Riverside trustees on Feb. 17 made good on a plan that’s been in the works for almost a year, approving a contract with Amita-Presence Behavioral Health (PBH) to provide crisis intervention services for its department of public safety and giving police and paramedics the ability to provide professional help for those experiencing mental health crises 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The agreement with PBH is not a full-blown co-responder model, where crisis workers respond with police to mental health calls, but it does give Riverside the ability to provide crisis workers more quickly.

Riverside trustees voted unanimously on Feb. 17 to make Juneteenth – the date Black Americans have celebrated for generations to mark the 1865 emancipation of the nation’s last enslaved individuals – an official paid holiday for village employees.

The village joins just a handful of Illinois municipalities that have made Juneteenth,

which is celebrated on June 19, an official holiday. Broadview made the date a paid holiday in 2020, while the Oak Park Public Library also officially recognizes Juneteenth as a paid holiday for employees.

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed legislation passed by the General Assembly last year to make Juneteenth a paid holiday for state workers and public school teachers, while President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act

designating June 19 a holiday for federal employees.

ComEd will remove the power pole north of Brookfield Avenue immediately west of Salt Creek (above), eliminating overhead power lines there as the village makes way for a new bridge over the river.

ComEd to pay about $157,000 for re-routing power line The village of Brookfield and ComEd officially have agreed on just how much the utility company’s cost share will be to open cut the Salt Creek stream bed in order to run a water main and an electric line through the trench.

On Feb. 14, village trustees voted 5-0 to approve an intergovernmental agreement that gives ComEd a permanent easement to maintain the power line, which will run underground through a portion of the Brookfield Village Hall property and then under Salt Creek to the west side. A power pole north of Brookfield Avenue on the west side of the creek will be removed to eliminate overhead power lines there.

In exchange, ComEd has agreed to pay one-third of the approximately $470,000 total cost for the trench-cutting operation, which was made necessary to re-route a section of water main that runs under Salt Creek at Brookfield Avenue.

A new $4.5 million Brookfield Avenue bridge to be constructed later this spring across Salt Creek has a larger footprint than the old bridge, resulting in the need to reroute the water main to the north.

Initially, officials had planned to drill a

channel under Salt Creek with an auger and place the water main there, but the auger struck a solid object about 10 feet below the river bed, forcing an alternate plan and delaying the project for months.

After the village obtained permission to open-cut the stream bed, ComEd inquired whether it could also re-route a power line through the same open-cut trench, eliminating an overhead line that crosses Brookfield Avenue from south to north.

As a result of the intergovernmental agreement approved last week, ComEd’s share of the cost will be roughly $157,000.

Construction crews are expected to complete the water main/power line re-routing project within the next few weeks, depending on weather.

A series of large pumps have been placed on the crest of the river bank east of Salt Creek. Those will pump the river water around the work area at a rate of 50,000 gallons per minute while an aquadam is in place to allow for a backhoe to excavate the dry river bed and for the water main and electric lines to be laid.

Sometime in 1990 in a classroom at Oak Park and River Forest High School, Caty Stegemann sat down to answer a series of questions on a career aptitude test.

Little did she know responding to the set of questions would unlock a lifelong passion for helping others live healthier lives and becoming a successful business owner.

Group show opens at RAC

District 96 to offer full-day kindergarten in 2022-23 School board votes unanimously to switch from half-day model

Starting next fall, working parents of kindergartners in Riverside Elementary School District 96 will no longer have to scramble to find daycare for the portion of the school day during which kindergarteners are not in school.

On Feb. 16 the District 96 Board of Education unanimously voted to switch to full-day kindergarten for the 2022-23 academic year.

Parents in District 96 have long complained about the lack of full-day kindergarten. Before the vote, school board members David Barsotti and Lynda Murphy spoke of how surprised they were when they moved

to Riverside and discovered that District 96 didn’t offer full-day kindergarten.

“Fifteen years ago I was shocked that we didn’t have it, and I am so glad that we can be a part of the board that explored this,” Murphy said after noting that the change is coming much too late to help her, since her two children are now in high school. “I’m really excited that this day has come.”

Board members said their decision to switch to full-day kindergarten was influenced by the recommendation of a district committee formed earlier this school year, which recommended the switch to full-day kindergarten in a lengthy report and discussion with the board two weeks ago.

Board member Joel Marhoul and board President Dan Hunt said they were initially skeptical about the benefits of full-day kindergarten, but the committee’s report and input was convincing.

