Fewer new cases of COVID-19 were recorded in Brookfield, North Riverside and Riverside during the past two weeks compared to the prior two weeks, the first time that’s happened since last November, and possibly a sign that the latest surge, driven by the omicron variant of the virus, has peaked.

For the two weeks ending Jan. 24, Brookfield recorded 447 new cases, according to the Cook County Department of Public Health, compared to the period from Dec. 27-Jan. 10 when there were 561 new cases.

While the older homes are fascinating for the history of the building methods and original owners, Cannon says that some of the newer houses featured are interesting due to the technology involved.

ple doing this with older homes, too, when they add geothermal systems.”

While their sixth book might have just hit the market, Cannon and Caufield are already working on their next project, which sticks close to home for the author.

In 2011, the duo covered Oak Park’s Unity Temple. With the completion of its restoration in 2017, Cannon says that he and Caulfield are now at work on a revised book that will cover the renovation.

Riversider co-authors book on Italian architect

Riverside resident Michelangelo Sabatino, who was co-authored of “Modern in the Middle: Chicago Houses 1929-1975,” published in 2020 and celebrating modern residential architecture in the Chicago suburbs, has just published another book.

Along with Napoleone Ferrari, Sabatino has just published “Carlo Mollino: Architect and Storyteller,” the first in-depth study of Mollino’s architecture.

Working from Turin in northern Italy, Mollino was MICHELANGELO a very influential SABATINO designer in the mid-20th century, although very few of his building still survive. His design work extended far beyond architecture into furniture, race cars, airplane instruments and photography.

This volume, however, focuses on Mollino’s architecture. According to the publisher, “The book frames Carlo Mollino within the context of 20th century architecture and culture, revealing his extraordinary talents as a ‘storyteller,’ that is, his ability to transform the technical-functional dimension of his buildings into an

expressive language, both symbolic and emotional.”

Co-author Napoleone Ferrari is president of the Museo Casa Mollino, which he co-founded in 1999 with Fulvio Ferrari.

Sabatino is professor of architectural history and cultural heritage and the inaugural John Vinci Distinguished Research Fellow at Illinois Institute of Technology’s College of Architecture.

The book is published by Park Books and distributed in the U.S. through University of Chicago Press.

Millions of people play videogames, often just for a thrill or to blow off some steam. To have an hour or two of fun.

That’s never really what has drawn Brookfield resident Tye Abbott to games. If Abbott, a 16-year-old junior at Lyons Township High School, is going to invest his time in a game, it’s got to deliver something extra.

“Games -- a large cohesion of the medium – is good at delivering a certain type of experience,” Abbott said. “At the same time, I started playing Eastern European games and they were harrowing, difficult. They use videogames for the betterment of the audience.”

Take the Russian role playing videogame “Pathologic,” for example. Set in a town that’s been beset by a plague – apt for our times – players take on the role of a doctor faced with difficult life-or-death choices.

“The game makes it harrowing to be a good person,” Abbott said. “It’s a brilliant exploration of medicine and altruism, and it can only be told in the medium of games. It’s powerful giving people agency over those decisions.”

Abbott hopes to apply those kinds of lessons in a new videogame he has under development, “RD Mars,” which was set to launch

Jan. 19 and has been play-testing on a website called Steam (store.steampowered.com), where you can also purchase and download (for just $3.99) Abbott’s first mind-engaging videogame – “Lucid: Parables of the Ubermensch” – which prompted one reviewer to warn, “If you are prone to rage quits then this isn’t the game for you. This game will put your patience to the test” and another described as a “trippy, abstract platformer, with simple but good looking pixel art.”

The “trippy pixel art” that characterizes Lucid as well as “RD Mars” will remind older gamers of first-generation desktop computer games, where action plays out in two dimensions – often looking top down onto corridors and rooms as the journey progresses.

“While the art might be a throwback, what I pride myself in is narrative and gameplay experience, which are quite rare in the modern industry,” Abbott said.

“Visually, the art I’ve chosen is a matter of scope. As a designer I have limitations, but the pixel art delivers enough to engage with ideas on a larger scope. The visuals serve the themes I’m exploring.”

In developing “RD Mars,” Abbott is taking some inspiration from the European horror genre games he enjoys playing. The player in “RD Mars” is an artificial intelligence reconstruction of a fictional once-great inventor named Felix Darwins.

The game leads the AI reconstruction to explore more about the history of its developer and confront its own destructive passions.

“It’s a cohesive view of what an all-consum-

ing drive had done to Felix,” Abbott said. “I wanted not to pull punches when telling the story.”

While the psychology might be lost on some players just looking for a fun game to play, Abbott said most who have tested “RD Mars” get the point.

“I spend a lot of time talking to play-testers,” Abbott said. “People experience art in different ways, but the majority of the players get the themes and ideas I’m trying to explore.”

Truth be told, Abbott has always liked his games on the challenging side. At age 7 he was building his own board games and testing them “until the games were too complicated for any human to be able to remember all the rules,” he said.

