Detective Lieutenant Daniel Pater of the Forest Park Police Department will be the next police chief, succeeding Ken Gross after he retires at the end of September.

Forest Park Mayor Rory Hoskins announced the Police Chief Designate would be Pater, who’s worked for the Forest Park Police Department for 20 years, in an Aug. 24 press release.

“Village leadership is confident in Pater’s ability to lead the department. He has demonstrated his commitment to policing practices that focus on transparency, training, education and safety,” Hoskins said in the release. “The village thanks Chief Gross for his service and leadership and looks forward to a smooth transition as Pater prepares to assume leadership of the Forest Park Police Department.”

Proposed O’Hare Flyer train already drawing opposition from River Forest

CEO says two-block section of track would be elevated and wouldn’t interfere with neighborhood

A proposed express train that would connect downtown Chicago with O’Hare International Airport and pass through River Forest is drawing scrutiny from village officials.

The privately funded O’Hare Flyer would be a “whisper-quiet, battery-electric train,” according to O’Hare Flyer LLC co-founder and CEO David Lundy, that would make its way through River Forest at 80 mph every 15 minutes from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. The total travel time from downtown Chicago to the airport would be 15 minutes.

Prior to River Forest, the train would travel along Interstate 290, within the socalled “Eisenhower Ditch,” then over the expressway moving north on a curve parallel with Van Buren Street between Forest Avenue and Park Avenue.

Once in River Forest, it would continue north between Forest and Park avenues over Chicago Avenue, Iowa Street, Augusta Street and Thatcher Avenue before proceeding to O’Hare through Thatcher Woods.

“Most of the tracks that go from Forest Park to River Forest and then beyond are elevated,” he said. “They only go to ground at Iowa Street, and so we’re going to take that section where you have functionally two blocks, it’s two blocks with four grade crossings, and we’re going to elevate this so you’ll have underpasses.

“We’re not going to interfere in any way with the ingress and egress into the neighborhood. You’re just taking the tracks and removing them from the ground level and putting them 15 feet in the air and you’re doing that with sound insulation around them.”

Still, in a village communication Aug. 26, president Cathy Adduci was unambiguous about the village’s opposition to the project.

“I want to assure you, the village has already reached out to our state legislators and those proposing it, and expressed vehement opposition to it, since it would be on a train line that runs entirely through our village,” Adduci said.

Adduci said Friday that there are many unanswered questions, which is why the village has reached out to Illinois Senate President Don Harmon, Senate Majority Leader Kimberly Lightford and represen-

tatives Emanual “Chris” Welch and Camille Lilly to deliver the message that the O’Hare Flyer “has to benefit all of us.”

In a prepared statement to the Wednesday Journal, Harmon said, “While I appreciate the significant positive impact this project could have on Chicagoland, I’d like to hear from my neighbors who will be most directly impacted.”

Lundy said “we are very sensitive to the community issues related to this.

“We know the right way to do this is a collaborative approach,” he said, “where we’re saying, ‘Hey, we’re going to share with you what our plans are so you have an understanding, but we’re listening so that we can make sure we’re fine-tuning this in a way that is better and easier for the community.’”

That, he said, is why he reached out to Adduci and Forest Park Mayor Rory Hoskins a year ago to present the proposed plan. He added “ we are actively looking to see if there is a reason to create a stop in the area,” which could impact the area economically.

But Adduci wondered if “it’s premature they announced this.

“They haven’t worked through the state legislators that represent us,” she said. “I can’t imagine they would agree to have 80 mph trains running through our community.

“We worry about a lot of things … not only the possibility of this, (but) the safety and the practicality. I don’t see where it benefits us, Forest Park or Franklin Park.”

Going underground from page 1 approved Christopher B. Burke Engineering to design two new underground water reservoirs at the southeast corner of the Altenheim site.

Throughout the year, the engineering firm will design the site, the reservoir and pump station structures, plus the pump station’s mechanical design. Under a separate contract, the engineering firm has already completed a topographical survey and will do a geotechnical survey as well as provide architectural design services.

The bidding process for constructing the new reservoirs is expected to begin this fall with construction starting next spring.

