After nearly two years, the Illinois State Board of Education finally released the 2016 scores for its inaugural science test, and the majority of Forest Park students did not meet state standards. Local Illinois Science Assessment scores also revealed a

gap between white and black, low income and non-low-income, and male and female students.

Lessons I’ve learned, sometimes the hard way

O

ne of the winter survival tips I came across was “Make a List of Lessons Learned.” Here are

mine: ■ Wearing a beret adds 10 points to your IQ. ■ Nothing sounds phonier than opera laughter.

■ The Cook County soda tax freed me from years of dependence on diet pop.

■ The merchants of Oak Park, charging a dime for a bag, ended my lifelong addiction to shopping bags.

■ “Two wrongs don’t make a right” was a sacred truth I learned growing up. I couldn’t defend my wrongdoing by pointing out another’s misdeeds. When did that go out the window?

■ Never borrow against your house. Never borrow money from family and friends. It’s OK to borrow a tool from a neighbor, as long as you return it — before they move.

■ It’s all right to put off today what you can do tomorrow, as long as it’s not a sink full of dishes.

■ Asking questions can be more fun than telling stories.

■ Is there a stupider timeout than the 2-minute warning?

■ Memorizing user names and passwords is the most maddening aspect of modern life.

■ Friends don’t let friends text drunk.

■ If you’re tired of being cold in Chicago, wear thermal underwear at least six months of the year.

■ If you want to change someone’s mind, start out by agreeing with them.

■ Don’t judge another person’s motives, unless they’ve committed a crime.

■ Do not use the silent treatment on anyone, unless they’re hitting you up for money to take the el.

■ Never read someone else’s email, even if you’re related by marriage.

D91 schools release new mobile app Download for free online at iTunes and Google Play stores

District 91 schools recently unveiled their inaugural mobile application, offering another way for parents to stay in the loop.

“The mobile app is linked to our website and provides our school community with the information most important to them,” Becca Latham, D91 communications manager, said in a statement. “Our new mobile app will allow parents to stay even more connected with notificanotifica tions straight to their phone and quick access to all the schools’ digital backpacks.”

Developers from Blackboard Learn spent about three months building the mobile app so it would automatically sync to the district’s website, which is also powered

by Blackboard Inc. The software company charges D91 an annual fee of $594 to run the app.

Volunteers appeal video gaming decision to circuit court County judge will hear and decide referendum case on Feb. 15

The battle over video gaming in Forest Park continued in Cook County Circuit Court on Feb. 1, as a judge outlined the next steps in deciding whether a binding referendum question will be included on an upcoming election ballot.

Associate Judge James Carroll highlighted the timeline for appealing the ruling of the village’s electoral board. On Jan. 23, the electoral board decided to disqualify more than 200 pages of a referendum petitions submitted by a group called Let Forest Park Vote on Video Gaming because six of those pages had a heading that differed from the rest.

James Watts, a Madison Street bar owner, had challenged the referendum petition. That challenge was heard by a three-person electoral board that included Forest Park Mayor Anthony Calderone, Clerk Vanessa Moritz and Commissioner Tom Mannix.

The local electoral board, against the advice of its attorney, decided to disqualify the entire petition instead of just the six pages that bore a different heading.

Village Attorney Tom Bastian said he thought throwing out only the six petition sheets with an incorrect referendum date of Nov. 8, 2016 would be the appropriate remedy.

The six sheets with the different heading contained less than 100 of the nearly 3,000 valid signatures on the petitions.

Carroll will hear and decide the case at 11:30 a.m. on Feb. 15 in Room 1707 of the Richard J. Daley Center, 50 W. Washington St. in Chicago.

“I think the law is on our side, and I think Judge Carroll will agree with us,” said attorney Ed Mullen, who represents Let Forest Park Vote.

If Carroll rules in favor of Let Forest Park Vote, the question “Shall video gaming be prohibited in the village of Forest Park?” will be included on the November 2018 election

ballot, according to the Cook County Clerk.

Let Forest Park Vote’s question is binding, which means that if a majority of Forest Parkers vote against the practice, video gaming — which is now allowed — will be outlawed in the village.

The pro-referendum group originally wanted its question on the March 20 primary ballot, but three advisory referendum questions had already been submitted for that ballot in November 2016. Only three questions are allowed on any ballot per state law.

