bout three years ago, Forest Park resident Terry Sullivan met Bobby Schiff for the first time, although she already knew the name.

Schiff, a Riverside resident, has been in the music industry for more than 30 years, a jazz pianist who has played for legendary vocalists like Mel Torme and Peggy Lee. Sullivan said she felt intimidated by Schiff ’s musicianship when she first met him, thinking they could never work together because “he’s too advanced.”

“I did have him high up here,” Sullivan said. “So I summoned my courage and called him -- I’m joking to some degree -- and said, ‘So could I come over and run some tunes?’”

And, sure enough, Schiff said yes. Even her mother was impressed.

Longing for old-school journalism

I

just filled a recycling container with all of the newspaper articles I’ve ever written. The collection goes back to 1988 and I was a bit sad that we no longer had space for it. I occasionally mined my boxes for ideas and articles, when I couldn’t come up with something new. I can still access these columns online and read hard copies at the Historical Society, but it was convenient to have them at my fingertips.

Newsprint has been in my blood since I was a kid delivering them on a bike. I’ve always been an avid reader and used to buy the Tribune and Sun-Times every day. But something has happened to newspaper junkies like me.

My neighbor used to love tackling fat Sunday newspapers and subscribing to the Review. Now, instead of paying money to turn pages, he scrolls the news for free. Who can blame him? The internet has been catastrophic for newspapers. They are facing sharp declines in advertising revenue and circulation, as more and more readers shift to online news.

I long for the days when print was king and I was reminded of that era by a recent

documentary on Jimmy Breslin and Pete Hamill titled, “Breslin and Hamill, Deadline Artists.” I wasn’t familiar with Hamill but I’ve been a Breslin fan since I was in third grade.

That’s the year I read Can’t Anybody Here Play This Game? in which he chronicled the failures of the 1962 Mets. It’s by far the funniest baseball book I’ve ever read. The documentary didn’t dwell on this book; it celebrated the columnists as media rock stars during their prime.

Big city newspaper columnists were once celebrities and shapers of public opinion. Subway cars were filled with commuters reading their columns.

We had our own newspaper icon in Mike Royko. He may have been based in Chicago but bore many similarities to Breslin and Hamill.

These giants of journalism didn’t attend college or journalism school. Writing columns was a craft they continually polished.

Breslin recalls young journalists asking him how he found stories.

All he had to do, he said, was walk the streets of New York.

That’s because Breslin interviewed working-class people and had little interest in elites. After JFK’s assassination, he

famously focused on Clifton Pollard, the Irish-American grave digger, who said it was an honor to dig the president’s grave at Arlington National Cemetery.

This kind of news-gathering was common before the internet age. I call it the Jackie Schulz School of Journalism. For over 40 years, Jackie roamed the streets of Forest Park with a canine companion. She literally stumbled on stories and brought the lives of many locals to light.

I was certainly a student of this method.

Back when I started, it was easy to find stories. My kids were young and involved in sports and other community activities.

All I had to do was write about the events I was already attending. When our kids grew up, though, we lost some of our connection to Forest Park.

I’m not ready to cover stories I find through the internet and social media. I’m still hoping to meet fascinating people to interview and discover new businesses, events and issues to write about. To paraphrase something I learned from the documentary, we still need journalists who come from the towns and neighborhoods they cover.

And if I ever need to interview a gravedigger, I couldn’t ask for a better town to find one.

Famed statue marked local racetrack A LOOK BACKonce IN TIME...

At Roosevelt Road and Hannah Avenue, marking the Harlem Race Racetrack was an unlikely place for the first African-American sculptor of international fame to have her work, “The Death of Cleopatra” showcased.

The 5.25-foot white marble statue was sculpted by Mary Edmonia Lewis for the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1876.

Edmonia Lewis, of AfricanHaitian-Ojibwe decent, was born about 1844. She studied at Oberlin College in 1859 and, under the urging of Fredrick Douglass, went to Rome to pursue her career. While in Rome, Lewis sculpted Cleopatra, a ruler of Egypt, who chose to die from the bite of an asp rather than submit to her enemies.

