hen Melody Kratz turned 13, she started getting migraines, the pain centered behind her left eye, making her feel so nauseous that moving felt unbearable. Kratz’s father took her to the doctor, who thought she had allergies and prescribed weekly injections. They didn’t work. “You start questioning everything,” she said, “like, ‘What are you even doing here if you’re going to live in this much pain?’”

Kratz tried acupuncture, botox and visiting a chiropractor. She was prescribed a variety of drugs, including Topamax, a preventive medicine that made her “feel lightheaded, kind of fearful that I might pass out, my vision kind of blurred.” She tried Excedrin Migraines and “those seemed to work for me. I just have to take too much of it unfortunately,” she said.

“So that’s why I’m grateful now for CBD. My intake is much less.”

Last summer, Kratz started using cannabidiol (CBD) oil as a way to treat anxiety. The World Health Organization says CBD may have therapeutic effects for those suffering from several ailments, including epilepsy, psychosis, multiple sclerosis and more. Kratz credits See CDB OIL on page 11

New beginnings for ongoing dreams

anuary is for new beginnings. Claudia Medina and her family are definitely starting a new episode in their lives. Claudia has just fulfilled a lifelong dream of building her own Montessori school. It took months of hard work but they completed a twostory addition to their house at 1044 Dunlop. The first floor will house Bilingual Montessori Lab Academy for teaching students and training teachers.

Medina received her Montessori training in Miami. She moved there in 1992 to flee violence in her native Columbia.

After completing her training, she earned a scholarship to come to Chicago. She has now been training teachers for 16 years in far-flung places like Norway and the Czech Republic. Having her own lab school will enable Medina to remain closer to home and family.

Her husband, Rosalio, and three children, Camilo, Gabriel and Maria Teresa, helped provide the muscle to build the school.

Ground was broken on March 7, 2018 and the family worked weekends to complete the interior. They did the plumbing and installed sinks. They finished the window frames and did all the painting.

Claudia and Rosalio laid the heated floor.

They also built the shelves and furnished the school with kid-sized tables and chairs.

They bought their Montessori teach-

ing supplies from a school in Indiana that was closing after 50 years. The final result is a cozy 800-square-foot classroom, decorated with colorful teaching tools. It has the classic look and feel of a Montessori school.

Medina’s roots run deep in this method of education. Maria Montessori taught her grandfather, Bernardo, when he was 3 years old. She then started a training center in Bogota, igniting a passion in Medina’s family to become teachers.

Medina’s house, meanwhile, has deep roots in Forest Park history. It was originally a farmhouse built in 1892 by the O’Connor family. They farmed south Forest Park, prior to the land being subdivided for housing. The three-bedroom sits on a double-lot that is 175-feet deep. This will give students plenty of space for outdoor activities, like gardening.

Medina is planning daytime classes for K-4th grades. She will provide Spanish-only guitar classes, so students can learn language and music at the same time, and she will add after-school Spanish classes. She will also help daycare operators with bilingual education. Once she obtains accreditation as a training center, she will instruct teachers on weekends and evenings.

I can personally testify that Medina’s training is effective. During a half-day workshop, she taught me how to fully

engage my ESL students and dramatically increase their productivity.

I call Claudia a “force of nature” for her tireless energy. It could take her 2-3 years to become fully accredited but she has already accomplished so much. Besides completing construction, she has secured her not-for-prof not-for-profit status. She plans to charge tuition but will make Montessori affordable to the community.

Besides wanting to teach Forest Park kids, Claudia and Rosalio believe the project taught their own kids some valuable life lessons. It has shown them how to make a vision reality. They learned a similar lesson when they campaigned for their mother to be elected to the District 209 Board of Education. Medina completed her school’s construction in time to conduct her reelection campaign.

Not that all of the construction is finished. They are still working on the living space above the school. They also plan to finish the basement and install offices and meeting rooms. Neighborhood kids have helped in what Medina calls a labor of love.

Bill Dwyer’s family also donated a sign they fashioned to honor his late wife, Carol.

It says, simply, “Dream.”

Q: Why does Forest Park have a commissioner form of government?

Neighboring towns of Oak Park, River Forest and Maywood had organized formal governments, often related to the temper temperance movement. Harlem (which was Forest Park’s original name), on the other hand, had saloons, a racetrack, and hummed a different tune than its neighbors.

In November of 1911, Forest Park adopted the commission form of government by a majority of more than 200 votes. The commission form of government is limited to cities or villages under 200,000 population. Voters elect a mayor

Village approves contract with clerical workers AFSCME union agrees to three-year pact

After eight months of negotiations, the Forest Park Village Council and the union representing village clerical workers have agreed on a three-year contract.

The village council voted unanimously, Jan. 14, to approve the contract with American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Local 3026, replacing the contract that expired April 30, 2018.

Under the contract, employees will receive a 1 percent salary increase, retroactive to May 2018, then increases of 2 percent in May 2019, and 2.5 percent in May 2020. The increases are the same for step employees and non-step employees. Similar salary increases were included in contracts approved in May 2018 with Automobile Mechanics Local 701, which represents the village’s one mechanic, and Forest Park Firefighters Local 2753, which represents firefighters.

Commissioner Joe Byrnes commended staff members for their efforts on the contract.

“I want to thank the negotiation team who put in some hard work on this thing,” he said. “Everybody is in agreement that it’s a good contract for both sides.”

“Overall it’s a fair deal for the village and for the union,” Mayor Anthony Calderone said. “We continue to bring parity to wages with all our bargaining units.”

For the first time, the contract includes four police communications clerks who were previously represented by the Illinois Fraternal Order of Police Labor Council. The communications clerk position was created as part of the process of the village joining the West Suburban Consoli-

dated Dispatch Center (WSCDC) in May 2017 to meet a state mandate. At that time, the village’s 911 center closed, police dispatchers employed by the village were hired by WSCDC, and the police dispatcher position was eliminated.