“What ultimately tipped the balance for me was the teachers and their analysis and their discussions just about the advantages

of extra time with the kids, how much benefit that provides” Marhoul said.

Hunt agreed, adding that he was especially persuaded by comments of members of the committee who had taught both full-day and half-day kindergarten.

“There was not an ounce of skepticism or on-the-fence amongst them,” Hunt said.

Barsotti also said the committee’s input convinced him that full-day kindergarten was worth the cost.

“I could go either way, but it was based on the work that the committee did and their recommendation,” Barsotti said.

Implementing full-day kindergarten will be expensive. It is projected to cost the district at least an additional $434,385 next year, and that’s assuming that all seven new teachers who are hired will be on the lowest rung of the salary scale, which is based on experience.

Four of the new teachers will be kindergarten teachers, and the district will also hire one additional teacher in three areas:

art, music and physical education.

“Half a million dollars is not peanuts,” Hunt said.

Marhoul noted that the district is financially strong and can afford the expense.

“Our finances are good [and] although a half million dollars a year extra is not insignificant, in many ways the community has already been paying for this,” Marhoul said.

Recent expansion projects at the district’s four elementary schools have created the space to accommodate full-day kindergarten.

Parents who believe that their kindergartener is not ready for a full day of school or don’t want to send their child to school for a full day will still have the option for their child to go to kindergarten for half a day in the mornings, although there will not be a separate half-day kindergarten class.

District 96 will make a kindergarten registration video presentation available on demand on March 9 after 5 p.m. at district96. org.

Tiff over parking space leads to battery arrest North Riverside police charged a 62-yearold man with battery after he reportedly poked a neighbor with his snow shovel and threatened to damage his neighbor’s car unless he moved it on Feb. 17 at about 6:45 p.m.

The victim said he arrived home and parked his car on the street in front of his neighbor’s home. Once he exited the car, the neighbor, who was out shoveling snow, allegedly said, “Move your car or I will f--- it up.”

The neighbor then allegedly struck the victim in the chest with the snow shovel.

According to the police report, the victim said he then grabbed the shovel to move it out of the way at which time his neighbor punched him in the face, injuring his left eye. The victim then wrestled the shovel out of his neighbor’s hands and struck him, knocking him to the ground. The victim then called police.

Police said that when they questioned the neighbor about the incident, he told them that while he did hit the victim with the shovel, he only “touched him.” Paramedics also took a look at the injuries to the man’s face as a result of the victim punching him, but he declined further treatment.

Creepy chicken gag A resident of the 8600 block of Riverside Avenue, Brookfield, contacted police to report a creepy incident involving a cooked chicken.

The resident arrived home on the night of Feb. 14, Valentine’s Day, and found on

her doorstep a cooked chicken with a note attached to it. The note reportedly was adorned with a smiley face and the said, “Sincerely, your ding dong ditcher. Happy Valentines.”

The resident told police she realized that the chicken had been one she had previously cooked and had thrown away. The bag it had been in was found near her garage.

Package theft, tampering ■ Brookfield police responded to the 3500 block of Vernon Avenue on the afternoon of Feb. 16 after a resident called to report that someone had stolen packages that had been

The victim said he received an email from Amazon at about 2 p.m. stating the packages had been delivered. The email contained a photo of the packages in the building’s vestibule. When the victim went to retrieve the packages about 25 minutes later, they were gone.

According to the police report, the door to the apartment’s building’s vestibule was unlocked.

■ A North Riverside woman called police on Feb. 16 to report that at around noon she observed, on camera, a neighbor opening a package that had been left for her in the hallway of her apartment complex.

According to the police report, the offender opened the package after seeing the label, dug through it and left it where it was originally placed. Nothing was taken, but police said charges were pending.

District 95 school board votes to livestream meetings Members split on the value of broadcasts, say meetings open to all

In the future, meetings of the BrookfieldLaGrange Park District 95 Board of Education will be livestreamed. After pondering the issue for a couple of months, at its Feb. 10 meeting the District 95 school board voted 5-2 in favor of livestreaming its meetings.

Melissa Biskupic, Barb Garvey, Jackie Jordan, Elizabeth Loerup and Meaghan McAteer voted in favor of livestreaming the meetings, while board President Katie Mulcrone and board member Jessica Filbey voted against.