Abbott’s dad suggested computer programming as an outlet for that interest, and in sixth grade Abbott took a class in java programming where he made his first animation sequence – a sun rising and setting.

By the start of his freshman year at LTHS, he knew he wanted to pursue videogame development. He’s a fan of Galloping Ghost videogame arcade in Brookfield and said he’s pitched owner Doc Mack on a possible event in connection with the eventual release of “RD Mars.”

Abbott said he’ll likely pursue a computer science degree in college but will continue game programming regardless.

“I’m going to work on this every single day to see if I can turn this into something that can support my life,” he said.

Car stolen in North Riverside turns up in Oklahoma

A 2019 Volvo XC90 that had been taken – apparently without anyone noticing – from the lot at Zeigler Ford, 2100 Harlem Ave. was recovered by police in Okmulgee, Oklahoma on Jan. 23 at around 5 a.m. after an officer there pulled the driver over because the Volvo had no license plates.

Oklahoma police believed the vehicle had been stolen from Zeigler Ford in North Riverside, but they called to confirm because a computer check did not return any information.

North Riverside police contacted the manager of Zeigler Ford, who confirmed the vehicle had not been sold to anyone and should still be on their lot. Okmulgee police charged the driver, 27-year-old Jahmar Hampton, with felony possession of a stolen motor vehicle and arranged to have the Volvo returned to Zeigler Ford.

Battery A 52-year-old Brookfield man was charged with misdemeanor battery on Jan. 22 after he allegedly shoved a 69-year-old woman through the back door of a business in the 9200 block of Broadway Avenue, causing a fall that knocked out one of her teeth, chipped another and bruised her face.

According to the police report, the woman entered the business at about 5:30 p.m. through the rear door, which was unlocked, to complain

about trash from the business being stacked in her parking space.

The alleged offender told police that the woman, who was unknown to him, was yelling about parking spots in the back. He reportedly told police that he told woman she had to leave the business and closed the door hard behind her.

The victim claimed the alleged offender grabbed her jacket and forcefully pushed her forward through the back door, causing her to fall face first on the pavement.

Vehicle break-ins North Riverside police responded to the parking lot outside Urban Air, 7401 25th St., on the night of Jan. 20 after someone called to report a man emptying everything out of a Ford Explorer parked there.

When they arrived at about 7:40 p.m., officers found the Explorer’s driver’s side door open and propane tanks, boxes of tortillas and limes, tools and various papers in the parking lot.

Police located the vehicle’s owner, who told them he parked there at about 5:30 p.m. and locked the vehicle, which was loaded with supplies for his food truck. The only thing missing, he said, was a plastic bin containing power and hand tools valued at $500.

A witness told police he saw a man wear-

North Riverside police believe the offender may be the same person suspected of breaking into and stealing a laptop computer from a vehicle in the parking lot outside Betty’s Bistro, 7369 25th St. that same evening.

A man called police about 9:45 p.m. on Jan. 20 to report that when he returned to his car outside the gambling parlor, he observed his laptop computer and prescription medications missing.

The victim went looking for the offender and reportedly located a man with his laptop not far away at the bus stop outside of Longhorn Steakhouse on Cermak Road in Berwyn.

The victim reportedly confronted the alleged offender, threatening to strike him with a tire iron unless he turned over the computer.

The man turned over the computer and fled the area before North Riverside police arrived.

Police commanders learned from officers on the midnight shift that people had entered the mall while it was closed early on Jan 22, anticipating the grand opening of JD Sports. The midnight shift was able to clear the mall, but from 7 a.m. on crowds of people began to line up outside two different entrances on the east side of the shopping center.

Just before 9 a.m. two large groups of people breached the food court entrance and another entrance and began running toward JD Sports. North Riverside police radioed for assistance in maintaining order.

Others standing outside saw people streaming inside the mall from other doors and began to get unruly, according to police, who began letting that group – which numbered in excess of 100 – inside the mall in small groups.

Police were able to control numbers inside the mall after that and maintained order until crowds died down around 12:30 p.m.

These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Riverside, North Riverside and Brookfield police departments, Jan. 17-23, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

COVID test firm, lab operating local pop-ups accused of fraud

Illinois AG demands continued shutdown; FBI confirms raid

Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul announced late on Jan. 20 that his office has demanded that Center for Covid Control, a Rolling Meadows-based company which provided free COVID-19 testing at pop-up sites throughout the Chicago area, extend their voluntary shutdown of test sites “for the foreseeable future.”

He also stated his office had launched an investigation in the company in response to complaints from Illinois residents, which “have ranged from testing results being delayed or not received at all, to results being provided to individuals who were never administered a test, to tests being stored improperly and staff incorrectly using PPE and face masks.”

Meanwhile, USA Today first reported Sunday that the FBI had raided the Center for Covid Control’s Rolling Meadows headquarters, which shares an address with its primary lab partner, Doctors Clinical Laboratory, on Jan. 22.

“The FBI was conducting court-authorized law enforcement activity in Rolling Meadows yesterday,” FBI spokesperson Siobhan Johnson told USA Today.

