Gillian helped start air show as a salute to veterans

W

hile most people enjoy prosaic hobbies such reading, fishing or gardening, Forest Park Village Administrator Tim Gillian’s hobby is flying – specifically flying his World War II era North American AT-6.

He was in Wisconsin over Memorial Day weekend for the Gathering of Warbirds in Waukesha. The weekend before, he visited downstate Illinois for the Salute to Veterans Air Show, which he helped start. This weekend, he will be at the Cavalcade of Planes in Bolingbrook.

Gillian has owned his “fun old airplane” for 20 years, flying around the country to participate in air shows and flyovers. He and his older brother Mike bought it together.

They keep it at the Aurora Airport in Sugar Grove, performing maintenance themselves with the assistance of a Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) approved mechanic.

The AT-6, which stands for advance trainer, is powered by a 600-horsepower supercharged engine. The airplane is a two-seater, which allows an instructor to sit behind See AIR SHOW on page 9

Scott Watson used to own a home in Forest Park, but held “the itch to sell everything, get an RV and go explore” for years.

Giving the gift of mobility

obility is freedom for children with spina bifida. Go Baby Go ensures these kids enjoy that freedom. The Forest Park Kiwanis Club is one of its supporters. They are joining other Kiwanians at an event on June 1 at Shriners Hospital to give the gift of mobility to children suf suffering from spina bifida. Shriners was selected because it’s the headquarters of the Illinois Spina Bifida Association, headed by Matt Larsen.

Go Baby Go is the brainchild of physical therapist Cole Galloway. He came up with the idea of providing miniature motorized cars to kids with spina bifida. Many of these children are wheelchair bound.

This doesn’t just limit them physically. They are also isolated socially. They feel helpless, dependent on their parents to push or carry them.

Parents and their children with spina bifida will descend on Shriners to help Kiwanian volunteers assemble really cool cars. Late-model BMWs no less.

They will get plenty of expert advice. Engineers from the Shirley Ryan Ability Lab will make sure the cars are properly wired.

Physical therapists evaluate each child, so the start button is placed in a position

where they can easily access it.

The event brings together volunteers from as far away as Dixon, Illinois. Students from local high schools and colleges are also helping out.

“They experience the tingling feeling of building something to help someone else,” said Bill Piper.

Bill has been in Kiwanis for 40 years and is a member of the River Forest-Oak Park Club.

He collected donations from Kiwanis clubs, recruited volunteers and organized the event.

He will be joined by the club’s president, Rick Gillis, who acts as technical coordinator. They face many technical challenges, depending on the child’s disability.

Most cannot operate a foot pedal, so the start button is mounted in a place where they can easily access it. Some are installed behind the child’s head, so they can simply lean back to start the car. The car also has a kill switch on the back to keep the child safe. It’s no wonder Galloway refers to our local Kiwanians as the “Illinois Dream Team.”

They certainly made a dream come true for Biviana Hernandez, a 5-year-old with Spina Bifida. Her father, Sergio, heard about the program from Matt Larsen at a Spina

Bifida event. Sergio brought his wife and daughter to Go Baby Go in 2016. They built a white BMW and decorated it with colorful decals. Biviana’s legs have nerve damage, so they placed the start button on the steering wheel. She couldn’t wait to drive.

Though she lacked the strength to turn the steering wheel, that didn’t keep her from taking a spin outside Shriners. As she drove, she smiled and blew kisses to onlookers. Now she has mastered steering and drives in her front yard. Neighborhood kids flock to see her BMW and Biviana lets them take test drives.

During the winter, she drives around the house. Though she cannot walk, she can climb out of the car and push it out of tight places. Once her parents took her to a parking lot to practice. She spotted a McDonald’s and wanted to motor past the drive-thru window to order her Happy Meal. Driving the car has helped Biviana emotionally, socially and physically.

The Go Baby Go event is not open to the public, but parents of children with spina bifida are encouraged to check it out. They can also attend a fundraiser on Sept. 7 at Autobahn Country Club, where they can watch racecars and check out BMWs that can actually use a drive-thru.

Tri-village economic summit focuses on the future

Ten who do business in Forest Park attended the 6th Annual Economic Luncheon held at Dominican University on May 21.

Most were from the Forest Park National Bank, a gold sponsor of the event.

The luncheon, hosted by the Oak ParkRiver Forest Chamber of Commerce, which had at least 50 members present, was promoted as a “three-village summit” under the theme “Envisioning 2029.” The idea was to have the three top executives in the Oak Park-Forest Park-River Forest tri-village area — Forest Park Mayor Rory Hoskins, River Forest President Cathy Adduci, and Oak Park Mayor Anan Abu-Taleb — give their views of where their villages are headed, both individually and collectively.

Questions came from Dominican professors and chamber members. Each executive began with an opening statement stating why “my village is heading in the right direction.”

Hoskins touted what he called a “renaissance” in Proviso High Schools District 209 and Forest Park’s racial diversity as evidence that the village is “doing great.”