The issue had been contentious. The board had livestreamed meetings for part of last year but stopped doing so in the fall. In response, Jamie Baker, the mother of a kindergartener at Brook Park School, organized an online petition drive in favor of livestreaming meetings. Baker presented the petition, which was signed by 116 people, to the district in November.

After the vote, Superintendent Mark Kuzniewski said that it will take some time to purchase the equipment, adding it will likely not arrive in time to be used during the March 10 school board meeting.

“They’re not just sitting on shelves, they’re not readily available,” Kuzniewski said. “I will commit to making sure that we, at a minimum, [broadcast the meeting on] Zoom.”

Appellate court declines to rule on mask mandates Pritzker appeals, requests ‘expedited review’ of court decision

Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s administration said Feb. 18 it will ask the Illinois Supreme Court for an “expedited review” of an appellate court’s decision not to rule on a lower court order that invalidated COVID-19 mitigation measures for roughly 170 school districts that were parties in a set of consolidated lawsuits.

Late on Feb. 17, the 4th District Court of Appeals said it would not review the temporary restraining order issued Feb. 4 by a Sangamon County judge, calling the issue “moot” because the emergency rules issued earlier by the Illinois Department of Public Health have expired and a legislative panel in charge of reviewing such rules had declined to extend them.

But the court also said individual school districts remain free to adopt their own mitigation policies, independent of any executive orders or state emergency rules.

“The administration is working with the attorney general to request an expedited review of this decision from the Supreme Court,” Pritzker’s press secretary Jordan Abudayyeh said in a statement Friday morning. “In the meantime, the governor urges everyone to continue following the doctors’ advice to wear masks so students can remain safely learning in classrooms,

and is encouraged that the court made it clear that school districts can continue to keep their own mitigations in place.”

Attorney General Kwame Raoul also issued a statement saying he, too, was disappointed by the decision.

“The appellate court’s failure to address the important legal issues in question has added to the confusion resulting from the circuit court’s decision prioritizing a relatively small group of plaintiffs who refuse to acknowledge science or the need for public health measures to protect vulnerable Illinois residents,” Raoul said.

the Pritzker administration is preparing to roll back the statewide indoor mask mandate on Feb. 28. Pritzker announced that plan on Feb. 9 but said he intended to keep the mandate in place for schools.

Timeline of cases On Feb. 4, Sangamon County Circuit Judge Raylene Grischow issued a temporary restraining order blocking the enforcement of mask and vaccine mandates and the exclusion from school of people deemed close contacts with COVID-19 patients without giving those students and

employees due process.

That order applied to the roughly 170 school districts who were named in the consolidated lawsuits. There are 852 public school districts in Illinois, plus numerous private school systems covered by the rules.

The cases were filed in various counties in September after the Illinois Department of Public Health issued emergency rules mandating that masks be worn in school settings, that unvaccinated school staff would have to submit to regular testing, and that students and staff deemed to be “close contacts” with people infected by COVID-19 be excluded from school buildings and events for a period of time.

Those emergency rules were issued in response to a series of Pritzker’s executive orders.

However, while the administration was appealing that decision to the 4th District, the emergency rules that IDPH had issued in September expired, and on Tuesday, Feb. 15, the legislative Joint Committee on Administrative Rules voted not to extend them, citing concerns about the restraining order and the pending appeal.

D96 school board votes to retain mask policy, for now Local high schools, D103, Komarek move toward mask-optional

Superintendent Martha Ryan-Toye reported that 70.24 percent of District 96 students have been vaccinated against COVID-19. Vaccination rates in individual schools range from a high of 78.4 percent at Hauser Junior High to a low of 59.84 percent at Ames Elementary School.

Students and teachers will have to continue wearing masks in school, for now at least, in Riverside Elementary School District 96.

On Feb. 16 the District 96 Board of Education voted unanimously to keep the district’s indoor masking requirement in place. However, the school board will reconsider the issue at its next meeting on March 2.

School board members cited their local authority to run schools as the basis for their decision, so that District 96’s policy will not be dependent on whatever happens with a lawsuit challenging Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s executive order requiring masking in schools.

“There’s just so much in flux right now,” said school board member David Barsotti said. “Granted the numbers are going down, but we just need to see where things are going.”

Some board members said that COVID cases had not declined enough to remove the mask requirement. Committing to review the mask requirement in two weeks allows the board to see how the legal challenge to Pritzker’s order plays out and to observe the experiences of other school districts that have already made masks optional.