Village officials explained previously that the clerical duties of the new position are more in line with other village clerical workers who are represented by AFSCME. Communications clerks have been represented by Local 3026 under a memorandum of understanding with the union approved in October 2017.

The new contract removes the requirement that employees who are not members of Local 3026 must pay a fair share fee to the chapter for collective bargaining and contract administration services. In the Janus vs. AFSCME case concerning the power of labor unions to collect fees from nonunion members, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in June 2018 that such union fees in the public sector violate the First Amendment, overturning a 1977 decision that had previously allowed such fees.

Also new to the contract is a clause allowing the village to reopen negotiations if action by the state of Illinois restricts Forest Park’s revenue collections. Specifically, the village could reopen negotiations if the formula used to determine the village’s state-shared revenue from the Local Government Distributive Fund is reduced by 10 percent or more or if property taxes are frozen by action of the Illinois General Assembly.

Calderone said inclusion of the clause was suggested by the village’s legal representatives and noted that officials in neighboring municipalities also are including such language in their union contracts.

Except for communications clerks, paid holidays for fulltime permanent employees are New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Full-time communication clerks will receive 80 hours of holiday leave, to be added to a holiday bank, regardless of whether the employee worked on the actual holiday. Holiday leave is to be utilized with prior permission from the chief of police or designee. All holiday leave must be used by Dec. 31 of each year or else forfeited.

Village Administrator Tim Gillian said no changes were made to vacation or health insurance benefits, noting that other changes were due to “language cleanups.”

In addition to communications clerks, the AFSCME contract covers over 30 employees, mostly full-time clerical workers. Positions covered include switchboard, head cashier, accounts payable, accounts receivable and utility billing. Information management employee classifications include civilian parking clerk, civilian records clerk, fulltime and part-time civilian parking enforcement officer, and part-time class taker. Other employee classifications include Fire Department secretary, assistant clubhouse coordinator, clubhouse coordinator, Pace dial-a-ride driver, administrative secretary, secretary/clerk, building inspector, senior building inspector, custodian and special events coordinator.

Police officers represented by Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 211 continue to work without a contract. The previous contract expired April 30, 2018. Gillian said negotiations are continuing, noting the village is “getting close with them.”

Office staff worked nine months without a contract before reaching an agreement in February 2016, and police officers worked two years without a contract before reaching an agreement in May 2017.

The contract between the village and Teamsters Local 705, which represents public works employees, does not expire until April 30, 2010. The contract with Automobile Mechanics Local 701 expires April 30, 2021 and the contract with Firefighters Local 2753 expires April 30, 2022.

After donation, Empowering Gardens saves Generous donation allows nonprofit to save for first time for garden center site

Empowering Gardens Inc. raised approximately $36,000 after Giving Tuesday this holiday season, with a “good portion” of funds being raised by the 50th reunion of the Oak Park and River Forest (OPRF) High School class of 1968. The Chicago-based Coleman Foundation also matched $10,000 worth of contributions.

“That was extraordinary for us,” said Richard Biggins, Empowering Gardens’ coowner, who is also an alum of OPRF class of 1986. “Usually this time of year we’re just cringing. Now we sleep better.”

Empowering Gardens, a nonprofit that employs and supports people with disabilities, runs an outdoor garden center at 7730 Madison St. in Forest Park during the summer; in the winter, the nonprofit generally operates anywhere landlord friends donate space. For the second winter in a row, Art Sundry, the owner of caffe DeLuca, is allowing Empowering Gardens to operate at 7415 Madison St. in a space he owns.

But after receiving such a generous dona-

tion, Biggins said the nonprofit will, for the first time, be able to save to buy the land at 7730 Madison St., the cost of which he estimates as only rising thanks to new development. In April 2018, the Forest Park Village Council approved a four-story, mixed-use development at 7652 Madison St., a site formerly occupied by the Irish taverns Brian Boru’s and Molly Malone’s. The Northbrook-based Madison Avenue Real Estate Group, which is managed by Chicago White Sox and Bulls owner Jerry Reinsdorf, will develop the space.

“There’s been a lot of development at that end of town, so we’re afraid that the cost of our ultimate goal of buying that property is going up as we sit. We’ve been pretty month-to-month since we began,” Biggins said. “We get very lucky and so far people have donated space for us, which is basically free. That’s very important, but a lot of what we’re doing is keeping warm and making plans. What we’re not doing is making very much money.”

Biggins estimated the cost of the land at 7730 Madison St. to be “several hundred thousand dollars.” Empowering Gardens

is currently in year four of its five-year lease, leaving the nonprofit about 23 months to save enough to buy the land. He said he wasn’t sure how much Empowering Gardens would be able to accumulate from donations — “at least $10,000,” he said — but it represents the first-time the group has been able to save a substantial amount for the land.

“We better figure out a plan to buy it or somebody else with a lot of money is going to come and end our dream, and we certainly don’t want that to happen,” said Ana Solares, co-owner.

In the spring, Biggins said business at the outdoor garden center does “very well,” increasing every year. But during the winter, he said, “It’s almost like holding on for the rest of the year.”

In early January, Empowering Gardens had a meeting with government officials about securing a grant to help buy the land — “Believe it or not, the greenhouse is probably going to cost a third of what the land to put it on is going to cost,” Biggins said. The nonprofit is planning a fundraiser dedicated to the cause of buying the land sometime in

Lightford named senate majority leader The state senator becomes first black woman in the role

A longtime African American lawmaker is making her own history just as Democrats are set to begin a historic era of dominance in Springfield. State Sen. Kimberly Lightford (D-4th) was recently named Senate Majority Leader, making her the first African American female to hold the position and among the highest-ranking elected officials in state governance.

Lightford said that her promotion in the Senate will allow her more leverage to keep fighting the fight she’s been waging since she was first elected more than 20 years ago — even though the job doesn’t generate many headlines.

