Violence interrupter releases new book on life

“In Deep” explores local resident’s self-destructive childhood

A ‘Ghost’ that finally came to life

’m pleased to announce our book, The Ghost of Cleopatra, has been published. It’s like having a baby after being in labor for 27 years. I can’t wait to show off the kid.

I wouldn’t have even found the story, if the Review hadn’t assigned me to cover it back in 1992. Since that time, I’ve wanted the world to know about Edmonia Lewis and her statue.

I would never have co-written a book, though, if Gail Tanzer hadn’t walked into my kitchen.

She was accompanied by Jean M. Pierre, who became a valuable team member. J.P. researched 19th-century forms of transportation and mapped out the travels of Edmonia, born in New York of Haitian descent. A native of Haiti, JP also gave us vital information about Haitian history, culture and customs.

Gail had already published biographies of prominent sculptors, so she knew how to write in book-length form. I had never written anything longer than a two-page article.

Gail kept us on a tight writing schedule — a new chapter every two weeks. It took us nine months to complete the first draft, so it was a full-term manuscript.

Like most newborns, it had some excess fat, in our case about 100 pages. Nevertheless, it was accepted by the first publisher we approached. We worked with the publisher for a year and revised it six times. We also supplied the images and had it formatted into book form. All the publisher had to

What’s next for Forest Park’s longest-serving mayor Calderone plans to spend more time with grandsons

W

hen he was first elected mayor in 1999 Anthony Calderone had no idea that he would serve as mayor for the next 20 years, becoming the longest-serving mayor in village history. He merely wanted to get his hometown moving again and stop what he considered the decay of the town. But once in office he found that he loved the job, and he also seemed to enjoy the power that came with it. He went on to serve five terms and defeated four opponents along the way, parting with an emotional goodbye at the May 13 Village Council meeting.

On Monday night he spoke with the Forest Park Review in an extended telephone interview about his time in office and what it feels like to no longer hold the post.

Calderone said that he immensely enjoyed being mayor, which is likely no surprise to anyone who ever watched him preside over a meeting.

“My heart, gut, soul was all the way in to being mayor,” Calderone told the Review.

“Forest Park’s been my life and (being) mayor ended up becoming my passion. I never thought I would be mayor 20 years but after you start serving and you find out that you can do good at what you’re doing it tends to grow on you so I truly feel like I left part of my heart at the village.”

Calderone said that he takes pride in the revitalization of Madison Street, the professionalization of village operations, and all sorts of improvements to Forest Park.

Very few ever questioned Calderone’s love for Forest Park, where he has lived his entire life.

“I think Tony was a good mayor,” said Calderone’s successor Rory Hoskins, who started as an ally of Calderone’s but later turned a critic. “I think he certainly cared about Forest Park. He knew Forest Park very well.”

Calderone prided himself on being a mayor who got things done. He wasn’t afraid to get his hands dirty.

After a terrible flood in 2011, garbage and water damaged furniture piled up around town. When the village’s waste hauler couldn’t send a truck out to help Calderone took matters into his own hands and quickly arranged for the village to hire a garbage truck to come out. And Calderone spent a long day walking behind the garbage truck tossing all kinds of things into it.

“I never ever thought I would end up working behind a garbage truck,” Calderone said at his last Village Council meeting.

While Calderone might have dropped out of Proviso East High School, he used his business smarts and hard work to benefit the village. He dropped by Village Hall al-

Calderone defeated Steinbach winning 53.42 percent of the vote and bitter feelings lingered. But they might be thawing a bit.

“Recently she started to wave to me, so maybe that’s a good sign,” Calderone said.

Calderone won his last two mayoral races by similar solid but not large margins, defeating Marty Tellalian with 53.78 percent of the vote in 2011 and winning 52.01 percent of the vote to defeat Chris Harris in 2015.

Calderone said that age, he is 63, not fear of defeat was the main reason he decided not to run for another term as mayor.

“As time marches on the community changes, in people, in business, in revenues and, let’s face it, I’m not getting any younger and so the ability to put in, literally, between the couple hats I was wearing easily 80 hours a week,” Calderone said. “That gets a little more challenging as time marches on so that was a factor.”

A few days before the April election Calderone endorsed Harris, even though the two had a bitter race between them four years ago and had feuded on social media. Some felt that Calderone’s support of Harris was more of a rebuke to his competitor Hoskins, rather than an actual endorsement of Harris’ candidacy.

“Campaigns are always spirited and time, I believe, sometimes mends, heals wounds and certainly I felt that Chris matured in the last four years and frankly he asked for my support,” Calderone said of his decision to endorse Harris. “Chris was the only one that personally asked me for my support.”