Center for Covid Control confirmed on its website that their voluntary shutdown, which started Jan. 14, would extend beyond their planned re-open date of Jan. 22.

“CCC remains committed to providing the highest level of customer service and diagnostic quality and will not resume collection of patient samples until staffing resources permit CCC to operate at full capacity,” the company stated on its website.

The Illinois attorney general’s demand came a day after Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison announced he had sued Center for Covid Control and its primary lab partner, Doctors Clinical Laboratory, alleging they failed to report results to state health authorities, deceived customers by promising results they could not deliver on time or did not deliver at all and provided fraudulent test results to customers.

and in a mobile pod at 1527 Harlem Ave. in Forest Park until Jan. 14, when they abruptly paused operations in the face of an avalanche of complaints and heightened scrutiny by officials in several states, including Illinois.

Center for Covid Control also operated a testing site in the lobby of the former Oak Park Arts Center at 200 N. Oak Park Ave. The building is now the home of the Free Church, which bought the property in 2020.

In Riverside, where three residents died between the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020 and October 2021, there have been four fatalities between Oct. 11, 2021 and Jan. 22. The most recent fatality was a 91-year-old Riverside woman.

North Riverside has experienced four deaths from COVID-19 but none in more than a year, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner. The last fatality in North Riverside was recorded on Jan. 11, 2021, bringing the total since the beginning of the pandemic to four.

Despite the downward trend in case numbers, Pritzker and Ezike both urged Illinois residents to get vaccinated, to get booster shots when they’re eligible and to continue wearing face coverings in public places.

“The omicron surge has tested and proven once again that vaccines and masks are our best tools to keep most people safe from each variant of COVID-19,” Pritzker said. “Nevertheless, omicron’s high transmission rate caused more COVID hospitalizations than ever before. The vast majority unvaccinated. Our hospital systems and health care workers have battled to treat and to save not just COVID-19 patients, but every patient who walks through their doors.”

Vaccination rates continue to inch up, but the percentage of fully vaccinated residents continues to lag behind those who have chosen to be partially vaccinated. In Riverside, more than 90 percent of residents have received at least one dose of the vaccine, while 73.9 percent are fully vaccinated, according to the Cook County Department of Public Health.

In Brookfield, 87.4 percent have received at least one dose of the vaccine, with 67.5 percent fully vaccinated. In North Riverside, 83.6 percent of residents have had at least one dose of the vaccine, with 65.6 percent fully vaccinated.

“Employees have been gathering incoming tests in garbage bags and piling them in various corners of their office without any semblance of organization,” the lawsuit states.

When employees asked the Center for Covid Control’s owners, Akbar Syed and Aleya Siyaj, for more help they reportedly refused. Instead, according to the lawsuit, Siyaj “instructed employees to ‘streamline’ data entry by entering the name of a patient and immediately hit a series of keys that would input defaults for the remaining entries, including defaulting a patient’s insurance information to ‘uninsured.’”

The company then would reportedly seek reimbursement from the federal gov-

ernment, claiming those with private insurance were actually uninsured.

Because of the huge backlog of tests waiting to be processed and knowing that tests were no longer “good” after three days or so, a Center for Covid Control official reportedly instructed employees to post-date test samples to make them appear more recent than they were and then send them on to the lab for processing.

Some people who had competed online forms to receive tests, but who actually never followed through with getting tested, complained that they received test result nonetheless from center for Covid Control.

“I’m holding these companies accountable that sent back false or inaccurate results, when they send them back at all, for deceiving Minnesotans and undermining the public’s trust in testing,” Ellison said in a press release.

According to the lawsuit filed by Minnesota’s attorney general, former employees of Center for Covid Control reported that the company could not keep up with the volume of tests as it expanded rapidly across the country.

Local state rep launches policy, politics podcast

Zalewski hosts show with Brookfield Dems’ leader

Anyone who knows state Rep. Mike Zalewski (D-Riverside) knows he loves to talk, especially about policy and politics. Zalewski is now sharing that interest with others with a new podcast that he hosts.

The podcast is named “Have All Voted Who Wish,” which is what they say on the floor of the Illinois House of Representatives before a voted is closed.

“I love podcasts,” Zalewski said. “I think they are a forum for discussion in a way that you don’t get on a radio show. I’ve been fortunate enough in this job to do radio interviews, and you have to boil your answers down to 10-second bites.

“That’s just so hard to talk about policy, to talk about politics, to talk about human interest, to do it that way. Podcasts have no such limitations. You really can stretch your legs and get out there and get into a different kind of conversation.”

Zalewski hosts the podcast with Chris Crisanti, who is the head of the Brookfield Democratic Party and another politics and policy junkie.

The first three episodes of “Have All Voted Who Wish” were recorded late last year and another episode was recently broadcast.

In the pilot episode Crisanti interviewed Zalewski about the Illinois General Assembly’s veto session, but all the podcasts since have featured guests Zalewski and Crisanti interview.