For instance, she said, the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus was responsible for releasing more than $35 million in funds for summer youth employment, after school and supplemental programs even as the state’s coffers contracted under Rauner.

That money, Lightford said, translated into real opportunities for young people in hard-hit communities.

Despite her new position, Lightford said that she doesn’t necessarily feel that she’s reached her pinnacle.

“I don’t know that I’ve reached a pinnacle that would cause me to stop grinding for communities in need,” she said. “To be present at the table, where decisions are being made, is so important. It’s important that we make sure the voices of the vulnerable and the voices of those in diverse groups, in particular those in the African community, are heard.”

D209 board approves master facilities plan The board unanimously voted for plan on Jan. 8

During a regular meeting on Jan. 8, the Proviso Township High Schools District 209 Board of Education voted unanimously to accept the scope of work in the district’s master facilities plan.

The vote set in motion a series of events, such as the initiation of pre-design and design phases of construction and the selection of a construction manager to oversee the capital work, that will directly apply to the master plan’s initial phase — the first, and most extensive, of three phases.

The first phase could cost an estimated $77 million and includes work at all three schools that could take until 2022 to complete. Around $48 million of that total expenditure, or 62 percent, would go toward improvements at Proviso East while $24 million, or 31 percent, would go toward improvements at Proviso West, and $5 million, or 7 percent, would go toward improvements at Proviso Math and Science Academy (PMSA).

The work ranges from extensive electrical upgrades and stadium reconstruction at East to parking lot and traffic control improvements at PMSA. District 209 Supt. Jesse Rodriguez said that the district has nearly $60 million on hand to pay for the improvements, with the additional $17 million coming from three years of surplus budgets.

D209 waives gym for AP, IB students Students must receive approval by the superintendent

During a regular meeting on Jan. 8, the Proviso Township High Schools District 209 Board of Education unanimously approved a recommendation from D209 administrators to excuse some juniors and seniors from the state’s physical education requirement.

According to a notice released by D209 officials last week, those students will be exempt from the PE requirement “in order to take courses required for completion of an International Baccalaureate diploma or leading to early college credit, with prior approval from the superintendent.”

During the Jan. 8 meeting, D209 board member Della Patterson said that officials should clarify for members of the public that not all three schools offer full IB courses, yet. Proviso Math and Science Academy (PMSA) is the only school that offers full IB courses.

Nicole Howard, D209’s assistant superintendent for academics and student and family services, said that there has not been any “recent discussion” about implementing an IB Diploma Programme at Proviso East or West, although West officials are looking to turn in the necessary paperwork to land the International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme (IBCC) by 2021.

The IBCC program is more career-oriented than the IB Diploma Programme at PMSA, with the former program leading to a certificate.

“It appears as though there will be this big IB program for all three schools,” said Patterson. “If I were on the outside looking in, and didn’t know any better, that’s what I’d be thinking.”

Howard said that the IB-related waivers applicable only to students at PMSA, as well as the early college credit waivers applicable to students at all three schools who are taking AP and dual-credit courses, will be available next academic year.

D209 hires asst. superintendent of operations Michael Tanner holds an MBA from Northwestern

During a regular meeting on Jan. 8, the Proviso Township High Schools District 209 school board unanimously voted to approve an employment contract for Michael Tanner to become the district’s new assistant superintendent of finance and operations.

The board voted on the contract as part of a consent agenda that included a range of other action items.

Tanner’s performance-based contract runs from Jan. 7, 2019 through June 30, 2020. He’ll receive a salary of $164,000. The board will pay “the entire contribution” on

Tanner’s behalf “to the Teachers’ Retirement System (“TRS”) of the State of Illinois from” that salary, according to the contract.

Tanner’s responsibilities include serving on the district’s leadership team as its chief financial officer and school treasurer, officials stated in district documents.

Tanner will oversee the administration of the district’s budget process, provide financial plans for the district and work closely on construction projects in the district, among other functions.

Tanner comes to D209 from Fremont School District 79, where he served as associate superintendent for finance and operations.

He’s also been a financial administrator for Glencoe School District 35, Prairie Grove School District 46 and Mascoutah District 19. He’s been a contingency airlift director with the United States Air Force since 1997.

Tanner has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in natural resources management from Southern Illinois University and Michigan State University, respectively; and an MBA in finance and marketing from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management.

Tanner replaces Todd Drafall, D209’s former chief business officer who resigned last year.

Woman fires shots at vehicle near the Ike A Harwood Heights man told police a woman shot at his car near the intersection of Harlem and I-290 about 3:06 a.m. on Jan. 9.

The victim told police he was driving south on Harlem at Division in River Forest when a vehicle pulled in front of his BMW. The woman kept braking in front of him, forcing him to slam on the brakes multiple times.

The woman’s suspicious behavior caused the man to take a picture of her car. The man continued to drive south on Harlem, entered the right lane and attempted to pull onto the I-290 ramp when he heard two bullets strike his vehicle. The woman sped off.

Officers recovered two bullet casings.

Blue Line battery Police arrived at the Forest Park Blue Line station, 711 Desplaines Ave., around 4:50 p.m. on Jan. 8, on a call about a woman beaten near the south end of the tracks.

A Chicago woman, 28, told police that a man stepped on the back of her foot when she was walking down the stairs. She turned around and said “excuse me,” and the man began striking her with his fists, pulling her hair and dragging her in the terminal. He then ran out of the station.

The woman’s hair was disheveled and she had a broken nail that was bleeding. She refused medical attention.

CTA employee threatened Police arrived at the Forest Park Blue Line station, 711 Desplaines Ave., at 11:37 p.m. on Jan. 9, on a call that a Bartlett man was threatening a CTA employee. Officers could hear yelling when they arrived.

The employee told officers he approached the Bartlett man, and asked why he was attempting to bring a large stick on the train.

The man replied, “[expletive] Latinos,” and threatened to beat the employee with the stick.

