D209 board approves new superintendent contract Rodriguez offered 5-year contract in 4-3 vote By MICHAEL ROMAIN Staff Reporter

The Proviso Township High Schools District 209 school board approved a five-year contract for Supt. Jesse Rodriguez during a contentious regular meeting on June 12 that could prove ominous, with some people referencing allegations of racist hiring and workplace practices lodged against the administration to argue why the school board should vote the contract down. The board voted 4-3 in favor of Rodriguez’s new contract. Board members Rodney Alexander, Claudia Medina, Ned Wagner and Sam Valtierrez voted for it, while Theresa Kelly, Amanda Grant and Della Patterson voting against it. The new contract, which extends from the June 20, 2018-19 to the 2022-23 school years, entails gradual salary increases over the next five academic years. Starting next school year, Rodriguez will collect a base salary of $228,960, which will gradually grow to $257,648 by 2023. Currently, Rodriguez makes a base salary of $234,090, according to district records. One who survived the Great Circus Train Wreck Hagenbeck-Wallace disaster occurred 100 years ago this week By JOHN RICE Contributing Reporter

The Great Circus Train Wreck of 1918 occurred 100 years ago on June 22, 1918. The focus of the centennial has been on the 56 members of the Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus who are buried in the mass grave at Showmen’s Rest in Woodlawn Cemetery. However, thanks to the efforts of family historian, Michael Dierickx and his nephew, Drew Badger, the life and legacy of survivor, Joseph Dierickx has been brought to light. Joseph Filbert Dierickx was a member of

“The Great Dierickx Brothers” strongman act. The trio included his brother, Arthur and Max Freehand. Their signature stunt was to support a bridge with their legs, while elephants walked across it. The three were asleep on the circus train, when an empty troop train smashed into the rear cars. Arthur and Max were killed and Joseph Dierickx was thrown from the car. The wreckage was quickly engulfed in flames. Brakeman Oscar Timm pulled the unconscious Dierickx to safety. He remained unconscious for 30 hours, while he was treated at St. Antonio’s Hospital

in Gary, having suffered a skull fracture and multiple fractures to his jaw and leg. He was temporarily paralyzed on one side. The first face he saw when he awoke was his nurse, Marie Jones. The crash coincided with Dierickx’s 33rd birthday. He had been born in Belgium on June 22, 1885. His last name is common there and he later Americanized the pronunciation to “Derricks.” In 1906, Dierickx left his family to serve as a “captain’s boy” on a steamer sailing between Antwerp and America. Hoover’s cautionary tale: The businessman president

e’ve only elected two businessman presidents, so I was curious to see what happened under the first one. Herbert Hoover, like Richard Nixon, was a Quaker. Like Nixon, he was not born to a family of wealth and privilege. In fact, he was born inside his father’s blacksmith shop. Hoover studied engineering at Stanford University and became a highly-successful mining engineer and consultant. He made a fortune in the coal business and worked on projects across the globe. Before becoming president, Hoover never served in the military or held elected office. But he did serve as head of the FDA and as Commerce Secretary. Hoover campaigned on the slogan “Make America Great Again.” He ran as a “dry” candidate supporting Prohibition. His Democratic opponent, Alfred E. Smith, was not only a “wet,” he was Roman Catholic. Hoover owed his victory to a strategy that appealed to southern white voters. By assuring them that race relations would remain status quo, he cracked the Democratic stranglehold on the South. He was the first Republican to take Texas and won the presidency with 58% of the popular vote. When Hoover was elected in 1928, Republicans held the majority in Congress. The