Guests have included Chicago-based Democratic consultant Tom Bowen, Crain’s Chi-

cago Business political reporter A.D. Quig and state representatives Mark Batinick (RPlainfield) and Nick Smith (D-Chicago). Each episode typically runs 45 minutes to an hour.

Besides being an opportunity to share interesting conversations and introduce listeners to some of the interesting people Zalewski encounters on a regular basis, the podcast provides Zalewski with a different way to engage with his constituents and voters.

“I also think that we’re talking to our constituents in different ways,” Zalewski said.

“I think that you have to find unique ways to get in front of the people you represent, and they’re no longer consuming media in the same way. You have to be on Facebook and Twitter and Instagram, and you have to appeal to their ear just as much as their eye.”

“Have All Voted Who Wish” is available on Apple podcasts, Spotify and Stitcher.

The podcast does not come out on a regular schedule, but Zalewski hopes to air one every few weeks.

“I do only want to do it when it’s timely,” Zalewski said.

Zalewski said podcasts will probably be more frequent when the state legislature is in session.

“I’ve got a feeling when I’m in Springfield and when I’m around people and have ideas, people tell me stories, that I’ll be able to turn on the microphone more,” Zalewski said.

“That’s the vision.”

To date, Zalewski has recorded the podcasts from a studio at Boxless Media, a digital marketing company based in Brookfield, whose owner, Jason Baumann, who grew up with

They both attended St. Symphorosa Catholic School. Baumann is about a year older than Zalewski who was in the same grade as Baumann’s brother, Brian.

Zalewski has learned that a broadcastworthy podcast involves more than recording an interview. After recording an interview, it takes some post-production work to get the interview polished and ready to air.

“I say ‘um’ a lot and that has to come out [and] there’s times when there are awkward transitions that they have to clean up,” Zalewski said. “You just talk for basically 30

minutes to 45 minutes, and then it’s up to the engineering and sound guy to construct it in a way that people can actually listen to.”

Zalewski said that he pays Boxless a couple of hundred dollars an episode for the studio time and sound and engineering work. The payments come from Zalewski’s campaign funds. There is no advertising on the podcast and Zalewski said that he’s not trying to make any money with it.

“It’s a good investment,” Zalewski said. “I enjoy it. I’ve gotten great feedback on it. People have listened to it which flatters me. I really do it because it is something that I enjoy doing.”

LTHS board OKs $6.3 million air-conditioning upgrade Project to cool 60 classrooms at South Campus, fieldhouse at North Campus

This summer Lyons Township High School will spend a little more than $6.3 million to add air conditioning to the school’s South Campus and to replace the air conditioning units at the North Campus Vaughan Fieldhouse following a 6-0 vote by the District 204 Board of Education on Jan. 18.

Northbrook-based F.E. Moran Co. was awarded the contract to do the work.

Nine air handling units will be replaced at the North Campus fieldhouse. At South Campus, the remainder of B Wing and the entire C Wing will be air conditioned, meaning about 60 additional classrooms will be air condi-

tioned as a result of this project.

The scope of the project is ambitious but district officials said the F.E. Moran was confident that they could complete the all the work over the summer. F.E. Moran will have three separate crews working six days a week at LTHS this summer. The fieldhouse will be out of service from May 16 until Sept. 16.

“We believe that they ought to be able to complete the work in a timely fashion,” said Brian Stachacz, the director of business services for LTHS, at the school board meeting.

“They are confident they can get it done.

The district will use $2 million in federal pandemic relief money and a $1 million state grant to help pay for the project. The rest of the payment for the project will come out of

the school district’s cash reserves. LTHS had an operating surplus of approximately $5 million last year.

F.E. Moran was the low bidder among the seven companies that submitted bids for the project.

The district will pay an additional $55,511 for asbestos removal work related to the airconditioning project. The school board voted 6-0 to award the contract for the asbestos removal work to Great Western Abatement, a company based in downstate Jerseyville.

The school board also tentatively approved spending $218,854.75 for a new scoreboard at

Bennett Field, where the LTHS team football, soccer and track teams compete.

The new scoreboard, which still must be approved by the village of Western Springs, will measure 13.2-by-25 feet and have a full LED video display.

The existing scoreboard at Bennett Field is about 20 years old and the school is starting to have trouble getting replacement parts for it, Stachacz told the school board.

The new scoreboard will be a full video board. The LTHS Booster Club and the LTHS Alumni Association will each contribute $59,000 toward the cost of the new scoreboard.

“That generosity is really appreciated,” said LTHS school board member Alison Kelly.

FBI investigating Jan. 18 bank robbery in Brookfield Man wearing ‘Goonies never say die’ T-shirt makes off with nearly $4,000

The FBI is investigating the Jan. 18 robbery of Citibank, 9009 Ogden Ave. in Brookfield, where a man demanded that a teller hand over “all your 100s and 50s” before exiting with nearly $4,000 in cash.