“This continuing protection allows us to maintain a level of safety for our children, some of whom cannot get vaccinated,” school board member Joel Marhoul said.

“We do intend to maintain in-person learning as much as possible and avoid going remote.”

Board members say that they want to see what happens with local COVID transmission rates and if guidance from the federal Centers for Disease Control changes.

“District 96 has consistently used public health information to inform our decisions, so I personally would be in favor of listening to the experts tell us what is appropriate for children,” said board member Shari Klyber.

“We still have a high rate of transmission.”

But there appears to be a recognition that an end universal masking in schools is inevitable, and school board President Dan Hunt said the board must be ready to reconsider its policy as circumstances change and evolve.

“It is important that we revisit this as soon

The 4th District panel, however, cited the JCAR action as its reason for not ruling in the appeal, saying the underlying rules covered by the restraining order were no longer in place.

Before voting, the board heard from three teachers who asked to keep the mask requirement in place, citing health and safety concerns and the value of continuity in the classroom.

“We have worked so hard to put procedures and expectations in place to create a safe learning environment for your children throughout the pandemic,” said Jennie Popovic, a teacher at L.J. Hauser Junior High School.

She said removing the mask mandate would cause anxiety for many students. She added that some teachers are immunocompromised and some students have siblings at home who are too young to get vaccinated.

“Teaching puts me at risk for COVID,” Popovic said. “I have a weakened immune system. … By coming to work each day to

something that I love, to teach your children I’m putting my health at risk.”

During the public comment portion of the meeting the board also heard from six parents, via email, who urged the district to go mask optional. Three of those letters were virtually identical.

Those opposed to mask mandate pointed to other school districts, states and countries that no longer require face masks in school. They also said that vaccines are widely available and that COVID is here to stay and that is rarely severe in children.

“Everyone will have a date with COVID; it can’t be avoided,” said a comment submitted by Melissa Parker. A couple of other parent emails made the same point with nearly identical language.

Mask opponents also said that if the district went mask optional those who wish to continue to wear face masks would be free to do so.

The leaders of the teachers union reported that 61.2 percent of its members said they would not be comfortable in a classroom with unmasked students.

Meanwhile, Riverside-Brookfield High School has said it will make mask wearing optional on Feb. 28. The school informed parents and students by email of that intention on Feb. 16 and posted a copy of the notice its website on Feb. 17.

However, the school district effectively went mask-optional this week, according to a Feb. 21 announcement, which referred to this week as a “transition” period during which masks are “strongly encouraged … but not required.” The update was posted on the RBHS website on Feb. 21.

RBHS’ move to a mask recommended on Feb. 28 puts it in line with Brookfield-LaGrange Park District 95, which is also planning to move to a mask-recommended policy on Feb. 28.

Meanwhile, at their meeting on Feb. 22 after the Landmark’s press time, the Lyons Township High School District 204 Board of Education was slated to take a vote on a new COVID-19 mitigation plan that would make mask wearing “strongly recommended” but not required as of Feb. 28.

The Lyons-Brookfield Elementary School District 103 Board of Education was also poised to vote on Feb. 22 to remove its mask mandate for students and staff. If the school board votes to approve the change, masks would be recommended but not required in school buildings immediately.

On Feb. 20, Komarek School District 94 Superintendent Todd Fitzgerald sent a letter to families stating Komarek School will “strong recommend” wearing masks beginning Feb. 28 but that masks will not be mandated.

The agreement with PBH follows in the wake of retired Riverside Police Chief Thomas Weitzel who initially emphasized the importance of having access to mental health crisis caseworkers to respond to psychiatric emergencies back in 2020.

Although at the time Weitzel was referring to groundbreaking programs in Denver and Eugene, Oregon, which have well-funded mental health crisis response teams that work parallel and sometimes in partnership with police in emergency situations.

Weitzel at the time called on Illinois lawmakers to create legislation and funding for such teams. Though the request did not result in anything tangible at that level, Buckley took up the cause when he ascended to the top public safety role in Riverside following Weitzel’s retirement last May. “I felt this was the best fit for Riverside,” Buckley said.

Brookfield ratifies 3-year deal with public works union Brookfield trustees voted 5-0 on Feb. 14 to ratify a new three-year contract with its public works employees after union members voted unanimously to accept the deal. The previous contract with members of Teamsters Union Local 705 expired Dec. 31, 2021.