One of the few artists of African or Native American decent featured at the Centennial, her work was a sensation. Her sculpture was said to have challenged the Centennial’s national ideals of unity and liberty, by rep-

The masterpiece was unsold at the expedition and placed in storage. In 1878, it was brought to the Chicago Interstate Exposition. Somehow the sculpture made its way to a saloon on Clark Street and then was acquired by a gambler and owner of the Har-

lem Racetrack, “Blind John” Condon, who purchased it to mark the grave of a racehorse named “Cleopatra.”

It remained at Roosevelt and Hannah, even when the Racetrack became a ninehole golf course in the 1920s. When the golf course was expanded to 18 holes around 1935, the statue was moved to the practice field pond. This land later became part of the Naval Ordnance plant.

The statue was hauled off in the 1970s to a storage yard in Cicero, where it lay deteriorating when it was spotted by Harold Adams, local fire inspector. His local Boy Scout Troop painted the statue before Dr. Frank Orland, president of the Historical Society of Forest Park worked to return the sculpture to Forest Park in 1985.

Now back in Forest Park, it was safely cared for before moving one more time in 1994, where after $30,000 of restoration work, was placed for future generations to reflect upon, on the third floor of the Smithsonian Museum of American Art in Washington, D.C.

Construction bids a harbinger of spring Marengo-Elgin green alley paid partly by MWRD grant

In a sign that spring is just around the corner, the Forest Park Village Council, Feb. 11, authorized advertising for bids for two infrastructure projects.

One project will replace the alley in the 900 block between Marengo and Elgin avenues with a “green” alley. The other will entail replacing the water mains under the 400 and 500 blocks of Beloit Avenue and the 1500 block of Marengo Avenue and resurfacing those streets and the 600 block of Beloit and the 1400 block of Marengo.

A grant from the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD) will cover $123,830 of the estimated total cost of $280,000 for the green alley, with the remainder coming from the Village Improvement Program (VIP) fund. The VIP fund is a debt service fund committed to public infrastructure improvements.

The estimated cost of the water main/street resurfacing project is $1,214,000, paid for with $656,000 from the VIP Fund and $558,000 from the water fund.

Bids for both projects are due Feb. 27 with contracts expected to be awarded in March.

Village Administrator Tim Gillian said he is hopeful that both projects will start in the spring with the alley project expected to take 4-6 weeks and the water main/ street resurfacing project two to three months.

When the alley is replaced, the center 6 feet will consist of permeable pavers to help stop storm-water runoff; the rest will be concrete. In addition, the alley will have perforated catch basins to maximize storm water infiltration into the ground. Together the green infrastructure installations will provide a total design retention capacity of 28,841 gallons of storm water per rain event.

The green alley will be the third in the village, joining the 500 block alley between Thomas and Beloit avenues and the 100 block alley between Harlem and

Elgin Avenue.

Gillian indicated the cost of a green alley is $100,000 higher than the cost of a standard concrete alley, which is preventing the village from doing more.

Under an intergovernmental agreement between the village and the MWRD, Forest Park officials will provide and maintain signage describing the project as a joint effort between the village and the water reclamation district “to promote the use of green infrastructure as an effective means of storm water management.”

Mayor Anthony Calderone noted that Forest Park was the first municipality in Cook County to install a green alley in 2011 and the first to have all LED street lights, which was accomplished in 2012 and 2013.

“We’ve been practicing green technology for quite some time,” he said. “Wherever we can, we are trying to be environmentally friendly.”

Commissioner Tom Mannix noted that installing all LED street lights not only helped the environment but the village budget as well.

“It’s also saved taxpayers hundreds or thousands of dollars because of the reduced maintenance costs and electricity costs,” he said. “Not only was it good for a green and healthy environment but also good for greening the wallet.”

The green alley and water main/street resurfacing projects are part of an $8.5 million infrastructure plan for 2019 unveiled in December. Almost all of the funding for the plan, which includes two major projects, would come from tax increment financing (TIF) funds and grant money.