Building two separate million-gallon underground reservoirs is expected to cost the village $13 million, according to a Christopher B. Burke Engineering representative last March. The firm’s engineering services will run the village nearly $750,000, paid from local funds. Construction and construction engineering will be paid for through both local funds and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency’s low-interest loan program.

“We’re going to probably make additional requests,” Mayor Rory Hoskins told the Review. “We’ll get as much paid for by other units of government, state, county, what have you, as we can.”

After a meeting last May, when village staff and commissioners discussed land use options for the village-owned portion of the Altenheim, Village Administrator Rachell Entler was directed to work toward installing a submerged water reservoir in the southeast corner of the property.

At that meeting, Hoskins, Commissioners Michelle Melin-Rogovin and Jessica Voogd were in favor of building the reservoirs at the Altenheim. Commissioners Maria Maxham and Ryan Nero voted to build reservoirs at the adjacent CTA Blue Line parking lot.

Nero said at the Aug. 24 council meeting. “It costs more money. It’s farther away from the pump station. I still think the best solution is an underutilized parking lot.”

Nero was the only one who voted against the resolution to approve the water reservoirs at the Altenheim. Though Maxham wants them installed at the CTA lot, too, she voted to authorize Burke’s engineering services for the Altenheim location.

“Commissioner Nero and I would have preferred a village-owned parking lot so that the Altenheim would stay free and clear for potential development or other uses,” Maxham told the Review. “I still would prefer a parking lot, but I know that the will of the council is to have it there,” at the Altenheim.

At the council meeting before the Aug. 24 one, Village Planner Pete Losue presented next steps for the village-owned Altenheim property — that commissioners should choose whether to build something other than they’re approved to, which is currently R1 and R2 development, or single-family and two-family dwellings, townhouses and publicly owned parks and playgrounds.

“I’m very, very frustrated with the lack of movement on this,” Maxham told the Review. Though Losue said there would be monthly discussions about the Altenheim property, Maxham said, “It still feels like it’s starting over again, like we’re back in

kindergarten, with ‘Let’s talk about what we want’ and ‘Let’s meet with the Altenheim board.’ These are things that we have done more than once in the past, and I want to see a real plan in place and real movement on this.”

WHAT’S NEXT FOR POLICE?

Commissioners voice support for police department amid ‘maligning’ comments Discussion comes after Forest Park Police Department helped ICE agent, then police chief announced retirement

In July, Police Chief Ken Gross and Deputy Chief Chris Chin let an ICE agent into the Forest Park Police Department after he claimed someone was stalking him.

In August, Gross announced his retirement, which he said he’d been considering

for years. The same month, Mayor Rory Hoskins told NBC 5 Chicago, “I want my residents to know that we feel a mistake was made” in allowing the ICE officer into the police station.

“I do not want our officers or employees, in any capacity, assisting ICE,” Hoskins previously told the Review. “I hope that people in wider community understand that Forest Park wants to be a welcoming community.”

A month after the ICE agent came to Village Hall — and as residents continue to voice their distrust in village officials — commissioners spoke at the Aug. 24 council

meeting about the rift between the community and themselves and voiced their support for the Forest Park Police Department.

“I think what happened is our officers made a judgment call in real time, under real pressure and without any guidance from us up here in advance of that on how to deal with something if it came up,” Commissioner Maria Maxham said dur-

“But I’m afraid that what’s happened now is it’s become us-versus-them. I feel like I’m being asked to choose: Do I support immigrants or do I support the police? Because it can’t be both, but I’m not choosing. I’m supporting both, and I think that all of us should do that. I think that’s what the hard decision is here, but that’s the right decision.”

She continued to address how the situation should have been handled after it happened.

“I think what could’ve happened better in this situation is, from the get-go, to sit down with police leadership, Mayor, and say, ‘This thing happened and, guess what, I’m not real happy with this. This is a bad look, it’s a bad feel, people don’t like this.

Let’s work together and stand together, privately and publicly to address this and fix it and make it better,’” Maxham said.

