Maybe you’ve strolled along the banks of the Des Plaines River near Riverside and had your breath taken away by the sight of a bald

eagle or an osprey. Or maybe you’ve paddled in a kayak from the north, shot through the swift waters of the narrow channel above the Barrypoint bridge and then downstream under the Swinging Bridge.

Or, perhaps, as an angler you’ve marveled

at the resurgence of fish species in the Des Plaines River through its Riverside segment, especially upstream of the Barrypoint bridge – largemouth and rock bass, bluegill, sunfish, channel catfish, gizzard shad and northern pike.

In many ways, that enjoyment is due to the untiring efforts of John Mach, perhaps best known in Riverside as the longtime president of the Hofmann Dam River Rats, who died See MACH on page 13

Brotherly love in abundance Cubanito Express Family legacy at the center of Cuban-meets-Mexican eatery in Riverside

Cuban meets Mexican in dishes at Cubanito Express #2, 3222 Harlem Ave. The counter service establishment opened quietly on Jan. 17 and has since been churning out a bevy of bold pressed sandwiches to hungry locals seven days a week.

“There are four Ambrocio brothers plus our chef, Marco, who own the business together,” said Lucio Ambrocio, co-owner of Cubanito Express. “Marco is like a brother to us, so yes, this is a family business.”

Ironically, Cubanito Express #2, is the first restaurant owned by the group of men. The brothers realized with five partners in the mix they had enough manpower and experience to open two businesses at once.

In June of 2021 they signed the lease on the first Cubanito Express location at 47th and Pulaski in Chicago and leased the Riverside location in October of the same year. Remodeling delays in the city combined with the smooth process in Riverside, however, allowed the brothers to open the second location first.

“It was much faster to get through the process in Riverside,” said Lucio Ambrocio. “The village president, Joseph Ballerine, personally guided me through the application process.”

Lucio, Cesar, Vicente and Rafael Ambrocio grew up working in their parents’ Mexican restaurant in Midlothian. Their parents have since retired, but the brothers came to appreciate the thoughtful approach their parents had when it came to supporting their large family.

“Working in the restaurant was just a part of our childhood, but now that we are adults, we have learned the world is not an easy place,” said Lucio. “We appreciate what our parents did with their restaurant. No matter if a restaurant is big or small is comes with the advantages of self-reliance.”

The brothers decided to re-enter the restaurant industry, but did not want to open a “straight Mexican” establishment. EstradaOropesa brought a wealth of restaurant experience and an arsenal of Cuban recipes to the business.

As a result, Cubanito Express marries the Mexican recipes Francisca Ambrocio used at her family’s restaurant and the Cuban techniques Estrada-Oropesa has been perfecting over the years.

Today, the restaurant offers an array of breakfast sandwiches and a large assortment of salads and pressed sandwiches suitable for lunch or dinner. While the items carry out well, many customers dine inside the diminutive space at rails along the windows and walls, hovering over generously sized Cubano, Ropa

Estrada-Oropesa is especially proud to offer five vegan sandwiches on the menu and notes community groups in Riverside have reached out to applaud their efforts to appeal to vegans and non-meat eaters.

Carnivores, however, will appreciate his version of the classic Cubano sandwich. The chef marinates pork butt in a house made mojo (a mix of fresh citrus, garlic and oregano) before roasting the meat until it is meltingly tender.

The pork is crisped up on the flat top before being sandwiched on a french roll with boiled ham, Swiss cheese, mayo, mustard and pickles and pressed on a plancha, a Spanish-style highheat grill used for pressing sandwiches.

Lucio Ambrocio recommends the guacamole streak sandwich for those looking to savor some amped-up Mexican flavors. Griddled

steak is served on bun, hot off the plancha and slathered with house made guacamole, topped with chorizo, melted cheese and drizzle of chipotle mayo.

Folks looking to enjoy an authentic Cuban meal in sandwich form will do well to order the pressed Ropa Vieja sandwich. This monster of a meal comprises braised beef in creole tomato sauce, house-made black beans and maduros (sweet plantains). Any meal will be made more memorable by the addition of some plantain chips with a bit of garlic mojo for dipping.

Cesar Ambrocio, co-owner and cook, has been eagerly learning Cuban cooking techniques from Estrada-Oropesa. He is pleased how the cuisines intermingle on the menu and feels especially proud that every sandwich served at Cubanito Express comes with a container of his mother’s authentic guajillo chili sauce.

“She came here to teach us how to make it and now we serve it every day,” said Cesar.

“Our mother is so proud of us and she will brag to anyone who will listen about this restaurant.”

