After posting a controversial comment on Facebook the night of Aug. 9, Village Commissioner Thomas Mannix, in

a Monday interview with the Forest Park Review, called his tone “slightly harsh” but said he stands by the post, which called out four residents and their families, alleging they have threatened Mannix and his family, questioned their employment, and even suggested that one might hurt his dog.

By day, Don Shanahan, 38, is a middle school teacher at Daystar School in the South Loop of Chicago. By night, he turns into a press-credentialed film critic.

The Forest Park resident of four years says he has always been interested in films but he originally dreamt of being a journalist as a teenager.

“I wanted to be Clark Kent,” Shanahan said with a laugh.

Instead, he decided upon teaching after a stint as a lifeguard during high school where he helped teach children and adults to swim.

Rockin’ out with Rainbow Gummies

here’s a rising young band opening for The Redmonds on Aug. 21 at Groovin’ in the Grove.

They call themselves 24/7 because they rock out whenever they can. The six members range in age from 7 to 16, making them the youngest band to ever perform at the summer concert series. They are promising a solid set, including a surprise new song.

The band started two years ago, as a group of kids learning the ukulele on a front porch. The original members included Cassidy Brown, 11; Ginny Redmond, 10; and Oliver Hosfield, 7. Oliver may be the youngest of the bunch but he’s been the most influential. He came up with the band’s name and composed their first original song, “I Like to Rock.”

The trio recruited other kids who like to rock, including Jack Amberg, 13, on lead guitar; Lizzie Kowalski 16, on alto and baritone sax; and Maggie Redmond on bass.

Mike Redmond is the band’s director. He brings structure, discipline and passion to their weekly rehearsals. They also prac-

tice before playing venues like FitzGerald’s, The Park and the Forest Park Public Library.

Some of these have been paying gigs, with the band members blowing the proceeds at the Dollar Store. When asked how they wanted their green room stocked prior to taking the stage, they specified Rainbow Gummies, Mountain Dew and Pixie Sticks. Their set currently consists of six songs, featuring such rockers as “Riptide,” “Feel it Still,” and “Hey Jude.”

The band’s sweet vocals are supplied by Maggie and Cassidy. Jack is a powerhouse on guitar and Lizzie’s baritone sax forms a rock solid foundation with Ginny on drums.

The members admit, though, that the band’s age gap can make the music challenging.

Their songs have to be tailored to musicians who have very different skill levels. But everyone in 24/7 is working hard to improve.

In one year, Cassidy has progressed from plunking away at a ukulele to strumming a guitar while she sings. Mike likens her to a “mini-Joni Mitchell.” Jack practices his guitar for three hours a day. He also

moonlights with the group led by his father, the Back of the Hand Band. Lizzie takes lessons on sax, while band members learn clarinet, trombone and trumpet at school.

Apart from their growing musical maturity, playing in 24/7 has helped the members in other ways. Performing in front of crowds has given them confidence and poise. Their courage is on display every time they take the stage. They are also inspiring their classmates to learn music.

Mike provides a safe environment, where they can play music out of joy, rather than fear. The band members feed off each other’s energy. They have also been inspired by their parents. Jack’s dad, John, has been teaching him chords since he was 10. Ginny and Maggie grew up watching their parents perform.

Singing in public is part of their DNA. The band wants to progress past playing pop songs to more sophisticated material.

Lizzie, for example, loves jazz and uses her alto sax to improvise. Oliver continues to be the band’s creative force while rocking out on ukulele.

Village TIF revenue down year over year Revenue down 120 percent year over year, likely because village closed a TIF

Forest Park’s tax-increment financing (TIF) districts generated $1.84 million in revenue in 2017, down from $2.03 million a year earlier, according to the annual report on Chicago area TIFs produced by Cook County Clerk David Orr’s office. The village’s decline could be the result of closing the Forest Park Plaza TIF this year. During its 23-year lifetime, the Plaza TIF generated $13.36 million.

Following creation of a TIF district, the equalized assessed valuation (EAV) of the property is frozen for taxing bodies whose boundaries include the district. Any property tax revenue generated by the increased EAV goes into the TIF fund to be spent on improvements in the district, generally infrastructure.

TIF revenue accounts for approximately 4 percent of property tax billed in the suburbs and, on average, 1 in 22 suburban properties are in a TIF, according to the clerk’s report.

Orr has frequently called for increased transparency in regards to the creation and

revenue generated from TIFs, including giving the public a greater say in how TIF dollars are spent.

“TIFs can be an effective economic tool if used responsibly,” Orr said in a statement.

“But TIF generated revenue flies under the radar of many taxpayers who don’t realize they’re paying additional taxes without the same oversight as traditional property taxes.”