Police placed the Bartlett man in custody and charged him with aggravated assault, criminal trespass to state-supported land and disorderly conduct.

Man attacked on CTA A Chicago man told police that two men attacked him at the Forest Park Blue Line station, 711 Desplaines Ave., about 7 p.m. on Jan. 6.

He told police he had attended church service at Living Word Christian Center earlier that day and was entering the CTA turnstile when he heard two men call out, “Hey, you owe me money.”

The man was pulled backward up the escalator, put in a headlock and struck in the face repeatedly. The men took his bus pass

and money and then fled.

The victim took the train to the Austin stop and called a friend to pick him up. He admitted himself to West Suburban Medical Center emergency room on Jan. 9 for treatment to his left eye, nose and head. Upon inspection, doctors found he suffered a fractured vertebrae in his neck. He was transported to Stroger Hospital where surgery was scheduled for Jan. 11.

Man batters pregnant woman Police arrived at an apartment on the 7400 block of Randolph at 3:46 a.m. on Jan. 12, on a call that a Forest Park man was shaking and hitting a pregnant woman from Berwyn.

The victim told police she was driving herself, the father of her unborn child, and the Forest Park man home from a night out when the latter started drinking in the car.

She asked him to stop and the man became very angry, slapping her in the face and stomach and punching her shoulders.

The victim ran from the vehicle to protect her unborn child and the man ran after her.

He grabbed her arm, causing her jacket to rip, and started to aggressively shake her.

Police transported the alleged attacker to the station, where he started crying and screaming obscenities at officers and bang-

A man claiming to be a 90-year-old woman’s grandson called her on Jan. 9, claiming that he was arrested for DUI and needed bond money. He asked the Forest Park woman how much she had and she replied, “A couple hundred dollars.” The phone disconnected.

The woman received another call two days later, from a man claiming to be a case worker who needed $8,500 to free her grandson from jail. A friend drove her to Forest Park National Bank to get a cashier’s check. Bank tellers told her she was likely the victim of a scam. She decided to send the cashier’s check anyway.

On Jan. 12, she woke about 1 a.m. with a “bad feeling” about the transaction. She called family members and realized she was the victim of fraud.

The U.S. Postal Service was able to intercept the check.

These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Forest Park Police Department, Jan. 8-14, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded.

Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

Healthy advice for the New Year

Forest Park’s fitness experts weigh in

Year after year, Americans’ most common New Years resolutions are exercise, healthy eating and weight loss. The new year promises new beginnings, following a holiday period of boozy parties and heavy food.

Unfortunately, research shows that less than 10 percent of people who set New Year’s resolutions actually stick to them.

This question that begs to be answered is how does one become part of the 10 percent?

The Forest Park Review sat down with local fitness-club owners to ask what it takes to get healthy and stay healthy in 2019.

Regan Hoerster, Village Pilates Regan Hoerster likes the spirit of a fresh start. However, she hopes to help people see health from a holistic perspective. “I want my clients to approach that desire to change and get better in a healthy, sustainable way,” she said.

According to Hoerster, the studio focuses on mental health and diet, offering a 30-day clean eating program twice per year, which emphasizes mindfulness and taking care of the self instead of restriction.

“Exercise can’t fix a bad diet,” she said.

“When you eat foods that fuel you, you are not going to have inflammation or weight gain.”

Mindfulness, Hoerster points out, is a major resolution for many. It can be developed with Pilates, which is a type of moving meditation.

Hoerster tries to harness the initial motivation: “The energy of the new year has people coming to the higher-intensity classes. People are bolder and wanting to try new things.”

However, Hoerster warns against placing too much pressure on the new year as the time to start over.

“Give yourself the grace all the time to start again,” she tells them. “That is what gives people resilience: always being able to start again at any time.”

Hoerster has one piece of advice: “Just do it. Make the phone call, schedule the appointment, don’t delay.” She believes there is a pervasive, incorrect myth that fit people are motivated all the time. Rather, fit people exercise even when they aren’t motivated; they just show up.

“You can’t wait to be motivated.”

She recommends signing up for classes in a studio, which provides community and accountability.

Unbreakable Fitness held a holiday fitness challenge from Dec. 15 to Jan. 15, where participants received points for making healthy lifestyle choices, such as shutting off electronics in the evening, cooking at home, and getting enough sleep. Hayley trains his clients to create a healthy lifestyle, noting, “What they’re doing outside of the gym is what matters. They’re only here for an hour.”

He does not recommend “weight-loss” challenges. “It encourages people not to eat, and people feel discouraged when they have to remove things.”

His fitness philosophy revolves around adding quality. “When you add quality, you eventually feel better, and those behaviors become habit,” he explains. Many of his challenge participants lost weight without weight loss being the central goal.

Like Hoerster, Hayley finds what you eat to be as important as how you exercise, emphasizing the importance of paying attention to food.

“It is a more powerful exercise than any workout.”

Another trend is burnout. He incorporates “rest days” into his programs to communicate the importance of recovery in a sustainable exercise routine. The workouts at Unbreakable Fitness vary in intensity depending on the day and class, and offerings include strength training, cardio-conditioning, flexibility and nutrition coaching.

Unlike most gyms, which accept drop-ins at any time, Hayley operates on a 12-week membership model with a progressive program that increases intensity each week.

Hayley’s biggest piece of advice for anyone starting a fitness program is to focus on what you can do: “Don’t let what you can’t do get in the way of what you can do. Just choose exercise that is most important for you.”

John Tutaj, Tutaj Brazilian Jiu Jitsu John Tutaj doesn’t pay much attention to New Year’s resolutions.

“A lot of people who make New Year’s resolutions don’t stick with them,” he said, explaining that Jiu Jitsu requires more than a short spurt of motivation.

“Jiu Jitsu is tough. People who are looking for Jiu Jitsu find it.”

