Loretto CEO’s church target of FBI probe into vaccinations

Investigation focuses on the city’s role in vaccinations done at the church when West Siders were struggling to get their shots

The FBI is investigating potentially improper vaccinations Loretto Hospital administered at its CEO’s suburban church — including the city of Chicago’s role in the vaccinations, government records show.

A federal grand jury subpoena was issued to the city’s law department on Nov. 10, more than five months after Block Club Chicago revealed the West Side hospital vaccinated people at an Oak Forest church whose leader is a friend of Loretto CEO George Miller.

The FBI is also probing vaccinations the hospital did at Trump Tower, Block Club

and the Better Government Association reported earlier this year. All the subpoenas were issued “pursuant to an official criminal investigation.”

The most recent subpoena focused on the church vaccinations, which were done in February at Valley Kingdom Ministries International in southwest suburban Oak For-

Now, land at 5113 Vacant St. will be sold for $1 to Expert Management Inc., a company that will remediate the property before giving it to the North Austin Community Center.

The $31 million project is being developed as a partnership between By the Hand Club for Kids and Grace and Peace Church Revival Center, with additional support from Intentional Sports and Chicago Neighborhood Initiatives.

The North Austin Community Center will be a state-of-the-art sports facility that will bring after-school programs and athletic opportunities to local youth. The center will begin to remedy the lack of programs and facilities for young people on the West Side, said John Zayas, pastor of Grace and Peace Church.

“There is something about having a facility with that type of quality and expertise and being able to really pour into kids with purpose and hope. They’ll be able to dream of what they could be,” Zayas said.

The Vacant Street lot was formerly the site of the Glidden Paint factory, which left the land “heavily contaminated,” said Mike Parella, a project manager working on the project for the city’s planning department.

The company is a subsidiary of AkzoNobel, the Dutch conglomerate that previously owned the paint factory that contaminated the land.

A By The Hand clubhouse being developed at the center is expected to serve at least 400 kids from neighborhood public schools. The clubhouse will host afterschool programs offering academic assistance, technology instruction, tutoring and mentorships.

“Our role in this new facility will be to help our kids excel academically while loving them holistically,” said Donnita Travis, By the Hand’s executive director.

Outside, there will be fields and courts expected to serve at least 25,000 participants each year. This last plot of land sold

by the city will eventually become the project’s largest outdoor athletic pitch.

The campus will include the Chicago Fire FC Soccer Field, which will become the city’s only indoor FIFA-regulation turf arena and the largest turf field on the West Side. The Fire will also offer at least 20 hours of weekly free community soccer programs at the campus.

The Jason Heyward Baseball Academy will also offer sports training at the center.

“The pandemic and what took place with the riots, our kids didn’t have hope for anything. We saw kids were hopeless. We believe we will give kids the opportunity to find some hope,” Zayas said.

Still under scrutiny from page 1 In a brief telephone interview, Miller referred reporters to hospital representatives, who declined to comment. Apostle H. Daniel Wilson, a longtime pastor at Valley Kingdom Ministries International, could not immediately be reached for comment.

City spokespeople could not immediately respond to a request for comment Friday, but Mayor Lori Lightfoot has previously said the city is cooperating with the FBI investigation.

The subpoenas represent demands for records and information and made no allegations of wrongdoing against any church leader, Loretto administrator or city official. The subpoenas also do not spell out the scope of the grand jury investigation or its targets.

The Illinois Attorney General’s Office is already investigating the hospital for “potential misuse of charitable assets” following reports from Block Club and the Better Government Association that revealed one of former CFO Anosh Ahmed’s friends won contracts worth $4 million from the nonprofit hospital while Loretto board members took hospital-funded Caribbean trips, among other benefits.

As the pandemic tore through low-income communities of color, officials provided Illinois’ first vaccination doses to Loretto in December, in large part to assure Black and Latino citizens they would be prioritized and protected.

But Loretto then administered vaccines at Trump Tower, where Ahmed lived; at a luxury watch shop and jewelry store and to workers of a high-end Gold Coast steakhouse.

The first vaccine event at the church was held Feb. 6, less than two weeks after the city opened eligibility and many older, at-risk Chicagoans were still desperately trying to get shots. Members got their second shots Feb. 27.