The suspect is described as a white male in his mid-30s who was wearing a black beanie, sunglasses, a black face mask, a gray T-shirt with a skulland-crossbones design along with the words “Goonies never say die.” The man wore a dark-colored hoodie under the T-shirt, blue jeans and black gloves.

According to police, the offender approached the bank teller at about 12:15 p.m. and handed him a note, written on what appeared to be a brown paper bag, stating “Give me all your 100s and 50s.” The man, who never implied he was armed, reportedly also said those words to the teller while keeping his right hand on the counter and his left hand out of sight.

When the teller handed over the cash, the offender scooped the bills toward him, turned around and rushed out of the bank.

Other customers in the bank at the time reportedly did not notice the robbery, but some did report seeing the man walking out with a lot of money in his hands.

Construction workers who were repairing the front of the bank, damaged on Jan. 2 when an alleged drunk driver crashed his car into it, told police they were not aware a robbery had taken place.

The offender, who made off with $3,880, was last seen running east toward the bank parking lot. Brookfield police responding to the scene said the offender had fled before they arrived and found the bank to be on lockdown following the robbery.

Brookfield police turned over the investigation to the FBI at about 12:45 p.m. That agency officially announced news of the robbery and released security camera images of the alleged offender on the afternoon of Jan. 19.

who displayed a handgun and demanded cash robbed the bank on Aug. 6, 2019.

It is unknown whether those offenders were ever arrested and charged by the FBI.

Brookfield Elks honor Officers of the Year

At the Dec. 13, 2021 meeting of the Brookfield Village Board, representatives from the Brookfield Elks Lodge 1510 presented Officer Kevin Berry and Officer Charles Reed as their Police Officers of the Year.

Both officers were chosen, according to Police Chief Michael Kuruvilla “because of their heroic actions in saving an unconscious man’s life.”

In February 2020, Berry and Reed responded to the scene where a vehicle had crashed into a house. The vehicle caught fire and the two officers pulled the unresponsive, still

seat-belted driver from the wreckage.

“We are grateful to these officers for their ability to recognize the importance of the life-saving measures but also that of evidence preservation and enforcement action,” Kuruvilla said at the meeting. “They not only saved this man’s life but were able to maintain the safety of the greater community.”

Although the incident took place in 2020, the Brookfield Elks honored the officers in 2021 since the COVID-19 pandemic prevented them doing so in 2020.

Forging ahead, slowly

T

he pop-up COVID-19 testing sites, which spread like a rash into any vacant space available in late 2021 and into early 2022 and run by outfits like the Center for Covid Control and Free Covid Testing Site, have been pretty well put out of commission – at least for now – after multiple investigations were launched against the former company and its primary lab partner.

What we learned in the past week through data kept by the Centers for Disease Control is just how much money flowed from the federal government to these companies, which would seek reimbursement for those they claimed were uninsured, even if they weren’t, allegedly.

We’re talking staggering amounts of money here. The primary lab used by the Center for Covid Control, called Doctors Clinical Laboratory, had been paid more than $120 million by the feds. Other labs associated with pop-up operators raked in even more money, by submitting invoices for tests many of whose results now appear to have been questionable to fraudulent in nature.

If these investigations bear fruit, we hope there are serious consequences for those attempting to profit from a public health crisis. Such investigations ought to also spark a little self-reflection and humility, because the scale of the crisis was not an accident.

Last week also marked the beginning of a federal effort to get at-home COVID-19 tests directly into the hands of citizens, which when you think about it, is mind-boggling nearly two full years into a pandemic that has killed nearly 900,000 nationwide during that time.

You expect bad actors to work angles in a crisis to benefit themselves, that’s why there are booming black markets in times of war. In this case, our national response encouraged such behavior.

The latest case surge, fueled by the omicron variant of the virus, appears to be pulling back from its peak, but the danger of other, perhaps more virulent, variants remains.

We’ll know when they appear.

In the meantime, we have at our disposal proven protection against the worst effects of the virus, at least against the variants we’ve experienced to date. Those are the vaccines that continue to be widely available, for free, to anyone over the age of 5.

While a very good percentages of residents, at least locally, have received at least one dose of the vaccine – in Brookfield, North Riverside and Riverside those figures stand at more than 80 percent – many fewer local residents have been fully vaccinated, much less boosted.

The most recent figures from the Cook County Department of Public Health show that fewer than 70 percent of Brookfield and North Riverside residents are fully vaccinated, while not quite 75 percent of Riversiders are.

Vaccines are not just protection for yourself, they are protection for others – your kids, their friends and families, their teachers. They’re not a conspiracy, they’re miracles.

Former chief continues to advocate for police

H

e may have retired from his job as police chief of Riverside, a position he had held for 13 years, but Tom Weitzel has not retired from being an advocate for the profession he so cares for.

Weitzel continues to seek support for making it a federal crime when someone kills a police officer in the line of duty, citing the recent case of Bradley police Sgt. Marlene Rittmanic who was shot dead outside a Bradley hotel after she and her partner responded to a call. Her partner survived and is still hospitalized.

The campaign is not new for Weitzel, who was working towards passage of legislation while still on the force.

