Ceramics fire up in Forest Park Slowfire and ViaClay expand from Oak Park

This month, Slowfire began hosting classes and camps for multimedia art forms, including ceramics, at 7405 Madison St. in Forest Park. Slowfire East will remain in operation as a members-only studio at 907 S. Lombard Ave. in Oak Park.

In April, ViaClay opened its members studio at 7744 Monroe St. in Forest Park, expanding from its 208 S. Marion St. location in Oak Park — where it will still host hand building and wheel throwing pottery classes for all ages.

“What I think the rise of all these clay studios really is is people are spending too much time on their phone or looking at a screen, and when you have clay on your hands, you cannot pick up a phone,” said Gabriel Tetrev, owner of ViaClay. “Seeing a pendulum swing way too far in a digital direction, I think it comes back the other way.”

“You can’t be on your phone, you have to focus on it,” Noelle Wright, owner of Slowfire, said of a possible reason for the rising popularity of clay and pottery work. “It’s a whole-body movement. You’re using your legs, arms and core. … It’s really the perfect marriage of something that’s movementbased but artistic.”

Slowfire also teaches art outside of ceramics, offering classes for mediums like drawing, jewelry-making and mixed media.

“There’s more and more interest in hands-on work and craft, whether that’s painting or printmaking or tie dyeing or ceramics,” Wright said of additional classes Slowfire offers. “People want to use their hands, and that seems especially important right now.”

Fourth of July festivities postponed due to weather conditions Park district will reschedule Blooze Brothers concert and fireworks show. No date set yet

Following a weekend of severe rainstorms and flash floods, the Park District of Forest Park was forced to cancel its Fourth of July festivities and postpone them until a later date. The announcements were released in two social media posts, the initial post about the concert and then a post about the fireworks show.

A date to reschedule has not yet been set, said Jackie Iovinelli, park district executive director. But alternative dates are being considered, she said.

Fireworks displays are very expensive, said Iovinelli. So the park district was doing everything it could to save the event by working out logistics before Saturday.

The first post came a little after 1 p.m., alerting locals that the Blooze Brothers concert would have to be rescheduled.

Iovinelli said they were able to save that concert for a later date since the band was very cooperative. They said, as long as they had not begun their departure for the event, it could be rescheduled, Iovinelli said.

“While it’s never easy to predict the weather, this allows us to reschedule at no additional cost,” the social media

post said.

After making the first post, Iovinelli said park officials began to work on assessing the weather conditions for the fireworks display.

According to Iovinelli, since the fireworks company had dealt with similar weather problems the day before, they were also able to work something out. The fireworks would be driven to the site, but as long as they were not assembled, they could be used again on a later day.

Mermaid Storytime at the pool helps kids ride the heat wave Mermaid Spooky reads to Forest Park families, sharing stories and deep-sea treasures

On a hot and humid morning on June 30 at the Forest Park Aquatic Center, more than two dozen children and family members gathered under a big umbrella to escape the heat by diving head-on into mermaid-led story time for kids up to 8 years old.

The event was put on in collaboration with the Forest Park Public Library and the Park District of Forest Park, with entertainment from Windy City Mermaids.

Sitting inside her shiny-pinky clamshell throne, surrounded by her thingamabobs, and wearing green and purple iridescent accessories, Larissa Kaye – better known as her mermaid persona, Mermaid Spooky – created a fairytale experience for families to remember for years to come.

As Mermaid Spooky splashed into story time, she offered some deep-sea gadgets and gizmos to help set the ocean setting. She read both “Bubbly Beautiful Kitty-Corn,” written

by Shannon Hale and illustrated by LeUyen Pham, and “Mermaids Are the Worst!” by Alex Willan.

Before things got a little too hot and everyone needed to take a dip in the pool, these families were taken on the oceanic experience of a lifetime Three years ago, Kaye was introduced to the world of mermaiding through the Netflix documentary series “MerPeople.” After watching it, she said, “I need to do that.”