To make it less of an us-versus-them situation, Maxham told the Review that the village needs to engage the community. She said she’s meeting with Betty Alzamora — who’s on the park board and has spoken at the last couple council meetings about designating ICE-free zones in municipal buildings and modernizing Forest Park’s welcoming resolution.

“I think it really is important that we address this, but I also want to make sure that the police leadership is involved too because they are the experts obviously in law enforcement,” Maxham told the Review. “It has to be a joint effort.”

ing that two things can be true: Forest Park residents feel unsafe, and the Forest Park Police Department does a good job.

“It is true that some residents feel unsafe as a result of what happened,” Maxham said, citing multiple comments she’s heard and emails residents have sent her.

“There’s good reason why they don’t feel safe. We all have seen, on documented oc-

casions, ICE using excessive force, and even deadly force in situations. That’s really scary, and that’s not something that I want around here. People need to feel safe and they need to be safe.”

“The other thing that’s true is I’ve heard a lot of people maligning our police department, especially the leadership. I want to push back really hard against that because I don’t think it’s true that our police in general, or our police leadership, are doing a bad job or did a bad job. Another option would’ve been to allow some confrontation to happen in Village Hall, and I don’t think that would’ve been a great solution either. I think ICE agents are notoriously bad at deescalating situations, and I personally would want an ICE agent removed from a situation with two teenagers because I think that’s the recipe for a bad situation I wouldn’t want to happen either.”

Commissioner Ryan Nero gave his commissioner’s comment after Maxham, agreeing with her.

“I saw police acting in a way to protect and serve an individual. It just happened to be an ICE agent. I think that’s what we forgot. I do support our Chief of Police, and I support our police department,” Nero said. “There’s been some disparag-

I look forward to leading our already established police department into the future.”

Pater said his aim for the police department is simple: “My goal is to make sure that my officers have everything they need to do their jobs on a daily basis and make sure the residents are protected and feel safe.”

He also aims to increase manpower — since the department is about five officers short of being fully staffed at 38.

“Manpower is definitely one of the best things that we can do going forward, trying to develop resources and be able to help our residents more when it comes to being able to be there.”

“Our term is four years, but this is what these people do for a living. I think we need to sit back and really think hard before we make comments and things that could quite easily affect their reputation and/or their livelihood.”

Commissioner Michelle Melin-Rogovin also lauded the police department during her commissioner’s comment.

“I have asked of them and displayed the same respect for our first responders throughout my time in village life. The

first thing I decided when I joined as an elected official was that I was not going to second guess any decision that an individual officer makes, but that I was going to take the opportunity to ask questions and seek clarification and become more informed in my role as an elected official,” Melin-Rogovin said. “One of the reasons I ran for office was those same first responders — our police, our fire — came to my house and served me in my time of greatest need. I reject, categorically, any notion that, by asking questions, that I do not respect or care about them. In fact, I seek to support them in doing so.”

“I think most of us all share a common goal, and that is to keep Forest Park safe,” said Commissioner Jessica Voogd. “I’ve personally witnessed, on many occasions, on-duty officers exhibiting professionalism, restraint and kindness. It is a constantly evolving process, and I respect the work that they do in partnership with the community, but also we need to listen to

“I’ve watched him distinguish himself over the last 4 or 5 years, particularly during COVID,” Hoskins said. “He’s a really solid performer. He’s well respected.”

Pater said, before he was announced as Chief Designate, he spoke with Hoskins, Village Administrator Rachell Entler and some of the village council members, plus forwarded his resume to them.

“I know sometimes fear can strike people if they’re bringing a chief in from the outside. Bringing someone up through the ranks and really being a leader from within, I think that helps settle everyone down,” Pater said. “I hope to be the leader that everyone wants to be, and everyone wants to work for.”

When asked if he interviewed anyone else for the position of police chief, Hoskins told the Review, “I read the police reports regularly. I have for the last 6 years, so I tend to know the strengths of the members of the police department. I have a lot of respect for Chief Designate Pater and a lot of other people do, so he was a natural choice.”

When asked about potential new training for the Forest Park Police Department after Police Chief Ken Gross and Deputy Chief Ken Gross let an ICE agent into a restricted area at village hall on July 30, Hoskins said he’s speaking with Pater about updating or reforming police department policies and training.

