Brookfield declares state of emergency

Brookfield’s village board voted unanimously on March 23 to declare a state of emergency on the heels of Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s statewide stay-at-home order late last week to stem the spread of COVID-19. No one in Brookfield has tested positive for the upper respiratory disease, but officials at the state and local level are attempting to “flatten the curve” of new cases, which had climbed to nearly 1,300 statewide on March 23 from 46 on March 13. “People will notice nothing different with this, not with how the village is operating or what they see around them,” said Village President Kit Ketchmark. “It’s the next level of preparedness.” The village offices were closed, KIT KETCHMARK effective March 23, until further notice. Police officers, firefighter/paramedics and public works employees continue to work and those departments will be “fully operational,” according to a notice on the village’s website. The lobby of the police station remains open during its normal hours, and village hall employees will continue to work, remotely if possible.

Brookfield music businesses take classes virtual in face of state shutdown By BOB UPHUES Editor

Group learning is an essential part of the experience at Ms. Clara’s Joyful Learning center, a kinder-music school for children ranging in age from in-

fants to 5 years old, founded nine years ago in Brookfield by Clara D’Onofrio. As last week dawned, D’Onofrio was faced with her business model in crisis. With the state quickly moving toward a stay-at-home order, she shut down classes at her storefront at 9213

Broadway Ave. in the interest of safety. D’Onofrio had never seriously considered delivering her classes virtually before, but now that was going to change. See VIRTUAL on page 11
