Up until seven years ago, Forest Park resident Heather Kadlec had created a good life for herself.

An all-state tennis player in high school, she remained physically active as an adult, had earned two masters degrees and was a beloved teacher at S.E. Gross Middle School in Brookfield.

Then, in 2011, she suffered a stroke that severely limited her ability to talk, read and write. Kadlec was just 41-years-old. Her story is one of grieving the loss of her past life and creating a new one for herself with the help of many allies.

Thank God it’s almost February

A

re you fighting depression this time of year? I know I am.

January has been described as the most depressing month of the year. In fact, January 24th has been singled out as the most depressing day of the year. So it’s no coincidence I received some disturbing news in the mail that day. But it wasn’t just bad news that triggered my downward spiral; it’s everything about January.

The gray skies, short days and cold temperatures all contribute to melancholy. For me, sleep is the great escape.

If napping were an Olympic event, I’d be a gold medalist. I have this great need for sleep, because depression is downright exhausting. It’s like a full-time job, where you get nothing done.

I get well-meaning advice from friends.

They suggest exercise, meditation and helping others. I’m too tired for any of that. Plus, the things that used to cheer me up don’t work anymore. For example, one of my great pleasures was reading both daily papers, while enjoying a meal. Now the news causes me so much anxiety, it gives me indigestion.

I know people who take medication to even their moods. I don’t take any pills, unless you count two aspirin in the morning.

Searching for a remedy, I came across “5 Ways to Survive January,” by Therese Borchard.

Her first suggestion was to “Stop Doing One Thing I Don’t Enjoy.” Well, that’s an easy one: stop going to work. Next is “Clean Out One Area of the House.” I took advantage of the holidays to give my office a thorough cleaning. “Bright-Light Therapy” was another step. I’m not sure what this is but I did replace some burnt-out bulbs.

“Try Something New” inspired me to go to trivia night at the Friendly Tap. “Make a List of Lessons Learned” sounds like a good idea but I haven’t gotten around to it yet.

I received another source of inspiration from a friend, who was visiting from a warm climate. She, first of all, wondered how any of us could survive a Chicago winter. She was visiting families where little kids were bouncing off the walls because it was too cold to play outside. But since we can’t all move to the Southern Hemisphere, she suggested giving Happiness University a try.

This school was founded by Alice Inoue.

My friend attended a workshop led by Alice, who is the university’s Chief Happiness Officer. Alice’s school has over a dozen teachers, who love helping others achieve happiness.

One teacher has the hopeful title of “Joyful Aging Facilitator.” Students can take on-line courses to help their personal growth.

At the workshop, my friend learned that humans are hard-wired to be negative for survival purposes and that negativity helps us grow. However, some exercise their “negative muscle” a bit too vigorously and turn into negative people. These people have a fear inside that causes them to become control freaks. We have to protect ourselves from them. They are the reason God invented Caller ID. The seminar suggested we start meeting, or emailing with positive people. Alice said that positive exists in every negative situation but we don’t always recognize it. So when you enroll at Happiness University, be prepared to learn how to “Create a Positive Mindset in any Workplace;” “Overcome Stress, Worry and Overwhelm in an Hour;” and “Get Along Better with Anyone.”

Now that we’ve solved our January depression problem, I’m reading an enlightening article titled, “19 Reasons Why Mid-February is Hands Down the Most Depressing Time of the Year.”

Petra Falafel adds to the dining diversity in Forest Park Named after falafels and a famous archaeological site

Ibrahim Freaih always dreamed of opening a Middle Eastern restaurant. On Jan. 2, that dream came true. Freaih opened Petra Falafel at 7314 Madison St., which specializes in baba ghanoush, tabbouleh, chicken shawarma and, of course, falafels.

As it turned out, Freaih had to travel 6,200 miles to realize his dream. Freaih was born in Jordan, the home of Petra, or “Rose City,” a famous archaeological site that contains tombs and temples carved into pink sandstone cliffs. Jordan shares borders with Syria, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Israel and Palestine.

