New Residents Guide Driver’s License To receive a driver’s license or ID card, you must provide a minimum of three acceptable forms of identification to prove name, date of birth, Illinois residency, Social Security number, and a signature comparison.

I was in the tactical unit early in my career; I was also an evidence technician and field training officer. I also became very close with the officers that I worked with. As a result, when the Illinois State Police lifted the hiring freeze and offered me the job again, I turned them down.

How long have you lived/worked in Forest Park?

Chief of Police Tom Aftanas OT. When they pull off an OT win I have to allow the adrenaline to wear off by watching an hour of replays. If they lose an OT game, such as the 2014 final game against the L.A. Kings, I can’t sleep. With three Stanley Cup wins it makes it all worth it.

I am also a long suffering Cubs fan. Unfortunately, they have not made the playoffs for a while so lack of sleep has not been an issue. I’m hoping this year is different.

What do you love about Forest Park?

There are several things I love about Forest Park. I love the people I work with, in all departments. Over the last 24 years I have developed a great working relationship with many employees as well as many friendships. I also love the community itself. I have met many residents, clergy and business owners/employees over the same time period. I love the fact that we at the police department are on a first name basis with so many stakeholders in our community. I believe this builds continued trust and communication which improves the quality of living and working in Forest Park.

Cora Sallee is one of the key figures in Forest Park history. In fact, without Cora, much of the village’s history would have been lost.

Following the tragic death of her husband, John, in a car accident in 1963, Cora was recruited by the library to clip noteworthy items from the local newspaper. Cora created a topographical archive of local history. This very searchable treasure is used by the historical society. Cora was a charter member of the society and served as its vice president. She was an accomplished musician and a tireless volunteer.

Cora died on June 18, 2003.

Howard R. Mohr H. J. Mohr & Sons Co. is a Redi-mix concrete plant at Garfield and Harlem in Oak Park. It was started in 1893, when the community was known as Harlem. Its founder, Howard J. Mohr, served as the last president of Harlem and first mayor of Forest Park.

His son, Howard R. Mohr, launched the family’s heating oil business in 1950, at Hannah and Harrison. Mohr went on to serve as state senator. The Mohr businesses continue to thrive.

How long have you lived/worked in Forest Park?

Yearbook Studios opened in September of 2011, and we’re pleased to be celebrating our fourth anniversary in this great town.

What brought you here, and what has kept you here?

The diverse stores and restaurants, as well as the urban appeal of Madison Street, seemed to make the right location for our concept. Yearbook was carefully planned as a combination home store and design studio—with each business contributing to the other. The collegiate back drop of the store was intended to create a sense of nostalgia in contrast to the hard-working sensibility of the Forest Park landscape. The storefront at 7316 Madison was an ideal space for the Yearbook concept—complete with high tin ceilings, tall leaded front windows and an office space in the back for our design studio.

What gets you fired up in the morning?

Design and people. The two things that inspire our entire business and which inform one another are what we depend

Frederick Hintze Frederick Hintze was a Forest Park pioneer, who built the structure at Des Plaines & Randolph, now known as Old School Tavern and Grill. Hintze was born in Germany in 1835.

He came to this area with a railroad crew to build a spur down Randolph Street. He quit the railroad in 1859 to become a carpenter. In 1887, he erected the tavern on Randolph.

Mohr Community Center, named in honor of the late state senator and Forest Park mayor, serves as a hub of both entertainment and social services. From supervising children before and after school to sponsoring weekly senior citizen trips to checking up on the elderly, disabled and shut-ins, the community center meets many needs.

Children’s Clubhouse Clubhouse is a before and after school daycare program for children who attend Forest Park public schools, grades K-6. Offered weekdays from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the school year.

Food Pantry The Community Education Food Pantry is available to residents in need of emergency food due to temporary unemployment or other financial need. Donations of canned or boxed, nonperishable food items are accepted year-round.

Each Thanksgiving, food baskets are delivered to Forest Park families who are in need. Food and gift baskets are also distributed at Christmas.

Pace Bus Passes Pace bus passes are available to adults at the rate of 11 passes for the price of 10. In addition, reduced fare rates for the passes are available to seniors and students.

Rules of the Road Review Class Offered periodically, the purpose of the course is to help citizens pass the Illinois drivers license renewal examination. Call for dates and times.