She started by swimming with a club called Mermaid Swim Club in the Bensenville area. Kaye said that when she first showed up, she had no experience, but she was welcomed right away, given a tail by someone and was taught how to use it.

“You don’t need to be like a professional by any means,” she said. “You don’t need to have a lot of training; you’re welcome at any level, which is super cool. It’s a really, really welcoming community.”

Since then, Kaye has had plenty of training and has even participated in competitions.

Windy City Mermaids, Mermaid Spooky’s pod, are professional mermaid entertainers who perform at birthday parties, festivals, and special events with performances, storytelling, and meet-and-greets.

The stories they tell and the treasures they hand out are on brand with the mermaid theme, “making sure it’s a magical experience for them too,” Kaye said.

At this event, she handed out shell wands, temporary tattoos, and tiny trinkets as keepsakes to help the kids keep the magic alive.

“I love getting to make a little bit of magic for kids and hopefully give them a memory that they’re never going to forget,” Kaye said.

She currently lives on the North Side of Chicago but lived around Forrest Park and Oak Park for about five years.

Besides her mermaid persona, Kaye said she also has a fairy and pirate identity, alongside the Windy City Faries.

So many deaths of young children in the late 1800s

Lars and Eddie Schmidt, Wilhelmine Hellwig all died young

hen you walk through cemeteries as old as the ones in Forest Park, (most of which opened in the late 1800s), you will notice a sobering number of children’s graves. A baby born in Chicago in the 1870s had less than a 50% chance of making it to their fifth birthday.

More than half of all deaths in the city were children under five. Babies under a year old had a death rate of 74% while children between the ages of one and four had a death rate of 48%. Some of the diseases that stalked these children were typhoid fever, cholera, dysentery, tuberculosis, influenza, bronchitis, pneumonia, measles, whooping cough, scarlet fever, and diphtheria.

It was diphtheria which sadly took the lives of Lars and Eddie Schmidt. The brothers were both under five years old when they tragically died 17 days apart from each other in 1890.

You might be familiar with the Schmidt brother’s grave – photos of the site have been published in several books and webpages. Two small statues solemnly watch over the graves side by side, together in death. While one child is portrayed in a dress, they are, in fact, both boys. It was not uncommon at the time to dress boys and girls similarly while they were young -- skirts not only made diaper changing easier, boys didn’t typically start wearing pants until around the age of five. Besides the poignancy of brothers dying so young, time and the elements have worn down the granite statues, giving them a melancholy appearance. Many folks who visit the graves of Lars and Eddie leave gifts -- teddy bears, toy cars, etc.

Next to the statues lie two of the boys’ siblings, Rudolph, who lived less than nine years, and an unnamed baby who died before 1900. Their headstones are carved with sleeping angels, which was a common memorial for young children. These four deaths must have been particularly painful for their father who worked as an undertaker. Fortunately for Lars and Eddie’s parents, they went on to have three more children, girls, who all lived into adulthood.

Near the Schmidt brothers’ graves stands another sad statue of a child: Wilhelmine Hellwig. Tragically, Wilhelmine died on September 22, 1884 – the day she turned

three years old. The notice of Wilhelmine’s passing in the papers did not state the cause of her death, but another notice in the same listing was from diphtheria. (Quite often in those times, if a firm diagnosis couldn’t be made, and a child died from a respiratory illness, diphtheria would be listed as the cause.)

Like the Schmidt brothers, gifts are left for Wilhelmine: stuffed animals, bouquets of flowers, etc. Wilhelmine’s statue also seems to be taken from life. It is a small girl with a stoic expression, wearing the fashion of the times, leaning against a broken column (which indicates a life cut short). The weathered inscriptions on the front and side of the base are in German and state that Wilhelmine was the daughter of William and Mary Hellwig and the granddaughter of John and Wilhelmina Preis, all of whom are buried nearby.

Sadly, diphtheria, along with other childhood diseases, is making a comeback due to incomplete vaccine administration or vaccine non-adherence. Before vaccinations,

epidemics of diphtheria could devastate communities.