Calderone, who was strongly supported by this newspaper when he ran for mayor in 1999, has had an often difficult and contentious relationship with the Forest Park Review for at least the past 12 years. At times Calderone has refused to talk to the Review.

He could be very sensitive to criticism.

Calderone said that he simply got tired of dealing with a constantly changing cast of editors and felt that some of them just assumed that there was wrongdoing going on.

“The editor’s position has been like a revolving door and there’s been good ones and there’s been some not good ones,” Calderone said.

Calderone said that some Review editors just assumed that wrongdoing was going on and didn’t carefully check their facts.

“But if you’re going to be an investigative reporter thinking that there’s always something kinky going on, I think it’s best that you always do your fact checking,” Calderone said.

He said he also got tired of having to educate a new editor every couple of years, or even more frequently.

Proviso track stars qualify for state On May 16, Proviso East High School, 807 S. 1st Ave. in Maywood, hosted the 3A Boys Track and Field Sectionals. Several athletes from Proviso Township High Schools District 209 performed well enough to qualify for the state competition, which will be held May 23 through May 25, at Eastern Illinois University.

Proviso West Panther Kyshun Robinson qualified for state in the long jump while Panthers Jalon Jones, Isiah Guider, Katrell Askins and Kyshun Robinson qualified in the 4×400-meter dash relay after taking first place in that event.

Askins also qualified for the 400-meter dash. Proviso East Pirate Isaiah Tyler qualified for state in the long jump.

Proviso West placed fifth as a team while Proviso East placed sixth. The two track and field squads were separated by three points.

Calderone has left office after presiding over a few years of budget deficits. Forest Park has run budget deficits largely because of declining sales tax revenue, Calderone said. Calderone also angered those on both sides of the controversial video gaming issue first by not pushing for it and then quietly supporting adding it in 2016 in the face of an advisory referendum that opposed it by a two to one margin in 2013. Voters eliminated video gambling in a binding referendum last year and Calderone said that village will miss the revenue that video gambling generated, especially given the village’s budget problems.

But that’s not his problem anymore.

Looking ahead Calderone will spend more time with his two grandsons, one aged three and another who was born about a month ago.

He says it will take time for him to get accustomed to not being mayor.

“I need to just decompress,” Calderone said. “I am certainly not going to be showing up at meetings. I don’t think that’s my place.

There’s a new regime there now and it’s up to them to do whatever the future of Forest Park is going to be.”

Second activist announces bid to succeed Davis Kina Collins files papers to run for 7th Congressional District seat

Another candidate has announced her run for the Illinois 7th Congressional District seat. Gun violence prevention advocate Kina Collins filed the paperwork establishing her candidacy on May 13, her campaign announced.

According to the statement her campaign released, Collins, a native of Chicago’s Austin community, co-authored legislation signed into law in 2018 that established the Illinois Council on Women and Girls — a body that advises the governor on gender policies in Illinois.

Some of the goals of the council include helping to end the gender pay gap, bolstering legal protections against workplace sexual harassment, and confronting domestic violence, among others.

Currently, Collins is a national organizer with Physicians for a National Health Program — a 20,000-member organization comprising medical doctors, medical students and other health care professionals who support universal, singlepayer health insurance.

She’s also a leader with Generation Progress — a progressive research and advocacy group created by the Center for American Progress, a liberal public policy think tank — and the founder of the Chicago Neighborhood Alliance.

In her role with Generation Progress, Collins worked to launch the Beyond the Gun Campaign, a national violence prevention initiative.

In her statement, she said the 7th Congressional District,

“the most diverse” in the state, has “some of the greatest disparities in the country. The residents of our district deserve a fighter. We deserve full access to quality health care, neighborhoods and school zones free of gun violence, and reforms to a criminal justice system that disproportionately targets the lives of men and women of color.”

On her campaign website, Collins advocates for the implementation of a single-payer Medicare for All health care system, supports safe and legal abortions, calls for the defunding Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and supports a $15 federal minimum wage. Collins’ campaign noted that a full policy platform will be available on the Kina Collins website in the fall.

In February 2018, Collins quit her position with the campaign of then-candidate for governor, J.B. Pritzker, over racially insensitive comments he made about black politicians, namely Secretary of State Jesse White and former Senate President Emil Jones, during a leaked phone conversation with then-governor Rod Blagojevich.

“The 26-year-old Austin resident joined Pritzker’s cam-

paign last November as a West Side organizer,” according to an ABC 7 report published at the time. “But when she heard the tapes from 2009 where Pritzker and Rod Blagojevich were talking about possible candidates to fill Barack Obama’s Senate seat and Pritzker called Jesse White the ‘least offensive’ black candidate and Emil Jones too ‘crass,’ Collins quit the Pritzker campaign.”

