THE ARTS Xxxxx
West Side artist’s inspiration starts at home
To find her voice, Alexandria Eregbu looked to her heritage
A
rtist Alexandria Eregbu grew up in Iowa, but she and her family would often travel to her great-grandparents’ house in East Garfield Park. “My great-grandfather was a photographer who built a dark room in the basement,” she recalled during an interview in February. “Seeing his work over four decades, and Chicago as it changed over time, is inspiring.” Her great-grandmother, a master quilter, was another major source of inspiration. “She was one of the reasons why I learned and started to sew,” Eregbu said. “And perhaps one of the reasons why I’m so obsessed with cloth and fibers.” So when it was time to go to college, she knew that she wanted to study art and that she wanted to study it in Chicago. She attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. By Eregbu’s own account, actually becoming an artist wasn’t easy, but her work and persistence eventually paid off. Now living in Austin, she specializes in three-dimensional pieces that feature a wide variety of materials. Eregbu draws upon her family’s legacy, as well as the traditions of African Americans and Nigeria, her father’s homeland.
ALEXANDRIA EREGBU West Side artist
According to her website, Eregbu uses a wide array of materials in her work — including feathers, obsidian, indigo dye, granite tombstones, cowrie shells, daisies, rhinestones, cotton, linen, Kanakelon hair and black vinyl. She uses them to create objects and installations of various sizes. Photography is a component of many of her installations. While her great-grandmother’s work was a major influence, Eregbu said she gravitated toward textiles in large part because of the energy of “communities of people.” In college, she said, the art history curriculum lacked any information about black artists—American or otherwise. She added that it wasn’t until after she graduated that she really started to explore her heritage on her father’s side of the family, delving into the culture and art of the Igbo and Yoruba people, who live in Nigeria and other West African countries. “I have been looking to the philosophy, culture and traditions of West Africa as a way to not only approach things differently in the studio, but also add the new dimensions on perspective [and] also engaging the audience and how we present and talk about art,” she said. Men Making a Difference
North Lawndale group reclaims lots and lives
B
efore entering the alley that leads into a vacant lot off in North Lawndale one day earlier this year, Robert “Rock” Calhoun Sr., 64, stopped to read a mural he helped paint on the adjacent building: “It is easier to build strong children than to repair a broken man.” Once just empty spaces, these two lots near the intersection of 15th Street and Homan Avenue have become a safe place where people can gather, play games or watch a movie projected against a nearby building. There’s a playground for kids, and last summer a free children’s camp was hosted here. The road to reclaiming the space has brought together a group of men, some who say their past offenses have given them a desire to create something beautiful for the neighborhood. “It started out as dominoes,” Calhoun said, looking toward a makeshift wooden table in one of the lots. “We played dominoes from sun up to sun down sometimes. It got cold, we dug a pit, [and] we burnt wood to stay warm… A group of men joined up with us, there was 36 of us at one time.” Crowds of people from the neighborhood would gather to observe the game and listen to their banter, jokes and spiritual discussions, he said. said. “So this organization was a great tool for men to come together to change their mindset. It begins to take fear out of the minds of the people in the community.” That’s how Men Making a Difference, or MMAD, was formed. Founded in 2014, the
group’s mission is to combat violence and to build programs to “restore” people to the community, based on the principles of restorative justice. Calhoun speaks often about putting the word “neighbor” back in “hood.” Resita Cox | City Bureau

Longtime ABC bank employees retire rich with memories
Rosie Moses and Mary Cullitin worked at the bank for over four decades
W
hen the Austin branch of ABC Bank moved from its longtime location at 5645 W. Lake St. to its new location at 6400 W. North Ave. in June 2017, it left a world in its wake — namely that of Rosie Moses and Mary Cullitin, both of whom retired last week after working at the bank for more than 40 years. “When I started here, baby, they didn’t have these,” Moses said, pointing to a computer that was nearby. “They had these great, big old adding machines.” Moses came to Austin from Gary, IN (by way of her native Kosciusko, Mississippi) in 1971 — the year she got a job at ABC. She started in the bookkeeping department before transitioning to the bank’s savings and checking departments. For the last three year’s, Moses said, she’s be a receptionist. “She knows at least 1,000 people by their first names,” said Bernard Clay, a good friend, who had dropped off some flowers for Moses and Cullitin on the day before the last day of their working lives. Cullitin was busy while Moses chatted during a brief interview, posed for cellphone photos and exchanged contact information with patron Lucille Webster, who wasn’t ready to see Moses leave. “I’ve been coming here for 10 years,” Webster said. “I met Rosie at Edna’s restaurant. She came there to recruit some people for the bank. That’s how I met her. She’s a very nice lady. I love her to death. We’re going to keep in contact.” Moses said she’s worked under five different bank presidents, before naming them