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a form of martial arts for people who are unafraid of close contact. “You submit to your opponent using locks.” Jiu Jitsu requires little equipment, and is practiced barefoot on thick mats. Beginners can wear a gi, the cotton uniform usually associated with martial arts.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has been made popular on a national level due to its connection to MMA fighters such as Rhonda Rousey (Mixed Martial Arts). However, while the sports are similar, they are not the same.

“In MMA there is a lot of punching. Not in Jiu Jitsu. The lack of striking keeps it safe,” explains Tutaj.

The workout generally consists of a 15 minute warm-up, followed by 45 minutes of technique and situational sparring, all of which work up a heavy sweat. Tutaj also offers self-defense classes on Saturday.

Like Hoerster and Hayley, he places heavy emphasis on eating a healthy diet, believing in the importance of investing the extra time necessary for nutrition. His advice is simple: “Cook your own food.” If it comes in a box and is packaged with preservatives, he doesn’t eat it.

Tutaj believes there is a connection between the high incidence of diabetes today and the modern diet.

“You need to dedicate adequate time to your health. It’s not always easy to take care of yourself, but you are either going to pay now or later.”

Hannah Avenue fire still under investigation A fire occurred about 1:30 p.m. in a threestory apartment building at 1141 Hannah Ave. on Jan. 10.

Forest Park Fire Chief Bob McDermott said the cause of the fire is still under investigation and was contained to the three rear apartments, which were “heavily damaged by smoke, fire and water.” The fire appeared to start in the basement, according to a police report. McDermott said firefighters had to cut the building’s utilities, gas, electric and water. Eleven fire departments showed up to extinguish the flames.

“I don’t know when the families will be able to return,” he said in an email.

All of the approximately 20 tenants of the 12-unit building were evacuated safely, and many were transported to the Howard Mohr Community Center to keep warm.

Emergency personnel provided those who remained outside the building with hot chocolate, cookies, and jackets.

Building manager Pali Melani said he was outside the building when he saw smoke coming from the first floor. He went inside and saw a “small fire” in the firstfloor stairwell. Melani used a fire extinguisher to douse the flames but “all of a sudden it caught fire again,” he said.

He said he has no idea what caused the fire.

Neither does building owner John Serritella.

“As quick as we can safely get everyone back in, we will,” Serritella said.

The Red Cross arrived about 2 p.m. to begin connecting tenants with temporary housing.

His thoughts turned to his father, Richard, who received a right lung transplant in 2010, after years of smoking, ammonia inhalation and inhaling “a lot” of smoke fighting Forest Park fires, Gray said.

Richard Gray Sr. served as a lieutenant of the Forest Park Fire Department for about two decades.

“There used to be a meat packing plant on Brown Avenue that caught on fire a couple of times and set off an ammonia leak. He took a little too much in and went into the hospital a few times,” Gray said. “Just to even get on the donors list was incredible.”

Gray Sr. realized he needed a lung transplant in early 2010, after seemingly endless tests and receiving approval from a group of pulmonologists to be placed on a donor list.

Gray said doctors thought they found a match in June 2010. His father arrived at Loyola University Medical Center, where he spent two hours being prepped for the surgery.

But “bad storms” delayed the lung’s arrival to the hospital and, by the time the organ arrived, doctors realized it wasn’t a perfect match.

Two months later, at about 2 a.m., Richard Sr. received another call from doctors. He rushed to the Loyola’s ICU, got prepped for the surgery and received a transplant.

She said she inhaled “a ton” of smoke and that firefighters wanted to transport her to the hospital but, “I don’t have time for that right now,” she said. Ellison was evacuated safely in her pajamas.

“I’m traumatized,” she said. “To wake up to something like that was terrible. I’m still in shock.”

Eight years later, Richard has suffered a few “minor setbacks” but is doing well, Gray said.

While at the hospital, the Grays made friends with the Patels, another family waiting for their father to receive a left lung transplant. After each underwent successful surgery, the families kept in touch, occasionally each other emailing updates and jokingly referring to the patriarchs as “Righty” and “Lefty.” One year, Gray dedicated his climb to “Lefty.”

“Each year, I’ll dedicate my climb to somebody, whether it’s a family member who’s passed from lung disease, somebody who’s currently afflicted by it, or a friend of the family, like Lefty,” he said.

This year, he will recognize “the love of my life,” his wife Renee, whose mother, aunt and cousin have all died of lung cancer. Thanks to a low dosage CT screening, doctors caught three “very, very small” benign nodules on Renee’s lung this summer.

D91 social workers raise funds for displaced family District 91 schools are collecting clothing, gift cards and monetary donations to help a family displaced following a fire at a three-story apartment building on Jan. 10. The fire occurred about 1:30 p.m. at 1141 Hannah Ave. in the rear three units of the building, which were “heavily damaged,” according to Fire Chief Bob McDermott.

“We will be conducting an ongoing collection for as long as people are willing to donate,” Tiffany Brunson, principal of Field-Stevenson Intermediate Elementary School, said via email. A family enrolled at Field-Stevenson “lost everything” from the fire and is currently being housed by the Red Cross at a hotel in the area.

Field-Stevenson social workers are collecting clothing for a fourth-grade girl, who is a size 8 or 9; a seventh-grade girl, who is a size medium for shirts and size 28 for pants; father, who is a 42-44 pants size and 4X or 5X shirt; and mother, who is a size 38 in pants and extra-large or 1X for shirts. All donations can be dropped off at the front office of Field-Stevenson during school hours. The South Parent Teach Organization is also helping raise awareness and connecting the family with local businesses.

“We have a wonderfully generous community, and the family is very grateful for the support,” Brunson wrote in an email.

“Obviously she was very upset, so I’m basically doing this for her this year,” he said.

Doctors will now monitor the nodules.

“It really hits home, which is why I started doing these climbs for my dad,” Gray said. “I want to help others.”