“It was the thought of having to come back to my community and defend those comments which I couldn’t reconcile with, and so because of that I had to draw a line in the sand and leave the campaign,” Collins told reporters.

Collins is at least the second candidate under 40 to publicly announce a bid to succeed the powerful Danny K. Davis, the 7th District’s longtime incumbent. Oak Park teacher and activist Anthony Clark announced last month that he would make a second bid for the office.

Davis beat Clark, 74-26 percent, in the Democratic Primary election on March 20, 2018. Davis has so far not publicly unannounced his intentions. The next Democratic Party primaries are in 2020.

Kiwanis awards inaugural Andy Collis scholarships The Kiwanis Club of Forest Park presented two college-bound Forest Parkers with the first-ever Andy Collis Community Service Award at the organization’s annual pasta dinner fundraiser on May 18.

Xavier Skinner, a soon-to-be graduate of Walther Christian Academy in Melrose Park, received $3,000 to go toward his education at Triton College. Dylan Bartlett, who attended St. Patrick High School in Chicago, was awarded $3,000 for his education at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota.

Collis’ wife Virginia and son Jimmy presented students with the awards, which recognize students’ academic performance, as well as their community service work. It was named after the late Andy Collis, a longtime Kiwanian, school bus driver, and village treasurer. Collis died in July 2018 at age 86.

The award was funded through a gift from the Sorice family, local entrepreneurs who own a number of bars in Forest Park.

Two charged in police chase A Chicago police chase ended in Forest Park around 2:20 p.m. on May 15, with officers arresting two people while a third eluded capture, according to Forest Park Police Chief Tom Aftanas. Forest Park schools were placed on lockdown for about 20 minutes during the chase as a precaution.

Aftanas said Chicago police chased a stolen vehicle involved in an armed robbery down the Eisenhower Expressway about 1:50 p.m. The vehicle had been carjacked somewhere near Malcolm X College in Chicago the day before, Aftanas said, and had been involved in “at least” four armed robberies in Chicago since that time.

After being chased down the Eisenhower, the vehicle exited the interstate and pulled over at the intersection of Dunlop Avenue and York Street in Forest Park, where three people got out of the car and started running, Aftanas said.

Chicago police were able to immediately get two of the people in custody, according to Aftanas. A spokesman for the Chicago Police Department said a 17-year-old received two felony counts of robbery, a felony charge for aggravated possession of a stolen vehicle, and a felony charge for aggravated battery.

Chicago police also charged Joshua Walker, 19, of Chicago with a felony robbery, aggravated possession of a stolen vehicle, aggravated fleeing, misdemeanor for driving on a suspended license, and multiple traffic citations. The third individual ran away.

Shortly after the arrest, Forest Park police spotted a Chevy Malibu traveling at a high rate of speed north on Desplaines Avenue toward Harrison Street, Aftanas said. Police chased it east on Harrison Street, north on Harlem Avenue and eventually to Lake Street in Oak Park.

At that point, Aftanas said the officers received a call from the Chicago Police Department that the car was not involved in the earlier armed robbery. Forest Park police

abandoned the chase as the car traveled east toward Chicago.

“Our chase policy says we chase for a forceable felony, which includes armed robbery. If we don’t know why the car is fleeing, we terminate,” Aftanas said, adding that the policy is designed to protect officers, pedestrians, other motorists and offenders.

“On Lake Street, where there’s shoppers and only one lane of traffic in each direction, there’s going to be a car crash,” Aftanas said.

Eventually, Chicago police called the Forest Park police and said the car officers were chasing was involved in the initial incident.

They said the third individual ran from the stolen car at Lathrop Avenue and York Street and, at some point, hopped into the car.

Man steals car from car wash David Rios was charged with felony motor vehicle theft about 4:20 p.m. on May 13, after he allegedly stole a Ford Expedition from Spotless Carwash, 7802 Madison St. The victim told police he was washing his car and left the keys in the vehicle when Rios, 42, of Arlington Heights, jumped in and drove away. A witness told officers she saw the vehicle head east and strike two large planters at the intersection of Madison Street and Desplaines Avenue.

Oak Park police then spotted the car driving east near Austin Boulevard and Madison Street at a high rate of speed. They pulled the car over at Jimmy’s Food and Deli, and Rios jumped out of the car and ran in an unknown direction. Chicago police later found and arrested him in an alley at Leamington Avenue and Madison Street.

Rios told police he had been arrested for burglary in Maywood a day before and was released on an I-bond on May 13. He said he walked by Spotless Carwash but denied ever being in the vehicle.