Altenheim German Old Peoples Home Altenheim German Old Peoples Home was established in 1885, at 7824 Madison. It began as a self-supporting community, with its own gas works and water system. It had a large farm, with livestock and 15,000 chickens.

Residents were required to perform daily chores, such as tending crops, slaughtering livestock and cooking

meals. It was designed by the same architect who planned Lincoln Park.

Altenheim was the setting for two Hollywood movies: “Harry and Tonto” featured an Oscar-winning performance by Art Carney; in “The Package” with Gene Hackman, it doubled for Allied HQ in Munich. Today, Altenheim features independent retirement apartments.

Senior Taxicab Discount Senior citizen taxicab coupon books can be purchased at the center at the cost of $7.50 for $10 worth of coupons. The coupons are used in lieu of cash when paying cab fare and never expire.

State of Illinois Mobile Drivers Service Available at the center, this service issues state IDs, renews driver licenses needing eye and/or written tests only, for individuals who are within a year of expiration.

It was first known as Steger’s and renamed “House of Candy” in French, during the 1960s. In 1990, restaurateur Tim Shanahan opened his namesake eatery at this location, serving Creole cuisine. In 2006, his wife, Radana, added a cozy candy store featuring French Cremes and

Abraham Van Schoick A civil war veteran, is buried in Forest Home cemetery, was born on Feb. 2, 1836 in New York. When the war broke out, his father, a wealthy physician donated $10,000 to purchase shoes for the Union soldiers. Abraham’s father died of fever tending the wounded. Abraham and his brother served in a regiment that re-built bridges destroyed by the Confederates. He carried a bible in his breast pocket throughout the war. After the war, he bought a house at 635 Beloit. He died on Dec. 21, 1928. His bible became part of the historical society’s collection.

Joseph C. Corbin He was an African-American born into freedom in 1833. He attended Ohio University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in art and two masters degrees. He migrated to Arkansas and was elected to its highest office of education. He founded Branch Normal College, which became the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. Luminaries like State Senator Danny Davis graduated from this university. Corbin died on Jan. 9, 1911 and is interred at Forest Home Cemetery.

On Memorial Day 2013, a headstone was placed on Corbin’s grave.

orest Park has over 680,000 dead and 15,000 living, giving it the Guinness World Record for having the greatest ratio of dead to living. Here is a list of some of the more notable persons interred in the village’s vast cemeteries. They include capitalists, artistic types, anarchists and disaster victims.

Eddie Balchowsky A famed one-armed pianist and antifascist, was born in 1916 in Frankfort, IL. His family was the only Jewish one in town and he faced anti-Semitism from an early age. Balchowsky trained to become a concert pianist. In 1936, he equated Hitler with his hometown and volunteered to fight the fascists in Spain. Balchowsky lost his right arm to a machine gun bullet. After the war, he continued his musical career, playing with the Mamas and Papas and other prominent groups. He died in 1989 and has a marker in Forest Home Cemetery, where his ashes were scattered.

Ferdinand Haase American Vault Co. was founded in Forest Park in 1880 by son of the village’s founder, Ferdinand Haase. Leo manufactured concrete products for cemeteries, helped organize the Village of Harlem and installed Forest Park’s first telephone. His son, Wilbert, revolutionized the cemetery business with the concrete burial vault, which was inspired by Egyptian pyramids. Wilbert died in 1959 and was laid to rest in Forest Home Cemetery, the burial ground founded by

Dr. Phyllis Orland She became one of the most beloved figures in Forest Park history.

She was a pioneering medical student at the University of Illinois, where only 10 percent of the students were female. She started her pediatric practice in 1954 at 519 Jackson.

Hundreds of families visited her office, which featured a child-sized examining table. She is buried alongside her husband in Forest Home Cemetery.

Menominee and Chippewa tribes The first recorded inhabitants of this area built villages along the Des Plaines River at what is now Roosevelt Road and North Avenue. In 1810, the powerful Potawatomi drove them out. During the Black Hawk War of 1832, troops under General Winfield Scott marched through this area to engage Black Hawk’s forces in Wisconsin. Following his defeat, the U.S. government relocated the Native Americans to a reservation in Kansas.

The burial mounds they left behind were found to contain silver artifacts from Montreal. There is a marker honoring them in Forest Home Cemetery.