The new deal, approved by village trustees without comment, runs through the end of 2024 and ensures base pay raises annually of 2.5 percent, although step raises also included in the salary schedule will bump those annual raise higher for those who qualify for the step increases.

The 17 public works employees who belong to the bargaining unit are each classified in one of three salary “ranges.” Annual pay on the lowest salary range starts at $56,893.

That same employee by the third year of the contract, as the result of annual step raises, will make $62,678, a total increase of 10 percent versus the 7.5 percent guaranteed by annual base pay raises.

Salaries for the other two pay ranges begin at $65,624 and $71,586, respectively, and top out at $80,265 and $82,837.

The new contract also clarifies how union employees are to be compensated for working on holidays, with a distinction made for New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, July 4, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. If an employee works one of those holidays, they are entitled to two times their rate of pay in addition to receiving holiday pay.

On the other six holidays listed in the contract, one of which is the employee’s birthday, the employee is to be paid one and a half times their rate of pay in addition to holiday pay.

Another change in the contract, is an increase in the “on-call” pay for foremen, which was upped to $100 every three months from $80.

“I was pissed,” Ballerine said. “But it didn’t occur to me until three years later-- if my son had been Black he could be dead. That’s when it clicked in.”

Ballerine also began last year actively seeking out municipal leaders in surrounding communities like Broadview, where he struck up a friendship with Mayor Katrina Thompson, and Forest Park, Maywood, Bellwood and Westchester.

He and other Riverside residents participated in the Tour de Proviso bike ride last summer, getting to know their neighbors and their towns. He also urged participation in food and book drives in Proviso Township benefiting residents of neighboring communities.

“I’m trying to get our residents to see other communities,” Ballerine said.

Last year, Ballerine mulled creating a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Commission in Riverside, but didn’t quite know how to pull it off.

He then learned that Thompson spearheaded an effort in Broadview to have Juneteenth recognized as a paid holiday for village employees.

“I thought to myself, ‘We can do this,’” said Ballerine. Other elected officials in Riverside signaled their support for the idea.

While 2022 will be Riverside’s first official Juneteenth, the date was marked locally in 2020 during a Black Lives Matter march through North Riverside and Riverside. The march ended at Guthrie Park, where one of the march organizers read the Emancipation Proclamation and participants knelt for nearly nine minutes in memory of George Floyd, whose death at the hands of police in Minneapolis triggered outrage and protests throughout the nation in May and June 2020.

While Juneteenth has been celebrated by Black Americans, the occasion escaped the attention of white America for more than a century.

Texas was the first state in the union to observe Juneteenth in 1980. Florida, Oklahoma and Minnesota followed suit in the 1990s, with another 45 states voting to observe or commemorate Juneteenth after 2000.

The local proposal to seek paid holiday status for Juneteenth came from Village President Joseph Ballerine, whose own personal journey over the past year or so led him to the belief that Riverside should embrace equity and inclusion.

Ballerine said he was encouraged to participate in a Race Conscious Dialogues class in Oak Park, which was an eye-opener.

“It brought this idea to me of privilege, stuff I never thought about,” Ballerine said.

An incident a few years back where one of Ballerine’s sons was stopped by a police officer around midnight for speeding – on his bicycle – was another pivotal moment. The officer reportedly stopped Ballerine’s son because he was wearing a hoodie and a backpack, and because the area had experienced a number of car and garage break-ins.

ov. J.B. Pritzker has appealed a downstate circuit court ruling (and a punt by the state’s appellate court) challenging his mask mandate for schools, but the truth is mask mandates appear to be over, and that toothpaste is not going back into the tube.

School districts, including several local ones, announced in the past week that they are going “mask recommended” no later than Feb. 28, the date Pritzker was lifting the mandate for most indoor spaces, save schools.

Masks are off, for better or worse – we’ll no doubt find out that verdict in the coming months in terms of COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths – and people across the U.S. and elsewhere in the world have determined that it’s time to simply live with the disease in our midst.

There will be a healthy minority of people, we’re guessing, who will continue to wear masks, especially in crowded spaces among complete strangers. There are many who have not so much as caught a cold in the past two years due to masking, and intend to keep that going.

Many more will not wear masks, but we hope it will not be too much to ask – although it always appears it is – for them to leave those continuing to mask-up alone.

The omicron variant surge is ebbing. As of Feb. 18, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health the rolling seven-day average of daily cases was down to 2,985 from its pandemic high of more than 32,000 on Jan. 12.

