he new week dawned Monday, somewhat incongruously, with a celebration.

In the face of a stateimposed lockdown of businesses like bars and restaurants set for later that night and calls for social distancing by health experts and elected officials, about two dozen employees and a few local dignitaries huddled to cut the ribbon on a new Hobby Lobby store on Cermak Road in North Riverside.

The event started with a prayer.

Within the next hour, in response to the national, state and county states of emergency over the COVID-19 pandemic, Mayor Hubert Hermanek Jr. announced that the village board meeting scheduled that night was postponed and that as of 4:30 p.m. that day, the Village Commons building would be closed, except for voting during the March 17 presidential primary, until March 30.

“Employees will be in the building and residents can still communicate by phone and email,” Hermanek said.

D95 settles on company for aftercare in 2020-21 For-profit Right at School to run program

Brookfield-LaGrange Park Elementary School District 95 has chosen an Evanston-based, for-profit company to run its aftercare program next year. On March 12 school board members voted 4 to 1, with one abstention, to authorize Superintendent Mark Kuzniewski to enter into an agreement with Right At School to operate an aftercare program next year at Brook Park School.

Right At School, founded nine years ago, runs before and aftercare programs for 71 school districts throughout the United States, including LaGrangeBrookfield School District 102 and 16 others in Illinois.

Five entities, including the Brookfield Parks and Recreation Department and the Community Park District of LaGrange Park, responded to a request for proposals from District 95.

On Feb. 27 the school board

heard presentations from Right At School and another for-profit company called Champions, as well as the two municipalities.

Afterwards the board discussed their options and narrowed the choice to Right at School and Champions as finalists. After site visits, administrators recommended Right At School.

Administrators and board members were impressed by Right At School’s experience and staff, which is mostly made up of people with backgrounds in education. They liked Right At School’s curriculum and academic approach.

“The community wanted programs that had homework help and structure,” said District 95 school board President Michelle Maggos.

Some board members said that it was just too big a risk to have Brookfield and LaGrange Park run the program, because they never had run after-school programs before.

“We shouldn’t be their guinea pigs to see if it works out OK,” said board member Scott Encher.

Encher liked that Right At School specializes in working with schools.

“That’s what they do; that’s all

they do,” Encher said.

Board members were not impressed that both municipalities said that they would look to hire high school students to work in their program.

“I felt there was just a marked dissonance between what was offered and what was needed,” said board member Katie Mulcrone. “I think the kids need more structure.”

District 95 principals preferred a curriculum-based program such as Right At School offers.

Adam Case, the Chief Service Officer for Right At School, said that his company generally hires retired teachers, school aides who want to work a few extra hours, and students who are studying to be teachers to staff its programs.

“Our mission is to inspire a love of learning, to support schools, and to give parents piece of mind,” Case said.

Meagan McAteer cast the only vote against Right At School while Barbara Garvey, whose husband, Michael, is a Brookfield village trustee, abstained.

Jacqueline Jordan was not at the meeting.

“I don’t have any qualms with Right at School. I think that they’ll be just fine,” McAteer

said. “My qualm was with us privatizing it without any followup to the two municipal vendors.”

Stevie Ferrari, the director of the Brookfield Parks and Recreation Department was disappointed in the decision. Ferrari and Brookfield Village Manager Timothy Wiberg have spent much of the last year talking with District 95 officials about starting an after-school care program for District 95.

But the Brookfield Parks and Recreation Department will go ahead and still create a beforeand after-school program geared towards District 95 students.

The program will be housed in the basement of the Brookfield Village Hall, but District 95 will provide bus service to and from Brook Park School.

Kuzniewski said that running to buses from and to village hall should end up being cost neutral, because those students would likely also need bus service if they went directly to Brook Park.

Gov. J.B. Pritzker took action Sunday, ordering all Illinois restaurants and bars to shut down, effective March 16, until March 30. However, delivery, carry-out and curbside pick-up will continue during the two weeks public dining rooms are closed to the public.

The 45-year old diner has a good carryout following, but the restaurant had to reduce staff to a just “a select few” to control costs during this shut down. Fear, uncertainty and stress are prevalent among Mother’s Day staff members, according to Paleothodoros.

The diner also shortened their hours of operation and has transitioned to a limited menu of soups, salads, sandwiches and breakfast items conducive to being carried out.

Mother’s Day is also considering ways they can support their regular customers, some of whom eat three meals a day at the diner.

“We cannot survive on take-out orders alone,” said Paleothodoros. “My advice would be for people to stop cooking and pick up dinner.”

Churches wrestle with access for the faithful Chicago Archdiocese shutters all Catholic churches

Catholic churches in Brookfield, Riverside, North Riverside and LaGrange Park -- Mater Christi, St. Barbara, St Louise de Marillac and St. Mary -- were not” open for business” as usual on Sunday morning because Cardinal Cupich, with the stroke of a pen, had temporarily suspended Mass in all 344 parishes in the Archdiocese of Chicago.

The same held for St. Paul Episcopal Church in Riverside, where Father Luke Wetzel announced the closure on the church’s website. All parish activities and Sunday Mass are canceled through March 29.

But many other churches polled by Landmark said that they had held services or made no mention of a closure on their websites. Those who responded to inquiries by the Landmark all emphasized that they took great pains to avoid spreading germs.

Cornerstone Community Church in Brookfield, for example, said they did hold worship Sunday and that they are doing what the CDC is advising, like washing

hands, keeping social distance and washing down chairs and tables before and after every service and class.

Likewise, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Brookfield held worship services as usual and even included the receiving of Holy Communion as they had always done, while at the same promoting the use of hand sanitizer and the other usual safeguards.

Although St. Nikola Serbian Orthodox Church announced on its website that it would continue to hold Sunday services as usual, but advised caution, particularly by elderly parishioners, advising them to stay home.

“Since we know by now that older people are the most affected by this virus, we advise them to stay home in the coming days,” the Very Rev. Nemanja Tesic wrote.

“They will be in prayer with us, and we ask them to pray for us. We also encourage all those who have flu and cold symptoms, and those who are afraid to stay in their homes and pray. Whenever we fall out of holy worship for a valid reason -- that’s okay.”

Riverside Presbyterian Church’s pastor,

the Rev. Dale Jackson, said while the congregation held worship services Sunday, it was not an indication of future policy. The church’s leaders were expected to meet March 18 to assess the fast-changing situation and make a decision regarding what to do next Sunday.

