The curious case of Dankwoods Dispensary

Fake marijuana retailer pretended to operate at address of local bar

Since the sale of recreational marijuana was legalized in Illinois in 2020, residents of Forest Park have had to travel out of town to indulge. But after nearly two years of waiting, one business’ fleeting promise to bring legal weed to the village suddenly vanished into thin air, and in doing so revealed a prolific scam that a bar manager, who was unwittingly dragged into the con, said first popped up a year earlier.

Dankwoods Dispensary, a four-star-rated store whose Google listing included pictures of a brightly lit shop with racks of product and smiling customers, set up operations in Forest Park most recently this November, and it wasn’t long afterward that Matt Sorice started seeing customers walk through his front door.

The problem for Sorice is he didn’t know the first thing about Dankwoods Dispensary, even though the shop’s listed address, 7307 Roosevelt Road, was the same as the bar he manages, Carole’s Next Best Thing.

“At first I didn’t realize it was a scam being run,” Sorice said. “I just thought it was a wrong address, and we all thought it was kind of funny. Then one day See DANKWOODS on page 6

Report card shows slumping scores in District 91 Performance on state assessments during pandemic-altered school year not major cause for concern, superintendent says

The Illinois Report Card also tracks demographic statistics and, as has been the case for many years, District 91’s student population is predominantly Black (45.9%), followed by white students (27%), Hispanic (14.5%), two or more races (8.6%) and Asian (3.9%). But five-year trends show the Black enrollment dropping steadily — it was 52.9% in 2016 — and white enrollment rising, up from 22.3% five years ago.

The district’s achievement gap, however, remains stark, something Alvarez and other school leaders have pointed to as an area of major concern.

Black students scored a staggering 43 perFILE centage points worse on the IRA’s ELA test than their white counterparts, and 33 points worse in math. Hispanic students were similarly behind white ones, by 32 percentage points in ELA and 36 points in math.

Alvarez, though, cautioned that inequities in standardized tests can disproportionately impact non-white students, and that the tests themselves are not the sole measure educators use to judge the performance on their students.

“When it comes to assessments, I have to be very well aware that a lot of it can be biased, and I need to always have that lens with me and understand these numbers do not tell the true picture, the whole story of the child,” she said. “When I know I have a high percentage of children of color and I know these tests are biased, I have to take that into consideration.”

“This IAR is not the end-all for me,” Alvarez continued. “Are they prepared for high school? Are they prepared for college or career? … There’s other things we need to take into consideration. We should never rely on one type of data.”

Woman has to go, drives through crash scene

A 25-year-old Chicago woman, who ignored several police vehicles attempting to preserve the scene of a serious crash, told officers she did so, in part, because she had to use the bathroom, then proved her point by pulling down her pants and urinating on the ground at a gas station.

Forest Park police were helping the Oak Park Police Department restrict traffic on Harlem Avenue around on Dec. 4 around 4 a.m. when a 2014 Kia sedan drove around “at least five” vehicles with their lights activated, proceeded to travel into oncoming traffic and ignored an attempt to pull her over.

When the vehicle finally stopped, at the Thorntons gas station at 601 Harlem Ave., five women began to exit the car before an officer ordered them to remain in the vehicle. The driver then “immediately began to scream loudly” and said she would not remain in the vehicle because she had to use the bathroom. When informed that she drove through the scene of a major accident, the woman allegedly said she “did not care” and did not see the vehicles with their lights activated.

At that point, the officer asked to see the woman’s driver’s license, to which she again began yelling and threatened to relieve herself outside the car. According to the police report, the woman then swung open the

driver’s door, pulled down her pants and underwear, and urinated on the ground in front of the officer.

The woman was issued several citations, including for disorderly conduct, public urination, indecent conduct, obstructing a police officer and several traffic violations.

Ex-employee allegedly trashes cemetery, chapel A disgruntled former employee of Concordia Cemetery was accused by his former employer of shattering a chapel window and disturbing items at a handful of gravesites last week.