Abu-Taleb, who has facilitated the construction of several high-rise buildings in Oak Park, said the world is changing and Oak Park needs to become “more urban.”

He used the word “height” more than once to describe what lies in the future and floated the idea of the village creating a chief technology officer as one more step toward that future.

All three emphasized that the role of village government is to set the table by moving the zoning process forward and being quick to issue permits and then get out of the way of entrepreneurs and business owners.

Hoskins held up what he described as a flourishing Madison Street business corridor as evidence that the village’s approach to economic development is working. He agreed with his colleagues that more people seem to be working at home.

All three said the state of Illinois poses obstacles to inter-village cooperation. AbuTaleb noted there has been talk of a consolidated fire department, but state law prohibits it. He was more optimistic about the possibility of a shared facility for law enforcement.

The topic of recreational cannabis came up, and Abu-Taleb saw it as an issue of how local governments raise revenue. Adduci wasn’t sure where she stood at the present time but was “optimistic” regarding coming up with a workable solution. Hoskins said, “Whatever happens, we’ll adjust.”

When the subject of promoting diversity came up, all three boasted about their villages’ track records and the passage of welcoming resolutions in each. They agreed, “There’s a lot more that needs to be done.”

When asked about economic development, Hoskins and Abu-Taleb named Roosevelt Road and Adduci and Abu-Taleb shared a concern for North Avenue.

A question about residents leaving town because of high taxes seemed to be aimed at the mayor of Oak Park, who responded you get what you pay for and the real question is, “Are we getting value for the taxes we pay?

The question is not the amount of the taxes but the value we get from them.”

“When I would knock on doors during the daytime in my campaign,” he said, “often someone working at home would come to the door.”

Regarding the issue of privacy, Abu-Taleb pointed out, “We all give up privacy for the sake of convenience.” Referring to the use of online connectivity he added, “It increases productivity but it’s also dangerous.”

All three chief executives favored instituting community-wide Wi-Fi service. “Absolutely,” said Adduci.

“I favor village Wi-Fi,” Hoskins answered, “especially because it would be a benefit for low-income people.”

Abu-Taleb was a little more restrained saying, “It depends on who pays for it.”

When the moderator, Paul Zimmerman, asked what their villages would be doing in the next 10 years to become greener, AbuTaleb mentioned Smart City technology and dealing with plastics in general, and straws and bags in particular.

Adduci said River Forest is already doing curbside composting and her community is also thinking about straws, plastic bags and Smart technology.

Hoskins acknowledged that Forest Park is not as green as its two neighbors but offered the recent creation of an Environmental Commission as evidence that “we’re getting

If one teammate steps up his or her game, it spurs the others to follow suit but, ultimately, there is a lot of collaboration that occurs between the village governments, the chambers, and the various economic development entities.”

D91 donates 30 laptops, 27 backpacks to Haiti Relative of a D91 administrator connects Forest Park and Haitian schools

Eileen Rapp Murphy, an Indiana resident who is the aunt of a Forest District 91 administrator, will be taking her 27th service trip to Haiti for eight days in June, delivering clothing, school supplies, food and other necessities to a recentlybuilt local school. Some of those items are supplied from District 91. At a school board meeting on May 9, members approved donating 30 used laptops to the school, with Michelle Hopper, D91’s director of student services, leading the way. D91 also donated 27 backpacks.

“After the earthquake she asked if it was possible for us to look at any old devices that are no longer in circulation with our students to see if we would be willing to donate devices as is, without having to do any refurbishing of the devices or otherwise,” Ed Brophy, assistant superintendent of operations, said at the meeting. Normally, D91 recycles its old devices. The board unanimously approved the measure.

“It’s exciting,” board president Kyra Tyler said at the meeting.

Murphy, who was born in Chicago and raised in Columbus, Indiana where she currently resides, took her first trip to Haiti in 1998 when a visiting preacher, Brother Joe Mobley, spoke at her local church and compelled her pastor and others to travel to his country. According to Murphy, Brother Joe Mobley taught attendees to assist the pastors in any way possible since social services were minimal in Haiti.

“There is barely any social work in Haiti, except [work]

done by pastors and missionaries, and they get exhausted,” she wrote via email.

Murphy, a hairdresser by trade, continued travelling to Haiti throughout the years. When Brother Mobley’s health began to decline, he encouraged Murphy to continue the work. Now Murphy travels with a group of her friends, has been involved with opening schools and medical clinics, bringing supplies from the United States, and starting churches.

In 2018, Haiti was hit by a 5.9-magnitude earthquake—the strongest Earthquake to hit the country since January 2010.

That quake affected 3 million people, and is said to be the most devastating natural event to occur in Haiti’s recent history. Between the earthquakes and the 2016 late-season category 5 Hurricane Matthew—which took the lives of 546 Haitians—the country has been left with little time to recover between disasters.

The steady increase of natural disasters has left many living in destitute conditions.

“After the earthquake, they are still living out of tents and shacks with no running water and not much medical aid,” Murphy wrote via email.