“In reference to the recent events, I would coordinate and speak with the mayor, and we can speak with village council members and coordinate a plan to figure out what we need to do to ensure transparency and accountability and make sure that, going forward, the residents feel safe,” Pater said, “and making sure that we’re doing our jobs to their entirety.”

“The important thing to do, and the responsible thing to do, is to understand that, when missteps happen, we need to step back and evaluate those and figure out how to move forward,” Voogd said. “A lot of things can be true at once, but we also have to have the strength to say, ‘I like you and maybe this didn’t go as it should have and we’re going to look into it and we’re going to talk about it.’ It doesn’t mean that anybody is disparaging anybody. It means that we’re trying to better ourselves as a community.”

Hoskins, who always gives his commissioner’s comment last before adjourning the council meeting, did not mention the Forest Park Police Department or ICE.

Pater started with the Forest Park Police Department as a patrol officer. He then joined the department’s tactical response unit, which works with local patrol and investigative divisions to address crime patterns in the village.

He was sworn in as sergeant of the Forest Park Police Department in 2018 and, in Jan. 2023, was promoted to lieutenant and now runs the department’s investigations.

When asked if any successful investigations stick out to him in the past three years — including the recent arrest of two people who stole masoleum doors from local cemeteries — Pater said, “Every case matters to everyone. The mausoleum door theft is a major one right now, but to us it’s just as significant as someone being battered or a crime against a person.”

Pater has helped update the village’s emergency response plan and served as a use of force instructor, public information officer and on the Special Response Team — a counter drug unit that is also trained in hostage situations and containing barricaded subjects.

Forest Park mausoleum doors stolen, likely for scrap metal The high price of scrap copper may be motivating such crimes

Two individuals were arrested in August for stealing brass doors from cemeteries in Forest Park and surrounding municipalities. Police departments in Forest Park, Hillside, LaGrange, Westchester and Justice collaborated to locate John Kozeluh, 49, and Lana Grey, 38, both of Westchester, and charge them for the crimes.

Several mausoleum door thefts have occurred in the western suburbs this summer, and Forest Park police have reported four such cases since the start of July. Following Forest Park’s first mausoleum door theft of the year on July 6, a police report dated July 19 said another pair of solid bronze mausoleum doors, as well as bronze window bars, were observed missing in a Forest Park area cemetery. According to the police report, each door weighed between 150 and 200 pounds. They would cost around $30,000 to replace. Another report dated Aug. 6 estimated that each door was worth over $1,000, and an Aug. 8 report values a stolen 300-pound door at $7,000.

“It definitely doesn’t seem like that [stealing mausoleum doors] was a regular crime. It has happened over the years, and I know it’s typically for scrap metal,” Forest Park Police Chief Kenneth Gross told the Review in July.

Ben Stickle, a criminal justice professor at Middle Tennessee State University and expert in metal theft, said an increase in the price of copper may contribute to an increase in thefts. Brass and bronze are both metal alloys made primarily of copper, so their scrap price tends to increase with the price of scrap copper.

“Pure copper right now is trading at like $6.50 per pound, which is really high,” Stickle said. “Metals like copper, brass, bronze, etcetera — they’re more valuable per pound than almost any other metal that people can get a hold of.”

Stickle said the trade of illegal scrap metal can take multiple forms. Some people may try to cut up or melt down stolen metal themselves. Other times, stolen metal is trafficked “quasi-legally” by people who gather together scrap metal from multiple sources and sell it.

Scrap metal theft can be one-off or highly organized.

Stickle compared metal theft to other kinds of crime, saying it could be conducted on an individual “street level” or at a very organized, high level. For some people, the illegal

scrap metal trade is their career.

“I met people who all they did was steal metal. They called it their job,” Stickle said.

Stickle added that, in his experience, almost everyone who becomes involved in metal theft has worked with metals at some point in their life.

According to Stickle, cemetery theft has appeared to be on the rise for a few reasons. First, he said the price of copper is the highest it has been in over a decade. Stickle, who conducted fieldwork with metal scrappers and thieves for his book on the topic, said thieves may take greater risks when the price of scrap metal is particularly high. Some

cemeteries may also have less security or surveillance, particularly at night, making them more attractive to metal thieves.