The rampage was reported on Dec. 1 around 10:45 a.m. and allegedly involved a former employee who had reportedly already trespassed on the property a week earlier. Staff at the cemetery believed that employee returned because they “threatened employees that [they] would be back for revenge for being fired,” according to a police report.

Whoever did the damage at the cemetery on Dec. 1 allegedly used a “large rock” to break out a window of the chapel and stuck their arm inside, throwing brochures and pamphlets on the ground. The vandal also “threw several items from different

gravesites on the ground and smashed them” and threw something at a passing vehicle.

The former employee is also suspected of being the perpetrator because one of the gravesites that was allegedly damaged was a spot that he and another employee had previously argued about. The argument apparently involved a cross at the gravesite, and part of the Dec. 1 incident included someone pulling that cross out of the ground.

Man peeved when woman turns down ride A woman was called a “b---h” after she declined a man’s offer to drive her and her 13-year-old daughter to school on the morning of Nov. 29.

The woman was on her way to a school in River Forest just after 8 a.m. when an “older” man in a gray sedan pulled up next to them on Desplaines Avenue. The man, whom she described as balding with “fuzz” around the sides of his head and a round face, asked if they needed a ride to school.

When the woman said no, he allegedly responded by insulting her and driving off, heading northbound on Desplaines.

The man could not be immediately located by police.

These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Forest Park Police Department, Nov. 29-Dec. 5, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded.

Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

Application portal opens for new round of rental assistance Nearly $300 million from federal government now available to Illinois renters facing pandemic hardships

SPRINGFIELD — The application portal is now open for another $297 million of rental assistance for Illinoisans who lost income due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Illinois Rental Payment Program, or ILRPP, money comes from the federal American Rescue Plan Act signed into law

by President Joe Biden in March. It will be administered by the Illinois Housing Development Authority.

The application portal is available at illinoishousinghelp.org. To be eligible, a tenant must have an unpaid rent balance on a rental property which is their primary residence. They must have experienced a financial hardship due to the pandemic, have a household income below 80 percent of the Area Median Income and must be an Illinois resident.

Proof of citizenship is not required, and assistance is available for renters of stateor federally-subsidized housing.

The portal for the latest round of funding will be open until 11:59 p.m. on Jan. 9. IHDA said it expects that 32,500 households will receive assistance through this round of fund-

ing. Approved applicants will receive onetime grants of up to $25,000, paid directly to their landlords on their behalf, and IHDA said it would begin releasing funding by the end of the year.

The launch date was pushed back one month from the initial November date announced by Gov. JB Pritzker so that the portal could undergo additional testing. A spokesperson for IHDA said the portal had already received more than 3,000 applications as of Dec. 6 and the department no longer had any concerns about its ability to handle the load after working through technical issues over the past month.

Rent owed from June 2020 through April 2022 is eligible for repayment, with renters able to receive up to 15 months of back rent and three months of future rent. If a landlord chooses not to participate in the program, tenants may be able to receive payments directly, according to IHDA. A renter may still apply if they have previously received federal rental assistance, but they cannot cumulatively receive more than 18 months of assistance. IHDA said it would adjust grant amounts for those who have already received partial assistance.

IHDA said it would prioritize households

earning less than 50 percent of the area median income and those that have one or more members who have been unemployed for at least 90 days.

The latest round of federal rental assistance is the third distributed by the state.

More than 62,400 applications were approved and $571 million paid out to renters throughout the state in the previous round.

According to IHDA, about 55 percent of approved applications were from households where a member had been unemployed for more than 90 days, and the program provided an average of $9,152 per household.

More than $800 million has been distributed by the state for rental assistance since 2020, helping 108,500 Illinoisans with back rent. According to the latest report from the U.S. Treasury outlining distribution of the previous rounds of rental funding, Illinois had distributed over 90 percent of funds received thus far.

“The initial round of the Illinois Rental Payment Program highlighted the continued need for assistance as we continue our recovery from this terrible pandemic,” IHDA Executive Director Kristin Faust said in a statement. “As we reopen this vital assistance program to help Illinois families,

seniors and the most vulnerable, Gov. Pritzker is continuing to work with (the U.S.) Treasury and our elected officials to advocate for additional funding to ensure no one is forced from their home as a result of COVID-19.”