Murphy and her friends normally carry two 50 pound suitcases with donations. According to Murphy, this year a shipping container will bring school uniforms, medical supplies, tools, fabric, hospital beds, a wheelchair, bunk beds, bikes and sewing machines. The sewing machines will be used in schools to teach students the trade. A farmer in Bedford, Indiana has also donated manna rice packs and milled

Murphy typically spends 10 days in Haiti, flying into Portau-Prince and working in the outlying villages. Murphy will be assisting with a wedding and a baptism this trip. But her adventure’s primary focus will be working in Haitianrun schools and assisting teachers. Murphy and her fellow travelers will be bringing food to schools in order to provide school children with the resources they need to focus, as hunger is a tremendous problem in Haiti.

“We try to provide food at the schools so students aren’t passing out and are able to play and learn,” Murphy wrote via email.

Infant Welfare Society Tees It Up for Healthy Kids

Julie McKune, who has chaired the event for five years, says that Tee It Up For Healthy Kids is just one way she and her family support the mission of IWS. “My parents were very philanthropic, and they taught me the importance of volunteering,” says the lifelong Oak Parker of her commitment to the IWS. In her almost twenty-three years with the organization, McKune has worn many hats from Circle leader to annual fund chair, and she says the years of dedication have come easily, as her time at IWS has given her much in return.

“You go in to give back, and you stay because it’s so enjoyable. It’s meant a lot to do something good, and to be able to do it with friends is even better.”

Giving back is a family affair for the Julie and her husband Pat. This year, Pat will be the recipient of the Green Jacket Award, and IWS President Debbie Blanco, says the choice was easy.

The day includes 18 holes of golf, a raffle, grill lunch, and dinner in support of the IWS Children’s Clinic, which provides pediatric medical, dental and behavioral health care to children in need. Tee It Up For Healthy Kids is a way for the community, families and friends to get involved and support IWS’s mission of

us, and it’s a fun play on the green jacket given to the winner of the Masters Golf Tournament. Pat has been a long-time supporter if IWS, and he has brought in a lot of friends to be supporters as well.

While our fundraisers are obviously meant to raise funds, they are also meant to build community as ‘friend-raiser,’ and Pat has really contributed to that.”

Pat gives Julie much of the credit for their family’s philanthropy and says the pair, who attended OPRF High School together, grew up realizing the importance of the work of IWS. “We live in Oak Park and grew up in Oak Park. IWS is the organization that directly helps children, and in doing so, helps families too. Healthcare, or lack of access to healthcare, can really change a person’s life.

The work IWS does is so important.”

Blanco notes that not only is Julie’s mom Judy Scully a dedicated supporter of IWS, but the family involvement extends

to a third generation with Julie and Pat’s daughter Erinn McKune, a social worker and an IWS board member. Erinn got involved with IWS while in high school when Julie led Circle 80, the group for students. Today, Blanco states that Erinn is leading the membership committee and spearheading the formation of a young professionals group in the city.

Blue Max Coffee abruptly shutters

After nearly 15 years in business, Blue Max Coffee closed last week, with owner Terry Griffin saying he has “been dealing with a potential buyer for the business.”

A post on the coffee shop’s Instagram page on May 19 said, “Due to many technical difficulties, Blue Max will be going through some changes. We will be closed for a while due [to] repairs.”

Blue Max opened at 26 Lathrop Ave. in 2005, and Griffin bought the business in September 2008. It was known for its coffee, scones and breakfast dishes.

Police find drugs, needles at gas station Police spotted a Ford with a rear license plate registered to another vehicle in the parking lot at Thornton’s Gas Station, 601 Harlem Ave., about 11:30 a.m. on May 20.

A check of the vehicle registration revealed a warrant for the owner’s arrest from the Will County Sheriff ’s Department.

Police pulled into the parking lot and the car immediately switched course, traveling westbound. Three people exited the vehicle and began running in different directions.

Officers caught Timothy Coffman, 29, of Romeoville, in the alley on the 600 block of Circle Avenue. Coffman told police he started running because he had a warrant out for his arrest and needles on him.

Police uncovered two hypodermic needles, five suspected bags of heroin, two bags of suspected cannabis, and a pill bottle containing six orange pills on Coffman. He was transported to the police station, where he told police he had driven to Chicago to buy heroin in the morning. He said he had been doing heroin for about 15 years, and had pulled into Thornton’s to buy gas and to “dope.”

He was charged with possession of a controlled substance, which is a felony, as well as possession of drug equipment, possession of less than 30 grams of cannabis and resisting an officer.

Police also captured a Lockport woman,

25, who was a passenger in Coffman’s vehicle on the 600 block of Circle Avenue. She has a warrant out for her arrest from the Grundy County Sheriff ’s Department, and was transported to that station. The other passenger who was in Coffman’s car was released on the scene.

Hit-and-run at Thornton’s Police watched a Mitsubishi Outlander crash into two other cars at Thornton’s Gas Station, 601 Harlem Ave., at 2:24 p.m. on May 22.

