When Bonwit caught a signature, her lips curved into a wide smile. Dressed in a purple down jacket and wearing black gloves, she has braved the cold almost daily to collect signatures calling for a new stop sign at the intersection Jackson Boulevard and Hannah Avenue. In 10 days, Bonwit said she’s compiled nearly 100 names on her petition, with concerned parents and community members alike scribbling signatures. Bonwit has heard the excuses from Garfield, located at 543 Hannah Ave. Administrators say the school has no say in instituting new traffic controls. Getting in the spirit Things were looking a lot like Christmas – even before Thanksgiving – at the Park District of Forest Park’s Candy Cane Lane Craft Fair and Holiday Market in the park district’s administration building on Nov. 18. Advice for Thanksgiving archaeologists

ust returned from the annual “dig” at my kitchen archeology site. As usual, I found an array of ancient artifacts. Many of them were in good condition, thanks to cold conditions in the refrigerator and freezer. I also broke new ground in biology – who knew that grapes could turn into raisins after a few short months in the fruit compartment? As a trained scientist, my job is to catalog each item but the sheer volume staggered me. In the refrigerator alone, I found four boxes of baking soda. They might have been purchased during a primitive stage in human development, when people still baked from scratch. Or they may have served as deodorizers. Either way, I removed two quality specimens for museum display. Next, I stumbled on a sea of salsa. I examined jar after jar and found that salsa doesn’t go bad – it just gets spicier. Sadly, the same cannot be said for jars of spaghetti sauce. I

don’t know why people purchased such enormous jars of sauce and used only half. Which led to a second question: How can sauce from a jar be any good in the first place? Digging further into the refrigerator, revealed the presence of three containers of fancy mustard. This indicated a sophisticated diet. Upon closer examination, I determined these mustards had only been used once for recipes and that the inhabitants were still squeezing yellow mustard. As for the rest of my refrigerator findings, they were overwhelming: 27 eggs; countless Ranch dressings; and enough barbecue sauce to slather a side of beef. I couldn’t wait to publish my findings. But first I had to dig in the cabinets. After working in cold and freezing temperatures, the warmth of the cabinets was a relief. I again found many examples of the same specimens. might explain the jars of chili and cans of French-cut green beans, but four boxes of taco shells seemed excessive.

might explain the jars of chili and cans of French-cut green beans, but four boxes of taco shells seemed excessive. It was the food items I didn’t see that also piqued my scientific interest. No macaroni and cheese – was their diet this advanced? No cinnamon covered graham crackers – one of civilization’s great comfort foods? And, sure, there were Cheetos - but who could eat them in their petrified state? The oldest items I discovered had expiration dates that were B.C. Before cellphones. Even older were packets of soy sauce from Lee Choi, the long-defunct Forest Park restaurant. If I can preserve them long enough, they could become priceless, like vases from the Ming Dynasty. In the spirit of the holiday season, I found many small containers of nutmeg and cinnamon. It appeared that we forgot we had them and bought them year after year for seasonal recipes. If you want the advice of a certified kitchen archeologist: Before you lug in more food for the holidays – dig, people, dig! ■ John Rice is a columnist/private detective, who has seen his business and family thrive in Forest Park. Proviso East varsity football coach let go DeWan White Sr., hired in 2016, went winless through two seasons By MICHAEL ROMAIN Staff Reporter

Proviso East High School administrators recently decided not to renew the contract of head varsity football coach DeWan White Sr., according to Proviso Township High Schools District 209 officials. In a statement put out on Nov. 15, Cynthia Moreno, the district’s spokesperson, stated that “Proviso East will be hiring a new football coach and will ensure that the program is headed in a competitive direction.” During an interview that day, White said that he had problems with a performance evaluation of his coaching job conducted by Brian Colbert, Proviso East’s assistant principal and athletic director. “I don’t believe the evaluation was fair,” White said. “They don’t give coaches a chance. In my opinion, Coach David Odom [White’s predecessor] should never have been fired. How can you expect a coach to change a culture if you’re switching every two years?” District officials are prohibited from discussing personnel matters.

DeWan White Sr. White was hired as an at-will employee in July 2016, replacing former head varsity football coach David Odom, who had been in the position since 2014. White went winless over two seasons. “We didn’t win any games my first and second year, but we scored 26 points my first year and this year we scored 80 points,” White said.