Valley Kingdom Ministries was one of the first churches — if not the first — visited by the hospital, according to newsletters written by Miller to Loretto staff and obtained

by Block Club. Beyond the professed friendship between Miller and Wilson, senior pastor at Valley Kingdom Ministries International, it is not clear why the church would have been given such preference.

At the time, only frontline workers and people 65 and older were broadly eligible for the vaccines. Officials were also voicing concerns as many of the city’s vaccine doses — up to 40 percent — were going to people who live in the suburbs.

Loretto sent a team to the church “to administer 204 vaccinations of their members, who lived, worked or received their [health care] from those living in Chicago,” Miller wrote in a newsletter to hospital staff that spring. Later, in the same newsletter, he acknowledged demand was high in

In a video from Feb. 28, the church’s leader, H. Daniel Wilson, and Miller discuss having been friends for more than 40 years. They attended college together, were fraternity brothers and are even close enough that Miller attended Wilson’s bachelor party, they say in the video.

In the video, Wilson directly thanks Miller for the vaccinations and says the people vaccinated came from the church and “Chicagoland area,” a term used to describe the vast metropolitan area in and around the city.

“We vaccinated 200 primarily members from the Valley and from the Chicagoland area, and it could not have been done without the leadership, the open heart and the spirit of a brother beloved,” Wilson says of Miller. “You’re a friend, you’re a brother beloved, you’re a frat brother. But you’re a member of this ministry.”

In the video, Wilson gives an award to Miller to thank him for bringing Loretto to the church — and Miller then gives an award to Wilson for being Loretto’s “faith partner.”

Loretto’s self-audit of its vaccinations lists the shots done at the church as “decided eligible … outside of Chicago — healthcare in Chicago, work in Chicago, 65+.” But the report doesn’t say how or if the hospital determined if people who got shots at those events met those eligibility requirements.

Miller remains the CEO of Loretto Hospital. Another executive, Ahmed, resigned in March after Block Club revealed the vaccinations at Trump Tower, where Ahmed lived, and at businesses where Ahmed frequented.

In a March letter to Loretto’s staff, Miller took responsibility for the Trump Tower event, saying he authorized it.

The hospital’s board decided he would be suspended for two weeks without pay, though it was not clear when that suspension would happen since the hospital was then searching for Ahmed’s replacement, a hospital spokesperson previously said.

The hospital’s self-audit stated it administered 70 unapproved, ineligible vaccines at Trump Tower on March 10.

The city’s health department suspended vaccine doses to Loretto until the hospital could put its program in order.

State Rep. LaShawn Ford of Chicago stepped down from the hospital’s board March 23 to protest its slowness in responding to the mounting scandals. The next day, Ahmed resigned.

On March 25, Lightfoot called for an independent investigation into the hospital’s vaccinations.

The subpoenas state the current investigation is overseen

by Assistant U.S. Attorney Sheri Mecklenburg, who often handles complex financial cases, including white collar fraud and crimes against the elderly. She referred questions to an agency spokesman, who declined comment.

East Garfield Park gallery hosts holiday giveaway for students

The 345 Art Gallery gave early Christmas presents to students at Beidler and Morton on Dec. 17

On Dec. 17, 345 Art Gallery, 345 N. Kedzie Ave. in East Garfield Park, held a gift giveaway for students from two nearby elementary schools: Beidler Elementary School, 3151 W. Walnut St. and Morton School of Excellence, 431 N. Troy St. Younger kids got toys and games, with 170 gifts going to Morton students and 280 gifts going to Beidler students. Older kids got $15 McDonalds gift cards. Charmaine Gardner, the gallery’s events coordinator, said that the toy drive and giveaway was part of the gallery’s mission to engage local young people and be a positive force for the community.

Corry Williams, the gallery’ founder, has said that he wanted to create a space where East Garfield Park residents could feel like they belonged, a place that would inspire residents, especially kids, to explore their creativity.

Gardner said that the gift giveaway is an expression of positivity for the community this holiday season.

“We can build strength and give out things to the children that we know are essential and will bring holiday cheer,” she said.

The event was also something of a promotion for the gallery, in the sense that it let kids know that the gallery is around and is a critical resource kids can take advantage of.