The vehicle then left the scene, heading north on Harlem Avenue. Officers turned on their emergency lights and attempted to curb the car, but it did not stop.

The Mitsubishi turned east on Monroe Street, north on Maple Avenue and cut through the parking lot of an administrative building in Oak Park. Police eventually curbed the vehicle on the 500 block of Wisconsin Avenue. An Elmwood Park man, 37, exited the vehicle and started running from police.

An Oak Park officer eventually caught him on the 1000 block of Susan Collins Lane in Oak Park, and the man was transported to the Forest Park police station.

The man told police he picked his car up from the shop earlier in the day, and had

taken two different medications that made him sleepy. He believes he fell asleep at the wheel and woke up when he hit the two cars at Thornton’s. When he saw police behind him, he got scared and fled.

He was charged with fleeing a police officer, improper lane usage, failure to reduce speed, leaving the scene of an accident, no driver’s license and resisting an officer.

Suspicious activity at car wash Employees at Crystal Car Wash, 901 S. Harlem Ave., waved police down at 8:22 a.m. on May 23, saying that a man was acting suspiciously outside the car wash.

Employees told police the man had his hat lowered and sweater pulled up to reveal only his eyes.

Police spotted the man on the 1000 block of Harlem Avenue, asked him to stop but the man kept walking. Officers handcuffed him and found a metal tire iron hidden in his pants.

A search of the Chicago resident, 27, revealed he had an active warrant out from the Chicago Police Department for possession of dangerous drugs. He was transported to a Chicago police station. Forest Park police also charged him with obstructing a burglary investigation.

Customer batters store employee Police responded to a call at Metro PCS, 7226 Roosevelt Road, at 9:52 a.m. on May 22, about a customer who had committed battery against an employee.

The employee told police a customer walked into the store, complaining that his charge cord to his phone was not working and he wanted to return it. The employee plugged the cord in and saw that it was working correctly. The man then became upset and demanded his cord back.

The employee unplugged the cord and began winding it up. The man didn’t wait for her to finish, grabbed the cord from her hands and bent her finger back in the process. She refused to be transported to the hospital.

Burglar rides off with two bikes At some point between 12 and 7 a.m. on May 21, someone broke into a garage on the 500 block of Beloit Avenue and took two bikes, a bottle of wine and loose change. The bikes were valued at $800 each.

These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Forest Park Police Department, May 20-26, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded.

Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

After suicides, area clergy open churches as ‘Safe Spots’ Proviso Township Ministerial Alliance Network member churches to open doors to young people this summer

The ministers in Proviso Township Ministerial Alliance Network are responding to what may legitimately be called a mental health crisis among our youth by establishing what they’re calling Safe Spots for young people this summer at several church throughout Proviso Township.

Bishop Bill Teague, the pastor of Hope Tabernacle, 7416 Dixon St. in Forest Park, said his church will be open to area youth every Tuesday beginning June 4, from 6 p.m. until 8 pm.

Bishop Dr. Reginald Saffo, the chairman of PTMAN, said that he was inspired to launch the project “in response to the recent suicides of those young people in our community.

Those incidents shook the community on many levels.”

Since last November, three Proviso East High School 15-year-olds, and at least one adult male — all from Maywood — have died by suicide. All of the teen suicides happened during holiday seasons and/or school breaks, Saffo observed.

“We concluded that perhaps when school is in session, the students have a respite from issues at home,” he said.

“However, when school is out, many don’t have a place to go

where they can get away from those challenges at home.”

According to the American Psychological Association, in addition to stress at home, young people between 15 and 21 years old are stressed out by news of mass shootings, sexual assault and the separation and deportation of immigrant and migrant families.

“America’s youngest generation is also significantly more likely (27 percent) than other generations, including Millennials (15 percent) and Gen Xers (13 percent), to report their mental health as fair or poor,” the APA explained in a 2018 report. “They are also more likely (37 percent), along with Millennials (35 percent), to report they have received treatment or therapy from a mental health professional, compared with 26 percent of Gen Xers, 22 percent of baby boomers and 15 percent of older adults.”

Arthur C. Evans Jr., the APA’s CEO, said that current events “are clearly stressful for everyone in the country, but young people are really feeling the impact of issues in the news, particularly those issues that may feel beyond their control.”

Saffo said that the pastors in PTMAN will offer their sanctuaries as Safe Spots, or places where young people between the ages of 13 and 18 can “come and exhale,” adding that “perhaps the time they spend at a Safe Spot would be

sufficient enough for them to re-calibrate their emotions.

There will be no condemnation and no prying into their business. We will be an ear, if requested. Furthermore, we will not be performing counseling sessions.”

The PTMAN flyer announcing the availability of the ministry states that the mission of Safe Spots is “to provide a place for our youth to go when they’re in need of consolation and comfort during the summer.”

Rev. Persia Allen explained that many churches throughout Proviso Township will open their doors to “provide consolation services and resource information.”

