Cream of the crop

With the U.S. Supreme Court’s Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision striking down the legal precedent established by Roe v. Wade, states were free to implement abor tion restrictions. Since then, Illinois has seen a surge of out-of-state patients seeking abor tions, with many coming from neighboring Indiana, Missouri and Wisconsin. As some state legislatures weighed pursuing legal penalties against residents seeking out of state abor tions, there has been a push to ensure that Illinois law enforcement agencies don’t cooperate with such investigations.

‘Snow’ on Adams Street for lming of holiday commercial

Christmas came to the 7700 Block of Adams Street during the week of Sept. 1216. Despite temperatures in the 80s, there was “snow” everywhere for the shooting of a holiday commercial. The director was Ted Melfi, who wrote and directed the 2014 film, St. Vincent, starring Bill Murray, Melissa McCarthy and Naomi Watts.

Maxham said that, while the village council doesn’t usually consider resolutions on issues of national significance, this one was important.

Homes on Adams Street were decorated with Christmas and holiday accents for a Toyota commercial last week.

Voogd said since “here in the Midwest, Illinois has become sort of an oasis right now for re productive healthcare access and protection,” it was important to keep it that way.

the state to adopt something similar Illinois-wide. During the Sept. 12 meeting, the council’s two female commissioners said it was important that Illinois remains a safe haven for those seeking abor tions, saying that protecting this right is part of their duty as elected officials.

Two years after the Roe v. Wade decision, in 1975, the Illinois General Assembly passed the Illinois Abortion Law which, most notably, would have banned all abor tions unless they were necessary to save the life of a mother. It also made abor tions illegal after 12 weeks of pregnancy. The trigger law was re pealed in 2017, and, in 2019, the General Assembly codified a right to an abor tion and removed the 12-week limit.Following the Dobbs decision, several states, including Indiana and Missouri, implemented near-total bans on abor tion. The legality of abor tion in Wisconsin is currently being litigated, but it is de facto unavailable because all abor tion providers closed their doors out of fear of prosecution.

Commissioner of Public Health and Safety Maria Maxham and Commissioner of Public Property Jessica Voogd were the only elected officials to comment during the meeting.

“We were looking for a very Midwestern town,” he said, “with a variety of different kinds of houses on the block. We show the diversity of residents all getting along. The people on the block were excited.”

Marcus noted that village officials are very “film friendly” in Forest Park. Filming here is also a boon to the local econom “The cast and crew were having lunches on Madison Street,” he said. “They we also buying supplies in town.”

In a statement released July 6, Raoul’s Re publican opponent, Tom DeVore, said he would enforce existing state laws “until such time as the people through their legislature instruct me to act otherwise.”

“As your next Attorney General, my personal opinions on this, or any topic for that matter, will have no bearing on my role as the chief legal officer of the people,” he said.

The commercial was repor tedly a Toyota ad.The location manager was Dan Marcus, a Forest Park resident, who previously arranged for a beer commercial to be filmed in the village

The Forest Park resolution called on the state legislature to introduce a bill “to protect the right to and all re productive healthcare to the fullest extent possible, including prohibiting law enforcement from aiding in investigations related to seeking or performing abor tions on warrants issued by neighboring jurisdictions.”

“I took an oath of office, and I take that oath very seriously, and it demands that we stand together and protect the rights of all

Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul consistently voiced support for abor tion rights. In the wake of the Dobbs decision, he released legal guidance outlining what is allowed under state law. On July 8, Raoul issued a statement supporting legalizing abor tion at federal

‘“Notwithstandinglevel.the protections in Illinois, I support the president’s call for federal legislation reestablishing a fundamental right to abor tion nationwide,” he said. “I remain committed to enforcing existing re productive health protections in Illinois law and working with Illinois policymakers to expand protections under state law.”

“With women’s rights being eliminated in many states, it is imperative that here in our state, we keep the safe place where women have the legal right that should be their human right, but is not in a lot of places,’ she said. “And it sends the message to all the women who are listening, that we want you to retain control over your body in any Maxhamsituation.”alsosaid the right to choose affects women’s ability to get and keep jobs.

“Anytime a leader is wise, beneficent, far-seeing, that is good for us all. He was an aristocratic man but could think beyond the interests of his class. Definitely good for Thailand. A model.”

He thought Rama IX was more of a blessing than a curse.

