uring the 2017-18 school year, the number of in-school and out-of-school suspensions drastically decreased at Proviso East High School compared to the year before, according to information obtained by the Forest Park Review through a Freedom of Information Act request. The number of out-of-school suspensions also decreased at Proviso Math and Science Academy (PMSA).

“When students engage in a behavior infraction, the function and the cause of the behavior are considered when determining the best intervention or consequence,” Nicole Howard, assistant superintendent of academics and student and family services, said in a statement. “This reduces the reliance on harsher consequences like suspension.”

Last school year, 171 students at Proviso East were charged with 249 total in-school suspensions, down 62 percent from the 648 issued the school year before. Students spent about 246 days in in-school See RESTORATIVE JUSTICE on page 16

Hemstreet was ahead of her time

record number of women are running for elected office in 2018, says Time magazine. In keeping with this spirit of women’s empowerment, I recognize one of our own female political pioneers, Pat Hemstreet, who ran for commissioner in 1971. Pat will turn 95 on Oct. 17 and lives in Pennsylvania.

But she reads the Review religiously and stays current with Forest Park politics.

Back in 1971, she was a stay-at-home mom, raising five boys and four girls and working part-time at local businesses like Calcagno’s grocery store. Pat ran for of office because she was not satisfied with the performance of our village council.

“I wasn’t sure I was ready to be a commissioner,” she recalled, “but I loved Forest Park.”

She placed ads in the Review quoting commissioners at a village council meeting saying they had “nothing to report.” After identifying neglected properties and other trouble spots in Forest Park, the ad asked, “Why is our elected village council so bashful?” Her campaign was sponsored by the “Throw the Rascals Out Committee.”

Chicago Magazine ranked Proviso Math and Science Academy as the third best public high school in suburban Cook County in its “Best Public Schools” review of 2,000 elementary, middle and high schools in the city and suburbs.

The high ranking is a slight decrease from Chicago’s most recent review in 2016, which then gave PMSA the top spot.

“Proviso’s graduation rate has held at 100 percent the past four years,” the magazine noted, also mentioning that PMSA spends $7,811 per student — the lowest of the top 20 finishers — that 90 percent of PMSA freshman are “on track,” and that 74 percent of students achieve “SAT attainment.”

New Trier High School ranked in the top spot on the list, and Glenbrook North High School came in second. Nearby Oak Park and River Forest High School ranked as the 10th best school on Chicago Magazine’s list, up from 14th in 2016.

“Top finishers are some of the most innovative and academically rigorous places you’ll find anywhere,” according to the review.

Experts from the University of Chicago Urban Education Institute, along with the research nonprofit RTI International, compiled the rankings by analyzing spending per pupil, attendance, graduation, 5Essentials survey responses, among other criteria.

The article is available in the September issue of the magazine. Chicago did not review public high schools in 2017.

Council names new village treasurer Georgia Tsaganos succeeds the late Andy Collis

After the Forest Park Village Council, Aug. 27, unanimously approved Mayor Anthony Calderone’s recommendation that Georgia Tsaganos be appointed Forest Park’s new village treasurer, Village Clerk Vanessa Moritz administered the oath of office.

Tsaganos succeeds Andy Collis, who died in July after serving for more than 25 years in the position, according to Calderone.

She lives in Forest Park with her husband, Vasilis, and their 12-year-old triplets, son Fotios and daughters Constantina and Petroula. Raised in Forest Park, she has been a resident since moving back in 2000. Except for a 10-year period, she has been a Forest Park resident her entire life.

Tsaganos described the position as “more of a signatory function” and an “as-needed position.” Calderone termed it as “ministerial” since full time staff members are responsible for the day-to-day operations.

“This is neither a full-time nor part-time position,” he explained. “It is a position wherein the treasurer is responsible for certifying all of the village’s receipts and expenses as well as certifying by signature other related documents

such as plats of survey and documents associated with police and fire pension funds.”

Although she has worked in education since receiving her master of arts in teaching degree in 2011, Tsaganos has over 20 years’ experience in business, including in pharmaceutical sales with Fujisawa Healthcare Inc. and American Pharmaceutical Partners Inc., and as an event planner for Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises Inc.’s now-closed Ben Pao restaurant.

“It’s not like I don’t have the skill set,” she said. “Everything I’ve done except for my time in education has involved finance. I spent quite a few years in business overseeing multimillion-dollar accounts.”

Calderone explained that the treasurer is paid an annual stipend with a range between $2,500 and $3,500 annually.

Tsaganos also will be bonded at village expense for $50,000.

She said her motivation is to give back to the community, not money or political gain.

“I believe in stewardship,” Tsaganos explained. “This is an opportunity to do my part for the village. This is not something to springboard into politics.

“This is my hometown,” she said. “I feel like I’m part of the fabric of Forest Park.”

She was approached about the position by Calderone in

May, she said, but “didn’t want to do anything while Mr. Collis was alive,” noting she knew him since she was a child.

Tsaganos said she contacted Calderone after Collis’ death to see if there still was interest in her serving as his replacement and they “firmed things up in August,” leading to her appointment.

According to Calderone, Tsaganos was selected after consultation with Joe Byrnes, commissioner of accounts and finance. He said several names were discussed but Tsaganos was the person settled on and ultimately recommended for appointment, noting her resume “presented a well-rounded individual.”

Calderone said he did not act sooner since Collis was “alert, walking and able up until his passing,” even though he was confined to an extended care facility for two months.

“Because he was not incapacitated, I did not advance the name of a replacement until and after his passing although in planning ahead, Joe and I began the process of identifying someone to fill this required position,” he explained.