There are currently three TIFs in Forest Park: at Brown St. Station and Harlem Ave.; down the Roosevelt Road Corridor; and at Roosevelt Road and Hannah Ave., which gifted Living Fresh Market up to $450,000 in TIF funds earlier this year. So far, the TIF at Roosevelt and Hannah is the most lucrative, started in 2002 and generating $11.63 million; the TIF at Roosevelt Road Corridor is the least lucrative. Started in 2015, it is the newest of the three TIFs and has so far raked in $616,372.

“Unless a municipality can demonstrate ongoing blight, taxpayers should not be required to continue funding additional development,” Orr said in a statement. “Sunset provisions would ensure projects terminate after project goals are achieved.”

Forest Park’s three TIFs join 38 total TIF districts in Proviso Township, which brought in approximately $21.5 million in revenue in 2017, essentially on par with the total in 2016, when Proviso’s taxing districts brought in $21.1 million in revenue.

Some of that lost revenue was offset by the creation of two new TIFs in Proviso Township, both located in LaGrange Park, and the fact that most TIFs in the township experienced revenue bumps from 2016 to 2017.

Total TIF revenue for Cook County totaled around $1 billion in 2017, a nearly 20 percent increase over 2016, when total revenue was around $852,000. The total 2017 revenue of all 143 TIFs located in Chicago was around $660 million while the total revenue for the 304 TIFs in suburban Cook County was around $344 million.

In his report, Orr noted that the 18.4 percent total increase of all suburban TIFs in Cook County was driven largely by increased taxable values that resulted from a 5 percent increase in the state equalizer and reassessments in the southern suburbs.

Overnight parking allowed at Roos Center lot Permit required, cars must leave by 8 a.m.

Local residents have another overnight parking option following action by the Forest Park Village Council, Aug. 13.

With Commissioners Rachel Entler and Dan Novak absent, the council voted 3-0 to allow overnight parking in the lot adjacent to the Park District of Forest Park’s new Roos Recreation Center, 7329 Harrison St., for those who purchase permits.

The 30-space lot is at 700 Hannah Ave. on village-owned property on the east side of the facility.

The lot is available for park district use at no charge during the day but permits will be required to park there overnight. Vehicles still in the lot after 8 a.m. are subject to ticketing.

According to Village Administrator Tim Gillian, when negotiating an intergovernmental agreement regarding the development of the property, the village agreed to allow the park district to use the parking lot during the day at no charge.

Gillian also said the lot might not be available for overnight parking at 8 p.m. if an event or activity is taking place at the center, noting people “might have to wait.”

He also said the only option is an overnight permit. Previously, overnight parking was not allowed.

Overnight parking permits are available for $40 per month in the clerk’s office in village hall, 517 Desplaines Ave. The 15,000-square-foot Roos Center includes an indoor basketball court, fitness center, walking track and nearby park space. Costing nearly $6 million, it opened in May following 10 months of construction.

Village settles cops’ third excessive force suit in past year Three other cases still pending in U.S. District Court

The village has agreed to pay $38,000 to settle another federal lawsuit against the village and six Forest Park police, according to an agreement obtained by the Forest Park Review through a Freedom of Information Act request. This is at least the third lawsuit against police the village has settled since October of 2017, with total settlement costs now totaling at least $233,900. Three other cases are pending in U.S. District Court, all alleging excessive force by Forest Park police.

“Neither this release nor any of its terms, conditions or provisions constitute an admission of liability of wrongdoing on the part of any of the parties,” reads the settlement agreement between the village and plaintiff Trumell Lee. Lee filed the lawsuit in November of 2017 in U.S. District Court – Northern District Illinois.

In the early morning of Nov. 3, 2017, police responded to a call that Lee and friends were fighting at the intersection of Circle Avenue and Jackson Boulevard, according to a police report filed at that time. Officers looked up Lee’s name in their internal database and found he had an active warrant from DuPage County for failing to appear in court about a DUI charge, according to the police report.

Forest Park Officer Nicholas Defors began screaming that Lee was going to jail, according to the lawsuit. Lee reportedly placed his hands behind his back and waited to be handcuffed. Defors put the handcuffs on Lee, then allegedly put him in a chokehold from behind, according to the complaint.

The police report said the officer was trying to search Lee. Lee blacked out and, when he came to, found himself on his knees on the pavement, according to the suit. Police transported him to the police station, booked him on the warrant and charged him with resist-

ing arrest and illegal transportation of alcohol, the police report said. The department later decided not to prosecute the charges against Lee, and opened an Internal Affairs Division investigation into Defors’ conduct, according to the lawsuit.

Once Lee was released, he visited a hospital emergency room, the complaint said.

Unlike at least two previous settlement agreements that have been discussed publicly in Forest Park Village Council meetings, the agreement between Lee and the village was completed privately on June 25. Police Chief Thomas Aftanas said he didn’t know why the agreement wasn’t discussed at a council meeting, noting that settlements are usually discussed in closed session. Village Administrator Tim Gillian did not respond to an interview request.

