At Charlie’s Restaurant, 7427 Roosevelt Rd., indoor dining is going on as usual, despite Governor J. B. Pritzker’s orders to halt all indoor restaurant and bar service in suburban Cook County beginning Oct. 28.

Maria Philippou, restaurant manager and daughter of owner Charlie Philippou, made it clear on social media soon after the Oct. 26 announcement of the restrictions that Charlie’s Restaurant would be staying open.

“We are remaining open and standing up for our rights and freedoms,” the restaurant announced on its Facebook page. The message goes on to say, “We have been able to serve our guests for 40 years and we are beyond grateful for their support.”

Mentioning a construction project on Roosevelt Road that temporarily shut their business, a fire that closed their doors for 13 months, and the initial COVID-19 restrictions, Charlie’s said, “We will not survive another shut down.”

The Facebook announcement was met with mixed responses. Some people congratulated the restaurant on its decision to remain open. But others said See CLOSINGS on page 8

Getting to the point about good writing

’m taking this opportunity to teach a remote writing class. First of all, what’s the hardest thing about writing? Finding topics?

Yes, it’s better to write about something we care about. But what’s the most difficult thing?

No one? It’s getting started. Why is starting so hard? Because we have a voice inside our head that says our writing is bad.

That our sentences are stupid.

You know how you have a really great idea but as soon as you start writing it down, it doesn’t come close to what you were thinking. So the first step to writing is to turn off that voice that tells us our writing is bad.

To make our writing better we have to think of writing as music. Now what are the two elements of music? What’s that?

Yes, music has a beat or rhythm. So how do we create rhythm with our writing? Nobody? Who said punctuation? Well, you’re on the right track. We create rhythm by varying the length of our sentences. If all of our sentences are the same length, it’s boring. What we need are long sentences, short sentences and medium sentences. We don’t want run-on sentences that have “and, and, and.” We break those down into shorter sentences. Two- or three-word sentences

can be very effective.

Now what’s the other element of music? What’s that — the notes? Right, the other element of music is melody. How do we create melody with our writing?

We create melody with alliteration. We repeat consonant sounds like, “the tops of the tall trees.” Or, we can repeat vowel sounds, “How now, brown cow?”

So when we’re choosing which word to use, we try to use words that have similar consonant sounds, or vowel sounds to the other words in the sentence.

By varying the length of our sentences and using alliteration, we make music with our writing.

Writing is also Jenga. We build our sentences and then take out unnecessary words, so that our sentence is still standing but with no extra words. Nothing will improve our writing more than eliminating unnecessary words. This includes phrases like, “I started to, I was thinking of, I was going to.” These are word-wasters. Just get to the point. Don’t start to climb the mountain. Just climb.

Our assignment for next week is to write a five-paragraph sentence about ourselves.

The format for the essay is called SHAPE.

S is for special gifts we have. Maybe we’re good listeners, or we’re loyal, or we have the gift of hospitality. H is for hobbies and passions. A is for abilities. Are we savvy with computers? Are we good at basketball?

P is for personality. Are we shy introverts, or are we outgoing extroverts? Finally, E is for experiences. What experiences helped us grow as a person? So write a paragraph for each of these character traits.

The hardest part will be connecting our paragraphs. We need transitions that lead from one paragraph to the next. Coming up with transitions is difficult. If we have to, we can always use, “Speaking of” or a transition like that. Email your SHAPE essay to me by next week. Don’t send them at the last minute. I don’t want to correct a tsunami of essays right before our next class.

Speaking of which, did you all get your haikus back? I don’t usually take points off of poems but some of you didn’t have the correct number of syllables. I realize this isn’t math class but remember: three lines, seventeen syllables, 5-7-5. OK, I’ll see you all next week.

Resilience with a capital ‘R’ Local artist keeps bouncing back

In a community looking for models of resilience, Heather Kadlec would be near the top of the list.

The Forest Park resident had been a beloved teacher in Brookfield until, at the age of 41, she suffered a stroke in 2011, leaving her unable to speak more than a few words and not able to use her right hand.

She went through the normal stages of grieving the loss of something precious, and as she began to look toward her future, she learned to paint with her left, non-dominant hand. What began as therapy led to the discovery that she was really good — good enough to sell her watercolors in galleries and art shows.

When the virus closed the galleries and prevented art shows from being staged, she looked out the window of her Madison Street condo, saw that lots of people wearing face masks, and she and her husband, Jonathan Shack, came up with the idea of putting some of her art on face coverings.

Which evolved into a business called HMK Living, which launched a year ago this month. Under that organizational umbrella, her paintings sell in a line called HMK Watercolors, and her face masks are displayed on the HMK Living website under HMK Fashions.

Creativity and resilience have gone hand in hand in getting HMK Living through its first year. For example, the art on Kadlec’s

face masks comes from her paintings and one of her favorite images is the Chicago skyline.

Face coverings are the best-selling item in the HMK Living catalogue, but they are just a few of the roughly 100 items for sale.

If you go to her website, HMK Living, find “shop” and then “fashion collections,” you will discover in the Skyline Collection her artistic impression of the Chicago skyline on face masks but also on matching headbands, beanies, tank tops, toiletry bags, pencil cases, tote bags, boyshorts and leggings.