The Illinois Department of Human Services also has rental assistance available, and assistance is also available through a court-based program. IDHS also provides utility and legal assistance, which can be accessed at illinoisrentalassistance.org.

The state is also preparing to launch a Homeowner Assistance Fund program to distribute federal resources for mortgage assistance in the spring. Information on that program is also available at illinoishousinghelp.org, where those seeking mortgage assistance can sign up for a mailing list for program updates when they are available.

COVID cases climbing quickly in Forest Park Skyrocketing numbers include 155% increase in cases in last two weeks, positivity rate above 5 percent

The number of new COVID-19 cases detected in Forest Park is accelerating at an alarming rate, with a 155% increase in new cases in the village over the past 14 days, according to data compiled by the Cook County Department of Public Health (CCDPH).

Every available metric tells a similar story in Forest Park, where infections are rising, and the rate of positive tests is ticking closer to unsafe territory. The village’s rolling infection rate exceeded the countywide average on Dec. 4 for the first time since late August, and three times in the most recent four-day span before the Review went to

Dec. 7, the CCDPH reports a 5.4% positivity rate in the last week and an average of 189 new cases per 100,000 people, also within the “high transmission” range.

There are no COVID-19 restrictions in place in Forest Park apart from the ones set by the state, including an indoor mask mandate. The CCDPH has likewise instituted no specific rules related to COVID-19.

A total of 1,621 Forest Parkers have contracted COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, an increase of 62 cases since Nov. 29, and 31 residents have died as a result of the virus.

Leaf pickup extended to Dec. 16 Late-season rakers have a little more time to shift their fallen leaves from their yard to the curb after the village announced it would extend its free leaf collection service through Dec. 16.

The Forest Park Public Works Department had initially planned to stop collecting leaves on Dec. 1, but “due to the late start to the season this year,” the service was extended, according to an electronic newsletter distributed by the village.

Leaves should be raked into the street gutters and will be collected based on the village’s regular street sweeping schedule, which can be found online at forestpark.net. Residents are asked to rake the leaves curbside one day before they are scheduled to be collected.

Mayor’s toy drive, Dec. 10 Forest Parkers are invited to bring a new, unwrapped toy or a gift card to the Howard Mohr Community Center on Friday, Dec. 10 from 6 to 9 p.m. as part of the Mayor Hoskins Toy Drive promoted by the village.

According to a promotional flyer, “Every year the village of Forest Park strives to help by giving food and toys to families that are less fortunate.” The community center at 7640 Jackson Blvd. is owned and operated by the village.

A Thanksgiving dinner distribution to those in need was held at the center last month.

Registration open for senior New Year’s Eve party The Howard Mohr Community Center, 7640 Jackson Blvd., is hosing a seniorsonly New Year’s Eve party and tickets to the event are on sale now.

Senior citizens are invited to enjoy an “elegant meal” along with raffles, dancing, a champagne toast and party poppers at “pretend midnight,” which is 3 p.m. The party begins at 11 a.m.

Tickets are $50 for Forest Park residents and $55 for nonresidents. The center is offering door-to-door bus service to the event for $1, but only by appointment, and only for Forest Park’s senior citizen and disabled residents.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) puts any positivity rate between 5 and 7.99 percent in the “moderate transmission” category, the first time Forest Park has reached that range in weeks if not months. As recently as late October, Forest Park’s positivity rate was just 0.62 percent, according to zip-code specific data compiled

by Northwestern Medicine.

The total number of cases, meanwhile, represents even worse news, per the CDC. Forest Park is recording an average of 153 new cases per 100,000 people, according to the CCDPH, a number that puts the village well within the CDC’s definition of a “high transmission” area. That bar is just 100 new cases per 100,000 on a seven-day rolling average. Northwestern’s numbers also show that the village is averaging more than seven new cases per day as of Dec. 5, around seven times as many as in late October.

