’s sacrifice. Dachota allowed five hits.

In the 2-0 victory over LTHS, Dachota threw a two-hitter and was 2 for 3 and Lambros and Blood had RBIs. A threerun sixth helped Blood earn the win in the first-game.

The Bulldogs also have one-run victories over Lemont (7-6 April 12) and York (4-3). They’ve scored at least 12 runs four times.

“Everyone can get a hit. There’s no one who can’t hit on our team,” McDermott said.

While the Riverside-Brookfield High School baseball team unquestionably has individually talented players, head coach Dallas Till has always believed the Bulldogs’ sum is greater than its parts.

In other words, RBHS isn’t going anywhere without playing fundamental, team-oriented baseball.

That winning formula was on full display Saturday at Ehlert Park in Brookfield during the Bulldogs’ thrilling 5-4 victory in 10 innings against Oswego.

Tied at 4-all in the 10th inning, RBHS junior outfielder Howie Hatton singled to right-center to start off the Bulldogs’ decisive frame. Hatton advanced to third base on a stolen base and throwing error by the Oswego shortstop. Senior third baseman Asher Runyan-Randruut had the gamewinning RBI on a sacrifice fly to center field scoring Hatton.

“There were a ton of great plays today,” Till said. “This game was filled with great baseball plays. We were fortunate to come out on top against a great baseball club.”

Several players contributed for the Bulldogs (8-3-1), including junior Jarod Turina (3-for-3, RBI), sophomore first

baseman Ryan Cermak (2-for-2, RBI) and Runyan-Randruut (2-for-3, RBI).

Turina pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on four hits while striking out four and walking two.

“I was feeling pretty confident,” Turina said. “In the past, Oswego has been a really tough competitor so to finally get a win against them felt really good.”

With the Bulldogs trailing 3-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, freshman catcher Mike Schicker started a rally with a one-out single. With two outs, Turina drilled a double to score courtesy runner Casey Vileta from first and tie the game 3-3. Cermak followed with a single to right field that scored Turina to give the Bulldogs a 4-3 advantage.

Oswego tied the game at 4-all in the sixth. RBHS senior pitcher Sammy Habayeb worked 3 2/3 of scoreless relief scoreless before winning pitcher Austin Holin came in the 10th to finish out the game.

“Composure was a huge key for us today,” Turina said.

“You don’t want to get ahead of yourself especially if you’re having a good day. You can’t get too low or too high.”

There have been more ups then downs for the Bulldogs this season. Although back-to-back losses against Illiana Christian and Aurora Central Catholic hurt earlier this

Goalkeeper Graham provides boost for Bulldogs Team remains a work in progress offensively

Emily Graham’s often breathtaking play between the pipes has kept the Riverside-Brookfield High School girls soccer team in nearly every game so far this season.

The Bulldogs breathed a sigh of relief after their star goalkeeper was able to stay in the game after being injured with 16:46 left in the second half of Saturday’s game at Marist.

Graham made a spectacular reflex save to tip a shot from Sara Eisha into and over the crossbar to keep the game scoreless, but stayed on the ground for a couple minutes afterward.

“When I landed it knocked the wind out of me,” Graham said. “I thought I had popped my hip, but it ended up being OK.” The Bulldogs (3-4) have been OK thanks to Graham, a junior in her first season as the full-time starter. Graham made five saves in regulation and another two in the ensuing shootout against Marist, which edged RBHS 1-0 on penalty kicks.

“She was phenomenal,” RBHS coach Ivek Halic said.

“She’s kept us in games many times. “She’s doing wonderful. Her communication organizes the back line for us and she has been facilitating a lot for us.”

Graham did her best in the shootout. She dove to her left and got a hand on Marist’s first attempt, but the shot from Emma Brennan struck the inside of the left post and went in.

Marist (5-8) took a 2-0 lead as Anne Callaghan scored while

RBHS failed on its first two attempts, with the first shot being saved by Marist goalie Cassandra Eraci and the second missing wide left.

But the Bulldogs rallied to tie it 2-2 as Graham stopped the next two Marist attempts, diving to her left to deny Megan Kirkwood and to her right to thwart Victoria Lara.

Meanwhile, senior Esther Annoreno and freshman Mazzy Marcucci made their penalties to pull RBHS even heading into the fifth round.

“On the first (shot) I was definitely disappointed that my touch wasn’t enough to make the save,” Graham said. “But I knew the most pressure is on the shooter, so all I had to do is try everything I could to get a touch on the ball. Luckily those (next) two shots I could get to.”

But the Redhawks pulled out the win when Sheila O’Keefe knocked her penalty off the underside of the crossbar and in and the Bulldogs’ final attempt rolled wide left.

Despite the loss, the Bulldogs played well against an opponent that advanced to the Class 2A supersectionals last season and was playing with a significant home field advantage. Marist’s football stadium has a narrow field barely wider than the football field and that gives opponents fits.

The was the case for the Bulldogs, who played solid defense but rarely was able to connect to the forwards to sustain an attack, though the effort got better as the game went on.

“In the first half I think we were trying to find ourselves, trying to find the flow of the game,” Graham said. “Toward the second half we started capitalizing on all the chances that we had to really move forward. We were just missing that last little bit to have the shot on net.”

Impressive credentials aside, I applaud the hiring of Reingruber simply based on the eyeball test. Covering high school sports for over 20 years, I’ve entered countless high school gyms and caught fourthquarter action of sophomore basketball games. The early arrival is to get my clipboard, game notes, laptop ready for the ensuing varsity game.

Reingruber’s sophomore basketball teams are the only ones, however, that interested me enough to put the preparation material aside and just enjoy lower level basketball.

What can I say, I am a sucker for entertaining basketball regardless of age group.

Watching those sophomore games, I became familiar with future RBHS varsity stars like Chris Parrish, Dan Oswald, Damonta Henry,

Will Kincanon, Sam Johnson and Jalen Clanton. I appreciated how those teams always played hard and fair until the final buzzer.

And I definitely noticed how Reingruber comported himself along the sideline. He’s competitive but composed, organized but creative. When I watch Reingruber, I see a coach who is in control. The kids buy in which is immeasurable to success.

I remember thinking multiple times, Mike Reingruber is the future leader of Bulldogs basketball. Fundamentally, he will stay true to the recipe of winning McCloskey established but assuredly add some wrinkles of his own.