Officers DeFors, Nicholas Diano, Jose Flores, Donald Bolton, Josh Jennett and Robert Kendall were named as defendants.

Payment includes attorneys’ fees and court

costs, and the agreement did not say the village’s insurer covered the cost. Lee had until Aug. 1 to dismiss his complaint.

Meanwhile, there are three other cases pending in U.S. District Court alleging excessive force by Forest Park police.

In February 2018, the family of Marco Gomez alleged that Forest Park police fatally shot Gomez “without cause or provocation” after they caught him in a stolen car the year before. The same month, plaintiff Giovanni LaGioia filed a federal lawsuit alleging a local police officer roughly searched him during a traffic stop in December 2017.

In June 2017, a Forest Park man alleged that a Forest Park police officer knocked his teeth out during a 2015 incident. The village has a settlement conference for this incident scheduled in court on Aug. 14.

“The parties believe that with the Court’s assistance, a settlement may be feasible,” reads an action filed by the plaintiff on Aug. 7.

Hundreds mourn beloved East coach who ‘bled royal blue’

Hundreds of people packed the auditorium at Proviso East High School, 807 S. 1st Ave. in Maywood, on Aug. 11 to celebrate the life of Tiffany Battle, 33, a beloved dance coach at the school who died on Aug. 3 from cervical cancer.

Battle, who graduated from Proviso East in 2003, was the coach of the Pirateers, the high school’s competitive dance team, and a board member of Gate Way Music and Arts — a Maywood nonprofit that offers musical education to local young people.

Jeremy Horn, who graduated with Battle, described the lifelong dancer as “a beautiful soul” who “bled royal blue and always showed nothing but the best,” echoing Proviso Township High School District 209’s motto.

Growing up, Battle honed her chops at Mr. Ernie’s Flip, Flop & Fly and Stairway of the Stars Dance Studio. She cultivated her soul at her Downers Grove church, But God Ministries, where she often brought her Pirateers.

During her eulogy, Tracey Young, Battle’s pastor, shared an anecdote that she said captured the lifelong dancer’s essence. Young said that last year she went to visit Battle days before she was scheduled to have surgery.

“I wanted to go over and talk to her just to see where she was mentally, physically and spiritually,” Young said. “I received something that truly blessed my soul.”

Young said that she was prepared to offer her parishioner a “kiss” and a “listening ear” for what the pastor thought would be the laments of a young woman in her prime justifiably angry with what was happening to her.

“I thought Tiffany was going to share with me that she

And then, Young said, Battle told her something “that blew” her mind and left her “speechless.”

“Tiffany says to me, ‘Pastor Tracey, if something should happen to me, ‘I want you to have my heart,’” the pastor re-

Young delivered Battle’s eulogy while wearing what looked like a purse. It was actually a left ventricular assist device — a mechanical pump that’s battery-operated and surgically implanted for patients with heart failure.

“I have been diagnosed with end stage heart failure and I’m in need of a transplant,” Young said. “What you see here has been beating my heart for the last six years. On paper, I should be dead. That’s why my passion is so great for God. Here [Tiffany] is in excruciating pain, suffering, but instead of thinking about herself, she was thinking about me.”

Young said that she quickly waived the offer.

“I said, ‘Baby girl, it’s little old you and big old me. I know your heart is big, but it’s not going to fit up in here,” she said, prompting laughter from the audience. “But the Holy Spirit said to me, ‘Why do you think it was so easy for her to say that?’”

Young cited Ezekiel 36:26 — “A new heart also will I give you and a new spirit will I put within you and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh and I will give you a heart of flesh.”

“The reason why it was so easy for Sister Tiffany to say this to me is because she wasn’t saying it with a natural heart, she was saying it with God’s heart,” Young said, before referencing Battle’s love of the Pirateers and her alma mater.

“This was the best place for this service to be held,” the pastor said, “because this is where Tiffany’s heart was. It was here at this school. It was here among these children.”

Village Council meeting gets testy At the Forest Park Village Council meeting on Aug. 13, Jordan Kuehn, who heads Let Forest Park Vote, said Commissioner Tom Mannix pulled him aside before the meeting and apologized to him privately for the comments he made about him on Facebook.

Six residents spoke during the public comment portion of the meeting, including former mayoral candidate/village commissioner Chris Harris, who said “having been a victim of doxing, slander and even physical threats, just to name a few, by not only associates of the mayor [Anthony Calderone] but also his family members, I think we can see there is a wink and a nod that it’s OK from the top.”

At the meeting, Mayor Calderone said he did not approve of Mannix’s comments; believed it would be best for the village if pro- and anti-video gamers stayed silent on the matter until after the Nov. 8 vote; and compared Mannix’s comments about residents to a negative campaign flier circulated three years ago that called Mayor Calderone “corrupt.”

After the council meeting, Harris was involved in an altercation in the village hall parking lot with someone who is reportedly a member of Calderone’s family.