The increase in prevalence in Forest Park is mostly in line with the countywide numbers compiled by the CCDPH, which includes most of suburban Cook County. As of

In the most recent data provided by the district, 22 students tested positive for the virus during the week of Nov. 28 to Dec. 4, more than twice as many as in any other week this year. There had been only 19 total cases among district students from Aug. 22 to Nov. 6. Since then, 42 new cases have been confirmed.

The delta variant remains the most common strain of COVID-19 currently circulating in Cook County, according to health officials, with 99.4% of cases in the last two weeks caused by that variant. The newly discovered omicron variant had not yet appeared in Illinois as of Dec. 7.

The one encouraging data point in Forest Park, however, remains the village’s strong vaccination rate, with 79.6% of residents having received at least one vaccine dose as of Dec. 6, and 61.3% immunized with a “complete vaccine series,” according to the CCDPH. Those numbers are well ahead of the county numbers, which are 74.6% and 57.8%, respectively.

It is unclear how many people gave money to the person or people behind Dankwoods Dispensary, and how many just showed up at Carole’s hoping to shop, but it is evident that Dankwoods Dispensary was never a legitimate business and, to be certain, never had a retail shop in Forest Park. Its website, dankwoods.shop, was still online as of Dec. 7, but its alleged physical locations have been hopping around the country, everywhere from Milwaukee to Washington D.C., presumably as would-be customers catch on to the grift.

A visit to dankwoods.shop shows some clumsy Search Engine Optimization-focused word clusters and less-than-expert graphic design but otherwise offers a wide range of products, a helpful-looking, customer-support chat box, and a churn of popops declaring purchases from customers around the country.

On the bottom of the page, Dankwoods advertises no addresses for their alleged physical locations but claims to be based in Chicago and San Francisco, the latter likely not by accident. A reverse-image search reveals that the brightly lit shop with smiling customers and ample product is, in fact, a picture of the inside of a San Francisco weed shop, Urbana, and there is an apparently upstanding online dispensary that offers delivery service called Dankwoods, operating out of California.

(At the top of the legitimate Dankwoods website, dankwoods.org, is an ominous warning in small gray text that reads “Beware of fake Dankwoods websites claiming to be us!”).

The illegitimate Dankwoods, the one claiming to operate in Forest Park, also claimed to sell its product online. But the means by which sales were completed were the kinds of things that could have, or maybe should have, raised red flags.

According to a police report filed Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 25, by a Philadelphia-area man who claimed to be a victim of the Dankwoods scam, potential customers were asked to make initial contact with the company via WhatsApp, a Facebook-owned messaging app that’s most popular outside the United States. After conversing with the company on WhatsApp and placing an order, the man said he sent more than $400 via a mobile payment platform and was told to pick up his order at, of course, 7307 Roosevelt Road.

Then he showed up at Carole’s Next Best Thing.

Sorice said customers showed up so frequently looking for Dankwoods — as often as 2-3 times a day — that it became a running joke among his staff and regulars, one that he says became less funny when he had to inform people that he both would not be

handing over their purchase and would not be refunding their money.

Sorice called the experience “exasperating,” and it grew even more so when he started trying to get the page removed from Google. Remarkably, Sorice said, the same fraudulent company operating under the same name and using the same phone number ran the same scam about a year ago. He complained to Google enough at that time that the listing came down. When Dankwoods popped up again in November, he started down the same path.

“I reported it to anyone I could think of to do it,” Sorice said. “All Google had to do was take down a listing. Every time someone

Dankwoods’ now-vanished listing included dozens of glowing reviews dotted with the occasional one-star warning, including one from Sorice, who warned that Dankwoods was not what it appeared to be and reported the company.

