Healy’s Westside manager FOIA’d residents’ emails Mark Hosty submitted request to county clerk on Feb. 7 By NONA TEPPER

he bar manager responsible for filing three nuisance questions that clogged an upcoming election ballot also filed a Freedom of Information Act request to the Cook County Clerk’s Office, asking for the emails and job qualifications of a husband and wife in town, according to information obtained by the Forest Park Review through a FOIA request. Mark Hosty, a River Forest resident, former Forest Park village commissioner and manager of Healy’s Westside, FOIA’d the Cook County Clerk’s Office on Feb. 7 for all emails between resident Nick Ardinger and his wife, Jessica Rinks, who works in the elections division at the County Clerk. He also asked for the job posting and qualifications related to her position. In an email, Rinks said that having officials at work go through her emails as part of a FOIA request has been “truly unfortunate and stressful.” “I take public service very seriously,” she wrote in an email to the Review. “I abide by all professional standards and ethics at the Cook County Clerk’s office. I’m a consummate professional and I don’t like the accusation that I am using my position inappropriately. Nothing could be further from the truth.” In response to his FOIA, Hosty received four emails between the couple, all discussing a forwarded invitation from Clerk David Orr to participate in the 2017 Chicago Pride Parade. Musical about a famous bomb doesn’t bomb

T

he Haymarket tragedy holds a special place in the hearts of many Forest Parkers. That’s why four of us went to see Haymarket: A New Folk Musical, which is being staged by the Underscore Theatre Company at Theater Wit, 1229 W. Belmont, Chicago. The 12-member cast is multi-talented. They play an array of instruments. They sing and dance and deliver stirring speeches. Wearing period costumes and playing down-home instruments like the washboard, the cast evokes the spirit of the times with their folk songs. Director Nick Thornton said, “We focus on the characters as people,” Nick said. “We can identify with them because every generation has its own struggles.” The struggle at the time of Haymarket was for the 8-hour work day. The opening scenes show the group of anarchists, led by Albert Parsons, celebrating after they organized a peaceful pro-labor demonstration. They are mostly young idealists and their fervor can be felt as they sing about their movement. There is a shadow of violence, though, when Louis Lingg sings about “Lady Dynamite.” Lingg was the youngest of the group and the most hot-headed. “We human-

ized Lingg,” Nick said, “and developed his outsider status.” The ultimate insider is Lucy Parsons who provides the emotional core of the play. She is a revolutionary Earth mother, who longs for a more active role with the anarchists. Another key character is August Spies. He uses his newspaper to spread the movement’s message. Spies is not much of a speaker but his printed words are powerful. It was partly his idea to print the notorious leaflet that called on workers to arm themselves for the Haymarket gathering. The meeting was to protest police violence, which had caused the deaths of several strikers at the McCormick Reaper plant. Albert Parsons was determined to use only non-violent forms of protest, but his wife took a more militant stance. The Haymarket meeting started out peacefully. As soon as police arrived, though, an unknown person threw a dynamite bomb into their ranks. Lingg dismissed it as the act of an amateur. But the explosion shook the nation and led to a crackdown on the anarchists. The second half of the musical portrays how the state took revenge against the movement’s leaders, many of whom were not present at the time of the bombing.

Spies is not

much of a speaker but his printed words are powerful.

The cast gives heart-wrenching performances exploring how they suffered under the authorities. Their trial is staged like the farce it became. After being sentenced to death, the defendants were permitted to give speeches. The formerly tongue-tied Spies delivers a marathon speech, captured in the song, “Keep on Talking, August Spies.” As for the execution of Spies and his comrades, “Staging a hanging on stage was a challenge,” Nick said. They came up with an ingenious way of showing it. Ingenuity is on display throughout the show, as actors use their instruments as props. Finally, the executed are laid to rest in Forest Park. Lucy Parsons reports that the procession grew as they made their way to the cemetery. The musical is heart-breaking at the end but shows that Lucy had lost none of her fire. At the conclusion, a cast member made an emotional appeal to the audience to spread the word about Haymarket. “They love each other and they love performing the play,” Nick said. Their run was just extended until Sept. 16. There are even plans for a production of “Haymarket” in London. “It’s still topical, unfortunately,” Nick said. All the more reason for us, who live near the hallowed ground of the Haymarket Martyrs’ Monument, to go see it. ■■John Rice is a columnist/private detective, who has seen his business and family thrive in Forest Park. D209 board adopts bond resolutions Move designed to help raise cash, refund outstanding bonds By MICHAEL ROMAIN Staff Reporter

During a regular meeting on Aug. 14, the Proviso Township High Schools District 209 school board voted unanimously to adopt two resolutions related to the issuance of up to $16.5 million in general obligation limited tax bonds. The bond issuance is designed to increase the district’s working cash fund in order to help pay for capital improvements and to refund the remaining $14 million of $24 million in outstanding bonds that were issued in 2008. During the Aug. 14 meeting, officials said that the bond issuance will not result in increased taxes. Earlier this year, district officials said that the move to refinance the $24 million in outstanding bonds was designed to take advantage of lower interest rates that would result in substantial savings and more cash on hand to pay for capital investments like the long-term master facilities plan. District officials also said that the refinancing could possibly result in a higher credit rating for the district. In August, the district announced that D209 received an upgraded bond rating from Standard & Poor. The rating increased from A to A+. CONTACT: michael@oakpark.com