The Sullivan connection to the restaurant goes back more than 80 years By JOHN RICE Contributing Reporter

It’s not unusual for locals to develop an attachment to a Forest Park restaurant. But the connection between the family of Chuck and Maureen Sullivan and the Golden Steer Steakhouse is truly remarkable. The Sullivans consider the eatery at 7635 Roosevelt Road their ancestral home, serving as a site for family reunions, 40th wedding anniversary parties and more. Golden Steer’s owner and staff treat the Sullivans like family. But, really, the couple stumbled on their relationship with the restaurant quite by accident. The Sullivans’ saga begins centuries ago, when a family by the name of Hopkins immigrated to Ireland from England to operate a series of successful pubs. The busiest was owned by Sullivan’s great-grandfather, Thomas Hopkins, on the west coast of Ireland. It served as a site for “Irish wakes,” where families would gather to host a big party for those departing for America and other distant lands. Families knew they wouldn’t see these loved ones again. So in typical Irish fashion, family members threw them a memorable sendoff.

Returning to Ireland In 2005, Forest Park’s Sullivans ventured to Ireland to find the old bar where all this merriment took place. They first travelled to southwest Cork, Hopkins’ hometown. When Chuck Sullivan arrived, he was disappoint-

ed that he felt nothing for the city his ancestors had abandoned. A helpful innkeeper later informed him, “The Irish didn’t leave from Cork, they left from Cobh.” Cobh is a busy southern port where ships departed for Australia, America and Canada. Formerly known as Queenstown, Cobh is where the Titanic and the Lusitania made their last port of call. The Sullivans found themselves standing on the very pier where the White Star steamers had docked. Chuck’s emotions swelled. “This was home,” he realized. Chuck Sullivan’s great-grandfather had left Cobh in the late 19th Century. Thomas Hopkins boarded a ship, crossed the Atlantic and settled in the Irish-American town of southern Maple Grove, Illinois. He named the second of his nine children Abraham Lincoln Hopkins, in honor of the 16th president. Abe Hopkins later started a business on Madison Street, in Maywood. The Sullivan clan never knew he also owned businesses in Forest Park.

Forest Park’s firefighters want to talk to your kids about fire Three fire investigators now certified to provide at-risk, troubled kids counseling By NONA TEPPER Staff Reporter

Three Forest Park firefighters recently completed youth fire intervention training, and are now available all hours of the day to counsel troubled or curious kids about the risks of playing with fire. Lead fire investigator Mark Maylath and investigators Phil Damato and Miguel Casanova went through the 16-hour training through the Illinois State Fire Marshal, completing the program Nov. 15. They’re the first local firefighters to receive the training in at least 10 years. “Obviously the awareness is what we need to make it known in our community,” Maylath said. “If a kid sets a fire and [a parent] just lets it go unnoticed thinking, ‘It was just a kid being a kid,’ down the road it can lead to something worse.” Investigators intervene about 72-hours after a fire started by a child has been reported by police, paramedics or another firefighter. Officials will try and determine the child’s reason for starting the fire, and then link them with an outside program to provide support. Support services could include getting the kid involved in a park district program for free or at a reduced price, offering them time with the fire department’s social worker or pairing them with a Big Brother or Big Sister, said Fire Chief Bob McDermott. The fire department is still working to make partnerships with service organizations. But McDermott encouraged anyone who knows a child who has an unhealthy relation-

With an inventory of unique boutique items, the store is the perfect place to find a one-of-a-kind gift for that special someone or to treat yourself to a holiday surprise. Shop owner RoseMary Gange says that after twenty seven years, she still loves what she does. “We started in 1990 in Oak Park and moved to Forest Park in 2009. One of the things I have always loved about having a store is the constant connection with customers. I love the people who shop here, and I also like the idea of finding new things and keeping the store fresh.” With a mix of clothing, jewelry, accessories and home items, Gange says she aims to keep her inventory full of things that people know they can rely on, as well as something new for people to discover each time they come in. “It’s

always fun to see new, young designers of jewelry, scarves and dresses. People get so excited about the new lines and how things are changing.” This year, Camille et Famille has new dresses and tops from Smash, a line from Barcelona. Gange is also excited about a new line of coats from Janska. Camille et Famille has carried jewelry designed by Patricia Locke for twenty five years, and Gange says that the line is always being updated, so she holds trunk shows twice a year to introduce new products to her customers. Many of the specialty offerings are made in the USA, including clothing lines from Fenini, Staples, and Bobeau and jewelry lines from Patricia Locke, Slyca and Rook & Crow. For the holidays, Camille et Famille has a new line of decorative items, and the