Growing up in the 900 block of Beloit Avenue, Gray said he looked up to his father, eventually following in his footsteps and becoming a firefighter in 1990. He said his father’s health struggles have left him undeterred about his career choice.

“The equipment we have today is far and beyond a lot of what that they have back in his time,” Gray said. “Back then it wasn’t really mandated to wear air packs into a fire. Back then, the tanks were a lot heavier, made of steel and didn’t have a lot of air in it.”

Gray said he starts training for the climb in September, by trekking up the stairs of the firehouse’s hose tower in his gym clothes and riding a stationary bike. By December, he starts training in his 60-pound air pack, and climbing up the firehouse’s staircase 16 times about three times a week, double the amount required to climb the 31 flights at Oakbrook Terrace Tower.

“You learn little tricks as you go along each time you do it,” Gray said.

He’s learned, for example, to keep his coat open, so he doesn’t overheat while climbing the steps. Gray keeps cough drops in his mouth so his throat doesn’t get too dry. He tries to pace himself, resisting the temptation to sprint the first 10 flights of stairs.

“Take it slow; it’s a marathon, not a sprint,” Gray said.

“Unless you’re in the best shape of your life, climbing 31 flights of stairs in five minutes is a lot harder than it looks.”

“We think everybody on Madison Street here in Forest Park will be selling this by the end of this year,” said Brian Shamhart, who runs Studio 8 with Kratz. “At least, a lot more than currently do. But there’s this lack of knowledge, and that’s why we investigate it pretty heavily.”

CBD oil is derived from hemp, a non-psychoactive variety of cannabis that has had a rocky legal history in the United States.

Hemp has been used as a natural herbal medicine for thousands of years. But in 1937, Congress lumped it into the same category as marijuana and voted to outlaw it under the Marijuana Tax Act, amid strong immigrant anti-sentiment and against the advice of doctors and engineers.

About 60 years BRIAN SHAMHART later, the U.S. Co-owner began to import hemp and hemp oil for sale to consumers.

In 2014, President Barack Obama legalized hemp’s growth in certain states. In late December, President Donald Trump expanded the measure, classifying hemp as an “agricultural product” available to be grown and sold across the nation. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) still classifies CBD as illegal, although it doesn’t go after anyone using or possessing it, and it hasn’t said if it will reclassify CBD now that hemp is legal.

Kratz and Shamhart believe CBD products will only increase in popularity.

“I’m a business owner and I have kids and I’m always anxious about trying to keep up with everything and being the best I could be,” Kratz said. “Sometimes you just got to let it go.” She tried CBD oil on Amazon that came highly reviewed but said it did nothing for her. She tried some from Sugar Beet

Kratz then did her research, consulted a physician about the best CBD oil and tried products from CBD Distillery. After a month of regular intake — using a dropper once daily to place the oil underneath her tongue for about a minute to absorb — Kratz realized she hadn’t had a migraine recently. She had suffered about three migraines weekly, triggered by barometric pressure changes, hormones and maybe food; she’s now averaging five monthly.

“It’s not completely gone but they’re so much more manageable today,” she said.

“I’m off all my medications. It’s truly given me a whole new lease on life so then I was adamant about us selling it.”

Studio 8 introduced CBD oil, lotion and gummies in the fall, and has done little to advertise the product. Still, customers have

discovered it. One customer said it helped treat her multiple sclerosis. Another customer said it eased their plantar fasciitis.

Another said it helped cure their insomnia.

But the seniors do know about it. They’re the ones who are most interested because they have the ailments that it will help.”

When selecting a CBD oil, Shamhart said, consumers should look into the extraction process and quality of the raw material that’s farmed, advising customers to stick to hemp grown in the U.S. and make their own decision about whether they value organic growing methods.

“It’s kind of like, ‘What’s your raw material starting with? How good is that plant and how’s it been cultivated and farmed?’”

Shamhart said.

Studio 8 is toying with the idea of adding new lines to their store — currently they only carry CBD Distillery brand oil, lotion and gummies, which Kratz uses herself – and are “considering” opening a CBD and Kratom store in Forest Park. Kratom is a plant native to southeast Asia that has effects similar to opioids and stimulants.

“We just made a small order and then we were ordering every 2-3 weeks and trying to keep up,” Kratz said. “So we’re just playing with the idea of adding a couple different lines just to give us some variety and some alternatives. But again, I don’t want to do anything that I can’t personally say I believe in.”

One Forest Park I am Chris Harris and I’d like to introduce myself and tell you why I’m running for Mayor, there are a few reasons. I hope you will take a minute to read this.

I love Forest Park and as a former council member I thoroughly enjoyed being part of the group trusted to lead us into the future. My time on the council saw great forward thinking projects; from the start of the Roosevelt Road beautification to the first public town hall on the Altenheim open space. I was very proud to shine a light on the need for long term planning at the Altenheim and it has been wonderful to see citizens move exciting ideas forward.

I also know the struggles of balancing the budget and the tight financial wire we, as a village, have to walk. As commissioner, my department cut our department’s budget every year without affecting core services. As a resident I see the struggles of parking issues, increased crime, higher taxes and the ever present need to increase the quality of our schools. These are all high priorities to me, and I have been pleased to see advancements at district 209 – the board needs to continue to move forward with maximum support and minimal political interference.

Issues aside, I am running because I feel we really need to heal the divide that has happened over video gaming. A resident pointed out that even using the word ‘sides’

when it came to the debate was divisive, and she was correct. Is the village strapped for revenue? It sure is and all revenue helps, moral debate aside. Do citizens have their right to be heard via referendums? They certainly do, and were heard in November.

The bottom line is, that is now settled law and moving forward we need to support the businesses in town and respect the citizen’s voice. Having friends with differing opinions on this matter I hope I can help heal that still open wound.

In the coming months I hope to make the case on why a vote for me is a vote you’ll be proud to cast. I plan to talk about the issues, and the policy differences I have with my opponent, in a civil and collegial manner. We are all one Forest Park and I hope that together we can move this town forward.