Moritz certified the advisory questions for the March ballot on Jan. 10.

Mullen must submit a brief to the court by Feb. 6. Attorney James Nally, who represents Watts, must submit a reply to Let Forest Park Vote’s brief by Feb. 9.

James Carroll, the Cook County Circuit Court judge assigned to hear the Forest Park referendum appeal, once worked at Chicago-based Quinlan & Carroll Ltd., a boutique litigation firm that formerly represented a Forest Park village commissioner who got into a bar fight, according to the judge.

Carroll said he was fuzzy on the facts, but he believed the case occurred about 15 years ago. He did not name the commissioner his firm represented and said he had only minor involvement in the investigation.

“It was one of the board trustees; he got into a bar fight, and the police were called in and he was arrested, and we were hired to do an investigation. But I participated to a minor extent,” Carroll said to those gathered in court on Feb. 1. “In fact, I remember meeting the mayor, Mr. [Anthony] Calderone, on one occasion, possibly two, but for whatever reason we never finished the investigation.”

Carroll did not mention why his firm never finished a report. But because the village of Forest Park was a client of his former firm, Carroll offered to recuse himself from the appeal.

Let Forest Park Vote on Video Gaming, a political action committee represented by attorney Ed Mullen, and attorney James Nally, who represents those challenging the referendum petitions, agreed that Carroll’s recusal was not necessary.

7th District candidates face off for first time Rep. Davis and Clark offer contrasting pitches – experience vs. change

Congressman Danny K. Davis and Anthony Clark, his challenger in the 7th District Democratic Primary, faced each other during a formal campaign event for the first time on Feb. 3. The short exchange was a study in contrasts, as Davis presented himself as the experienced statesman while Clark presented himself as the face of change.

During the opening salvos of the roughly 15-minute exchange, which was sponsored by the Proviso Township Democratic Organization and hosted in Melrose Park, Clark echoed a critique of Davis that he first lodged earlier that week after Davis announced he was boycotting President Donald Trump’s first State of the Union address on Jan. 30.

“The issues we face are systemic,” said Clark, 35, who explained last week that he would have attended the address as a show of strength. “So many people are anti-Trump,

but if you’re not anti-system that has led to Trump, you’re not doing anything. We have to change things systemically.”

Davis, who has served in Congress since 1997, touted his experience in office while pointing out the Republican Party’s stronghold at the federal level.

“Our country is facing one of the most difficult and challenging periods that any of us have ever known,” Davis said.

“We’ve never experienced a time where one political party had control of the entire apparatus of federal government,” he added.

“In order to challenge and block some of the draconian notions and ideas they have, you really need people who are serious and who understand the process.”

Clark, a first-time candidate who teaches at Oak Park and River Forest High School and is founder of the nonprofit Suburban Unity Alliance, said that, if elected, he would extend the grassroots nature of his campaign to his governing style.

“It’s extremely important to send the

message to constituents about the importance of empowering ourselves,” Clark said.

“It’s going to take 100 percent grassroots effort and boots on the ground to build bridges that haven’t existed throughout the 7th District between communities,” he added. “We need to do for ourselves. Nothing changes systemically on a national level until it changes on a local level.”

Davis, after pointing out the pieces of legislation that he introduced, said he is more equipped to work with a GOPdominated Congress to pass policies that might benefit his constituents.

“If you read [the Almanac of American Politics], it says I’m able to convince colleagues across the aisle because of my consistent efforts to deal with the needs of the poor,” Davis said.

Clark, after thanking Davis for his service, said, “What we’ve learned today is that [Davis] would do the same thing. Isn’t the same thing what got us to this point?” School closures and gun violence in the district,

he added, have “continued to increase and current political leaders [are still trying] to address symptoms instead of treating root causes. I’m not the same thing.”

Davis, who spoke last, shot back, “Marcus Garvey says that any group that does not know anything about its history is like a tree with no roots.

“I ain’t had nothing to do with people being impoverished except try to change it,” Davis said. “I ain’t had nothing to do with what 300 years of slavery and disadvantages have done, so to talk about Danny Davis as part of these problems is kind of ludicrous.

It’s also an indication that one obviously does not know much about their history.”

Armed man barred from bar

Police responded to a call about a possible drug dealer hanging outside Pioneer Tap about 2 a.m. on Jan. 29.