She recalled the time huge floods ravaged the Thai countryside and the water was so deep his Land Rover was not able to get through to a remote village. He had his body guards tie a rope around him so that, when he waded through the water to get to his people, the current would not sweep him away.

The owner of Yum Thai Restaurant in Forest Park grew up seeing the face of King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX) everywhere — on paper money, banners hung from street lamps, and TV. Like Queen Elizabeth, the Thai monarch reigned for 70 years, and like the British royal, Rama IX was respected if not loved by most of his subjects.

When Pinyo sees the line of ordinary British citizens waiting to pay their respects to their late monarch stretching for five miles, she recalled how Thai people of all walks of life would kneel as the vehicle carrying his body passed through their communities.Pinyogrew up in Thailand and im migrated to the U.S. at the age of 24.

Like Elizabeth II, Rama IX had the common touch, the ability to get along with and appeal to ordinary people. For example, in

Chauwarin Tuntisak, the president of St Paul Thai Lutheran Church on Dixon Street in Forest Park, came to the U.S. back in 1978 and has a less idealized picture in his mind of the king who died six years ago.

“When I grew up in Thailand,” he said, “I was taught to respect and obey elders and author ity with no questions asked — living aboard, I see different things. I am very sure he was a good man and loved by many people and did many good things for people I, however, only saw and heard about him via newspaper andLitelevision.”vinginthis country for most of his life has changed Tuntisak’s perspective on the culture in which he grew up, but so has being part of the 1% of Thai people who are Christian. “I never had a life-changing experience with the king,” he explained, “like I have with the divine Christ.”

Doug Van Tress, 60, is a farang who, as Tuntisak’s business partner, has been to Thailand many, many times and therefore has a unique perspective on the late king.

“When he passed,” Van Tress said, “I was somewhat sad. I was definitely moved by his example of how he lived his life. I admired him. I felt he was a great leader and advocate for his people, a noble man.”

Pinyo noted that King Bhumibol was born in Boston while his father was doing graduate work there. Perhaps that exposure to Wester n (farang) culture made it difficult to bear the burden of playing the traditional role of the head of state in his homeland “I actually feel sad for him,” said Tuang jaruwinai. “He looked like he didn’t have peace in his life.”

The Forest Park outlet of Bed Bath & Beyond, 215 S. Harlem Ave., is among the 20 Illinois locations that avoided the ax in a round of store closings announced last week.According to the list published on its website, the chain plans to close 65 stores by the end of 2022. The company previously announced that it intends to close 150 “lower-producing” stores, but this list of 65 closures was the first time they identified any specifics. The impact on Illinois will be relatively modest, with three stores closing in the Chicago area suburbs and three stores closing downstate.

In Dec. 19, 2019, Bed Bath and Beyond sold the building that housed the Forest Park location to Edison FPIL001, LLC and began renting it. As the Review re ported at the time, the lease will run until Jan. 31, 2025, at which time the tenant has two options to extend the lease for an additional 60 months each. After that, Bed Bath & Beyond has an option to extend the lease for another 48 months. This was part of the company’s larger ef fort to reduce costs, which also included selling and leasing back about half of its real estate, cutting 500 positions and closing 60 stores for good.

At the same time, Bed Beth and Beyond also announced several initiatives to improve its bottom line, including increasing the inventory of national brands, expanding its loyalty program, improving supply chains by working closer with suppliers and implementing “impactful, organic

While Sen. Lindsey Graham has now spilled the beans on the Trumpist g ame and urged passage of a national ban on most abor tions, at this moment this attack on long-established rights is playing out on a state-by-state basis.

Credit to each of the four commissioners and the mayor for their votes. Particular credit to commissioners Jessica Voogd and Maria Maxham for forcefully ar ticulating why it is critical for a small community to intentionally add its voice to the cacophony of suppor t for the right of women to choose, to control their bodies.

Small-town politicos who want to attach their names to signs and events and emails strike us as over reaching and insecure. You are servants, not lords of the manorFormer Mayor Anthony Calderone was famous for this naming rights nonsense We were hoping Mayor Hoskins would avoid it.

That’s why all vocal support for Illinois to take declarative action is essential. Look around us in the pur ple and red Midwest states that surround us and you’ ll see that the need for our state to be a beacon of rights for women is imperative. Good for the women on our village council to lead the way on this defining issue. Good for the men on the council to follow.