perennial favorite candles in such scents at Frasier Fir make great hostess gifts. With items as varied as Raku pottery and bejeweled earbuds, there really is something for everyone on your list. While Small Business Saturday is always a great day for local shopping, Gange says she and her staff make it a mission to offer great service every day. They love to work with clients on personalized shopping, whether it’s finding that perfect mother of the groom ensemble or pulling aside different looks for a customer to try during a scheduled visit to the store. She credits her staff with being the support for great customer service. “I could do none of this without having an absolutely wonderful staff. They really are great with people and want to help people.” Look for Black Friday specials at Camille et Famille the day after Thanksgiving, and stop by on Small Business Saturday to experience what supporting a local business is all about. Building owner says he will rebuild the three-flat By ROBERT J. LIFKA Contributing Reporter

An early morning fire, Oct. 14, left a three-unit apartment building at 1124 Marengo Ave. uninhabitable and displaced two families, but no injuries or fatalities were reported. Fire Chief Bob McDermott said the fire apparently started in the top floor apartment around 1:30 a.m. When fire

crews arrived, flames were showing in all windows on the top floor, he added. Forest Park firefighters were assisted by firefighters from North Riverside, Oak Park, and River Forest, which are Forest Park’s usual mutual aid respondents, as well as firefighters from Berwyn, Cicero and Maywood. All I want is my 3-year-old and her friends to get safely across the street.”

School response Initially, Bonwit said the request for the sign wasn’t even her own. In early September, she said, Garfield parents reached out to her as the preschool representative on the district’s Citizens Advisory Council parent interest group, asking her to bring up the matter at the next council meeting. Bonwit did. She said council members told her the request for a stop sign at Jackson and Hannah had a long history at Garfield. Parents had brought it to the village. The school had complained to the village. In response, the village put up warning signs, made Hannah a one-way street and widened the curbs so buses could more easily travel down Jackson Boulevard, said Tim Gillian, village administrator. Gillian said he’s even assigned a uniformed police officer most mornings to Garfield, who can help with traffic control measures. “The placement of stop signs in the village is not controlled by the school district and is solely a village decision,” said D91 Supt. Louis Cavallo in an email to the Forest Park Review.

“I trust that the village makes those decisions based on all available information. I have no comment beyond this.” Bonwit said she told Garfield parents about the measures already in place by the village. But the group wanted more: Parents called for a new stop sign, or at least a blinking light or better signage to make the intersection safer for Garfield’s growing number of preschoolers. Jason Fustar, 37, said he lives near Garfield, and his 2-year-old daughter Fiona will soon be enrolled there. “As of right now, I’m a guy on the outside looking in because I have not dealt with the administration myself,” Fustar said. “Everything I’m seeing or hearing is through the grapevine. Obviously, people are feeling brushed off. That doesn’t make me feel very excited” to enroll Fiona at Garfield. Fustar added his name to Bonwit’s petition. Bonwit decided to take her request to the school board. At the Nov. 9 meeting, a board member suggested Bonwit bring her case to the village’s Traffic & Safety Commission, which had an upcoming meeting scheduled for Nov. 16, she said. The board member also recommended Bonwit start a petition.

Village response The new advice inspired Bonwit. That night, she Googled a template for a simple petition. She wanted to be ready to collect signatures the next day. On Nov. 10, she arrived at Garfield, dropped off her 3-year-old daughter Evangeline and started taking names. Bonwit also posted on Facebook about the petition on Nov. 13, writing, “I started a petition to get a stop sign installed on Jackson at Hannah in front of Garfield Elementary School. A number of preschool parents brought it up as a major concern. Hope to be at that corner with [the] petition the next three days. Please stop by and say hi and add your name to the petition.” She noted that she would be taking her petition to the