“I know on some folks’ minds they’re thinking that we can take action up here to excuse Commissioner Mannix as an elected official. That’s simply not possible. It’s not legal; you simply can’t do it,” Calderone said.

He added: “It takes two to tango. Now this is not in defense of Commissioner Mannix because he never should have said any of the things, but I think that if each and every one of us take a deep, deep look into the ongoing conversations that are happening mostly with regard to video gaming, and all of the arrows that are being thrown, no matter how large or how small, I really think the best thing that could be done for the village of Forest Park is for those who are in support of it and those who are against to just take a breather. OK? I don’t see any benefit of any more further comment.”

“They were given to me in a paper file. … I did not ask for them, did not seek them out, did not make any effort to go find them or anything,” Mannix said of the purported emails, declining to name who showed them to him. The Cook County Clerk has not yet responded to a Freedom of Information Act request by the Forest Park Review about what, if any, public information requests have been made regarding Ardinger’s wife.

Ardinger said his wife had nothing to do with the effort to vote on video gaming in Forest Park. He believes Mannix targeted him because he has repeatedly, and publicly, called for the village to showcase an economic development plan that explains how video gaming benefits everyone in the village.

“He feels that by silencing the messenger, he can make the message go away,” Ardinger said in an email.

Garage culture transforms alleys into galleries Fifth year for art walk is Aug. 25

The Garage Galleries art walk celebrates its fifth, and biggest, year, from 2 to 7 p.m. on Aug. 25 with 16 garages and more than 40 artists featured.

“It’s been amazing to find out how many artists there are in Forest Park that no one even knew. I want to say there’s probably been at least 60 to 80 people in Forest Park who’ve come out of the woodwork,” said Lin Beribak, a member of the planning committee who will be showcasing her watercolor paintings in one of the garages.

From painting to pottery to wearable art, the show will highlight the work of fine artists and artisans, including 16 locals, such as Kimberly Adami-Hasegawa, who runs the Galaxie Safari greeting card business. The planning committee said they expect about 500 people to attend the walk, with garages clustered from 122 Elgin to 1508 Marengo.

planning committee. The work really picked up in June when the website launched and the application period opened. For the first

time, Garage Galleries had so many artists apply from Forest Park, Oak Park, River Forest and beyond that they had to create a waiting list.

Artists will be at the site of their garage gallery during the walk to discuss their work with attendees.

“It really is a way parents can introduce kids to art in a very casual, not an ‘It’s a gallery, you can’t touch this’ or ‘Oh, you have to be quiet,’ none of that kind of thing,” said Susan Cross, a member of the planning committee. “I think it’s very family friendly and I think it is a good way to get people, who would never walk into an art gallery, exposed to art.”

The Kiwanis Club of Forest Park donated funds, used to print fliers. Other than that, all costs of funding the event have come out of pocket from organizers or were donated by businesses and residents. Attendees can pick up printed maps of the garage route the day of the event at Creativita, 7512 Madison St., or visit the website at tinyurl.com/GarageGalleries for online versions of the maps.

“This is completely volunteer-driven; that is really just something we’re doing because we think it’s a good idea,” said Andrea DiFebo, a member of the planning committee.

Plalking: Good, clean fun in Forest Park Build relationships, tell stories and, of course, Pick up Litter while Walking

Etta Worthington likes to multitask. The Forest Parker is working on some screen plays, runs an Airbnb, helps her daughter Ashley with her catering business, sends out weekly action items for her Western Front Resist advocacy group and has taught at the college level. But Worthington’s latest venture into doing more than one task at the same time is called plalking.

“A week or so ago two of us were picking up litter along a street in town and putting it in plastic grocery bags when two grade school age girls looked at us as if to say, ‘What are these silly old ladies doing?’” Worthington said. “So I told them that we’re plalking, i.e. Picking up Litter while Walking.”

When the girls asked if we were being paid to do it, Worthington smiled and replied, “No, we’re doing this because we want to. It’s good exercise and it helps the community.”

According to an online site called Tree Hugger, what is becoming something of an international movement began in Sweden as plogging, or Picking up Litter while Jogging. When Worthington’s daughter Ashley suggested that mother and daughter try plogging last April, they became frustrated because they were stopping so often to pick up trash that they didn’t do much actual jogging.

Worthington kept track on one outing and found she stopped to pick up litter 25 times in just one block. The

duo soon transitioned to plalking.

Now there are nine plalkers in Forest Park. Worthington dreams of holding a monthly event where a large group of residents get together and radiate over parts of the village, like they did on Earth Day. Prospective plalkers should visit the “Forest Park Plalking Group” page on Facebook.

When she goes on her weekly plalk, Worthington often calls up another plalker like Skye Lavin, who works as manager of adult services at the Forest Park Public Library.