Noah Webster once said of diphtheria, “It was literally the plague among children.” Diphtheria primarily affects children under 12. It produces a thick layer of bacterial cells that covers the throat and tonsils making it difficult to swallow and breathe. Diphtheria comes from the Greek word, diphthera, meaning “leather hide,” which describes the thick gray membrane that forms during an infection.

Who knows what kind of an impact Lars, Eddie, and Wilhelmine might have had on the world had they lived longer. We can, though, learn lessons from their heartbreaking deaths caused by diseases that, with effort, we can still eradicate.

Slowfire, a place for art and inclusivity Slowfire East in Oak Park will remain an adults-only member space

A year after receiving her Masters of Fine Arts from the Art Institute of Chicago in 2004, Noelle Wright became a full-time professor at Dominican University, where she still teaches ceramics and sculpture. She’s also been chair of Dominican’s art department for over two years.

When the university’s learning went remote during the pandemic, Wright said she began offering private lessons out of her Oak Park home’s basement studio to friends and “kids who needed to get out of the house.”

With growing interest in those lessons, in 2021, Wright opened Slowfire at 907 S. Lombard Ave. in Oak Park. For the past few years, Slowfire has hosted classes for all ages for wheel-throwing, hand-building clay and painting ceramics. Now Slowfire East, the Oak Park space has been converted to an adults- and members-only studio for about 15

The new Slowfire West at 7405 Madison St. in Forest Park will host workshops and classes for all ages, plus provide a space for exhibitions and community events.

“Even if it didn’t seem like we were at capacity, we were at capacity with how much

we could manage shelf-wise and kiln-wise,” Wright said. “Processing the clay is a lot of work. There’s a lot of time involved in ceramics: Waiting for things to dry, waiting for the kiln, loading and unloading the kiln. … that consumes resources, time and energy, but maybe you don’t see those people in here all the time.”

Part of the reason Wright opened a new location is to accommodate a growing clientele, but also to have space for more types of kilns.

Slowfire West boasts two electric kilns, raku firing — “which is basically like fancy trash can firing,” Wright said — and a gas kiln will be shipped and installed off the back of the business in a few weeks. Each kiln can result in different effects for different types of clay.

“You get different effects at the different temperatures, and you also have to use different glazes at the different temperatures.

The more temperature range we can offer people, and the more types of firing we offer people, the more they can expand their work,” Wright said. “As long as we keep, on our end, elevating our education, people can learn indefinitely.”

Forest Park’s Slowfire West allows those taking classes to have their own shelves to store their materials. Previously Moss Modern Flowers, the space has a walk-in fridge in the back that students can use as humid, temperature-controlled storage for unfinished projects without their clay drying out — something Wright says was a draw in moving into the space.

“We’re excited about having a bigger space and more opportunities,” Wright said of Madison Street.

Having a second storefront also benefits students and employees that Slowfire has catered to since its inception.

“From the beginning, we had a lot of neurodivergent folks and staff. We’ve always intentionally kept our numbers really low because we’ve needed to be able to support people where they’re at,” Wright said.

Slowfire classes typically have no more than five students to one teacher, many who’ve been with Slowfire since it opened.

Wright added that Slowfire has hired extra support staff if needed, without asking families to pay extra.

“I think because we give such individualized attention and small class sizes, we’re very appealing to families who maybe are looking for more education rather than babysitting,” Wright said.

That includes education beyond ceramics.

In 2020, Wright created the 501c3 Slowfire Arts Foundation as a way to help pay for students who might not be able to afford such classes.

“I knew that if we were going to stay true to our mission to be inclusive, that also meant having to be inclusive socioeconomically,”

said Wright of her woman-owned, neurodivergent- and queer-friendly business.

Slowfire regularly holds fundraisers for the Slowfire Arts Foundation. And since Wright was diagnosed with cancer a year ago, the foundation’s focus has shifted to covering expenses for families affected by cancer.

“Art is healing,” Wright said. “It’s not just art, it’s a community.”