village’s Traffic & Safety Commission and “the more signatures and the more parents to show up at the meeting, the better!” Sally Cody, Forest Park’s executive secretary, replied to the post saying the village’s Traffic & Safety Commission meeting had been cancelled that month. Mayor Anthony Calderone then commented on the Facebook post, telling Bonwit she was going through the wrong commission and needed to write a letter to the Forest Park Village Council first. “I have no desire to derail your initiative because I think it warrants further review, but we do have processes in place,” Calderone wrote. But Calderone’s explanation of how Forest Park government works differs from what’s written on the village website, which says the Traffic & Safety Commission first reviews requests and then sends them to the Village Council. Calderone said no change has recently been made in the village’s decision-making process. Gillian said he hadn’t seen the language on the village website, and that it might just be a mistake. He said he expects Bonwit’s request will be up for review on the upcoming Village Council agenda on Nov. 27. But “why not call somebody who can fix it for her?” Gillian said. “I’m not sure that you or any of the other 60 or 70 people she’s spoken to have any ability to get her on the Traffic & Safety Commission. If she called village hall, that’s my frustration, I can fix that.” Bonwit said she had no idea she could directly submit requests to the village council. She said she feels like the village is upset she posted about the issue on Facebook but that it’s hard to know the right process when even the village website doesn’t offer correct information. Still, “I am confident something will be done. I’m hopeful that will happen,” Bonwit said. The parents are engaged and want something to happen, and I would imagine that the mayor would also want the best interest of the youngest kids in our community — to feel safe going to school.”

After asking to take a test drive, a man stole his own car from H&R Auto, 805 S. Hannah Ave., on Nov. 14. About 5:40 p.m., the man came into the shop and asked to take his car for a test drive, according to the police report. H&R had been working on the Pontiac’s suspension. An H&R representative told the man he could take a drive as long as a shop employee came with him. The man drove to 800 Marengo Ave., exited the car, and began talking to the driver of a nearby vehicle. Not knowing what was happening, the H&R employee also exited the Pontiac. Once the employee was out of the car, the owner jumped back in and drove away toward Harlem Avenue. The Pontiac was later located on the 4700 block of Gladys Avenue. H&R towed the car back to the shop. The owner now owes nearly $1,400 for services rendered, including the additional towing fee.

Lock cut on landscaping trailer at McAdam McAdam Landscaping was burglarized again, with about $1,050 in equipment stolen. Someone cut the padlock of a landscaping trailer at 2001 Desplaines Ave., and stole a leaf blower estimated at $400; a tree trimmer worth about $400; and a hedge trimmer valued at $250, according to a police report. The burglary occurred sometime between closing time Saturday afternoon and about 6:20 a.m. Monday, Nov. 13. A similar burglary occurred at McAdam in October.

Rental left running, car stolen A rental car was stolen as a man paid for fuel at Thornton’s gas station, 601 Harlem Ave., on Nov. 12. A man left his Dodge Charger running as he paid for gas inside about 2:30 a.m., according to the police report. While inside, he witnessed a man, approximately 6 feet tall, slender, age about 20, get in the car and drive away. A representative from Hertz Rental Agency tracked the car to the area of Jackson Boulevard and Hamlin Street in Chicago. The Chicago Police Department said they would check the area. Meanwhile, the vehicle has been reported as missing.

Driving recklessly, drunk Three men were arrested for driving drunk and recklessly, while carrying cannabis, on Nov. 11. A police officer spotted the Chevrolet Equinox heading west on Jackson Boulevard about 5:40 p.m., according to the police report. The Chevrolet turned at the intersection of Jackson Boulevard and Adams Street. An officer pulled behind the car and turned his emergency lights on. The offending driver turned east onto the 7600

block of Monroe and pulled over. The officer exited his car, and approached the Chevrolet, which contained a driver and three passengers. The officer said he smelled alcohol and cannabis inside the car. The driver said, “I don’t have a license.” The officer then asked the driver if he had a state ID. The driver said he did, but instead of searching for it, he quickly drove away. Police later spotted the Chevrolet traveling east on Harrison Street at Circle Avenue. The car crossed Harlem Avenue into Oak Park. It then crashed into several cars at Garfield Street and Euclid Avenue in Oak Park. The driver and passengers fled the vehicle on foot. After a short chase, officers caught the passengers. The driver is still missing. One passenger told police the driver of the vehicle, who is his cousin, had drunk three large cups of tequila before driving. The passenger was cited for possession of cannabis, since he had a burnt joint in his pocket and a clear plastic baggy that contained a green, leaf-like substance in his shoe. The front-seat passenger was arrested for open alcohol, since an open bottle of tequila was found in the front seat. The other back-seat passenger was charged with resist, obstruction and disarming an officer. His court date is Dec. 12 at 10 a.m.