Rev. Chris Honig, pastor of Ascension Lutheran Church in Riverside, said that the decision had been made to suspend all gatherings, meetings and worship services through the end of March.

A post on the church’s Facebook page connected church members to a web page with links to readings for the third Sunday in Lent and the text for that week’s sermon “receiving Water in the Wilderness.”

Whether the decision was made to close the doors of the church or to keep them open, church leaders acknowledged that the decision was based on where to draw the line between prudence on the one hand and a tolerance for risk on the other.

“This was not a decision I made lightly,” said Cardinal Blase Cupich. “The Eucharist is the source and summit of our life as Catholics. And our schools and agencies provide essential services to many thou-

sands across Cook and Lake Counties. But, in consultation with leaders from across the archdiocese, for the sake of the safety of our students, parishioners, and all the women and men who serve the people of the archdiocese, it is clear that we must take the better part of caution in order to slow the spread of this pandemic.”

The Chicago Archdiocese is broadcasting Mass via YouTube.

Meanwhile, Compassion United Methodist Church in Brookfield is held worship service last Sunday, even with a fraction of their regular attendance. The Rev. Karl Sokol also video recorded the service and send it out to members who chose to maintain social distance by staying at home.

One difference which might help explain why Catholics and many Protestant congregations came down in different places, even though they share the same concerns, is structure or church polity.

The Catholic church has an episcopal polity, which places the bishops at the top of the power pyramid, while most Protestant churches have a congregational polity, which places each individual congregation at the top.

Riverside and Brookfield both closed their Parks and Recreation departments to the public and canceled all programs and events. In addition, Riverside’s Department of Public Works is closed to the public until further notice.

Late last week, Gov. J.B. Pritzker ordered all schools, both public and private, shut (See accompanying story). But, before that, as local schools and libraries started announcing the cancellation of programs, events and sports, a kind of quiet panic was setting in.

That unease manifested itself prominently Friday, when crowds descended on grocery stores and began picking shelves clean.

The trend continued into Monday as the governor ordered the closure of bars and restaurants effective Monday night at 9 p.m.

There was a run, in particular, on paper products – which were not to be seen after Saturday afternoon at Costco in North Riverside and were in low supply elsewhere.

Grocery store managers, meanwhile, worked overtime to keep shelves stocked as best they could.

“Friday, Saturday, Sunday and part of today this is where the line started,” said Dennis Tischler, owner of Tischler Finer Foods in Brookfield on Monday afternoon. At the time he was standing about 10 feet from the rear wall of the store. “For all the registers.

The shelves at Tischler’s were not packed, but they were not bare either and contained some items, like chicken and bread, that other, larger chains lacked. That’s despite having been largely cleared out on Sunday.

“We had two overpacked semis this morning that unloaded before 7 a.m.,” Tischler said. “Those produce cases were about 5 percent filled. Deli and dairy over there – same thing.

“I’ve been on the phone. All I’ve been doing is ordering, and our purveyors have been servicing us.”

Elsewhere in North Riverside, at Costco, Jewel and Aldi – where corporate high-ups had forbidden store level employees from speaking to the press – signs of similar challenges were obvious. The normally stockedto-the-ceiling shelves at Costco were depleted and a sign out front Monday listed items no longer in supply, from bleach to toilet paper to diapers.

On Sunday afternoon, Costco was out of fresh pork (save for five slabs of pork belly), chicken and fish. Sitting in cases normally reserved for those products were mac and cheese, too-soon-for Easter spiral hams and $100 whole Serrano hams, which likely were deemed by panic-shoppers as a bit of an extravagance.

Store manager Meghan Henehan directed questions to the corporate office, but called business “record busy.”

But that busy-ness has its limits and by Monday, a sign on the door at Jewel indicated that the store’s hours had been cut.

Two weeks after a burglary crew smashed its way into a Brookfield liquor store, attempting to steal the ATM inside, burglars struck twice during the early-morning hours of March 13 at gas stations across the street from one another at 31st Street and Maple Avenue.

According to Brookfield police, the two break-ins took place between 4:15 and 4:20 a.m. at the Shell station, 3101 Maple Ave., and the Clark station, 3045 Maple Ave. Both were closed for business and no employees were inside at the time.

Surveillance video gathered from cameras at the intersection showed a light-colored SUV pulling up to each business and a crew of what appears to be four men wearing masks smashing out the glass doors before entering the businesses.

The crew was unable to remove the ATM, which reportedly was bolted to the floor, from the Shell station. However, offenders stole cigarettes and liquor from the minimart there.

The ATM was removed from the Clark station, according to police. It’s not known how much money was inside the machine.

There was a delay in notifying police of the break-ins because the initial alert went to the business’ alarm companies, who contacted the owners before contacting police.

Mall security threatened with gun

A 29-year-old Cicero man faces felony weapons charges after he allegedly pointed a loaded gun at a security guard at North Riverside Park Mall, 7501 Cermak Road, on March 8 about 3:20 p.m.

Security and police initially were responding to a report of a stolen cellphone involving three offenders. Two of the alleged offenders were able to elude security, but a security guard was able to locate David R. Alvarez in the upper level of the east parking deck.

As the security guard ordered Alvarez to wait until police arrived, Alvarez reportedly pulled out a Glock 43X handgun and pointed it at the security guard before running away into the east mall parking lot.

Alvarez disappeared behind a large snow bank and then was seen walking away to the northeast. Police took him into custody and reported finding the handgun, loaded with 10 rounds, including seven rounds of hollow-point ammunition, behind the snow bank.

The Cook County State’s Attorney approved filing two felony charges against Alvarez, one for unlawful use of a weapon and one for aggravated assault. He was also banned from the mall.

Vehicle hijacking A 44-year-old Chicago woman called North Riverside police on the night of March 13 to report that her 2011 black Dodge Durango had been taken from her by force in the west parking lot of Chili’s, 7225 Cermak Road.

The woman told police she parked the car about 8 p.m. in a handicap space in front of the Chili’s to-go entrance. As she exited the vehicle, the victim said a man approached her, forced her out of the vehicle and threw her to the ground before getting into her SUV and leaving the area.

The victim said her cellphone and driver’s license were also inside the vehicle. Police drove the woman home and continue to investigate the vehicular hijacking.

Catalytic converter thieves strike twice North Riverside police responded to two locations in the village on March 13 after getting a pair of calls about catalytic converters being removed from vehicles. In both instances surveillance cameras caught the incidents.