He added that Urban First Responders, an initiative that PTMAN offers to mitigate conflict and prevent violence, will be available between 4:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. The participating churches include: In addition to Safe Spots, PTMAN has also instituted a Summer Youth Program in which young people can intern in local businesses for four weeks. Rev. Albert Johnson, who coordinates the program, said that 20 students are enrolled so far and that 30 area business are partnering with PTMAN, including Forest Park National Bank and Belmont Village in Oak Park.

“We are anticipating another awesome, safe and productive summer for our youth,” Johnson said.

Betsy Ross staff explore new teaching strategy Teachers experiment with cognitively-guided instruction

Elizabeth Seery stands to the side of her second-story, second-grade classroom at Betsy Ross Elementary School, watching her 14 students warm up with math practice on a recent Wednesday afternoon. Students are tasked with figuring out what 82 minus 56 equals, and can use any strategy they deem most fitting, including referencing a hundreds chart, regrouping the equation, subtracting from an open number line among other methods.

“We’re always trying to be very efficient,” Seery tells the class, urging them to use the strategy that most effectively solves the problem. After about five minutes, students partner up and explain their strategy to their partner. Classmates Lawrence and Jake volunteer to come to the front of the class and use an overhead projector to explain how they solved the problem. Lawrence used a number line to solve his problem — subtracting 56 from 82 in increments of 10 and then two — but made a mistake at the end.

“You want to use a tool, or are you OK?” Jake asks Lawrence, helping him solve his problem.

“I like how you picked friendlier numbers,” said his classmate Nora, referring to his use of easy-to-subtract numbers like two and four. “I like how you didn’t just do ones, you did two and four.”

“Are mistakes a big deal?” Seery asks her students, who immediately respond by yell-

ing, “No, they’re proof that we’re learning.”

Seery’s method of letting students guide instruction is part of a new teaching strategy Betsy Ross staff are employing for the first time this year, an approach that differs markedly from how math, science, English and art were taught at the school a decade ago. Staff came together to update their methods to reflect the new state standards, which require students to explain their process for solving a problem, rather than simply offering the correct answer.

“Defining it kind of helps give us that identity and ownership for the staff. They’re able to identify it and it’s their own and that’s the key. It’s our approach. It’s not just an approach — this is how we approach it at Betsy Ross School and it kind of builds a camaraderie,” said Principal Bill Milnamow, adding that defining the strategy also helped staff talk to each other and to staff across buildings about how they teach, which standardizes expectations. Milnamow was unsure if other schools in the district had similarly defined new teaching methods.

“Clarity was key for the staff; that was a big part of it,” he said. “It also helped everybody understand that we’re in the same boat, so the teachers now know what the expectations are, not only for themselves but for everybody in the building.”

About 10 years ago, inspired by the state’s adoption of next-generation science standards, Betsy Ross teachers started analyzing how they were teaching reading. Four years later, they looked at how they were teaching

math. And three years ago, teachers started reflecting on how they were teaching science. But this year is the first year Betsy Ross staff came together to redefine their entire approach to teaching.

“In class we ask the kids to explain their reasoning, and explain how they did this, and we did the same thing with the staff.

Doing that helped explain our approach to teaching,” Milnamow said. “We had a lot of deep conversations about our approach to teaching when creating this document, just like we did in the classroom. So what the students are doing, we as a staff did as well.”

Betsy Ross teachers employ cognitivelyguided instruction, an approach that guides student thinking on solving the problem, rather than simply pushing one strategy to come to the answer. Students are given opportunities to share with and learn from their peers, and the teacher’s job is to listen and question students based on what she sees and hears.

“If you were to go back 10 years ago, what we were concerned about is, ‘can the kids answer the questions correctly?’ and that was the understanding across education,” Milnamow said. “If they can come up with the correct answers, then we don’t care how they got it, and they came up with the answer, so they must know it. What we realized is that they can come up with the correct answer but they really don’t understand how, and that was a part of the shift.”

This approach, he said, should increase

state test scores, since under the new test system students must explain their answers rather than simply giving the correct one.

This approach also caters to students of all levels, he added, since “instead of going for easier problems for the low kids, and hard problems for the high kids, they all worked on the same problem. But the strategies they used got more complex as they went up.”

James Elder, D91’s director of innovation instruction, said this approach also aligns with the district’s Positive Behavioral Intervention System, a disciplinary system that focuses on behavioral consequences, including rewards for good behavior as well as punishments for bad.

“The approach to teaching develops out of a philosophy of how students learn, and that learning is an integrated social experience,” Elder said. “We don’t just learn about science in isolation, or math in isolation, but there’s a philosophy about how students are learning that content and how it makes the most sense, that’s really authentic and applies in real-life situations where students can make connections with their own experiences and bring that into the classroom and then build on those experiences.”

He noted how safe students felt in Seery’s classroom, referring to students’ praise of each other’s work, acceptance of their mistakes, and gentle advice to one another on how to solve the problem.

“That is an experience we want all of our students to have and that to become more of a common experience across all the way through eighth grade,” Elder said. “When they get into that mathematics classroom, whether they are in second grade or they’re working on algebra in eighth grade, that is still the expectation for students as far as what their role is in the classroom.”