SCHOLARSHIP: Two college-bound students received $3,000 awards.

Serial burglar charged Christopher Adams, 27, was charged with burglary, after attempting to break into a Chevrolet parked on the 600 block of Grove Lane at 10:22 a.m. on May 19.

Multiple witnesses told police they saw Adams walk up and tamper with the door handles of the parked car. Adams told police he is homeless and he knew what he was doing was wrong because he had been arrested for burglarizing vehicles multiple times before.

Slumped over steering wheel with weapon Police spotted Kameron Hooper slumped over the wheel of his parked Chevrolet Malibu about 12:13 a.m. on May 19 on the 7500 block of Harvard Avenue.

When officers knocked on the window, Hooper, 31, of Waukegan, didn’t respond.

Police opened the unlocked driver’s side door, and Hooper immediately woke up.

He refused medical attention, refused to exit the Chevrolet Malibu and kept his head slumped between his legs. Officers smelled cannabis in the car. After several requests, Hooper got out of the car. Police spotted a vaping device and blunt in the center console of the vehicle. As officers reached for the items, they noticed an empty pistol magazine.

Hooper told police he had a 9mm pistol under the driver’s seat. Officers recovered the gun, as well as four rounds of ammunition and a chambered round. Hooper did not hold a concealed carry license, but did have a firearm owner’s identification (FOID) card.

He was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, as well as local ordinance citations for possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Traffic stop reveals gun, booze, cash Police spotted a Ford without a front license plate traveling “substantially faster” than other cars around it at 11:29 p.m. on May 18 on the 500 block of Harlem Avenue.

A registration check revealed the driver to have a suspended driver’s license.

Officers curbed the vehicle in the car wash parking lot at Harlem and Lexington. The driver provided police with a paper driver’s license — saying that it might be suspended, but he wasn’t sure — and said he had no insurance. He told police he was leaving a party but that he hadn’t drunk any alcohol. He denied having any illegal items in the vehicle.

Police asked him to exit the vehicle. Instead, the man opened his glove compartment, rummaged through and then ate a piece of gum. While he was digging through the compartment, officers spotted what appeared to be an open bottle of cognac in the backseat. Officers again asked if he had any illegal items in the car.

The man handed police his cellphone and $1,360 in cash from his pocket. Police searched the car and uncovered a loaded semi-automatic handgun in the glove compartment. The man said he was on his way to the firing range and had withdrawn the money from a bank. He later said he was on his way home from his goddaughter’s party in Tinley Park, and had drunk alcohol.

He did not hold a concealed carry license, but did have a FOID card. The man received a misdemeanor charge for unlawful use of a weapon, driving while his license was suspended, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, illegal transportation of alcohol, and display plate attachment.

Eight spools of copper wire stolen Between 10 a.m. on May 10 and 9 a.m. on May 16, someone stole eight spools of copper wire from the ComEd substation, 769 Desplaines Ave. An employee told police the copper wire was valued at $24,000 total.

These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Forest Park Police Department, May 13-20, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded.

Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

Now of Forest Park, Bianca is a data specialist and violence interrupter for Cure Violence, previously known as CeaseFire, an anti-violence program at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) that was the subject of the 2011 documentary, The Interrupters.

Bianca, along with writer Linda Beckstrom, recently released a book about her life titled, In Deep: How I Survived Gangs, Heroin, and Prison to Become a Chicago Violence Inter Interrupter, which details her time in Oak Park and Forest Park — where she now organizes an annual Christmas gift drive for homeless children. Last year, she raised $900 for presents that she hand-wrapped and delivered to those living in shelters.

“When I was about 20 years old, and I was already pretty deep into my destruction mode by 20, people would say like, ‘Get your life together. What are you going to do when you get old?’” Bianca recalled. “I was always like, ‘Oh I don’t have to worry, I’m going to write a book.”

Growing up in the Little Italy neighborhood in Chicago, Bianca said her mother left in the middle of the night when she was just 5. The child of a strict Sicilian family, she said her parents were cheating on each other and, per Sicilian tradition, the mother must leave her household when leaving the relationship. Bianca remembers waking up in the middle of the night and seeing her mother with a suitcase.

“She told me she was going out to buy milk for my breakfast and for my cereal,” Bianca said. “I somehow knew she wasn’t coming back.”

Her grandmother raised her. Bianca would sit on the radiator and look out the window of her grandmother’s home, waiting for her mom to return. Her family felt bad and spoiled her as a distraction.

“By mid-high school, when I was dropping out, I was already hitchhiking across the country and sometimes by myself. I was fearless,” she said. “I look back and I laugh because I could picture me hitchhiking through the mountains with my backpack, and my little jean skirt on, and my jean jacket from school, and my saddle shoes.