When they arrived at 7445 Randolph, they found a Bellwood man attempting to force his way into the front door of the bar, which was closed for the night. The Pioneer Tap manager and another employee were inside trying to keep the man from entering.

When officers pulled the man away from the door, he seemed unbalanced and smelled of alcohol and cannabis. They also felt a possible weapon. Police pulled up the offender’s sweatshirt and found a black handgun in a holster. The man kept turning away from police, attempting to keep them from searching his left side hip and pocket. He was speaking incoherently, and told police he needed to get his credit card and ID from Pioneer Tap. Officers transported him to the police department. At the station, police recovered a very small, burnt cigarette that smelled like marijuana in his pocket.

The Pioneer Tap manager said she had been trying to close the bar when the man attempted to enter. She said she knows the man because he comes to Pioneer Tap regularly and works at the barbershop next door.

She said they didn’t have his credit card or ID because he was drinking in the bar earlier and took his items.

When asked about how much he drank, the man responded, “I drank the whole bar.”

He was charged with carrying a concealed firearm under the influence.

Forest police were conducting a covert surveillance of a home when they reportedly spotted a man selling heroin outside on Jan. 31.

Officers arrived about 10 a.m. at 400 Maple Ave. regarding a burglary investigation, according to a police report. An hour later, officers watched a black Audi SUV park directly in front of 420 Maple Ave. Ten minutes later, a white Buick pulled up.

Police recognized the occupants of the white Buick for twice selling narcotics to other motorists the day before. They watched the driver of the Audi hand the passenger of the Buick a stack of money.

The Buick passenger then handed the Audi driver a stack of white-colored packets.

Meanwhile, officers pulled up to the parked Audi on Maple. Police approached the passenger side of the Audi, and ordered the man to step outside. The man stepped out and told police he had several packets inside a cigarette pack that was tucked into his coat. The driver also handed police three zip-lock baggies containing suspected heroin.

The Buick drove northbound on Maple Avenue, and later stopped at the intersection of Washington Boulevard and Home Avenue.

Officers approached and placed the driver

and front passenger in custody. A search of the driver indicated a large amount money in his pants and jacket pocket. A search of the passenger turned up $962 and two small bags of cannabis.

Offenders steal backpack from car At some point between 8 p.m., Jan. 30 and 6:45 a.m., Jan. 31, someone broke into a Subaru Forester parked at 7410 Dixon and stole a canvas shoulder bag, according to a police report. The bag was later recovered at 148 Circle Ave. on Jan. 31, although the victim said his headphones were missing.

Access to the vehicle may have been gained through an unlocked door.

TVs and bed covers stolen in burglary Police responded to calls of a resident burglary about 11:58 p.m. at 8290 Roosevelt Road on Jan. 31, according to a police report.

A woman said she had left her son’s apartment to take a friend home, when she saw someone walking toward the apartment building. When she returned to her son’s apartment, she found that the front door had been kicked in and bed covers, three pillows, and two TVs had been taken. She estimated the cost to replace the items is about $250.

Tires, rims taken from stolen truck Between 9:37 p.m., Jan. 31 and 8:15 a.m., Feb. 1, someone stole a semi-truck parked at Weinstein Wholesale Meats, according to a police report. The truck was equipped with a tracking device and later located at 12233 S. Avenue O in Chicago. A representative from Weinstein Meats drove to the location and found the missing truck on blocks, with its rims and tires missing. A surveillance video captured the truck leaving 7501 Industrial Dr. about 9:37 p.m., Jan. 31.

These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Forest Park Police Department, Jan. 29-Feb.5, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded.

Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

For the fourth year in a row, the Lady Pirates, coached by Ezra PridGeon, have secured the West Suburban Conference Gold title, and once again are undefeated in the Conference and 24-2 overall. The depth of talent on this team makes them a dominant force on the court.

“Once an escaped patient from Madden broke our storm door,” she said.

When the cemetery closed for the day, at 5 p.m., Jagow’s father would drive through Concordia to make sure no stragglers were locked in. If he later spotted lights among the headstones, he would immediately call Forest Park police.

Apart from these unwelcome visitors, it was an idyllic place to grow up.

“There was no fence around the house and I could play outside without supervision,” Jagow said.

However, she had to be wary of traffic, because Concordia was a busy place back then. In its heyday, the cemetery wasn’t just dealing with vehicular traffic.