Heading the list are a $3.5 million multifaceted project in the Brown Street TIF District on the north end of the village and a $2.7 million sewer separation project at the south end. Of the $8,560,072 estimated total project costs, $5,159,795 will come from TIF funds; $2,030,107 from grant funds; $812,170 from the VIP fund; and $558,000 from the water fund.

Parks and schools combine to ‘Go the Distance’ 3K race scheduled for May 4

The Park District of Forest Park and School District 91 are joining forces to hold a three-kilometer run on the south end of the village on Saturday May 4.

The Forest Park Village Council cleared the way for the run at the Feb. 11 meeting, agreeing to close streets that morning to accommodate participants.

The run, called the Inaugural Go the Distance 3K, is geared toward grade school students, according to Jackie Iovanelli, park district executive director.

She said organizers wanted to give grade school students “a challenge they can accomplish,” noting that one mile is too short and five kilometers is too long. She also said there are no other three kilometer runs in the Chicago area.

Iovanelli said the event is still in the planning stages but organizers are hoping to start publicizing it once the village council approved the street closings. She said further information will be available in the park district brochure. Sponsorship opportunities will be available through the school district, she added.

Streets will be closed between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. The run itself is scheduled to start at 9 a.m.

The run will start and finish at The Park at Hannah Avenue and Harrison Street. The course, certified at 3 kilometers by USA Track and Field Inc., will go south from the park on Hannah to Fillmore Street, west to Beloit Avenue, north to Lexington Street, south to Harvard Street, west to Troost Avenue, north to Park Street, east to Dunlop Avenue, north to York Street, east to Lathrop Avenue, north to Harrison and east to the park.

In response to Commissioner Dan Novak’s concerns, Village Administrator Tim Gillian said residents “in the footprint” of the run course will be notified by race organizers.

D209 to vote on grad ceremony, bond transfer Board was scheduled to approve contract with UIC, transfer $16.7M to Capital Fund at Feb. 12 meeting

The Proviso Township High School District 209 school board was expected to make a decision about the location of graduation ceremonies for the 2019 and 2020 school years during its regular meeting on Feb. 12.

The board had not met by the time this article went to press on Tuesday afternoon, but District 209 Supt. Jesse Rodriguez recommended that the board approve a two-year contract with the University of Illinois at Chicago to hold the have the district’s graduation ceremonies on Sunday, May 19, 2019 and Sunday, May 24, 2020 at the UIC Pavilion.

The district has held its graduation ceremonies at the facility every year since 2007, except for 2014, when the ceremonies were held at the Rosemont Theatre.

The rental will remain the same — $32,000 per day, Rodriguez said. Parking is $10 for attendees.

The board decided on using the UIC Pavilion back in September after reviewing a variety of alternatives. Some community members had hoped that the ceremonies

would be held somewhere locally, perhaps even at District 209 campuses, but school officials determined that capacity limitations, cost factors and distance made holding graduation on the district’s campuses or at other facilities, such as Donald Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, less feasible options than holding it at UIC.

$16.7M bond transfer to capital fund The District 209 school board was also expected to transfer $16.7 million from its education fund to its capital projects fund during the regular meeting on Feb. 12.

The transfer of cash is part of a multilayered financial plan that District 209 officials devised in order to fund construction projects related to the Facility Master Plan that the board approved in January.

Once the $16.7 million transfer, there will be $62 million available for the first phase of the renovations at District 209 campuses — around $15 million shy of the $77 million district officials say is necessary to pay for the first round of master plan improvements.

Forest Park waste hauler offers compost option Eight-month trial will run from April through November

Forest Park residents concerned about the environment will soon have another recycling option.

Thanks in part to the efforts of several residents, village officials have instituted a separate pickup for compostable material with the village’s trash hauler, Republic Services.

The possibility of such a program was first raised in summer of 2018 when residents Sharon Bloyd-Peshkin and Etta Worthington met with Tim Gillian, village administrator, and John Doss, public works director.

Bloyd-Peshkin, who recently moved to Forest Park from Oak Park, said she wondered why Forest Park did not have a compostable material pickup program, similar to the one

she used when she lived in Oak Park.