Local Boy Scout troop starts girls den Troop 107 will have a new, girls-only pack in early September

Forest Park Troop 107 will soon add a girls-only troop. Last year, the Boy Scouts of America rolled out their “Scouts BSA” program, which allows the younger Cub Scouts to offer girlsonly troops as a way to provide families more group options and increase membership. In January 2019, Scouts BSA will officially launch girls-only troops for the older Boy Scouts. Troop 107 is an early adopter of the program, and plans to start their new, girls-only pack in early September. “Girls Scouts is a fantastic organization, they’ve been around like 106 years, they are a great group,” said Matthew Brown, scoutmaster for Troop 107. “We’re just trying to create an additional option for girls. Every troop is a little different; one might be a better fit or the other meeting schedule dates might not work out. I just want to get as many people involved in Scouts as I can.” St. John Lutheran Church in Forest Park

has agreed to be the chartering organization for the new girls troop and will provide the physical space for the den to meet and to vet adult leaders. “I think it’s a good thing. I think Girl Scouts is also a fine organization. So I don’t think it’s so much a matter of competing between the organizations,” said Pastor Leonard Payton. “If you consider a family that has both boys and girls in it, well sometimes just the scheduling issues will make it more convenient for the family to do one or the other.” Brown said this year the girls troop will likely do things in tandem with the boys den, like attending Northwestern University’s STEM and Sports Day, going horseback riding and “getting outdoors as much as we can.” Last year, the troop camped in Rock Cut State Park in western Illinois, Apple River Canyon in the northwest part of the state, and took an extended camping trip to Badlands National Park in South Dakota. Brown said the 24-person troop embraces the scout-led model of leadership and that

those elected to higher office in the den will meet this week to plan events for the coming year. “Our job is to guide them in what they want to do, and help them figure out how to do it,” Brown said. About half the scouts are Forest Park residents; the other half live in other communities, such as Oak Park, Brookfield, and River Forest. The group is looking for members, as well as a new, preferably female, scoutmaster to lead the girls group. ADIOS: Cocina de los Lobos chefs rolled their last burrito in the store on Aug. 9.

After more than a decade on Madison Street, Cocina de los Lobos closed on Aug. 9, merging its menu and staff with that at Healy's Westside, according to a Healy's employee. Cocina de los Lobos is owned by Mark Hosty, a River Forest resident, former Forest Park village commissioner and manager of Healy's. Hosty bought the building that Healy's and the now-shuttered Cocina reside in for $170,000 in July 2006, according to Cook County property records. "It's been a little bit slower and [Hosty] had been talking about it for a while and so we finally just did it," said an employee at Healy's, who declined to be named. Healy's now serves the fajitas, quesadillas and, of course, margaritas Cocina was known for. The website for Cocina is down, and its old phone number redirects to Healy's. Hosty did not respond to an interview request. The property, 7321 Madison St., is being marketed by @properties but, as of press time, there was not yet an available listing. Representatives from @properties did not respond to interview requests.

Author zeroes in on dark sky parks in latest novel Lori Rader-Day will hold upcoming reading at Centuries & Sleuths Bookstore By SIOBHAN NEELA-STOCK Contributing Reporter

Dark sky parks are Lori Rader-Day’s latest fascination. The Chicago mystery author’s newest novel, “Under a Dark Sky,” is inspired by the Headlands International Dark Sky Park in Mackinaw City, Michigan. Rader-Day is scheduled to read part of her novel and answer questions at Centuries & Sleuths Bookstore, 7419 Madison St., 11 a.m. on Aug. 25. The fiction writer isn’t the type to bore her audience – she plans to read from her book for a few minutes and spend most of the session in discussion with participants. RaderDay also pointed out that the bookstore is the only mysteryspecific bookstore in the Chicago area and said these types of bookstores are disappearing. Rader-Day said she has always been interested in constellations but she doesn’t consider herself a “serious stargazer.” But her publishing agent did notice that, out of all her ideas for her next book, she seemed the most excited about the one set in a dark sky park. These parks restrict light pollution which allows viewers to enjoy a starry night as nature originally intended. Homer Glen, Illinois is the first village to be recognized as a Dark Sky Community in the state and is just a 35-minute drive from Forest Park. But correctly identifying Ursa Major and other constellations isn’t what Rader-Day wants her readers to get out of