Tsaganos said she will “serve as long as the village needs me to serve,” though her appointment by law concludes with the end of Calderone’s term as mayor.

“I don’t see this position as serving the current mayor,” she explained. “I see the position as serving the village.”

Police officer named in fatal shooting suit Officer Daniel Miller allegedly fatally shot a man driving a stolen vehicle in 2017

The sister of a 26-year-old Glendale Heights man, fatally shot by a Forest Park police officer, amended her lawsuit against Officer Daniel Miller and the village of Forest Park on Aug. 27, alleging that the village and police department failed to properly train officers, encouraged excessive force, failed to properly investigate police-involved shootings, and failed to discipline officers “who engage in unjustified shootings.”

The amended complaint names Miller, for the first time, as the officer who fatally shot victim Marco Gomez.

The lawsuit was filed on Feb. 3 in U.S. District Court, exactly one year after Gomez’s death, on behalf of his estate

by Daisy Perez, who is Gomez’s sister. The family is being represented by Andrew Stroth and Carlton Odim of Action Injury Law Group LLC, a Chicago-based firm that specializes in cases involving police shootings and allegations of police brutality.

“The unconstitutional actions of Defendant Miller as alleged in this complaint were part and parcel of a widespread municipal policy, practice and custom,” reads the complaint.

According to the lawsuit, Gomez was at the wheel of a stolen Volkswagen, which was stopped at a red light in the westbound lane of traffic on Jackson Boulevard at Harlem Avenue in Oak Park about 6 p.m. on Feb. 3, 2017, when Miller spotted the car.

Miller got out of his patrol vehicle and, on foot, approached Gomez’s vehicle, drawing his gun and pointing it at Gomez, the complaint reads. Gomez reversed the car away from Miller, but Miller continued to run after the Volk-

swagen, with his gun still drawn and pointed, according to the lawsuit.

It states that Gomez turned the car and attempted to drive away from Miller but, as he drove away, Miller fired one shot “without cause or provocation” into the Volkswagen, hitting Gomez’s chest and fatally puncturing his lung. Security cameras from a nearby Jiffy Lube captured a recording of the incident, which has been provided to police and the village of Forest Park, the lawsuit said.

Gomez was not armed, the complaint said. He was on parole and previously served time in prison for robbery and theft, Illinois Department of Correction records showed at the time of the incident. He’d been convicted of six thefts between 2008 and 2016 and convicted of robbery in 2008.

After the incident, Forest Park police officials said Gomez attempted to perform a U-turn and that Miller got in front of the vehicle, ordering Gomez to stop. However, police said, Gomez drove toward Miller, who, “fearing for his life,” opened fire, striking Gomez.

“Defendant Miller had good reason to believe that his misconduct would not be revealed or reported by fellow officers or their supervisors, that their false, incomplete, and misleading reports would go unchallenged by these supervisors and fellow officers, from the police superintendents, police board, on down,” the lawsuit reads.

Police Chief Thomas Aftanas declined to comment on the ongoing case. Mayor Anthony Calderone, who supervises the police department as part of his public duties, did not respond to an interview request.

The Gomez family seeks unspecified but “substantial” monetary damages and reimbursement for court, attorney and funeral fees. The village has settled at least three other lawsuits so far this year, with settlement costs amounting to

$233,900, and some, but not all, of the fees being paid by the village’s insurer.

Three other cases are pending in U.S. District Court, all alleging excessive force by Forest Park police.

In February 2018, plaintiff Giovanni LaGioia filed a federal lawsuit alleging a local police officer roughly searched him during a traffic stop in December 2017.

In June 2017, a Forest Park man alleged that a Forest Park police officer knocked his teeth out during a 2015 incident.

In October 2017, plaintiff Eddie Harkins filed a federal lawsuit against the village and police from Pinckneyville Correctional Center, alleging officers used excessive force and denied him medical treatment after arresting him for armed robbery in 2016.

Dominican University names local winner of volunteer award Marilyn Jancewicz’s relationship with the school spans more than 50 years

Marilyn Jancewicz is the 2018 recipient of Dominican University’s O’Keefe Outstanding Volunteer Achievement Award.

The O’Keefe Award is named for Ruth McGrath O’Keefe, Class of 1935, and is presented each year to a dedicated alumna/us for their lifelong support of Dominican University.

Jancewicz came to what was then called Rosary College in 1964 and has never left the area. She has lived in River Forest for 20 years, in Oak Park for 22 years and now in Forest Park for the last 12 years. Really a resident of the tri-village area, she said, “I know it like the back of my hand.”

She received the honor partly because of her volunteer work at Dominican, which includes terms on the President’s Advisory Board and the School of Education’s Advisory Board. She also spearheaded the creation of two endowed scholarships and served on the planning committee for her class’s 40th and 50th reunions. Finally, she served her alma mater in a paid position in the Education Department, helping place students in field education experiences and partnering

This month, the retired educator will begin a new volunteer assignment working with the McGreal Center whose mission is to promote “the research and writing of the history of the Order of Preachers [aka Dominicans] in the United States. The Center facilitates opportunities for serious research related to the Dominican family’s significance in the life of the Order of Preachers, the church and the nation,” according to its website.

During the four years Jancewicz studied at Rosary College, only four of her professors were lay people. All of the rest were sisters. When one of her classmates returned to the campus in River Forest this spring, after an absence of 50 years, she exclaimed, “Where are all the sisters?”

So there’s a sense of urgency in the work she is beginning. “As everyone knows,” she explained, “the order has fewer and fewer members and most of them are older, so they are working hard to preserve the great work the sisters have done.”