Gillian explained that the village’s fiveyear contract with Republic was expiring and village officials were working on setting up a request for proposals around the time he and Doss met with Bloyd-Peshkin and Worthington.

“We had been working on it for a while but Republic did not offer the service,” Gillian said. “Certainly the outreach from Sharon helped me understand the need and the desire of our residents.

“In the end we elected to extend the current contract for one year and take advantage of good pricing. I made the composting program part of those discussions and a pre-requisite.”

Gillian and Bloyd-Peshkin gave credit for starting the program to each other.

“To his credit, he took our request seriously and got this to happen,” Bloyd-Peshkin said of Gillian.

Gillian returned the compliment.

“Certainly without the input from Sharon and Etta I would not have known the number of residents that would be interested in this program,” he said. “They also sent helpful reminders of their willingness to help.”

Bloyd-Peshkin and Worthington are both involved with Go Green Forest Park, although Bloyd-Peshkin said she does not hold a leadership position with the group and is involved in other organizations in the village.

She said used social media to reach out to fellow residents and gauge interest, using a simple online form she admits was “very unscientific.” In addition to sparking what Bloyd-Peshkin termed “lively conversa-

tions” on social media, she said her inquiry led to 76 people expressing interest in participating in such a program, information she shared with Gillian.

Noting the responses came in a week’s period, she said, “That says there’s a lot of interest.”

Bloyd-Peshkin said the program benefits residents without placing a financial burden on the village, calling it “revenue-neutral.”

Although many residents are able to compost materials in their backyards, she said many others, such as those living in apartments, are not. She also noted that neighbors have the option of sharing a container, which would reduce the cost.

Compost works because millions of tiny microbes consume the waste and transform the material into compost, which can be used as an organic fertilizer.

The program, which was announced in January after several months of negotiations between the village and Republic, will run from April 1 through Nov. 30.

The cost for the program, which BloydPeshkin is similar to ones in Oak Park and River Forest, will be $13 per month or $104 total, payable in advance. Gillian said he would insure that those joining the program after April 1 would receive pro-rated pricing.

Each household participating in the program will receive a 65-gallon container in which compostable material should be placed and which will be picked up weekly on the same schedule as their yard waste is picked up. tion with the yard waste recycling program, which explains the eight-month schedule.

According to Gillian, yard waste and food scraps are only picked up during spring, summer and fall because they do not decompose in the cold weather. He added he is checking to be sure of what other municipalities do, “but so far I am being told it is not uncommon for towns to offer this service only for specific months and not year round.”

Once the materials have been picked up, residents will not be able to access the compost. Gillian explained that most trash haulers dispose of food waste and yard waste at a private facility that is permitted by the state.

“As they are private facilities and not necessarily affiliated with the hauler, they do not allow residents to pick up the material,” he said.

In addition to helping the environment by keeping organic waste out of landfills, village officials noted that residents who participate in the program realize savings from no longer having to purchase yard waste bags for their lawn clippings or leaves.

“The real rationale for doing this is to divert compostable materials from landfills,”

Yard waste permitted in the program includes grass clippings, garden vegetation, and leaves. Food items permitted include fruit and vegetables, boneless meat, bread and crackers, pasta, dairy products such as cheese and yogurt, coffee grounds and eggshells. All organic waste must be clean and free of debris.

Prohibited items include beverages and other liquids, bones, plastic packaging, bags, Styrofoam, rubber bands, labels and serving ware such as plates, cups and flatware. Also prohibited are paper products, including soiled paper and wrap from food packaging, pet waste and diapers.

During the winter months, residents will be asked to keep the organics cart until the yard-waste season starts again the following April. Those who request that the container be picked up or cleaned out will incur a cart changeout fee for each pick-up and delivery.

Vehicle left running, stolen from lot A Chicago woman called police on Feb. 10 at 6:50 p.m. to report that her vehicle had been stolen from the rear parking lot of a Desplaines Avenue business.

The victim told police she parked behind Garmint Cleaners, 208 Desplaines Ave., and left her 2016 Nissan Pathfinder running as she loaded gifts from a baby shower into her vehicle.