Catalytic converter thieves hit Brookfield again Catalytic converter thieves were back at in Brookfield last week – and hitting mainly the south end of the village – with six vehicles targeted over two days.

All but one of the incidents was reported to have taken place during the overnight hours of Feb. 9-10. Unlike previous sprees, which targeted either Toyotas or older Hondas almost exclusively thieves went after different makes this time around.

On the morning of Feb. 8, a resident of the 4400 block of Maple Avenue reported that the catalytic converter was removed from a 2019 Nissan cargo van.

Police then responded to five calls on Feb. 10, with one of the victims able to capture at least part of the theft on security camera video. Three of the vehicles targeted on Feb. 9-10 were Hyundai models, with the other two being a 2012 Ford Escape and a 2000 Jeep.

The incidents occurred in the 4200 block of Raymond Avenue, the 4100 block of Deyo Avenue, the 4500 block of Blanchan Avenue, the 9500 block of Congress Park Avenue and the 9100 block of 28th Street.

The victim on Raymond Avenue obtained security camera video showing a sedan pulling up next to their vehicle at about 5 a.m. on Feb. 10. Someone is seen getting out of the sedan and then doing something near

the victim’s vehicle. The video did not show the entire incident, police said.

■ A 27-year-old Berwyn man flagged down a police officer at the North Riverside Park Mall, 7501 Cermak Road, on Feb. 6 at 3:20 p.m. to report that someone had stolen the catalytic converter from his Mitsubishi Outlander, which was parked in the east lot near the food court entrance.

The victim told police the theft took place sometime after 1 p.m. According to police, mall security conducting a camera review on a separate catalytic converter theft at about 1 p.m. showed that a silver sedan was involved in the theft. Two people wearing masks were observed tampering with the vehicle.

Tracks are not a street Riverside police called a tow truck on Feb. 8 just around 7:30 p.m. after responding to the Canadian National Railway tracks on 26th Street and seeing a vehicle stuck on them. The driver, a Chicago woman, reportedly told police she believed the railroad tracks were actually a roadway.

Police notified railroad officials, who halted train traffic while a tow truck responded to the scene to remove the vehicle from the tracks. The driver was cited for driving off the roadway.

Car warming up is stolen North Riverside police responded to the 7800 block of 26th Street on Feb. 8 just before 8 a.m. after a resident called to report that someone had stolen her 2021 Infiniti QX550, which had been left running and unattended while warming up.

The victim said she turned on the vehicle ignition remotely at about 7:40 a.m. About 15 minutes later she noticed the vehicle was gone.

In what may be a related incident, a resident of the 2500 block of Forest Avenue – near the site of the auto theft -- called police on the morning of Feb. 8 to report that someone had entered her unlocked vehicle and removed a wallet that had been left inside.

The victim on Forest Avenue also had left her vehicle running to warm up, but it was no longer running when she returned to it a short time later. The victim also told police a cellphone that did not belong to her was found on the driver’s seat.

Burglary ■ A security camera at the North Riverside Park Mall, 7501 Cermak Road, reportedly captured video of someone burglarizing the Buckle Up kiosk prior to 11:40 a.m. on Feb. 8.

The owner of the kiosk called police at about 11:40 a.m. after arriving to open the kiosk for business that day and finding an unknown amount of cash and pieces of costume jewelry taken from it. The kiosk had been secured by a tarp by an employee the night before at 8:30 p.m.

Security video reportedly showed a heavyset man wearing sunglasses, a white T-shirt, black pants and a Chicago Cubs hat at the kiosk around 10:50 a.m. on Feb. 8.

■ Brookfield police responded to the 3500 block of Oak Avenue on the morning of Feb. 7 after a resident called to report that a 2005 Honda Harmony snow blower had been stolen from her garage.

Police said that there were pry marks around the door latch. The last time the victim remembered seeing the snow blower in the garage was about Feb. 1.

These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Riverside, North Riverside and Brookfield police departments, Feb. 6-13, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

Rat control program vote fails in North Riverside Nays from two trustees scuttle systematic abatement effort, for now

A village-wide rat control program for the village of North Riverside hit a roadblock after two trustees voted against it on Feb. 7 – one without comment and one briefly criticizing the program’s fee structure.

Because two elected officials, Mayor Joseph Mengoni and Trustee Fernando Flores, were absent from the meeting, the motion to pass the rat control ordinance failed despite trustees Jason Bianco, Deborah Czjaka and Terri Sarro voting in favor.

The North Riverside code requires any ordinance or resolution to be passed by a majority of the elected members of the village board, meaning passage required four votes.