A resident of the 2300 block of 13th Avenue called police to report that someone had removed the catalytic converter from his vehicle, which was parked on the street.

They also responded to an address in the 2400 block of 5th Avenue.

Car stolen from restaurant lot A 22-year-old Berwyn woman called police on the night of March 10 to report that her red Ford Mustang had been stolen from the parking lot at Raising Cane’s, 2514 S. Harlem Ave. The woman said her brother had been using the vehicle and had left it parked and unlocked, with the keys inside the center console.

After a 30-year career as a firefighter and fire chief in Westchester, James Adams is coming home to Brookfield.

Raised in Brookfield, Adams will step into the role of Brookfield fire chief on April 6, chosen from a field of seven final candidates, two of them internal.

He replaces Fire Chief Mark Duffek, who retired in December after a 38-year career.

Capt. Brian Baldwin had served as interim chief during the search for Duffek’s successor.

“I’m really excited to get back there,” said Adams, who attended St. Barbara School and Nazareth Academy and lived in Brookfield until the age of 23.

Adams will be the Brookfield first fire chief who was not promoted to the post from within. Ed Bermann, the retired longtime fire captain and departmental historian, told the Landmark that the village has had just eight fire chiefs in its history, all of whom came up through the ranks in Brookfield.

Village Manager Timothy Wiberg acknowledged that coming in from another department might present a hurdle for Adams, but said that the new chief ’s ties to the village will help.

“He grew up in town and understands the community, which will help smooth his transition into the role,” Wiberg said.

He got his start in the fire service as a paid-on-call firefighter in 1988 and was hired full-time as firefighter in Westchester in 1990. He spent 18 years as a firefighter paramedic before being promoted to lieutenant in 2008.

Adams was promoted to chief in 2011 and said he was involved in Westchester’s transition to a consolidated dispatch center, initiating electronic patient care reporting in Westchester before it was required by the state and strengthening health and safety policies at the village’s two fire stations.

He said he also served as the fire department’s grant writer as chief, with about $800,000 in grant funding being awarded for everything from a heavy rescue vehicle to radios.

As we close in on spring, the Chicago area is wrapping up one of the warmest winters in recorded history.

Based on the (mostly safe) Scott assumption that McAdam Jr. we will experience an early and mild spring, we can generally expect that dormancy will be broken earlier in the season. As a result, there should be an earlier initiation of new plant growth.

“Money is hard to come by, so you need to get creative,” Adams said. “Opportunities aren’t going to find you, so you’ve got to go out and find them.”

Wiberg said Adams’ experience as a chief and his track record of initiatives in Westchester made him the top choice. All seven finalists were interviewed by Wiberg and Assistant Village Manager George Issakoo and separately by village of Brookfield department heads.

“He’s had so much more experience leading department for many years, and has a lot of ideas for improvements he’ll bring, such as modernizing technology and practices,” Wiberg said.

Adams said he wasn’t particularly look-

ing for a change. But about a week after hearing of Duffek’s retirement, he reached out to the former chief and to another friend, former Brookfield HR director Michelle Robbins before deciding to throw his hat in the ring.

“It was an opportunity that just fell in my lap at the right time,” Adams said.

Adams has a bachelor’s degree from Western Illinois University. He also is a former varsity and sophomore level football coach at St. Joseph High School at Westchester, and for the past five years has kept official stats at home games for the Chicago Bears, a job he took over from his late father-inlaw, George Strnad, a Riverside resident who did that job for 35 years.

TAX REFORM’S IMPACT ON FINANCING STRATEGIES PART II

ertain sectors are more likely to be negatively impacted by the change in the tax law. For instance, leveraged buyouts and mergers and acquisitions are often concentrated in the healthcare and technology industries.

Although multinational companies are beginning to consider moving debt to foreign subsidiaries now, the pressure may increase after 2021, at least until income earned outside the United States is addressed in a tax-efficient manner. There are questions about whether the Section 1630) rules apply to foreign subsidiaries for purposes of the new “minimum tax,” which could affect the U.S. tax benefit or the cost of shifting debt to foreign subsidiaries. Guidance from the Internal Revenue Service is expected on this issue in the relatively near term.

In addition to causing a shift in financing strategies, the new deduction cap may result in an increase in the

default rate for borrowers. Lenders could find themselves as creditors in bankruptcy proceedings and, depending on factors such as the priority of their liens and value of their collateral, recover pennies on the doJlar. In addition to the exposure to existing loan portfolios, the increased risk of default may impact the factors used by lenders in issuing new debt.

While it is too early to predict the full impact of the change to the business interest deduction, it is clear that the factors that impact borrowing decisions are changing.

There may be fewer leveraged buyouts, increased use of leasing as a means of equipping businesses and more equity offerings.

Census 2020 count is under way Illinois officials say a lot is at stake in getting accurate count

SPRINGFIELD – People throughout the United States are now able to fill out their census forms online, and state officials in Illinois are pulling out all the stops to make sure the state gets an accurate headcount.

Between March 12 and March 20, about 95 percent of all households in the country will receive a postcard in the mail inviting them to fill out their census form online or by phone in their language.

“The census is only nine questions – nine questions that impact every single person in your hometown, our state and across the country,” Grace Hou, secretary of the Illinois Department of Human Services, said during a news conference on March 11. “These nine questions are important for your family, your neighbor, your city, your county and your state because your response determines Illinois’ infrastructure, meaning roads, hospitals, schools, grocery stores and fire stations.”

The U.S. Constitution requires that a census be taken every 10 years in order to apportion seats in Congress. Responding to the census is mandatory for all people living in the United States regardless of their citizenship, although the questionnaire does not ask about citizenship.

The census form asks the name of each person living in the household as of April 1, their dates of birth, ages, race and ethnicity, their relationships to each other and whether the home is occupied by the owners or renters.

In addition to allocating congressional seats, the federal government also uses that data as the basis for distributing hundreds of billions of dollars each year to states and local communities for things like education, health care,

housing, highways and other infrastructure.

State governments also use census data to redraw congressional and state legislative district lines.

Recent census estimates have shown Illinois has been losing population and is at risk of losing at least one of its 18 congressional seats.

Because of that, the Illinois General Assembly last year put $29 million in the state budget for IDHS to help ensure an accurate count.

Hou said $20 million of that has already been distributed in each of the state’s 102 counties to work with local organizations to maximize the census count.

Hou said IDHS was tasked with implementing the census in Illinois because, as the state’s main social service agency, it deals directly with “hard-to-count” populations, including the homeless.