While she was away from the vehicle, someone got into it and drove off northbound on Desplaines Avenue. The victim said she did

not see the offender and told police that she had the key fob and that the vehicle would not start again once it’s turned off.

Inside the vehicle were several baby shower gifts, an iPhone and $1,200 in cash.

Copper downspout taken

Police responded to St. John Lutheran Church, 305 Circle Ave., on the morning of Feb. 5 after a church employee called to report that a copper downspout was missing.

was on Feb. 1, according to the police report.

The approximately 20-foot section of copper downspout was noticed missing on Feb. 4.

Vigilante justice

Forest Park police charged two women and one man with battery after they assaulted a 24-year-old Forest Park woman in the parking lot of her apartment building in the 300 block of Desplaines Avenue on Feb. 10 about 12:40 p.m.

According to the police report, the alleged attack took place in front of a police officer who was called to the scene by the victim, who was locked in her car to keep out five people who were threatening her.

When the police officer arrived, the victim reported exited her vehicle. At that time, the two female offenders, a 25-year-old Chicago woman and a 24-year-old Maywood woman, started punching and kicking her.

The police officer got out of his vehicle and separated the parties, but the male offender, a 27-year-old Chicago man, allegedly kicked the downed victim in the face.

Police arrested the three offenders and learned that the incident was related to a stolen or missing iPhone that had been tracked to the Forest Park location. The previous day, according to the report, someone had battered a member of the offenders’ family in Cicero.

Paramedics transported the victim to the hospital for treatment.

Rental car goes AWOL

Police were called to Enterprise Rent-ACar, 7600 Roosevelt Road, on Feb. 6 after an employee called to report that a 25-year-old Burbank man had rented a silver 2017 Nissan Altima on Jan. 18 and was supposed to return it the next day.

However, the car was never returned and numerous attempts to contact the person who rented it have been unsuccessful. The company moved to declare the vehicle stolen after getting no response from a Jan. 30 certified letter demanding the vehicle’s return.

Package stolen

Police responded to the 7700 block of Harvard Street last week after a resident called to report that someone had stolen a package from his home.

The victim said he received an alert from the U.S. Postal Service on Feb. 7 that the package, containing a shirt valued at $70, had been delivered. When he arrived home from work, the package was missing. The following day, the victim confirmed that the package had been delivered at 2:53 on Feb. 7.

These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Forest Park Police Department, Feb. 4-10, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime.

These cases have not been adjudicated.

D91 has also partnered with the Park District of Forest Park and the Forest Park Public Library to drive the initiative. Residents are encouraged to snap a picture of any kindness logo they receive this week and post it on social media with the hashtag #District91Cares, as a way to spread the doctrine of kindness into the virtual world.

“A simple smile, opening a door for somebody, giving compliments, helping out those in need, helping a neighbor,” said teacher Amy O’Connell, who spearheaded the initiative. “All those little acts they make a big difference in the course of a day.”

In November 2018, O’Connell, a first-grade teacher at Betsy Ross Elementary School, discovered Project Kindness after seeing a Western Springs teacher’s post on Instagram, illustrating that businesses in the suburb distributed cheerful student-made logos to spread positive vibes.

“This needs to be implemented at D91,” she thought.

“What a great way for students to demonstrate the practices we do every day in our classrooms through our community.”

O’Connell pitched the idea of Project Kindness to Scott Dunnell, D91’s communications manager, and Bill Milnamow, principal of Betsy Ross. The two immediately warmed to the idea.

“My mother’s very cynical, nothing impresses her, and she was so impressed.”

Sullivan and Schiff have been rehearsing together weekly ever since, and now they’re preparing for their biannual performance as the Terry Sullivan Trio at 3 p.m. on Feb. 17 at Saints Peter and Paul Lutheran Church, 250 Woodside Rd. in Riverside.

Accompanying Sullivan’s vocals will be Schiff on piano and Stewart Miller on bass.

“My favorite bass player in town,” Schiff said.