“I never would have put an issue that was remotely controversial on an agenda of a meeting where all of the trustees were not there,” said Village Administrator Sue Scarpiniti, who said neither of the two “no” votes -- Trustee Marybelle Mandel nor Trustee H. Bob Demopoulos – asked any questions or expressed any concerns about the ordinance prior to the Feb. 7 vote.

“It was a complete surprise,” Scarpiniti said.

During the two occasions at the village meeting last week where either could have engaged in further debate or asked questions, both were silent. Upon casting an initial vote against the ordinance, Demopoulos said he was voting no because “I have a problem with the fees.” He did not elaborate.

Mandel voted against the ordinance without comment, but in an email responding to an inquiry from the Landmark said that she felt “the fees are too much.”

“Yes we are for control but this is for the homeowners and property owners and business owners to take care of,” Mandel wrote in her email. “They should be required to do this -- on their own. Then bring in or mail in the property certificate from a licensed and bonded company and AVOID fees. Just the cost of the treating.

“Just do the work for the yearly or bi-yearly abatement. Get the place treated and that is it.”

Demopoulos did not respond to an email from the Landmark asking him specify his opposition to the ordinance or whether he had an alternate fee structure in mind.

Performance traces legacy of Black music in U.S. culture Brown says show is about ‘learning how to have more compassion for each other’

On Feb. 11 as part of Lyons Township High School’s celebration of Black History Month, Chicago performer Maggie Brown, with the accompaniment by the school choir, performed her one-woman show “Legacy, Our Wealth in Music” in the North Campus Reber Center.

Brown, the daughter of noted singer, songwriter, playwright and activist Oscar Brown Jr., was invited to perform by Jennifer Rowe, LTHS’s new director of equity and inclusion.

Rowe has known Brown for approximately 20 years and had invited Brown to perform at Loyola Academy when Rowe taught there and in Indian Prairie School District 204 where Rowe worked before coming to LTHS at the start of this school year.

The Landmark has been unable to find out how widely the mask-optional policy has been adopted by students at St. Mary’s. Principal Nicole Nolazco referred all questions to the Archdiocese of Chicago, which did not provide any information.

“St. Mary School has not counted masked/ unmasked students since the mask policy changed,” said Susan Thomas, a spokeswoman for the archdiocese in an email.

Pritzker’s announcement that he was partially lifting his indoor mask mandate on Feb. 28 came on the heels of Sangamon County Circuit Court Judge Raylene Grischow issuing a temporary restraining order on Feb. 4 voiding Pritzker’s school mask mandate in certain districts that were party to a lawsuit filed there.

Grischow’s ruling is being appealed. In the meantime, many public school districts across Illinois have gone mask optional despite Pritzker’s executive order.

Brown’s show, which was preceded by a performance by the LTHS Steppers, focused on the history of Black music, tracing its roots in Africa and its evolution in the United States from the time Africans were enslaved in this country to the modern era. She performed and spoke about spirituals, ragtime music, blues, jazz and boogie woogie.

“For our ancestors, music was a part of everyday life,” Brown said.

On some numbers Brown was accompanied by the LTHS choir. Brown came out to LTHS earlier in the week to rehearse with the choir.

Emerson Eich, a senior and a member of the choir found Brown’s show educational and moving.

“I thought it was really cool to be a part of it, but also listen to it and I learned a lot of things about Black History,” Eich said.

Eich said that he discovered that a lot of popular music today is rooted in African tradition.

“It was cool to learn all about it,” Eich said.

the performance from the classrooms as it was live streamed or later watch a recording.

Brown said that she hoped her show would foster understanding and compassion.

“Our legacy is not only something we inherit, but it’s also something we’re leaving and the importance of leaving the world better,”

Brown said in an interview with the Landmark after her performance. “Learning how to have more compassion for each other.”

After performing at North Campus Brown went to South Campus where she conducted question-and-answer sessions over two class periods with teachers and students.

District 102 school board member Ed Campbell, a Brookfield resident and professor of microbiology and immunology at Loyola University, said he supported the decision to go mask optional but added his children will continue to wear masks in school.

“Speaking only for myself, I would not have OK with the decision during the omicron surge, but given that numbers are declining so rapidly and most districts that have gone mask optional still had high levels of mask wearing, I was OK with the decision,” Campbell told the Landmark in a text message.

At a Feb. 10 meeting of the BrookfieldLaGrange Park District 95 school board that featured many public comments both for and against masking, Superintendent Mark Kuzniewski announced that District 95 would likely become mask optional on Feb. 28.

On Feb. 14, Kuzniewski reiterated his intention to make face masks only a recommendation, not a requirement.