CAR THEFT

Record year for theft, carjackings from page 1 cars taken through threat or use of physical force—is four, also more than any year in recent history. The above are just a few examples of recent incidents, according to police reports. “Every day I come in there’s a car theft,” said police chief Thomas Aftanas, who said it seems like most of Forest Park’s carjackings and thefts have occurred in the past month. Increased incidents of car thefts and jackings started in Chicago and bled locally, said Tim Gillian, village administrator. Forest Park’s proximity to the expressway makes it an easy target for thieves, he said. Most incidents occur on or near Harlem Avenue, at Thorntons at 601 Harlem Ave.; Refiner’s Pride at 7323 Randolph St.; Harlem Randolph Car Wash at 161 Harlem Ave.; and Premier Car Wash at 901 Harlem Ave. This is not a reason to avoid the area, Gillian said; just be wary. “In 30 seconds they are on the Eisenhower headed east or westbound,” he said. “It’s tough to chase them once they’re on the highway.” Police only chase offenders in incidents that involve carjackings. Thefts are too risky. Aftanas said most thieves don’t stop when they see officers flashing lights, and many are young, age 14, 15 or 16. “They don’t have a valid driver’s license and they can’t drive,” Aftanas said. “And so

as of Nov. 16

Avoiding car theft Here are some tips to avoid getting your car stolen and staying safe during a carjacking, according to the village of Forest Park: ■■Understand your surroundings. Know who you are, and know who’s around you. ■■Shut down your car completely. Thieves can still steal a vehicle if you leave your car running but take your key fob — they just can’t shut the car off or restart it. ■■If you have a gun pointed at you, give up your keys. Don’t try and fight back, your car’s not worth it. if they’re doing 90-plus, someone’s going to get killed.” Last week, Forest Park, Oak Park, Chicago and River Forest police arrested at least five people allegedly connected to local car thefts or jackings. Most of those arrested have Chicago addresses, Aftanas said. They typically don’t talk about their reason for stealing cars. But officials have heard rumors: It’s a gang initiation; offenders are thrill-seeking; they need the cars to go somewhere else, or commit another crime; or, they just steal them because it’s easy. Whatever the reason, “we’re all concerned because they have real guns on them,” Aftanas said. “Whether they intend to or not, you can accidentally shoot someone. The more times you commit a crime, the more chance an accidental shooting’s going to happen. They pick the wrong victim who’s going to arm themselves, and that could lead to a gun fight.”

OUT ABOUT A SPECTACULAR NIGHT FOR AN AMAZING FUTURE 2017 West Cook YMCA Gala Raises Funds for Scholarships

Additionally, the Y honored 2017 Scott Gaalaas Awardees, Scott Yen, MD, and Cathy Yen, a dynamic couple who are having a profound impact on our community. Scott is the Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency at West Suburban Medical Center, and Cathy is the Executive Director of the Oak Park-River Forest Chamber of Commerce. The Y is honored to have them both as part of their community, and to partner with them as we guide our neighbors on a journey to wellness.

On Saturday, November 18, 2017, the West Cook YMCA’s Annual Gala kicked off their 115-year history celebration – and their future! Community leaders, Y members, service providers and our neighbors came together to Rediscover their Y and get a glimpse into the ongoing legacy of the West Cook YMCA. “Us,” the new short film from YMCA of the USA was featured at the Gala, as well. This is part of the Y’s nationwide campaign, “For a better us,” and focuses on our shared commitment to uniting, supporting, and celebrating “Us.” The Gala is all about raising funds for the Annual Support Campaign – and this past Saturday was a great success. More than $120,000 was given and will be used to provide scholarships for Power Scholars Academy Summer Learning Loss Program, Family Memberships, Childhood Obesity program- Healthy Weight and Your Child, and other programs for those who want to be part of the Y but need financial assistance.