Google said it has disabled the user who created the fake Dankwoods account, but a search of the company’s phone number shows three dispensaries, the lazily named Best Dispensary in Washington D.C. and

that battle should be waged, it’s unclear as well. Detective Lt. Pete Morrissette had the Nov. 25 report land on his desk and immediately suspected the scammers were, at the very least, not from Forest Park. And most likely, he thought, not even from this country. So any criminal case would likely extend far beyond the Forest Park Police Department, but the dollar amounts being scammed — $500 on the high end but likely significantly less in most cases — are probably well below the threshold of what would ignite a investigation by an agency like the FBI. Still, Morrissette wanted Dankwoods out

comes in, I tell them, can you take the time to [flag] this as fraudulent? They did take it down and then the same dispensary at the same location running the same scam pops back up. I don’t know …”

A Google spokesperson said the company “looked into this case and took immediate action to remove policy-violating content and disable the user account associated with the [business].”

HOLIDAY WALK Big crowds turn out from page 1 o’clock when two motorcycle police officers with sirens blaring escorted a Forest Park Fire Department fire engine chauffeuring Santa (aka Joe Byrnes) to the tree.

The kids chanted “Santa, Santa” right before Mayor Rory Hoskins started the countdown — 10, 9, 8 … and when the crowd shouted “Zero!” Santa flipped the switch and 10,000 white lights twinkled on the tree as the crowd cheered.

Santa moved over to the parking lot between the bank and Pastries by Kay to sign autographs, pose for pictures and listen to what tots want for Christmas, without making any promises.

The Chamber of Commerce hosted the event and their goal, of course, was to promote the many small businesses in town.

Evidence that their goal was achieved was caffe De Lucca and Jimmy’s Place packed with diners. An employee of Twisted Cookie said she handed out 1,000 cookies to kids and their parents as they walked the street.

People strolling the sidewalks licked cones from the Brown Cow and sipped to-go coffees from Kribi and Starbucks. Pastries

by Kay enjoyed steady business and Todd & Holland Tea Merchants welcomed curious folks checking out their large selection of tea.

Most at the walk didn’t buy anything, but that wasn’t the goal. They had to walk slowly because of the crowds and found themselves peering into storefront windows checking out the businesses inside, some of which they hadn’t noticed before.

What did happen last Friday evening was much more than a business promotion.

Not only did the fire department chauffeur Santa to the tree lighting, but two library staff members dressed up as Ghostbusters and one dressed as Shelly the Turtle, the library’s mascot, which the little kids loved.

Businesses got into the holiday spirit.

Storm troopers interacted with passersby outside the Brown Insurance Agency; Pippins, dressed in medieval costumes, sang madrigals inside Centuries & Sleuths Bookstore; the fire department gave out glow necklaces; a pop-up group sang “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” at the corner of Madison and Circle and s’mores were handed out by the park district.

The clip-clop sound of horses’ hooves, as they pulled two wagons filled with about a dozen people each, added a touch of nostalgia to the scene.

Nadeau set up a Christmas tree, flanked by two seats, all sculpted from ice, on the grass in front of Todd & Holland. Strollers took advantage of the novelty for many photo opportunities.

Everyone, except a few 2-year-olds being 2-year-olds, seemed to be in a good mood.

Police officers, assisting crowds as they crossed streets, greeted many people by name. For three hours you couldn’t tell lib-

erals from conservatives. Black, white and brown faces, greetings in Spanish, old folks in wheelchairs and using walkers competed for sidewalk space with the crowd.

Hoskins and his family had to stop every 10 feet to respond to residents saying “Happy Holidays.” Some greeted him by his first name.

David Staskowski from Berwyn wore a red sweater that elicited praise from many in the crowd in Constitution Court.

Forest Parkers Ryan and Melissa posed for pictures in front of the tree with their kids, Madeline and Parker, as did Jasper and Lauren with Aria, and Lara with Toya and Toren.

Part of the happy spirit might have come from a sense of restored freedom after so

much time cooped up at home because of COVID. Only about 10% of people on the street were wearing masks.

Laurie Kokenes, executive director of the Forest Park Chamber of Commerce, said the tradition of the Holiday Walk began in the early 1980s. “The Holiday Walk,” she explained, “is a ‘goodwill’ event designed to bring folks together from the community and beyond to enjoy some holiday cheer and to showcase Madison Street and Forest Park. It’s a tradition for many, but each year brings some new faces who are discovering Forest Park for the first time.”