That’s huge drop, but the Feb. 18 rate is not insignificant. At the height of the delta wave late last summer, the highest seven-day rolling case rate was about 4,300 cases.

And while omicron has been widely held out as a “mild” strain of the disease, that’s really only been the case for those who are fully vaccinated, because the omicron surge was absolutely deadly.

According to the Cook County Medical Examiner, 14 Brookfield residents died from COVID -19 between Oct. 26, 2021 and Feb. 13, 2022. That’s less than four months.

The same number of Brookfield residents died of COVID-19, according to the medical examiner during the nearly 20 months that proceeded it.

Six of the nine Riverside residents reported as having died from COVID-19 by the medical examiner did so between Oct. 11, 2021 and Jan. 26. Three North Riverside residents have died since Jan. 1, 2022, according to the ME. Just one North Riverside resident died from COVID-19 in all of 2021, the ME reported.

There are more local residents who have died that the Cook County Medical Examiner has not reported.

The Landmark has learned, after hearing about the death of a Brookfield resident at a DuPage County hospital, that the two counties don’t share that info.

We are trying to see whether DuPage County tracks that data and can provide it to us. We’ll let you know.

So, to summarize: Masks are over. COVID is not. Vaccines work. Continue to look out for one another.

Riversider turns knitting hobby into blanket biz

N

o one can ever accuse Dina Merola Kraus of having idle fingers. I knew she was a terrific cook, especially her Italian fare, but now she is adding another accomplishment to her resume.

As she tells it, she had always had an interest in knitting and crocheting but could never quite get the hang of it. Going on YouTube, she searched “handmade blankets” and found finger knitting. That’s right, you use your fingers no needles.

There are two types. One involves wrapping yarn around your fingers and the other is called a “loop method,” which is what Kraus does.

Starting last fall, she made her family a small blanket and progressed from there. Now she has her own business with one employee -- herself.

To date she has made 16 blankets all custom ordered.

Many of them were purchased as gifts as well as for the buyers themselves. Because they are made to order, recipients will have something that is specifically their own.

Kraus discusses with her clients the size of the blanket and the colors. The yarn is a heavy yet soft, making for a

cuddly cover on cold evenings. When ordering our blanket we talked color and she chose a beautiful country blue, and I can tell you it is comfy and cozy (like most things in our house).

Making the blankets does not take long depending on how many orders she has and getting the right yarn. Luckily, she has Michael’s and Hobby Lobby near for those frequent purchases.

She is looking at this as a little business and looking into a name to advertise. Designs by Dina? Currently most of her business has come through word of mouth or someone inquiring after having seen one of her blankets on Facebook.

Weekends seem to be the time when she does most of her work when she can curl up with her yarn and get her fingers going. She would like people to know Easter and Mother’s Day are coming and there are some beautiful new shades of yarn she would like to work with.

Juneteenth holiday for Riverside a welcome step I was very proud that at its last meeting the Riverside village board of trustees unanimously declared Juneteenth an official village holiday and a paid holiday for village employees.

In keeping with Riverside’s commitment to diversity and inclusivity, the recognition of this holiday appropriately highlights the innumerable contributions made by African Americans to our country’s history. It is also a remind-

er of the horrors of slavery and its still-present aftermath.

Our nation will never move beyond its legacy of oppression and discrimination until it fully accepts this history and its lingering effects. Riverside’s formal recognition of Juneteenth as a formal holiday is a welcomed step toward this critically needed reconciliation.

Joseph F. Dahm, 68, of Brookfield, died Feb. 13, 2022.

Mr. Dahm was born Oct. 4, 1953 and was a retired machinist.

He was the husband of Barbara, the brother of Thomas Dahm and the late Lynda Rodriguez and the uncle of Julio Rodriguez.

Visitation is Wednesday, Feb. 23 from 3 to 8 p.m. and Thursday, Feb. 24 from 9 to 9:30 a.m. at Ivins/Moravecek Funeral Home, 80 E. Burlington Street, Riverside. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Feb. 24 at 10 a.m. at St. Barbara Church, 4008 Prairie Ave. in Brookfield. Interment is at Resurrection Cemetery, Justice.

Joseph Gaberik, 89, of Berwyn and Naperville, died on Jan. 30, 2022 after a long illness.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, Mr. Gaberik served as a sergeant during the Korean War. After his service, he became a machinist and was a former owner of Riverside Works on East Quincy Street in downtown Riverside.