Ceramics studio offers ‘a place to practice’ for newbies and members alike

In 2018, Gabriel Tetrev opened up a 700-square-foot space on Oak Park Avenue to make and sell his ceramics. But after getting a lot of requests to teach classes, he searched for a location that would allow him to do so.

“When people see a wheel in the window, or you working with clay, they want to do it themselves,” said Tetrev, a 28-year-old who grew up in Oak Park. While some don’t want to spend money on other peoples’ pottery, “an $80 one-time class is actually worth it because you get to make something with your own hands and then get the product of that labor.

That’s very appealing to people, and that was more of a business. Not only could I pay my bills and make a living that way, I could also become an employer, which is something I’m incredibly passionate about.”

So Tetrev opened ViaClay at 208 S. Marion St. in 2020. Originally 2,000 square feet, ViaClay doubled in size the following year when its neighbor went out of business. The 4,000-square-foot space hosted ceramics classes for all ages, plus members — a group that has been capped at 40 participants for the last three years.

But after getting a mortgage and equipment loan from Forest Park Bank for 7744 Monroe St. in Forest Park, Tetrev said the first month the space was open in May, it garnered a total 111 members. The new 6,000 square foot studio in Forest Park is solely for those members.

ViaClay in Oak Park will continue offering classes. While the space could only accommodate seven six-week classes before, it will now host 14 weeks of classes.

“We are expanding in both directions. It’s more membership, it’s more classes,” Tetrev said. “We want ViaClay to be a place to practice, so both spaces want to embody that more or less, but in different ways for different customers.”

Members pay $250 a month to have 24/7 access to the Forest Park space and pay for clay as they use it.

“Membership really gives you more space

to store your work, and it opens up the options when it comes to exploring different firing cycles and different clays. If you want to make your own glaze, we can help you there,” Tetrev said.

After buying the Monroe Street building for members in September, Tetrev and John Beck, who has helped run the business for the last six years, built custom worktables and shelves.

“They’re a little bit deeper and a little bit taller than you can buy,” Tetrev said of the custom shelves. “We really wanted to provide members with as much volumetric space as possible,” or 70% more than what ViaClay offered at its Oak Park location.

When a member finishes a ceramic piece at one of 17 pottery wheels or by hand-throwing, it goes through an initial bisque firing.

The piece comes out porous, Tetrev said, and can be dunked into a bucket of glaze, then fired either in one of two electric kilns or, come next month, a new gas kiln. The gas kiln is about three times the size of either electric kiln and more cost effective, according to Tetrev.

“You can get some really interesting effects because you’re firing with gas. I’ve been waiting six years to install a machine like this, and it’s proved impossible to do in a space that you’re renting,” Tetrev said.

Tetrev said that, from about 1950 to 1990, 7744 Monroe St. housed USA Beverage, which rolled beer off the neighboring CSX rail line and stored it in a walk-in fridge that now houses kilns. Though no trains have run on the rail line in decades, Tetrev said 700 square feet of the building is on top of CSX’s land, so he has a 1,000-year lease with the company.

Tetrev said his new neighbors have been accommodating since the building went from quiet light manufacturing to a clay studio.

“We’ve got a community here for the foreseeable future. I’m very excited to offer things like workshops,” Tetrev said. “I want to do everything that is ceramics, everything that is pottery.”

House fire on Harlem

Police responded to the 600 block of Harlem Avenue around noon on June 30 for a house fire. According to police, there was black smoke coming from a building, where all occupants had been evacuated.

A juvenile at the scene told police he put a lighter in a trash can on the back porch, which may have started the fire. According to the police report, the juvenile was with his father most of the day, and his father told police he dropped his son off at the apartment and watched him go into his room to sleep. Fire departments from Forest Park, Oak Park, River Forest, Maywood, Cicero and Berwyn helped contain the fire. No one was charged at the time of the police report, pending further investigation into the cause of the fire.