They pick up a used plastic grocery bag, put on gloves and set out. When the bag is full, they dump the contents in one of the public waste receptacles around town and continue.

Lavin laughed and said that so far they haven’t found anything valuable—only things like empty liquor bottles, fast food wrappers, cigarette butts, straws, empty Starbucks cups. . . . Worthington said the two of them once found a full beer bottle and decided to leave it “for someone who needs it.”

As that remark reveals, Worthington takes her advocacy work seriously but not herself.

“My approach to activism,” she explained, “is very positive. We’re doing good things and I’m going to have fun doing it.”

In that regard, she suggested that plalking can be a fun family event. She imagined parents and kids going out and having fun seeing who can pick up the most trash or who finds the most interesting litter.

Not only does Worthington multitask by simultaneously walking and picking up litter, she sees the outings as also a

time to build relationships or plan advocacy meetings.

“I get a little exercise, do something good for the earth and also have time to share stories,” she said, adding: “Relationship building is important. Skye and I talk about our similar upbringings while we plalk. I think that storytelling is an important part of society that maybe we leave to emojis too often.”

SHANAHAN

Every movie has a lesson from page 1 “I really enjoyed the chance to help somebody overcome a fear...it [teaching] kind of grabbed me a little more, as much as it’s fun to write, this was impactful,” Shanahan said.

But he didn’t leave journalism or films behind entirely after high school.

In college, Shanahan worked for his school’s newspaper. He also worked at a video store and described himself as the “movie nerd friend” everyone has. Shanahan wrote film reviews throughout college.

When he graduated and became a teacher, Shanahan said he didn’t have time to write film criticism anymore. “I didn’t have an outlet to do that anymore so for about seven years after college I watched movies but I didn’t write,” he said.

Around 2009, Shanahan said he discovered Facebook and reconnected with old high school and college friends. Many of them asked if he still “did that movie stuff.”

He told them he no longer had time for it.

His friends suggested he start a blog and start posting reviews there.

“At the time, I’m like what the heck is a blog?” Shanahan said.

The blog he started almost 10 years ago is now the film review website “Every Movie Has a Lesson.” Shanahan incorporates his teaching background into his reviews by including a few lessons movie goers might

The lessons can vary “from the serious to the farcical, so maybe it’s, ‘Hey don’t go down dark hallways, especially if you’re blond and it’s at night,’” Shanahan said, adding: “I always try to find three to five life lessons out of a film and incorporate that into my reviews.”

Many people view film criticism as a very subjective practice, Shanahan said. He said for him it is the opposite.

When reviewing films Shanahan keeps in mind what the film set out to accomplish.

“Pick a Transformers movie which is not trying to win best picture…but what’s it trying to do? Is it just trying to have a good time, blow stuff up and sell an audience on an entertaining experience?” he said.

Like many amateur film critics, Shanahan’s website did not attract many clicks at first.

But today he says his website has between 10,000 and 15,000 unique visitors each month.

For five years, Shanahan’s reviews were published on Examiner.com, which published music, entertainment and culture content before shutting down in 2016. The exposure helped to drive traffic to Shanahan’s website.

Shanahan applied with a local public relations company in Chicago to become a press credentialed film critic. The company reviewed his website in great detail, including his site’s audience reach and quality and quantity of his movie reviews.

Once he made the cut, he was eligible to be invited to review films before they were released to the general public.

“When I first started, only a couple of studios represented by that firm would send me invites…smaller independent labels like the Weinstein Company [now Lantern Entertainment] or Miramax but then all of a sudden Paramount would finally send me a title,” Shanahan said.

Though, Shanahan doesn’t get paid as a press credentialed film critic he said he does it for a few reasons: “It’s been fun…and I do enjoy the access but it’s the creative outlet.

It’s the chance to flex the creative muscle and do something enriching,” he said.

Shanahan didn’t stop short of being a film critic. He, along with two other local film critics, started the Chicago Independent Film Critics Circle three years ago.

“The goal was to create a second film critics association in the city for people who are more independent voices, more diverse voice,” Shanahan said.

He describes the Chicago Film Critics Association, which was founded in 1990 and has about 60 members, as the top-tier film critics association in Chicago. Yet, he says, they tend to produce print and TV rather than new media like podcasts.

They’re also not that diverse, Shanahan says.

“Most film criticism across the nation is middle-aged white men, myself included,” Shanahan said.

He said his group is about one-third “minorities, females or LGBT…I have to think that’s better than the other guys out there.”

Shanahan said his fledgling group struggles with gaining the respect that a more established like the Chicago Film Critics Association already has.

Some thought his group was just a fad and would disband, “so we’ve been able to try to increase our respect just by surviving,” Shanahan said.

Although the father of two doesn’t have much time between lesson plans and tucking his children in at night, he makes sure to review two films every week. This amounts to about 150 film viewings every year.