Freaih arrived in the U.S. in 1989. Although trained as a pharmacist, Freaih, like many immigrants, never worked in his chosen career in the U.S., instead making his paycheck by

Mais said that, although Ibrahim lives in Chicago, he

knows this area well. “He loves the community,” she said, “and loves the people who live here.

He talks all the time about how nice they are.”

“The last thing I want to say,” Mais added. “Is that my father is a person who has spent his life on us kids and his wife, who passed away a long time ago.

Most of the time he thinks of us and our education—how we are going to be a success in our life.

He is the greatest father in the world.”

Living Fresh Market coming to Forest Park Plaza Grocery store looks to fill former Ultra Foods space in April

There’s a new grocery store coming to town and its name is Living Fresh Market, named after its plan to feature about 250 varieties of apples, oranges and other produce.

“We’re going to do our very best to fight for Forest Park folks to shop at the location,” said co-owner Ken Casaccio. “We want to make it as inviting as we possibly can for them, offer different services they’ve never had before here.”

Living Fresh is owned by the four Casaccio brothers — Ken, Daniel, Terry and Timothy John — third-generation grocers who also own Leamington Foods, a chain of three grocery stores in Hillside and Chicago’s West Side.

Ken Casaccio said Living Fresh is managed by GCC LLC an entity that’s separate from Leamington, which is managed under Leamington Foods Inc. Leamington Foods has endured its share of criticism. Last summer, residents on Chicago’s West Side complained about the location on Roosevelt Road near Homan Avenue during a community meeting, according to the Austin Weekly News, demanding better service and products. The stores also have garnered poor reviews online.

Casaccio emphasized that the two companies are run independently.

“It has nothing to do with the other; it’s a separate venture all by itself,” Casaccio said of Living Fresh.

“Customers are demanding more, and our stores that we have are a little on the smaller side,” he added. “Those locations are not physically able to have multiple departments. This store does.”

Living Fresh will occupy 70,200 square feet and in addition to groceries will offer a bakery, butcher, soup and salad bar, and hot foods section, where workers prepare fresh sandwiches, Casaccio said.

The grocery store will also offer an international aisle with Hispanic, Italian, German and Chinese items. About 90 employees will work at Living Fresh, said Gus Casaccio, president of Leamington Foods.

Construction on Living Fresh started in January, and the store is set to open in early April. The store replaces the old Ultra Foods in Forest Park Plaza, which closed in June 2017 after parent company Strack and

Oak Park firm moves to the old Piggyback Tavern Wilks Communications paid 31 percent less than original asking price

Wilks Communications Group is moving into the old Piggyback Tavern restaurant in Forest Park after an increase in employees squeezed the integrated marketing and communications firm out of its Oak Park space.

Wilks closed on 410 Circle Ave. in late December 2017, paying $275,000 for the property, 31 percent less than the space’s original $399,000 asking price, according to Midwest Real Estate Data. Restaurateur Rachel Dennis opened Piggyback in 2012, and closed the BBQ restaurant last summer. Dennis also owns Lake Street Kitchen & Bar in Oak Park and Randolph Tavern in the Loop.

“We have been looking at real estate for the last couple of years because we’ve been growing quickly as an organization,” said

Casaccio grew up in Oak Park and said he regularly goes to lunch along Madison Street in Forest Park, after attending to business at Leamington Foods on Chicago’s West Side.

When Casaccio heard the Ultra at 7520 W. Roosevelt Rd. was closing, he said he immediately contacted the mall’s owner and the village about leasing the space. The mall is owned by Forest Park Plaza LLC, a for-profit entity of Living Word Christian Center.

Strack and Van Til and the banks were about to place items from the old Ultra for auction in bankruptcy court.

Village Administrator Tim Gillian said he believes Living Fresh purchased all the old items from Ultra.

“Once the auction happened it would have all been over with. Once they damage and take the equipment out in such a rough fashion, it’s hard to replace,” Casaccio said. “It would have been impossible to go back in.”