“Not only is the price higher, but the opportunity is higher,” he said.

Finally, cemetery theft is more likely to draw public attention than other forms of metal theft because of the sensitive nature of the crime scenes. The theft of copper and brass fixtures at a cemetery in Peoria and the theft of mausoleum doors in Benton Harbor, Michigan, are other cemetery metal thefts that received public attention this summer.

Stegemann focuses on one-on-one physical therapy care and internal team building OPRF grad and Riverside resident opening fourth clinic this fall

As a student at Oak Park and River Forest High School once upon a time, Caty Stegemann took a specialized test that would indicate what field of work in which she would excel as a professional.

Two possibilities were presented – healthcare and education.

A tough decision, but she took up the former and has thrived.

Stegemann founded Centre Physical Therapy at 207 Harrison St. in Oak Park in 2018, and since has expanded to Riverside and Lincoln Park. She plans to open a fourth location at 7625 Lake St. in River Forest this fall.

“OPRF was instrumental, and I did my volunteer work in the physical therapy department at West Suburban [Medical Center],” said Stegemann, who went to St. Louis University. “I fell in love with getting to know my patients one on one and helping them with whatever deficit they were dealing with.”

The calling card for her success has been ensuring every patient feels listened to, cared for and empowered.

“I want people to be proactive with their health as opposed to reactive,” she said.

“We’re able to see patients without a physician’s referral. I think it’s instrumental in avoiding injuries.”

What’s kind of funny to her is that there is an element of education to what she and her team do.

For example, any idea what vestibular rehabilitation is? No? Stegemann is your source.

“It’s when patients have an acute onset of dizziness,” she said. “It can be from an inner-ear issue, it can be from a concussion. Sometimes it can be from chronic neck pain or a migraine.”

Or how about TMJ? That stands for the long-winded temporal mandibular joint.

“People who grind their teeth, clench their jaw or even have chronic headaches, and facial and neck tension, that can some-

As an entrepreneur, there is certainly more to Stegemann’s professional life than care and education. It’s building a team at not one, but three locations (soon to be four) that are equally effective and share the same values.

In other words, it’s about team building, because, as she admitted with a chuckle, she can’t clone herself.

“I have very trustworthy managers at every clinic, so now I can actually step away from each of the clinics and know that they are being run smoothly,” she said. “The team at all the clinics are the best coworkers.”

Jill Thompson is manager at the Riverside location, 1 Riverside Road, Unit 107.

“She kind of makes sure there is a team collaborative approach with our patients,” Thompson said. “When she’s here, it’s kind of busy for her, because we throw a lot of questions at her. She’ll answer questions and pop over to look at a patient. That’s part of our collaboration.”

Team building does include an element of fun, Thompson added, including bowling and pool parties, which allows

employees at all locations to meet each other.

While the challenges of owning a business are many, another issue is thriving in a male-dominated field. Stegemann has lectured at many symposiums, usually focusing on the hip, which is her specialty, and often she is the only woman.

“I think I kind of gain respect in that I am a solo entrepreneur,” she said.

Stegemann, who lives in Riverside with her husband, Erik, and their two children, said that making all the tumblers fall as a business owner and a parent is the bigger challenge.

“You’re juggling that no matter what,” she said, “but Erik has been instrumental when I have to work those late nights and he can get my children to their activities.”

What of the future of Centre Physical Therapy? Stegemann has lots of ideas, but the biggest parameter is not growing so big that patients lose their one-on-one care … and her team doesn’t feel like a team anymore.

“I don’t want to grow too big where I lose sight of the family that we’ve built through Centre,” she said.

Uber Eats driver allegedly assaults Forest Park woman

On Aug. 25, a woman reported to police that, earlier that month, she and her husband ordered Uber Eats to their home on Circle Avenue. When the Uber Eats driver arrived, the woman opened the door for him and, after brief conversation, he entered her apartment, gave her a hug, attempted to kiss her and grabbed her breasts. The woman said she pushed him out of the apartment and closed the door. She told police that she’d sign criminal complaints against the man if he was located and that she reported the incident to Uber, which said it would no longer dispatch the driver to her address and provided her a number to a confidential sexual abuse hotline.