economy was robust but wages were stagnant and there was vast income inequality. There was also a growing economic bubble, as lending increased, enabling Americans to buy houses and cars. Hoover encouraged Americans to save and believed in balancing the federal budget by raising taxes on the wealthy. After the stock market crash, Republicans pressured Hoover to slap tariffs on imports to help struggling farmers. Hoover believed in international trade but reluctantly signed the SmootHawley Tariff Act in 1930. The name of the act may sound funny but its consequences were not. The act caused other countries to retaliate. It hurt international trade and led to increasing nationalism overseas. Ironically, it hurt American farmers the most. Economists had warned Hoover not to sign the act. Henry Ford called it “economic stupidity.” Protectionist policies led to 10 years of economic pain and kept Republicans out of the White House for the next 20 years. Hoover was a populist president. He blamed Mexicans for the country’s economic problems and started the Mexican Repatriation program. It caused the forced migration of 500,000 to 2,000,000 Mexicans, 60% of whom were birthright citizens. In other ways, Hoover was progressive when it came to minorities. His vice presi-

dent, Charles Curtis, was the first NativeAmerican to hold that position. His wife, Lou, also set an example by inviting the wife of the only African American serving in Congress to dine at the White House. Hoover was internationally praised as a humanitarian. He headed relief programs in Belgium during World War I. After the war, he led the American Relief Administration to help the people of other European countries. With his domestic policies, Hoover was well-intentioned. He thought he could engineer peace and prosperity. However, unemployment peaked at 25 percent during the Great Depression and Americans blamed him for the mess. FDR defeated him by a landslide, following his one term. After his defeat, Hoover opposed FDR’s New Deal policies and was against the U.S. entering World War II. He had better relations, though, with Roosevelt’s successor, Harry S Truman. In the play Give ’Em Hell Harry, there is a memorable scene in which Truman warmly welcomes Hoover to the Oval Office. Praising Hoover’s humanitarian background, he appoints him to help with post-war relief efforts in Europe. The former president starts crying. Hoover believed he could apply business principles to running the government. Neighbors pull distracted driver from smoking wreck

Chevy Malibu struck a parked car about 5:03 p.m., June 17, on the 1100 block of Circle, causing the vehicle to flip on its side and skid north down the street, said Deputy Police Chief Michael Keating. After the car turned over, it started smoking. Several neighbors called police, then ran out of their homes and helped the young driver climb from the wreck. “I’m almost 60, so over the years you see things and, like everybody, you run over and do your best to help,” said Geoff BinnsCalvey, a neighbor who held open the door for the young man to climb out. “That’s what any decent person does, and we’re full of decent people around here.”

Hearing a loud thump, Binns-Calvey said, he ran out of his house, and saw the gray car on its side. Approaching the vehicle, where he could barely make out a young man, roughly 19, against the driver’s side window, which was down against the pavement. Binns-Calvey and three neighbors held open the passenger side door, while the man climbed out of the smoking Malibu. He then helped the driver call his mother, who lived down the street. “I didn’t save anyone yesterday, I just came by and helped hold the door. I did what every other neighbor who heard the crash did,” Binns-Calvey said. Keating said numerous neighbors called police about the crash, which he said was likely the result of distracted driving and speeding. The man was charged with driv-

Aux. officer didn’t properly secure weapon, chief says Stolen gun was later used in fatal shooting in Forest Park By NONA TEPPER Staff Reporter

The Forest Park auxiliary police officer, whose gun was stolen and later used to kill a man, did not properly secure his weapon, according to Police Chief Thomas Aftanas. The man will not be allowed to perform his official duties until sworn police officers have further investigated the burglary, Aftanas said. “Throughout the years there have been guns taken out of vehicles in Forest Park, in residential burglaries, and it’s not just in Forest Park, it’s throughout the entire Chicago area that it happens,” the police chief said. Between 3 and 8:30 a.m. on June 9, someone broke into a Volkswagen parked on the 300 block of Circle and stole a Glock 9 mm pistol, ammunition, and a Forest Park Police Department-issue nylon belt, according to the police report. The auxiliary officer told police he parked in front of St. John Lutheran Church that morning and planned to go to the gun range the next day. “A gun that’s in a vehicle, in the back seat of a vehicle or in plain view of the vehicle, at