D209 adds new bus service for morning activities Additional routes, nearly $300K, to take students to enrichment period

Starting this school year, students at Proviso East and Proviso West will have the ability to participate in a variety of enrichment activities during what Proviso Township High Schools District 209 officials are calling Period 1 Extended Learning Opportunities for Students (ELOS).

All students at East and West are required to be in attendance beginning with the second period, official stated in a document released last month.

The ELOS period takes place from 8 a.m. to 8:50 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and requires an additional bus runs to transport students to the high schools before the first period begins. District officials project that the extra bus service will cost an additional $287,967, or $130.42 for each run.

Published in May by Chicago Review Press, “Courageous Women of the Vietnam War” tells the story of Kate Webb, one of a handful of women reporting on the war who was captured by North Vietnamese troops and assumed dead—until she emerged from the jungle 23 days later. It tells the story of Le Ly Hayslip, who enjoyed a happy childhood in a Vietnamese farming village before fleeing to the U.S., where she founded humanitarian organizations. The book tells the story on Lynda Van Devanter, a young nurse who struggles to stay positive while working in a combat zone hospital. “Courageous Women of the Vietnam War” tells the tales of 14 medics, journalists, survivors and more involved on both sides of the conflict. It is available in hardcover and eBook formats.

“Each one of these books, I had a different experience while writing them. It was enormously inspirational. I would write the stories and I would just feel like I was walking two feet above the air the rest of the day,” Atwood said.

Growing up in southwest suburban Western Springs, Atwood remembers watching “The Hiding Place,” a film about a Dutch war resister’s imprisonment in a Nazi concentration camp. She remembers watching “World at War” with her father, a 1970s British TV show that chronicled the events of WWII. She was always curious about

District administration officials said that they collaborated with First Student, the school bus transportation company, to develop the ELOS transportation routes.

“All students will be made aware of their ELOS and Regular bus route, stop and pickup time prior to the start of school,” officials stated. “Ridership and utilization of the ELOS transportation routes will be monitored to determine if adjustments are needed, as the year progresses.”

After graduating from high school Atwood entered college at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where she majored in English Literature and History. One day, while sitting in the now-shuttered Erik’s Deli in Oak Park, Atwood was comparing two poems for an English Lit class when she realized, “I just love writing.”

“But that was decades before I actually had the courage to even start to allow myself the time to write,” Atwood said.

She graduated from college, raised a family and started teaching piano at the Steckman Studio of Music, 829 S. Oak Park Ave. In her free time, she also wrote poetry and reviewed books, where she observed what writing styles worked and didn’t. Although her favorite books centered on historical events, she dreamed of writing a fantasy story for children.

“Go where your best prayers lead you,” Atwood said, praying for the courage to become a writer.

Then Lisa Reardon walked through Steckman Studio’s door, asking about teaching her daughter piano. The Oak Parker was an editor at the Chicago Review Press and, a few months later, Atwood had a contract for her first book in her hands: “Women Heroes of World War II.” From then on, Atwood’s days were split in two. Half was devoted to researching the stories of women special operations executives, looking on Amazon to see who had written wartime memoirs and reading journalistic reports from that time. The other half, she continued to teach piano, starting her own studio in 2003 in her Forest Park home.

“It’s a very nicely balanced life, I’m thankful for it,” Atwood said.

Superintendent Jesse Rodriguez said that the ELOS actives include “receiving small-group and individual instruction from teachers, taking make-up exams and completing classwork, meeting with counselors, utilizing computer labs and library resources, and receiving support for math and literacy skills.”

Attendance at ELOS is “expected of all students,” Rodriguez noted, adding that students “may choose the ELOS activities that best fit their needs, unless they are specifically assigned to sessions to make up work or participate in interventions.”

The bus transportation for ELOS will be provided for students who receive regular bus service, Rodriguez said.

He said that families were mailed information about the new transportation scheduled and the ELOS activities.

WORLD OF WAR: Kathryn Atwood writes and sings forgotten stories of wartime. of World War I” and, after turning in corrections, started thinking about what war she wanted to cover next. While researching her first book she remembered the story of Pearl Witherington Cornioley, a woman who led a French resistance effort for the British. Atwood was marveled by the woman’s moxie. She reached out and another book, “Code Name Pauline,” was born in 2013.

“It’s her own story and I did some editing because I was like, ‘Well we’re not going to publish it as is, because it was just a Q-andA format memoir,’” Atwood said. “But she said, ‘If you can make it a story, if you can write introductory material to each section and make that flow by itself, then we’ll publish it.’”

About three years later, Atwood’s next book was published, “Women Heroes of

World War II—the Pacific Theater,” which tells the stories of 16 women active in the Japanese side of WWII, published just in time for the 75th anniversary of Pearl Harbor. Atwood knew she wanted to highlight Japanese abuses because, while Nazi cruelties are highly publicized and understood, Japan’s involvement in the war has been silenced by the country, she said. Atwood said she felt heaviness while researching and writing the book, like she was working against something.

“In Japan it’s all sort of covered up, they don’t even learn about the Japanese Holocaust, so there’s this sort of cosmic covering to the whole thing – it’s very strange. In their history museums they blame Americans for the war because of the oil embargo,” Atwood said. “They haven’t really come to terms with it, not as a nation. It’s not in their textbooks, so they’re not teaching their children about it.”

Publication of “Pacific Theater” paved the way for her most current book about the heroines of Vietnam.

Diane Carlson Evans, a woman who served as a nurse during the war and later founded the Vietnam Women’s Memorial, wrote the forward of the book. New York Times bestselling author Joseph Galloway reviewed it, writing: “Her book is well worth reading for a look at the untold stories of the war.”