Tickets are $25 per person, and $20 for seniors and students at the door.

Performers estimate the show will last about one-and-a-half hours, although that really depends on the crowd.

“The millennial generation, they don’t have contact with live music,” Schiff said.

“They stream everything. The art of conversation is being lost, and they don’t have a connection with people performing live.

To do something and have it that intimate is really special.”

“It’s kind of the cornerstone of what we do here at Betsy Ross School. We create an environment where kids are appreciated for who they are, accepted for who they are, acknowledged for who they are. We also want them to feel worthwhile, and cared about, and loved, and kindness just kind of overlaps with all of that.”

In January, O’Connell went on to present Project Kindness to D91 administrators and the board of education, who also embraced the initiative.

“It’s a wonderful idea,” Superintendent Louis Cavallo said

performing live shows at supper clubs and jazz clubs. Always a natural, Schiff started formally training as a pianist when he was 5 years old, taking the bus from Rogers Park to downtown Chicago. He would arrive early for his lessons so he could visit the Art Institute of Chicago, which was free at the time.

He was captivated by the French Impressionist paintings and credits them for “leaving an imprint on his psyche” and making him particularly fond of Gabriel Faure, Claude Debussy and other French composers.

“When I hear music by French composers of that era, I can match it to the works of art,” he said.

As Schiff grew, he went on to play at big venues in the city, where one night he bumped into jazz icon Ella Fitzgerald.

Fitzgerald had stopped by the concert and asked to sit in. Schiff, of course, obliged.

“That was fun,” he said, but random.

More memorable are his longer relationships with singers like Peggy Lee, who famously sang “Fever” and “Is That All There Is?” “She had a great book, which means the book that’s passed out to musicians,” Schiff said of Lee. “Her arrangements were wonderful. Later on, she hired me to do a tour with a smaller group of guys. We did a little bit in the states, and a little bit in Canada.”

In the 1970s, he started a commercial music business and created jingles for Sesame Street, McDonald’s, Hallmark and more.

During that time, Schiff moved out to Los

at the board of education meeting. “I’m really excited about this and it’s really taken on a life of its own.”

Four days later, two first-grade students, along with O’Connell, pitched Mayor Anthony Calderone on Project Kindness. Thinking “kindness never hurts,” Calderone went on to designate February 11-15 as “Kindness Week” in Forest Park, the first time a week in the village has been given an official theme.

“This takes a village and the village has really stepped up,” said Dunnell.

Learners across the district had spent about a week creating approximately 800 original logos to be given to residents, in addition to learning songs celebrating the mindset during music class.

“Every part of their day is encompassing this project, and it’s been really great,” O’Connell said. “But also having four different schools, it’s challenging on that part.”

In addition to “Kindness Week” being a first for the village, the initiative also represents a first for the district. It’s the first time the district has come together under a single project, O’Connell said.

She said she was initially nervous about the messages older children might spread --“What are they going to write?” she wondered -- but middle-schoolers treated the idea seriously, penning heartfelt messages to residents.

Students kicked off the week on Feb. 11 with speeches by Milnamow, Cavallo, Calderone and a musical showcase by students at Betsy Ross School.

“I would always consider Forest Park being a smaller town, but it’s so nice to see it all come together and for everyone involved -- the stores, the village, the students, the parents -- just all coming together to spread kindness, which is our end goal,” O’Connell said.

“I just picked a bad time to go out there,” he said. “I was just starting to make good headway when my union went on strike for like eight months. So I came back to Chicago and I never looked back.”

Schiff went on to perform with singers like Jack Jones and Barbara Eden, and spent 30 years as an accompanist to Frank D’Rone. He moved to Riverside about 24 years ago for a woman and never left.

In 2006, he released his first CD, “Late Game.” Then, about three years ago at a mutual friend’s house, he met Sullivan, and the two bonded over their shared love for live music and French composers.

“In jazz there’s kind of a lot of risk, therein lies the fun,” Sullivan said. “It’s not planned, a lot of it is improvised, and it’s in the moment, and you just look at each other and listen. So if you get to know the person musically, as we kind of now do, you take the risk without jumping off a cliff. You kind of have a clue where the other one might go.”