Lucy Parsons was an early labor organizer and powerful orator. Born in Texas in 1853, she married Albert Parsons in 1871. He was a former Confederate soldier, who converted to anarchism. Parsons was executed for his alleged role in the Haymarket incident. Lucy carried on her husband’s campaign for workers’ rights. Forbidden to speak on soil in Illinois, she rented barges and addressed crowds on bridges over the Chicago River. She died in 1942 at the age of 89. She is buried in Forest Home Cemetery, not far from the monument honoring her husband and the other seven Haymarket martyrs.

Many victims of the Iroquois Theater Fire Many are buried in Forest Park. The new downtown theater lacked many safety features, such as sprinklers, alarms and water connections. Most deadly of all, its exit doors opened inward. An arc light sparked the fire on Dec. 30, 1903. Many died in the stampede to the exits. The 602 fatalities made it the deadliest theater blaze in U.S. history.

Ferrara Pan Candy Co. Ferrara Pan Candy Co. was born in a bakery in Chicago’s Little Italy in 1908. When candy surpassed cakes in sales production of panned candy shifted in 1920 to 2200 West Taylor. The Ferrara family still operates a bakery at this location. Production moved to 7301 Harrison St., Forest Park in 1959. Animal Licenses A license is required within 10 days of acquiring a dog or cat or upon the animal reaching four months of age. A certificate of inoculation against

rabies in the last 12 months must be presented to obtain the license. Dog and cat licenses are available at village hall.

Blood Pressure Testing The village offers free blood pressure testing at the fire station Mon.-Fri., 9 a.m.-5 p.m. For information call 366-1234.

Neighborhood Watch Neighborhood Watch is a national anti-crime program in which residents contribute to the effort of keeping their neighborhood safe. Organized on a block-by-block basis, the program encourages citizens to become alert to and report suspicious activity in their area. For more information to find out who your block captain is, call 366-2425. Meetings are at 7 p.m. the third Tues. of each month.

Overnight Parking Parking is prohibited on village streets from 2 a.m.-5 a.m. Residents who have overnight guests who park on the street must call the police department at 366-7272 to prevent the car from being ticketed.

Parking Permits Parking permits for space in village parking lots are available. Permits can be obtained for day parking, night parking or 24-hour parking.

The cost is $25 per month for night-only parking and $40 per month for 24-hour parking. Call the village clerk’s office at 366-2323 for more information.

lion artillery fuses. It manufactured its last torpedo in 1971. The plant was converted into the Forest Park Mall. The village was so proud of the plant, it issued vehicle stickers shaped like a torpedo.

The Forest Park Fire Department Speakers Bureau is available to address groups or organizations on various aspects of fire prevention and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Tours of the fire station also may be scheduled. Call the department at 366-1234 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Mon.Fri. to schedule a speaker or a group tour.

Tree Replacement The village will replace trees on public parkways in

front of residences at no cost.

Residents who wish to participate in the tree replacement program should contact the forestry department at 366-4876 to have their names placed on a list for the next season’s planting. A limited number of trees are available each year.

Vehicle Licenses/Stickers Vehicles of all village residents must display a current vehicle license/sticker displayed by April 1 of each year. Owners must present proof of residency and a title or state identification. Senior citizens 65 or older may purchase the license at a special rate with proof of age.

West Suburban Special Recreation Association The Park District of Forest Park, through West Suburban Special Recreation Association (WSSRA), offers more than 60 programs for Park District of Forest Park residents with disabilities. All ages and all ability levels are served in these therapeutic recreational activities.

Many programs are similar to

traditional park district classes.

The association’s swim lessons, fitness classes, scouting programs and day camp are some examples. At these programs, a recreation specialist will adapt how skills are taught, how much personal assistance will be given and if any equipment accommodation needs are to be arranged. Communication boards, wheelchair use, behavior management plans and other tools are used. Some programs require one-on-one staffing for a participant to be successful.

I have worked at the Park District for 26 years. I started out as Superintendent of Recreation, then Assistant Director, and in 2007 Director when Dave Novak retired.

What brought you here and what has kept you here?

I was working as a recreation supervisor in another town and I saw this opportunity come up. I had umpired softball here before so I was familiar with the community.

What has kept me here is the people. I have been blessed to meet some of the nicest people that I know living in Forest Park. I also have had the pleasure of working for some awesome commissioners, with fellow staff, and I was able to learn from one of the best in the business, Dave Novak.

What gets you fired up in the morning?