Marishonta Wilkerson, one of the agency’s two census co-directors, said the YWCA has been designated to reach out to the homeless population in the Chicago area. Elsewhere in the state, she said, the agency is working with “regional intermediaries” to work with homeless shelters and other organizations to host “census nights” and provide internet access so those people can participate.

In previous years, people received a census form in the mail to be filled out, but this is the first year the U.S. Census Bureau has offered an online option. People will first receive a postcard in the mail inviting them to complete the form on the website, my2020census.gov.

That postcard will contain a 12-digit code that is used to verify a person’s address. But those who don’t receive a postcard, or who want to fill it out early, may select an option to enter their address manually or indicate that they do not have an address.

About a week later, people will receive a follow-up letter reminding them to complete the forms. They will receive a third reminder about a week after that. Then, anyone who still has not completed the form will receive another letter and a paper form to be filled out.

Road construction season coming soon in Brookfield Village plans to repave/ reconstruct 1.8 miles of side streets

While schools, libraries and recreation programs are shutting down, others local governments are preparing for road construction season, which is expected to commence in Brookfield early next month.

On March 9, the Brookfield Village Board voted to award Cicero-based J. Nardulli Concrete Inc. a $4.8 million contract to repave and/or reconstruct about 1.8 miles of residential side streets, repair and replace sections of curb and gutter and some driveway aprons, install about 1,800 feet of water main and repair sewers and drainage structures.

Nardulli Concrete was the lowest of four bidders for the work, with the highest being about $5.4 million.

Funding is coming from a variety of sources. The vast majority is coming from construction bonds approved by referendum in 2016 and issued earlier this year. The village is also using $750,000 from its water/sewer fund to pay for those elements of the project and $150,000 in tax increment financing (TIF) funds for streetscape improvements that will be done within the village’s newly created Grand Boulevard TIF District.

Village Engineer Derek Treichel said he expected work to begin the first or second

week of April. Construction should to complete by October.

“At this point, we don’t anticipate a delay in the project,” Treichel said. “However, things are changing rapidly with the response to the COVID-19 virus.”

The streets to be improved this spring and summer include Park Avenue between 31st Street and Monroe Avenue. The street will be widened and reconstructed, with all new curbs and gutters.

Another street being widened and resurfaced is Grant Avenue from Grand Boulevard to Maple Avenue, while Sunnyside Avenue will be resurfaced from Grant Avenue to Brookfield Avenue.

In addition several streets in the Hollywood section of the village are getting widened and resurfaced. South of the tracks, the 3700 and 3800 blocks of Rosemear and Hollywood Avenues will be resurfaced as will Woodside Avenue south of Waubansee Road and Greenview Avenue between Woodside and McCormick.

North of the tracks, improvements are being made to Hollywood Avenue between Washington and Brookfield and Woodside Avenue between Washington and Parkview.

This year, the village will also complete streetscape improvements in the Grand Boulevard/Prairie Avenue commercial district, including brick paver crosswalks and landings that were not included in the first phase of that improvement project in 2018.

Brookfield last July received a $73,000 grant from the West Suburban Mass Transit District to help fund that work.

Police, paramedics brace for first COVID-19 cases Local departments have been training, equipping first responders

No positive cases of COVID-19 have been identified in Riverside, Brookfield or North Riverside, yet. But Riverside Fire Chief Matthew Buckley says it’s inevitable. In fact, it’s probably already here.

“Do I believe the virus is currently here?

Yes,” said Riverside Fire Chief Matthew Buckley in an interview at the Riverside Fire Station on March 13. “We have carriers who are walking around with it right now, who don’t even know it.”

And while leaders at the national level might have dropped the ball on planning, that hasn’t been the case locally, according Buckley, who has been coordinating paramedic and police training with Riverside personnel and those of neighboring villages on COVID-19 and treating patients.

Two weeks ago, Buckley convened a meeting in Riverside of neighboring police fire chiefs to discuss planning and response measures.

“We’ve been working on our planning for well over two months with regard to getting equipment, training our personnel and making sure we are prepared for this,” Buckley said. “So I believe we are prepared.

It’s not going to be an easy operation by any means, but we are going to keep working on different staffing plans … to accommodate call load and what is trending and happening in our community.”

Dispatchers will be asking callers a series of questions, including whether anyone is experiencing flu-like symptoms, whether that person has traveled outside of the U.S. in the last two weeks or whether they’ve been in contact with anyone who has tested positive for COVID-19.

Paramedics and police officers have also been equipped with kits containing two N95 masks — one for the paramedic/police officer and one for the patient — as well as eye protection and gloves.

If paramedics determine the patient is positive for COVID-19 or is likely to test positive, paramedics will don lightweight Tychem suits and masks fitted with air filters.

“It gives our folks a lot more protection and then we will treat and transport that patient dressed just like that,” Buckley said.

Suits are not reused and masks are cleaned after use. Buckley said ambulances will be decontaminated after each use.

Admittedly, the presence of first responders in such gear could be jarring.

“Although some of these items, when worn, may look intimidating or seem overthe-top, please do not be offended,” Buckley

wrote in his letter to residents. “They are there for your protection and the protection of first responders.”

Police are also implementing temporary changes in some protocols, said Brookfield Police Chief Edward Petrak, such as suspending roll calls and asking officers to spend as little time as possible in the station to minimize personal contact.

Police departments around the area are also suspending some services they routinely provide, such as fingerprinting for job applications, station tours, ride-alongs and the like.

Non-emergency calls will for the time being be handled by police officers and dispatchers by phone and not in person. If someone comes to the police lobby and is concerned about privacy, they will be instructed to return to their car or home and talk with police by phone.

Police will continue to respond to emergency and other high-priority calls in person.

“This is an unprecedented event and you’re witnessing it firsthand because it’s not a one-day or one-week event,” Buckley said.

Emergency shelters open for homeless The housing insecure at great risk for COVID-19

As libraries, restaurants and public buildings have closed amid the COVID-19 pandemic, people experiencing homelessness have increasingly fewer places to seek shelter and safety.

In the western suburbs, the nonprofit agency BEDS Plus and others are opening emergency shelters to shield their clients during the ever-evolving coronavirus epidemic.

As of March 18, BEDS Plus will consolidate its shelter operations to one location.

“At this time, we are not publicly disclosing the location of our consolidated shelter site. Per CDC guidelines, we cannot accommodate more than 50 clients and our current system capacity already is at 75 beds per night,” said Valerie Vedral, BEDS Plus social media strategist.