“Starting on Feb. 28 that’s where we’re heading and we’re currently in our planning stage now and we’re very thankful that as we are getting into this, we have some time,” Kuzniewski told the Landmark in a telephone interview. “We’ll have a number of things that we’ll recommend but not require.”

Kuzniewski said the two S.E. Gross Middle School students who refused to wear masks on Feb. 7 and were kept isolated in the school’s library were back to wearing masks in school on Feb. 11 after he announced the district would relax its rules on Feb. 28.

Riverside Elementary School District 96 Superintendent Martha Ryan-Toye said the District 96 school board will discuss masking policy at its Feb. 16 meeting.

Both Komarek School District 94 and LyonsBrookfield District 103 are maintaining their policies of requiring all in school buildings to be masked.

Two students at Riverside Brookfield High School who refused to wear masks in school last week and were kept isolated from their classmates in an office are back to wearing masks RBHS Principal Hector Freytas said.

At last week’s school board meeting, RBHS District 208 Superintendent Kevin Skinkis said that while RBHS is keeping its masking requirement in place for now, he hopes that the rules can be relaxed in the not too distant future as COVID cases continue to decrease.

“Only time will tell,” Skinkis said.

Nowhere has masking more controversial in our area than at Lyons Township High School. In the wake of Grischow’s ruling, approximately 125 students refused to wear face masks on Feb. 8 and were kept isolated by other students in school cafeterias and other locations. Anti-mask students and adults held a rally outside LTHS on Feb. 8 after school.

But, by Feb. 14, the number of LTHS students who were still refusing to wear masks was down to about 10, according to Jennifer

Bialobok, the district’s community relations coordinator.

The school board’s committee of the whole meeting on Feb. 14 again featured parents speaking strongly against requiring masks and others who favored the mask requirement during the meeting’s public comment period. A couple anti-mask parents threatened to sue LTHS over its mask policy.

One of the students who has refused to wear a mask, sophomore Adisyn Schaefer, addressed the school board during the public comment period of the meeting.

“I’ve sat quietly and respectfully in a room separated from masked students,’ Schaefer said. “You’ve tried isolating me, threatening suspension, taking away in person education, and not only that, but three bathroom breaks, no phones.”

Schaeffer said that students should have the option to decide for themselves whether to wear masks.

Earlier in the meeting, school board President Kari Dillon said that LTHS was not bound by Grischow’s ruling.

“The circuit court ruling in Sangamon County has no jurisdiction over Illinois school districts including LTHS,” Dillon said. “Moreover, we have been in constant contact with our legal counsel and are adhering to their legal advice and recommendations during this interim period. We anticipate an appellate court decision very soon which will likely have further implications regarding the governor’s executive order.”

The Illinois Appellate Court is expected to issue a ruling on the Sangamon County case this week.

Leaving a legacy

G

rowing Community Media did not yet own the Landmark back in the mid-1990s when the Hofmann Dam River Rats formed to advocate for the reclamation of the Des Plaines River ecosystem.

But the group, led first by Jason Gorski and then later by its longtime avatar, John Mach, quickly made an impression. Our first articles about the nascent group appeared in 1999. That same year, we ran some of the first articles about a plan – just a dream, really – to “notch” the Hofmann Dam as part of a wider effort by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources to remove dams up and down the river as a way to improve water quality, recreation opportunities and wildlife habitats.

By 2001, Mach – in what may be the first Landmark story where he appears and where we misspelled his name as “Mache” – was one of the River Rats’ spokesmen and it was clear that the group was at the forefront of the lobbying effort to remove the dam.

Today on page 1 we carry the obituary of Mach, who died on Jan. 30.

That dream would not be realized until more than a decade later, but Mach would still be a vocal proponent of the dam removal, even as it faced strong local opposition from those claiming that doing so would reduce the flow of the Des Plaines to a trickle during droughts and expose smelly mudflats teeming with mosquitoes.

Of course, the doomsday scenarios never came to pass.

And while the hydrology of the Des Plaines through the Riverside/Lyons segment certainly has changed, it has become what people like Mach and his fellow River Rats predicted – a rejuvenated biosphere where wildlife abounds and where people can enjoy its beauty from either the banks or smack dab in the middle of the stream, without worrying about going over the dam.

Of course, the removal of the Hofmann Dam was the result of a multifaceted effort that included federal, state and local officials, but the local PR campaign – getting Riverside residents on board and convincing them that they had a natural resource worth reclaiming – was in large part due to folks like John Mach hammering away and organizing events that highlighted the natural benefits of the Des Plaines River.