on one hand. Colette Loesher, ABC Bank’s current president and CEO, was effusive in her praise of the two women. “They are two of our most valuable employees,” she said. “They represent everything the bank represents. Although I’m sorry to see them go, they’ve earned their retirement. I wish them all the best.” Loesher said that, while Moses and Cul-
litin are among the bank’s longest tenured workers, it’s common for ABC employees to stay for the long haul. Founded in 1891, ABC Bank may be the oldest chartered bank in Cook County. “We have very little turnover,” she said. “A lot of our employees have been here for over 15 years. I’d guess maybe more than half.” After four decades working, Moses is ready for the next stage of her life. She has grandchildren to dote on, siblings to visit. And after nearly a decade away, she’ll finally be able to return to Kosciusko — the place where her life began. Michael Romain 2018 austinweeklynews.com | 17

NEAR WEST SIDE’S NEIGHBORHOOD BANK
What do we love the most about this neighborhood? The people we share it with! That’s why we support the families here, the local businesses and the charitable organizations, too. Beyond providing banking solutions, we also take pride in giving back to the people who work to make this area so great. Why? Because this isn’t just home to us; it’s home to all of us. And, as a true community bank, we know that when we all do our part, we can help make Chicago better for everyone.

PARKS
Remembering Mary Peery The West Side’s parks and gardens will be her legacy
I
t’s hard to talk about parks on the West Side without mentioning Mary Peery, the well-known founder of the Austin Green Team who died in November 2017 after a lengthy illness. She was 91 years old. The Green Team, an organization that’s become renowned for its prolific planting of gardens throughout the West Side, was founded by Peery in 1995. She had been the group’s president since her retirement in 2016, Vera Watson said. “She was not only concerned about her block, but other blocks that had vacant lots in the area, so she began to recruit other people and showed them how they could turn ugly vacant lots into beautiful flower and vegetable gardens,” Watson recalled, referencing the Green Team’s origins. In addition to the organization’s flagship garden on the corner of Huron and Latrobe, the Green Team has seven other gardens that it planted, all under the steady, guiding hand of Peery, who Watson said had to have been born to garden. Peery was born on Dec. 16, 1925, on a farm in W E S T

She was the oldest child and fell in love with gardening while farming beside her father. She moved to Chicago, got married, birthed two daughters — Neva Hardaway and Geraldine Green — and got a job working in a steel mill for 30 years before flourishing in retirement. The Green Team, Watson said, grew out of Peery’s backyard garden.

In 1989, Peery was instrumental in the demolition of an abandoned building on her block. And along with her sister, Leola Spann and the Botanic Gardens, she started the first community garden in the Austin area. Peery went on to local renown through her gardening efforts, winning a slew of awards, including an acknowledgement from former Chicago mayor Richard Daley. Her photo currently hangs in the Daley Center, Watson
said. “She labored so hard for freedom for over 30 years in the Austin area,” Watson said. “When we’d be out in the garden and it looked like it was going to rain, she’d tell us she had a line through to God and that it wouldn’t rain until she got her work done. And right when we got the last shovel on the truck, it would pour down. She’d say, ‘Thank you Lord, my work is done.’” Michael Romain

RESTAURANTS
West Side eatery shines during Black Restaurant Week LiFE restaurant in West Garfield Park a hit during annual event
F
or the past three years, Chicago Black Restaurant Week has spotlighted African-American-owned eateries throughout the city and its suburbs. But this year marked the first time a West Side business took part in the event, held Feb. 11 through Feb. 17, and the participant was a relative newcomer — LiFE restaurant, which has been open in West Garfield Park, at 3858 W. Madison St., for less than a year. Owner Joe Black said that participating in the event increased his customer base. Black founded LiFe Restaurant to provide more healthy choices in the community. In the months since, the response has been even more positive than he had hoped. As the first anniversary approaches, Black is looking to add sit-down dining and offer free poetry open mics and musical programming to allow local people more opportunities to showcase their talents. Chicago Black Restaurant Week was founded by Chicago PR professional Lauran Smith. By that point, Choose Chicago, the City of Chicago’s official marketing organization, had already been doing Chicago Restaurant Week for eight years. The event was designed to bring attention to restaurants throughout the city, with participants offering special deals.