Sometimes I’d get out of school from Oak Park and I’d [think], ‘I feel like going to California’ and I just wouldn’t even go home. I would just start hitchhiking.”

Bianca landed in Tucson, where a roommate introduced her to heroin. After a few years, she returned to the West Side of Chicago, addicted but without a reliable connection to buy the drug. “I got tired of drinking codeine cough syrup, so I was like, ‘I’m going to find some real heroin,’” she said. “I just went to Humboldt Park and made a connection and started copping from them.”

She joined the Latin Kings gang and started dealing with them, looking up to the

An official from Cure Violence noticed Bianca and was shocked that an older white woman was connecting so well with the young men. He offered her a job as a violence interrupter, which meant stopping shootings in advance by intervening in dangerous situations and building relationships. She was stationed in the far north Rogers Park neighborhood of Chicago — then-nicknamed “The Jungle” — and her new colleagues made bets about how long she would last.

“A lot of the areas we work in are African American and Latino, so to look at me you wouldn’t think I’d have credibility,” she explained.

But after a month, every kid on Howard Street was asking about Bianca.

She was promoted within the organization but is currently engaged in a federal suit against Cure Violence, alleging that UIC and program heads did not take her claims of sexual assault by a senior Cure Violence administrator seriously.

She has reunited with her children and family, an affiliate of the United Nations named her a “Goodwill Ambassador,” and she’s one math class away from finishing her college degree. Bianca would like to eventually earn her master’s in psychology from UIC and dreams of actress Sandra Bullock playing her in a movie based on the new book about her life. She lives in her grandma’s old home in Forest Park.

“A lot of people would say, ‘Oh yeah, I regret my whole past life, I wish I could do it over,’ but I don’t say that and the reason is because all that pain that I caused myself has given me the experience to save youth today,” she said. “So now I’m able to help humanity because I lived that life and recovered from it.”

Lots of summer programs for kids Opportunities abound for the children of Forest Park residents this summer to learn, develop character, be safe and have fun

Still trying to figure out the perfect summer program for your young one? Below are a few local opportunities.

Howard Mohr Community Center The Howard Mohr Community Center will hold two programs for children and teens this summer.

Summer Clubhouse at the community center is for children age kindergarten to fifth grade. The camp activities include swimming, field trips, structured games, creative projects and free play. The one-week sessions begin on June 10 and are provided every week through August 16. The cost per resident child per session is $125, and for non-residents kids $150.

Teen Clubhouse at the community center is for children in grades 6 to 9. Participants will experience everything provided in the summer clubhouse plus their own field trips and the development of leadership skills. The cost for resi-

He noted that the D91 Board of Education and administrators have spent the last year undergoing training from the National Equity Project, an Oaklandbased organization that aims to help eliminate academic achievement gaps between majority and minority students.

As a result of that training, the D91 board wrote and launched an equity imperative that charges district officials to consider how all new measures will impact those who have been historically and systematically marginalized in society. The board also made an effort to reach out to parents by hosting Engage Café monthly coffee meetups.

Administrators met together once a month to discuss equity issues in the schools, adopting Indigenous Peoples Day in place of Columbus Day, committing themselves to hiring more teachers of color, reflecting on how to make registration more accessible, and more. Next year, all staff at D91 — from teachers to bus drivers to custodians — will receive training from the National Equity Project.

“It’s more than just an equity imperative; it’s a moral imperative; it’s the right thing to do,” Cavallo said. “It impacts how everyone interacts with kids and how everyone believes what kids can do. If they don’t have a belief that all kids can achieve at high levels, they won’t.”

The district has also partnered with River Forest District 90 and the West Cook YMCA to start the Power Scholars Academy, a summer school program that provides academic and social support to at-risk students. Cavallo said Power Scholars supports D91’s academic goal of increasing its math and English Language Arts scores by 10 percent by next year.

“The state has been stagnant; they literally have not budged. The state scores have stayed the same for the last

Park District of Forest Park The Park District of Forest Park has three programs scheduled for kids of different ages.

Children who are pre-kindergarten through first-grade can enroll in Kamp Kiddie, and go on field trips, engage in arts and crafts, games, child-centered play swimming and more. All programs are focused on developing children’s gross and fine motor skills. The camper to counselor ratio is five to one.

Kids who are in grades two through five can enroll in Summer Day Camp—Unplugged!, which will include structured games, free play, swimming, arts and crafts and weekly field trips.

Weekly sessions for both camps begin June 10 and end August 12. The cost per session is $125 for residents, and $190 for non-residents.