her book. “The story is really about a person who is stuck in her life and wants to get back into moving forward,” Rader-Day said. Eden, the main character, escapes to a dark sky park to deal with her grief after her husband dies. She soon finds herself one suspect of many when a dead body is discovered at the park. The book isn’t based off of Rader-Day or anyone she knows. But it is based off one of her fears. The Indiana native isn’t afraid of the dark but she is afraid of losing her husband. “I think when we love somebody it makes us very vulnerable to the loss of that person so I wanted to write about that,” Rader-Day said. The award-winning author didn’t initially set out to write mystery novels. But this changed after Rader-Day attended the Midwest Writers’ Workshop in Angola, Indiana in 2008. An instructor there placed her in a mystery writing group after reading one of her short stories. “As far as I know I wasn’t writing a mystery…the teacher of that group said, there’s a crime in the first 15 pages…and if you are going to solve that crime, it’s possible that you’re writing a mystery novel,” Rader-Day said. Rader-Day’s short stories garnered some attention even before she became a well-known mystery author. The fiction author Jodi Picoult selected one of Rader-Day’s stories as the grand prize winner of Good Housekeeping’s first fiction

contest. Although, the budding author never met Picoult she did receive a “very nice email from her.” Unlike many first-time authors, Rader-Day’s first book, “The Black Hour,” was an instant hit. She won the 2015 Anthony Award for Best First Novel and was also a finalist for the 2015 Mary Higgins Clark Award. The publishing process for her first novel wasn’t as difficult as Rader-Day had envisioned. “I don’t want to say [it was] easy, but it was definitely not the uphill climb that I had expected to get

an agent,” Rader-Day said. It wasn’t only finding a publishing agent quickly that contributed to her success. Rader-Day spent one year and a half writing her first draft of “The Black Hour” and then worked for another year on revisions. “I think the inclination is as soon as you got a first draft to start sending it out and seeing if you can get it published... but if you can spend a little more time making sure the book is as good as it can be you’re much more likely to get the help to get it published more quickly,” Rader-Day said. The five-time author is already working on her next novel but can’t say too much about it. It does, however, have a “true crime element to it,” the author said.

A long, international road to home From Thailand to Chicago, mother and daughter make it home to St. Paul’s By TOM HOLMES

ou might say that Marisha Truong and her mother Christine Tupaz have finally arrived home after the bumpy, international, decades-long journey they’ve taken together. Christine, born a citizen of the Philippines, was living in Manila with her Thai husband Surachai Chareonvooti when they decided in 1986 that, although she was ninemonths pregnant, Christine would fly to Chicago for a family event and give birth there, so that her daughter Marisha would be a natural born citizen. Marisha was born in the U.S. The mother and daughter stayed with in-laws until Marisha reached seven-months old and her father Surachai brought them to Pattaya, Thailand. They then spent the next 17 years there, with Marisha growing up with the Thai language and learning English from her mother who, as all Filipino children did in those days, learned to speak English in school. In 2004, her parents broke up. Marisha remembers it as a very dark time in her life, with her and her mother Christine eventually deciding to move to America to start a new life together. The two packed two suitcases full of clothing, and travelled to their new home with very little money. Marisha’s brothers and sisters responded to her request for help by pitching in to support the pair in their transition. “Coming to Chicago was a big culture shock,” she said. “I had to leave everyone I had ever loved. I was at the lowest point in my life.” Compounding the stress is that Christine was going through a deep depression. Ginger, her 30-year-old daughter from a previous marriage and who was living in the U.S., brought her to an Asian social services agency where a psychiatrist was able to provide medical care. But that episode brought back painful memories of a hospitalization in the Philippines when, not only did no one visit her during her stay but, when she was able to go home,

her husband brought his mistress there. “I was mentally tortured,” Christine said as she looked back on those days. Christine’s depression rubbed off on her daughter. “I blamed myself a lot for not being able to take care of her, for not being a good daughter,” she said, adding with tears in her eyes. “I was really lost. I guess I was just hoping for a home.” The two supported one another through the painful time. Then, in 2014 Marisha met Pastor Pongsak Limthongviratn and Matha Janthapaiboon at a club in Lombard, where they played badminton together. Pastor Pongsak and Matha invited her to come by St. Paul Thai Lutheran Church in Forest Park where they play badminton after dinner on Sunday evenings. Marisha accepted the invitation because she loved playing badminton. But what kept Marisha coming back to the white stucco church on Dixon St. was not the talk about religion. She explained, “The Thai people didn’t talk about religion at all. I started to feel very comfortable at the church. I had never met people who seemed so sincere, so loving. I remember wanting to be part of it. It felt almost like home.” Eventually Marisha started coming to the worship services before dinner and the badminton games. One of the people she formed a close relationship with was Sirinya Bunchusanong, or Pup. The two formed a sister-like bond, and Pup would always try to cheer up Marisha when she was feeling depressed. “She would never push religion on me but would tell me Bible stories which I enjoyed,” she said. “We would play Christian songs on the guitar together. One night while we were in Denver on a ski trip she asked me if I wanted to receive Christ, and I said, ‘Yes, if you will help me.’” Marisha converted to Christianity. She also, of course, invited her mother to join her on Sunday afternoons at the Thai church. “Every time I attend worship here,” said Christine, “I feel compassion and the teaching of the Bible so deeply in my heart.” The way Marisha and Christine articulate the change

LONG TRIP: From Thailand to Forest Park, mother and daughter have stayed together. they’ve experienced is to say that they have converted from being Catholic to being Christian, and so, even though they were baptized as infants, they were both baptized again as adults, mother and daughter together, at St. Paul Thai Lutheran Church in 2015. All has not been perfect for Christine and Marisha since that day. Christine has spent some time back in the hospital, but her daughter declared, “I don’t have depression any more. I’m healed. I’ve been restored by the blood of Christ.” Eventually, Marisha joined a band as the lead singer. One evening, she met Giau Minh Truong, a refugee from Vietnam and photographer who was taking pictures of the band. The two were married in 2016. Last year, they had their first son, who was eventually baptized at the church. They plan to teach him Tagalog, Thai, English and Vietnamese languages, and raise him at St. Paul’s. “The feeling I get at St. Paul Thai,” said Christine, “changed my life and the life of my daughter. We keep on coming because of everybody and especially the Lord.”