The Symphony of Oak Park & River Forest

The River Forest Library Foundation “A library outranks any other one thing a community can do to benefit its people,” said Andrew Carnegie. That’s why he funded thousands of public libraries a century ago to help people help themselves through self-directed learning. Today, the River Forest Public Library (RFPL) carries on that core mission by providing not just books and periodicals but also a wide array of digital resources (onsite and remotely), interactive programs, and other transformative learning opportunities. Honor a family member, a cherished teacher or mentor, a dear friend, or your own love of lifelong learning by giving to the RFPL Foundation, a 501(c) (3) organization, at 735 Lathrop Avenue, River Forest, IL 60305 or rfplfoundation. org/donate. Supporting and enriching the lives of older adults

As a nonprofit since 1920, Cantata’s mission has always been to help older adults live their best lives. Thanks to the generous support of volunteers, families, staff, and countless donors, Cantata has been able to grow and carry on its vision for nearly 100 years. At Cantata, every season is a season of giving. Year round, people give of their time, talents, donations, and compassion. One dedicated volunteer gives to Cantata because she “is making a difference in the lives of the residents.” Others give to Cantata because they want to make a lasting impact in the lives of older adults, or to strengthen the bonds of community, or simply for personal reasons. Whether it’s the gift of your time or a monetary donation, everything is greatly appreciated and contributes to the successful care and support for aging adults. OPRF Scholarship Foundation: Honoring the past while helping to fund the future In 2015, Thomas Amato, along with his daughter Rebecca, established the Georg Ann Zussman-Amato Memorial Scholarship for Women in Science through the Oak Park and River Forest High School Scholarship Foundation. The scholarship was created to honor the memory of Mr. Amato’s wife, Georg Ann, who had passed away in 2011 at the age of 72. The award is offered to a graduating female student at OPRFHS who has demonstrated excellence, and is planning to major in one of the natural sciences at college. “Georg Ann had an early interest in sciences.” Mr. Amato says, “I felt this was a good way to keep her memory alive and honor her work in the field and her own personal desire to be involved in science.”

A stop sign request

S

eems like there might be a need for an additional stop sign on Jackson at Hannah — over by Garfield School. A group of parents is passing a petition calling for more traffic control in a spot where kids, some of them preschool-aged, are being dropped off for school. Seems like a sincere effort and a reasonable request for consideration. The parents were reportedly getting ready to petition the village government’s Safety and Traffic Commission for a hearing. That seems logical, too. What follows is something of a muddle, in a way that social media sometimes adds to more than it clarifies. Sally Cody, a staffer at village hall, jumped onto the Facebook thread and reported the Safety and Traffic Commission had just cancelled its November meeting. Later Mayor Anthony Calderone joined in and told the earnest group that the commission only accepts topics to review after the mayor and village council give them direction to take up a topic. The school district made a bland comment to our reporter about its role, or lack thereof, in matters outside of its buildings. Even, it seems, on so vital a matter of whether their young charges arrive safely. Many of the parents seemed miffed by this bureaucratic hoop-jumping in so small a town. Time for a meeting. Time to get off social media and around a table. The mayor, the school board president, the school superintendent, the village administrator, the parents. Listen to some personal worries of parents. Explain processes of how matters get referred to commissions and possible timelines. Raise flags, if any, about the proximity of four-way stops along Jackson and its possible impact on traf traffic flow. Demonstrate that, while village government and the school district are separate bodies with distinct roles, they share concerns about kids and value working together. It has happened before. In 2013, traffic control measures around Garfield School were changed substantially at the urging of parents and with a collaborative effort by officials. That explains the one-way traffic on Hannah during school hours. Yes, things can move faster due to social media. That’s OK. But the instinct to listen and respond ought to be the same.

Watch your car

Police Chief Tom Aftanas and Village Administrator Tim Gillian are right. Auto thefts and carjackings are a plague and the disease is spreading right now into suburban communities, including Forest Park, Oak Park and River Forest. Most concerning are the carjackings. Four have been reported so far in 2017 in the village, the most in memory. Most of these incidents happen in auto service businesses along Harlem because, as Gillian points out, the escape route to the Eisenhower is almost immediate. Time to get the antennae up. Never leave your car running. Not for a minute. Not to get coffee from the gas station. Not while you are washing the windows. Opportunistic thieves are watching. This is not a Forest Park problem. But it is a problem happening in Forest Park. Be watchful.