Honoring veterans from page 1 a student pilot. Gillian explained that the AT-6 was the type of plane that pilots used to learn combat flying. After the AT-6, they would advance to train further on whatever planes they would eventually fly in combat.

His plane was used primarily by the U.S. Air Force and later by the Marines.

Other planes Gillian has owned include a Bonanza, a Pitts S2B, a Super Decathlon and a Columbia 350. He said he also has “had the honor” to fly as a co-pilot on a B-25 and fly three TBM Avengers for various people around the country.

One of the Avengers Gillian has flown flew off the Vella Golf, an escort aircraft carrier also called a “jeep carrier” or “baby flattop,” in the Pacific during WWII. He said patchmarks on the plane cover bullet holes from battle.

The escort carrier was typically half the length and a third the displacement of larger fleet carriers.

“It’s a very historic airplane,” Gillian said of the Avenger, noting that George H.W. Bush was flying an Avenger when he was shot down over the Pacific in WW2. “I get the honor of flying it occasionally.”

From 1944 to 1958, 15,000 AT-6 planes were manufactured. Gillian explained that the “really prolific airplane” was used by the U.S. in Korea and Vietnam for forward air controlling and that many countries also used it as a ground attack airplane. It was used at some point by almost every country that had airplanes in many dif different roles. His airplane was manufactured in 1944 and helped train “hundreds of pilots” for the war, he said. The South African Air Force used the AT-6 extensively until the mid-1990s.

In addition to participating in the Salute to Veterans air show, Gillian serves as air operations officer of the event.

What Gillian and another plane owner started in 2015 as an opportunity for the owners of Avengers to gather and share maintenance tips has grown to a “full-on air show.” He said the goal is to bring in “as many as possible” of the 15 to 20 Avengers still flying.

Gillian said the Salute to Veterans’ purpose is reflected in its name, with veterans bused in from veterans’ homes around Peru and highlighted by a military veterans’ parade.

“We do our best to make them feel special,” he explained. “We want people to take a moment and think about the thousands and thousands of people who have died for our country.”

Gillian said air show organizers donate a “fair amount” of the proceeds to local veterans’ groups with over $7,000 donated since the inaugural show.

Although he did not serve in the military himself, veterans are important to Gillian.

“I just fly their airplanes and understand their importance,” he said. “We do it for the veterans. We want young people to understand the sacrifice of veterans, especially those of WWII. “When I first started, we would get veterans at every air show. Now that rarely happens.”

One of the veterans who came to the Salute to Veterans Air Show in Peru in 2018 was Bill Kramer.

Gillian said that Kramer’s family told him that Kramer had flown 81 supply missions over “the Hump” in a DC3 during WW2, the nickname Allied pilots gave the airlift operation that crossed the Himalayan foothills into China.

It was the Army Air Force’s most dangerous airlift route, but it was the only way to supply Chinese forces fighting Japan.

Gillian said that age and time had dwindled Kramer’s memory. But seeing the plane “clicked in his mind,” according to Gillian, who described how he could see the memories flooding Kramer’s thoughts as he gripped the wing while still in his wheelchair.

“That is exactly why we fly these airplanes,” Gillian said.

In addition to participating in air shows and events around the Midwest, Gillian’s plans this summer include the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) AirVenture Oshkosh in July.

Called the largest air show of its kind in the world, the event is held annually in the small Wisconsin town of Oshkosh. Last year’s show attracted over 600,000 people and

approximately 10,000 aircraft. During the gathering, the airport’s control tower is the busiest in the world. According to the event website, the air show attracts the world’s best aerobatic pilots and a roster of legendary American military aircraft in history, from iconic World War II airplanes to today’s most sophisticated flying machines.

As a member of Warbirds of America, Gillian not only flies in the air show but he also narrates the guided tours of the WWIIera military aircraft at the event.

He calls the collection of WWII-era aircraft “the world’s largest history museum” and notes it is the largest such collection.

His message to tram-riders is simple.

“I want them to understand this was not just a war effort, it was an entire country pulling together,” he said. “It was the men at war and the women working in the factories, leaving their kids at home alone.”

Gillian said he has participated in the Oshkosh air show every year since he bought his plane and received a special invitation to this year’s air show, which celebrates the 50th anniversary of the first EAA air show in Oshkosh, since his AT-6 was at the first event, although under a different owner.

The first EAA air show was held in 1953 in Milwaukee. It also was held in Rockford for 11 years before moving to Oshkosh.

Gillian has been flying since the late 1970s.

“I just thought I would like the challenge of learning,” he said.

He said he and his airplane are generally

invited to participate in air shows.

“Typically they come to you,” he said, noting that event organizers will pay for fuel, food and lodging and provide a car.

Occasionally an event will provide an appearance fee but Gillian said he’s just “doing it for fun and trying to break even.”

He said he and his fellow pilots usually fly in formation at air shows because that’s what spectators like to see. He said the first thing pilots do when they arrive for an air show is practice flying in formations.