BEDS Plus serves Brookfield, LaGrange and Western Springs among many other communities in the south and west suburbs.

Students, teachers confront sudden shift in learning Online, alternative methods of instruction in place until at least early April

Schools are shut down across Illinois, and no one really knows when they will open again.

All schools in Illinois were ordered closed

by Governor J.B. Pritzker in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, but most area school districts had already decided to close before the governor’s order. Area school districts tentatively plan for students to return in early April.

But with the Center for Disease Control now recommending that there be no public gatherings of more than 50 people for the next eight weeks, that early April return date is in doubt.

Brookfield-La Grange Park Elementary School District 95, Riverside Elementary District 96, Komarek School District 94 and

LaGrange-Brookfield School District 102 are all due to return to school on April 7.

While schools are closed area districts are implementing eLearning or at home learning. That could continue into April and beyond if schools cannot reopen as planned.

“I’m certainly telling teachers to think about options that go beyond April 7,” said District 96 Superintendent Martha RyanToye.

Riverside-Brookfield and Lyons Township high schools are also closed until at least April 7. Students at RBHS received word of the closure near the end of the school day on Friday.

“I think it is our best interest as a community to limit social interactions, but I’m still pretty shocked by how suddenly this all happened,” said RBHS senior Kenna Howorth.

“School is one of my favorite places, and I love my teachers and classes, so this is pretty surreal and sad for me that a large majority of my last semester in high school is going to be spent behind a computer screen.”

Howorth said many students were particularly pained because RBHS, like LTHS, has also canceled all after-school activities until April 7, leaving spring sports seasons in doubt.

“Girls were crying. It was really a sad scene,” Howorth said. “Everyone was devastated about spring athletics being canceled.”

Some students, especially younger ones, didn’t understand why school was being canceled, because they didn’t know anyone who was sick. No students or staff in area schools have been diagnosed with COVID-19, the illness that can result from exposure to the fast spreading Coronavirus.

“They’ve been asking for sleepovers.

They think it’s a snow day,” said Riverside resident Jennifer Fournier of her 8-year-old twins. “We’ve been trying to keep them on lockdown, trying to keep them away from watching too much TV.” Bennet Janunas, a 13-year-old seventhgrader at L.J. Hauser Junior High School, was upset because he was due to perform in “The Music Man,” Hauser’s spring musical, which had been scheduled to be performed on March 16 and 17.

“He was very upset at first and he didn’t understand why everyone was so scared,” Lisa Janunas, Bennet’s mother.

It is not certain whether “The Music Man” will be performed this year or not.

“It might depend on when we come back, but we’re leaving the sets up and everything

with the idea being that this is a postponement, not a cancelation,” Ryan-Toye said.

Students in Lyons-Brookfield School District 103 are not scheduled to return to class until April 13. School was open on Monday so that teachers could prepare home-learning packets to give their students, District 103 Superintendent Kristofer Rivera said.

“We do not have an eLearning system, because we don’t have enough devices,” Rivera said. “We’re about 450 to 500 devices short.”

Attendance Monday in District 103 was much lower than normal, although about 80 percent of George Washington Middle School students showed up for school.

Area schools will provide packed cold lunches to students receiving free or reduced-price lunches at school during the time that schools are closed.

Parents will have to come to schools to pick up their lunches. RBHS and District 95 will have lunches available twice a week with two meals being picked up on Monday and three on Wednesday.

North Riverside looks to launch branding initiative Effort would include new logo, website, social media presence

The village of North Riverside is looking to launch a branding effort that will include everything from a new village logo to a redesigned, more useful website to a robust social media presence to engage with residents and the commercial sector as it seeks to chart its future.

Last month, the village issued a request for proposals for website design and multimedia communications that lays out a multi-phase initiative to enhance communication with residents, promote economic development and “create multiple interactive paths for providing efficient municipal services while encouraging feedback from residents and local business operators.”

Proposals are due back to the village by March 30. Officials by April 15 will select and contact vendors to make presentations.

That comprehensive plan includes an overhaul of the village zoning code and will include a new land use plan to better respond to the present commercial/retail environment.

“This is all part of a planning process that will give us a roadmap as far out as the next 10 to 15 years,” Scarpiniti said.

Pritzker OKs remote meetings for local governments District 96 school board set to use new protocol on March 18

SPRINGFIELD — Gov. J.B. Pritzker used his emergency powers Monday to waive a portion of the Illinois Open Meetings Act to allow local governments and other public bodies to hold “remote” meetings to help control the spread of the novel coronavirus disease, COVID-19.

And, Riverside Elementary School District 96 will be one of the first to take advantage.

The school board is scheduled to meet March 18 at 7 p.m. at Hauser Junior High in Riverside, but now that plan has changed.

“I just received word that requirements specific to Open Meetings Act were modified during COVID-19,” Superintendent Martha Ryan-Toye said in an email to the

Landmark. “The board will convene virtually. There will be a way to access the meeting content.”

As of press time on Tuesday, just how that access would be granted wasn’t clear.

The allowance for “virtual” meetings was part of an executive order the governor issued March 16 also prohibiting public gatherings of 50 or more people, a new standard recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The order waives a portion of the Open Meetings Act that requires a quorum of members of a public body be “physically present” at the meeting location, and limits the circumstances under which an individual member may take part by video or audio conference.

It applies to city councils, county boards, school boards and all other public bodies of

state and local government.

Don Craven, legal counsel to the Illinois Press Association, noted in an email that Pritzker did not suspend other provisions of the Open Meetings Act that require public notice be given of all meetings and that require meetings to be open and accessible to the public and press.

“He did not suspend the requirement that the meeting be held in a place open and accessible to the public,” Craven said in the memo. “He did not suspend the requirement that the public be allowed to address the board, which means that there has to be a way for the public to participate by phone.”

The Open Meetings Act requires public bodies to provide public notice of a meeting, including the agenda, at least 48 hours in advance of the meeting. Craven encouraged all news outlets that cover those meet-

ings to immediately submit requests for notice of any special, emergency or regular meeting.

At the request of state Rep. Bob Morgan, D-Deerfield, the Illinois Press Association also drafted possible legislation allowing public bodies to meet without a physical quorum present while also ensuring that notice requirements, public participation and public access are protected.

“In times like these, the role of the local press and broadcasters is more important than ever,” Morgan said in a statement.