In October, Atwood plans to showcase the book at Centuries & Sleuths Bookstore, 7419 Madison St., presenting the stories she found and then performing Vietnam War songs with her husband, as part of their “History Singers” band. The two research music published during certain periods of history, essentially looking for what people were singing, and then perform them live, because historically that’s how many people experienced music.

“In war there’s horrible things happening to people and there’s always heroes in the background trying to stop it. I wanted to bring out the heroines,” Atwood said.

Police to pull a plane for Special Olympics The Forest Park Police Department will participate in its first ever Plane Pull at O’Hare International Airport on Sept.

22, with a team of 20 dragging a plane down 12 feet of runway as fast as possible. Proceeds from the event will again benefit Special Olympics Illinois, an advocacy organization that supports individuals with disabilities.

Officers will either pull a UPS Airbus A300 or United Airlines 737 at United Airlines’ Cargo facility, with each plane weighing more than 180,000 pounds.

Detective Mike O’Connor, who

also serves as the department’s crime-free multihousing of officer, said he wasn’t sure how many teams Forest Park of officers would compete against, but last year, he said, 85 teams pulled aircraft down the tracks.

“So far every event we have done … has had a bunch of support from the community, people donating their time and money, cheering us on; it’s a good feeling,” O’Connor said in an email, adding that the Forest Park Fire Department always makes a “significant financial donation” to the cops’ Special

Olympics drives.

“They come out to volunteer alongside us, or to cheer us on in the law enforcement-only events,” O’Connor said.

Police aim to raise $3,000 in donations, which will be added on to the nearly $9,000 the department has raised for Special Olympics Illinois so far this year through its Torch Run, Cop on a Rooftop and Polar Plunge events.

Local’s journey from orchids to land restoration work Kathleen Garness reveals lessons plants can teach us about human nature

Kathleen Garness can credit a fascination with orchids to leading her to the land restoration work she does today.

Garness is originally from Chicago’s North Side. She used to frequently walk past a flower shop called Minim while living in the Boystown neighborhood in Chicago.

At the time, Garness wasn’t making a lot of money but she made a habit of buying at least one plant and placing it on her windowsill.

She was mesmerized by the shop.

“It was like no flower shop I’d ever seen before…[it] was like walking into the jungle… and I thought I have never seen anything so beautiful in my entire life,” Garness said.

She became friends with the storeowner and became fascinated with learning about orchids. This love of orchids eventually led Garness to stumble upon land restoration work.

But Garness’ love of nature started decades before that first visit into Minim.

She said her first memory of a plant occurred when she was four years old. Garness started to notice plants sprouting up from the sidewalk near the tall apartment

building she lived in.

“I must have thought, how strong this little plant must be to be able to find its way through a little teeny crack in the sidewalk,” she said.

To Garness, this was a tale of resilience and instilled in her an appreciation for the Earth.

When Garness was a child, her mother was diagnosed with tuberculosis and was sent away to a sanitarium. Garness lived with her aunt and uncle for a year while her mother was treated.

Her aunt had a garden and taught Garness the names of different plants.

When Garness was in her 20s when she found a book called “Orchids of the Western Great Lakes Region.” After reading the book, she realized there was a native orchid population in Illinois.

The book was published in the late 1980s.

Garness wondered if orchids were still thriving in Illinois.

A trip in 2002 to REI with her son, who was buying boots for his Boy Scouts trip, led her closer to the answer to her question.

She met Steven Frankel there, a biology professor from Northeastern Illinois University.

Frankel didn’t know the answer to her question but he connected her to someone who he thought might at the Chicago Botanic Garden.

From this chance connection, she got involved with the Plants of Concern program which operates out of the Chicago Botanic Garden. The program focuses on collecting data on rare plant species. Garness has been working with Plants of Concern for about 17 years.

She spends many of her days pulling up invasive species like garlic mustard seed and teaching volunteers about land restoration.

Ken Klick, who is a restoration ecologist of the Lake County Forest Preserve District, was teaching Garness about rare plants one day. He pointed out several plants to Garness, some of which were around three inches tall.

From this experience, Garness learned that land restoration has applications past just learning about different plant species.

“They all kind of looked the same until I started looking much more closely and learning about their lifestyles, which is something that I think we need to do with people as well,” Garness said.

She thinks learning about people’s stories will help push back against prejudice and

There is a need for individuals’ stories to be heard today, Garness said, especially in a news climate that seems to prize divisive and aggressive voices.

One of the most challenging parts of her work is to get young people away from screens and into nature.

But she has hope about the millennial generation when it comes to respecting the Earth.

“I feel that people of my son’s generation have a lot more common sense. I feel that there’s a trend away from unconscious consumption,” Garness said.

GLOBAL ACTIVIST: Prexy Nesbitt has traveled the world and back, educating those on racism and history.

Not your ivory-tower academic Prexy Nesbitt’s classroom is the real world, emphasis on ‘world’

Part II ’m not an academic in an ivory tower,” declared Prof. Prexy Nesbitt, 74, in an interview with the Review in August right before leading a group of teachers on a trip to Cuba to learn how educators there are dealing with the issue of racism.

“The ivory towers couldn’t tolerate me.”

Indeed, the Oak Park resident dropped out of graduate school at Columbia University in New York in 1966 because the school did not renew his financial aid after he was “right in the middle” of a student protest against the Vietnam war and the school’s plans to expand into Harlem.

Within a week of dropping out, he was drafted to fight in the war he was protesting, but evaded the draft by moving to Africa to join the Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO or Frente de Libertação de Moçambique), a movement with which he had become familiar while studying abroad in Tanzania a couple of years before.