Possession of controlled substance The Dollar Tree on Roosevelt Road called police after a retail theft around 5 p.m. on July 2. When police arrived, they saw a man matching the offender’s description in front of the store and detained him. The man told police he stole the sunglasses he was wearing from Dollar Tree, and when police asked if he had any other items on him, he said there was a crack pipe and crack in his pocket. The man gave police a false name and date of birth. When he gave them his real identification at the police station, police found that he had two arrests out of Cook County and DuPage County for possession of controlled substance and drug paraphernalia. The man was charged with those warrants, retail theft, obstructing his identification, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Death investigation At 3 p.m. on July 4, police were dispatched to a gangway in the 600 block of Ferdinand Avenue after a caller reported a woman who was unconscious and not breathing. A redacted police report omits any additional information, but the Forest Park Police Department classifies the

Accident There was a multi-vehicle accident near 16th and Harlem before 3 a.m. on July 5. A woman was arrested for hitting a traffic sign in the 7200 block of 16th Street and given a local ordinance violation for damaging village property, according to the police report.

EMS July 5 afternoon, River Forest police advised dispatch that, at Madison and Des Plaines in Forest Park, there was someone lying on the ground in the crosswalk. Forest Park police reported that the man was conscious but seemed confused and was unable to provide his birthday. He was taken to Rush Oak Park Hospital.

These items were obtained from Forest Park Police Department reports dated June 29 through July 5 and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded.

Anyone named in these reports has only been charged with a crime and cases have not yet been adjudicated. We report the race of a suspect only when a serious crime has been committed, the suspect is still at large, and police have provided us with a detailed physical description of the suspect as they seek the public’s help in making an arrest.

Hitting the bullseye at Circle Tavern The making of a mainstay takes time and passion

lmwood Park’s de facto downtown, Conti Circle, has always been a center for good food and night life. Six years into his ownership of Circle Tavern, 18 W. Conti Parkway, Michael Jardine feels that he’s reached his target.

“I grew up here my whole life and Circle Tavern is somewhere that I would want to go and hang out,” Jardine said. “That was the goal all along. It took time to get there, and we’ll keep updating it just to make it as good as possible. Consistency is my main goal.”

Burgers and pizza were the first menu items that the owner perfected. Once he felt those were in the zone, he turned his attention to the chicken dishes. Where before they had thinner breading and less zing, they now are marquee players too.

Back when Jardine took over, the tavern’s atmosphere played one note.

“We kind of went from a late-night place with a pool table and dartboard,” he said.

“Now it’s more, I don’t want to say more upscale, but more upscale from there. We just take it up to somewhere you could come eat with the family on a Friday night or you could go on a Saturday night without the family and also have as good of a time, but in different ways. So, we take on different personalities.”

Food and drink specials carry the easy-living feeling onward.

“We have a summer sampler. It features those brand-new chicken tenders we were talking about and also comes with fried pickles and our sweet corn fritters,” he said.

“There’s two drinks right now actually that are awesome. There’s the Capri Sunburn. which is a Campari drink, a little summer sweet, really nice. And then the other one is called ‘Offensively Hawaiian’ because it’s pineapple-based, like you’d have at a tiki bar.”

Tasty specials on the menu include a three slider platter and a pasta primavera.

When summer is over, the fun isn’t. At Halloween the bar goes all out with what they call ‘Spooky Tavern’ decorations, but Jardine is quick to note that it’s still family friendly, nothing too gruesome. He still wants you to have an appetite. Christmastime gets the full treatment too.

“We’re constantly trying to stay on it and on top of it, not only for the regulars who come here and get something different. But then when someone does come here for the first time, it’s distinctive,” he said. “It’s nice to still be here and just keeping it exciting.”

Fizz’d Up mobile trailer dishes dirty sodas and more

Summertime is cool drink sipping time. There’s a new beverage buggy on the streets. A mobile soda fountain called Fizz’d Up came from the minds of Oak Parkers Cammie Hunter and Tracie Iannantuoni.

On Facebook the owners, amused with themselves, posted: this is what a midlife crisis looks like.