I love to see people enjoying the Park. I love coming to work and seeing the early

What keeps you awake at night?

In the summer, pool safety is my number one concern.

The pool needs to monitored seven days a week. The pool staff is great so they do put my mind at ease. Another concern I have is for those people, through no fault of their own, have trouble making ends meet. That’s where I think we need to step in and

help our neighbors out. For example we have seen some kids come to daycamp and the only meal they have is our free lunch program. Thanks to the Park District Staff for getting the grant to make this happen. Also thanks to the Park District Foundation in helping maintain the scholarship program to help those in need.

What do you love about Forest Park?

I love the fact that the Park District, Village and School District work together to make

sure the residents of this village have a great quality of life….

I love that the Chamber of Commerce is always there in support of Park District programs….

I love to see a smile on people’s faces as they take advantage of all that Forest Park has to offer…

And last but not least, I love that the residents have allowed me to be a part of the Park District and I hope that I have done a good job for them when all is said and done.

Public School No. 1 The village’s first school, Public School No. 1, was built at Circle and Randolph in 1877. In 1893, a large addition was built and the school was renamed in honor of President Grant. In 1928, a second addition was constructed. Some wanted to rename the school in honor of Elizabeth White, who taught there from 1890 to 1935. Ms. White died in 1956. A year later, the 1877 and 1893 structures were replaced by a new building. Grant-White, was one of five public schools built in Forest Park. The remaining are Garfield, Field-Stevenson, Betsy Ross and Forest Park Middle School.

In Our Corner Claudia Medina District 209 School Board Member How long have you lived/worked in Forest Park?

I have lived in Forest Park now for the past 13 years.

What brought you here, and what has kept you here?

When my husband and I were looking to purchase our first home, we looked for a town that had city access, diversity, a small town atmosphere and a place where we saw children playing outside.

I was teaching in Lemont at the time and living in Logan Square. One of my guitar student’s parents, Larry Moskus, helped me find a venue where I could put on a children’s guitar performance.

That venue ended up being at the Park District of Forest Park.

I fell in love with the park when I saw it and so did all the children that came with me that evening; they all wanted to play in the park. After the concert my husband and I drove around that night and looked around and fell in love with the charm of Forest Park. We went to dinner on Madison Street and saw a beautiful small town that was growing and changing. That night we decided Forest Park is going to be our new home. A few months later we found a house in Forest Park.

What gets you fired up in the morning?

I am definitely a morning person! I love to feel like I’ve accomplished something before I go to work. Having early morning coffee with my husband, my best friend, and watching the sunrise puts a smile on my face. This is how we keep a check on life. High on the priority list is making sure that I have a great healthy breakfast for my three kids so that their brains are charged with nutrients to have an excellent day.

What keeps you awake at night?

Not many things keep me awake.

Claudia Medina is the first Latina to sit on the Forest Park School Board.

Most of my friends know that I’m like an energizer bunny all day, at the end of the day my body shuts down and I go to sleep. Currently my mind is occupied with situations at Proviso Township.

How to best improve our high schools so that these are schools that provide our current and future youth with an education we can all be proud of.

There are not many places in the world where you can say my neighbors are my family now. That is how my husband and I feel about our town. People in our town, and on my block, look out for each other, we help each other, we support each other and we make music together.

This town is filled with unique and incredibly interesting civically oriented people. People that live in Forest Park

care about other people and care about our town. We are a diverse group of people and I love how diverse we are!

Beyond the people there is so much more to say about Forest Park! We have Madison Street’s beauty and all the unique businesses with the charm that you see as you walk down the street. We are so conveniently located in Forest Park; we have the Blue line for easy public transportation, or easy access to the highways. Then there are our policemen and all of our first responders that keep us safe, and civil servants who do their job and go above and beyond to help people.

Forest Park also has a plethora of activities provided by our park district, community center, library and many village sponsored activities for families to bring us all together. Our village has so much to offer and continues to provide more and more opportunities. I am really proud to live in Forest Park and grateful to be a part of this community.

After college, I had the opportunity to live in three different states: North Carolina, Virginia, and New York. I had lived in New York for three years when I got engaged to Sean Blaylock. Now it was time to decide where we were going to live. A short discussion happened and we decided Illinois would be the best place to live. So, after searching around the Oak Park, River Forest, and Forest Park areas, we chose to live in Forest Park and have been here for 21 years.