The last time Mach appeared at a village board meeting was on Nov. 15, 2018. He was there to deliver to the village board data from a fish sampling survey done that year by the IDNR that showed 23 species of fish in the Swan Pond segment of the river.

The report also included an IDNR report that showed the number of fish species in that same section of the river had doubled between 1983 and 2013, due in large part to the removal of the Hofmann Dam a year earlier.

He appeared as he almost always did – clad in his dirt-covered work clothes and delivering the news with his SNL-worthy Chicago accent. Only, unlike those days back in the 1990s when local officials scoffed, no one batted an eye in 2018.

When John Mach had something to say about the Des Plaines, you listened, because he knew what he was talking about.

Thanks for leaving such a wonderful legacy, John.

Riverside native screens ‘Loyola Project’ documentary

t was called the “game of change” and it is my favorite sport story -- the 1963 Loyola University Ramblers basketball team that broke racial barriers when they defeated Mississippi State in NCAA tournament play, catapulting them to the finals and beating Cincinnati to win the 1963 national title.

The story now has been brought to the silver screen by Riverside born and raised Patrick Creadon and titled “The Loyola Project.”

This past weekend he was in the Chicago area for screenings at Loyola University and Fenwick High School, which Creadon attended.

The film is getting rave reviews. It focuses on problems Loyola, which was a racially integrated team, ran into as they faced an all-white team in Mississippi and the resistance they faced. Also a major player in the movie is former Riverside resident Jack Egan, now an attorney, who was the lone white player in Loyola’s starting five.

Creadon and his wife, Christine O’Malley, reside with their family in California but Riverside will always claim

Patrick as its own since the Creadon family has long been a part of the village’s history.

Patrick Creadon and O’Malley Productions have been successful in producing documentaries that are stories about real life people and events. His last documentary was “Hesburgh” that told the story of the famous University of Notre Dame President Theodore Hesburgh.

Carol Creadon, Patrick’s mother who attended many of the screenings this past weekend, said a one-hour version of “The Loyola Project” is scheduled to be shown on CBS-TV on April 2 at 1 p.m. (ET).

Kudos for standing fast on masking in schools I was glad to read about the administrators at Riverside-Brookfield High School and Brookfield-LaGrange Park District 95 who stood up to the anti-maskers. (“Court ruling has school districts scrambling on mask mandate”, News, Feb. 9).

Masks and vaccines for kids are keeping them safe. Why would anyone want to roll that back now? How sad was it to hear about school districts in the Chicagoland area who had to resort to remote learning on a fine weather day due to the anti-mask backlash. And there were parents acting like 3 year olds at school board meetings because they refused to go along with the mask mandate or to even discuss it in a civilized manner. What are these incidents teaching our kids?

The judge’s optional mask ruling in Springfield did not apply to those districts or parents that were not involved in the original lawsuit. This was not a class-action suit. That temporary restraining order is being appealed immediately by the attorney general. Administrators should be commended for exercising their legal authority.

The director of the CDC has called for a continuation of the mask mandate in schools. That should be the guiding principle for parents.

With less than 25 percent of our K-6th grade population fully vaccinated, parents need to start following all of the science, instead of acting more childlike than most of their kids.

Barry R. Bauman, 73 Art conservator Barry R. Bauman, who devoted 40-plus years to preserving and analyzing fine artwork and masterpieces, died Feb. 5, 2022 at his home in Riverside. He was 73.

Born in Syracuse, New York, Mr. Bauman received his bachelor’s degree in 1969 from Beloit College, and a master’s in art history with a specialization in Dutch baroque painting from the University of Chicago in 1971.

One year later, he joined the conservation department at the Art Institute of Chicago, and served the museum for 11 years as associate conservator of paintings. He was elected a fellow of the American Institute for Conservation in 1982.

In 1984, Mr. Bauman founded the Chicago Conservation Center, a facility and resource for the conservation of paintings, works of art on paper, objects, frames, murals and textiles. The Center grew to become the largest private con-

Time to end masking for students at schools

t this point, it’s inevitable that my time in high school will be defined by COVID-19. Only my freshman year at RiversideBrookfield High School has been untouched by the pandemic, which shut down school just before the fourth quarter of my sophomore year.

In fact, if masks are still required in school any later than March 13, I’ll have spent more of my high school career masked or online than in a normal environment. Now, as I stare down graduation, college and all else that is ahead of me, I long to end my time at RBHS as I began it, without a mask, able to see the faces of my friends and teachers.

When school went online as quarantine began in 2020, I stayed in my house and logged on to Zoom every day. Last year, after we switched to a hybrid learning plan, I was simply glad to be attending school

in-person, and wore my mask happily.