“All of this all started in late January of this year. I brought the idea to Tracie because we’ve been good friends for many years,” Hunter said. “Our 13-year-old boys have been best friends since they were three. We started poking around Facebook Marketplace to see if there were trailers available. We just decided to pull the trigger.”

Their decked-out drink trailer made its first pours over Memorial Day weekend.

What is dirty soda?

“The creams are what makes the drinks dirty,” Hunter

said. “The favorite one, I feel, is coconut cream. We also use vanilla cream, and we use heavy whipping cream to make cold foam. We have a cherry cola drink that has a cheesecake cold foam on it, which has been very popular.”

The base liquids are Coke, Dr. Pepper, Sprite, Fanta or root beer. They also serve dirty refreshers, which are made with sparkling water. Dirty energy drinks use Alani, Monster, and Red Bull. There are also lemonade and sugar-free options: Sprite Zero, Coke Zero, Diet Coke, Diet Dr. Pepper. Syrups provide the zingy flavors like vanilla, lime, salted caramel, cotton candy, cherry, watermelon and more. A selection of sugar-free syrups are available too.

A quick look at the menu and a few options jump out. A “Shark Attack” combines Sprite, lemonade, with blue raspberry, coconut and strawberry syrups. Whipped cream floats on that wave of flavor.

The “OG Remix” is Dr. Pepper, vanilla and lime syrups, topped with coconut cream.

While there are other local outlets serving dirty sodas these days, what really got the owners invested in the idea was the ability to go where the customers were.

“We are mobile and we want to be where the people are,” Hunter said. “We can pick up and go to different activities.

Block parties are a really big thing for us. We have been at some graduation parties as well. And we also plan to pop up around the pools because, they don’t have concessions at the pools anymore. We can be there when you’re thirsty leaving the pool or come out for a quick drink.”

Drink cost in the range of $6 to $8.

“We have some more deluxe dirty sodas, which have whipped cream, gummies, coffee, boba or some other fun elements in it,” she said.

They are making regular stops around town. You can check out the schedule on Fizz’d Up’s social media accounts. You can also book a stop at private events. There is a $30 booking fee and a 25-drink minimum.

So far, so good for these new entrepreneurs.

“Everyone just seems really excited to try it,” she said.

“It’s something new that no one’s had. And it’s good flavors and tastes. We’ve had a really great time. Right now, we’re anticipating working through Halloween and then putting it to rest in November and then probably coming back again in May.”

T

he strange thing is that birthdays aren’t really about age.

They’re about relationships.

If everyone who knows you is delighted to spend a Saturday afternoon celebrating another lap around the sun, congratulations. You’ve apparently been the sort of person people enjoy having in their lives.

If attendance requires repeated reminders, emotional blackmail, and a Facebook post that begins, “Guess nobody remembers whose birthday it is …” the problem may not be the calendar.

At some point, every aging blowhard loses the ability to confuse longevity with likability.

You’ve met this guy. Every story begins with how important he used to be.

Every conversation eventually becomes a lecture. Every criticism is dismissed because, after all, he’s been around forever. He mistakes exhaustion for respect.

And every year he throws himself another birthday party.

The invitations become less an expression of affection than a summons.

“Come celebrate me.” “... Why?” “Because it’s my birthday.”

Valuing age, challenging ageism I was fortunate to participate in the Action Community Engagement (ACE) Research Project as a group leader during the past few months. The project is studying whether strengthening positive age beliefs and challenging ageism can improve individual and community health and well-being.

The participants in Forest Park are now launching projects to share these ideas with the Forest Park community.

Join us for the Anti-Ageism Variety Show which will focus on positive aspects of aging and challenging ageism. This free event takes place on Monday, July 13 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Howard Mohr Community Center, 7640 Jackson Blvd.

Join the ACE group members as they share skits, poems and lead us in dancing. You can also enjoy free ice cream and view the launch of the ACE Photo Exhibit. The photos will then be displayed at the Brown Cow Ice Cream Parlor and in the windows of local businesses along Madison Street.

That’s not really an answer.

This year’s Fourth of July had exactly that energy.