Williams got help during the giveaway from his cousin, state Rep. Jawaharial Williams (10th).

“I wanted to help out, give back, let the children know we’re thinking of them, help them celebrate,” the legislator said.

“What we wanted to do was to give all you guys gifts, because we appreciate you,” Corry Williams told the students at Morton.

“You guys are our future. Keep working hard. Study and get good grades.”

John Hearon, a Morton art teacher, said he hopes that the giveaway helps rebuild connections between the gallery and the schools that the pandemic disrupted.

“We really should’ve done it a long time ago,” he said. “I appreciate all of you.”

Morton assistant principal Dr. Raven Daniels said that she appreciates that the volunteers “went out of their way” to make sure students got their presents.

“The kids are excited, I’m excited,” she said.

Morton principal Dr. Peggie Burnett-Wise, said that she especially appreciated the fact that the event was organized by someone from the community.

“I think that it’s a tremendous blessing to our school,” she said. “It’s really amazing, because it’s coming from within. To have someone from our community give back to our community. It’s really amazing.”

Giving someone’s best Christmas present ever

y teenage granddaughter is into anime. Having learned that there was an actual convention dedicated to that genre, I surprised her and we attended one of the 3-day convention dates this past summer. I watched in amazement as the shy, introverted girl came alive in one of the panel sessions as she discussed her favorite characters and the fallacies of how they had partnered that person with the wrong one.

I had never seen that child so animated. But when a kid is in their natural element, it does show.

Fast forward to this past weekend.

The Hyatt Regency in Rosemont again hosted a 3-day anime convention: Con+Alt+Delete. I had learned my lesson from my first experience. This time, I purchased a 3-day weekend pass. She could pick and choose all the different breakout sessions she wanted to attend, and I would be there as her escort. And for once, this hard-to-satisfy teenager got

the best Christmas present ever.

Attending anything with anime aficionados, you can expect to see some of the best self-designed costumes ever. This 3-day convention did not disappoint. These young people must spend months putting together outfits that are true reflections of the anime characters.

Dressing up as their favorite character is called “cosplay.” The anime characters range from the Sailor Moon variety, to one young person who had a vintage computer monitor as his head, complete with lights. Cosplay costumes are not limited to just anime characters. I saw a number of Spiderman, Star War storm troopers, medieval knights, and females in outfits you would only expect to see at a strip club.

As expected, the majority of folks into this are definitely under the age of 30. What I really was impressed with is

the camaraderie they shared with one another. We had one breakout session with some of the anime characters who are the villains. The audience got to ask them questions and even the ones who were insulting just brought out waves of laughter and applause. One young man dressed as a ninja even challenged one of the villains to an arm-wrestling contest.

The villain lost and was forced to confess how he loved his dreaded enemy.

One of the things that Chicago needs is this same sort of convention for our young people. I don’t think the city has ever put on anything that challenges our young people to come out and have real and safe fun. Can you imagine DuSable Drive from Roosevelt Road all the way to Randolph Street filled with young people roller skating, riding bikes, and just enjoying themselves?

I’m personally of the opinion that it’s only a small percentage of our young people who have become so warped in their mindset that causing havoc to them is considered having fun. It’s time to offer a reason and opportunity to begin to instill a change in that narrative.

West Suburban debuts new surgical robot

Austin man was first to be operated on with assistance from hospital’s new da Vinci XI surgical robot

Robert Bonner, 42, of Austin, was the first patient at West Suburban Medical Center, 3 Erie St. in Oak Park, to benefit from the new da Vinci XI surgical robot when he got gall bladder surgery on Nov. 16.

Although the hospital has been using surgical robots since September 2012, the new robot is more precise and includes more surgical tools. Bonner said that he was impressed with the technology and the care he got at the hospital, adding that he recovered quickly and the surgery didn’t leave any “hideous” scars.

Photos of the robot from Intuitive, the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based surgical robot manufacturer that makes the surgical device, show a towering structure with four tentacle-like appendages coming down from the top. Each appendage ends with a thin, flexible arms that can go into the body without requiring large openings.

Dr. Frederick Tiesenga, the chair of West Suburban’s surgery department, said that the advantage of the surgical robots is that they

allow for more precise, less invasive surgical techniques. This means patients spend less time recovering, so they can leave the hospital sooner than they would after more traditional surgeries.

