April is Foot Health Awareness Month

I

n the Midwest, this is the perfect time of year to discuss the feet. As the temperatures increase, people are getting more active and noticing new or nagging problems with their feet. Many are training for races or taking up outdoor activities and sports that they cannot partake in during the cold weather.

People are pulling off their heavy socks and snow or winter boots and putting on more Spring friendly shoes and notice their toenails or skin look different after the months of cold and wet weather. Some people have been putting off their foot problems because it was just too cold outside, and they did not feel like dealing with the issue over the cold winter months.

The foot is a complicated structure that contains 28 bones, many small muscles, tendons, and ligaments hold it together and help it to function. There are many things that can cause our feet to hurt. Foot pain can be caused by other issues with our bodies, the way we walk, our weight, our genetics, injuries, and other causes.

Since the foot is connected to the rest of the body, the knees, hips, and back can also cause pain and problems with the feet. That sore hip or knee that has caused you to limp all winter, may be the reason your heel has started to hurt, for example. Additionally, many diseases, such as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, peripheral vascular disease, and others, can dramatically affect our feet through changes to the nerves, blood flow, immunity, and skin. Small things

like blisters or itchy skin can become big problems for patients with chronic illnesses.

Obesity has become a more common cause of foot pain and deformities. The added body weight puts more stress on our feet and can lead to pain. Many foot conditions improve and can be controlled into the future by losing weight. The challenge for some is finding an exercise plan for losing weight that does not further aggravate the feet, and biking, water aerobics, and swimming are often good choices.

Genetics and our gait (or how we walk) can lead to a variety of foot problems and pain. Many people are surprised that the tender bump on their big toe is actually a bunion that their grandmother, mother, and all of their aunts also have suffered with for several generations. Additionally, their flat feet and the fact that their toes are pointed out when they walk are putting additional pressure on their posterior tibial tendon, which extends from the leg down into the side and bottom of the foot. This can cause pain, swelling, and difficulty standing, walking, going on tip toes, and standing on one foot.

Obviously, one of the greatest causes of foot pain is an actual injury. Falls, twisted ankles, bumping or dropping something on the foot, stepping on objects, collisions, car, motorcycle, and bike accidents, and other traumatic incidents can injure the foot. A clinical exam, x-rays, and advanced imaging tests like MRI or CT scans may be used to fully diagnose the extent of

Dr. Bender ventured into solo practice 6 1/2 years ago with only an urge to help people, the support of her family, and eleven years’ experience practicing on the south side of Chicago in a large podiatry practice (Jondelle Jenkins, DPM). Working with Dr. Jenkins gave her solid experience but more importantly invaluable development and support.

Today’s healthcare field is constantly changing with the discovery of new techniques, more advanced imaging and treatment options, and most recently, with electronic health records. Dr. Bender offers comprehensive foot and ankle services, including digital x-rays, easy street parking, in office physical therapy, and Russian, Spanish, and Polish translation.

She offers convenient hours, including evenings, and even a willingness to make off-hour house calls when necessary; particularly within the Village of Oak Park, which she calls home.

When asked what motivates her, Dr. Bender first cites three things, the love and support of her husband who never once questioned leaving the financial security of Dr. Jenkins’ large practice for the relative unknown of starting out on her own. Second, she credits her two young daughters and her desire to have them see that goals can be achieved with a dream along with focus and hard work. But lastly she credits the years she spent figure skating as building the foundation entirely upon which her work ethic is based. The best part of her job is seeing patients returning pain free for their follow up appointments—knowing she has provided the care that made such a positive impact in another person’s life.

ational Nutrition Month® is a time to focus on making informed food choices and developing healthy eating and physical activity habits. Small changes to the way you eat can have big health benefits — helping to prevent health problems like heart disease, high blood pressure, and type-2 diabetes.

The 2015–2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, developed by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), provides key recommendations to encourage healthy eating.

Healthy Eating Patterns The Dietary Guidelines focuses on eating patterns — the combination of food and beverage choices over time. Healthy eating patterns include a variety of nutritious foods like vegetables, fruits, grains, low-fat and fat-free dairy, lean meats and other protein foods and oils. They limit saturated fats, added sugars, and sodium.