Festival of trees Bring the family and check out the well-decorated flora lining Triton College’s circle drive on Thursday, Dec. 9 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at this year’s Festival of Trees.

Comic book club reunion

Bird painting workshop Get step-by-step instruction on how to paint the iconic Northern Cardinal at this class hosted by the Trailside Museum of Natural History on Friday, Dec. 10 from 1 to 3:45 p.m.

Beginners and more experienced artists will get the chance create the bird with acrylic paints on a 9-inch by 12-inch canvas. The event is open to those age 15 and older at a cost of $5 per person. All materials are provided.

The Forest Park Public Library’s Dog Man & Friends Book Club is set to gather for the first time in a long time at the library on Monday, Dec. 13 from 4 to 5 p.m.

This high-energy class featuring the most danceworthy holiday jams is only for kids between 6 and 14 years old, and costs $10 per resident or $15 for nonresidents. The Park District of Forest Park is sponsoring the class.

There’s no better time to drink hot chocolate than on a cold winter evening, although cocoa on an unseasonably mild night still hits the spot.

The support and the community she needed

ngie came to BUILD as a sophomore in high school in 2019, one year after her family arrived from Venezuela as political asylees. Despite major language and financial barriers, Angie had big plans for her future, and BUILD was the support and the community she needed. With BUILD she took field trips to college campuses, organized events, mastered English, recruited her friends, and volunteered in pandemic to distribute food and resources in her own Hermosa neighborhood.

At the same time, Angie’s BUILD mentor Gabi helped her navigate the unfamiliar American educational system - lining up coursework, college applications, and financial aid to support her dream of being an engineer. With guidance and tireless work, Angie graduated with top grades, and this fall, she is a freshman at University of Wisconsin-Madison’s College of Engineering.

Angie still stays connected with Gabi, who helps her navigate this new challenging phase. Gabi also keeps in touch with Angie’s family at home, helping them adapt to their daughter being away. Too many firstgeneration college students are pulled back

home by pressure to help their struggling families, so Gabi and BUILD are there to support the parents to make sure Angie can stay in school.

■ Due to a severe shortage of crèches, demonstrators forced to wait until March to protest public Nativity scenes.

■ Retailers changing their names to reflect shortage of inventory. For example, Dress Barn is now known as Dress Shed.

■ Labor shortages hit the North Pole, as elves who worked remotely last year, refuse to return to Santa’s Workshop.

Testing’s failures

W

e’ve never been fans of standardized tests for school kids as a way to measure the success of a student, a teacher, a school, a school system. In Illinois the perpetual rejiggering of the standardized tests effectively makes comparables across years impossible.

There is most certainly racial bias/insensitivity built into the tests. And we don’t put credence in the argument, “It’s a snapshot of a moment worth capturing.”

Heaven knows the moment captured in the COVIDinduced remote learning environment of last spring is going to be aberration piled on aberration.

So on the list of concerns we have about the needed turnaround in the District 91 Forest Park Elementary Schools, poring over standardized test scores doesn’t rank high.

We’re more interested in the various other testing strategies the district has come to employ in recent years. Not that those numbers have been particularly encouraging, but their focus on ongoing testing across a school year, testing that measures a single student’s progress against their own past efforts is, to us, testing that is actionable by a classroom teacher, a school principal, a family.

That said, the puny numbers posted across the district in last spring’s standardized testing are, we hope, a floor from which the new administration can gradually rise.

Holiday Walk returns

A lot of mixed feelings as we watched families gather along Madison Street, Friday evening, for the return of the fabulous Chamber of Commerce Holiday Walk. Yes, crowds were smaller than past years when the street was packed store window to curb with genuinely delighted folks. But it was still a crowd in a moment when the delta variant of COVID is actively pushing up transmission of the virus.

That said, among our mixed feelings was tempered joy.

After last year’s holiday event was rightly and fully cancelled due to COVID, it was wonderful to see the masked faces of our kids strolling the main street of their hometown. Wonderful, too, to see our persevering independent merchants, restaurants and bars put on a show for their customers and potential customers.