“I did not agree with the war in Vietnam,” he explained, “and decided that if I’m going to fight, I want to fight for something I could believe in, which was the struggle against Portuguese colonialism in East Africa. It was not an intellectual engagement for me. It was something I believed in very, very deeply.”

As it turned out, Eduardo Mondlane, head of the FRELIMO at the time, told him that they would not let him fight, but that they did want him to contribute to their cause by helping to build schools.

That was the beginning of 50 years, on and off, of Nesbitt’s active engagement with Africans fighting to end colonialism and apartheid in Sub-Saharan Africa. In addition to

FRELIMO, he was actively engaged with five other liberation movements at different times.

“I decided to support these liberation movements,” he explained, “because in my view they had a perspective and set of objectives that were consistent with creating a world in which race would no longer be the dominant force that it is even today. It was about never seeing people as the enemy based on race; it was seeing systems as the enemy.”

Prexy’s work with FRELIMO was interrupted in 1969 by a telegram he received from his father saying that his mother was dying. He arrived back in Chicago in time to see her once before she died, but his return was the beginning of a series of sojourns — working for oppressed people in Africa, then in the U.S., Africa, Switzerland and so forth — which would shape the trajectory of his life for decades.

During the times he has lived in the U.S., Nesbitt taught in a variety of schools, did organizing for unions, and gave educational speeches on behalf of the anti-apartheid cause.

Part of his work in this country was the effort to convince schools, church denominations and unions to divest from South Africa as a tactic aimed at ending apartheid in that country, an effort that culminated in the passage here of the Comprehensive Sanctions Bill of 1986.

Because he had evaded the draft by moving to Africa and because the administration in power in Washington regarded the liberation movements he worked with as “communist,” Nesbitt was under surveillance and had a file with the FBI. Packages delivered to him were routinely opened before he received them.

He would return to Africa many times, sometimes under cover, to edit magazines and do other kinds of educational work in support of liberation movements. One such engagement took place in a convent in the Transkei region. He was transported under cover to impart what was going on outside

of South Africa to the information-hungry, anti-apartheid cadre assembled there. He was then smuggled out — dressed as a nun — right past the South African security forces.

He was afraid to criticize liberation movements when he saw corruption. For example, he authored a report in which he recommended discontinuing funding for the Pan African Congress (PAC) because he had uncovered “a lot of corruption going on with the use of monies.”

Nesbitt worked for the World Council of Churches in Geneva, Switzerland from 1979 through 1983 with the Programme to Combat Racism, where he was able to get the WCC to withdraw its money from banks involved with the apartheid regime in South Africa.

The release of Nelson Mandela from jail in 1990 was, of course, a huge event that signaled a genuine shift in power in that country and in all of Africa from white colonial rule to self-governance by black Africans. The problem for Nesbitt was when black African rulers fell into the same abuses of power that infested their former colonial oppressors.

“There are not a lot of the leaders of those liberation movements who have kept the faith with the values that we were talking about,” he noted.

Much of his work as an educator is done outside the classroom. At present, he teaches African History at Columbia College in downtown Chicago, but two weeks ago he returned from Cuba where he brought American teachers to dialogue with teachers on the island about how they are addressing the issue of racism.

He is anxious to get Americans to visit other countries, in part because he thinks Americans are uninformed, misinformed or at best partially informed about what is going on in the rest of the world.

“If people are not knowledgeable about the history,” he said, “you can’t change any attitudes or convictions they have.

That’s why I teach and take people to places like South Africa and Cuba. I watch them and I see lights go on in their heads and hear them ask, ‘Why did I not know about this before?’

That’s what I do with my organization, Making the Road.”

In a very real sense, Nesbitt’s underlying mission is not to help students learn about Africa as much as to help students see their lives from a new perspective.

“I learned out of all of this involvement,” he says, “that it wasn’t about skin color. It was being with people who paid the highest price you can possibly pay for your values. Being taught by people like that, I internalized a much more clear understanding that would be the basis of the organization of all my life.”

His years working with liberation movements also gave him a new perspective on his own country. To explain, he quoted an African he greatly admires, named Amilcar Cabral, who once told him, “The highest form of solidarity you can give us Africans is to change the conditions and circumstances of the United States.”

“I think it’s truer now than it’s ever been before,” he said.

“Because the United States sets the pace and shapes the framework for so much of world affairs and of human interactions, it’s only going to be when there is real change in the United States, that there will be possibilities for change in other parts of the world.”

Looking back at a long life in which he participated in the making of the history he teaches, he admitted to having some regrets.

“When I got involved with the liberation movements in Africa, I was told that I won’t be allowed to have a personal life, that my personal life will always be subordinate to the imperatives of the struggle. We were about changing the world, not trying to line up the loves of our lives. At the time, I very much believed that. Now I think it was all nonsense.”

Is he happy?

“I have had wonderful, wonderful people who have loved me and whom I have loved through the course of it all. Did I do well by the conventional measures of marital life and family? No. But did I do better by the other measures of friendship and contribution and serving? Then, I am very happy.”

Police arrest 16-year-old in Park District carjacking Police arrested a Chicago juvenile on Aug. 29, after the 16-year-old allegedly stole a Honda from the parking lot at the Park District of Forest Park, 7501 Harrison St., about 5:49 p.m. on June 29. The victim said two men wearing bandanas came up to him, one of whom pointed a gun and ordered him out of the car. The two men then got in the Honda and drove east on Harrison.