least in my opinion, would not be proper storage,” Aftanas said. While he said there are no official storage requirements, he believes guns should be locked in glove compartments, trunks or otherwise secured in a safe. When he’s off-duty, Aftanas said, he keeps his gun in a safe at home. “Gun-related homicides are rare in Forest Park, but obviously they do [happen] and can happen anywhere,” he said. At 1:30 p.m. the same day, someone found some of the auxiliary officer’s stolen goods. A man discovered the missing police belt while walking west in the Bergman Court alley, according to a separate police report. The man picked up the belt, walked to Healy’s Westside, 7321 Madison St., and called police, asking them to pick it up. The black nylon belt contained an empty gun holster, radio pouch, a pair of handcuffs and two partially loaded gun magazines. Police put out a notice to all officers, saying they found the department-issued items. The auxiliary officer checked his car and found his belt and pistol missing, as well as a bulletproof vest. He then noticed several pry marks to his driver’s-side door. The officer positively identified the belt as his, and told police the

Glock pistol contained an empty magazine. The man had worked part-time for the department since January 2015 and was not onduty when the theft occurred, Aftanas said, noting that he hadn’t worked in the department for weeks. When he did work, he acted in the same capacity as other auxiliary officers, riding along with full-time officers, helping control crowds at local events, directing traffic for church-goers at Living Word Christian Center among other duties. Auxiliary officers must apply for the position at village hall, complete 40 hours of state gun training and interview with staff before being accepted. They are not sworn police officers, earn $14.60 per hour, and Aftanas said the department generally tries to pair them with sworn police. In addition to meeting these requirements, the man also held a valid concealed/carry permit with the state of Illinois. “It’s equipment necessary to do his job here, and it has to be properly stored,” Aftanas said. The man’s gun was found the following morning, after police responded to calls of shots fired about 4:28 a.m. and found a man lying at the intersection of Elgin and Adams,

according to a separate police report. Officers arrived at the scene and found Michael Harris, 66, of Chicago, lying on the sidewalk with his eyes open and a pool of blood streaming from his head. Forest Park, Oak Park and River Forest searched nearby yards, until they found a man who matched the description of the subject crouching in a crawl space on the 700 block of South Maple. Martell Dorsey, 23, of Maywood, emerged, was handcuffed and taken to the station. Police charged Dorsey with one count of first-degree murder and one count of felony murder in the commission of robbery. The Forest Park Investigative Division, along with the West Suburban Major Crimes Task Force and Forensics, are investigating the shooting. The gun he used was identified as the auxiliary officer’s stolen pistol. Dorsey is currently in Cook County Jail on a $250,000 bond. His next court date is June 26 at Maybrook Courthouse in Maywood. “I know people are shaken up by this, but I think it was a random crime,” Aftanas said. “If any positive can be taken about it, he was quickly apprehended and charged.” CONTACT: ntepper@wjinc.com

District 91 approves 10-year infrastructure survey

Members of the Forest Park School District 91 Board of Education unanimously approved an architectural firm’s proposal to survey its five buildings as part of the state-mandated 10year life safety-survey for schools throughout Illinois. Board members approved proposal from Wight & Company at a cost not to exceed $46,000 at their regular meeting on June 12. The Darien-based architecture, engineering and construction firm will go into all the district’s buildings and survey the heating, air conditioning, lighting and more, looking into any-

thing that could impact the safety of students. Wight & Company will start the survey by mid-July, and should be done looking at the buildings by the end of the year, said Ed Brophy, assistant superintendent for operations. “They’ll determine what needs improvement, replacement, if there’s anything that needs to be brought up to compliance, that sort of thing,” Brophy said at the meeting. The school board did not solicit bids for the plan because it retains Wight as the district’s architectural firm of record.