Weitzel has written letters to former President Trump, President Biden and to Sen. Dick Durbin to name a few. He’s written letters to newspapers and has done radio interviews on the subject. He’s disappointed that he has not gotten very far with what he believes to be a very important matter.

Weitzel states the police are living in treacherous times and need the support not only of government but the public as well.

Police put themselves in harm’s way every day, something Weitzel can relate to. As a young officer just three years on the job, Weitzel was wounded by a shotgun blast -he was saved by his bulletproof vest – while investigating a suspicious vehicle.

He notes that many of these tragic incidents result from routine stops and domestic calls that can deadly.

As we continued our conversation, it became apparent that crimes of this nature are all too commonplace. At one time, the death penalty was the punishment for killing a police officer; maybe it is time to relook at it.

Perhaps those of you who support this would not be averse to sending a letter to those for whom you vote.

Thanks again, Tom Weitzel, for not only serving Riverside but for your continuing service in advocating for police officers who are victims of violence.

She loved life and had a gift for bringing those she loved together. She was passionate about her daughter Amelia’s Girl Scout JENNIFER L. JANI and softball activities. She loved being a part of the Brookfield Women’s Club, cheering on the Cubs and singing along to any music she heard. She is fiercely loved and will be forever missed.

She was the wife of John Jani; the mother of Amelia; the daughter of John (Tiffany) Youngmark and Karen Fatout; the sister of Mary Youngmark, Heather Youngmark and Chelsea (Ryan) Hammer; the aunt of Connor Hammer; the daughter-in-law of John (Ruth) Jani and Elizabeth (Peter) Jaffe; the sister-in-law of Jeff Jani; and the granddaughter of Barb Fatout. Riverside café opens thanks to strong community support

Motivated by hardship, co-owners of Sips & Sweets Café show resilience

Krista Brazel and Carla Biggs, co-owners of Sips & Sweets Café at 1 Riverside Road in Riverside, opened their doors to the public on Dec. 18.

Brazel and Biggs both lost their jobs due to the pandemic in 2020. Harnessing their entrepreneurial spirit, they formulated plans to start their own businesses. Brazel sold hot chocolate bombs and cinnamon rolls out of her car to 2,000 loyal Facebook followers.

Simultaneously, Biggs dreamed of a startup coffee truck. The two merged their love of sips and sweets after expressing interest to one another on Facebook.

The prospect of heavy foot traffic and convenient placement next to the downtown train station drew these Westchester residents to Riverside. They fell in love with the town’s charm and authentic sense of community.

That community returned the love by responding to a Kickstarter online fundraiser with $11,500 to help get the business off the ground.

Despite local support, opening day was pushed back three months due to unexpected building challenges. Brazel said the delay was

When guests walk through the doors, they can expect an assortment of from-scratch treats ranging from cookies and cupcakes to toaster pastries. Unlike the well-known commercial pastries, Sips & Sweets stuff the tarts with fresh strawberry or brown sugar and cinnamon fillings. The shop’s cinnamon rolls are also a customer favorite.

The coffee selection may at first seem standard, but flavor options are plentiful. Customers can pair lattes and cold brews with combinations such as caramel fudge waffle cone or white chocolate and Irish cream.

Sips & Sweets Café sources their coffee from Aspire CoffeeWorks, which provides kids and adults, with and without disabilities, an opportunity to work together. Sips & Sweets Café also encourage workers with developmental delays to accompany their team of six women

employees.

Brazel and Biggs said they feel driven to support Aspire Coffee Works not only for its artisanal quality and depth of flavor but for its personal connection to them. Both Brazel and Biggs have family members on the autism spectrum and believe supporting this local business is a must.

Cross community connections are a key element for these businesswomen. Connie Brown, a Brookfield resident who owns Brown Cow Ice Cream Parlor at 7347 Madison St. in Forest Park, rallied around the two with valuable support and advice.

Brown said she is proud of her former employee Brazel. Sips & Sweets Café will have pints of Brown Cow ice cream for sale within the next couple of weeks and anticipates selling scoops and cones in time for summer.

Additionally, they hope to round out the menu with soups, salads and natural energy

drinks. A handful of keto-friendly items are available, and gluten-free and vegan options are coming soon. While tasty treats and signature drinks are the café’s origin, the pair has a clear vision of what their cafe will one day be.

“We want this to be a place where kids go after school, a place where moms and dads spend their mornings. We want to be part of the community,” said Brazel.

This shop is located in the circa-1870 Arcade Building, the oldest commercial building in Riverside and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Both owners see their job as an opportunity to show their young kids the importance of independence. Although these mothers miss their kids during their 12- to 15-hour workdays, it makes their day when they can visit.

Brazel says it is rewarding working for herself.

“I have always wanted my own business.” said Brazel. “It was now or never.”

Starting senior guard Shannon Malloy usually is an important outside threat for the Riverside-Brookfield High School girls basketball team.

On Jan. 20, she was doing everything possible in other ways to help the Bulldogs win their Senior Night game against Proviso East.