W

ith the headlines focused on the full-bore ascendency of Democrats in Illinois, attention rightly turns to new Governor J.B. Pritzker and the swearing-in Monday of an all-Democratic roster of state constitutional officers.

Our headline though is on the deserved recognition of two veteran local Democratic state senators — Kimberly Lightford and Don Harmon — who have risen to the heights of influence within the senate.

Winning a dramatic and earned promotion is Lightford.

The Maywood native represents all of Forest Park and River Forest, a portion of Oak Park and much of Proviso Township. She has now been appointed Senate Majority Leader, the number two post in the senate. She replaces the legendary Barbara Flynn Currie who has now retired.

Certainly, it is notable that Lightford becomes the first black woman to hold this post. She is also president of the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus, another post of considerable influence.

Beyond that, though, is Lightford’s considerable political and policy chops. She earned this post because she is a legislator with clear policy priorities that focus directly on unmet needs in her communities. She is savvy and persistent enough to make those priorities real on the ground.

We look particularly at Lightford’s public education focus and the statewide impact of her legislation that forced high school districts to radically change direction on suspensions and expulsions of students. This is a restorative justice approach that makes such sense and goes straight to the inequities in how schools have dispensed discipline along racial lines.

Oak Park-based Sen. Don Harmon’s role as head of the Senate Executive Committee continues and carries considerable substance in driving the progressive agenda for Illinois. For Harmon’s part we look to his determined efforts to move gun safety legislation through to the incoming governor’s desk af after years of hard work and to the necessary shift to a progressive state income tax, Harmon’s Fair Tax, about to become the next essential discussion in fixing the state’s broken finances.

Our communities have offered up to the state two legislators with progressive values, deep knowledge and political skills to make genuine change happen.

Investing in D209

When a school district stops investing in its school buildings, it is a clear sign that something has gone very wrong.

The district is broke. The district saw benefits in diverting money to political ends. The district had no vision of its future and did not see the percentages in anything beyond patching the roof when it leaked.

That would be a fair description of the sorry state our Proviso Township High Schools had fallen to over past decades. But new administrative and school board leadership over four years in District 209 have turned that grim scenario fully around.

As 2019 began, the school board unanimously approved spending $77 million on fundamental physical investments in its three school buildings — East, West and PMSA. That will take three years to spend, on everything from new electrical systems, upgraded athletic facilities and updated parking.

Most of that money is on hand, the result of astute financial management that goes back to the state’s financial takeover of this district.

Better days ahead.

OPINION Don’t victimize and don’t be a victim

T

ook a trip to the Illinois Holocaust Museum with the Boy Scouts on Sunday. In a theater we watched a 3D hologram of a man, Aaron Elster, who told his story of being 11 years old, the same age as my youngest, who hid from the Gestapo in the attic of a Christian Polish family for two years. He went without bathing, he was alone, hungry and silent, only being able to cry out when the rain hit the roof and muffled the sound. His experience of hiding in a family friend’s uninsulated, liceinfested rooftop with no plumbing, hot or cold, alone and hungry, was one he never talked about until he was an older adult in America. He made a point of stating that he never wanted to be seen as a victim because there are two ways people see victims. Either it makes people feel sorry for them or it divides people.

I sometimes read the comments from neighbors and friends in Forest Park on social media. I revel in those voices that are strong and are responsible.

A small trend of comments, however, categorizes people into “types of Forest Parkers.” They are insightful, I suppose, but I’ve noticed that in these groupings, my family and I do not belong to any of the sides. I wasn’t born here, I don’t know any Oak Parkers or River Foresters who look down on people from Forest Park, and I treasure the community of friends I have gained from sharing for the past 11 years within our community public schools.

Forest Park has been dealt a hand, and whether we like it or not, we face the hand that was dealt to us, together, and if we can find a place to trust one another, we might find it’s a pretty good hand after all.

In the next few months we will have an opportunity to meet and engage with people whose desire it is to serve our community in an elected position. I will be looking for those leaders who do not see themselves as a victim. This is a very tiresome and toxic form of leadership.

Aaron Elster, in his holographic talk, also mentioned that holding hate only hurts the hater. He said he has forgiven much hurt in his life — the loss of his parents, his older sibling, his home, his extended fam-

ily — but he admitted he still had not forgiven the people who took the life of his 6-year-old sister. That choking pain was a burden he carried with him and, even 80 years later, he could not let go of it.

Two weeks ago, there was a social media post, in poor taste, about the #MeToo Movement by our mayor. I do not believe he intended to make a hurtful statement.

But his gaffe was subject to the wild west showdowns of social media, and a citizen replied by calling the mayor a name, and threatening to contact this newspaper.

The Forest Park Review did an interview and the mayor shared that his words were taken out of context.

But seeing it on the front page, somehow, crossed a line for me. This tiny spark that ignited a full social media storm, one that few social media sheriffs could manage, now was in the paper, and even more dangerously, created an opportunity for our mayor to feel like the victim, if he chooses. The repugnance of social comments staking a claim, once left to the battle grounds of late-night discussions, often unread until the dawn of a new day, now were now considered newsworthy.

I realize that everyone has a voice on social media. I also realize that once every three weeks, I have a voice in the Forest Park Review, and this time I am devoting my words to both the Forest Park Review and to its readers.

Intentions matter. I do not want to be in a town where people feel powerless, like victims do.

Actions speak louder than words. I ask each of my neighbors and community members to confront the parts of town that make you bitter or angry, first by recognizing that you are holding onto a hurt and you have the ability to create a new outcome. Show up at the public meeting. Attend things. Show your face, not just the avatar from your living room. There are far more people good, decent people who live here than those who would take out their personal bitterness on others or take political advantage of a distressed community. Sometimes good, decent people remain silent in the face of hate and social bias which renders the good and decent … powerless.