“While we need to take steps to ensure that members of public bodies can safely meet to do the important work of local government, we also need to take steps to make sure that the press and public know about these meetings, and are able to listen and participate in these meetings as well.”

District 96 and District 103 will provide bagged lunches every day. Parents in District 95 can pick up the lunches at S.E. Gross Middle School from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. and parents in District 96 can pick up lunches daily, at the door facing the Hauser parking lot, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Even District 96 families not eligible for free and reduced lunch can pick up free lunches at Hauser. Lunches will not be provided during spring break, which is next week for most area schools.

“We want to keep students safe; we want to keep students fed,” Ryan-Toye said. eLearning began on March 17 for RBHS students and March 18 for District 96 students. Third and fourth graders in District 96 will be given Chromebooks on March 18, so all District 96 students in third through eighth grades will have Chromebooks to access eLearning assignments.

Area teachers have worked frantically in the last few days to develop assignments

and activities that can be done at home.

Some will not require access to the Internet. Teachers at RBHS and District 96 were at work on Monday developing extended assignments.

“I met with every grade level group today,” Ryan-Toye said. “We had them working in socially separated small groups. We didn’t want our whole staff convened in one spot.”

The at-home learning will not necessarily approximate a regular school day, but students will have daily assignments for each of their subjects.

“Our goal is to support the continuity of learning for all children as much as possible,” Ryan-Toye said.

Many at-home assignments will not be counted toward a student’s grade.

“It is not required to participate in, and this is per ISBE [Illinois State Board of Education], it is not graded, nor does it count toward their grade,” Kuzniewski said.

Administrators will continue to work this week and after spring break. Since employees will be paid whether or not they show up for work, it is not certain how many custodians or lunch aides will show up for work.

“I may be pushing a mop or disinfecting or handing out lunches,” Rivera said. “It all depends, because it’s just one of those times where all hands are on deck.”

Zalewski named to national consumer protection committee

arrie Zalewski, chairwoman of the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC), has been appointed to serve on the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) Committee on Consumers and the Public Interest. NARUC President Brandon Presley made the appointment following the NARUC 2020 Winter Policy Summit in Washington, D.C. “I am honored to be chosen to serve on this very important committee,” said Zalewski, whose appointment was announced in February, in a press release. “As regulators, we must always be cognizant of the im-

pact our choices will have on the consumer.

I look forward to exchanging ideas and best practices with colleagues from across the country as we deal with a wide variety of issues while ensuring that consumer protection efforts remain at the forefront of the discussion.”

The primary focus of the Committee on Consumers and the Public Interest is to analyze the expanded and evolving role of state commissions in protecting consumer interests. With technology changing at a record pace and competitive energy and telecommunication markets continuing to grow committee members are addressing new consumer protection challenges.

Zalewski, a Riverside resident, was appointed chairwoman of the Illinois Commerce Commission on April 15, 2019, by Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker. She had previously served for 10 years as a regulator on the Illinois Pollution Control Board. Zalewski is also a member of the NARUC Committee on Electricity.

Riverside CSO honored for 50 years of service Bill Niesluchowski, well known in Riverside as the village’s community service officer, was honored at the March 5 village board meeting for his 50 years of service to the community.

Niesluchowski worked as a police officer in Riverside for 33 years, sworn in by then-Chief Donald Gossling in 1971, before retiring from that post in May 2003.

Following his retirement, Niesluchowski was hired on as a full-time community service officer and still works in that capacity on a part-time basis.

“People call the police department and ask for him personally, because they

know him,” said Police Chief Thomas Weitzel in presenting Niesluchowski with a certificate of achievement recognizing his decades of service.

Weitzel noted that Niesluchowski has also been called upon both locally and by other communities to assist in numerous cases where knowledge of sign language is required.

“Bill has come in in the middle of the night to assist other agencies with everything from finding lost children to assisting in criminal investigations when they needed somebody who could sign,” said Weitzel.

Fragility and resilience

W

hat a moment. Frightening, frustrating, infuriating in about equal measure.

Our lives are not our own. Seems like an oldfashioned saying. But now our lives have been grabbed by the coronavirus pandemic and equally by the grotesque incompetence and mental imbalance of Donald Trump.

Don’t get us started.

We’ll bounce off the walls of our highly contained spaces.

With Trump greasing the skids, we’ve watched systems that appeared semi-sturdy collapse in heaps. Who needs a pandemic task force in the White House? There’s not a plan for enough respirators? The United State of America cannot test 10,000 people in a month for the virus but South Korea can test 10,000 in a day? We need to debate if our greedy private health care system will cover the cost of a test in a pandemic? And not to pile on, but Donald Trump, of all people, is actually the president during a pandemic.

So much fragility. So many reasons to think we’re simply screwed. And we may yet be collectively screwed.

But over the past week as Trump has blathered and confounded, waxed on about the coming miracle that will end the pandemic and sweet-talk the stock market into submission, we have also watched governors, including Illinois’ J.B. Pritzker, rise up and lead.

In each of the towns we cover we have, to a routinely high level, watched as school superintendents, mayors, nonprofit leaders, village managers, ministers, cops and teachers, have stepped up to make hard, hard choices. Schools closed. Libraries closed, Rec departments closed. Churches closed. Restaurant dining rooms closed.

Who would have thought we’d see the day when neighboring villages like Oak Park and River Forest declare states of emergency?

While stunned, we have watched families and individuals comply, grateful for leaders who lead, who understand this is the most critical moment to limit the spread of this virus.

Except for the crazy people celebrating St. Pat’s. Hope you enjoyed that last beer.

This is where the resilience comes through. We’re scared for our health, for our kids and for our folks, for our jobs and our paychecks, and we know, even if we can’t exactly grasp the dimensions, that the sacrifice is hardly even underway.

We don’t know what this week brings. Not much left to close down. But there is more damage, more unravelling ahead. We do know that.

It is in our communities where we will find the strength.

And clearly it is where we will find our leaders. Smart, empathic, steady, caring. These are our neighbors who offer up their service. We raise them up with our votes. Sure, they’re imperfect. We’d like to shake some of them at times. But they are decent, thoughtful and, most all of the time, without the ego that sinks Trump every damned day.

Hard times ahead. Pain to come. We will come through this changed in many ways. But come through it we will.

Wash your hands, take a drink

W

hat a week this has been (wash my hands-take a drink) for everybody. Last minute decisions were made to cancel or postpone the monthly Lions Club meeting, the Lions Club Chicken Dinner and the RB Educational Foundation Telethon (wash my hands-take a drink).