Wight & Company is the same firm that completed designed and managed construction of an addition at Betsy Ross Elementary School in 2014, and their familiarity should speed up examination of the building, Brophy said. Once the life safety survey is complete, Brophy said he expects the district to plan on “substantial expenditures” to update the compressor units at Forest Park Middle School and Field-Stevenson Elementary School. At the May 12 Board of education meeting, Brophy also said District 91 likely will need to install a new roof at its district office and a

The kids’ race starts at 3 p.m., and adults run at 4 p.m. Proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society; the 100 Chicago Club, which provides support to families of first responders who have fallen in the line of duty; as well as local charities, including the food pantry at the Howard Mohr Community Center, AllSchool Picnic, the mayor’s annual toy drive and more. FEMA grant for new fire truck Race attendees might get to ogle the Forest Park Fire Department’s truck, which the department purchased in July 2017 for $450,000 from the Florida-based E-One manufacturing firm. Officials from the Federal Emergency Management Agency awarded the Forest Park Fire Department $428,572 in grant funding to pay for the truck, and the village picked up the rest of the check.

Fire Chief Bob McDermott said the new engine replaced a 20-year-old truck that was falling apart. “We wanted something that was basic; we didn’t want something with a lot of bells and whistles,” McDermott said. “We wanted something that was really a bare bones fire engine, making it quicker, safer, easier for our guys to pull the hose off and help us do our job.” CONTACT: ntepper@wjinc.com

The Kiwanis Club of Forest Park and 209 Together are partnering to raise $6,000 for hard-working, college-bound students of Proviso Township District 209 High Schools through “Great Chefs Feeding College Dreams,” a fundraiser that will be held at 7 p.m. on June 28 on the rooftop of the Urban Pioneer Group, 7503 Madison St. Proceeds from the fundraiser, the tickets for which are $50, will go toward $1,000 scholarships to students Rickia Zollicoffer and Raneen El-Barbarawi, of Proviso East; Annalyse Le Faire and Sonali Rajput, of Proviso West; and Trevor Moore and Omolabake Oyetayo, of Proviso Math and Science

Scholarship winners had to submit essays, academic transcripts and letters of reference to be considered for the “Overcoming Adversity” and “Persistence Pays” scholarship categories. “I think a lot of the review committee has seen themselves in the applications and essays we read,” said Michelle Woehrle, a volunteer organizer. “We know that these kids are heading in the right direction, even if some have had a bumpy start. And that a nudge and hand up from their community will give them the encouragement they need to keep going.” Scholarship winners have previously attended colleges across Illinois and the country, including Triton College, Northwestern University, Cornell University and

more, according to a press release. Half the former winners are the first person in their family to attend college, a quarter have experienced homelessness during their time in school and all have maintained nearly an ‘A’ grade point average. All plan to use their education to give back to the world in some way. “If the fundraiser goes well, we will be able to fund more students and smaller renewal amounts for previous winners,” said Ken Snyder, a member of 209 Together. This year the group also plans on making an additional, $500 scholarship available to previous year’s recipients. This is the third year that the groups have awarded scholarships to Proviso students— raising a total of $12,000 previously—and

this will be the first scholarship fundraiser 209 Together has played host. Attendees will enjoy food prepared by the “great chefs” from Gaetano’s Restaurant, the Heritage, New Rebozo, Zesty Catering, Blue Max and Azucar Rococo Cake Studios. Haymarket Pub & Brewery, 90+ Cellars and Famous Liquors will donate wine and beer. Village Free Press Editor-In-Chief Michael Romain, who is also a staff reporter for the Forest Park Review’s parent company, will emcee the event. Donations to the scholarship fundraiser should made to the nonprofit Kiwanis Club of Forest Park Foundation so they can be tax exempt. A volunteer makeover for the American Legion Renovations started a year ago after the organization came under new leadership