OPINION

E

Thankfulness is an inside out thing

very time we have communion at my church, the pastor says something like, “In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread and gave thanks.” I couldn’t pull that off. I mean, how can you feel thankful when you know that in a few hours you’ll be arrested on trumped up charges, and all of your so-called friends will abandon you? Then the next day you’ll be tortured and executed, because the religious leaders feel threatened, and the political leader in the area doesn’t have the courage to do what he knows is right. Or, to put it more succinctly, how do you feel thankful when you are angry? I ask that, because it seems that a lot of us have anger stewing right below the surface. If you don’t think that is true, look at the mental list you are making of the subjects you vow you won’t bring up at Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow at your inlaws’ house, because you just know they will trigger a nasty exchange. Everyone seems to feel like they are getting the shaft. Jesus told a parable about people who feel like they are getting shafted. According to the story a farmer hires day laborers early in the morning and agrees to pay them $60 for working in his vineyard all day. Then he hires more at 10 a.m., more at 2p.m. and even more just an hour before quitting time. When the day ends he gives $60 to the ones who worked only an hour and the same amount to those who started later in the day. But, the ones who worked all day felt they should be paid more. Instead, when they got $60 like the rest, they protested that the farmer wasn’t being fair. In one way, I can sympathize with the feeling of being short changed. “Equal pay for equal work,” we say. But have you noticed that life often doesn’t work that way? And so, when we see others prospering while we are struggling, we get pissed off. You know how it goes. If your salary goes up to $40,000 a year and the person at the desk next you is getting $30,000 you feel blessed or lucky. It’s easy to feel thankful. But if you get a raise to $40,000 and the person next to you earns $50,000, you won’t get sleep for a night or two. Your insides are churning. So, if we accept the reality that life isn’t fair, how then do we give thanks tomorrow from the heart? I went to Amazon.com to see if they had any self-help books on feeling thankful. I found Thankfulness: A Gratitude Attitude!; The Power of Being Thankful; 365 Devotions for Discovering the Strength of Gratitude. . . . I stopped counting at 35 titles and I was only half way

through the list. Apparently there’s a market for gratitude, just like there is for losing weight or reversing male hair loss. But I have a suspicion that while those self-help books might be OK, they don’t get at the root of why many of us will not feel authentically grateful tomorrow. While I don’t have an easy, five-step program to transform your “Why Me’s” into heartfelt gratitude, I know stuffing myself with great food and then watching football with a beer in my hand will be an enjoyable break from the unfairness of life. But it really doesn’t change the fact that the next day I’ll hear the alarm go off, grudgingly get out from under the covers and be stuck with the same old familiar irritability that was there the day before Thanksgiving. So, I might go out on Black Friday and avoid facing what’s really going on by shopping till I drop. Nothing wrong with that. I know the local merchants will appreciate my business. But anger and lack of thankfulness are like oil spills. They don’t evaporate like water. The door to gratitude doesn’t lie outside us but on the inside. Not on our circumstances but on our orientation. Profound gratitude doesn’t depend on how many blessings we get, on “how fair” life is, but on how we view life and lean into it. Five years ago, a man named Kevin Kling was interviewed on a public radio show. He was born with a birth defect—his left arm is disabled and shorter than his right arm. And then in a motorcycle accident his right arm became permanently paralyzed. See if his story about the three phases of prayer rings true to you. The first “phase,” he said, was to get things. Referring to a monkey he wanted badly when he was a kid, he recalled, “Around Christmas time, I’d pray to God to ask Jesus to tell Santa to get me that monkey.” He shifted into the second phase of prayer he used when he was in college, which helped him out of trouble. “You know, I’m in over my head here. Save me.” What he called the third phase happened after his motorcycle accident. “I just remember thinking, ‘Thank you, thank you, thank you’ that I lived,” he said. “And that my prayers shifted to thanks.” He added: “I couldn’t tell whether, after that, good things were happening because I was saying thank you or that I was just noticing them. But there are blessings in my curses, even today. I mean, every day.” Thanksgiving makes it easy to be grateful, with its delicious food and promise of discounted shopping the next day. But the real challenge is living like Kling, and learning to say thanks daily.

Roosevelt Road construction is finally over Businesses on Roosevelt Road are pleased to announce that construction has finally ended. There are only a few orange cones left standing and the long-awaited day has come. According to the mayor the last final touches are being put into effect within the next week. Lights, landscaping, and new signs, of course, are almost all in place. The town’s efforts to improve the road have hopefully paid off and all business owners are hoping to return back to normal sales. More than six months later, we encourage everyone in the local community to drive through and see how nice the project

has helped beautify the community. The holiday season is right around the corner. Stop in for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Andrea’s Restaurant is located at 7427 Roosevelt Road in Forest Park and open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., offering specials every day and open for the holidays. Check out our menu online, “Serving the community since 1981.” We’re glad the project turned out so well. Hope to start seeing all our guests dining with us soon.

