Message from the Chamber

We are pleased to present the latest Forest Park Community Guide. Published annually by the Forest Park Review in partnership with the Forest Park Chamber of Commerce, this guide contains a wealth of information on just about everything you need to know about Forest Park.

Located just ten miles west of downtown Chicago, Forest Park is a vibrant, active, diverse community with an urban vibe, small-town charm and a rich history. The cooperative spirit and civic pride shared between residents, business owners and local government gives Forest Park a genuine, time-honored sense of community.

Madison Street ’s mix of independently owned shops, eateries and service businesses offer something for everyone. From boutiques, antiques and handmade gifts to cooking classes, spa services, an escape room and more…you’ll find just about anything you need in downtown Forest Park. Local eateries throughout town offer a variety of dining options to please every palate. Enjoy authentic Italian or Mexican fare, wood-fired pizzas and the best French onion soup in the area, or grab breakfast or a burger from an old-fashioned diner. Satisfy your sweet tooth with cookies with a twist and handcrafted ice cream made in house.

There’s an artist on nearly every corner, and the Forest Park Arts Alliance brings people together through the joy of art. Maker ’s Markets, Garage Galleries, Tellers’ Nights, stoop sessions and more are just some of the art experiences waiting for you in Forest Park.

Unique events, recreational opportunities and a generous choice of housing options make Forest Park

a great place to live, work, shop, dine and play. The Aquatic Center is top notch, and the park district along with the local library and community center, have programs, classes and events for young and old alike. Community events like the ‘best in the west’ St. Patrick’s Day Parade, the Holiday Walk, Rib Fest and Wine Walk & Shop provide fun for all ages.

An abundance of history will interest even the most serious history buff. Join The Haymarket Martyrs’ Monument and Radical Row Tour, or a check out some of the historically significant gravesites through a virtual cemetery tour. Don’t forget to visit the 16” Softball Hall of Fame Museum.

Accessibility and multiple transportation options make Forest Park the perfect destination for a day, a weekend or a lifetime.

The Forest Park Chamber of Commerce & Development is a diverse and collaborative membership working together to make Forest Park the best place for all people and all businesses to thrive.

Forest Park Arts Alliance Celebrates the Arts

All Over Town

The Forest Park Arts Alliance was founded in 2017 with an inaugural project of painting the rusty Circle Avenue bridge to create a corridor filled with original artwork through the heart of Forest Park. Since then, the 501(c)(3) organization has brought together artists, resources and the community to enrich lives through the power of art.

Over the past five years, FPAA has worked to bring visual, music and performing arts to the near west suburbs. FPAA hosts the Strike a Pose photo booth during the village’s holiday walk, and invites the community out enjoy live music at five summer Stoop Sessions.

The FPAA is proud to bring the arts to Forest Park and give residents a pride of place while stimulating local business and bringing in tourists. On the forefront is their mission to build a strong arts community by connecting artists with opportunities, resources, and exposure.

FPAA’s Garage Galleries draw artists and patrons from near and far to enjoy homegrown art in Forest Park. Tellers’ Nights offer experienced storytellers sharing their personal stories. In the works are semi-annual Makers’ Markets and a 48-hour Film Festival, and a Gala in May.

Throughout all of these events and others, FPAA works with community partners, including the Park District and Library Along with the Forest Park Historical Society, they bring an invasion of scarecrows to town in October They create the trophies for the annual Casket Race. Local State Farm agent Mark Hanson sponsors musicians preforming at Stoop Sessions, and Katherine Valleau hosts Tellers’

Contributing Reporter Fiona Roach

Students in District 91 and kids throughout various Forest Park community spaces can cash in good deeds for special incentives with the Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports Program.

PBIS, which began in the 2010-2011 school year, is an initiative that uses positive reinforcement to improve student behavior and school climate. The program varies between participating organizations but mainly consists of students receiving tickets for positive behavior that they can trade for prizes.

“It ’s a framework that supports student behavior, looking at improving their outcomes and using data,” said David Mekhiel, director of student services at District 91. “Some main goals are decreasing disciplinary infractions, antisocial behavior and aggressive behavior.”

According to Mekhiel, each school has a PBIS committee that meets monthly to discuss what is working and not working with the program. PBIS is part of a larger MultiTiered System of Support, aimed to provide academic and behavioral support strategies in schools.

Positive Behavior Intervention and Suppor ts Pr ogram Community Pr ofi

The Forest Park Public Library also participates in PBIS, offering prizes like gift cards and free books to kids who demonstrate respectful and responsible behavior

“For our space, it was a really amazing thing,” said Susan Farnum, the library’s representative on the community PBIS leadership team. “It reframed the adults’ behavior and the adults’ philosophies on things. It really helps us remember how important it is to meet the kids where they are and set them up for success.”

Farnum said she attended a PBIS training in order to learn about the program, knowledge which she then brought back to the library. Each new hire also undergoes a PBIS training when they come on board.

“It reminded me that adults sometimes need retraining about how they’re interacting with kids, and that it ’s really important to be like looking out for the positive behaviors you see and not be so focused on catching people out,” Farnum said.

Since the Covid-19 pandemic, PBIS has been less active in the library because their traffic has been different. But, the program has had lasting effects on other library practices.

“It really started putting us on a more restorative justice approach,” Farnum said. “That was why we started the community service option for kids who had gotten suspensions at the library, which I think was a really big step in the right direction.”

According to her, the library wants everyone to feel welcome in their space, and PBIS has helped create the culture to do so

Mekhiel, who recently joined District 91, said he is hopeful for the future of PBIS and the potential impact it can have.

“As a new District administrator coming into the district, you always want to build upon anything that you can to support students,” Mekhiel said. “I’m very excited to see how high we can go.”

‘Continuity and change’: Kiwanis Club celebr a tes 100th anniversary

Contributing Reporter Fiona Roach

The Forest Park Kiwanis club celebrated its 100th anniversary Jan. 25, marking a century of service work for children in the Forest Park community.

The club, which is a chapter of a larger global organization of volunteers, is dedicated to improving the community “one child at a time.” It helps sponsor multiple local organizations, including the Park District of Forest Park, the Community Center Food Pantry, Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts.

“Kiwanis International has their mission, which is more of a global scale, but our local Forest Park Kiwanis is everything for the kids,” Kiwanis President Kristen Lyons said. “Any type of organization that is trying to do things for the youth of the village of Forest Park, the Kiwanis Club will help and sponsor wholeheartedly.”

Throughout the past 100 years, Kiwanis has hosted community activities, such as YMCA camps and soapbox derbies, as well as organizing larger global initiatives to combat iodine deficiencies and maternal and neonatal tetanus. It also frequently donates to the community center for Thanksgiving meals and Christmas toy

All ages and all ability levels are served in these therapeutic recreational activities. Many programs are similar to traditional park district classes, such as the association’s swim lessons, fitness classes and day camp At these programs,a recreation specialist will adjust how skills are taught, how much personal assistance will be given and ifany equipment accommodation is needed.Behavior management plans and other tools are used. Some programs require one-on-one staffing for a participant to be successful.Others are designed so that the competition is at a fair level,as in Special Olympics.