He said multiple certifications are required to fly. In addition to a pilot’s license, which Gillian said has no expiration, he’s required to renew his medical certificate annually. He also is required to have training to fly formations in front of people, which must be recertified annually.

He said FAA officials are at every air show to check all pilots’ credentials.

Calling flying “quite a discipline,” Gillian said it takes “hours and hours” of practice.

His plane cruises at 160 miles per hour. With a 110-gallon fuel tank, he can travel three hours, usually at 3,000 or 4,000 feet, before needing to refuel.

He flies approximately 100 hours per year.

He flies year-round although the majority of his flying comes during the summer. He estimated that he flies an average of two or three times a month but weekly during the summer.

“The summer is more intense,” he said.

“But it’s a lot of fun.”

Hitting the road from page 1 manager at his Downers Grove company, described his dream to him and asked if there was a way to combine traveling around the country and still working for the same company—a way “to morph my position into something that I was better at, enjoyed more, and in which I was making a bigger contribution.”

To Watson’s delight, his manager suggested that they “test drive” the idea. So, between October and December last year, he worked two to three weeks a month from his RV, even working from his driveway if not roaming around the country.

The willingness of both parties to be creative and take a risk seems to have resulted in a win for both.

“I support three managing directors in our sales and marketing efforts, while driving around the country,” said Watson, “and produce corporate customer events that are pivotal to our company’s growth. My CEO’s only mandate was ‘no excuses for missing work or meetings because you don’t have internet connections.’”

To make sure he kept that part of the agreement, the digital nomad acquired four different internet connections to ensure that he could do his job anywhere in North America that has good cellular coverage.

“Overall, it is working out better than my wildest dreams,” Watsons said, admitting that they were lofty. “Now, on a daily basis, I explore, learn, share, and contribute instead of being ‘chained’ to a corporate cubical without a lot of satisfaction at the end of the day.”

“My biggest ‘problem’,” he said with a laugh, “is getting

And that’s just a few.

Watson posts two stories weekly on his website named “Go Small. Live Large!,” and on YouTube under the same name, articulating what he’s learned. The subtitle on the website explains the content: “Sharing stories about interesting PLACES, fascinating PEOPLE, VANLIFE in a Travato GL, and working as a digital nomad.”

He said he’s met people who have emailed from him after watching his videos. He said he’s also met people and found parking through a website called Boondockers Welcome, which allows members—for $59 per year—to book overnight parking at the homes of hosts who are members.

“The overnight stays,” he said, “usually turn into story sharing over a glass of wine, with coffee in the morning.

One couple in Chattanooga even invited me to stay for Easter dinner. They come from all walks of life, but the common denominator is a desire to make an authentic connection and have a sense of adventure and exploration.”

Watson’s partner, Kyle, doesn’t enjoy “living small,” so he spends most of his time at their Lake Worth, Florida homebase of operations, and then, when Watson is in a place that interests him, like New Orleans, he’ll take a flight there and join him for a weekend.

The RV adventurer has visited many places, seen beautiful landscapes, met interesting people, and also learned a lot about himself on his journey.

Over the last three months, he’s learned to use his video camera to tell stories and educate viewers; loved exploring, smelling, tasting and touching new things, particularly after he realized how disconnected he was from nature; learned that being alone is very different than being lonely; and become a better listener and communicator.

Perhaps, most importantly, he said, “I’m at peace with myself, again learning and sharing.”

Talk up our schools

F

orest Park’s elementary schools have a good story to tell. And finally they are figuring out that it is a story that won’t tell itself. In a time when negative energy permeates our entire culture, when social media is the coursing path of simple-minded meanness and inaccuracy, whether the topic is national politics or local school test scores, Forest Park’s District 91 elementary and middle schools have, too often, been on the receiving end.

Beware and reject any Facebook comment that looks longingly back at a D91 utopia that never existed. Just last week there was a comment lamenting that things haven’t been the same since “Art and Joe.” This is a reference to Art Jones and Joe Scolire who served as superintendents well back into the last century.

Give it up, folks. Snap out of it. It’s 2019. Our schools are good. Everyone acknowledges they’re not great. There are problems; there are challenges. But the number one problem we see generally in public education is stagnation and that is nowhere in evidence in this school district.

In an annual State of the District presentation, May 15, Supt. Louis Cavallo and colleagues explained the wide range of initiatives the small district is taking to confront its challenges.

This year we are enthusiastic about the determined effort to embed racial equity into all aspects of life in our schools — cue the FB comments about the good old days when all the students were white and above average. The “equity imperative” is bold and necessary. The next year will see every staff member in the district receive training in how to be open to the reality of how race plays out every day in our schools and in our lives.

As Cavallo said, “It’s more than an equity imperative; it’s a moral imperative; it’s the right thing to do.”

D91 continues to take a wide range of steps — curriculum revisions, added math coaches, class scheduling more focused on math, new ways of assessing students to make faster adjustments — that make plain a determination to improve the education of every student in the district.