D91 installed math coaches in every grade level this past year, reorganized the middle school schedule and committed to training teachers on formative assessing, so they can feel comfortable intervening immediately to target student needs.

Officials have also mapped D91’s curriculum across grade levels and schools to make sure it is consistent and that there are no content gaps.

Next school year, teachers will continue to receive professional development in formative assessment of students, as well as teaching strategies that help students understand and solve math problems in multiple ways. The district will also add afterschool programming for its primary students and two new sections of preschool.

“The research is really, really clear on how much better kids who have a preschool opportunity do in school, and also should over time boost our test scores. It’s also very clear through the research how much it does for those marginalized groups,” Cavallo said, noting that the additional sections of preschool could also help stymie the district’s declining enrollment, which he attributed to declining birth rates in Cook County and the village’s supply of rental housing.

“We’re in a competitive market, right? There are lots of school districts in a small geographic area. People have a choice as to where they live, and if there’s housing available, we want them to come here, so we want to make our schools as attractive as possible.”

Ed Brophy, assistant superintendent of operations, noted that D91’s low enrollment has also impacted how much money the state gives the district under the new evidencebased funding model, which the state adopted in August 2017. He said the new formula gives the district just $1,000 in new revenue each year and does not account for how many buildings are in the district. The state calculates that the district needs 1.77 buildings based on its enrollment, according to the formula, and D91 has five. It also stated that D91 is funded at 156 percent of “adequacy,” the state’s term for how much it should cost to provide a high-quality public education.

Bears Scouting Director to bring football camp to Proviso East Champ Kelly, the director of pro scouting for the Chicago Bears, is bringing his two-day CHAMP Camp to Proviso East High School, 807 S. 1st Ave. in Maywood.

The camp, which takes place June 20 through June 21, is for young people ages 10 to 18.

“CHAMP Camp teachers campers football specific skills while educating campers on important core values of a successful life,” according to information on a flyer distributed to market the camp.

“Younger campers will learn basic drills while older campers will engage in more advanced training,” the flyer said.

“Drills included one-on-ones and extensive group work.”

The camp features a range of guest speakers, including former college and NFL players and local community leaders, among others.

Campers will get a limited edition CHAMP Camp t-shirt and lunch. Registration is free if done by May 26. There is a $25 fee for those who register after May 26.

He added that if the state passes a bill to impose a property tax freeze, it would negatively impact the district’s finances.

“We don’t see a lot of new revenue from the state from the evidence-based funding model; that would severely impact our district finances,” Brophy said. “So for a district like ours, this would be very critical to our finances.”

Cavallo said the district needed to increase its test scores as a way to drive enrollment, but also called on parents to talk up the schools to neighbors. He noted that the district recently also hired a new public relations manager to help promote the district.

“Every month we are trying to promote positive aspects in the school district. You’ve seen this not only in the ads that are run on social media but also the special events, like Project Kindness, the 3K race,” said Scott Dunnell, the district’s communications manager, adding that next year the district would focus on promoting individual D91 schools and programs.

“We’ve tried to get more expansive in this first year to create more of a brand equity. So that the messages [will] be positive, they need to be regular and consistent.”

Board member Eric Connor said he thought this strategy would help combat the middle school’s poor reputation.

He also called for parents to write positive reviews of the school district on sites that families use to shop for homes.

“The middle schools always started out, ‘It was a bucket of blood over there and the discipline was running wild,’ and so there was a principal brought in who was a disciplinarian and really improved the discipline in the middle school. Then it was the scenario out there, ‘Well we got all these kids coming in from Chicago who are not residents who are taking advantage of our schools. But our schools are [supposedly] bad, so why would they?’” Connor said.

“There’s a lot of rumors out there that persist in the community by people who generally don’t have kids in the school. I don’t know hardly any parent who has a child in the school that doesn’t believe we have a really good school system.”

A bias for unions

W

ith a new mayor in office, there will be many opportunities to watch for changes in the direction and focus of our village government, some big, some small.

We got a hint about one such change last week when the Review reported on an ongoing protest by union workers at a Madison Street construction site. This is the apartment and commercial project being constructed by Michigan Avenue Real Estate Group, owned largely

by Jerry Reinsdorf, the sports mogul.

The development company chooses, when possible, to avoid hiring union workers on its projects. When possible would be when municipalities don’t turn the screws on a developer to force hiring of union workers, local workers, minority workers, to force pay levels at prevailing wages.

Forest Park lacks Home Rule authority to enforce such hiring but has also typically lacked the will to make such hiring an issue as projects move through the permitting process. The village council unanimously approved the Madison Street project 13 months ago. Former Commissioner Tom Mannix made a last-minute request for village staff to urge the developer to hire union workers but that request came late and lacked muscle.