“Detectives continued to investigate this offense and, based on interviews and video surveillance footage, developed a suspect,” Police Chief Thomas Aftanas said in a statement. “He was charged with aggravated vehicular hijacking and was transported to the Juvenile Detention Center.”

Chicago police took two people into custody following a chase on Aug. 29 that resulted in a car crash on the Eisenhower Expressway and carried over to the CTA Blue Line tracks. The incident shut down the train line for about an hour.

The 11th District Police Department reports that an armed robbery took place in Chicago at 10:15 a.m. somewhere in the vicinity of Homan and Albany, according to an email from Chicago police spokesman Jose Jara.

The report notes that the victim waved down Chicago police officers, telling them that the offenders who robbed him at gunpoint drove a silver vehicle with Florida plates.

Chicago police spotted the vehicle and attempted to curb the car, but the driver refused to stop. A chase ensued and the two offenders exited the vehicle further along the Eisenhower Expressway.

ABC 7 News reported that the vehicle crashed near the overpass at Oak Park Avenue. Chicago Police report that a foot chase took place and two offenders were taken into custody.

No one was reported injured in the pursuit, according to police. One firearm was recovered and police are looking for a second, police said.

A damaged Hyundai Sonata with Florida plates was later seen blocked by several police vehicles in a parking lot at the U.S. Postal Service building at 1116 Garfield St., in Oak Park.

CTA spokesman Jon Kaplan said in a telephone interview that power was cut three times to the Blue Line between the Forest Park and Cicero stops between 10 and 11:05 a.m. at the request of Chicago police.

Police could be seen on the tracks of the Blue Line searching for the offenders.

Wallet lost at dollar store A Berwyn woman lost her wallet at Dollar Tree about 2:45 p.m. on Aug. 28, and her credit card was charged three times.

The woman entered 7709 Roosevelt Road and shopped for about 30 minutes. When she went to pay for her items, her wallet was missing. She then checked her bank statement and found her debit card had been charged $21.31 at Wendy’s, $314.92 at Old Navy and $396 at SP DTS Chicago. Her wallet contained a debit card, credit card, driver’s license, FOID card and multiple membership cards. A few people bumped into her at Dollar Tree but she’s unsure if they stole her wallet.

Man kisses woman on CTA without consent

A man started kissing a woman without her consent on the Blue Line about 6:29 a.m. on Aug. 30.

Police were en route to the Harlem Blue Line stop when officers spotted a man yelling in the middle of the road at Jackson and Thomas, asking someone to call police. The man told police he had been on the Blue Line when he saw a man get in a woman’s face and start kissing her without her consent.

The man stood up, pulled the man off the woman and asked if she knew him. She said she did not and began to ask CTA employees for help when the suspect ran off the train to Circle Avenue.

The man got off the train too, and ran after him as far as Jackson and Thomas, at which point he could no longer keep up with him.

Five bikes stolen

■■Between 10:30 p.m. on Aug. 29 and 6:21 a.m. on Aug. 30, someone broke into a garage on the 1100 block of Thomas and stole four bikes. The victim said the garage’s service door was unlocked.

■■A Berwyn man was throwing garbage cans around the 7500 block of Jackson about 6:50 a.m. on Aug. 31, yelling that someone stole his bike. The man, who is homeless, parked his bike, and walked around to the side of a building where he sleeps. He said he was gone for approximately “5 to 10 seconds” when he returned to get some change he forgot and saw his bike was gone. The bike is valued at $150.

These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Forest Park Police Department, Aug. 27-Sept.3, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded.

Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

Gaudete!

This is Latin for Rejoice!

As Christians, we rejoice at the wonder that God loves the entire human race as his precious children even though we often act contrary to his plans for us. We understand there is nothing we can ever do to make up for the wrong we have done. But God’s love for us is so deep that he sent his son Jesus to live with us and pay the price for our wrongs. This is the reason we Rejoice! Gaudete!

As our response to God’s love for us, St. John members are now free to share that love by serving others. We meet together to learn more about God’s plans for us, and to thank him for what he has done.

We encourage each other in good times and in bad.

St. John Lutheran Church continues to rejoice for over 150 years of blessings and service to the people of Forest Park and the surrounding community. St. John invites our neighbors to participate in various activities such as the community garden, choir, the children’s choir Choristers, and our quilting group Sew What! The congregation also provides space for organizations such as Housing Forward, Alcoholics Anonymous, Boy Scouts–including a

charter female troop, ESL, and other non-profit groups. In partnership with the West Cook YMCA, St. John provides space for children’s summer and afterschool programs. St. John also invites the community to various musical events in the Byzantine style sanctuary and to parties in their revamped community garden.

This year St. John will be performing the Gaudete Festival.

Progressive discipline

T

here was a superintendent of the Proviso Township High Schools, and there have been a good many of them over recent years, who confided to a local newspaper that all would be well in these failed public high schools if only 300 students could be permanently expelled.

You bet, we were told, it would be a dandy public high school if only 10 percent of the student body were turned out onto the street, left to their own devices. We mentioned it would be something less than a public school if administrators got to cherry pick who could attend. The superintendent agreed, acknowledging it was a fantasy.

But judging by the way discipline was dished out at Proviso East in the following years it was more reality than fantasy. The district did not permanently expel endless numbers of students but in the 2016 school year it did pass out 648 suspensions. Some of those were in-school suspensions, some out-of-school suspensions. Any way you parse those numbers, it reflected full failure in this district.

Now things have changed markedly and for the better.

In the school year that ended in the spring, just 249 suspensions were issued at East. That is a 62 percent decline.