Living Fresh signed a lease that spans about 40 years for the space, Casaccio said.

He declined to disclose the terms of the lease.

Gillian said the village is currently working on a redevelopment agreement with Living Fresh. He said Living Fresh will be eligible to receive funding from the Roosevelt Road Tax Increment Financing District.

Because the village is still hammering out the redevelopment agreement, Gillian said he was not sure the exact amount of funds that would benefit the new Living Fresh, but that disbursement will depend on whether Living Fresh meets set sales targets.

Gillian said he unsure of how much sales tax revenue Living Fresh will generate for the village. In 2016, Ultra handed $130,000 in sales tax revenue to Forest Park.

“When Ultra announced they were leaving, it certainly was a concern for the village how we would get that space occupied, because obviously the sales tax revenue is important to us,” Gillian said. “We were very fortunate at about the same time Leamington … happened to be looking for space at the same time. It was a great coincidence.”

Wilks said the Forest Park location is about twice the size of the communication group’s current space at 1033 South Blvd. in Oak Park. He said the firm doubled its headcount and revenue in 2017, and “we’ll probably increase by at least 50 percent in 2018,” he said. He declined to specify the company’s annual revenue but credits a loyal customer base and word-of-mouth referrals for driving growth.

Wilks has around 15 people working at its firm, with clients ranging from food ingredient corporations like Nielsen-Massey Vanillas, a manufacturer of vanilla extract based in Waukegan, to nonprofits like

World Vision International, a humanitarian organization. Because food ingredient and food corporation clients are “our real specialty,” Wilks said he plans to install a test and prep kitchen in the space.

Wilks has hired Eastlake Studios architecture firm to draw up plans for how to change the restaurant into office space. He said he hopes to start construction on the 22,497-square-foot space by March, tearing out the booths and tables, replacing the lighting, updating the floor and more. Tuscan Lofts condominiums are located above the soon-to-be office space.

“We’re happy to have them in town,” said Steve Glinke, director of the Forest Park Department of Public Health and Safety.

“In that particular mixed-use building, a restaurant was just a little bit too much with fumes and stuff like that. General business use in there will restore a little more peace.”

Tapan Shah said he felt happy but not surprised when he learned the winning, $4.25 million lottery ticket was purchased at his 7-Eleven on Jan. 20.

From simple scratch-offs or Powerballs, Shah said winning lotto tickets have been purchased at his establishments at least four times before. Luck follows him, Shah said.

“We always have something here,” he said.

Shah will keep half of 1 percent of the total $4.25 million — the rest goes to the ticket winner and 7-Eleven. As Jan. 29, no one had come to claim the winning ticket purchased from 7749 Roosevelt Road.

The winning numbers from the Jan. 22 drawing are: 11-19-26-28-48-49. Shah said the ticket must have been purchased on Saturday, Jan. 20.

Shah won’t get his $21,250 payout if nobody claims the ticket, but he feels confident that the new millionaire won’t let this op-

portunity pass by. When the ticket does get claimed, Shah plans to use his earnings to pay off school for his freshman college-age son, who is majoring in sports management and finance at the University of Minnesota Carlson School of Management. Shah said his son dreams of one day working for ESPN. Shah said winning tickets were purchased at his 7-Eleven in 2014 and 2011. He said he spent his winnings on his architect son’s education at the University of Illinois Chicago.

“We sell so many tickets here; more people play here,” he said.

The winner can claim the prize at one of the Illinois Lottery’s five prize centers, which are located in Chicago, Des Plaines, Rockford, Springfield or Fairview Heights.

Stolen car crashes in Austin A man crashed a stolen car into a garage in Austin, after being chased by Forest Park police through the city. Police ran a registration check of an Oldsmobile at a stop sign at Marengo and Adams and realized it was stolen two days before in Chicago. Officers tried to curb the vehicle at Harlem and I-290, but the Oldsmobile entered I-290, weaved in and out of cars in the center lane and then exited at Austin Boulevard.