Spinning tales of death, deception and discovery

hey covertly stroll the streets of Oak Park and Forest Park. These two even pose as teachers during the day. But as night falls, they strike, spinning webs of deception and murder, false accusations and puzzlement.

Haul them in for questioning? No! Instead of being interrogated for hours, they’re getting awards. That’s because they are up-and-coming writers recently recognized by two national mystery organizations for their works.

Allison Baxter of Oak Park received the 2018 Helen McCloy Mystery Writers of America (MWA) Scholarship for Mystery Writing, and Mia P. Manansala of Forest Park was just honored with the 2018 Eleanor Taylor Bland Crime Fiction Writers of Color Award from Sisters in Crime. Both are unpublished, a qualification for the awards.

The MWA scholarship recognized Baxter’s work on Death in Logan Square, the story of Carmen, a Peruvian immigrant teaching in Chicago who is wrongly accused of murdering her husband’s mistress. Befriending her jail psychologist, they work together to prove her innocence, “or she will go to prison and her 14-year-old daughter will be deported.”

Baxter, age 50, who teaches English as a Second Language (ESL) at West Chicago Community High School, began writing 11 years ago when she took a six-session creative writing class with another Oak Park writer, Mary Anne Mohanraj.

“I was an English major and could do some writing,” Bax-

ter said. “It takes a lot of practice to get to where I am today.”

Baxter cited the support she receives from other writers as key to her process. She has continued her writing relationship with Mohanraj, whom she calls “an inspiration,” through a monthly writers’ group, and credits series mystery writer Julia Buckley, also of Oak Park, for giving input on her work.

Death in Logan Square is complete and as Baxter pursues an agent, she is writing the next mystery for her protagonist, Carmen: Death in Humbolt Park.

Manansala’s novels also take place in the Chicago area.

Her first, Death Comes to ComiCon, takes place at the Chicago comic book convention and features Sunshine, a female Filipina-American millennial who is “full butch” as the lead character. Her yet-to-be-titled second mystery, which was recognized by the Sisters in Crime award, has protagonist Lila, a young Filipina-American woman who moves back to her hometown outside Chicago to help at her Aunt’s restaurant. Manansala “tends to write humorous,” using “biting sarcasm” in Death Comes to ComiCon and keeping the other mystery lighter, but “there are still dead bodies, of course.”

The 32-year-old of Filipino descent who teaches ESL at English First, Chicago, began seriously writing her amateur-sleuth-based mysteries a few years ago.

“I hadn’t seen characters like myself, so I wanted to insert myself into the tradition,” she said.

Like Baxter, Manansala is grateful to the writing community.

port, critiques and found her agent through the website Pitch Wars. She is now mentoring others through the site and also gives back as board secretary to the MWA Midwest Chapter.

Manansala believes these roles she has taken on are “important to help younger and marginalized writers” of the genre.

Both writers received money as part of their awards.

Baxter used her $500 prize for a one-week intensive Write by the Lake class at the University of Wisconsin Madison.

Manansala was awarded $1,500 and plans to use it to attend Bouchercon, the World Mystery Convention in Florida in September “to accept the award and thank everyone” and also to attend a writers’ retreat in Wisconsin for one week with friends she has made through Pitch Wars.

As the women await the publication process, they will continue to spin their writerly webs.

“Planting clues, making a tone — dark or light, weaving it like a tapestry, trying to make everyone look guilty, being deceptive,” Baxter revealed, “makes it fun.”

Flowerpot takes temporary flight at Ferrara A temporary Ferrara employee called police about 5:10 a.m. on Aug. 10 from the intersection of Marengo and Harrison, saying another worker had just tried to rob him.

The man arrived at Ferrara Candy Company, 7301 Harrison St., early that morning, and went into the plant parking lot to make a phone call. While on the phone, another temporary worker allegedly jumped out of the bushes and threw a flowerpot at his head. The victim ducked, but the man reportedly pulled out a big knife, sliced the air and yelled, “You got my phone, you stole my phone!”

He then fled toward the Forest Park Blue Line station. The victim told police he didn’t know the man’s name but recognized him as another temporary employee at Ferrara. Officers went to REM Staffing, which provides temporary workers for Ferrara, where employees there told police they did not keep a database of their workers since they have so many thousands.

A woman said she had a suspicious encounter with an Uber driver at the intersection of Harlem and Roosevelt at 6:38 p.m. on Aug. 6, according to a report from the Riverside Police Department.

The woman said she requested an Uber but then cancelled the order, deciding to take the

The victim was transported to the hospital.

The woman said the whole fight was over some car keys that belonged to a man who was no longer on scene. Police said she was highly intoxicated. They cited her for public fighting and charged her with battery.

A Chicago man rented a U-Haul vehicle on Aug. 4 and failed to return it to 801 Harlem by the time it was due the next day. An employee said they called the man repeatedly about returning the U-Haul, but did not receive a response. Forest Park police entered

Three garages broken into ■■Sometime between 2 and 7 a.m. on Aug. 9, someone stole two bikes valued at $1,600 total from a garage on the 900 block of Dunlop. The victim said his backdoor and garage door were unlocked.