Now with Rory Hoskins seated as mayor, it seems as if Forest Park might be ready to be more forceful in demanding that developers use union workers and follow other more progressive hiring standards on wages, benefits, safety. Hoskins has a strong connection to labor and his views come as no surprise.

When, hopefully, another notable development comes forward, we will see how persuasive Hoskins can be in bringing his village council with him down this new path which might be packaged as part of a “responsible bidder ordinance.”

Meanwhile, buried well down in last week’s coverage, was Hoskins’ casual aside that the time may come when he asks Forest Park voters to again consider Home Rule authority. When, fairly early in his 20-year tenure, former Mayor Anthony Calderone sought Home Rule powers, that referendum went down in spectacular fashion. Times, of course, change but we presume Home Rule would remain a heavy lift.

Our library launches

The bids are in, the construction contracts signed and the anticipated remaking of Forest Park’s public library is ready to begin. The six-month, $1.3 million project has many purposes: Using limited space more effectively, repurposing space to meet the dynamic needs of this modern library, and widening accessibility for all visitors.

This project has long been contemplated and library trustees have been socking away money for the effort.

Now we’ve all gotten a boost as the library has won a $50,000 grant from the state to fuel accessibility work specifically to remake restrooms constructed just before America became aware of this inequity. Of course, the library had planned to redo the restrooms but now we have help from our fellow Illinoisans. And the library has that $50,000 extra to invest in the facility or programs as this erupting gem moves forward.

Memories and the Future

hat good are memories?

Here’s what I’m getting at. Memorial Day is supposed to be a time to remember those who died in the nation’s service, but my father refused to join the VFW or go to the Memorial Day Parade back home.

He had flown 50 missions in a B-26 bomber during the Korean War, and I think, if he were alive today, he would be diagnosed as having PTSD. It was scary. On some of their bombing runs, there would be antiaircraft flak going off all around them. The memories of war haunted him.

So what do you do with the bad memories you carry around? On the one hand, bad memories, if not processed, can poison almost every interaction we have. A friend of mine and I were talking about a mutual acquaintance who always looked at the negative side of things, and my friend made the comment, “Her approach to life seems to come from unhealed pain.”

On the other hand, I know folks— most of them being senior citizens— who have gone through a lot of hard times. You know—”stony the road we trod, bitter the chastening rod.” But, somehow by God’s grace they have integrated that bitterness into their character in ways that have made them sweet and wise and patient with life.

Then there are the good memories that some folks idealize and then get stuck in. “The good old days” is what they call them. They can become, like bad memories, a prison which prevents people from moving on in life.

Good memories can also be used, of course, as a solid foundation on which folks can build their lives. That is what parents try to give their children.

And finally, there are some of us who have selective memories, folks who so closely identify with their tribe, for example, that they deny the dark side of their ancestors’ history while exaggerating their nobility.

I found a website called The Southern Agrarian in which the following paragraph appeared: “That which makes The South such a beautiful culture is sadly missing in today’s “politically correct,” multi-cultural world. It takes a conscious effort to recover that lost culture and way of life. The Southern Agrarian is where you’ll find those who try to live life with the quiet dignity that the title Gentleman or Lady calls for, while sinking our roots deep into our native Southern soil. The goal of The Southern Agrarian is to remind you and those around you that The Lost Cause was an ideal worth fighting for – and worth making a part of our lives today.”

The memories included in The Southern Agrarian are of course selective. Those who wrote the above paragraph failed to mention what another website did acknowledge.

“Southern culture valued a behavioral code in which men’s honor, based on the domination of others and the protection of southern white womanhood, stood as the highest good.

Slavery also decreased class tensions, binding whites together on the basis of race despite their inequalities of wealth.”

Mothers’ Day, which we celebrated a week and a half ago, is of course another opportunity for selective memory. The Hallmark cards we give our moms tend to be exercises in hagiography, the biography of saints or idealized persons. One comedian, after reading a card his mother received, quipped, “That ain’t the woman who raised me!”

So here’s a metaphor to consider pondering for Memorial Day. When driving from Forest Park to the Morton Arboretum, say, it’s important to look through the windshield more than through the rearview mirror.

Every once in a while it is extremely important to see what’s behind you in the mirror, especially when you are changing lanes. But to make progress, you have to look ahead more than checking up on where you’ve just been.

Clearly, it is true that those who fail to study history are bound to repeat it. But memories are meant to be spiritual foundations, on which we build the future.

Solid foundations are to be constructed when we are children. They are not meant to be lived in.

I’m not sure how to apply the above to where we in Forest Park are at as a community. We seem to be focused on what lies ahead more than where we’ve been.