It doesn’t mean there wasn’t bad behavior. It doesn’t mean there weren’t consequences. It does mean the entire approach to teaching our young people how to behave shifted from purely punitive to what has come to be called, a little grandly, restorative justice. Mainly it means creating new mechanisms, from teacher training to adding “interventionists,” which bring students who are acting out to account for those actions — mainly disruption, profanity, verbal fights. This process brings two students shouting down the hallway directly into a process of talking it through, of peer counseling.

Tossing students who are not succeeding out on the street did not ever result in a better outcome. Created more isolation and less accountability.

Who do we have to thank for this? Well, not surprisingly, Kimberly Lightford, our local state senator, drove statewide change on school suspensions. She forced every school district in the state to radically shift its discipline model.

And at Proviso high schools the statewide change synced up with a new school board and administration that saw the damage its archaic discipline system was creating.

The village treasurer

Who knew? Forest Park has a village treasurer.

And now, following the recent death of the beloved Andy Collis, it has a new village treasurer. Turns out Collis, who everyone thought the world of, has been the treasurer of our small burg for decades. He collected a very modest stipend and we suppose he signed some papers now and again.

Now Forest Park has a new village treasurer, duly appointed by the village council on Aug. 27. Her name is Georgia Rombakis Tsaganos. Most people paying attention to social media will know her simply as Gia Rombakis. A teacher the past several years, Rombakis Tsaganos will also, we’re confident, be an able signer of papers.

We remain uncertain why Forest Park has a village treasurer, why it’s not the village’s finance director or the village clerk. Life is full of mysteries.

The flag belongs in our hearts

harissa Hawkins hadn’t warned Pastor Walter Mitty that she was going to drop a bombshell at last night’s Poplar Park Community Church council meeting.

“I move,” she said when it came time for new business, “that we remove the American flag from alongside the altar and put it in the social hall.”

A loud silence hung like an ominous cloud over the meeting, like everyone was just waiting for thunder and lightning to strike at any moment.

Gerhardt Aschenbrenner reacted by fingering the American flag pin in his sport coat lapel, closing his eyes, bowing his head and thinking, “Here we go again.

First it was the environment. Then Black Lives Matter. Then it was separating children from their refugee parents.”

Sharissa pulled Asch out of his emotional retreat by saying, “Asch, I know what you’re thinking. This is not about football players kneeling during the national anthem.”

The social worker couldn’t repress a smile as she watched the man sitting across the table startled into awareness of the group.

“What’s going on,” she continued, “is that I’ve been thinking about that hymn we sang last week.”

“You mean um …” Eric Anderson paused to search his memory, “that one that begins with ‘This is my song O God of all the nations’?”

The social worker smiled at the man who looked like he walked straight out of an Eddie Bauer catalogue.

“That’s the one,” she said. “And what really hit me were those lines that went ‘here’ — meaning America — ‘are my hopes, my dreams, my holy shrine. But other hearts in other lands are beating with hopes and dreams as true and high as mine.’”

Asch was shaking his head as he asked, “So are you putting our country down again, Sharissa?”

“C’mon Asch, you know better than most people that I love this country and that’s why I work for low wages as a social worker on the South Side. I work to …” she said, pausing to find the words to finish her sentence, “to enlarge the tent, to make it big enough so everyone in this country can be blessed.”

Another pause. Most of the people sitting around the table were afraid of open conflict and had retreated into their emotional shells.

Pastor Mitty finally decided to say something.

“Sharissa, are you saying the flag should not be respected, that it stands for something you are not proud of ?”

“No, Pastor,” Sharissa replied. “I understand how people can interpret what I’m saying that way, but that’s not what I mean.

Let me put it this way. Jesus was not an American, right?”

The council members, even Asch, slowly, one by one, nodded their heads in agreement.

“OK, so what I’m saying is that this whole kneeling during the national anthem has become a fashionable bandwagon for some folks to jump on, and for other people it’s a sign that those kneeling don’t love America.

“I don’t want to wave that red flag. What I’m saying is that the American flag is a symbol. A symbol of this country. And the cross is a symbol for us Christians of the love of God. Jesus commanded us to love God with all our heart, mind, soul and strength.”

She paused again to let that sink in, knowing that the council was now at least partly with her.

“And Jesus added that we should love everyone and everything else — not with our whole heart — but ‘as ourselves’. I’m not asking us to burn the flag or disrespect it. I’m just asking us to take it away from next to the altar and put it another prominent place, in the social hall … to kind of symbolically say that we know who is God and what or who is not.”

To everyone’s surprise, and relief, Asch responded with a quiet, almost affectionate tone, saying, “I think I get what you are saying, Sharissa, and it doesn’t bother me as much as it did a few minutes ago. You know I don’t agree with you and that I will vote ‘no’ when it comes to a vote. But the reason I’m not angry now is that I heard you acknowledging that you respected how I feel about the flag, partly by offering to move to the social hall instead of getting rid of it altogether.”

The first reaction of those sitting around the table was a sigh of relief.

But almost immediately, the whole tone of the meeting changed from defensiveness to a feeling that no one could put into words. It was sort of a feeling of belonging. Or perhaps it was more of a feeling of safety, a belief that unity did not require uniformity.

And after the meeting was adjourned, everyone — coincidentally perhaps — left thinking about John McCain.

Joseph J. Mason II is giving black men the skills to succeed Joseph J. Mason II was recently given the opportunity to head Urban Prep Academy (Englewood Campus) as Principal at 27!

Joseph grew up in Forest Park, IL. In 8th grade he scored in the 99 percentile in math, was in the gifted program at Northwestern all while being on the baseball All-star team and AAU-basketball team.