“The Madison Street streetcar had a stop at Concordia,” Jagow said. “The Chicago, Aurora & Elgin Railroad ran through the cemetery and had a special funeral car.”

The funeral car was discontinued but the commuter railroad continued to connect passengers to CTA trains, until it abruptly shut down on July 3, 1957. Its former right-ofway is now part of the Illinois Prairie Path.

In 1953, an even wider path was cut through Concordia to make way for the Eisenhower Expressway. The project took 8.8 acres from the cemetery and required the removal of 1,400 graves.

“We hired extra help for the grave removal,” Jagow said. “We had to notify all the plot owners. We found relatives for all but 12. The monuments had to be moved. It was all done in orderly fashion.”

Most of the deceased were re-buried in Concordia.

“It was a big deal,” Jagow said. “It was the most graves moved in the history of the US.”

The other “big deal” at the cemetery was when Jagow’s father renovated the large greenhouse.

“We sold decorative plants and fresh flowers for the graves,” she said. “The majority of the customers were women, so my father cleaned it up and stocked it with gardening supplies. He hired a female cashier and greatly expanded the business.”

Jagow’s father tended to hire workers from St. John’s Church, including dozens of high school and college students during the summer. One of the summer hires was Gary Neubieser.

“He was always at the house. He was like a brother to me,” Jagow said.

Neubieser was such a part of the family that the Jagow drove to Fort Leonard Wood, in Missouri, to visit Gary when he was stationed there. After college, Neubieser took a permanent job at Concordia Cemetery.

Years after her father retired, Neubieser took over as general manager. He revived the cemetery’s tradition of celebrating Memorial Day. “We used to have big crowds on Memorial Day,” Jagow recalled, “There would be a 21gun salute and they placed flags on the military graves.”

The cemetery wasn’t just busy on holidays. On some days there were two or three funerals, and for each procession, the cemetery’s famous Deagan Tower played chimes.

“My friends would have a moment of silence,” Jagow said. “I took them on tours of the cemetery. My friends got a kick out of visiting.”

That’s because Jagow’s family offered amusements, besides strolling through 82,000 graves. Although Jagow didn’t con-

sider the cemetery to be a “spooky” place, it was the ideal spot for a Halloween party.

They literally played “Ghost in the Graveyard,” scaring the younger kids.

There was a sledding hill they enjoyed in the winter and a toboggan they would hitch to the back of the Jeep. Jagow’s father made it clear, though, that Concordia wasn’t for recreation.

“Concordia Cemetery was for honoring the dead.” Jagow said. “I was not allowed to ride my bike through the cemetery.”

When she wasn’t exploring the acreage, Jagow was attending classes at St. John Lutheran School and then at Walther Lutheran High school and secretarial school.

She then spent 42 years working in the insurance business, retiring as a broker from Aon Insurance.

As for Neubieser, he’s still at Concordia.

He was 14 years old when he started working at the cemetery, and he credited the Jagows with teaching him mechanics and how to repair equipment.

He had to leave his job, temporarily, in 1967, when he was drafted and sent to Vietnam. When he returned from the service, Herman Jagow gave him his old job back.

When he became manager, Neubieser tore down the greenhouses, because it was cheaper to buy flowers than grow them. He has now been working at the cemetery for 58 years.

“I’ve enjoyed all of my years working here,” he said, “I’ve made unhappy customers into friends.”

At the age of 72, Neubieser is considering retirement. When he leaves, it will be someone else’s turn to live in Forest Park’s special place.

East wins in Proviso showdown The Proviso East vs Proviso West Basketball Showdown was hosted at Proviso West High School in Hillside this weekend. Senior, Ronnie Allgood was unstoppable in the paint and lead the Panthers in scoring with 25 points.

However, it was not enough to upend the Pirates (11-4), (5-1) who powered past West in a 61-72 victory.

At the end of the first quarter, the Panthers Deveon Bryant had already put in 6 points but East narrowly held onto a the lead 16-15. In the second quarter the Pirates slowly began to pull away and lead at the half 32-26. In the 3rd quarter though, Donnie Boyce’s trademark defensive pressure started to wear down the Panthers as sophomore Michael Osborne made his third three-pointer of the game. Building on the lead, the Pirates closed the 3rd quarter up 54-38.