You’ll even find a pair of men’s boxer briefs with not only the skyline printed on the front but also the iconic image of the big red Chicago Cubs sign outside of Wrigley Field, 1060 W. Addison.

Consumers will also see lines with names like Agua, Floral, Psychedelic Spray, and Ducks.

“Heather has always loved wearing unique fashions that reflect her personality,” her husband explained, “so it was a natural progression to want to create her own fashion line that incorporates her artistic flair for color and design.”

It’s one thing to be an inspired, creative artist; it’s another thing to make money selling your art. That’s where Shack proved invaluable. He used his experience as a construction contractor to provide advice regarding finances, management, marketing and sales.

Kadlec has also brought into the HMK advisory and management team experienced marketing and design associates, along with a retired garment manufacturing head, to help run the day-to-day.

Fashions are already in their second generation. “We made changes to improve fit and comfort,” she said, “based on updated CDC guidelines and customer input.”

HMK’s current operations involve using pattern software to create Kadlec’s designs and speed up the process, and a manufacturer in North America to produce the product.

“It was common,” added Spiegel, “for manufacturers in general to have delays in the early months of the pandemic, as ours

did. But we are fortunate to have the process back on schedule. Due to increased demand ahead of the holidays, we anticipate production and shipping to take longer, so we’re suggesting customers order early.”

Veteran teachers feel like beginners again Intermediate teachers weigh in on distance learning

“This is my 25th year, but I feel like it’s my first year all over again because there are so many new things to learn and navigate to make this work and for it to be rigorous and worthwhile,” said Susan Bogdan, fifthgrade teacher at Field Stevenson School in Forest Park’s District 91.

Bogdan, along with third-grade teacher Kelly Randazzo and fourth-grade special education teacher Seccoyah Dale, talked with the Review about how their year has been going.

The consensus? Better now.

“At the beginning of the year,” Randazzo said, “it was super-challenging to find inventive ways to do the same thing I’ve been doing for 20 years.” Like Bogdan, she’s been teaching for a long time, but teaching remotely full-time was, in some ways, like starting all over again.

“Now that I’ve gotten into a groove, it’s going a lot better,” Randazzo said. The students are familiar with the routines and the websites they need to access. They’re comfortable with the programs they need to use.

The key, said Bogdan, is communication.

“I think, here at Field, we’re super-communicators,” she said. And that’s important to keep everyone on the same page: teachers, students, parents.

As a fifth-grade teacher, Bogdan already knows a lot of the kids who come into her class since third- and fourth-graders are also taught at Field Stevenson during a typical school year. And the kids already know each other.

But Randazzo’s third-graders come from Betsy Ross, and they’re not familiar with the school, perhaps less of a challenge since

learning is remote. But they’re also not familiar with her, and creating bonds remotely isn’t as easy as doing so in person.

“I think the hardest thing for me is forming close relationships with [the students],” Randazzo said. “That was a lot easier to do in person. I am getting to know them now, but in person it was more natural, as an extension of the classroom, to just keep chatting because you had an extra couple of minutes.”

Dale, who is new to the district this year, expressed the same sentiment.

“I do miss being in the room with the children and having that connection with them,” she said. “It is tough to kind of go into the career this way, but I’m just dealing with it. It’s not forever.”

And despite challenges, all three teachers have found positives in so completely changing the way they’re teaching.

Bodgan, who admitted she’s “always been skittish to try new technology,” has learned to embrace it. She said she’s become familiar with a lot of new programs, including some she plans to incorporate into her classroom even when learning is back in-person, although she’s also more mindful about how much screen time kids are facing these days.

Nicole Williams, who comes from Poughkeepsie City School District, appointed to $175K deputy superintendent of transformation role

During a regular board meeting on Oct. 13, the Proviso Township High Schools District 209 school board approved the hiring of Dr. Nicole Williams, as the new deputy superintendent for transformation — a position created under new Supt. James Henderson.

Williams’s position comes with a salary of $175,000.

Williams comes to D209 from the Poughkeepsie City School District, where she served for five years as superintendent. Before that, Williams was senior deputy superintendent for

academic services for two years. Prior to that, she was superintendent in the New York City Department of Education.

Rodney Alexander, the D209 school board president, said that Williams started work on Oct. 19, and will be responsible for assisting Henderson “with the day-to-day functions” of the district.

“But this isn’t just about getting somebody, this is about raising these test scores, dealing with teacher contracts and unions, and everything else we’re doing,” Alexander said. “It doesn’t matter that we have new buildings, if our kids are struggling in the classroom.

That’s what she’s here for.”

Alexander said Williams’s hiring is part of a larger central office restructuring by Henderson.

“We can only hold him accountable, if we give him what he needs,” Alexander said, adding that Williams’s hiring is “cost neutral,” with the costs of her position offset by the elimination of other administrative positions, such as the chief innovation officer position once held by former Proviso Math and Science principal Bessie Karvelas.

Henderson reassigned Karvelas to building principal at Proviso West earlier this year.

Residents have until Nov. 13 to respond to a District 91-sponsored survey looking for input on the search for a new superintendent for the elementary school district.

The survey, designed by the search firm School Exec Connect with input from the district, is seeking the opinions of D91 stakeholders in the search for a replacement for Lou Cavallo, who retires at the end of the school year.

“The board of education would like your input as we begin our search for a new superintendent to lead our district,” reads the introduction page of the sur-

vey. “We will use the information we gather from focus groups, open forums, and this questionnaire to help create the profile of our next leader.”