Sullivan grew up in small-town Ohio, singing in choirs, taking up the flute in fourth-grade and then going on to earn a degree in the subject. After college, she moved to Chicago to pursue singing.

“I had jazz in me and I was just too young and too shy to do that,” Sullivan said.

“When you’re the girl singer out front and everybody looks you over, I was just too young. I tried for a bit and the club owners were mean, and I didn’t know what I was

doing, so I went into small ensemble singing.”

Sullivan threw herself into small ensemble singing and traveled several times to England to hear their groups.

“Nobody does that like the English. The scales fell from my eyes,” she said.

She went on to pursue the craft for about 30 years, performing in the famous His Majestie’s Clarkes choir. But about 10 years ago, she tried her voice at jazz again.

“By this time I was a hardened person, toughened up enough to not care about standing in front,” Sullivan said. “I was just more comfortable in my own skin and not such a shrinking violet.”

She now compares her voice to that of the late singer Blossom Dearie, whose delicate, girlish voice was such a fixture in New York and Paris nightclubs.

This singing style works well with Schiff ’s sensibilities -- since her voice complements the subtle French harmonies he loves -- as well as with the small performance the two have planned.

“What we do in these concerts, it’s small and intimate, we do up-close, small stuff and that’s a good thing,” Sullivan said. “More and more I think people are a little bit separated and dehumanized by all these electronics.

“They’re listening on recordings, or they’re maybe going to concerts in big halls and big stadiums, and that’s great and all great, but this intimate stuff, that gives you energy.”

Kindness counts

M

an, can we use a little kindness right about now.

Forest Park is rising up, through its children, to recognize that simple kindness is what we need.

We are smack dab in the middle of the duly authorized Kindness Week in our village. You’ll hopefully pay attention to the 10,000 District 91 student-generated stickers turning up this week on your Counter Coffee cup, on that pair you buy at Madison Street Shoes. You’ll see someone wearing a “Be kind today” wristband. You’ll see a picture on Build Forest Park or Forest Park Town Hall capturing a kind act. And, if we really get cooking, you’ll experience firsthand an unexpected thank you, or other simple expression of neighborliness.

This is all the brainchild of Amy O’Connell, a D91 teacher.

She saw the idea on Instagram in November. She brought it to her principal and a district official and just last month took it to the school board. Then students took it to Mayor Anthony Calderone.

And now, voila, it is Kindness Week. That’s the sort of lovely momentum that can build in our small town. The parks and the library jumped on board, the Chamber of Commerce, too. This is just the kind of viral goodness we need to spread all across Forest Park.

We need destinations

We spend a fair amount of time staring at empty storefronts, worrying about potentially empty storefronts, pondering the fate of retail and considering if we have too many bars or an oversaturation of restaurants.

What’s the alternative? We’d suggest it is a whole range of alternatives with the common theme of being an actual destination. We need, and every town needs, places where you actually have to turn up in person. This week we carry a piece about one such place that is carving a new role on Madison Street. Urban Pioneer Group, 7503 Madison, sort of defies definition. And we think that is part of the concept.

This appealing space can morph through a single day, hosting everything from popular bakery pop-ups in the morning to a birthday party in the afternoon and then an evening fundraiser. Each one has the benefit of bringing divergent crowds to our main street.

The future of Madison Street is not going to look like the past. Fostering innovation, celebrating what’s different will be that future.

Minor repairs

Most of us would be scared stiff to turn an architect loose in our homes to tote up the deficiencies. To its credit, and because it is required, our District 91 public schools tasked its architects to look in every nook and cranny — think oven hoods and janitor’s closets — looking for things that need help. A month ago across all the district’s buildings, the firm came up with $300,000 in minor repairs that now need to be updated over five years.

This is a testament to the year-by-year investments in our schools that the district makes and that generous taxpayers fund.

The smartphone love affair is over

ometimes in life, you realize that you’re just done with something.