After nearly 100 years, a team of volunteers is working to renovate American Legion Post 414, a residential home that was built around 1921 by a group of local veterans of World War I. “We want everybody from soup to nuts, young, old to come use it and experience it,” said Mike Thompson, a member who helps coordinate rentals at the 500 Circle Ave. facility. Thompson served for 33 years as a sergeant major in the U.S. Army and is also a retired Forest Park police officer, who joined the Legion in 2008 after he came off active military duty. “Every situation is different and every party’s different,” he said. “We want to treat everybody like they’re coming to Uncle Herbie’s basement, and they have a good time.” After about a year of renovations, the Legion Hall has been transformed into more than just a place for middle-aged vets to hang out, drink beer and watch sports. So far this year it has hosted quinceneras, bat mitzvahs, weddings and more, and generated at least $7,000 in profit, Thompson said. The staff dreams of eventually hosting fish frys every Friday night. Thompson credits the Legion’s renaissance to its big makeover — it no longer smells like an old-man bar and cigarettes, he said — and the unique offering it brings to the community. “We want to keep the old charm here; we don’t want to totally modernize it to the point that it’s sterile,” he said. “It’s going to be successful because this community needs something like this; there’s no other place like it in town.” Renovations started about a year ago after the Legion came under new leadership and realized that rentals were the primary way to generate revenue for the organization. The group paid $17,000 for new air conditioning, about $13,000 for a new boiler, and has invested “substantially” in other updates, like a new stove and refrigerator, Thompson said. Everything else — appliances, labor, materials — has been donated. HOBO donated the counter tops for the new bathrooms. Friends restrung lighting, and brought in new tables, chairs and most of the building materials. Volunteer contractors tore down the dark wood wall paneling, and applied a fresh coat of white paint. Renovating the space serves as a way to generate revenue, but also as a way to introduce new members to the organization. After members of the Postal Union saw the updated space, they started hosting meetings at Post 414 once a month. “If we can get local people invested, especially younger people, that’s the goal be-

Community Center staff plan to sew new curtains for the windows. The Legion plans to redo the basement floors, replacing linoleum that hasn’t been updated in nearly 70

years. Officials are looking at painting the stucco outside, and plan to solicit bids for the kitchen, for a contractor to redo the cabinets, formica and other devices. Thompson said one woman has already asked about renting the Legion to house her catering business.

“You don’t want to be captain of a sinking ship; you want to be part of something that’s growing,” said Eric Van Ness, a member. “There’s a whole lot of underserved vets out there and that’s something that we can support.” CONTACT: ntepper@wjinc.com

Paying up for sewers

This newspaper was created just for you

orest Park’s village government has a chronic operating deficit issue. No one debates it. It’s as real as the red numbers on the page. And very few people would argue that the village government is spending wildly and needs to substantively cut costs. The need then is for added revenues. As a non-home rule community, Forest Park has limited options on raising revenues via higher taxes or new fees on services. Facing a notable budget shortfall in the year ahead, the village council has already hiked a number of fees. That’s good and it is necessary. Now the mayor and council are looking at the possibility of adding a new fee on sewer use. In our view, overdue. The council voted unanimously this month to have its engineering firm present sewer fee comparisons to other communities and to propose multiple options for how new charges might be levied. There has been some Facebook chatter that the village is overpaying for this study and proposal and the cost, at $24,500, seems like a high margin sale for Christopher Burke Engineering. But that’s micromanaging a relationship the village government clearly values with its consultant. The point is that there are direct costs associated with operating, and investing in, an aging sewer system. And in this ala carte age, taxpayers need to pay those fees. Move this ahead.