The survey includes questions about the district’s current strengths and biggest challenges. It asks for input on what goals the new superintendent should prioritize and seeks opinions on what characteristics are important in the new district leader.

The survey clearly states that the responses are “anonymous and confidential.” All results will be posted on the district’s website in the future.

Usually around this time of year, Hermann Werner, 56, of Forest Park, is preparing to set up shop as a vendor at Christkindlmarket in Chicago, the German-style outdoor holiday market that materializes in Downtown Chicago’s Daley Plaza each year, from late November through late December.

Werner’s Sweet Castle has been a popular site at Christkindlmarket for two decades, with products like Pfeffernüsse and Stollen, perennial favorites with customers.

This year, however, due to the pandemic, German American Events, the outdoor market’s organizer and a branch of the German American Chamber of Commerce of the Midwest, has decided to forego the physical market, which it holds at various sites in Chicago and Milwaukee, and instead will host a virtual market from Nov. 1 through Dec. 31.

The cancellation prompted Werner to strike out on his own. Starting Oct. 30, he is selling his Sweet Castle products, many of which are imported directly from his native Germany, inside of a holiday pop-up store that he constructed in his warehouse at 2714 S. 9th Ave.

Werner, who lives in Forest Park, said the pop-up store will be a much larger replica of the space he typically sets up in Daley Plaza each year. The shelving will feature the products that Werner has become known for through his affiliation with Christkindlmarket, particularly his Hermann the German brand offerings like gingerbread spice candy, Bavarian fruit, popcorn and roasted nuts.

“When we found out the physical market was canceled, we asked the village if we can have temporary store holiday hours because we have so much space,” Werner said. “Hopefully, we can still have some business.”

Werner even constructed his ubiquitous wooden hut at the entrance of the warehouse, where customers will wait in socially distanced lines to get into the pop-up shop. On Wednesday afternoon, as Werner and his team were preparing the warehouse to open, the Christmas spirit had already pervaded the space.

In a sense, Werner’s Broadview pop-shop has a purpose similar to Christkindlmarket, which itself is a reproduction of the 16th-century Christkindlesmarket in Nuremberg, Germany, according to the market’s website. This year, Werner will get to reproduce the spirit of Nuremberg in Broadview.

The Sweet Castle pop-up store opened on Oct. 30 and will run through Dec. 31. The hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 10 a.m. through 9 p.m., Friday through Sunday.

Aggravated vehicular hijacking at BP station

who claimed he’d been chased by men with guns and broke into the home to hide from them.

A car was stolen at gunpoint from the BP gas station, 7204 Washington St., on Oct. 29 at 11:37 p.m. The victims reported that they were sitting in their car at a gas pump when a man wearing dark clothing and a black face mask tapped on the driver-side window. At the same time, a similarly clothed second person approached the passengerside window. The first man displayed a gun and ordered the victims out of the vehicle.

Both offenders got into the car and fled the scene.

Cars, left running, stolen A woman’s car was stolen from Thornton’s, 601 Harlem Ave., on Oct. 26 at 5:36 p.m. when she left the key fob inside the car and the vehicle running while she was outside her auto to use the air pump. A male offender entered the driver’s side of her vehicle and fled the parking lot. Her cellphone and purse, containing a wallet, were also in the car at the time.

At Citgo, 7400 Roosevelt Road, a car was stolen on Oct. 27 at 4:22 p.m. when the owner parked his vehicle at a gas pump and entered the store, leaving his vehicle running.

When he exited the store, his car was gone.

Home invaded with owner inside Police were called to the 600 block of Lathrop Avenue when a homeowner called on Nov. 1 at 12:58 a.m., saying it sounded like someone was trying to break into the basement of his home. Officers arrived and discovered that the basement cellar had an unsecured door, which was ajar. The exterior door leading into the residence’s porch had its frame and screen broken, and that door was unsecured as well.

Officers cleared the porch and entered the home, where they found the suspect hiding under an overturned couch. Drugs, suspected to be heroin, were found on the suspect,

counter told the man he needed to put on a mask to make a purchase. The assailant got mad, claiming the employee was refusing to serve him because he was Black.

The employee said his request for the customer to mask-up applied to all customers and pointed to a sign posted about the Illinois mask mandate. But the subject continued to demand the cigars and accuse the clerk of being racist.

The victim said she told the customer if he’d just put on a mask, everything would be fine. He told her to mind her own business and slapped her across the left side of her face. He then fled in a red Toyota.

Open container on Randolph A woman on the 7400 block of Randolph Street was issued a local ordinance citation for open alcohol when she was caught by police drinking a Mike’s Hard Lemonade alcoholic beverage outside a bar on Oct. 27 at 1:15 a.m.

These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Forest Park Police Department, Oct. 26-Nov. 1, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded.

Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

Scratch Restaurants find loophole to stay open Quartet of restaurants to host on-site private events for groups of 25

“I have never been more scared in my life,” said Patrick O’Brien, owner of Scratch Restaurant Group (SRG). “My hope is not to close any of my restaurants, but this feels like a funeral.”

O’Brien, owner of Scratch on Lake, District Kitchen and Tap, Scratch Kitchen, and Lathrop House, was not surprised by the second wave of mandated dining room closures but fears the lack of federal stimulus money will make this a fatal blow to an already fragile industry.