D91 board approves computer network update $22,000 purchase includes quick data recovery solution By NONA TEPPER Staff Reporter

Forest Park District 91 school board members unanimously approved the purchase of a new online data storage and retention service at a board of education meeting on Aug. 9. Members approved spending $22,115 total on a Unitrends Recovery Backup Appliance, which transfers D91’s data nightly to a storage device; three-year technical support service; one-year subscription license for Unitrends Forever Cloud Retention service, which stores D91’s data off-site; and Unitrends Fast Upload On-Premise Solution from IT Savvy.

“If there were some disaster where we had to have data recovered, what this solution provides is that Unitrends would take all our backup data, put it on a disk and then send it to a server,” Ed Brophy, assistant superintendent of operations, said of the fast upload solution at the board meeting. “If we didn’t have a solution, the amount of time it would take to recover all that data, we would be at their mercy in terms of schedule and availability. So we’re paying for an expedited service if we ever need it,” he added. IT Savvy’s offer of Unitrends technology was the cheapest of the two proposals D91 received, the other coming from CDW Gov-

D91 currently uses Unitrends’ technical support service, which is expiring this year, he said. He mentioned the district is only asking for a one-year subscription to the cloud retention service, since they don’t know how much data they’re going to use. “We didn’t want to pay for multiple years

if we didn’t need the amount of space,” Brophy said at the meeting. During the September board meeting, Brophy said he is going to request to replace computer servers in the administrative building and at the Forest Park Middle School “for a slightly higher dollar amount.” He said D91 has budgeted for both this request, as well as the upcoming request. BIG WEEK Garage Galleries The Garage Galleries art walk celebrates its fifth, and biggest, year, from 2 to 7 p.m. on Aug. 25 with 16 garages and more than 40 artists featured. “It’s been amazing to find out how many artists there are in Forest Park that no one even knew. I want to say there’s probably been at least 60 to 80 people in Forest Park who’ve come out of the woodwork,” said Lin Beribak, a member of the planning committee who will be showcasing her watercolor paintings in one of the garages. From painting to pottery to wearable art, the show will highlight the work of fine artists and artisans, including 16 locals, such as Kimberly Adami-Hasegawa, who runs the Galaxie Safari greeting card business. The planning committee said they expect about 500 people to attend the walk, with garages clustered from 122 Elgin to 1508 Marengo. lium Press published the book, which is a fictional work based on the actual December 1958 blaze that changed school fire codes nationwide. “They were very perceptive readers, very careful readers,” Romano said of the group. “You could tell right away from their comments and their questions, they got it, they understood it. They really listen well to each other. You could tell they had been together for a long time, just how comfortable they were with each other. There wasn’t a lot of talking over each other that sometimes you see.” Romano was the first author to meet with the St. Bernardine’s group, after more than 13 years together. The group talked for about an hour and a half, asking Romano questions about the plot, character development and other perspectives while being served small plates inspired by the novel — bread with strawberry jam, orange slices, Italian cookies and wine, of course. Lin Beribak, one of nine club members, said attendees read a few chapters of the book to make sure they liked his mystery novel before inviting Romano to the group. She noted that some of the members lived in the Chicago area when the fire broke out and remember its impact on the community. Several of the students who went through the experience ended up moving to Forest Park. “It totally took over the news,” Beribak said. “I was in first grade and I definitely remember the stories on TV. There’s a couple of people who are older than I am and absolutely remember the next day going to school, the teacher crying about it, telling the kids what happened.” The St. Bernardine’s book club is now all women but, at least 13 years ago when it started, there were a few male members. “When we read Pride and Prejudice, that’s when the guys dropped out,” Beribak said. Over the years, members have come and gone — with a core group of four who have stayed the entire time — and Beribak said the experience of picking up books they wouldn’t normally read, and learning about groups different from theirs, has held the club together. “We respect each other’s opinions. To sit and listen to one another, even though we don’t agree with their opinion of the book, we can understand their perspective on it,” Beribak said. “I think that contributes to its longevity.” Centuries & Sleuths Bookstore, along with the Forest Park Public Library, carry Where My Body Ends and the World Begins. Flipping out for analogue Bespoke flipbooks brings short videos to life By TIMOTHY INKLEBARGER Staff Reporter

Books, records, even print publications – OK, perhaps that last one is wishful thinking – are coming back in vogue, but video has never been an analogue form of media, so how is that supposed to work? One company has figured out a way. Put down your cell phones and your laptop computers, because the next big viral video might just come from a good old-fashioned flipbook. For those raised on YouTube and Instagram, flipbooks are animated images generated through a small book of photos or drawings you flip through to replicate a moving image. Dexter Cura, owner of Forest Park’s Escape Factor escape room, 7228 Madison St., has been making flipbooks for years. He recently brought his mobile flipbook maker to Oak Park Public Library for a free demonstration at the Oak Park-River Forest Chamber of Commerce’s Business After Hours event.