Auxiliary officer’s gun

It is hard to imagine the mix of emotions you would feel after a gun you owned was stolen from your car and almost immediately used in the senseless murder of an older man on the streets of your town. Those emotions would be more complex if you were a member of your town’s auxiliary police force. That’s the situation in Forest Park right now. It is a disturbing situation that leaves Michael Harris, 66, dead; Martell Dorsey, 23, his alleged murderer in jail, and the unnamed auxiliary officer having rightly submitted his resignation this weekend. Chief Tom Aftanas is right and honest in saying that the auxiliary officer erred in not having properly secured his Glock pistol when he parked his car near St. John Lutheran. According to the auxiliary officer’s statement to police, he had left his department-issued “duty belt” — pistol, holster, handcuffs, radio pouch — on the back seat of his car. Dorsey allegedly broke into the car and stole the gun, the belt, ammunition, and a bulletproof vest. Then, allegedly, he committed murder in what may have been a robbery. Make no mistake, if convicted, this murder is on Dorsey. Aftanas told the Review he believes guns left in cars should be locked up in a glove compartment, trunk, or gun safe. Not surprisingly, Aftanas did his best to distance the officer from his department, saying he was not on duty, had not been on active duty for some while, and he was not a sworn police officer. Even so, his department had bestowed some level of policing power in this person, provided a badge, a uniform, required a gun and training, and all for duties Aftanas describes as most typically being traffic control. This is done. But some review of the role of auxiliary police officers must be undertaken.

D209 athletic workers to get pay raise, new scorers tables Pay doubles to $40 per game By MICHAEL ROMAIN Staff Reporter

Announcers, timers, scorers and others who work at athletic events for Proviso Township High Schools District 209 will soon get a bump in pay, the first in at least 10 years. During a regular board meeting on May 8, the D209 school board voted unanimously to increase athletic event workers’ pay from a $20 flat rate per game to a $40 flat rate per game starting July 1. District officials explained in a board document released last month that the workers have been paid $20 a game for the last 10 years, with some games lasting three to four hours, and that it has been increasingly difficult to fill positions at a

rate of $5 per hour per four-hour game. During the May meeting, board member Theresa Kelly said that she would like to see the “people who had been working these jobs [before the pay bump] to get first preference to keep working. We need to make sure that they’re not overlooked.” D209 Supt. Jesse Rodriguez explained at the meeting last month that his administration found that some workers “were making $4 an hour because of the flat rate and the amount of hours they were putting in.” District officials explained that the amount of money that D209 athletic workers were getting paid was much lower than athletic workers at other schools in the Illinois High School Association Silver Division. Compensation ranged from $5 to $24

per hour across the division. For instance, workers at Addison Trail get $96.95 per football game, and $81.64 for volleyball, soccer and basketball games. At Hinsdale Central, workers get $73.45 for working zero to four hours; $110.20 for working between four and six hours; and $146.93 for working six or more hours. “I’m excited about giving them more money,” said D209 board President Ned Wagner during last month’s board meeting. Board member Claudia Medina praised the workers, saying that “their dedication is incredible” and “the way they support our kids and work with our teams is remarkable. I was so happy to see this because I believe they deserve much better remuneration.”

Rodriguez said that he hopes that he can bring back to the more a proposal for additional compensation in the future. “Right now, it’s a good move,” he said.

Fidgety man damages police department cell door Police spotted Aaron Lee Hughes sitting at a bench and “fidgeting” at the intersection of Franklin and Marengo about 8:22 a.m. on June 13. Police smelled cannabis on him, and asked Hughes, 29, of Chicago, what he had in his hands. He revealed a lighter, reportedly told police he had marijuana and then threw it behind him. Officers asked Hughes his name several times, but he stared blankly ahead and stayed silent. Police told him if he did not tell them his name he would be guilty of obstruction, but Hughes remained silent. Officers told Hughes he was under arrest, and he began yelling, flailing his arms and telling police he was recording the encounter on “Facebook Live.” Police handcuffed Hughes, who continued to yell obscenities and threaten officers. Hughes was transported to the Forest Park Police Department, where he kicked a cell door with such force that he knocked the bottom part off of it and broke its lock, causing $520 worth of damage. Hughes received a felony charge for criminal damage to government supported property.