“This is the worst of the worst scenarios,” said O’Brien. “Unless people are dipping into their personal funds to survive, there is absolutely no chance this won’t be the end

Businesses hurting from page 1 they were shocked. One respondent said he had been a loyal customer for 20 years and bought take-out during the shutdown. “Unfortunately, we will no longer be customers,” he said.

On Oct. 28, Philippou appeared on ABC7 news talking about the decision to stay open and her hopes that the governor will change his mind about the extra restrictions put in place.

In the ABC7 segment, Philippou mentioned Chicago’s Mayor Lori Lightfoot pushing back against Pritzker’s mandates and her hope that other mayors would do the same. She added: “It is just a matter of survival at this point for our employees, bussers, dishwashers, cooks. They can’t survive on doing take outs.”

So what happens if a restaurant or bar refuses to shut down?

In Forest Park, there’s a three-step process in place, according to Mayor Rory Hoskins and Village Administrator Tim Gillian.

First, upon receiving a complaint of noncompliance, a village representative will stop by and to notify the business about the governor’s orders and tell them to close.

Second, if more complaints arise, the village will issue a cease and desist order, delivered by the village police or a member of the Public Health and Safety department.

Scratch Kitchen is the original restaurant and is located at 7445 Madison in Forest Park. Scratch on Lake is at 733 Lake St. in Oak Park. District Kitchen and Tap is at 220 Harrison St. in Oak Park. And just recently opened is Lathrop House at 26 Lathrop in Forest Park.

O’Brien is aware of the many restaurants that decided to stay open during this second shutdown and commends them for their decision to defy the mandate. But he has opted to utilize a loophole in the state mandate to position his SRG establishments for survival. He announced via social media: “We will be taking reservations for groups up to 25 people. We have four restaurants with seven private areas, meaning we can safely and still following CDC recommendations, take seven reservations every 90 minutes.”

Fears of losing long term customers inspired O’Brien to think creatively rather than operating in complete defiance of the state mandate. While the new coronavirus restrictions put in place last Wednes-

day banned all indoor dining in suburban Cook County restaurants, “meetings, social events, gatherings” of 25 guests or less are still allowed.

O’Brien aims to keep SRG private gatherings CDC compliant. They will not mix reservation groups and all events are limited to 90 minutes. Masks are required for all guests and staff and can only be removed while seated and eating.

“Everyone is wracking their brains on how to get through this,” said O’Brien.

“There is no stance that goes unopposed on this issue. I feel like I am being responsible.”

Reaction online has been mixed. O’Brien

admits “it isn’t fun” dealing with people who disagree with his decision but acknowledges everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Many people shared his post to help spread the word and offered words of encouragement. Several parties have made reservations giving O’Brien a glimmer of hope.

“I don’t doubt the severity or danger of this virus,” said O’Brien. “But if this isn’t a solution, I don’t believe there is one. After this I don’t know of any other ways to survive.”

To date no one has reached out to O’Brien suggesting he cannot host private events in his restaurant spaces.

Finally, if noncompliance continues to be an issue, the village will report the establishment to either the Cook County Department of Public Health or the Illinois Department of Public Health.

The intent of the village, said Gillian, is not to be punitive if it’s not necessary. Instead, the village plans to approach complying businesses one by one to ask how the town can help. This will include public works and the department of health and safety working with restaurants to come up with solutions such as a dedicated parking spot outside the establishment to make curbside service easier.

“Here in a suburb like Forest Park, we want to work with businesses to be successful,” Hoskins said. He added that he expects residents and patrons to self-enforce.

“I don’t think people are going to flock to restaurants that are openly violating the governor’s order,” Hoskins said.

When asked about the possibility of revoking the liquor licenses of business not in compliance, Hoskins and Gillian said that’s not something they’re planning to do.

“Revocation of a license is a big deal,” Hoskins said. “It has legal consequences. It involves attorneys, it’s time consuming, and it’s not something we’re really going to consider unless someone’s grossly violating rules.”

Hoskins added that the village will continue to follow advice from the state.

After Prizker’s announcement that similar restrictions will be required in Chicago beginning Oct. 30, Lightfoot spoke out on PBS News Hour, asking for the governor to reconsider the additional mitigation measures.

“I’m not sure that we’re reaching the right people with the restrictions that are going to be imposed by the state and that’s my concern,” Lightfoot said. Other metrics, said Lightfoot, should be considered in looking at the situation.

“No question we’re seeing an uptick in cases, and we’re also seeing positivity (rates) going up, but hospitalizations are not at the breaking point like we feared back in the spring, and I think that’s an important metric,” Lightfoot said. “We’ve gotta be very surgical in the way we impose these new restrictions.”

The restrictions, said Lightfoot, could be devastating to restaurants and bars.

“If the governor’s order goes into effect, it’s really effectively shutting down a significant portion of our economy at a time when those same businesses are really hanging on by a thread,” Lightfoot said. She said her office would continue to communicate with the governor’s office, “but it’s not looking good.”

After meeting with Pritzker on Oct. 28, Lightfoot said, “Obviously, we’ve been working in partnership with the state from the very beginning, and we’re going to continue to do that.”