These questions are prompted by the fact that I “aged” over the weekend. Saturday night I attended a wedding reception, and I haven’t been to a wedding since my own, 15 years ago. It started out with the routine receiving line and the usual exchange of age-old pleasantries.

This was followed by the regular roast beef dinner. But as the dessert was being served, all bedlam broke loose! It seems that the band was told to start playing at 9 p.m. and they were right on time with a wild watusi (or whatever today’s jungle music is called.)

The bridesmaids all kicked off their shoes and went into contortions, which reminded me of being covered with poison ivy, plus having an itchy back. They “swam,” hit imaginary golf balls and convulsed.

We old-timers (ages 30-40) stood against the wall and gaped. Sure, we’ve seen this on TV, but here it was for real (and in living color). This madness was interrupted by the announcement that the newlyweds would now cut the cake, and in walked two bakers carrying a big CHOCOLATE CAKE! It just so happens that the bride likes chocolate cake, and it’s her wedding, so why not?

We then returned to pandemonium, as my ear drums popped and my ancient wife took me home. I took my Geritol and went to bed.

On Aug. 24, police spoke with staff at a cemetery. Because of recent thefts of mausoleum doors at local cemeteries, staff installed locks on all gates a few days prior.

But on Aug. 23, a groundskeeper found a cut lock on a gate. The cost of the lock is estimated at about $30.

Motor vehicle theft While on patrol on Aug. 24, a police officer saw a vehicle that was associated with an armed vehicular hijacking in Chicago.

Police pulled over the car in the 200 block of Des Plaines. The driver and two passengers opened their doors and exited the car before police told them to sit on the curb.

The driver attempted to run away, but police performed an emergency takedown and took him into custody. When police ran after the driver, the two passengers fled on foot at the same time backup arrived at the scene. Officers pursued the two men, locating one at the parking garage in the 200 block of Des Plaines and the other in the 7400 block of Washington. The driver was charged with motor vehicle theft, resisting police, and driving with a suspended or revoked license. The passengers were both

charged with criminal trespass to a vehicle and resisting police.

Aggravated battery Police were dispatched to 400 Thomas Ave. on Aug 22 for a fight in progress. Upon arrival, a man told police that another person punched him and was inside the liquor store. Police entered the store and detained the suspect. The suspect told police that the other man nearly hit him with his car in the parking lot and refused to apologize.

Police reported that the victim had bleeding inside his mouth and a scrape on his forehead. The offender was charged with aggravated battery.

These items were obtained from Forest Park Police Department reports dated Aug. 21 - 27 and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Anyone named in these reports has only been charged with a crime and cases have not yet been adjudicated. We report the race of a suspect only when a serious crime has been committed, the suspect is still at large, and police have provided us with a detailed physical description of the suspect as they seek the public’s help in making an arrest.

The style of our worship is not conservative in a reactionary sense, but neither is it fully progressive. Openness and reverence meet in our sermons and hymns: openness to the challenges and hurts of a diverse world in crisis, and reverence for what the deep symbols of Scripture and sacraments offer to shape us.

Many spiritual seekers who consider traditional Christianity may find themselves confused about what to do about the particular claims about Jesus Christ. These often seem exclusive to other spiritual traditions. At United the approach to this is to lean on the particular. Each of us in the end must live a particular life, learn from particular mistakes, and die a particular death. The confession that God meets us in Jesus Christ is true to the human experience of being particular. Even though worship at United Lutheran offers full expression to the claim that God’s universal love meets this world in Jesus Christ we don’t from that confession go on to claim to know more than we can about anyone else’s experience or tradition. We take our place with respect for a plural world of many voices.

Cemetery thieves caught. Thanks, Forest Park police Congratulations to the Forest Park Police Department (and police from Westchester, LaGrange, Hillside and Justice) for catching the thieves desecrating graves in the area. As someone who spends time in the local cemeteries, I can attest to their incredible beauty. There are many stunning monuments and markers honoring those who have passed.