After weaving through neighborhoods, the car finally crashed into a garage and utility pole at 5254 W. Harrison St. The driver, passenger and backseat passenger all fled eastbound down an alley. An officer caught one suspect, 16, as he tried to hop a fence behind 5226 W. Congress Ave. He was charged with criminal trespass to a vehicle and resisting an officer, and released to his mother that night. Officers were not able to locate the other offenders.

Car entered, lunch bag stolen Two men stole a lunch bag from an unlocked car parked on the 800 block of Hannah Avenue about 1:49 p.m. on Jan. 22. A Forest Park man said he stopped by his nephew’s house to pick up a power tool, parked his car and left the door unlocked. Two men walked up to the vehicle and opened the driver’s

side door, according to video footage from cameras mounted on the home. They took the lunch bag and walked east on Hannah Avenue, down South Harrison Street alley.

The lunch bag was later recovered in the parking lot of Tacabron, 7332 Harrison St.

according to a police report. She made a $4 purchase at 7401 Madison St. and received $96 in change.

■■A woman used a phony $100 at Bed Bath and Beyond about 7 p.m. on Jan. 20. She made an $11 purchase at 215 Harlem Ave. and received $89 in change.

Truck batteries lifted At some point between 2 p.m., Jan. 23 and noon, Jan. 24, someone removed four 12V batteries from two trucks parked at 7400 Greenburg Road. The batteries were left unsecured outside.

At some point between 9 p.m., Jan. 17 and 5 a.m., Jan. 22, someone removed two copper downspouts from the Park District of Forest Park, according to a police report. One of the downspouts was located on the south side of 7501 Harrison St.; the other was located on the east side of the building.

Car ransacked A woman parked her car about 5 p.m. in her stall in the parking lot of her home at 1037 Desplaines Ave. on Jan. 23, according to a police report. When she returned to her car about 11:20 a.m. the next day, she found the car unlocked and the center console and glove box ransacked, but nothing was taken.

She suspects she accidentally unlocked the car via remote the night before.

Restaurant burglary At some point between 11:57 p.m. on Jan. 20 and 12:05 a.m. Jan.21, someone stole $1,000 from Fuji Grill, according to a police report. The store owner walked into 315 Harlem Ave. the next day and noticed the black bag where he stores money missing.

Residents were evacuated from a building on Marengo Avenue about 5:10 a.m. on Jan. 26, after a small fire broke out in the laundry room, according to a police report. Forest Park firefighters extinguished the flames and said there was no sign of foul play.

Burnt soup, kitchen fire Police and firefighters responded to a fire on the first floor of a building on the 200 block of Circle Avenue about 11:22 p.m. on Jan. 26.

Officers saw a woman exiting a window from the first floor, and helped her out the structure. She told them she works as an overnight nurse, put chicken soup on the stove, fell asleep and then woke up to the smell of smoke. Firefighters extinguished the fire.

These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Forest Park Police Department, Jan. 22-29, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

Police offer insights on violent crime at community meeting Police urge residents to call 911 if they see anything suspicious

On Jan. 4, intruders broke into a home on the 900 block of Franklin Avenue, stealing two cars. Almost two weeks later, they came back for more. Police had recovered the cars, but offenders forced open the home’s garage and took back a vehicle, having saved the keys from the last time.

That incident was at the top of about 70 people’s minds at the River Forest Community Crime Prevention Meeting, Jan. 24, as attendees waited to hear advice on how to avoid the rash of car thefts, carjackings, and home burglaries occurring in the River Forest, Forest Park, Oak Park and Elmwood Park communities.

“We have a proven crime prevention strategy in place, a regional approach because we know the same people are going into Oak Park and Forest Park and Maywood; they don’t know the border,” said River Forest Detective James Greenwood.

From November 2017 to Jan. 22, 2018, there have been 15 carjackings across those towns, the most occurring in Oak Park, according to data compiled by River Forest police. A carjacking occurs when a car is taken through the threat or use of physical force. Fifty-five cars were also stolen during the same time period, the majority in Oak Park. There have been 29 residential burglaries during this same time period, most in Oak Park.