What gets you fired up in the morning?

I am currently a member of the faculty in the Engineering Technology Department at Triton College. Each day that I wake up, I get excited about having the chance to help students achieve their educational and career goals.

Education is a key factor to enhancing one’s quality of life, and I enjoy seeing my students have the ability to take care of themselves and their families.

There is really not much that literally keeps me up at night. I am involved in many work and community activities, so I cherish the moments I get to rest and recuperate for the next day. However, I am passionate about our environment and the education of our children. We as a nation have to be more involved to preserving our planet for the next generations. I believe that this also includes educating our children.

Forest Park Public Library The Forest Park Public Library began life in the old village hall, at Circle and Randolph. In 1946, the library board purchased a private home at 7555 Jackson for $20,000. In 1960, a sizable addition was built to accommodate its 25,000 volumes. Thirty years later, a $1 million donation from longtime Forest Park teacher, Helen Imber and a $2.7 million bond issue paid for the construction of the present library. It has 26,000 square feet and 102,000 volumes. Forty percent of Forest Park residents use the library. The Illinois House last week put a scare into officials of the state’s non-home rule communities — that’s any

Shutting down the devices could deprive Forest Park of hundreds of thousands of dollars in funds for general operations. River Forest could lose money intended for one-time capital improvements.

That the bill singled out non-home rule communities, which don’t have the options of bringing in additional revenue like neighboring communities such as Oak Park, angered administrators in both communities.

Harlem Golf Course The Harlem Golf Course was located where the Forest Park Mall now stands. It opened in 1901, as a “country club for the masses.” It was one of the finest 18-hole courses in the Chicago area and among the first to allow female golfers and offer them golf lessons. It had a luxurious clubhouse, a top chef and a golf pro imported from England. Owner Jack Condon poured so much money into the course, he was forced to sell it at a loss. A torpedo-manufacturing plant was built in 1938, destroying the course’s lush fairways and bent-grass greens.

Christmas Cheer Home Makeover Contest Thursday, Dec 17, 2015 This year the Park District will be holding its 12th annual Holiday Home Makeover Contest. The best decorated houses in Forest Park will receive FREE pool passes for up to four family members.

What a great way to beat next summer’s heat?

On December 17th, the Park District staff will serve as judges and drive through the Village to determine the winners. Factors being considered are: curb appeal, creativity, use of theme, place, use of yard, and house and originality. Families may win once every three years.

Sept 10, 2016 The Village of Forest Park will host the annual Ribfest at the Picnic Grove, 7824 Madison St. There will be activities for all members of the family.

Egg hunt March 19, 2016 Hunt for candy…meet the Easter Bunny…and much, much more! It’s that time of year once again when the Easter Bunny makes its annual visit to the Park District of Forest Park.

There will be separate hunts for toddlers through 4th graders. After the hunt, line up to meet the Easter Bunny. Don’t be late.

This invitational, hosted by the Park District of Forest Park, draws 16-inch softball players from all over the Chicago area for some high-level competition in a four-day tournament. The games draw thousands of spectators every year.

Forest Park Kids Triathlon May 28, 2016 Swim, bike and run your way through the park during the Park District’s 5th Annual Kids Triathlon.

This event is open to boys and girls from ages 7 to 14.

Fee is $35.

Did you know??

Oktoberfest Reflecting its German heritage, Forest Park was among the first suburbs to celebrate Oktoberfest. It was also one of the first to abandon it. In 1966, Peter Herdeg and the Harlem Mannerchor organized Oktoberfest on Madison Street. They wore lederhosen and served beer and brats. The festival became so popular that carnival rides and bands were added. The menu was expanded to include other German delights. It moved to Roosevelt Rd., where large crowds celebrated at the naval reserve center. A victim of its own success, Oktoberfest was discontinued due to rowdy crowds and lack of volunteers to run it.

Parky’s Parky’s, Forest Park’s iconic hot dog stand, was established at 329 Harlem in 1947. It is older than McDonald’s, Burger King and Wendy’s. It is famous for its unique beef and pork hot dogs and hand-cut fries. Their trademark “greasy bag” fries are so popular, they go through 400 pounds of potatoes a day. Dining at Parky’s is a family tradition. Parky’s was featured on TV as one of Chicago’s best hot dog stands. It is operated by Forest Park’s “hot dog lady,” Sonya Flores.