OK, and after years of wearing giant papier-mache heads of fictional characters in the window of Grand Appliance, it was a happy circumstance that the Review’s leading Forest Parker, Jill Wagner, invented an ingenious “printing press” for the display. It was full-tilt Review on a very Forest Park evening.

Let’s keep plugging on pushing up vaccination numbers so we can beat this crafty and debilitating pandemic into submission during 2022.

Making the case for a Saturday Thanksgiving

W

e broke with tradition on Thanksgiving this year in two ways, both good.

First of all, I finally gave in and deepfried the turkey. This was a tremendous production, which is something I always enjoy. The opportunity to cook in an interesting new way does not often present itself at this point in my life, and that is double-especially true when the new way is interesting by virtue of being absurdly dangerous instead of interesting because it is a weird and expensive molecular-gastronomy kind of thing.

Taking rips off a bong filled with sage and thyme while eating turkey that’s been reformatted into the appearance and flavor profile of a green-chile cheeseburger is fine for the Alinea set, but I’d like to see one of those people lower a turkey into a pot of boiling peanut oil and then nervously watch over it for an hour.

We first watched the Good Eats episode on deep frying a turkey in which Alton Brown memorably transforms a turkey-frying setup into something you’d need Red Adair to extinguish. Armed with this sensible parable on fire safety, we bought the recommended rig, 5 gallons of peanut oil, and a 15-pound turkey. In accordance with proper safety protocols, I diligently dried the bird out for 24 hours before remembering that I was supposed to have gauged how much oil I needed to fry the bird using water displacement, which meant my diligently dry-brined turkey had to be dipped in cold water before I could cook it. Is there a moreignored recommendation on Earth than “Read instructions completely before beginning”?

While the oil heated over the roaring blue flame, I calmly catalogued all the imaginable tragedies. My favorite disaster-prevention measure was the handwritten sign covering the doorknob on the back door reading “THE DOG CAN-

NOT GO OUT THIS DOOR UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE”. It felt very official.

The oil hit 250 degrees on the way up to a high of 350. It was time to lower the bird into the bath. There was a great deal of stressful bubbling, but the oil didn’t foam or rise. Boiling oil bubbles and roils but doesn’t put off steam the way boiling water would, so the effect is rather like watching a turkey in a Jacuzzi. Fifty fidgety-nervous minutes later, we gratefully killed the flame and hoisted the turkey out.

Stress notwithstanding, I may never cook a turkey another way. The skin was magnificent.

We should have just slipped it off the bird like a topcoat and served it as a first course. Generally I am not a big fan of turkey, and this won’t push it up into my top 10 animal proteins or anything, but next Thanksgiving I will probably look forward to the bird for once.

Thanksgiving will be observed on Saturday next year, by the way. We’ve done it on Friday before, to accommodate family obligations, but this year we pushed it all the way to Saturday, which was glorious. A vast improvement on the usual Thursday-first layout that turns a four-day weekend into a three-day weekend spent cleaning the kitchen.

On Thursday we went to the dog park, watched movies, and made pizza. On Friday we went to the very empty grocery store and the very empty Carnivore and did all our shopping, made cornbread for stuffing, made stock for gravy, and had a very chill prep day. On Saturday, thanks to Friday’s prep, we executed the meal early enough that we got rolling on the leftovers that evening, then had the best open-face, hot turkey sandwich of my life on Sunday.

On a four-day weekend, you want to frontload the downtime. That’s my advice, and next year you will be thankful for it.

Cabling and wiring, including CAT5/6, fiber network, telephone, serial communication, termination, and punch-down.

Chamber Gift Card Program Benefits Local Consumers SHOP L OCAL O and Businesses PRF

his holiday season, support local businesses by purchasing a Shop Local OPRF Gift Card from the Oak Park River Forest Chamber of Commerce. Currently, these gift cards can be used at 48 participating merchants in Oak Park and River Forest, and new vendors are continually being added to the vendor list.