The crowd went wild after consecutive dunks from leading scorer Jordan Morris (16 points) and Quinlan Bennett (14 points) causing Panther Coach, Anthony Longstreet to call a time out to compose the team.

The Pirates face off at home in the Proviso East Field House against the Addison Trail Blazers on Saturday February 10th at 6pm.

Willson — who was born in Melrose Park, grew up in Maywood and graduated a two-time state wrestling champion from Proviso East High School in 1946 — died on Dec. 30 from kidney failure, according to a Chicago Tribune

He was born Sept. 6, 1946 in Oak Park.

He leaves his loving wife, Mary (nee, Colston); devoted sons, L.J. Huebner and Adam Ritter; his grandson, David; beloved brother of Ken Huebner (Randy); one daughter-in-law, Heather Huebner; sisters-in-law, Betty and Sandy Huebner and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son, Dave Huebner and two brothers, Don and Tom Huebner.

He was a proud veteran of the US Air Force, who served in Thailand during the Vietnam Era. Larry was a resident of Genoa, Forest Park and Round Lake, IL. His career

Larry Piekarz to retire as park district director in October Has served Forest Park for nearly three decades

A lifeguard at the pool once asked Larry Piekarz to come down from his office as director of the Park District of Forest Park and deal with a difficult woman. When he arrived, the woman complained that kids with mental disabilities were acting in ways that frightened her child.

When she told Piekarz to ask those young people to leave, he replied, “Ma’am I can’t do that. But I can ask you to leave.”

That’s just one example of how Piekarz has spent his career fighting to include members of the whole community, and represents what Forest Park stands to lose when he retires in October. On February 7, 1989 Piekarz stepped into the role as director of the Park District of Forest Park.

He graduated from Southern Illinois University with a degree in therapeutic recreations and spent several one-year stints at park districts around Chicago before coming to work at Forest Park in 1989, as the superintendent of recreation. Fifteen years later, he became the assistant director, and when Dave Novak left the post in 2006, the park Board named him director.

Now, 29 years later, Piekarz is retiring.

The Board has not yet named his successor, although Piekarz said about 10 people have approached him about the job. They hope to have a new director in place sometime this summer so that Piekarz can help with the transition.

And then?

“When I leave, no one will notice that I’m not there anymore,” Piekarz joked.

In a way, that’s true. Piekarz’s style of leadership is to empower staff members to make their own decisions and hold themselves accountable. He never has been a micromanager. Piekarz’s enabling direction has energized his staff to expand the number of programs offered by the Park District from six in 1989 to the more than 40 programs and events today.

From the beginning, Piekarz has emphasized a team approach to getting things done.

He isn’t being modest when he says the whole village should take credit for projects like the new Roos Recreation Center, the All School Picnic and No Gloves Nationals tournament.

“Everything we try doesn’t go well, but we’re open to trying anything,” Piekarz said.

Like restarting and reimaging annual fireworks display, which the Park District cancelled in 2013 over concerns about the increased size of the crowd, cost and security.

After a four year hiatus, Piekarz decided to bring it back. The Fourth of July spectacular was held again at the park with the whole village helping to make the event work. Park staff made the event smaller and cooperated with the village to decrease the amount of marketing done on social media. Police chief Thomas Aftanas put in place a revised plan for security. Issues regarding funding the $20,000 event were addressed by local businesses and residents.

“I love that we got the fireworks back,” Piekarz said. “Because, to me, that was a day

Under the leadership of Piekarz, the No Gloves Nationals also evolved from a simple softball tournament to a community event where both local and out-of-town attendees can enjoy food and drinks, swim at the pool and maybe even watch some softball. The 16” Hall of Fame Museum also opened on Piekarz’s watch in July 2014. Piekarz said 100 volunteers from the village make the event happen each year.

Piekarz has used that same collaborative leadership style to make the Roos project a reality. He connected with politicians in Springfield and Chicago to get hundreds of thousands of dollars in grant money. He worked with the village to secure water for the updated facility.

After 29 years of working with almost everyone whose knocked on his office door, what does Piekarz plan to do when his 29year stretch ends October 5?

“Travel some, spend time with the grandkids, get a part-time job and bother my wife a lot,” he said.

Construction crews are still installing and overhauling the Park District of Forest Park’s Roos Recreation Center, a new 15,000-squarefoot community space, set to open May 26.