The flags were out. The grills were hot. The fireworks were ready to distract us with expensive things exploding in the sky.

But underneath it all was the unmistakable sense of a guest of honor insisting that applause is mandatory.

Maybe that’s what felt so off.

For years I’ve been mildly skeptical of the Fourth because compulsory patriotism has always seemed a little weird. If your love has to be scheduled and accessorized, perhaps it’s not love but choreography.

This year, going to the Fourth felt like attending a birthday party because declining would create more drama than showing up.

So you eat a hot dog. You clap politely when the candles are blown out. You say, “Many happy returns” because that’s what the script requires.

Then you check your watch, make an excuse about an early morning, and head

home.

The birthday boy mistakes attendance for affection.

He always does.

Get a garbage can: Keep the village clean

Excerpt from Forest Leaves, July 18, 1919: he streets and alley department again appeals to the people of Forest Park to “help keep the village clean.” Numerous complaints are still coming in about families who have not as yet provided themselves with the proper garbage as prescribed in our village ordinance.

In the alley in the rear of these buildings, garbage is scattered all over, in spite of the fact that it is contrary to and in violation of our ordinance; furthermore, it is a source of grave danger and a menace to the health of the community. Unless this nuisance is abated at once, violators will be prosecuted according to ordinance hereafter.

It is the moral duty of every resident to help and assist the authorities in keeping our village clean, and by so doing you can maintain the sanitary conditions to a 100 percent standard.

Tin cans and bottles should not be placed with garbage but should be deposited in separate receptacles for that purpose. Grass cut on your parkway should not be raked into the street but should be placed on a pile with other refuse and rubbish in the alley from where our teams will haul it at frequent intervals. Paper should not be allowed to litter our alleys but should be burned.

In connection with burning paper, great care should be exercised not to set fences and buildings on fire nor allow children to set their clothes on fire.

Sandy Boy, 84 Volunteer service

Sandra Ellen Remus Boy, 84, formerly of Forest Park and later of Marco Island, Florida, died peacefully on June 25, 2026. Born on Aug. 14, 1941, she and her husband, Bud, shared a love of adventure that took them across five continents, and nearly all 50 states. A proud graduate of Morton High School, she earned an Associate Degree from Morton College and was also certified at Chicago City Colleges by the American Society of Clinical Pathology and continued to nurture her curiosity and love of learning by attending countless lectures at Triton College.

She served as a health inspector for the village of Forest Park and later retired from the American Cancer Society after 25 years as a field representative. She remained deeply dedicated to the American Cancer Society, volunteering for fundraising efforts, such as Relay for Life and Reach to Recovery, for more than 10 years, which raised hundreds of thousands of dollars toward cancer research.

After retiring, she made her home on Marco Island, Florida, where she became president of the Palm Paradise Condominium Association, a role she held for 16 years, guiding the community through nine

hurricanes with strength, dedication, and care.

She generously gave her time and talents to many organizations, including For the Love of Cats, Bedtime Bundles, the Marco Island Historical Society, the Marco Island Chamber of Commerce, Christmas Box Angel, and St. Mark’s Church. An avid crocheter, she created and donated hundreds of blankets and hats for pediatric cancer patients and residents of assisted living facilities, offering comfort and warmth through every stitch.

Sandy was preceded in death by Howard W. “Bud” Boy Jr., her husband of nearly 50 years; her son, John Howard Boy; her grandson, John Thomas Boy; her parents, John and Marie (Randula) Remus; and her aunt, Sandra Krakora.

She is survived by her daughters, Janine (Boy) Parisi, Claudine Boy, and Michelle (Dan) Venske; her grandchildren, Danielle Boy, Jason Brown and Daniela Venske; and her great-grandchildren, Rylan and Jaxon Loveless and Ariana Sabye. The love she gave will continue to live on through each of them.

She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, resilience, and purpose, reflect in one of her favorite quotes: “To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived is to have succeeded.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, July 8 at Zimmerman-Harnett Funeral Home 7319 W.