Chamber members envisioned the gift card program in July 2020 to spur community business growth during the COVID-19 pandemic. Later that year, the Chamber launched the Shop Local OPRF Gift Card Program in collaboration with Yiftee, a company that facilitates community e-gift cards programs. This year, the Chamber has sold almost $10,000 in gift cards.

“We’re really just trying to help local spending,” said Jenny Yang, facilitator of Shop Local OPRF. “The program real-

mly helps out the merchants and the community. It helps give many benefits thatt are as easy and turnkey as possible.”

The gift cards are digital and can be spent either in stores or online.

Additionally, they do not expire and can be purchased year-round on the Chamber’s website. Many of the merchants in the Shop Local OPRF network are restaurants or retail establishments, but Yang emphasized n that any vendor with a POS system can participate regardless of industry. cal In addition to providing value for local cal consumers and vendors, Shop Local OPRF also benefits businesses looking to give back to the community. For example, Byline Bank in Oak Park recently purchased a total of $15,000 in gift cards from Shop Local OPRF, Downtown Oak Park, and several local retail stores and restaurants. Stepping back in time at Russell’s Barbecue A ‘tradition that goes on and on’

ussell’s Barbecue, 1621 N. Thatcher Ave, Elmwood Park, has been a family tradition since 1930.

The meat-focused mainstay originally found its home on North Avenue before moving to the expansive space built to house the rustic restaurant in the mid-1940’s. Ben Tapia, longtime manager of Russell’s Barbecue, started as a busboy at Russell’s when he was just 15 years old. He had to get a special permit to work under-age, and now 30 years later knows the business from top to bottom and keeps the kitschy restaurant

running smoothly.

“Russell’s really was a hangout for people in the 1940s and 50s,” said Tapia. “There was nothing around here at all so this became a destination for families and couples. They would spend time in the restaurant and on the lawn. Russell’s was especially popular after a visit to Kiddieland.”

Russell’s menu has expanded over the years, but the original dishes are still among the most popular selections today.

The limited early offerings included nothing more than simple hamburgers, beef and pork sandwiches, ribs and chicken.

The original Russell’s menu didn’t contain any smoked meats; 14-hour smoked brisket and pulled pork menu items were added in 2011. Tapia said Russell’s was established before wood smoked barbecue and aquarium smokers made their way onto Chicagoland restaurant menus. Russell’s smokeless barbecue allows the sauce to standout in their throwback dishes.

Today the original meat sandwiches, slab ribs and bone-in chicken continue to be slow roasted and served just as they were in 1930.

The tender and simply seasoned meats are all designed to be doused with Russell’s barbecue sauce. Of course, the signature sauce,

To cope with the pandemic Russell’s installed a drive-thru in the back of the restaurant. made on-site for use in dishes served in the restaurant, has remained the same over the decades and still contains the Jamaican spices and bold cinnamon notes that keep customers coming back to Russell’s yearafter-year.

“We tried to modernize once and people got upset,” laughed Tapia. “I try my best to keep everything the same, but people like the nostalgia and want to continue enjoying the same dishes. A consistent recipe has been key for us.”

The big facility is part museum with large black and white photos and framed newspaper articles cluing diners into the rich history behind the restaurant. Loyal customers are resistant to changes to the property as they want their memories kept intact. During the pandemic, however, regular custom-

ers applauded the addition of a drive-thru to the property. The make-shift solution features a standalone “heater box” manned by a masked employee. Orders placed through the drive thru lane account for nearly 30% of all Russell’s sales.

“We knew we needed to do something fast, and we didn’t have thousands of dollars to spend,” said Tapia. “The drive-thru was a huge help and we would not have made it through the pandemic without it.”

While Russell’s has a “more modern” location in Countryside, Tapia is proud that Russell’s was born in Elmwood Park. The charming barbecue joint is a local landmark of sorts and a place where wistful folks can step back in time and savor a timeless memory.

“Many of our older customers come back here because they went on dates here and now, they bring their grandchildren to eat here,” said Tapia proudly. “The Russell’s tradition that goes on and on.”