An artists life from page 1 Kadlec was exhibiting meant that she was having a stroke, because, well, at 41-yearsold she just didn’t fit the prototype of a person experiencing an ischemic stroke, which is when a blood clot in the brain blocks blood flow to the cerebral arteries.

Her diagnosis was made more than four hours after the stroke began, which meant the window of opportunity for doctors to administer a clot-dissolving drug had closed.

The damage to the left side of Kadlec’s brain was complete.

Kadlec lay in a coma for four days, and stayed in the hospital for a month. After fusing together major arteries, surgeons removed the top left part of Kadlec’s skull, in an effort to relieve pressure on her brain.

Kadlec then spent a month at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago before coming home. Her “full-time job” the first five years after her stroke involved visits to doctors and therapy.

Physically, Kadlec lost the use of her right hand and the ability to speak except for a few words. Husband Jonathan Shack explained that the left side of the brain, where the damage caused by the stroke is located, is where communication is centered. Kadlec’s working vocabulary consists mainly of “yes” and

Kadlec’s loss of physical abilities was huge, but perhaps more devastating was the loss of the three activities that gave great

meaning to her life. The first, and most important to her, was her work as a teacher and then an assistant principal and curriculum coordinator in Brookfield. For Kadlec, teaching was a passion, not just a job.

A second major loss for her was the ability to read; the third the ability to drive a

car. Driving meant independence. Although Kadlec’s skills are no longer sufficient to drive in traffic, she still finds great pleasure in occasionally going out with her husband and driving around an empty parking lot.

Kadlec said she felt depressed and angry immediately following her stroke, and that she still feels some sadness at losing the ability to teach, read and drive.

But she has responded to the loss of these sources of meaning by creating a new life for herself. Perhaps the most noticeable part of her new life is her art. Six months after her stroke, Kadlec took a watercolor class at the Oak Park Art League taught by a man, who she refers to simply as “Tony,” who

has become her mentor. Learning to paint with her left hand, Kadlec gradually acquired the ability to paint pictures and print them as greeting cards.

These cards have been good enough to sell. Kadlec’s paintings and greeting cards are exhibited at art shows and are for sale at Empowering Gardens in Forest Park and Fitzgerald’s Fine Stationary, Visit Oak Park and at the Sears Pharmacy in Oak Park.

Not only has the creation of art given meaning to Kadlec’s life, it has become a way to make friends and form a community.

Kadlec’s own adventurous spirit has also served her well. She has formed relationships up and down Madison Street by regularly venturing out and exploring local businesses. Recently, when her husband tried to order a coffee for her at Counter Coffee, the barista told him, “That’s not the way she likes it.”

Another door which opened a new life for Kadlec has been music therapy. Shack explained that the undamaged part of her brain, the right hemisphere, is the center

for music and art. In music therapy, Kadlec discovered that when she practices singing a song, she is able to vocalize many more words than if she tried to simply speak from the left side of her brain. Once at a concert, she was able to sing a whole Maroon 5 song.

Most important has been the loving support she has received from many sources.

When Kadlec speaks, she often touches the arm and shoulder of her husband. He, in turn, noted how many of her friends have stuck with her and support her to this day.

He choked up when he recalled how her former sixth, seventh and eighth graders raised $18,000 in a one night fundraiser they organized on her behalf.

Shack also raved about the Stroke Camp that the couple attends a few times a year. At Camp, volunteers treat stroke victims and their caretakers to a weekend where they take care of all of their needs. Its goal is to allow stroke victims to get away and find support and inspiration in each other.

What is the difference between a monofocal implant and a bifocal implant?

In the past, the IOL corrected distance vision only; this is called a monofocal implant. Patients who undergo cataract surgery with a monofocal implant still need reading glasses. Recent advances incorporate a bifocal into the IOL. The bifocal implant allows patients to read without glasses, drive without glasses, and do virtually all of their activities without glasses.