“I jammed my thumb in the first quarter so I didn’t shoot as much. I was more of a passer,” Malloy said.

Yet when the Bulldogs needed to score, Malloy caught a pass from junior Bryce Pacourek and immediately shot a successful three-pointer.

Her only basket of the game with 23.8 seconds left gave the Bulldogs a hard-fought 4746 victory.

“Awesome. I could breathe again,” said Malloy about her most memorable basket.

“Because we haven’t won a lot of games recently and it was Senior Night, we all wanted it so bad that no one was giving up, epically, tonight.”

RBHS (8-16) honored its large senior class of Alyssa Chiquito, Nicole Gentile, Madison Lester, Malloy, Hannah Organ, Madison Schicker and Rachel Wilczak and then snapped a seven-game losing streak dramatically.

Organ (15 points, 12 rebounds) and Wilczak (8 points, 9 rebounds) were among key contributors with sophomore Emily Organ (9 points, 7 rebounds, 6 steals) and juniors Luna Lloyd (4 points, 6 rebounds) and Ava Marrello (6 points), who hit two key secondhalf threes.

The Bulldogs went from a 30-20 deficit just before halftime to a 44-38 lead on Marrello’s second three with 7:09 left before going scoreless until Malloy’s basket. When the Pirates missed a free throw, Emily Organ got the rebound and started the passing combination with Pacourek and Malloy.

On its final possession, Proviso East missed a three, got the rebound but had its shot blocked and RBHS gained possession on a jump ball. The Bulldogs called a timeout with 7.1 seconds and the Organs and Pacourek passed down court to run out the clock.

“It was a truly a great team win. Everyone played their part -- Shannon at the end. Everyone playing physical in the beginning,” Hannah Organ said.

“We started off a little slow but when we were all fully energetic in the fourth quarter, just picked it up, it makes it more fun and we obviously do a little bit better,” Wilczak added. “This is definitely one of [our best victories], because it’s one of the closest games where we had to step up and all, get it together.”

“I think the student section helped, because they were super positive towards us,” Malloy said. “Then with all of our teammates, they did all of this up [with decorations], which was awesome, so it brought more positive energy, which I think helped us pull all the way through.”

Hannah Organ, who will play softball at Miami (Ohio) University, has returned from

an early-season knee injury to play basketball with Emily for the first time. Wilczak, who was struck in the nose at Rosary on Jan. 10, was reinjured against Proviso East and sat out roughly the final 12 minutes.

“I just wanted to stand up the whole time but we’re not allowed to do that [on the bench],” Wilczak said. “You’ve just got to jump for joy when you can.”

at the Glenbard East Sectional on Jan. 22 to reach the state meet.

Jackson Chadesh, a 2020 graduate who placed 10th at state as one of the Lions’ two individual qualifiers two seasons ago, happened to be among the spectators and was immedi-

ately summoned.

“We said, ‘Chadesh. We need a pep talk. Get us going for Game 5. Let’s go to state,’” Hennessy said. “He was able to give us a good pep talk, was able to clear all our heads for us and we had a great Game 5.”

The Lions rebounded in those final two games to finish third and earn their first team berth to the IHSA state finals since 2018 by finishing among the top six sectional teams.

Lions dance into fifth straight state finals

LTHS team heads to Bloomington to cap solid season

The Lyons Township High School competitive dance team is headed to the IHSA state meet for the fifth straight season.

The Lions advanced again by finishing fourth in its IHSA Class 3A division at the Deerfield Sectional on Jan. 22 with an 87.77 score. The top six sectional finishers advanced to the state meet Friday and Saturday in Bloomington.

LTHS team members are senior captains Alexis Carmody, Skylar Hennessy and Charlotte Remijas; seniors Ella Bylsma, Emma Chwierut, Morgan Fry, Georgia Katsoudas, Ellie Linder and Kathryn Rausch; juniors Abby Fix, Zoe Mathis, Leah Mini, Madison Niemiec, Gianna Ortega, Reilly Post, Audrey Schissler, Sarah Sedlacek, Madeleine Shorrock, Simryn Singh and Kaitlin Storey; and

sophomores Mya Campbell, Lola Hennessy, Riley McCarthy and Hallie Olenec. They are coached by Brittany Smith.

The Lions have reached the state finals all five times they have participated in the postseason. Seventeen current Lions competed in the 2021 state meet, which was conducted virtually.

“I think coming from the non-traditional season of last year really pushed them all to want the very best,” Smith responded. “This year’s team is definitely a special one. They are some of the most driven dancers I’ve had the pleasure of working with over the years.

They push themselves and each other to continue to grow as dancers and team members every practice.”

In Class 1A, Nazareth Academy qualified for state for the first time since 2017 by taking sixth at the Geneva Sectional (78.73).

LTHS boys, girls extend win streaks The Lyons Township High School boys basketball team extended its winning streak to eight by beating Proviso West 78-57 on Jan. 21 and Proviso East 76-46 Jan. 22.