Smith wanted to do something that focused on black-owned restaurants in particular. She said that she hopes to spotlight “hidden gems” throughout the city and to help the communities where those gems are located. “Our main goal is to rebuild and restore our communities, and CBRW is one small step in that direction,” Smith said. The business week is open to all black-owned restaurants located in the city and the suburbs, although Smith emphasized that this doesn’t include Indiana cities near the Chicago border. The applicants must fill out an application and Smith’s organization checks to make sure the

applicant really is black-owned. “We have not only been able to successfully bring about more visibility to black owned food and beverage businesses, but we have also been told of an
increase in revenue to those businesses, as well as the need to hire additional employees,” she said. Igor Studenkov

It’s a Commandos world Dorothy Gaters and Marshall had quite the year in 2018
T
his year was quite the ride for the Marshall High School woman’s varsity basketball program and its legendary coach, Dorothy Gaters. In January, Nike released a short ad on its social media platforms featuring Gaters dispensing her wisdom. “I think if you consider a person equal to you, then you will treat them with a certain amount of respect and dignity,” Gaters says — her calm, dignified tone a fitting soundtrack to a black-andwhite tableau that puts in stark relief Chicago’s two sides: one that’s overwhelmingly poor and darker-hued; the other wealthy and overwhelmingly white. The short ad opens with an expansive shot of the sky followed by the city’s famous skyline foregrounded by Lake Michigan. Gaters voice intermixes with the sound of water rippling and wind howling. “I think if you consider a person equal to you, then you will treat them with a certain amount of respect and dignity,” Gaters says before a freighted pause made heavier by the U.S. flag rippling in the breeze. “If we don’t have a mindset of fairness, we can’t translate that into the next generation,” the prominent coach continues as the sound and sight of the city’s ‘L’ train signal an ironic transiW E S T

High School woman’s varsity basketball program defeated Harlan High School in Chicago, 53 to 44, in the Illinois High School Association state championship game in Normal to take home the state title — Gates’ ninth. Michael Romain

A one-man movement to help the homeless John Netherly aims to help those who prefer to live on the streets
T
hey found Miss Bernice dead in a doorway. John Netherly said he knew that would happen. He had been pleading with police for months to take Miss Bernice to a hospital or mental health facility, telling officers the woman was not mentally capable of making decisions in her best interest. “There’s nothing we can do,” Netherly heard in return. The homeless woman then passed alone of a drug overdose in January, after refusing Netherly’s offer to connect her with a social service, temporary housing, mental health or other agency. Netherly is the founder of the Bedrock Movement, a nonprofit that serves those like Miss Bernice who choose to sleep on the street instead of in a shelter. A 2016 survey by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development found that, of the 952 people researchers counted as being homeless in the Chicago suburbs in 2016, 110 were unsheltered. In the city, 1,243 of the 5,889 were sleeping outside. This year, the Northern Illinois Chapter of the American Red Cross recognized Netherly’s work

with the homeless, and nominated him to receive a community service award at its annual Heroes Breakfast in May. Netherly has spent his life serving the homeless and mentally ill. His father, who balled as a Harlem Globetrotter before

working at the post office for 40 years, and mother would often cook meals and hand them out in front of shelters. Netherly went on to study ways to give back, earning a master’s degree in social work from Dominican University, a master’s in urban ministry from Moody Theological Seminary and a master’s in business management at National Louis University. At seminary school, Netherly learned that homeless ministry is underserved. And, that those
who serve this population, are often overworked. He decided he would focus his energy on the disadvantaged and has worked with the mentally ill for 15 years, and is presently employed by Presence Behavioral Health as a behavioral health technician. Since Netherly is unmarried and works the night shift at Presence, he spends six days a week travelling to the West and South Sides of Chicago and tending to the needs of the homeless. This experience gave credence to his suspicion that most, if not all, of the people who choose to live on the street do so because they are mentally ill. Tom Holmes

Austin Village AV 72 Chicago is a Special Service Area (SSA) in Austin working to build a more vibrant corridor. It is focused on building the corridor from within by celebrating the “Culture, Community, and Commerce” that makes Austin strong. The Good Neighbor Campaign was organized by residents, churches, community agencies and leaders as a support apparatus for residents on blocks that have faced increased violence, neighbor isolation, abandoned housing, and youth joblessness. The Good Neighbors act as a connection source for resources and community energy and assets.