Cura said the flipbook mini-studio shoots seven seconds of video and creates a 60-page flipbook on the spot. The whole process takes about a minute, he said. Flipbook fans can also send in a digital file and have it converted to analogue for $12. Cura started the company as a photobooth rental service in California about nine years ago. The photo booth could be rented for weddings, parties and other events, but a couple of years into it, he started making flipbooks. Cura recently sold his California-based company, The Laugh Box, but has begun renting out a mobile mini-flipbook studio here in Chicago under the name Bespoke Flipbooks. “I started this thinking I was going to stick with the online service where people send in the videos, but then I realized there is a big market for entertainment and party favors for events,” Cura said. Renting the flipbook studio runs $1,295 for two hours and can produce about 60 flipbooks an hour. Any more time after that will cost $300 an hour.

Lost gun recovered after hit-and-run Police arrived at 11:04 p.m. on the 1100 block of Hannah, Aug. 13, responding to a call about a hit-and-run accident. When they arrived, they learned that after his Infiniti struck another car, the driver jumped out and fled through the alley between Circle and Hannah. When they searched the Infiniti, police found cannabis, a bottle of cognac and an open handgun box with no gun inside. A motorist on the 7200 block of North Roosevelt then flagged down police, saying he saw a man running in the alley between the 1100 blocks of Marengo and Elgin. Officers searched the alley and found Michael Sims, of Westchester, hiding behind garbage cans. Sims ran west through a yard on the 1100 block of Marengo and eventually tried to enter a garage. Police told him to stop and show them his hands, but he ignored them and opened the door to the garage. Officers asked Sims again and he complied. They searched him and found $740 cash, two phones but no gun. Sims told police he threw the handgun in some bushes. After searching the area, police found the gun. Sims received a felony charge for aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, leaving the scene of an accident, possession of cannabis, failure to reduce speed, driving on the sidewalk, and failure to give information after striking an unattended vehicle.

Officers find heroin and two kids in car Police arrived at 7:12 p.m. on Aug. 18 at Thornton’s Gas Station and found a man and woman digging through a parked car. The officer got out of his car, walked toward them and saw the man stuff a rolled up bag into his pocket. While talking to police, the couple started shaking. Then the officer noticed a 6-year-old and 2-year-old girl sitting in the back of the car. The man admitted to carrying heroin, a hypodermic needle and cooker in his pocket. The woman told police she had just been picked up from Gateway Addiction Center in Chicago, and said she had no idea the man had heroin on him. “You said you were just buying weed,” she yelled at the man. Police reached out to the children’s biological father to inform him of the incident, and told the woman to expect a call from the Department of Children and Family Services. Since she had no contraband on her, she was released with her daughters. The man told police he met the woman through Narcotics Anonymous, and that afternoon she asked him to drive her to Chicago to buy some weed. Instead he bought $100 worth of heroin. He was charged with possession of a controlled substance.

Car stolen from 7-11 A man’s Buick was stolen from 7-11 at 4:52 a.m. on Aug. 19. The victim said he left his car running while he went inside 205 Harlem to make a quick purchase.

BB-gun shot Between 5:30 p.m. on Aug. 10 and 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 13, someone shot two double-paned windows in the 100 block of Harlem. According to the police report, it looked as though the windows were shot with a BB or pellet gun.

Burglars lift license plate Sometime between 2:30 and 8 p.m. on Aug. 13, someone stole a license plate from a Hyundai parked on the 1000 block of Desplaines.

4:45 p.m. on Aug. 13 and 6:30 a.m. on Aug. 14, someone scratched a Nissan parked on the 7300 block of Circle, the scratch running the length of the car. ■■Sometime between 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 11 and 2:30 a.m. on Aug. 12, someone keyed a Ford Fusion parked on the 7400 block of Madison.

Juveniles try to break into Altenheim Police found cannabis on two juveniles trying to break into the Altenheim property at 4:37 p.m. on Aug. 15. Officers received calls of drinking and a disturbance at 7824 Madison St. When they arrived, they found two 16-year-olds trying to enter the abandoned building through a wood panel. Officers searched the boys and found suspected cannabis on them. They were cited for trespassing, possession of cannabis, and possession of drug paraphernalia. These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Forest Park Police Department, Aug. 13-19, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