When COVID vaccines became available to my age group I got both my shots, I got my booster too. I’ve followed the rules every step of the way, and even now, as the omicron variant has run its course, and cases are plummeting, I am seeing very little relief.

I believe my experience to be typical of most RB students, nearly 77 percent of us are vaccinated. By being between the ages of 14 and 18, we are at a much lower risk for hospitalization from COVID-19 according to many accredited sources.

Yes, students aren’t the only ones in the school building, but RBHS’ COVID dashboard tells me that 95.3 percent of staff are vaccinated, meaning they don’t have too much to worry about either.

After nearly two years of disruption to

our education, all signs point towards it being safe to unmask.

Seeing Gov. Pritzker’s plan to lift the statewide mask mandate for just about everything besides schools confuses me greatly. It seems that many of our government officials seem to view schools as areas particularly susceptible to COVID. Yes, schools certainly do have a large number of individuals confined indoors, and it’s been difficult to socially distance in school, but the age demographic has to be considered.

COVID isn’t going go away anytime soon, so rather than trying to stop the spread of all cases, government officials should do their best to prevent serious cases of the virus resulting in hospitalization or death.

It won’t take much to prevent such cases in schools. This is simply by virtue

of school populations being composed of younger people, less likely to suffer from comorbidities such as high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity and more, which may exacerbate COVID’s severity.

Imposing such stringent regulations as required masking for all onto a population at low risk from COVID simply doesn’t make any sense to me. Instead, our leaders should focus on doing their best to help kids start to recover from the emotional and social maladies brought upon them by masks and other restrictions.

These effects of masking and the pandemic are surely more detrimental to students than a case of COVID. It is time to let kids and parents decide what’s best for them, to let students finally get back to our normal lives.

Mr. Bauman is survived by his wife Mary (nee Bourke); his sons, Ian William Bauman and Jeffrey Scot Bauman; his sisters, Sharon (Don) Corton and Nechi (Andy) King; five brothers-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.

June E. Dohnal, 79 Longtime Brookfield resident, church deacon June Ellen Dohnal (nee Hagenberg), 79, a resident of Brookfield for 42 years, died from complications due to COVID-19 on Feb. 5, 2022.

Ms. Dohnal was a personal assistant to the vice president marketing for the Standard Oil Company and then became an assistant manager in the family aircraft dealership.

In July 1982 she became a mother to her cherished daughter, Amanda, and a fulltime homemaker. In addition to being a good

mom, Ms. Dohnal unconditionally loved her rescue cats.

Over the years she was active in her class reunion committee for Riverside-Brookfield High School. Ms. Dohnal was a lifelong member of North Riverside Community Presbyterian Church, becoming a Sunday school teacher and eventually an ordained deacon.

Ms. Dohnal was the wife of John Dohnal, Jr.; the mother of Amanda Dohnal; the sister of Dr. Roger Frank (Jeanne) Hagenberg; the aunt of seven nieces and nephews; and the daughter of the late Frank Hagenberg and Evelyn Hagenberg.

Services have been held. Interment was at Woodlawn Cemetery, Forest Park.

Susan J. Sicotte, 66 Neurologist practiced for more than 20 years Susan Jean Sicotte, 66, of Riverside, died on Feb. 4, 2022.

She was born in 1955 to Albert (deceased) and Marlyn Sicotte, grew up in Rockford and graduated from Tulane University. After working for some years in social work and traveling, she graduated from the University of Chicago Medical School.

Following her internship and residency in neurology at the University of Chicago, she completed a fellowship at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke’s Hospital and medical school.

Dr. Sicotte spent more than 20 years practicing neurology with Neurological Care Associates and on staff at MacNeal Hospital, RML and Loyola University Medical Center. She was known as a thorough, caring and excellent physician.

She also devoted time to h er children’s activities, the community and charitable efforts. As an example, she was a Girl Scout troop leader for many years culminating in a trip to Switzerland and Berlin for her troop.

Dr. Sicotte was the loving wife of Ed Jepson for 27 years and the devoted mother of Nicholas, Eric and Halley Jepson. She is also survived by her brothers, Mike Sicotte (Adriana) and Rich Sicotte (Catalina); and her nephews, Aaron, Mitchell and Julian and her niece, Carolina, as well as her extended family.

Susan blessed us with her presence on

this earth and will be missed by many with whom she crossed paths.

A memorial service will be held on Feb. 19 at 11 a.m. at Ascension Lutheran Church, 400 Nuttall Road, Riverside. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the church that day. Due to COVID-19, masks are required at the church.