Computer scam A Forest Park resident told police she was the victim of computer fraud about 8:36 a.m. on June 12. The woman, 74, who lives on the 700 block of Polk Street, told police she talked to AT&T on June 10 because she thought she had viruses on her

computer. The next day, a man claiming to be an AT&T technician called her, and charged her $410 to remove all the viruses from her computer. She said the man had complete control over her computer, even printing the receipt remotely so she could keep it for her files. She closed her bank account and plans to wipe her hard drive clean.

Apartment trashed, electronics and cash stolen A woman told police she arrived at her apartment, 125 Desplaines Ave., about 11:14 p.m. on June 12, and found her apartment trashed with several items missing. Someone dumped clothes, shoes and cleanser all over the floor; hot sauce all over the kitchen; and shampoo and shower gel throughout the bathroom. She said shoes and clothes were missing, as well as $2,300 cash and a $650 TV. The victim told police she has never had a key to the apartment, that the front door is usually unlocked, and that she had been staying with her sister for the last three months. Police also noticed a window pane missing from the back door.

Tools lifted from trunk Two men stole a bag full of tools from a Nissan parked on the 7700 block of Van Buren about 4:45 p.m. on June 12. The victim told police he left his trunk

partially open. The offenders opened the trunk, and removed a bag containing three saws, a drill, conduit bender, extension cord, five screwdrivers, and various electric couplings, all worth a total of $1,000.

Pocket picked on Green Line Between 2 and 3:30 p.m. on June 12, a man’s wallet was stolen while he rode the Green Line. The victim, 70, told police the wallet contained $400 cash, Bank of America and Mastercard credit cards, an insurance card, Ventra card and Colorado state ID.

Lifted laptop Between 4:30 p.m. on June 13 and 8:30 a.m. on June 14, someone broke into a car parked on the 900 block of Elgin and stole a laptop valued at $750.

Truck, trailer taken An employee of U-Haul Moving & Storage, 801 Harlem Ave., told police someone rented a pickup truck and trailer about 4:23 p.m. on June 3 and never returned the items. On June 13, the trailer was discovered in an abandoned alley in Chicago. The truck is still missing.

Broken car burglarized Between 8 a.m. on June 6 and 1 p.m.

on June 16, someone stole $200 worth of makeup, the front and rear plates, and an insurance card from a Hyundai at Currie Motors, 8401 Roosevelt Road. The victim told police she dropped her car off to be repaired and employees told her the car had been transferred to two different repair shops during its time there.

Garage break-in Between 1 and 7 a.m. on June 17, someone broke into a garage on the 1000 block of Ferdinand and stole two tables, a tent, a jump house and air compressor, radio, speaker and video recorder, all worth a total $700. The victim told police she left her garage door open overnight.

Clothes stolen At 9:50 p.m. on June 17, two customers placed their items in dryers at The Laundry Room, 206 Desplaines Ave., returned 30 minutes later, and found their machines opened and various items missing. The total loss is valued at $50. These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Forest Park Police Department, June 12-17, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

A hazardous journey from page 1 Dierickx was well-suited for the job. He stood 5-feet-10, weighed 180 pounds and was skilled at self-defense. He had a stocky build and a huge chest. On his final trip to Boston, the captain suggested that he stay in America. In their adopted country, Joseph and Arthur Dierickx went into vaudeville. They surfaced in the 1910 census, living in a boarding house in Chicago’s 21st Ward. Joseph’s occupation was listed as “actor/athlete.” It is not known how they went from vaudeville to the circus, but it seemed a natural career progression. Following the crash, Joseph Dierickx fell in love with his nurse, who was only 20 years old. She was the half-sister of Bonnie Rockne, wife of Notre Dame’s legendary football coach. This would later prove to be a valuable connection. Four months after the wreck, they married and moved to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. “He was on the police department,” Michael Dierickx explained, “He was part of the mounted police protecting the president of Bethlehem Steel during labor riots.” The couple had their first two children in Submitted photo Bethlehem.