He was preceded in death by his wife Rose, brothers John and Paul, and his parents Joseph and Pauline. He is survived by his faithful companion Virginia Samel and family See OBITUARIES on page 16

Nazareth Academy freshman Gabe Kaminski, of Riverside, made a series of impressive comebacks at the IHSA Class 1A individual state wrestling meet.

The final one almost resulted in a state championship.

Kaminski was second in the 220-pound final after losing to Immaculate Conception senior Jadon Mims for the third time this season – 5-4 following Mims’ two-point reversal that began in approximately the final 15 seconds.

“You feel it, a point short of a state title, but I’m pretty proud of myself,” Kaminski said. “It’s amazing.

[Second in state] exceeded my expectations. Obviously the goal is to win, but coming off football season, having a shorter wrestling season, not having a lot of offseason, I think I did pretty well.”

The Roadrunners’ fifth top-six all-state finisher, Kaminski (33-5) achieved the program’s secondhighest state finish to Malcolm Watson’s 2A title at 220 in 2012.

Kaminski pulled ahead 3-2 with his third-period takedown, but he couldn’t ride out Mims (25-3).

“Real close,” Nazareth coach De-

nis Laughlin said. “Kind of a bittersweet weekend. He came from being behind in those last three matches.”

Kaminski’s only other losses this season were to the IHSA Class 2A state champion at 220 pounds, Bloomington senior Jake Weltha (35-3), and the Class 3A 220 state runner-up, Marist senior Ghee Rachal (32-3).

Weighing in at around 206 pounds most of the season and 210 for the final, Kaminski knows there’s room to grow.

“Once I get to a full 220, I think I have a really good chance at getting that state title,” Kaminski said.

“I did a lot of preparation, a lot of conditioning, extra work. I felt like it paid off.”

Kaminski rallied in his semifinal 4-3 with a third-period takedown and quarterfinal 7-4 after trailing 4-1.

In the IHSA Class 2A championships, Riverside-Brookfield High School senior Mateo Costello came one victory from all-state honors at 125 pounds.

Costello (36-7) lost the match to reach the final six 12-2 after going 2-2 with 5-0 and 14-2 victories.

Aphay qualified for the first IHSA girls wrestling state tournament with a top-four finish at the Andrew Sectional on Feb. 12.

Aphay (17-7) was fourth at 120 pounds after reaching the third-place match with a firstperiod pin in 1:34.

Aphay occasionally has competed and trained with boys wrestlers and received an early lift when she won the 120 girls title at the Fenton Tournament on Dec 4. “[Wrestling and jiu jitsu] have helped a lot with both pretty much. Jiu jitsu is helping with my takedowns a lot,” Aphay said.

Tavari Johnson, a senior guard on the Lyons Township High School senior boys basketball team, had a breakthrough 2021 varsity debut season en route to signing with the University of Akron.

Senior Billy Bach was among many juniors who contributed as role players.

“I didn’t get that much playing time, but we worked hard over the summer as a group with the senior class and the juniors,” Bach said. “We worked hard together. We built our chemistry and it’s paying off right now.”

With Johnson and the seniors fueling a talented and balanced attack, the Lions (235) are the No. 3 seed in the Proviso West Sectional.

Carole Lauger, 78 Worked in education, health care Carole Lauger, 78, of Swedesburg, Iowa, died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2022, at the Henry County Health Center in Mount Pleasant, Iowa.

Ms. Lauger was born Aug. 3, 1943, in Alexandria, Virginia, the daughter of Carl and Nancy (Wilson) Owsley. She graduated from Boone High School in Orlando, Florida, and received a bachelor’s degree and master’s in education from Stetson University.

In September 1968, Carole was united in marriage to Gary Lauger in DeLand, Florida. She worked in special education for a few years before becoming director of a nursery school.

Ms. Lauger worked in many different capacities in the years following. She was the program manager for the Heart Association, assistant dean at the University of Illinois School of Public Health, director of communications for the Department of Oncology and Comprehensive Cancer Center at Mayo Clinic, and edited the Journal of Clinical Nutrition in Palisades, New York.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Mount Pleasant and P.E.O. She enjoyed playing bridge, tennis, sailing, and most recently walking desert trails.

“From the first practice, I could tell with the team, as much energy we have in practice … we knew we were going to be good that way,” Bach said.

The Lions finished second in the West Suburban Conference’s Silver Division to state power Glenbard West and have achieved their third straight 20-win fullschedule season. Johnson, Bach and Polonowski have twice shared all-tournament honors.