Ms. Wisnewski was a member of the Oak Brook American Association of University Women (AAUW). She served in the past as a PTA president of Hollywood Elementary School in Brookfield and was a lector for St. Barbara Church for many years.

She was the wife of the late Eymard J. Wisnewski; the mother of Mark (Jill) Wisnewski and Paul (Migdalia) Wisnewski; and the grandmother of Eric Wisnewski and Ava Wisnewski.

LTHS duo a team on and off the court

Markworth and Mezan lead surging Lions into postseason play

In the summer of 2019, Lyons Township High School seniors Olivia Mezan and Hailey Markworth knew each other casually as Amateur Athletic Union girls basketball traveling teammates.

When Willow Springs resident Mezan considered transferring to LTHS from Montini, she turned to Markworth for input.

“It was a good thing that brought us together, whether she wanted to come,” Markworth said. “I definitely hoped that she would. Right when I heard [Montini’s] coach was unfortunately leaving, there always was a possibility, but I never wanted to dig in because it was her decision.”

Now they’re not only teammates for one of the Lions’ best seasons in years but also college basketball recruits who are practically inseparable.

Markworth will play for Winona (Minnesota) State University. Mezan is headed for the University of Missouri-St. Louis.

“I’d say I see Hailey the most out of anyone probably,” Mezan said. “We’re basically always together, school and basketball. Outside of school we hang out. We drive around and get food together a lot.”

The Lions (25-3) are the No. 1 seed in their IHSA Class 4A Sectional, own a 13-game winning streak and won the West Suburban Conference’s Silver Division with a 12-0 record.

They began Proviso East Regional action on Feb. 15, after the Landmark’s print deadline, against No. 16-seed Proviso West.

A 5-foot-10 forward, Markworth averages 11.2 points and 4.0 rebounds with a team-high 88 assists and 32 steals, and Mezan averages 8.3 points with 67 assists and 51 steals. The 5-7 guard nearly has as many three-pointers (42) as two-point field goals (44).

“They’re probably two of the hardest working individuals out there, along with [senior Izzy Lee],” LTHS coach Meghan Hutchens said.

“They lead the team through example. [Each player] just pours everything into basketball.

When it comes to personality off the court, they’re both nonchalant. They’re both fun, relaxed and they get along and get along with the team really well. It’s all I can ask for as a coach.”

Hutchens remembered Mezan growing up as she annually attended LTHS summer basketball camps.

“I saw her that first summer at Montini when we were all in the same summer league,” Hutchens said. “I’m like, ‘Aw Olivia, you broke my heart.’ But then she came back.”

“It was really easy for me [coming to LTHS],” Mezan said. “I already knew a lot of people here and everyone is so accepting and really easy to get along with.”

Forming bonds with Mezan came just as easily for Markworth.

“It’s definitely great having a friend that relates to two parts of your life, through school and basketball,” Markworth said. “At this point, it’s kind of funny that we’ve only known each other for that long. Our conversation never really dies.”

Their friendship especially was important during the college recruiting process.

Markworth announced her verbal commitment to Winona State via Twitter on June 7, and Mezan announced hers on Aug. 4. The two sat side by side signing their letters of intent on Nov. 10.

“We were both at a time period where we were really stressed about it,” Mezan said. “I remember when Hailey committed, I was so excited. And she replicated that when I committed. And with COVID and all, the process was even harder. We were there for each other

a lot.”

LTHS’ lineup also includes Lee, an Illinois women’s soccer recruit, and juniors Ally Cesarini and Ella Ormsby as starters and key sophomore subs Elin O’Brien and Kennedy Wanless.

The 6-foot Lee leads the Lions in points, but all five starters have been a leading scorer for one of the most balanced acts around.

“I don’t think I’ve ever been on a team that’s so evenly dispersed,” Mezan said. “We don’t have a ‘best’ player per se. I feel like we all contribute in every way and that’s why we’ve been so successful.”

Hutchens said the duo’s demeanor also helps establish a consistently focused and energetic yet relaxed game atmosphere.

“They don’t let anything bother them,” Hutchens said.

RBHS advances record six wrestlers to state meet

Senior Thurman Givens has made quite an improvement in his second season with the Riverside-Brookfield High School wrestling team.

Givens also made quite an impression through his matches.

“We’ve even given him the nickname ‘Showtime’ because they’re so entertaining to watch,” RBHS senior Liam Cote said. “It’s

never a boring match when Thurman’s wrestling.”

Givens’ final match at the IHSA Class 2A Hinsdale South Sectional on Feb. 12 was typical of the success the Bulldogs enjoyed as they advanced a school-record six individuals to the IHSA individual state meet with top-four finishes.