Calderone’s creations

C

an the efforts to stymie opponents of video gaming in Forest Park get any more repulsive? Last week the Review reported in print on the Facebook tirade of sitting Commissioner Tom Mannix against the wives of two vocal gaming foes, women who have played no public role in this worthy debate. Last Thursday, the Review posted the update that the emails used by Mannix to completely, unfairly slime one of those women, a professional employee of the Cook County Clerk, were obtained via a FOIA request by Mark Hosty, a current Forest Park bar manager, a former village commissioner, the person who repeatedly blocked a binding vote on gaming by clogging earlier ballots with nonsense referendums, and, by the way, Mannix’s partner in a real estate venture. And did we mention that Mannix completely distorted the content of those emails in his Facebook vilification of this couple? Their exchange had nothing to do with video gaming but instead referenced participating with the clerk’s office in a gay pride parade. Here we have two elected officials, one current, one repudiated for reelection by voters, aggressively and publicly turning against Forest Park residents, and now their spouses, only because those citizens exercised their right to oppose a government action involving video gaming. At last week’s village council meeting, Mayor Anthony Calderone, who brought these two miscreants to of office, mildly slapped Mannix’s wrist but then played the notorious false equivalency card by suggesting that venal campaign flyers from earlier years somehow justified current actions. The equivalence we’d point out is that, during Calderone’s overlong tenure as mayor, it’s Forest Park’s politics that have gone into the gutter. The specter of our national political shame has parallels in our hometown. That’s pathetic and it starts with Anthony Calderone.

Hello, bar owners

Suppose you own a bar or restaurant in Forest Park. You’ve added video gaming and it has plumped your bottom line while not offending the regulars. Likely means you want local voters to allow gaming to continue when it comes to a binding vote in November. So why are you sitting by silently and letting your hardwon reputations be brought low by the likes of Healy’s Mark Hosty, who hasn’t met a political dirty trick that he hasn’t embraced, or mega-bar owner Marty Sorice, who has turned Facebook into scorched earth. We’ll give leeway to O’Sullivan’s James Watts, who has played legal hardball but at least stayed in legal lanes. Seventy days until an election that will potentially impact your business. Who among you is going to step up and repudiate the tactics and the tone of these seeming leaders of your local industry? We’ve said before that there is a case to be made in Forest Park for video gaming if only someone would make it respectfully and not at the expense of a worthy opposition.

Polarization and comfort zones

few weeks ago I watched two women dressed in black from head to toe playing with their young children in the shallow end of the Forest Park pool. I assumed they were Muslim, but I was too self-conscious to ask. What I also remember feeling is admiration for these women whom everyone else couldn’t help but notice. I know what it’s like to stick out. Whenever I’m in Thailand I’m conscious of sometimes being the only farang (white guy) in the neighborhood. The same is true at other times when I don’t look like everyone else. But these two women seemed to be having a great time with their kids in the water. They seemed to be so at ease, almost oblivious to the fact that the couple hundred others in the pool were dressed in a lot less clothing and had a lot more skin showing. When I was a boy in the 1950s, the narrative we were taught was that America is a melting pot, that all of us, except Native Americans, came to this country as immigrants with different languages, religions and customs, but we assimilated or kind of melted together into “Americans.” The narrative began to change in the 1960s. The metaphor gradually replacing the melting pot was that of the tossed salad, i.e. one salad with each ingredient retaining its own characteristics and identity. So here were these two Muslim women. Call them the carrots or the tomatoes in the salad that day. They both stuck out and fit in at the same time. But the more I thought about it, I recalled that on the same day I saw two very pregnant women wearing bikinis and several WSSRA clients doing their own behavioral thing — call them the cucumbers and croutons — in that same pool/ salad without anyone thinking they did not belong. And here I was trudging toward the lap lanes with my walker. Years ago now, the first time I used my walker at the pool, I felt like everyone was looking at me. When you are a new ingredient in the tossed salad, there’s always going to be the “first time.” There will always be the first time you get thrown into the salad bowl and the other ingredients have to decide if your presence is OK with them. On Aug. 12, many people, especially in our nation’s capital, were anxious that a Charlottesville-like tragedy would

be repeated when white supremacists demonstrated. Turns out, only 25 of them showed up. Seems to me that our national salad is learning to let new ingredients be themselves while blending rather than melting in. Those Muslim women, dressed in black from head to toe, were taking the biggest risk that day at the pool — at least at first — but thanks to an evolving narrative in this little town, no one — except maybe me — thought it was a big deal. When I came to town in 1982, having black and white kids together in the pool was a big deal. It was the new normal. Now it’s just the normal. Several years ago, I decided to take one small step in building bridges instead of walls by going to have what’s left of my hair cut at a black barbershop. I was self-conscious about being the only white guy in the place. Now I’m just Tom. I’m also a white guy, a Lutheran, and a Cubs fan. Jeff, the owner, doesn’t expect me to be like him. We do share a lot in common, which helps us connect, but it’s our differences that we share in the stories we tell each other that makes the relationship fun. Not all stories of venturing out of comfort zones have happy endings, of course. But one of the reasons our nation is polarized is that, more and more, we are moving into lifestyle enclaves in which everyone thinks alike, or at least keeps their mouth shut if they are different. So here is the test of us in Forest Park, a village in which 85 percent of us voted for Hillary in the last election. How will we react if an outspoken Trump voter wants to be tossed into our salad? We already have lots of brown and black folks and lot of LGBTQs spicing up the mix, so we’ve gotten used to that. But a Trump voter?! In two months we’re going to vote on video gambling. Are we willing to cross over to the other side, not to convince them that they should see it our way (which, of course, is the right way!) but simply to accept them as they are, to see how the “opposition” might be integrated into a healthy, tasty mix? By the way, that owner of the black barbershop where I felt uncomfortable and self-conscious the first time I walked in? He and I are going camping together in October.