“It’s not a surprise they’re a competitive group. They’re skilled. They’re tough,” LT coach Tom Sloan said.

Johnson has been a great starting point.

He’s averaging a team-best 16.2 points with at least 20 points four of the past five games.

“It helps my confidence when I have my team and my coach believe in me that I can score at a high level,” Johnson said. “Since we were freshmen, we always talked about how well we were going to be playing as seniors. It’s been really fun.”

Johnson also averages nearly two steals and is a great passer as evidenced by 4.4 assists per game. “[Tavari] just makes everybody better,” Will Carroll said. “If you’re open, he’s going to get it to you. If he needs to make the

play, he’ll make the play.”

Polonowski (11.6 ppg) and Bach (7.8 ppg) are the top two three-point threats.

Sullivan averages 6.5 points and Smith, Niego and Will Carroll between 4.5 and 5.6 points. Smith (4.7) and Sullivan (4.2) lead in rebounding averages, but Will Carroll, Bach and Polonowski also are between 3.7 and 3.1.

LTHS’ last sectional champion was the 2001 team that placed fourth in the state in Class AA. The Carrolls’ father, Dennis, started for the Lions’ 1994 third-place Class AA team and played basketball and tennis at Notre Dame.

“We’ve really come together as a group,” Will Carroll said. “The chemistry we have is really good. We all play hard and have each other’s backs.”

Born June 6, 1961, Ms. Norum cherished her co-workers through the years at GladstoneNorwood Bank, Bekins Moving and Quirch Foods. She loved flowers, butterflies and springtime.

Ms. Jones was the beloved partner of James Guenther and dearly loved by his daughters, Kassie and Shari (Adam) Rivera. She was the sister of Milan A. (Kathy), Raymond (Rosanna) and John Norum; the aunt of Stephanie (Jamie) Polson, Lisa Norum, Danielle (Scott) Cha, Jaclyn (Michael) Schneider, Kaitlyn Norum and Erik Norum; and grand aunt to Eliana Patricia Cha, James Everett Polson and Harper Mae Schneider.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William A. Jones Jr., and her parents, Milan “Jack” and Patricia Norum.

Services have been held. Interment was at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Hillside.

Nancy Kathleen Lyons, 71, formerly of North Riverside, died in Bloomingdale on Feb. 17, 2022.

Ms. Lyons was born July 5, 1950 in Chicago and was known on Seventh Avenue in North Riverside as the “forever” child of Dan and Eileen Lyons. She moved to Alden Village, Bloomingdale, in 2004, after the death of her father.

She was the daughter of the late Daniel and Eileen (nee Muldoon) Lyons; the sister of Patricia (Richard) Wyatt, Daniel (Mary Jean) Lyons, Christopher (Susan) Lyons, Gigi (Randy) Westerman and Erin Fuller.

She was the aunt of Zachary (Augusta) Wyatt, Kathryn (Josh) Hazen, Kelly (Adam) Shaw, Elizabeth (Nate) Krill, Christopher (Sarah) Lyons, Jamie (Dustin) Dubas, Kara (Kevin) Cliggett, Kelsey (James) Westhoff, Shannon Lyons, Ryan Westerman, Casey Westerman, Jeremy Fuller, Kylie Fuller, Teagan Fuller, Shaylin Fuller. William Edward “Bill” Vogt III, 61, of Brookfield, died February 12, 2022 in Elmhurst.

Mr. Vogt was born April 9, 1960 in Woodstock. After a career in information technology, Bill chose to work in the nonprofit world and excelled at expanding volunteer programs for organizations that helped people in need.

He was a kind and gentle soul who was always available to help others. People and animals alike could sense his kindness, and trusted that he would keep them protected from danger.

Mr. Vogt had a wicked sense of humor and no one could speak sarcasm as well as he. Mr. Vogt also loved playing volleyball, reading, traveling, building model cars and working on his train layout. He had a deep respect for veterans and every trip would involve visiting war museums, veterans memorials and battle sites.

He was the loving partner and best friend of Linda Reiter; the brother of Helen (Phil) Ferris; the uncle of Nancy, James Jr. and Michael and loving great uncle of eight. He was loved by his extended family, Judy, Ron and Mike, and will be remembered by the many friends whose lives he has touched.

All arrangements were private. A Celebration of Life in honor of Bill will be held in early April.