The da Vinci XI robots, Tiesenga said, “take robotic surgery to the next level.” They are even more precise than the older robots and have better surgical instruments.

Bonner said that he had been feeling stomach pains “for probably six to seven months.”

At first, he thought the pain was indigestion, which he treated by drinking ginger ale, but that treatment didn’t work.

“Before I got the surgery, I was in a lot of pain,” he said. “Everything just wasn’t feeling right.”

On Nov. 15, Bonner was at his father’s house when the pain got so bad that he realized he had to get help quickly.

“The pain was just starting to get worse and worse,” he recalled. “And I was at my daddy’s house and I said, ‘Pops, I gotta go, I can’t take the pain no longer.’”

Bonner’s father called the ambulance, and he was quickly taken to West Suburban. The doctors found that Bonner’s gallbladder was causing the stomach pains and related high blood pressure.

“They were kind of shocked that I was moving around and I was living [with such a high blood pressure],” Bonner said.

From there, things moved quickly. The surgery was scheduled for the following day.

When asked whether he was okay with being the first person they used the da Vinci XI on, Bonner didn’t hesitate.

“I was like, ‘Sure,’” he said. “If it’s anything that can take care of that pain, it’s good with me.”

Tiesenga said that Bonner was chosen because he was “the first patient who was an appropriate candidate for using the da Vinci XI.” The doctor said that the surgeons were “very excited to do this.”

Since then, West Suburban surgeons have been using the robot on a regular basis.

“I am a general surgeon and I use it for all different kinds of operations, multiple times every week,” Tiesenga said.

Bonner said he was impressed with how

quickly he recovered. His father, who had the same surgery, had to stay in the hospital for “at least a week” afterwards, while his recovery took less than two days.

“By Thursday [Nov. 18], man, I was moving around, walking up and down the stairs, doing everything, and they sent me home,” he said. “By Thursday afternoon, I was back at the house.”

Since then, Bonner said he hasn’t had any issues.

“The scars weren’t really hideous, like I’ve seen with other people,” he said. “I am looking at the scars and I can hardly see them.”

City could buy West Side Aldi and turn it back into grocer

But first, West Garfield Park leaders are negotiating with Aldi to buy the Madison Street location so they can bring another grocer to the space

A key panel approved a proposal Thursday that would allow the city to buy a closed West Garfield Park grocery store, a move that would support community-led efforts to bring another grocer to the space.

Community leaders appealed to city leaders for help after the Aldi at 3835 W. Madison St. closed abruptly in October, worsening the severe scarcity of healthy food in West Garfield Park, which is considered to be a dire food desert.

The Garfield Park Rite to Wellness Collaborative organized a campaign demanding Aldi sell the vacant building to the community for $1 so it can be redeveloped into a supermarket with a mission and values that

align with the needs of residents.

The city plan, approved unanimously by the Community Development Commission Thursday, authorizes the city to buy the building if negotiations between neighborhood groups and Aldi fall through, planning department spokesperson Peter Strazzabosco said. The building is listed for $700,000.

The plan is scheduled for a City Council vote in January.

Bringing healthy food options to West Garfield Park has long been a top priority for residents, said TJ Crawford, director of the Rite to Wellness Collaborative. The support from the city is a “demonstration of what it looks like to have community-led initiatives in cooperation with public officials,” he said.

“We are that much closer to getting a community committed grocer,” Crawford said.

If the planning department gets City Council’s blessing to buy the former grocery building, it will give the city “a seat at the table” in negotiating with Aldi as the chain prepares to sell the building or find a new tenant, Strazzabosco said.

“I want there to be a bona fide, qualified grocer at this location. … If Aldi wants to participate, that’s fine. But we need to make that a reality. Whatever is going to get us

to that point is what we want to go forward with,” said Ald. Jason Ervin (28th).

The lack of fresh food in the neighborhood contributes to the massive health disparities West Garfield Park residents face, Crawford said.

West Garfield Park residents have an average life expectancy 16 years shorter than people living Downtown, according to a 2015 Virginia Commonwealth University report.