And that’s good, right?

But, part of my uncertainty comes from the fact that we come from so many different psychological, cultural, religious, and geographical places that when we do look in the rear view mirror we have such diverse memories that it at times is hard to form any kind of shared identity.

If you have ever worked on a 1,000-piece jigsaw puzzle, you know that the diversity of pieces doesn’t form a unified picture without a lot of patient, hard work. Which makes me wonder as we approach Memorial Day, if we should AS A COMMUNITY invest significantly more time than we do now in coffee shops, restaurants, parks, taverns and around kitchen tables sharing memories with people we need to get to know better, to get below the surface where our spiritual foundations (aka memories) lie hidden until we share them.

But then—so we don’t get stuck in a debate about who had it worse and who was privileged—after looking in our individual rear view mirrors, we could look forward and together write a shared vision of the future of our town—a picture on the cover of the puzzle box, if you will—which will have the power to guide us in how to put all those diverse pieces fit together into an attractive, comprehensible whole.

Registration for Proviso East summer program drawing to close Registration for Proviso Township High Schools District 209’s expanded free summer programming has been open since last month and will end by June 5, D209 officials said.

During a regular meeting on March 12, the school board voted unanimously to continue and expand on last summer’s program model. In addition to offering credit recovery and accelerated courses, the district’s summer school will also include a five-week STEAM Camp for incoming freshmen.

“That program, led by one of our fabulous science teachers at Proviso West, will challenge students in a very exciting curriculum,” said Nicole Howard, the assistant superintendent for Academics and Student and Family Services.

Board members added that the teacher is also a Proviso West alum. Howard said that at the end of the summer the district will showcase the projects students complete during the STEAM camp.

Last summer, Howard, said the district provided “opportunities for credit recovery, skill development and enrichment” to approximately 1,100 students. This year, the district’s Summer Theme Camp, which features literacy and STEM components, will be opened up to sophomores.

At the March 12 meeting, Supt. Jesse Rodriguez said that the district’s summer camp has come a long way from what it was just a few years ago, when students were only offered remedial programming.

The district’s retooled and expanded summer programming, he said, will give D209 an edge over private schools and other districts in the competition for students.

Rodriguez credited district leadership, particularly the board’s Student Achievement and School Innovation committee, which is helmed by board member Claudia Medina, who works closely with Howard, for the summer program upgrades.

“This is what students need,” Rodriguez said. “Many school districts and private schools are competing with us.”

In a statement the district released on May 10, Rodriguez outlined the changes to the summer program, explaining that last summer, the district “launched an enrichment that included original credit courses in journalism, mural arts, and consumer education.

“This year, we have expanded our summer programs to include freshman STEAM programs where students must create a product and execute a real startup company.”

Students and parents can access a list of summer course offerings by clicking here. In order to enroll for original credit courses, students must meet with their counselors to obtain a registration form and return the form before the June 5 registration deadline. There is no fee for D209 students, but non-district students will be required to verify their residency and pay a course fee.

Concordia University Chicago Concordia University Chicago is offering three summer sessions.

It will hold Cougar Kids Baseball Camp for children ages 7 to 12 that will focus on “learning the game of baseball, teaching campers to be athletic and allowing them to have fun.” Each camp day will begin at 9 a.m. and end at 3 p.m. The four weeklong sessions are scheduled for June 10, 17, 24 and July 8. Concordia is also offering Creative Composer Camp for Pianists, a program scheduled for August 5 to 9 that will be available in a morning session (9 a.m. to 12 p.m.) and an afternoon session (1 to 4 p.m.).

Students will learn how to use music theory to create original melodies and compositions, improvisations, turn songs into electronic music using computer software, and much more. Tuition for the piano camp is $295 per student for either the morning or afternoon session, or $495 for the entire day. A minimum of two years of previous piano lessons is high recommended.

Concordia will also offer Ultimate Frisbee Camp for youth ages 9 to 17. The first session is slated for the week of June 24, and the second is for August 5.

Participants will learn technique, drills to improve their skill level, and enjoy competition. The camp will take place on Concordia’s football field, with the first session slated for the afternoon and second in the morning. The cost is $120 for the first camper and $100 for each additional family member.

Dominican University Dominican University will offer its Summer Gifted and Talented Program for highly-motivated, academically-gifted and talented students entering grades 2 through 8, and 9 through 12 in the fall. Courses are one-week long, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., and there are four weeks of course offerings in math, science, writing/humanities, and fine/ performing arts, plus a high school week dedicated for rising 9th to 12th-graders. The four sessions are scheduled for the weeks of June 17, June 24, July 9, and July 16.