Forest Park politics dive deeper into the dumpster

At the Village Council meeting on August 13th citizens gathered to speak out against vile tactics used by a sitting commissioner against his constituents, but better put: his neighbors. We’re a small enough town that you aren’t blindly lashing out against a group of people that you haven’t talked to or know their faces: In Forest Park these are your neighbors. Going after, by doxing and slandering, your neighbors is beyond the pale. This was once left only to the political victims of Mayor Calderone, with the help of his loyal henchman, Commissioner Mannix. This reestablishes a new low – these tactics being used on Forest Park residents whose only ‘crime’ was participating in democracy by passing a petition, or even worse, being the spouse of one of those people (an unbelievable low). I firmly believe this is a warning shot to all of those who are considering running and participating in democracy in our upcoming elections. Do not let the bullies win. At the council meeting I spoke out about all

Vote no on prohibition The long back-and-forth wrangling on a vote for legal video gaming in Forest Park is over and voters will have the final say in November. I strongly encourage every Forest Park resident to join me in voting NO on the question of prohibiting video gaming in local businesses. Licensed video gaming came to Forest Park in 2016. In has been in place for nearly two years and in that time the only thing that has changed is there are a few more dollars in our local economy. Allowing a few gaming machines in restaurants and bars has not increased crime and has not changed the look or the quality of life in Forest Park. What it has done is make several of our locally owned businesses a little more stable and allowed to reinvest that money into creating jobs and making improvements. Two years ago a few vocal critics told us that the sky would fall if video gaming were allowed in Forest Park. The truth? The result of allowing gaming is that responsible adults are allowed to enjoy the games, local businesses and our Village are financially stronger. Vote NO on prohibition.

of the tactics used by Calderone in the last municipal election, and that as a long-time political associate of Mannix’s (they were on 2 slates together) the Mayor is perfectly fine with these tactics. He is. I also mentioned that the attacks against myself and some of my supporters not only came from campaign associates, but directly from his family. After the council meeting, waiting for me as soon as I exited the door of village hall, was one of those people – I didn’t mention him by name but he must have a guilty conscience. The Mayor’s cousin, Nick Tricoci, immediately got about an inch from my face and started yelling that ‘how dare I bring him up’ and implying that I was lying. Well, I still have the screen shots and the Review even mentions the attacks in an article from April 14th, 2015 “Mostly Feisty, A Little Contrite, Calderone Assesses Election,” where the mayor describes Mr. Tricoci’s attacks as ‘he may have been a little over-excited’. On this past Monday, in what the Review described as ‘an altercation’ (to me an altercation implies the two parties being

somewhat willful participants, I was walking away the whole time and telling him I would not engage him and reminded him of a few citizens he went after whose only ‘crime’ was helping my campaign) Mr. Tricoci followed me out into the parking lot and continued to yell lies and debunked rumors. Thankfully Commissioner Byrnes was there, as was Chief Aftanas, to finally defuse the attack. I’m sure if this gets published we will see the familiar family names of Nick Tricoci and other members of the Mayor’s family attacking me, as they do whenever I question something on social media – and of course not on the issues or disagreements over how I voted on the council. It will be personal attacks rooted in rumor and debunked nonsense. They will be vicious. You will also see fake Facebook profiles that only pop up around election time and viciously attack opponents of the mayor and his slate, or as it looks like now – referendum opposition. Attempting silence through intimidation. Can we finally say enough to this? I sure

The long struggle to get a vote on video gambling There has never been a single instance that I can find where video gambling has been legalized because the public demanded it. In 2009, when the Illinois legislature rushed through the Video Gaming Act within 24 hours of it being introduced, a Chicago Tribune poll showed that 58% of Illinois citizens opposed video gambling being legalized. Why then did the legislation breeze though the legislature with less examination than a bill honoring motherhood, veterans or the U.S. flag? Because the people who profit the most from video gambling have lots of campaign contributions to give out. And because legislators prefer an easy reliance on gambling revenue (even if counter-balanced or negated by social costs) to the difficult choice of cutting spending and/or raising taxes. Given the lack of public support video gambling has received, and the windfall profits involved for operators, it is no small wonder that the Video Gaming Act makes it immeasurably harder to get a video gambling ban on the ballot than any other referendum. To ban video gambling in Cook County would take 250,000 signatures. To run for Cook County Commissioner only requires 5,000 signatures. To get the issue of video gambling on the ballot here in Forest Park actually took more signatures than were received by both mayoral candidates in our last Village election combined. This is a ridiculously--and