What will I experience during cataract surgery with a bifocal implant?

Cataract surgery is performed on an outpatient basis using eye drops to numb your eye; no shots are necessary. The operation takes approximately 20 minutes after which you will rest for a short time before going home. Post-operatively, you will be asked to instill eye drops for a few weeks after surgery. You will have 90% of you vision back within one day and your eye will be completely healed within two weeks.

Welcome Living Fresh

I

n a retail world more focused on contraction than expansion, it is nothing but good news that the local owners of the small and independent Leamington Foods grocery chain have chosen Forest Park Plaza as the site of its newest store.

It is also good news that the four Casaccio brothers, the third-generation owners of Leamington, are promising to deliver a modern version of a grocery store, one that focuses on fresh produce, in-store bakery, salad bar, ethnic selections and a butcher behind the counter. In a world of Mariano’s and Pete’s Fresh Market, there’s no way for a large-space grocer to thrive offering up your mom’s A&P. The brothers also recognize they need to do better than the current version of their own Leamington Foods which has stores on Chicago’s West Side and in Hillside. Those stores, while welcome in the food desert of Austin, have traditionally underserved their community.

Now with a new name, Living Fresh Market, a large and fairly well-appointed space inherited from the bankrupt Strack and Van Til’s Ultra Foods, and a village delighted to have a key retail vacancy so quickly filled, the Casaccio brothers have a terrific opportunity to be bold and ambitious.

Considerable credit goes to village hall, Mayor Anthony Calderone, and Living Word Christian Center, owner of the mall, for adding a second key anchor to the plaza in just a few months’ time. HOBO opened in the shuttered Kmart last fall.

The village was well positioned on Roosevelt through its recent expansion and updating of TIF districts on the street. As final negotiations on a redevelopment agreement between Leamington and village government continue, having the flexibility a TIF offers will be important.

The balance, as always, is in providing a major development with taxpayer-funded resources that create incentive for a developer without over-delivering. A healthy mall delivers strong property-tax return. A grocery store, though, returns a smaller sales tax bounce than a typical retailer as food is taxed at a lower rate than other goods.

Forest Park’s government has done this dance with retailers and developers before and we’re confident the village will make a fair deal.

Reinvesting in Proviso schools Step-by-step the Proviso Township High Schools are making their way back from the cliff ’s edge. Three years into the rebuild, attention is shifting to the physical plants of the district’s three high schools.

Last week Perkins+Will, the respected Chicago architectural firm hired by the district to assess the structures, met with community members to answer questions and hear concerns. The firm announced the schools structurally sound which is really very good news. However, the architect presenting, noted that there has not been a notable investment in Proviso East since the 1960s. That is a horrifying indicator of the past gross mismanagement of this district.

Still ahead — June is the target — is a draft master plan from Perkins+Will. The school board and administrators will than need to sort out the financial resources available over several years to fund reinvestment and to set priorities for funding.

We’ll be arguing for Proviso East to be at the top of these lists.

Preparing the child for the road

uring coffee hour after church years ago, I watched a toddler crawl under a table. His mother followed her child, and placed her hand between him and the underside of the table top.

The mother was, of course, instinctively protecting her toddler from standing up, banging his head, and crying out in pain.

I’ve done the same kind of thing many times when my children were that age.

Now I watch my daughter protecting her 1½-year-old in the same way.

But I got to thinking. What if that mother at the coffee hour did not protect her child?

What if the little tyke stood up and banged his head on the table top? He’d be in pain for a minute or two, but he’d never stand up under a table again, and he would have learned a painful lesson about “looking before leaping.”

So I am asking myself, “Did that mom do her kid a favor by protecting him from pain? Or did she rob him of an opportunity to learn something about how to move around in a world with limits and consequences?”

I read a soundbite recently that goes, “Prepare your child for the road, not the road for your child.”