Senior Mateo Costello (34-5 record at 126 pounds) was the sectional champion.

Givens (16-11 at 195) and Cote (23-7 at 182) finished third. Senior Brock Hoyd (33-6 at 170), junior Joe Midona (20-15 at 220) and freshman Edgar Mosquera (10-7 at 113) were fourth.

RBHS, which advanced wrestlers to sectionals in all 14 weight classes, topped the previous single-season best of five.

Only Costello and Hoyd previously have

qualified for the state meet, which was canceled in 2021.

“Looking at the brackets, I knew we had a lot of guys that had a shot,” coach Nick Curby said. “It’s just a matter of wrestling how they can, and we had a lot of guys step up and do that.”

Such as Givens. Down 5-1 early in the second period of his third-place match, Givens pulled a reversal and pin to win at 2:36.

“Most of my pins are first-round pins, but this one surprised me,” Givens said. “He had a lot of fight in him. Down 5-1, I turned the tables real quick. Usually it’s always something exciting.”

Costello is ranked No. 6 at 126 in the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association rankings. He beat Marian Catholic’s Joey Ba-

ranski 5-4 in the sectional final.

“As accomplished as I feel, I know my journey still hasn’t come to an end,” Costello said.

“After winning regionals, after winning right now, the job’s not done until I get a [state] medal.

Mosquera lost his first match but then won three straight matches to advance, including a reversal-and-pin after trailing 4-0. Mosquera follows in the footsteps of his brother, 2016 RBHS graduate Ernesto Bobe, who was a senior team captain.

Midona came out for the first time this season at the suggestion of football line coach Brad Vojcak.

“I didn’t want to do it at first, but after the first week, I loved it and then I just worked my way up all the way,” Midona said.

Even though fishermen love the natural world, Simonetta said, there was a certain selfishness when it came to catching fish.

“The reason we liked it was we caught fish.

If we got rid of the dam they could go wherever they wanted,” Simonetta said. “What I really learned from John was that there’s power when you do things that are selfless and for the right reason.”

Mach grew up in Berwyn, the son of Anna and James Mach. He attended Morton High School. His brother, the late Edward Mach, was a longtime science teacher at Hauser Junior High in Riverside.

A lifelong bachelor, Mach lived in an apartment across the street from his machine shop in Cicero. When he wasn’t working, he was fishing along the riverbank near Hofmann Tower in Lyons or volunteering with River Rats and the Cook County Forest Preserve District.

“I mean, I’ll be honest and tell you that from the time I could sneak out of the house on my bicycle, I was going fishing,” Mach said in a 2019 online profile published by the forest preserves. “I can remember the river when it basically didn’t have much in it, and at times it smelled bad. You didn’t want to go anywhere near it. But I’ve seen a reversal here in the water quality, in the fish population and the macroinvertebrate population that’s just out of sight.”

Mach not only advocated for removing Hofmann Dam to bring the river back to life, he was also determined to improve the ecosystem along its banks. Mach propagated and raised water willow plants in his apartment and then planted them by the hundreds to stabilize streambanks. According to Pescitelli, Mach was responsible for planting thousands of water willow plants along the Des Plaines through the years.

“He was an amazing guy,” he said.

The tide in the campaign to remove Hofmann Dam turned the weekend after Sept.

“The whole village showed up,” Brundage said. “It was a huge event and that’s when people started to change their minds in Riverside.”

Since the removal of the dams in 2012, Riverside residents have benefitted from a stream reborn.

“He had a huge impact on the quality of their life,” Simonetta said. “He gave so much of himself to Riverside and he did it under the radar. You can never walk that stretch of river without paying a debt to him.”

Prorok said a memorial celebration is planned for April 30 at 10 a.m. near the Hofmann Tower in Lyons.

Ms. Zahour graduated from the Rush Presbyterian School of Nursing in 1948 in Chicago. She began her nursing career in Pocatello, Idaho.

After lovingly raising her children, she worked as a substitute school nurse for local school districts 95, 98 and 208. She also substituted at the Berwyn Health Department and worked at Colonial Manor Convalescent and Nursing Home in LaGrange prior to her retirement in the late 1990s.

Ms. Zahour volunteered at the Brookfield Zoo for more than 47 years, nearly as long as the 50 years the zoo’s volunteer program has been in existence.

One of her greatest joys was to share the zoo experience with her children, grandchildren and many friends. She enjoyed being part of the zoo and visiting weekly with her volunteer colleagues. She was also a Cub Scout den mother and a Campfire leader with her children.

Services have bene held. Interment is at the Woodlawn Cemetery, Forest Park.