Listen to the medical professionals; they know what they are talking about. Listen to the people in office and hope they know what they are talking about.

Being cautious, many places and events have been canceled so as not to have too many people in one place at one time. Mass at St. Mary’s and other religious services were canceled.

Watched a few minutes of Mass on TV, but it wasn’t quite the same. No communion, but also there was no collection. Of course, Catholic guilt crept in since I didn’t feel I should be watching Mass in my pj’s in bed. Change the station (Wash my hands-take a drink).

However, what wasn’t changed was voting. By the time you read this I will have completed my duties as an election judge in Precinct 8 at the Blythe Park School library, not a real big space.

What should they have done? They should have extend-

ed voting at the large venues where early voting was being held, and accepted mail voting until at least the end of the week. So you wouldn’t have had the results Tuesday night? Is that what is important?

This is my educated opinion as a long time election judge, but then again they didn’t ask me and seldom, if ever, do. They are sending wipes and sanitizing products. Thanks, guys, it wasn’t covered in my training session. I’ll let you know how it goes. (Wash my hands-take a drink).

This might be a good time to catch up on a few things. I’m already a week behind on my Lenten prayer book and there is that book I want to finish. Good time to touch bases with friends, and there is always the dining room table that needs attention.

It also means you can fill out the census, which is very important. The counting determines how we are represented in Congress. It makes sense to participate in the census.

Remember behind the clouds the sun is still shining.

St. Patrick’s Day didn’t get its usual bug celebration, but March 19 is St. Joseph’s Day and I bet you can get a St. Joseph cake (zeppole) at Vesuvio’s bakery in North Riverside.

Stay well, wash your hands and take a drink (I think wine counts).

Fed up with red-light cameras Recently, I received in the mail a red-light camera ticket. There were several pictures of my car along with a date and time that I supposedly ran a red light, making a right turn.

I say “supposedly” because I know that I was working on the day they had on the ticket. However, my oldest son lives with me and occasionally drops me off at my job and then uses the car. That was the case on this day.

However, he did not recall going to North Riverside on the day in question or what errand he could have been running. We went by the North Riverside police station. They showed us a moving picture of my car going through the light.

Now I know this young man and have driven with him

many times. He is a very cautious driver and always stops before turning. But it seems that we could not dispute the video. So my son decided to pay the ticket because we would both have to take a day off work to contest it officially. We truly feel ripped off.

We have read all of your articles about the political connections and corruption associated with these re-light cameras, but there is nothing we can do.

However, this is what we will not do: We will not go to North Riverside or Berwyn or any of the towns which still have these cameras up and running. They have lost our business.

Rev. Ronald H. Anglim, 81 Former St. Barbara associate pastor Rev. Ronald H. Anglim, pastor emeritus of St. Peter Parish in Antioch and former associate at St. Barbara Parish in Brookfield, died March 7, 2020, at the age of 81.

Father Anglim was born on Feb. 6, 1939, in Chicago. He atREV. RONALD ANGLIM tended St. Ignatius High School, Quigley Preparatory Seminary in Chicago and the University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary in Mundelein.

He was ordained to the priesthood on April 29, 1965, by the Most Rev. Cletus O’Donnell, and he celebrated his first solemn Mass on May 2 of the same year at St. Ethelreda Church in Chicago.

After ordination, Father Anglim was assistant pastor at St. Giles Parish in Oak Park, and St. Francis Borgia Parish on Addison Street in Chicago. He continued to serve

Father Anglim then served as pastor for the following parishes: Holy Family Parish in North Chicago, St. Joseph Parish in Libertyville and St. Peter Parish in Antioch. In 2009, he was named pastor emeritus. Anglim also served as chaplain of the Navy League of the United States.

A funeral Mass was celebrated March 11 at St. Cletus Church in LaGrange. Interment was at St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery in Chicago.

Sally A. Danihel, 64 Administrative clerk for the village of North Riverside Sally A. “Sara” Danihel (nee Zappa), 64, a longtime resident of North Riverside, died suddenly on March 9, 2020 after a brief illness.

Ms. Danihel was a devoted employee of the village of North Riverside, serving as administrative clerk, as well as taking on several other duties at the Village Commons.

She enjoyed cooking and dancing, loved

her family and sometimes took her chances at the slots. Sally was a familiar face at the village hall and her absence is already being noticed. She’ll be missed by the residents of North Riverside.

Ms. Danihel was SALLY A. DANIHEL the wife and beloved ‘Honey” to Edward Danihel; “Mama” to Kelly (Michael) Doerr and Kristine (Patrick) Sheridan; “Nonnie” to Macy Jane Sheridan; and the sister of Anna Marie (the late Robert) Fischer.

RBHS boys hoops season ends versus Bogan

By BOB SKOLNIK and JAMES KAY They stayed close for a half, but in the second half the Riverside Brookfield boys’ basketball team couldn’t keep up with top-seeded Bogan as the Bengals ended the Bulldogs season with a 71-44 lopsided loss at a IHSA Class 3A Hinsdale South sectional semifinal game Tuesday evening in Darien.

“A really good team took it to us today,” Reingruber said of Bogan which finished second in the state last year in Class 3A losing the state championship game in overtime to East Saint Louis.

The fourth-seeded Bulldogs (22-11) started fast with senior Dylan Meehan hitting a three-pointer on the first possession of the game. After the Bulldogs led 5-2, Bogan (29-3) went on an 8-0 run to lead 10-5, but the Bulldogs battled back with a three-point play by Meehan and a put back by Jamir Truman to tie the game at 10.

After trailing 18-15 at the end of the first

quarter, a three-pointer by guard Ryan Gaynor on the first possession of the second quarter tied the game again. A driving layup by Paul Zilinskas tied the game for the last time at 22 with 6:03 left in the second quarter. 41 seconds later a three-point play

by Bogan’s Darrion Jones put the Bengals ahead to from then on.

Truman scored inside to bring the Bulldogs to within one at 25-24 with 4:32 remaining in the second quarter but after that the Bulldogs went cold going 7:37 without a point. During that time, which spanned the end of the second quarter and the first 3:04 of the third quarter, Bogan outscored the Bulldogs 11-0 to take control.

Bogan led 30-24 at the half as sophomore J.P. Hanley and Meehan both missed the front end of one and one free throws late in the first half. The free throw misses continued in the third quarter when Truman missed two free throws that could have pulled the Bulldogs to within four.