It’s over. Doesn’t matter how close you were, doesn’t matter what your friends say, doesn’t matter what the split will cost you. Once you break that bond, it’s over. I’ve had this experience a number of times in life now; sometimes with people, sometimes with ideas, sometimes with habits. I have broken up with television, with Facebook, with Twitter, with arguing about current events, and with beer. (This isn’t just a positive thing, of course — I have also abruptly broken up with jogging, with writing, with people, and with jobs.)

This time, it’s my smartphone.

I think we’re done.

We had fun at the start. What a magic device this was. The world in the palm of your hand! No fears of missing an important call! No torment from my own treacherous imagination over being unreachable. Texting with a “real” keyboard, instead of the letters on a phone pad! Pictures! Directions!

Magic!

Slowly, though, it’s stopped being a magic little thing that makes life better and started being a hideous little attention-vacuum that makes me miss everything. It’s painful to look around a restaurant and see ¾ of the room on phones. Landmarks are seen through phone screens. Events are filmed and shared with the absent, rather than experienced with those present. I can be reached (interrupted) by any person at any time, and by orders of magnitude do those intrusions outweigh the important moments for which I needed to be reachable. In fact, I can’t think of one call where I thought, “Thank god for this smartphone,” since I got the thing.

I don’t know if the Great Social Experiment is nearly over, but it could be.

I am a late adapter to new technology, but I make up for it by being an early dismisser: I tend to burn out on things slightly ahead of the curve. I wish I could imagine a world in which craning one’s neck over a personal screen in public was treated with the same contempt as farting or smoking in the same venue.

The AT&T people are not taking this well. They’re reacting to my request for a flip phone like Philip Morris reacted to the Surgeon General’s warning. I am aware this means that within a few years AT&T will be selling a “privacy phone” that costs $300 plus $100/month for the privilege of having what is functionally a flip-phone from 2004. For the moment, though, the training classes have not

prepared the sales people for a request to trade down. Way down. They don’t know what to do when I ask for a non-smart cellphone. It’s as though I walked into the hospital on a $100,000 prosthetic robot leg made of titanium and holograms and asked if I could trade it for a peg carved of whalebone. They’ve all but requested a psychiatric evaluation. They’re not that concerned, I believe; they just don’t know what else to do.

Maybe I’m overreacting. I just don’t think the thing has brought me that much. I have read a hundred thousand articles on the phone, but none I remember. My posture is worse.

I have trouble concentrating long enough to read books. I get frustrated with myself for how easy it is to get lost in it. I have sent uncountable texts, but only a dozen people matter that much to me. I can read my email, but I don’t get much that’s worth it. The instant gratification of the phone has come to seem less like the world at my fingertips and more like me at the beck and call of marketing. I can take quick pictures, but they’re mostly of my cats, and without social media, I don’t know why I take so many. I can peruse more options for routes or restaurants or entertainments, but I have in many cases replaced enjoying those things with worrying I missed something better.

So: We’re separating. 90 days. I’ll let you know if I feel better, or if I’m just getting into that “Everything was better in the old days!” demographic.

I wonder how many days the withdrawal lasts.

A real opportunity for Forest Park I went to a Forest Park Forward meet-andgreet and was very impressed. (Full disclosure, I am now a volunteer for the campaign.) I was impressed with the candidates’ commitment to putting together an economic plan, to repairing the divisiveness in the village, and to transparency in village government. It was evident that all four of the candidates had been doing their homework on local issues. They were each very easy to approach with questions and suggestions.

One of my main takeaways was that although they are running together (pooling resources), they are also all unique individuals. The candidates have a mix of progressive and conservative ideas, which I think is perfect for our village because we are also a mix of progressive and conservative citizens. I strongly believe they would represent us well.

It’s exciting to see so much energy in the village directed at making progress and moving forward. We have a great opportunity in this next election to come together and focus on our common goals: helping Forest Park grow and improve.

I think the four candidates from Forest Park Forward: Julianne Bonwit, Mark Boroughf, Jon Kubricht, and Jessica Voogd would do a great job for Forest Park. I highly

recommend attending a meet-and-greet, or one of the candidate forums coming up.