Orland Park’s Mayor Keith Pekau an-

nounced in a video on Oct. 27 that he will not be enforcing the governor’s orders for restaurants and bars to shut down indoor dining. Among other reasons, he cited the lack of concrete data from the county or state showing that bars and restaurants have contributed to COVID-19 outbreaks.

He referenced DuPage County’s numbers, readily available on the county’s website, that break down outbreaks by setting.

From March 1 to Oct. 20, according to the data from DuPage County, sit-down dining restaurants have been responsible for five out of 235 COVID outbreaks, involving 22 cases, which is .7 percent of total confirmed cases traced to specific settings. Fast food restaurants are responsible for five outbreaks (17 cases), which is .5 percent of the total number of traceable cases. And “Other or Unknown Type” of restaurants have been responsible for three outbreaks (10 cases), representing .3 percent of total confirmed traceable cases.

In total, then, since the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak in March, restaurants have been responsible for only 1.5 percent of total confirmed, traced cases of COVID-19 in DuPage County. That’s compared to, say, long term care facilities, which are responsible for over half of the traced and confirmed cases.

Assuming Cook County’s numbers are similar, said Pekau, there isn’t evidence to mandate the governor’s closures.

But the same data from Cook County isn’t readily available on the website and hasn’t been provided to local government.

Vision-impaired baker selling sweets on Nov. 7 Suga Bakers pops up in Forest Park

“My goal is to help others conquer the kitchen with poise, patience and perseverance,” said Keelie Banks, 35, owner of Suga Bakers, talking about her new blog and her love for inspiring others.

But that statement takes on extra meaning when you learn about what Banks refers to as “a unique set of challenges.”

Seven years ago, she was diagnosed with retinal pigmentosa, a rare genetic disease that causes vision loss.

“With the help of God and my amazing support system, I remain committed to making my dreams a reality,” said Banks.

Banks started baking 13 years

ago.

“What started out as a way to make extra money during my college years turned into a fullfledged passion,” Banks said. But she’s always enjoyed creative endeavors and hobbies, like sewing, decorating and entertaining.

She lives nearby in Bellwood, so she’s familiar with Forest Park, where she frequents restaurants, including Shanahan’s and Scratch Kitchen. Creativita is another favorite: “Painting and wine have become one of my new birthday traditions,” Banks said.

In her new blog The Sweet Life, at sugabakers.com, she talks about her love of baking and shares recipes, like Ultimate Pumpkin Muffins and Pumpkin Praline Pie. Decadent desserts, including German chocolate cake, red velvet cake, and a variety of cookies will be available for sale at Suga Bakers popup at 7451 Madison St. on Nov. 7 from 1 to 6 p.m.

Residents come together to beautify village Thousands of bulbs planted in anticipation of spring

Amidst COVID-19 fatigue and fears for the future, a group of Forest Park residents are thinking ahead to spring, about beauty popping up even while the coat of winter might still cover the ground.

On Oct. 24, about two dozen residents gathered to plant 1,800 tulip bulbs and 3,300 grape hyacinth (muscari) bulbs in three corners of Thomas Avenue and Harvard Street; three corners and in the square planters next to Ed’s Way at Harvard Street and Beloit Avenue; and three corners of Beloit Avenue and Ferdinand Avenue.

According to Rob Sall, the group ended up with bulbs in about 24 of the corner planters on those three intersections.

Sall said for the previous few summers, he and his partner John Cunningham planted milkweed in several planters in town. When they saw a good deal on bulbs, inspiration hit. What if they got neighbors involved to plant bulbs and “add some life and color to the planters come spring?”

They talked to a few neighbors and posted in some local Facebook groups. The initial response was great, with residents and businesses offering to help cover the cost of the bulbs.

The contributions were so good, in fact, that Sall was able to purchase fertilizer for the soil, and there’s some money left over to buy other plants in the spring, when the tulips are done blooming, he said. He’s thinking native perennials, like coneflowers, Agastache, bee balm and cardinal flowers.

“All flowers that will bloom all summer and provide bees, butterflies and hummingbirds with tons of nectar. A sort of small natural prairie in the village,” said Sall.

end looked sunny and dry, Sall posted to Facebook groups. He also printed about 300 half page flyers and walked the streets (and their dog), taping an informational sheet on houses and mailboxes.

Before starting the project, Sall reached out to John Doss, director of public works for the village.

“They were thrilled we wanted to do this and help take care of the planters,” Sall said.

Doss talked to Village Administrator Tim Gillian and Commissioner Jessica Voogd, then coordinated the delivery of three loads of fresh dirt to help fill the planters and replace older soil that was dead or moldy.

resident Kristen Lyons, who helped coordinate and organize, determining which planters should be filled and “how to best maximize the bulbs we had for the project,” said Sall.

Residents had stepped up to help pay for the bulbs, and they stepped up again, with dozens showing up to help plant.

Sall and Cunningham moved to Forest Park in 2016. Both originally from small town Nebraska but living in the city for

many years, Forest Park felt like going “back to our roots and the small-town vibe we grew up with,” Sall said.

They’ve fallen in love with the town.

“It’s fun to actually know your neighbors and meet new friends in the area while walking the dog or to/from the train to work. This project allowed us to give back to the community a little and get others involved in doing the same.

When the planters became a community project, I think everyone took pride in them and the beauty they bring to the area.”

Sall said there’s a vibe in the village that people genuinely want to help each other, and this project was one way to bring people together to “build up and beautify this little village we call home.”