Joseph entered HS at Providence St. Mel where he played basketball his freshman year the “Love of his Life”. I took a position out of state and he moved in with his dad his sophomore year in HS. His dad Joseph Sr. was in grad school at the University of Chicago so he transferred the young Joseph to Kenwood Academy where he was the star basketball player (point guard).

Not only could Joseph play ball he was also smart! In High School, he started receiving academic scholarships to Perdue, Marquette and even West Point came to interview him; but Joseph wanted to play basketball. He eventually settled for Union College in Schenectady, NY (Ivy League) where he could play ball and it was academically challenging. He soon became the star athlete playing point guard. He also pledged Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. We had high hopes for Joseph to play in the NBA but unfortunately he had several injuries.

In Joseph’s junior/senior year in College he thought about applying for Law School – He then heard about a program called Teach

At PMSA, six students were charged with out-of-school suspensions last year, spending 17 total days outside school. The most common reason was drug use and possession, with three counts of this type issued. The district does not define alcohol as a drug.

No in-school suspensions were issued.

“Throughout the year, restorative practices are ongoing,” Bessie Karvelas, principal at PMSA, said in a statement. “We give our students social-emotional support; parental conferences are also ongoing. Counselors and administrators continually meet with students to reinforce supports that have been put in place.”

Schools across Proviso High Schools District 209 operate on a restorative justice theory of discipline, which aims to teach students to resolve their problems through mediation, reflection and agreements. If students get in a shouting match in a hallway, for example, peers are given the opportunity to work out their issues in a “peace circle,” which involves the parties sitting in a circle with a mediator who gets them to talk about the incident, why it happened and how it can be fixed.

“This gives students the opportunity to re-

flect on, and take ownership of, their behaviors, understand why it was inappropriate, and take actions to make things right,” Howard said in the statement. “If the students were instead just given a suspension, they would have returned to school with the same issues and likely escalated their conflict to a physical level.”

As a way to further decrease the number of discipline incidents at Proviso East and PMSA this year, staff are building a threetiered system of intervention and supports, with the tiers essentially being prevention, group support, and individual support. Staff are also being trained to deal with behavioral issues the same way across schools, in an effort to set clear expectations and support the development of positive behavior. “This will really get after some of those disruptive behaviors like talking too much in class or walking around the class disrupting other students,” Howard said in her statement.

“The Office of Academics,” she added, “has invested in interventionists and programs designed to help students develop good decision-making skills and healthy habits of mind. This approach has kept more students engaged in school, thereby decreasing the number of overall infractions.”

An easy vote for video gaming This November, Forest Park residents will be given the opportunity to vote on whether or not video gaming should be prohibited. The decision is easy, vote No to prohibiting gaming in our village. Why is it an easy decision?

Well the answer is simple, we have had video gaming in our community for over two years, without any negative impact. In fact, we have seen positive impact. Video gaming has paid for a brand new ambulance in town, contributed revenue that has helped offset our deficit, stabilized businesses that were having a hard time staying afloat, and has afforded a lot of businesses the ability to give back to our community.

The main street community has seen businesses make improvements to their properties and generous donations to organizations like Forest Park Little League, Opportunity Knocks, Misericordia and Hephzibah to name a few. These upgrades and kind contributions could easily go away if these businesses are stripped of their additional income generated from video gaming. Most surrounding villages already have video gaming, and Oak Park is under consideration as well.

Removing gaming from our village could mean removing business from our neighborhood. People will search it out in other communities.

I personally do not want to see services eliminated or reduced, such as law enforcement and sidewalk plowing, or have my water bill raised, village parking costs raised, and other fees within the village raised when the revenue from video gaming can help offset that. Before you make your decision, make sure you are well aware of the facts surrounding this argument.

I have heard many misconceptions, like signage for example. The laws are in accordance with these businesses liquor licenses. They cannot put up signage. There has not been an uptick in crime. Do your due diligence so you can make an informed decision, not based off hearsay and lack of information.

This should not be the personal vendetta of a small group of angry voters who have pushed back against gaming because of their own ego. Put your pride aside, and vote in favor of what is best for the entire village. Vote No. Let Forest Park grow!

There’s no way to stop gaudy signage Many of my neighbors have said, “I don’t have a problem with video gambling — it’s the gaudy signs. We don’t want our Madison Street to look like the south side of Roosevelt in Berwyn.”

The Mayor, and proponents of video gambling, have said, “That won’t be a problem — we’ll amend the Village Code to say there shall be no signage advertising video gambling.” They were at the same meeting I was at, July 12, 2016, where our own well-respected village attorney, Tom Bastion, told all of us that was bull. Here’s his expert legal opinion: “Any regulation of signage has to be content neutral. It is protected by the First Amendment. We cannot single out signage as to ‘video gambling only.’ In any action filed against the village, they would prevail. The Supreme Court has come out recently and made very clear what is permitted, and what is not permitted … but we absolutely cannot single out, whether it’s video gaming, or a drive-thru restaurant, for special regulations, or special restrictions.”

What’s in place now is a “gentleman’s agreement” with the bar owners: “They don’t put signs up, and it doesn’t get put into Village Code.”

I’m not normally a betting man, but what will you bet, that in a year or two, if they get their way with video gambling, the signs start to show up? Or that when these bar owners sell, the new owners will realize there’s nothing stopping them from lighting up their Madison Street facades like a low-budget Reno?

“We’re getting clobbered by Berwyn!” they’ll say. “We have to have signs to level the playing field!”

We’re not Berwyn. Do you trust this “gentlemen’s agreement”? Vote Yes to restore the prohibition on video gambling in Forest Park.