Don’t be a powerless victim. Be a powerful citizen.

Progressive discipline

T

here was a superintendent of the Proviso Township High Schools, and there have been a good many of them over recent years, who confided to a local newspaper that all would be well in these failed public high schools if only 300 students could be permanently expelled.

You bet, we were told, it would be a dandy public high school if only 10 percent of the student body were turned out onto the street, left to their own devices. We mentioned it would be something less than a public school if administrators got to cherry pick who could attend. The superintendent agreed, acknowledging it was a fantasy.

But judging by the way discipline was dished out at Proviso East in the following years it was more reality than fantasy. The district did not permanently expel endless numbers of students but in the 2016 school year it did pass out 648 suspensions. Some of those were in-school suspensions, some out-of-school suspensions. Any way you parse those numbers, it reflected full failure in this district.

Now things have changed markedly and for the better.

In the school year that ended in the spring, just 249 suspensions were issued at East. That is a 62 percent decline.

It doesn’t mean there wasn’t bad behavior. It doesn’t mean there weren’t consequences. It does mean the entire approach to teaching our young people how to behave shifted from purely punitive to what has come to be called, a little grandly, restorative justice. Mainly it means creating new mechanisms, from teacher training to adding “interventionists,” which bring students who are acting out to account for those actions — mainly disruption, profanity, verbal fights. This process brings two students shouting down the hallway directly into a process of talking it through, of peer counseling.

Tossing students who are not succeeding out on the street did not ever result in a better outcome. Created more isolation and less accountability.

Who do we have to thank for this? Well, not surprisingly, Kimberly Lightford, our local state senator, drove statewide change on school suspensions. She forced every school district in the state to radically shift its discipline model.

And at Proviso high schools the statewide change synced up with a new school board and administration that saw the damage its archaic discipline system was creating.

The village treasurer

Who knew? Forest Park has a village treasurer.

And now, following the recent death of the beloved Andy Collis, it has a new village treasurer. Turns out Collis, who everyone thought the world of, has been the treasurer of our small burg for decades. He collected a very modest stipend and we suppose he signed some papers now and again.

Now Forest Park has a new village treasurer, duly appointed by the village council on Aug. 27. Her name is Georgia Rombakis Tsaganos. Most people paying attention to social media will know her simply as Gia Rombakis. A teacher the past several years, Rombakis Tsaganos will also, we’re confident, be an able signer of papers.

We remain uncertain why Forest Park has a village treasurer, why it’s not the village’s finance director or the village clerk. Life is full of mysteries.

The flag belongs in our hearts

harissa Hawkins hadn’t warned Pastor Walter Mitty that she was going to drop a bombshell at last night’s Poplar Park Community Church council meeting.

“I move,” she said when it came time for new business, “that we remove the American flag from alongside the altar and put it hall.” social the in A loud silence hung like an ominous cloud over the meeting, like everyone was just waiting for thunder and lightning to strike at any moment.

Gerhardt Aschenbrenner reacted by fingering the American flag pin in his sport coat lapel, closing his eyes, bowing his head and thinking, “Here we go again.

First it was the environment. Then Black Lives Matter. Then it was separating children from their refugee parents.”

Sharissa pulled Asch out of his emotional retreat by saying, “Asch, I know what you’re thinking. This is not about football players kneeling during the national anthem.”

The social worker couldn’t repress a smile as she watched the man sitting across the table startled into awareness of the group.

“What’s going on,” she continued, “is that I’ve been thinking about that hymn we sang last week.”

“You mean um …” Eric Anderson paused to search his memory, “that one that begins with ‘This is my song O God of all the nations’?”

The social worker smiled at the man who looked like he walked straight out of an Eddie Bauer catalogue.

“That’s the one,” she said. “And what really hit me were those lines that went ‘here’ — meaning America — ‘are my hopes, my dreams, my holy shrine. But other hearts in other lands are beating with hopes and dreams as true and high as mine.’”

Asch was shaking his head as he asked, “So are you putting our country down again, Sharissa?”

“C’mon Asch, you know better than most people that I love this country and that’s why I work for low wages as a social worker on the South Side. I work to …” she said, pausing to find the words to finish her sentence, “to enlarge the tent, to make it big enough so everyone in this country can be blessed.”

Another pause. Most of the people sitting around the table were afraid of open conflict and had retreated into their emotional shells.

Pastor Mitty finally decided to say something.

“Sharissa, are you saying the flag should not be respected, that it stands for something you are not proud of ?”

“No, Pastor,” Sharissa replied. “I understand how people can interpret what I’m saying that way, but that’s not what I mean.

Let me put it this way. Jesus was not an American, right?”

The council members, even Asch, slowly, one by one, nodded their heads in agreement.

“OK, so what I’m saying is that this whole kneeling during the national anthem has become a fashionable bandwagon for some folks to jump on, and for other people it’s a sign that those kneeling don’t love America.

“I don’t want to wave that red flag. What I’m saying is that the American flag is a symbol. A symbol of this country. And the cross is a symbol for us Christians of the love of God. Jesus commanded us to love God with all our heart, mind, soul and strength.”

She paused again to let that sink in, knowing that the council was now at least partly with her.

“And Jesus added that we should love everyone and everything else — not with our whole heart — but ‘as ourselves’. I’m not asking us to burn the flag or disrespect it. I’m just asking us to take it away from next to the altar and put it another prominent place, in the social hall … to kind of symbolically say that we know who is God and what or who is not.”

To everyone’s surprise, and relief, Asch responded with a quiet, almost affectionate tone, saying, “I think I get what you are saying, Sharissa, and it doesn’t bother me as much as it did a few minutes ago. You know I don’t agree with you and that I will vote ‘no’ when it comes to a vote. But the reason I’m not angry now is that I heard you acknowledging that you respected how I feel about the flag, partly by offering to move to the social hall instead of getting rid of it altogether.”