These places of rest should remain safe and cherished. It is shocking to think that criminals were stealing irreplaceable doors only to be melted down for scrap. I’m grateful our police force worked so diligently to bring these folks to justice. And my fingers are crossed that some of the doors were found before they were melted down and can be put back in their rightful places.

Four Garage Gallery artists

y wife has a painting hanging on the wall above her desk of three women dressed in African garb, dancing. She bought it here in Forest Park directly from the artist because every time she looks at the painting it brings her joy.

She acquired the painting before I ever heard the term “social prescribing.”

Social prescribing, the King’s Fund website explains, “generally refers to health-care professionals connecting people to a range of non-clinical support such as the arts.”

In other words, the medical profession is beginning to officially recognize that the viewing and doing of art can promote healing and wellness and are prescribing it for their patients.

Many of the artists at the annual Garage Galleries event I talked to had never heard of the concept stated in those terms, but when I explained it to them, they immediately understood. In fact, four of them emailed me stories or testimonials regarding how creating art affects them emotionally and even spiritually.

Joel Heinz is an artist who works primarily with clay as a ceramicist, and also pen and ink on paper. He said he gets into a “zone” where time ceases to exist and he is fully engaged in what he loves to do.

“While working on projects I stream music to help transport me to the zone. It feels as if my blood pressure decreases and any nerves I have to deal with during my life are left behind as I engage with the physical creation and the discoveries I encounter.”

He was a freelance graphic designer for 38 years. He always wanted to stay freelance because it gave him a lot of time to work on art when he wasn’t busy making enough money for his family to survive on.

Bret Juliano is a cartoonist, author and illustrator. He has been creating his comic “Dust Bunny Mafia” for more than 10 years, along with other comics and illustrated projects that combine humor and history.

“A lot of my recent work,” he said, “takes real stories from Chicago and Mafia history and retells them through cartoons, finding some humanity and absurdity hiding inside history.”

He doesn’t think of cartooning as “therapy” but does acknowledge that there is a “mental shift” that happens when he sits down at his drawing table and becomes absorbed in what he is doing.

“Creating art,” he says, “gives me a place to focus my attention and energy on something entirely my own. There’s also something valuable about humor in particular. Much of the history I research can be pretty dark, but cartooning lets me approach it from a completely different direction and find the

strange, funny or ridiculous moments within it.”

Natalie Steinmetz creates sculptural and functional ceramics.

“I’m able to lose myself in my work,” she says, “and feel a strong sense of purpose and accomplishment when I’m done.”

She also talked about how viewing and using the work of other artists affects her emotionally.

“I own lots of other artists’ artwork,” she explained, “and have a large mug collection from other ceramic artists. Each day I choose a mug that brings me joy to have my coffee in the morning. Each mug has a story behind it and memories of when I acquired it.”

She talked about a way she had found to loosen up and have fun creating art. “I started making whimsical monster sculptures. It was a great way of connecting with others and letting go of being so serious.”

Pat Battle, who creates multimedia analog collages, said, “I find creating art to be profoundly cathartic as a means of processing the rapidly paced contemporary media landscape, which itself often resembles an assemblage of patchworked elements comprising some larger idea ripe for individual interpretation. It empowers me by allowing the creation of cohesion from chaos, even if the bigger picture is an ugly one.”

Battle said she didn’t always fancy herself being an artist.

What changed her was a visit to the Museum of Contemporary Art as part of a course she was taking at Harold Washington College.

“I wandered into the New Chicago Comics exhibit, where I was made captive immediately by a rather large black and white drawing by Anders Nilsen depicting a military jet actively crashing through a cabin home. It unveiled something I hadn’t anticipated: access. I was learning that accessibility to art was not limited to some narrow, prestige-defined binary.

I could make of it whatever my experience and personal growth brought to the table.

“I carry the weight of that self-discovery with me to this day and it informs the composure with which I find myself capable of channeling my own ideas and philosophies through the works I conceive. I have a profoundly deep desire to establish and maintain that same energy and relationship with my own audience.”