ment above the pub. A dumbwaiter, or small freight elevator, would bring up food from the kitchen. Margaret worked in that kitchen, while Charles tended bar. Abe Hopkins continued to operate the bar until shortly before his death in 1945.

garet Sullivan, to join him. As soon as Sullivan’s parents entered Golden Steer they acted strangely. “My mom got up and walked into the bar and then the kitchen. My dad did the same thing,” Chuck said. Charles and Margaret had never told their children that they used to work at the Forest Park establishment. In fact, Charles, the part-time bartender, and the owner’s daughter, Margaret, were married there in April 1939.

Family ties

An oral history project for vets Even in a close-knit community like Forest Park, there is an awful lot we don’t know about our neighbors — we often don’t know all the struggles they’ve faced, the sacrifices they’ve made, or the obstacles they’ve overcome. Despite the yearly holiday dedicated to honoring them, this is particularly true of our neighbors who are veterans of the Armed Forces. Some of them served bravely during wartime — seeing and experiencing the horrors of battle firsthand. Others have led lives of quiet dedication to country here at home or abroad. We rarely get to hear their stories. The Historical Society of Forest Park has dedicated itself to making those stories more widely known and shared. To that end, the society has begun an oral history project, which seeks to record the stories of our Forest Park veterans for posterity. This ef effort is being spearheaded by Board Member Nancy Cavaretta, who is actively seeking veterans willing to be interviewed on tape, and provide us an enduring record of their service to country. The society initiated this effort on Sunday, Nov. 12 with a Veterans Day dinner, held at Shanahan’s restaurant, 7353 Madison St. Forest Park vets ate free, courtesy of Shanahan’s, and were invited to share their stories. Twenty-three people were present — including nine veterans. Each veteran was invited to share their story — and each veteran gave an account of their service. Joe Byrnes spoke movingly of his service in Vietnam, and of a friend who he thought had died in combat but who contacted him years later to renew the bonds they had forged years earlier. Other veterans gave fascinating testimony of their time in Afghanistan, Germany, and here at home. Common themes included “military families,” where a commitment to military service is passed on from parent to child; the deep friendships that develop in battle; and the lasting benefits of military training and access to education. Two of the veterans were medical doctors. Veterans attending the event included:

Joseph Byrne, Raphael Davis, Patricia Salazar-Davis, Joseph Johnston, Cliff Leber, Debra Funderwhite, Chaplain Chandeep Singh Kabra, and Lt. Col. Dr. Neil Meccia, and Dr. Paul Roach. The Historical Society plans to make the Veterans Day Dinner a yearly event, and extends its gratitude to all Forest Park veterans — both those who attended this year and those who, it is hoped, will attend future events. It is also grateful to Shanahan’s for providing a space, and their picking up the tab for our veterans. If you are a veteran and would like to share your story, please contact the Historical Society at forestparkhistory1975@gmail. com. If you would like to support these ef efforts, you may become a member and/or leave a donation at https://www.forestparkhistory.org.

Abe Hopkins had opened this Irish West Side Bar in 1934. He wanted to replicate the success of his father by comforting mourners in the tradition of Irish wakes. Except these would be real wakes. “He started the pub to serve mourners from the nearby cemeteries, like Queen of Heaven and Mount Carmel,” Chuck explained. Hopkins would serve them food. Mourners would drink and tell stories to celebrate the departed. Like his father, Abe Hopkins had nine children. The family lived in an apart-

Remembering history Chuck Sullivan, the family historian, was thrilled by the discovery of his family’s ties to Golden Steer. He couldn’t wait to share it with his cousins. On May 2, 2015, Sullivan family members traveled from across the country to the Golden Steer. Like Chuck, they were overcome by emotion. Women were crying, as Sullivan gave a powerpoint presentation about the family’s history. Golden Steer owner and chef Charlie Tzouras, also watched the presentation. Tzouras proved a gracious host. He gave the family a tour of the restaurant and picked up the check for their reunion. Sullivan said it was gratifying to see that the dumbwaiter was still in working order. The Golden Steer became their “special place,” so it was natural they would celebrate their anniversary there. On that day, Sullivan brought an edible basket to the restaurant for Chef Charlie and his staff. “I thanked him for keeping my grandfather’s dream alive,” said Sullivan, “We consider his place home.”