The saying is based on the metaphor of life as a bumpy road. Most of us, I assume, would agree that the road of life has many bumps, some of them very painful. So here’s the question I’m asking myself: “Should I teach my 4½-year-old granddaughter that life will often be difficult and sometimes painful, so that even at her young age she will be at least a little prepared for the inevitable bumps that upset her ride? Or do I try to proactively smooth out the bumps I see in her future before she gets to them?”

Or, to get current: “Do we prevent this young girl, whom I love, from hearing about Larry Nassar?” That, of course, is a judgment call I’m going to let her parents make. But I think you get the point.

As I listened last week to story after painful story from Larry Nassar’s victims, I heard some of them acknowledge that they had been naïve and taught as children to trust people in positions of authority. I’m not trying to blame victims here. And shame on me if I ever let someone hurt my granddaughter. But I wonder what might not have happened if those young athletes had been taught that a small percentage of adults should not be trusted and if they had been coached on how to distinguish between the bad actors and the vast majority of adults who are trustworthy.

A second reason for telling those stories is that, in the telling, I will be reminded of my own responsibilities as

an adult. When my granddaughter is placed in my care, I, as the adult, am the one responsible for her protection, not her. I will have to strike that balance between letting her experience appropriate amounts of independence while also shielding her from danger. Not protecting a toddler from banging his head on a table top is one thing. Letting a creep like Nassar scar my granddaughter for life is another. None of the many men I know in this town are, to my knowledge, creeps like Nassar. But, based on statistical probability, I have to suppose that there is at least one out there waiting.

Another reason for not always telling stories with happy endings is what we’ve learned about our bodies’ immune systems. We’ve learned that white blood cells — which are designed to battle alien invaders — become better fighters and increase in number when they are exposed in manageable doses to some of those invaders.

One church management consultant taught me years ago a way to create a resilient, healthy congregation.

He said every once in a while I should introduce a “nonlethal” controversy to the members, an issue which would expose divisions among them but not so toxic that it would produce permanent harm. His argument was that, in so doing, the “white blood cells” in the faith community would get strengthened. They would learn they didn’t have to avoid controversy but could respond to it in healthy ways.

Larry Nassar’s victims, like many combat veterans, experienced bumps in their roads which were so devastating that they overwhelmed their white cells, if you will, instead of strengthening and increasing them.

Some wounds take a much longer time to heal, if they heal at all.

That said, public awareness has been raised and people are finally taking the problem of sexual assault seriously only because some women had the courage to risk their careers — and risk the humiliation of not being believed — to speak out publicly about what happened to them. I have to assume that the parents of those women prepared them for the road instead of trying to smooth out every bump because they “just wanted them to be happy.”

It’s always a judgment call when we try to decide how much of the world’s fallen-ness to expose our children to and at what stage of their development. But no matter how difficult it is to apply the principle to real-life situations, the principle remains true: Protecting our children and grandchildren from all harm and struggle is doing them and our society no favor.

What got lost I am one of the 38 volunteers who went around with the petition asking for a vote on video gaming. I have lived in Forest Park for 24 years. I am currently a member and former board member of the Historical Society.

I joined the PTOs of the Forest Park schools my daughter attended. I was president of the PTO at Proviso Math and Science Academy for several years. When my husband and I go out to spend money, we start in Forest Park.

(A significant amount of our income ends up at Schauer Hardware!) I love Forest Park.

I would like to point out what’s being lost in the discussion about putting video gaming on the ballot.

What we have lost in the back and forth of the parsing of language, the decision to throw out all 276 painstakingly gathered petition pages (instead of the handful that had the wrong heading), deciding whether or not signers understand what 90 days means, or whether or not inactive voters should be counted in the overall total of voters to be considered when calculating the percentage of registered voters you need to sign a petition (raising the required signatures to an almost impossible number) is the fact that thousands of citizens have asked for the chance to vote on this important issue.

Thousands.

I walked around with these petitions. When I met with neighbors, carefully explaining that the petition was to put the issue on the ballot, an overwhelming majority of them wanted a vote. I even met with folks who expressed they were pro-gaming but thought it was only fair that everyone get a vote.

