Illinois shot rate improving but still lags behind most states By BOB UPHUES Editor

Victoria Aquin saw the headlines, as did her elderly mother, a resident of Riverside for 62 years. On Jan. 25 at noon, Illinois had entered Phase 1B of the COVID-19 vaccine rollout and some 600,000 people in suburban Cook County could begin making appointments to receive the precious shots – the way back to normal for which they’d waited nearly a year. Like many older senior citizens, Aquin’s mom does not have home internet, nor does she own a smartphone. Her landline is her connection to the outside world. And no one was answering the phone on Jan. 25 See VACCINE on page 14

A strong snow storm dropped a foot of snow on the area on Jan. 30-31, bringing cooped-up kids out to the sledding hill at Swan Pond Park in Riverside. For more photos, visit online at RBLandmark.com.

Riverside police adopt NAACP/Illinois Chiefs ‘Shared Principles’ Weitzel: Important to foster culture of ‘ethical and moral policing’ By BOB UPHUES Editor

Last August, following a wave of civil unrest and peaceful demonstrations nation-

ally and locally in response to the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and others at the hands of police, Riverside Police Chief Thomas Weitzel and President Ben Sells invited community members to an hour-long

conversation about policing, local police policies and how police can better serve citizens. In the months that followed, Weitzel set about exploring ways to internalize what

last year’s protests against police violence and brutality and in support of Black lives sought to address. See POLICING on page 15