Workers recently added cabinets, sinks and counter space to the 1,000-square-foot multipurpose room, along with such audio visual features as a projector. Residents will be able to rent out the room for company events, birthday parties and more.

ment, free weights, locker rooms, showers and ActivTrax computerized personal training programs. Memberships for the fitness room are currently being sold at the

Flooring for the gymnasium should be arriving next week and will be installed by the end of the month. The gym measures about 8,226 square feet.

Construction is set to be done in mid-April, giving park district employees time to decorate and deep clean before the center’s grand opening in May.

“This happens all the time, day in and day out. Serving families is what we do,” said Karen Dylewski, director of the community center. “But this was a baby that hasn’t eaten, a newborn baby that mom couldn’t feed. That put us over the edge.”

Dylewski saw the baby wasn’t getting milk, and couldn’t sleep that night. She posted a call to action on Facebook, asking, “Anyone who has baby items, food, formula, clothes, please let me know. Really need your help with this one.

They are beautiful people.”

Her request went viral. Screenshots of the post ended up in at least four Forest Park, Proviso Township and other area Facebook groups, with hundreds of people liking, commenting and sharing the posts.

The next day, Dylewski said she received calls from about 20 people from all walks of life — lawyers, doctors, Arabic translators — all asking how they could help the Egyptian couple.

Dylewski said the support is overwhelming, but in a good way.

“I need to somebody to manage my Facebook page,” she joked, later adding, “I know they’re going to be OK. They’ll be back on their feet in a few months, and hopefully mom will get past her medical issues, dad can go to work and they’ll have a good feeling about America.”

The Egyptian couple, who Dylewski declined to name out of a concern for privacy, were on rocky footing in Forest Park. Dylewski believes the man has been in the U.S. about four years. His wife joined him about a year ago. About two

weeks ago, they had their first baby.

Neither the husband nor the wife speak English comfortably, and neither has family in the U.S. The cultural gap has presented challenges to them as they’ve tried to navigate American social service agencies.

During the woman’s pregnancy, she reportedly contracted a “grave, very dangerous, serious situation” that’s left her with blood clots, Dylewski said.

“She’s got to see a doctor three to four times per week, and receive injections two or three times a day,” Dylewski said.

“That’s why he’s got to be at home. He’s got to be at home to take care of the baby while mom takes care of herself.”

After a few tries, the woman was able to get herself signed up for CountyCare, Cook County’s health insurance program for low-income people. The husband works as a limo driver about two days a week. The two own a condo in Forest Park, but are a few months behind on their mortgage. After a few days of skipping meals, the mom stopped producing milk, starving the 10-day old baby girl.

“He’s a very, very nice, proud, humble man. He just wants to take care of his care of his family,” Dylewski said.

Dylewski runs a food pantry at the community center, so she was able to feed them right away. She also handed them gift cards for groceries, gas and more. She told them to come

back the next day, and every day after.

Because the community center is also a Salvation Army drop-off point, Dylewski and officials are working to collect donations to pay for the family’s January and February mortgage bills and help them stockpile funds so the new family can get settled.

Dylewski said she received a generous $200 donation from the Kiwanis and another $20 from a woman “with a toddler who said she saw my post and couldn’t sleep.”

Community center staff have also filled out and expedited applications to get the child signed up for health care, food stamps and the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) food nutrition service. Those who want to donate can drop off items at the community center at 7640 Jackson Blvd.

“It’s really hard for people that are not used to the system; they don’t even know where to begin,” Dylewski said. “You have to go and sit and wait in lines and tell your story all over again, and it’s even harder when you don’t speak the language so freely.”

The outpouring of support has inspired the family to warm to community center staff, telling Dylewski they’re family now.

To that, Dylewski replied: “When you’re all set back, working and everything is good, you pay it forward.”

Salt of the earth

L

arry Piekarz is our kind of leader. Positive, inclusive, generous, low-key.

Now the inevitable news that Piekarz, the park district’s director since 2006 and a staffer since 1989, will be retiring this fall. That will be after the crowning achievement of his career — he would correct us and say, “Forest Park’s achievement” — that being the opening of the Roos Recreation Center.