■■During the night of Aug. 7, someone stole two drills, a saw, air compressor and battery from a garage on the 500 block of Beloit. The victim said she left her garage door open overnight.

■■Just before 2:09 p.m. on Aug. 7, someone stole a snow blower valued at $300 from a garage on the 800 block of Dunlop. The victim said she parked her car in her garage, went inside her house briefly, leaving the overhead door of the garage open for a few minutes and, when she returned, the snow blower was missing.

Phone taken from two-flat A woman walked to the bottom floor of her two-flat about 7 a.m. on Aug. 7 and found a man standing in her living room on the 900 block of Circle.

She asked him what he was doing and he replied that he was talking to her husband.

The woman said her husband wasn’t in the

room, and asked the man to leave. The man left without incident.

After telling her husband about the man in the living room, he seemed surprised someone was in their house and said he hadn’t been talking to anyone. Later, she noticed her Verizon flip phone, valued at $160, was missing. The victim believes the man entered her home through an unlatched screen door.

‘Secret shopper’ scam A 70-year-old man told police at 4:33 p.m. on Aug. 10 that he purchased several gift cards as part of a “secret shopper” scam.

The man, who lives on the 100 block of Rockford, said he was contacted via email, asked to buy the gift cards, and then send photos of them to the “secret shopper.”

The “secret shopper” then deposited a check for $2,783 in the man’s US Bank account, which did not clear. The victim was charged $791 for the false check by US Bank.

Small-town harm

O

ver coffee Monday morning, the Review asked Forest Park Commissioner Tom Mannix if he had any regrets about bringing the wives of two video gaming opponents into last weekend’s multiple-day social media harangue.

In one case he suggested he feared the veterinarian wife of one gaming foe might actively hurt his dog if left in her care. In the other he questioned the ethics of an employee of the Cook County Clerk, and wife of another gaming opponent, suggesting without evidence she might have improperly inserted herself into the review of signatures on anti-gaming petitions.

Mannix thought about our question long and hard — 15 seconds, 30 seconds — before slowly replying, “My tone might have been slightly harsh.”

Extreme understatement.

Mannix, of whom we have been critical in the past, gave himself credit in our interview for having publicly contained his upset over the many months that the video gaming rulings of the local electoral board, of which he is one of three members, wound their way through the courts. When the state supreme court recently chose not to hear the case, thereby letting stand a lower court ruling allowing a binding referendum this November on the controversial issue, Mannix said he felt enabled to finally respond to what he feels have been unfair attacks on him.

Specifically he said that anti-gaming critics on social media have charged him with corruption and conflict of interest on this issue. Those, he said, are actual crimes and that he would “no longer allow myself to be bullied or defamed.”

He said the critics have “made it personal about my wife. It has impacted my family.” Asked for occasions when gaming opponents have directly named his wife on social media, Mannix did not have an immediate response.

We see more downsides than ups when it comes to small-town controversies being debated on social media — or small-town newspaper websites for that matter. The endless fight over video gaming and democratic norms in Forest Park is a most extreme example of how social media raises the heat and lowers the civility of our community.

Mannix said he is a resident first and a public official after that. We disagree. Elected officials have chosen a public role. They will be criticized, fairly and sometimes unfairly. And while they can defend themselves, it needs to be in a way that is respectful of their office and of their constituents.

Forest Park is in a bad place. We’ve burned through the lubrication that allows debate but avoids the hate. The tactics of what passes for leadership among bar owners in defense of video gaming profits has caused long-term division and deep suspicion. We have 80 days until the referendum on the subject. We have seven months until a municipal election that needs to turn on which mayoral and commissioner candidates have a plan to mend this community.

Tom Mannix is actively adding to the friction and he needs to stop it.

We need a positive behavior system for adults

W

hen I had breakfast with Mark Hosty about a year and a half ago, the most perplexing moment came after I told him, “I like the Forest Park Middle School.” It wasn’t that he didn’t hear me; he didn’t listen, so I had to say it a second time: “I like the Forest Park Middle School.” Yeah, I realize it isn’t paradise, but it is a perfect match for my family.

So I was excited last night to be back on the Panther side at the Forest Park Middle School sixth-grade orientation on Monday.

My son has progressed from the Betsy “Super Star” and the Field “Shark Bite” rewards from the Positive Behavior Intervention System, known as PBIS, and now will be earning “Panther Paws.”

Forest Park schools put a strong emphasis on being respectful, responsible and safe. This reward system encourages children to act or use words that promote a healthy school environment. They even teach lessons to encourage kids to practice it outside of school and on social media. A decade ago, this PBIS mission spread to the police, fire, park district and library staff to build up our kids and community through positive rewards because raising respectful, responsible children was agreed upon as a community principle.