“Whether it’s this project, or the Brown Cow fundraiser that happened earlier this summer, I think the residents here want to help and be involved; they just aren’t always sure how or where or what to do.

But they genuinely care about and want to make our little corner of Chicagoland the best there is.”

Bad timing for Tap Room New bar opened days before state-imposed limits went into effect

Lance Law wore a Salvador Dali mask and Hansel a Duffman costume, straight out of The Simpsons, when the Review stopped by on Oct. 26 to talk to the new owners of Forest Park Tap Room, 7321 Madison St. Lance and Hansel Law are brothers and owners of the brand-new bar, which opened just days before the state mandated all bars and restaurants cease indoor service until improvements in COVID-19 statistics are seen.

But Oct. 24 was a great night, Lance and Hansel said of the Tap Room’s grand opening last weekend.

The brothers, young and enthusiastic, are renting the space from building owner Mark Hosty, who ran Healy’s Westside prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. He shut the bar in the early days of COVID-19 and never reopened, announcing its permanent closure on Oct. 13.

The Laws grew up on the South Side of Chicago, and they own Berwyn Tap Room at 6330 16th St., a business they started last October. Hansel lives in Oak Park and Lance in Berwyn, so when they thought about opening a second bar, they wanted it to be somewhere close.

“We already came to Forest Park a lot for dinner. It’s a great location, and it has a great vibe,” said Lance. “When we heard about the opportunity to open a bar here, we knew we wanted to do it right away.”

Having survived one 3-month COVID closure with their first bar, the brothers are

disappointed that it’s happening again, but not surprised. Their hope is that the additional restrictions placed on bars and restaurants by the state will be temporary and short-lived because they have big plans for the space.

“We’re still a sports bar,” said Lance. “But we’re expanding what that means.”

The brothers plan to cater to different crowds on different nights of the week. Karaoke on Tuesday. A college night on Thursday. Maybe a ladies’ night on Friday, which has been successful at their Berwyn location.

Overall, though, their focus is on diversity and inclusivity. They want to make Forest Park Tap Room a place for all (legal) ages and races to come together.

“We want people to feel comfortable here,” said Hansel.

“We want to break the mold, to provide something for everyone,” added Lance.

At their Berwyn location, they said, they are involved owners, who spend a lot of time on location, and they plan to do that at their Forest Park location as well.

“We’re really approachable,” said Lance, adding that customers regularly come up to him and his brother and introduce themselves. “We love to get to know our customers and have a drink with them.”

Although some people questioned whether Forest Park Tap Room should have been given a liquor license since it’s not selling food (though ordering is available from next-door’s Taco Tu), Healy’s open A1 license for a stand-alone bar was issued to the Tap Room. The issuance of an A license would have required that at least half of gross sales be from food, but the A1 has no such requirement. The board did not need to vote to increase the number of liquor licenses to make one available for Forest Park Tap Room since Healy’s going out of business left one open for the new establishment.

Jacque Shalo, who operates Kribi Coffee, wasn’t aware his shop had been nominated until Wagner and Kokenes called him with the good news. “I was elated,” Shalo said.

“We’ve worked really hard the last four years, even more intensely the last two years.” Now the pandemic makes running the shop even more challenging, but Shalo is making the necessary adjustments.

For example, he developed a special blend of coffee to welcome teachers back to Longfellow School in Oak Park. “It’s called Longfellow Bears Care and I donate some of the revenue to the PTO.” Shalo also produced a Black Lives Matter blend to celebrate that movement. From the outset, he has used his shop to promote social-impact issues.

He’s making face masks using colorful fabric he has accumulated from yearly visits to his small village in Cameroon.

“We’ve been making masks since March,” Shalo said. “We sell them for $10 apiece and donate proceeds to The Economy Shop.” He strives to make Kribi a community-minded coffee shop.

Building community also extends to his family’s coffee farm in Cameroon. “We’re working with other farms in the area to produce and sell a select blend. We are using a tribal mask from my village as our logo.”

Image is crucial to a brand and Shalo is fortunate that his son, Jeremiah, is a professional designer.

“Dad, I got this,” Jeremiah said, when Shalo launched the shop and needed a designer. Jeremiah designed the shop’s logo and menus. He focused on every detail of the shop, including the display of their merchandise.

These trappings aside, it’s the coffee that makes the shop unique. “We use a patented electric air process to roast small batches,” Shalo explained. “We roast at the point of consumption to make sure the coffee is fresh.” Kribi’s coffee could be called “farm to cup.”

They kept to their original vision for the shop but the lockdown has been hard on Kribi. Shalo gets the capital he needs from his partner, Dr. David Heinz, who lives across the street from him in Oak Park. He also has a small warehouse equipped with a roaster that sells directly to customers. Shalo anticipates that being promoted on the Illinois Made website will increase his sales.

Fake news? Not nearly

B

oth the Forest Park Review and Claudia Medina, a District 209 school board member, take a pounding this week in a letter to the editor from Rodney Alexander, president of the Proviso Township High Schools board.

Pound away, Mr. Alexander. But your efforts to concoct some sort of conspiracy between the Review and Medina are far-fetched and incorrect. Calling our reporting “fake news” puts a stain on you considering the destructive mouth who has made that phrase infamous.