Will Carroll (14 points, 12 rebounds) added a double-double against Proviso West and Graham Smith (19 points, 8 rebounds), Aidan Sullivan (12 points) and Billy Bach (10 points, 7 rebounds) also were in double figures.

Jackson Niego (17 points), Smith (15 points, 9 rebounds) and Nik Polonowski (13 points) also achieved double figures against Proviso East. Bach and Elliot Russell added 11 and seven rebounds, respectively.

The LLTHS girls won their sixth straight 8843 over Fenton at the Morton College Shootout on Jan. 22.

Hailey Markworth (20 points), Olivia Mezan (10 points) and Ella Ormsby (9 points) led the Lions (19-3).

LTHS wrestlers 6th at OPRF Invite Senior Cooper Schodrof (170 pounds) and sophomore Gunnar Garelli (126) both finished second for the Lyons Township High School wrestling team at the Oak Park and River Forest Invitational Saturday. The Lions were sixth (124 points).

Julian Espinoza (22-3) captured the 152-pound title. He won his championship match with a 45-second pin after previous pins in 4 minutes and 58 seconds.

Friars erase 19-point deficit, holds Bulldogs to 7 in second half

Fenwick High School boys basketball senior forward Brett Bohaboy was hoping to finally defeat neighborhood rival RiversideBrookfield High School in his career.

So it came as no surprise when he erupted with joy after his put-back basket with time expiring gave the host Friars a dramatic come-from-behind 38-36 victory over the Bulldogs on Jan. 22.

“I just tried to get the rebound [off a T.J. Stephenson miss]. I threw it up and it went in,” said Bohaboy, who finished with seven points and five rebounds. “It feels great. We lost to [RBHS] twice in the summer, but we

Fenwick (6-8) got off to a slow start against RBHS (14-4), trailing 19-5 after the opening quarter. With 3:46 left in the first half, the Friars found themselves staring at a 29-10 deficit. But sparked by good defense, the Friars went on a 13-0 run during the second and third quarters to climb back into the game.

“It all started on the defensive end,” Bohaboy said. “We got a few stops in a row and then the ball started going in for us.”

Fenwick freshman forward Nate Marshall, who was a key contributor at defensive end during the football team’s run to the IHSA Class 5A title in the fall, gave the

Friars a boost with 14 points and five rebounds.

“Even when we were down, we still had enough energy to come back,” said Marshall. “The toughness [from football] helps me in the paint.”

“Nate is a load to deal with down low,” Young said. “The biggest thing for him is being physical and staying on the court. As he continues to grow and his skills develop, we’re looking for huge things from him.”

The Friars trailed 32-26 after three quarters and kept chipping away in the fourth, taking a 36-34 lead on a Marshall basket with 3:28 remaining.

The Bulldogs’ Will Gonzalez tied the game on a driving layup with 39 second left. Fenwick called its final timeout to set up a play, and senior guard T.J. Stephenson (5 points) drove inside in the closing seconds. His pullup jumper missed, but Bohaboy grabbed the rebound and scored as time expired.

“This win skyrockets our confidence,”

Marshall said.

Joevonn McCottry had 11 points and J.P. Hanley eight for RBHS, which managed only seven points on two field goals in the second half. The Bulldogs shot just 29 percent (11-of-38) against Fenwick.

“Give Fenwick credit, they guarded really well and took us out of what we wanted to do offensively,” said RBHS coach Mike Reingruber. “We didn’t get into any rhythm in the second half.”

It’s the second consecutive last-second loss for RBHS, which fell to visiting Aurora Christian 74-70 on Jan. 21 in a Metro Suburban Conference game when the Eagles’ Drew Meyers converted a four-point play with 5.4 seconds remaining. McCottry had 21 points and Hanley 19.

“All the goals we have are still attainable,” Reingruber said. “We hit a roadblock this weekend, but we’re going to learn and get better from it, and we’re going to finish the year strong. We’re still a good team.”

Other postseason team members are senior Matt Skwarek and junior Michael Kubrick, who both competed at the Hinsdale South Regional on Jan. 15, and senior Xavier Gawel Barden.

None of the Lions has competed before at state, but LTHS coach Gary Morrill told them immediately after last season that they had the potential.

“I said, ‘[Next season] starts now and it starts

with all of you. I want you guys to be together.

Get your own chat group. Go out and practice together.’ And they did,” Morrill said. “This year we started pretty much where they left off at [in 2021] and we were just able to build.”

After their lowest score in the fourth game (960) at the Jan. 22 sectional meet, the Lions had dropped to sixth place. In the fifth game, they improved to 1,150 (230 average) – the second highest game score that day and one of the Lions’ best all season.

After only three open frames, they finished the game with 42 consecutive marks (28 strikes, 14 spares). Hennessy’s fifth-game high of 257 included seven straight strikes and 10 overall.

“Individually, I’ve been bowling great.

I’ve been able to string the strikes together, which is the biggest part,” Hennessy said.

“But I’m more happy with how we did as a team and that’s definitely more fun to go as a team to state.”