The troubling drop in enrollment is offering up the opportunity for the district to expand much-needed preschool seats as well as more after-school programs.

The second year of the Power Scholars Academy summer program is exciting on so many fronts. The partnership between Forest Park and River Forest public schools is groundbreaking. The key role played in this program by the West Cook YMCA is gratifying.

The district has also finally grasped that it is responsible for shaping the perception of these schools in our community, and among potential D91 families. New efforts at telling the story of our schools in the community and engaging the wider community — think Kindness Week — are starting to work. And Cavallo, whose reputation among district families as being accessible and connective is weak, made a fundamental request last week of those families. “Talk up our schools,” he said.

We believe these schools have earned that. We know that the trash talk that has been delivered in the past by some prominent people in town has been destructive and unfair.

Everyone in town, from Mayor Hoskins to landlords to merchants, would do well to talk up our schools.

T

Joe Biden, SNAGs and discomfort

his column is in response to the — at last count — eight women who said they felt “uncomfortable” when Joe Biden touched them in one way or another.

First, some personal history, which I think a lot of men who live in this town can relate to. About 20 years ago a woman called me a “SNAG.” “A what?” I asked.

“A SNAG,” she replied. “You know. A ‘Sensitive New Age Guy.’” I took it as a compliment.

I also received it as a confirmation that old dogs can learn new tricks.

You see, I was born in 1947 and the models held up to me for what it means to be a man were roles in movies played by actors like John Wayne as Rooster Cogburn in True Grit, Rocklin in Tall in the Saddle, and Sgt. John Stryker in The Sands of Iwo Jima. Strong, silent types. Men who expressed love by their actions rather than words. Cowboys and soldiers.

The following joke could be told in the 1960s. “Did you hear about the Northern European man who loved his wife so much that once he almost told her?”

Men were from Mars and Women were from Venus. Women’s work was homemaking and nurturing children; men’s work was being successful in a career and earning a living. Mary Tyler Moore’s role in The Dick Van Dyke Show was that of a stay-at-home mom.

But then feminism and other social tremors hit the American cultural fan, and role expectations began to change.

Many women became more aggressive.

They talked about breaking through the glass ceiling that limited how far they could climb the ladder of success in corporate America.

In The Mary Tyler Moore Show, which came after The Dick Van Dyke Show, Mary was an independent, single, professional woman.

And, in addition to demanding more from society, women began to ask more of the men in their lives.

They asked us men for emotional intimacy, in addition to paying the bills and sex. They asked us to share our feelings, in addition to standing for principles and being good providers.

And so, in response to these new role expectations, I and five other guys formed a men’s group in the late 1980s.

Just a few quotes from our mission statement reveal why that woman called me a SNAG. Meeting dynamics include trust in the group members to support an atmosphere of safety, respect and confidentiality where we can be open and vulnerable without fear of being shamed; Where we can safely bare our soul; Where we are non-competitive; Where worth is not determined by performance.

Where the topics chosen must allow the speaker to

share his issues, feelings, emotions…with the rest of the group.

In the almost 30 years since I began participating in that group’s weekly meetings, all of us have changed. We’ve changed not only in terms of our behavior but also have become more willing to be vulnerable and share our feelings.

At his 42nd birthday party, my son said to me, “Dad, I know that you always loved me, but when I was growing up, I did not feel close to you … not like I do now.”

You see? In some ways, Joe Biden embodies what a lot of us Baby Boomer men heard our women asking for. Unlike the present occupant of the Oval Office, Joe Biden is a SNAG. So when I hear women criticizing the former vice president for expressing emotion, I think, “But, but that’s what you were asking from us 30 years ago and now you are complaining that we’ve complied.”

And when I hear Biden being criticized for being too touchy-feeling, no one ever says he has done anything wrong. What they say is, “He made me feel uncomfortable.”

So, a few words about discomfort.

First, not feeling comfortable is not the same thing as being wronged. Comfort is not an ethical but a psychological category and that distinction must always be made clear. I’ve noticed a tendency among many these days to relativize what begin as ethical questions into statements of comfort or discomfort.

For example, people from other cultures often behave in ways that “make me respond” by feeling uncomfortable. When I feel that irritation in multicultural situations, God often comes to me and says, “You seem upset, my son.”

“Well,” I complain, “they’re not doing things the right way.”

“Ah,” says God. “What you mean is that they are not doing things your way.”

And so I wrote a column years ago with the headline, “If you are comfortable, it’s not multicultural.”

Bottom line — discomfort is my problem, not yours.

If you haven’t done anything wrong and I’m feeling uncomfortable, either I am hung up on my way of doing things and can’t adapt, or I need to take responsibility for my feelings and let you know where I’m at, without making a moral judgment.

If you are uncomfortable with another person’s behavior and he has not done anything wrong, don’t go public with your discomfort when it’s your problem, but take responsibility for your feelings and tell that person, face to face.

To paraphrase the Serenity Prayer: “God grant me the serenity to take responsibility for how I feel; the courage to fight for what’s right against what’s wrong; and the wisdom to know the difference.”