You might not like the series of controversies spooling out of the district during this complex moment of COVID-19 and the overtly aggressive way that Supt. James Henderson has chosen to introduce himself to his faculty and the community.

Go ahead and say that Medina is “the voice behind the divisive rhetoric that has been drummed up in the media concerning our new superintendent.” Certainly Medina, a Forest Parker, has a clear voice. We’ve been listening to it since 2015 when she, as part of the progressive 209Together slate came to this district’s rescue. We listen to all elected officials.

But what is driving our coverage is reporting on your board’s public meetings and the stories which come out of those meetings.

– On Oct. 27 we reported on a former employee hiring an attorney after being fired. That story came out of the board’s Oct. 13 meeting. Medina’s comments during the public meeting were quoted in the article as was an official statement from the district.

– An Oct. 20 article reported on the teachers’ union filing a grievance against the district for forcing them back into the classrooms. The press release was sent directly to the Review from the media director of the Illinois Federation of Teachers. We reached out to the district for a response and printed what was provided. Medina was not consulted nor was she mentioned in this article.

– An Oct. 18 article out of the Oct. 13 board meeting reported on teachers asking not to be required to return to the classrooms. During this meeting, dozens of teacher comments were read. The Review quoted a few. The Review also quoted Henderson’s comments made during the meeting.

Medina was not mentioned.

The accusation of fake news from a school board president is serious. It means we’re lying. Twisting the truth. Making things up.

It is not fake news that the teachers’ union filed a grievance against the district, nor is it fake news that a former employee has sought legal counsel. Those things really happened. The September story we wrote about the amazing automotive program at Proviso East isn’t fake news either. That’s really happening too.

Alexander says the board “must trust the decision we made” by hiring Henderson. Perhaps. That’s between you and your fellow board members.

Media, however, isn’t in the business of trusting one group or another. Our job is to observe and report. That’s why we will be watching every step of the way, every decision made. We will report on finances and new hires and terminations. We will write stories about the amazing things going on in the district as well as the challenges facing it. We will reach out to the district and the board to inform the community about developments within D209. That’s what we do.

Searching for a little serenity

astor Walter Mitty hasn’t gotten a good night’s sleep since Justice Ginsburg died.

Part of his spiritual restlessness is rooted in his fear of what the next four years will be like if President Trump is reelected.

Another part of his inner turmoil is due to not understanding how so many millions of Americans seem to love 45.

And part of the absence of serenity in his soul comes from not knowing the outcome of the election.

“It’s just like the year the Bears won the Super Bowl,” Mitty, said the man who grew up 40 miles from Green Bay, to himself. “The Packers would be ahead at half time but I’d have this nagging dread that Payton and the Fridge and Singletary would come from behind and send all of us cheeseheads into a deep depression.”

Hearing that Biden has maintained a constant lead in the polls for months now hasn’t made the pastor of Poplar Park Community Church feel any better. That’s what they said four years ago.

And what has amplified his anxiety is the number of phone calls and emails and facebook postings he has received from church members and friends asking him for some word of hope, some assurance that everything would be OK. When he talked to Davis O’Connor, who was raking leaves around the church, the man who never seemed to get out of poverty confessed that he and his wife were anxious about how the election would turn out. The $600 they had been getting, he explained, had barely kept their heads above water and now he wasn’t sure what would happen.

When Mitty got back in the parsonage, he saw that he had received an email from Sharissa Hawkins.

“I’m OK myself,” she began, “and then continued with, “Well, no I’m not. I’m really worried, Pastor.

I mean, you know how I feel about Trump boasting that he’s done more for the Black man than any president since Lincoln.

“Well, I just heard on BEZ that 18 percent of my Black brothers, according to one poll, now approve of Trump, and it’s because of that the macho image of masculinity that Trump projects.”

That email made Pastor Walt feel even more anxious about the election, so he decided to switch to Facebook and see what local gossip was circulating.

Instead he found posts about the fear that liberals will take “all our guns away,” both sides of the abortion issue, worries about the cops not getting enough funding, law and order, and one from Michael’s rabbi.

RABBI LEVINE: How can Johnny Christian claim to be Christian when he says he is pro-life but preaches that businesses should reopen and “get back to normal” if doing so prematurely puts thousands of lives at risk?

Pastor Walt’s spirit went on an emotional roller coaster as he read each post. Feeling little relief from his anxiety, Mitty decided to take a time out from

social media for a while.

He went to the kitchen and reheated leftover slices of the pizza that had been delivered the day before.

Comfort food! Butter pecan ice cream, brandy oldfashioneds, Garret’s cheese and caramel popcorn, New Glarus Spotted Cow beer, bratwursts and onions marinated in beer.

The only trouble with that stuff, he realized, is that it only comforts your anxiety while you’re eating; an hour later you need another fix, and then the next morning when you step on the scales …

After six slices of pizza and two brandy old-fashions, Mitty decide to go to YouTube and check out exactly what the Rev. Johnny Christian had to say last Sunday.

“God has chosen Donald J. Trump,” boomed the mega-church pastor to a cheering, in-person congregation much larger than Gov. Pritzker’s guidelines allowed, “to be president of this blessed nation for four more years.”

And as if responding to the objections Mitty was thinking, Rev. Johnny explained, “Oh, I know that those antifa, socialist liberals object that President Trump isn’t always politically correct, but he is a modern day Cyrus.