This new facility, moving toward its opening in the late spring, has been a journey. It’s like it didn’t want to get built. It was Piekarz’s steady, relentless effort — he’d correct us and salute the park board, the park staff, the architects, generous taxpayers, the village, financial consultants, legislators — that made this real. In the process, the park district expanded its footprint at its primary facility by one-quarter; took out a derelict, though notable, old building; and added great recreation options, including a gym, track, fitness facility and meeting rooms.

Piekarz isn’t wrong in always finding other people to credit. The Roos project would not have happened without all of the people listed above. But it was Piekarz’s quiet, determined outreach that orchestrated the necessary collaboration among all those people and entities.

In a small town where our civic life is too often divisive, Larry Piekarz is the epitome of a community builder.

A good word for everybody. Credit all around. He takes joy in the successes his crew achieves. He talks candidly about things that go haywire. “Everything we try doesn’t go well, but we’re open to trying anything,” Piekarz says in today’s article by Tom Holmes.

The park district board will have a challenging job in choosing a successor to Larry Piekarz. You’re not going to replicate this man. But maintaining the positive, salt-ofthe-earth tenor he created is a worthy goal.

Help on the way

A young family in real trouble found their way into the Howard Mohr Community Center last week. A mom, dad and 10-day-old baby girl. According to Karen Dylewski, director of the community center, the mom has health problems owing to complications from the recent birth.

The baby is hungry because the mom can’t breastfeed.

The dad has cut way back on his work hours to provide care to the mom and baby.

Dylewski reported that the family is Egyptian, the dad and daughter American citizens, the mom in the States on a Green Card. Residents of Forest Park, they’ve fallen behind on their condo payments as their woes have escalated.

And that’s when the Forest Park magic began. What do they need? I’ve got formula. She’s got diapers, are cloth OK? Is there a GoFundMe page? Baby clothes? Is the baby a boy or girl? Where do we drop things off ?

Help has arrived. We’d credit this young family for knowing they should reach out for help. We’d thank all the locals who have jumped in to provide help. We’ll even give a nod to social media which can be a great unifier when it is not being a great divider. Most fundamentally though, we’d credit the community center for being the welcoming hub of the village, a place people trust to ask for help and to offer help.

OPINION You don’t have to like people to love them

P

astor Walter Mitty arrived at the Main Café last Saturday morning before anyone else in the men’s fellowship group got there, so he had time to check out the red Valentine’s Day hearts and cupids decorating the diner’s walls.

As he looked, the lifelong bachelor found himself thinking about Susan. He had spent a year up in Manitowoc taking care of his brother Herman who was, as it turned out, dying of cancer. Herman’s wife Susan had to work to pay the bills and their two boys were still going to school.

He had never thought about Susan in romantic terms. She was his brother’s wife, after all, and somehow that made her off limits, even in his fantasies. But Herman had been dead for two years now, and Mitty realized not only how close he and his brother’s family had become during that year he had lived with them, but also that now he had permission to think about Susan as being quite attractive.

Mitty’s fantasies were interrupted by seven male church members taking their places at the big oak table in the café’s overflow room, complaining about the cold weather and grumbling about the fact that the day before Punxsutawney Phil had seen his shadow.

Eric Anderson didn’t waste any time launching into a five minute diatribe about Pres. Trump’s State of the Union speech.

“He’s taking credit for the economy doing well,” Eric fumed, “but it was on the way up when Obama was in of office and Trump talks like it’s all because of him.”

“There you liberals go again,” said Alice sarcastically as she filled coffee cups. “You simply don’t like him, because he isn’t politically correct and tells it like it is. Did you see those Democrats during the State of the Union Speech? Even when President Trump said he wanted to give a pathway to citizenship to two million illegal immigrants, they sat there with sour pusses and wouldn’t admit that he was compromising.”

“Alice has a point,” said Dominique, after Alice had finished taking their orders. “You have to admit that even when the President says something liberals should like, they always respond with a ‘Yeah, but.’ They just don’t like or trust him as a person. But when southern Republicans admitted that they didn’t like Obama, Democrats blasted them as being racist.”

Eric shot back, “That’s different, Dominique, and you as an African American should be the first one to acknowledge that it is.”

“I’m not so sure it’s all that different,” Dominique continued, “and you have to admit that although the stock market took a nosedive yesterday on the whole it is doing great. I didn’t vote for Trump, as you all know, and wrote John Kasic in as a protest. But c’mon, at least give us Republicans credit for knowing something about how to stimulate the economy.”