perhaps unconstitutionally--high burden for petitioners to reach. Yet, Forest Parkers determined to bring democracy to our little hamlet were able to meet this burden. In all honesty, they met it twice. But thanks to the inherently biased nature of the Electoral Board here (where the Electoral Board consists of the Mayor, a Council member and the Village Clerk) they were denied the ballot on questionable grounds and forced to collect the required signatures a second time. And battle the legal machinations of the pro-gambling lobby all the way up to the Illinois Supreme Court. Just to secure a vote! We are the first municipality to succeed in overcoming the obstacles set up by the gambling lobby and bring this to a vote. And I am proud of my own small role in that, and proud of all my fellow volunteers. The proponents of video gambling in Forest Park--an unseemly alliance of bar owners and local politicians--were willing to harass and intimidate private residents, attempt to dig up dirt on them through FOIA requests, and attack their family members, all just to prevent Forest Parkers from voting. Now it’s your turn to let them know how you feel about that. For the sake of our democracy and the good of our Village, I urge citizens to Vote Yes to reinstate the ban on video gambling. American Ninja Warrior from page 1 can Ninja Warrior, a TV show that features competitors from across the country attempting to complete an obstacle course that comprises sliding steps, shaking giant balls, rings of different shapes and much, much more. Competitors aim to advance to the national finals on the Las Vegas Strip and become an “American Ninja Warrior.” After 10 seasons, and 142 episodes, only two competitors have so far ever successfully completed the obstacle course, winning the $1 million grand prize. This season, brother and sister Nikkilette and Mike Wright both competed on the show, with Nikkilette in Los Angeles and Mike in Indianapolis, participating for the second time. Nikkilette fell in the first round, while Mike advanced to Las Vegas. Watch him compete at 7 p.m. on NBC on Aug. 27. “I’m definitely really proud of them; they’re really nice kids and that’s what you as a parent hope for,” said Kristina Wright, longtime varsity gymnastics coach at Oak Park and River Forest High School. “They’re taking these journeys and personal risks in life. I just hope when other kids see that, they think, ‘I might try to do this.’” Growing up on the 200 block of Circle in Forest Park, Mike Wright remembers living in his mom’s gym, going there after Forest Park Middle School and flipping from stacks of mats. By the time he got to St. Joseph’s High School in Westchester, he had given up his amateur gymnastics career and gotten into diving. He also worked his first job at Brown Cow Ice Cream Parlor, where he was part of the first class of employees at the now household name in Forest Park. “If we made mistakes making an ice cream sundae, I would save it in the freezer and eat it later,” Wright said, laughing. “I’d accidentally make mistakes all the time.”

After graduating from St. Joe’s, Mike attended the University of Tennessee, where his diving prowess won him the title of team captain, U.S. All-American, and the 2010 one-meter title at the USA Diving Winter National Championships. Two years later, he placed 12th at the U.S. Olympic Trials. He now works as Tennessee diving coach. About three years ago, one of his students mentioned he would make a good American Ninja Warrior. He didn’t think much about the show until last year when Nikkilette texted him saying she was interested in trying out for it. “We decided to kind of work together, keep each other accountable, and train for the show,” Mike said. “We both just had the mindset, ‘Hey why not go all out? If we’re going to commit to it and if we don’t get picked, it’s still a good way to get in shape.’” The two face-timed for two months about their workouts, building a friendly rivalry and agreeing that if they were going to compete, they had to give it 100 percent. Mike looked at the obstacle course from the last season and wrote himself workouts, practicing hanging from a bar, doing pull ups and swinging on the rings. He said he worked out twice a day, six days a week, until the show aired in June. He decided to compete in a checkered orange and navy speedo, the colors of Tennessee, to honor his diving career and offer kids a message of acceptance — that there is no one, stereotypical tough-guy approach to being an athlete. His attire has gotten him the nickname “The Speedo Ninja,” and he’s now one of the most popular characters on the show. His mother Kristina Wright drove to and from Indianapolis both nights to watch him compete. “Mike was not someone who was comfortable in speedos at first,” she said. “But he found you have to be comfortable in your skin. It’s very cool; it’s such a different backstory and important message.” After her parents divorced, Nikkilette moved to Oak Park to stay with her dad and attend OPRF High School. There she gave up gymnastics and tried out for basketball, a newbie but a natural on the court, excelling to the point that she received a full scholarship to Robert Morris University to play on their team. She graduated from Robert Morris and went on to ball semi-professionally for the Global Women’s Basketball Association. Two years ago, she took a class in stunt acting in Chicago. She has since moved out to Los Angeles and performed as a stunt woman in This is Us, Luke Cage and an upcoming movie Megladon. “I’m living the dream now,” she said. As a stunt woman, Nikkilette said she already was in decent shape. But after committing to try out for the TV show with her brother, she changed up her workouts, focusing more on hand grip strength and rock climbing. She found out in February she had been chosen to compete on the show. She said Mike’s experience competing helped her remember to stay calm and get comfortable on set, particularly since they film the show at night so they have the consistency of the dark sky. She showed up at 9 p.m. to run the course, checked in around 11 p.m. and then ran the course around 3:30 a.m. “All the lights, the camera and the crowd, it can be overwhelming,” she said. “I just remembered to get up there, and give it my all.