Now I know there are very few adults in town who grew up with PBIS, but if Forest Park were a utopian version of itself, our townies could pass out PBIS cards to reward one another who demonstrate PBIS standards. Our town logo, a bench, would be the image and these “benchmarks” could be collected and turned in for rewards — like parking forgiveness passes.

If a community member makes a bad choice or shows unsafe communication, just as our local children do, they could “think about it” and write out why their behavior or actions were hurtful to the community. These letters could be shared privately or published in your newspaper, on your Facebook page or perhaps even in the village newsletter.

A brave initiative for a small community because no one is perfect, but one thing Forest Park is good at, is forgiving, accepting, and moving forward.

We’ve all seen the campaign messages, letters and arguments for candidates asking for the privilege of representing us, based on their longevity in town or community service. We’ve seen the emboldened

campaigns with misinformation, misleading images and erroneous comments too.

As a town, we have collectively forgiven (but not forgotten) the activity from “Citizens United in Forest Park” and the “Forest Park History Club.” We remember the mailer with a candidate represented by a crying baby; the old handcuff flier; that one about annexing to Maywood; and let’s not forget the scared children on the front porch. Who could forget that one with the park district candidate with the Proviso school campaign logo; and the flier with an angry Bruce Rauner masterminding an attack on our schools? Most of us remember having a chat with neighbors in vests and the out-of-towners, both peddling petitions at the polling places.

While not every “leader” in town uses a strategy of sharing misleading messages, erroneous information or attacks, some Forest Parkers are committed to this style of communication because even intimidation can be used to build community.

While one of the most unique community experiences in Forest Park is the culture of malicious campaign literature, the Forest Park Review has never tried to aggregate these fliers, letters and campaign literature in a central location. So in this next cycle, when a leafletted treasure arrives at your door, please take second to share it with the Review, good or bad, sincere or deceitful. We will do our best to fact-check letters and fliers and reach out to candidates to comment. This will be available for all citizens to read or not read, and decide if they want to exonerate, excuse, or hold people accountable for their actions.

It’s OK with me if you are a Forest Parker who prefers people with little integrity or find it comforting when there are confusing messages around, or if you like it when people spread filth to gain or retain power or if you are a single-issue voter.

For the rest of us who appreciate the work of our elected officials and value what they share during an election, the Forest Park Review can help. We can factcheck the fliers, ask candidates if they would like to make a statement, and even let you come up with your own conclusion. It is possible that the best some leaders can do is abstain, which might be a quality you admire in leadership.

A love letter to my former library Dear Forest Park Public Library, I know it’s silly to write a love letter to my library, but you know how it goes. Love makes one do silly things. You are a building of shelves filled with these stories.

You were my first library of choice. As in, I chose the town I lived in and I chose which library within walking distance to make my own. You are just so charming.

The first time I visited you was in my first week after moving out on my own (okay, not TOTALLY alone—I had a roommate). I walked to you, a list of books to check out in hand, and marched up to the desk to get a library card, like the big dweeb I am. I was denied, because apparently you require proof of residency to library patrons. OKAY! So I walked back home empty-handed and came back a few days later with the appropriate documentation.

And then our relationship really began.

You have tolerated three years of a wild hold list and only a few fines. My very first (and definitely not the last) library fine! What a milestone!

You make everyone feel welcome. You open your arms to everyone, from the

medical students practicing strange dialogues to the children hoping to pet Shelly the Turtle to the people whose only opportunity to file their taxes is through the library. You’re there to help and to encourage.

I attended a lecture hosted by Laura Browning, a journalist at the AV Club, in March of 2017 about news literacy. I was the youngest person there, and I loved it so much! Everyone was there to learn and better themselves in the time of ~fake news~ and we all came away feeling good.

And you put up a little free pantry in front of the library, on the busy street that runs through town. What a beautiful sight.

You are constantly doing events and activities for the community. Art projects.

Gardening projects. Educational forums.

Everything under the sun.

Really, when I think of community, I think of you.

We, do. We do love Forest Park (mostly the library). Thanks for letting me read all the books under your roof.

I got involved in the video gambling referendum process initially because of concern about ugly signs, but also as a way to get involved in my community. I really enjoyed meeting and talking with my neighbors, and found them equally concerned about the issue. But I stuck with the effort because I was appalled by the disdainful treatment we received. Dozens of volunteers walked door to door in sweltering heat and freezing cold. Hundreds and hundreds of people signed a petition indicating they wanted a vote. Twice! And were blocked and blocked and blocked. Forest Parkers made it clear they wanted a say in this matter, and since the law allows a binding referendum on this issue, they will have their chance in November. Those who wanted video gambling have had a chance to make their case, and the case they chose to make was “You don’t matter, and you don’t get a say.” I’m very glad the voters will get the final word.