“OK, OK,” Eric replied grudgingly, “but you also have to acknowledge that half the population in our country doesn’t own stock, and they are the very ones who swal-

lowed his promise that they’d be better off.”

As it turned out, Alice and, at times Dominique, were the only ones in the overflow room to say anything good about the current president. Basically, it wasn’t that they disagreed with all of his policies, which admittedly changed from day to day, but they just didn’t like the guy.

Mitty tried several times to intervene and get the two sides to see it from the other side’s point of view, but he eventually gave up trying.

On his way home, he felt a need to let off steam and stopped in at History/Herstory Bookstore to tell his friend Bernie Rolvaag what had happened. Just as he started venting, Fr. Bob Sullivan walked in and sat down with Bernie to listen to their friend.

“The problem,” said Mitty as he finished his rant, “is that those guys hate Trump’s guts, and that causes them to find a reason to discount everything he says. They just don’t trust him.”

Fr. Bob waited until he was sure that his friend had finished before saying, “Walt, do you remember Anders Nygren from seminary days?”

“You mean Agape and Eros?”

“Yeah, that’s the book we all read back in the day. Remember how Nygren argued that there are three kinds of love? Eros is the kind of love we are talking about when we say, ‘I love chocolate’ or ‘I’m attracted to you romantically.’ When you say ‘I love you’ in the eros sense of the word, you mean ‘I like you a lot.”

Mitty blushed, remembering his fantasies about his sister-in-law two hours earlier.

“Then philia is the kind of love that the members of your men’s group feel for each other. Call it fellowship or team spirit.”

“I think that’s how many of us in our history book discussion group feel about each other,” said Bernie.

“Kind of like, like-minded people being on the same page. Great minds running in the same channels. That sort of thing.”

“And then there’s agape,” Fr. Bob concluded. “It’s like when Jesus was dying on the cross and saying, ‘Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.’”

“But aren’t you saying,” Bernie protested, “that we need to love people we don’t like?”

“I think so.”

“But that’s humanly impossible,” Bernie pleaded.

“I think you’re right,” said Fr. Bob. “It isn’t humanly possible, but isn’t that what is needed in this country— in order to build bridges of understanding over this polarized chasm we all have created?”

As Pastor Walt walked home from Bernie’s book store it dawned on him that this year Valentine’s Day and Ash Wednesday were both on the same day. And he wondered, “How in the world do you observe both at the same time?”

He didn’t have the answer. But he had a suspicion that hearing the words “remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return” would help him say “I love you” better.

If the Contractor is not able to attend the pre-bid meeting, then they shall contact the Owner and/or the Construction Manager to make arrangements to visit the building. Contractors submitting a bid are required to certify on the Bid Form that they have visited the building to familiarize themselves with the existing conditions.

Information to bidders. Each bid must be accompanied by a bid bond or a cashier’s check in the amount of 10% of the total bid, made payable to Maywood Park District, as a guarantee that the successful bidder will promptly execute a satisfactory contract, will furnish a satisfactory performance bond and payment bond and proceed with the work. Upon failure to do so, the bidder shall forfeit the amount deposited as liquidated damages and no mistakes, errors, exclusions, or omissions on the part of the bidder shall excuse the bidder or entitle the bidder to a return of the aforementioned amount.

No bid will be considered unless the bidder shall furnish evidence satisfactory to the Board of Commissioners that the bidder has the necessary facilities, abilities, experience, equipment, financial and physical resources available to fulfill the conditions of the Contract and execute the work, should the Contract be awarded to such bidder.

This project is being financed, in part, with funds from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, “Park and Recreational Facil-

ity Construction Grant Program�

(PARC) grant program.

Maywood Park District encourages minority business firms to submit bids on this project and to utilize minority businesses as subcontractors for supplies, equipment, services and construction.

Not less than the prevailing wage shall be paid for labor on the work to be done as required by law. The PARC grant program requires that 50% of the labor hours on the project must be performed by residents of the State of Illinois.

Substantial Completion of the Work is required by September 28, 2018.

The Board of Commissioners reserves the right to reject any and all bids, to waive any technicalities and irregularities in the bidding, and to hold the bid proposals for a period of sixty (60) days from the date of opening set forth above.