We can get lost in the weeds. The minutia and nuance of the law bogs down the discussion. We focus on the trees, not the forest, not Forest Park.

Here’s the big picture: Thousands of Forest Park citizens dutifully printed their name, address, and then signed petitions asking for a vote. Thousands of Forest Parkers, who the folks on the election committee are supposed to represent, are asking to vote. Let’s not lose sight of what is happening. Let’s not lose sight of what’s at risk.

All interested persons, including all persons owning taxable real property located within the proposed Special Service Area, will be given an opportunity to be heard regarding the formation and boundaries of the proposed Special Service Area and the levy of taxes for the proposed Special Service Area and all such persons may object to the formation of the proposed Special Service Area, and the levy of taxes affecting the proposed Special Service Area.

The purpose of the establishment of the proposed Special Service Area is to provide special municipal services, namely, to design, construct, install and maintain speed tables mid-block on the 1200 blocks of North East Avenue, Columbian Avenue, Linden Avenue and North Euclid Avenue, including all associated costs of engineering, construction, inspection, and legal fees for the speed tables, and the Village’s costs for mailing, publication, recording, and other necessary and incidental expenses incurred in establishing the Special Service Area.

At the public hearing, there will be considered whether the proposed Special Service Area shall be established; the boundaries of the proposed Special Service Area; the special services to be provided and the estimated amount of funding required. If the Special Service Area is established, a special tax will be levied for a period not to exceed 5 years and not to exceed an amount of 0.041% per annum of assessed value, as equalized, against the Property included in the Special Service Area. The proposed amount of the tax levy for the special municipal services for the initial year for which taxes will be levied is $4,500.00.

The public hearing may be adjourned by the President and Board of Trustees to another date without further notice other than by a motion fixing the time and place of the adjourned meeting, which shall be entered upon the minutes of the hearing.

If a petition is signed by at least 51% of the electors residing within the Special Service Area and by at least 51% of the owners of record of the land included within the boundaries of the proposed Special Service Area and is filed with the Village Clerk within 60 days following the final adjournment of the public hearing objecting to the creation of the proposed Special Service Area, the imposition of a tax, or the issuance of the SSA Bonds for the provision of special services to the Special Service Area, no such special service area may be created and taxes levied or imposed.

If the Contractor is not able to attend the pre-bid meeting, then they shall contact the Owner and/or the Construction Manager to make arrangements to visit the building. Contractors submitting a bid are required to certify on the Bid Form that they have visited the building to familiarize themselves with the existing conditions.

Information to bidders. Each bid must be accompanied by a bid bond or a cashier’s check in the amount of 10% of the total bid, made payable to Maywood Park District, as a guarantee that the successful bidder will promptly execute a satisfactory contract, will furnish a satisfactory performance bond and payment bond and proceed with the work. Upon failure to do so, the bidder shall forfeit the amount deposited as liquidated damages and no mistakes, errors, exclusions, or omissions on the part of the bidder shall excuse the bidder or entitle the bidder to a return of the aforementioned amount.

No bid will be considered unless the bidder shall furnish evidence satisfactory to the Board of Commissioners that the bidder has the necessary facilities, abilities, experience, equipment, financial and physical resources available to fulfill the conditions of the Contract and execute the work, should the Contract be awarded to such bidder.

This project is being financed, in part, with funds from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, “Park and Recreational Facil-

ity Construction Grant Program” (PARC) grant program.

Maywood Park District encourages minority business firms to submit bids on this project and to utilize minority businesses as subcontractors for supplies, equipment, services and construction.

Not less than the prevailing wage shall be paid for labor on the work to be done as required by law. The PARC grant program requires that 50% of the labor hours on the project must be performed by residents of the State of Illinois.

Substantial Completion of the Work is required by September 28, 2018.

The Board of Commissioners reserves the right to reject any and all bids, to waive any technicalities and irregularities in the bidding, and to hold the bid proposals for a period of sixty (60) days from the date of opening set forth above.