“When you want to beat a great team like Bogan there’s very little room for error,” Reingruber said. “Those are shots we need to make.”

Hanley finally broke the dry spell by hit-

ting a three-pointer for his only points of the game to pull the Bulldogs within nine with 4:56 left in the third quarter but Bogan responded with an 11-2 run to blow the game open.

All Area player Antoine Bloxton, who didn’t start the game and came in midway through the first quarter, led Bogan with 25 points (16 came in the second half). Kyndall Davis added 14 for Bogan.

Meehan led the Bulldogs with 13 points, Zilinskas finished with 12 and Truman scored 10. Hanley, Gaynor, and senior Joseph Mieczkowski each scored three points for the Bulldogs, each hitting a three-pointer.

The Bulldogs had trouble getting open looks against Bogan’s quick and long defenders and made only five of 17 shots in the second half.

“Shots weren’t dropping for us,” Reingruber said. “They’re really good. They come after you in waves.”

Despite the loss the Bulldogs were proud on their season. Without a single returning starter, the Bulldogs, bolstered by the transfer of Zilinskas from Richards where he had started since he was a sophomore, shared their third consecutive conference title and

won 22 gams and a regional championship.

Wins over Fenwick and Oak Park and River Forest High School opened eyes and were particularly satisfying. They also enjoyed a second half run where they won 13 of their last 16 regular season games.

After the game, Truman was disappointed with the loss and the end of the season but was proud of the season that the Bulldogs had.

“It sucks of course, but we tried our hardest,” Truman said. “We gave it everything we got this season. Nobody really expected us to be good this season, but we just pretty much proved everybody wrong.”

Truman, a 6-5 forward, was one of the players who emerged this year.

“Jamir has been one of the most improved kids we’ve had in our program over a fouryear span,” Reingruber said. “He’s a great kid and a super hard worker and I believe he’s going to play at the next level at a Division III school and I believe the best is yet to come for him.”

“This senior group means a ton to me,” Reingruber said. “They’ve been winners every step of the way. They’re gym rats, they love being in the gym, great kids, great teammates, super fun to be around every single day and I’m going to miss them.”

As usual the underclass RBHS teams each won more than 20 games this season and next year the Bulldogs will rebuild around Hanley, their only returning starter who showed a lot of talent and potential as a sophomore starting on varsity.

“John Paul is obviously going to carry a big load for us, but we have some talented juniors and some talented sophomores,” Reingruber said. “The expectations will be the same, still high expectations for our guys.

Expectations will be very high still.”

IHSA cancels state tournament; Fenwick’s season ends After beating Westinghouse 94-71in the IHSA Class 3A sectional semifinals on March 10, Fenwick’s boys basketball team left St. Ignatius’ gym with the expectation it would be competing for a chance at a state championship later in the week.

However, the IHSA announced on March 12 that it canceled its state series due to concerns about COVID-19, prematurely ending the Friars’ season.

“Obviously, our initial reaction was that we were all disappointed,” said Fenwick head coach Staunton Peck in a phone interview with Wednesday Journal. “But after the NCAA canceled its tournament and you saw what other leagues were doing because [of COVID-19], I would be lying if I said I was surprised this happened. With this situation you can’t be shocked by anything, but it also doesn’t mean it’s not a disappointment.”

While the magnitude of the pandemic makes this past winter sports season seem minuscule, the timing could not have come worse for Fenwick. The Friars outscored their opponents 262-148 in the first three games of the postseason and seemed to have rid themselves of the injury bug with the return of seniors Cal Malcow and Ryan Planek.

On top of recovering from prior injuries, Fenwick also saw sophomores David Geiser and Max Reese emerge as game-changing threats for the team throughout the season.

Geiser especially took a leap in the playoffs and was an excellent complementary piece from the perimeter when defenses brought extra attention to Trey Pettigrew and Bryce Hopkins.

“I mean even in eighth grade, [Geiser] could always shoot it,” said Peck. “He has reached a point where he is shooting at another level right now. He’s one of the best shooters in the area. It’s hard for sopho-

S P O R T S mores at the beginning of the year since they have never played varsity and getting used to the size, speed and closeouts. He got used to all of those things and by the end of the year, he wasn’t playing like a sophomore.”

The cancelation of the state series has a greater impact than just the teams that were going to compete in it. For prospects like Pettigrew, it was a chance to get looked at by recruiters who would go down to watch the state’s best players go toe-to-toe with one another.

On top of missing a chance at state, the athletic clothing company Under Armour canceled its national tournament in Atlanta where scouts seek out the best high school prospects.

“Most recruiting will heat up around the start of AAU season and the first two sessions getting canceled took a big hit on that,” said Pettigrew during a phone interview with Wednesday Journal. “Missing a chance at state hurts, too, so missing those is a little detrimental [to Pettigrew getting recruited], but I will pick it back up.”

While Pettigrew’s two-way ability and two more years of high school eligibility still put him in a good position for elite colleges to recruit him, there are other shortterm worries that he and other high school prospects are dealing with during this time.

Finding gyms to train in to stay in shape for the AAU season is one problem some of these players will face as social distancing becomes stricter.

Even with the AAU circuit coming up this summer, this is a difficult pill for Fenwick’s team to swallow. The Friars will bring back Hopkins, Pettigrew, Geiser and Reese next season but will lose key seniors in Walsh (who started for Fenwick alongside Pettigrew in the backcourt) and Malcow who provided meaningful minutes off the bench.

Planek was injured for most of the season and was going to be a starter heading into the season. He didn’t make it back until the last few games of the season.

“No one thought we would make it this far,” said Pettigrew. “Before the season, I think we all knew that we had a lot of power packed behind our punch. We are going to come back stronger and more hungry, because this year could have been our year to win state and next year could be ours as well.”

Peck said that the team will meet up at some point so that there is some form of finality to the season.

“There are things happening right now that are more important than basketball,” said Peck. “But I think it is important for [the team] to close the season out in some way. I remember competing for a state championship when I was in high school and that experience is something I will never forget.

[The team] won’t get that chance but we are going to do something.”

The Village may impose a One Percent (1%) retailers’ occupation tax, a One Percent (1%) service occupation tax and/or a One Percent (1%) hotel operators’ occupation tax, as permitted by the Law, in the Proposed Harlem Avenue Business District No. 2 for the planning, execution, and implementation of the business district plan, and to pay for business district project costs as set forth in the business district plan.