“For those of you who don’t know your Bible, Cyrus was a Persian who worshipped idols, but God used even a non-believer to accomplish his will and free the people of Israel from their captivity in Babylon.”

With all that uncertainty about what would happen on Nov. 3 gnawing at his insides, Pastor Walt started to work on his sermon last Friday bearing in mind what almost everyone — left, right and in the middle — seemed to be feeling anxious about.

After a lot of false starts, he narrowed his text for preaching down to two passages.

John 14:27: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives.

Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.”

And Psalm 146: “Do not put your trust in princes, in mortal men, who cannot save. When their spirit departs, they return to the ground; on that very day their plans come to nothing.”

Saturday morning he decided that both passages were salient but had a hard time fitting them together in a harmonious way.

As often happens, as Pastor Walt was taking a break, drinking a bottle of iced frappuccino and not thinking about anything in particular, a new thought appeared. A visitor from Norway once told him: “There’s a saying in my country. There’s no such thing as bad weather; only bad clothing.”

Pastor Walt wasn’t sure if the sermon he wrote after that made sense to him or his virtual congregation the next day, but one thing did make sense to him. What our anxieties are asking us in this historical moment is, “In this terrible cultural weather, how good is your spiritual clothing?”

Let’s stay focused

W

e are living in unprecedented times. We have a tremendous opportunity, right now, to reassess our practices, revisit our goals, and put structures in place that will help us change the trajectory of Proviso District 209.

There are things that we must do. We must monitor, maintain and ensure the safety and health of our community. We must assess our teaching climate and ensure that our teachers and staff are given the support they need to be successful. We must work to build community engagement. And we must work to ensure every student in our classrooms is equipped with the tools that will lead them into the futures they envision for themselves.

When I took the oath of office to serve our students in 2017, I was laser-focused on building bridges between the community and the schools. I take my oath very seriously. As I often say, we have a shared responsibility to hold one another accountable to build strong partnerships and improve the educational experience for all students who come through our doors. Unfortunately, we have one board member — Ms. Claudia Medina —who continues to show the community that she is not capable of holding true to the oath of office she took.

Let me be clear. Ms. Medina is the voice behind the divisive rhetoric that has been drummed up in the media concerning our new superintendent. The claims that she is making — and, frankly, having others make against him — are baseless and irresponsible. We are talking about a man who has a clear record of forging formidable change within school districts. We are talking about a man who has impacted the lives of students, from all walks of life, all across this country. And we are talking about a man that we hired, unanimously, to lead this district into the next phase of success.

We must trust the decision we made. We must support the new superintendent, Dr. James L. Henderson, and trust the insight he has as an educational expert to move our students, teachers, staff, and community forward.

While we must hold him accountable, we cannot meddle in the process. That, unfortunately, is what Ms. Medina is doing. And she is out of line.

To all the parents of PTHS D209 students, and the members of the Proviso community: I want to assure you that there are six members of the board of education who are standing as one, unified in supporting the new superintendent. We are confident that he will work to ensure your student has every opportunity for academic success and a solid financial future.

We will not allow fake news, shared by Claudia Medina, in our local newspaper to tear our community apart. This is our community newspaper not a tabloid newspaper.

We will not play her game. Ms. Medina does not speak for the board. We will not appease her selfish ambitions. Your child’s future is too valuable for that. We, the other six board members, have not lost sight of the fact that we are charting the course for real, live, young adults. Their best interests are above our own.

We have made significant strides in Proviso Township over the past few years. We have a long way to go. Let’s stay focused.

As many of you know by now, I am a man who believes in the power of Biblical principle so, I will leave you with this: Ephesians 4:16 — From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.

We each have a role to play, whether as parents, teachers, janitors, security guards, secretaries, cafeteria staff, legislators, mayors, commissioners, pastors and business owners. When we walk in the role that we are purposed to walk, we will build this community in love and we will thrive.

Sr. Michelle Germanson, 76 Longtime Trinity High School president Sister Michelle Germanson, O.P., 76, died on Oct. 21, 2020. She served as president of Trinity High School from 1992 to 2018. She was a trailblazer for the school by being its catalyst for change.

A member of the Sinsinawa Dominican Sisters since January 1965, she served on Trinity’s first board of directors in 1990, which made the decision to remain a single-gender girls high school. While serving as Dean of Students at Dominican University, she was offered the position of president at Trinity in 1992.

A tireless champion for the school, she worked in partnership with the board of directors to develop a strategy and prioritize goals. She was determined to elevate academics, build spirit and engage community.

Under her leadership Trinity adopted the International Baccalaureate Program in 1994, becoming only the second school in the state of Illinois and the first Catholic high school in the state to adopt the program.

She introduced full block scheduling in 1995, focusing solely on a college preparatory curriculum.

She launched the Technology Project in 1996 and a capital campaign to build a state-of-the-art athletic facility. The Sister Michelle Germanson Athletic Facility was dedicated in 2003.

She supported the Fine Arts Program and worked with an advisory team to build a Health and Fitness Center, dedicated in 2011 and located in the athletic facility.

During her tenure, she partnered with four principals, 14 board chairs, and 27 boards.

“She was devoted to Trinity,” said current Trinity President Laura Curley. “Her efforts were dedicated to educating and empowering young women to learn and grow to be their best.”