That gap isn’t due to shortcomings in clinical care alone, the study showed: It is also due to social conditions, including disinvestment, segregation and a lack of grocery stores.

The Rite to Wellness Collaborative campaign is about more than transforming the former Aldi location back into a grocery store, Crawford said. It is equally focused on raising the standard for what kinds of businesses are welcomed into the community and taking a stand against companies that value “profits over people,” he said.

“Aldi is still not being held accountable,” Crawford said. “There has been no recompense to their actions so far. We need to ensure that they will carry the harm that was done and ensure they don’t do it to other communities.”

The sudden closure is concerning since

the Aldi was a lifeline for many older people who lived at one of the four senior centers within a block of the supermarket, residents said.

The closure of the store was particularly harmful because Aldi gave neighbors who relied on them little to no notice before suddenly pulling out of the neighborhood, which “created a food desert,” Crawford said.

A spokesperson for Aldi said in a statement the store was closed due to long-term declining sales. But if Aldi had worked with local groups to open a dialogue about the struggling performance, the neighborhood could have worked together to find solutions to keep the store open, Crawford said.

The Rite to Wellness Collaborative organized a series of food giveaways at the site of the former Aldi to support those who have been left without options by the closure. The final giveaway is planned for 9:30 a.m.-noon Dec. 18 at 3835 W. Madison St. “I don’t want Aldi to do this to another community like they did to Garfield Park.

But ultimately, the consumer has to decide not to put their money in places that will treat them bad,” Ervin said.

Gov. Pritzker, after Edwardsville why does Amazon get a pass?

A

day after visiting Edwardsville, Ill., where an Amazon warehouse collapsed Friday from a tornado that killed six people, Gov J.B. Pritzker ascended the podium of the Greater St. John Bible Church in Austin.

During his brief Sunday address, the governor acknowledged what he said are “some dark and difficult times,” before connecting the tragedy of deadly weather in Edwardsville to the concurrent pandemics of COVID-19 and gun violence disproportionately touching the West Side, and to the Republican Party’s slow, roiling authoritarian coup.

“They want to take away that sacred right from you, because they know you’re not going to vote for them,” the governor told the predominantly Black churchgoers, among them longtime Congressman Danny K. Davis and Chicago Ald. Chris Taliaferro, an active member of the Greater St. John congregation.

“I’ve never seen it like this in America,” Pritzker said.

“It is awful what they are trying to do. They say their goal is voter integrity, but you know that’s not what they mean.

They want to keep Black people away from the polls. They want to take away your right to vote, because they know that you can make positive change.”

I was also in the congregation on Sunday, seated near the back of the sanctuary and hoping to hear the governor offer a more robust condemnation of the conditions that made the Amazon warehouse collapse much more tragic than it had to be.

The truth is that a tornado is only partially to blame for the loss of those six people. Pritzker, an enlightened billionaire and scion of the Hyatt hotel empire, omitted from his otherwise pitch-perfect oration as the state’s consoler-in-chief the name of another dark cloud hovering ominously over the country — that of workplace authoritarianism.

“It cares about profits,” one Amazon employee told People magazine after the Edwardsville tragedy. “It’s a business.

They’re not a church. They’re not a government. They’re a business in business to make money, which they are very good at. But they exert so much authority over people who work here, to our detriment.”

I was waiting for Pritzker to address his fellow billionaire, Jeff Bezos, who was too busy sending people to the edge of space to attend to the earthly matter in Edwardsville (Bezos eventually tweeted out his condolences on Saturday, after posting a photo to Instagram of his six-person Blue Origins human spaceflight team, Business Insider reported).

The governor did not mention Amazon’s policy of prohibiting its employees from having their phones on warehouse floors, a measure that employees who spoke to Bloomberg worried would affect them during emergencies like the tornado in Edwardsville.

Amazon officials told Reuters that there was no such policy in preventing employees or contractors from having cellphones. The dissonance reminds me of Amazon stridently denying and, after being disproven on Twitter, begrudgingly admitting that rushed and surveilled contract delivery drivers regularly relieve themselves in bottles.

In an effort to consolidate control over its workers while offloading responsibility for their wellbeing, Amazon relies on third-party contractor companies and contract employees — a reality that “complicated the rescue effort in Edwardsville,” the New York Times reported.

“On Saturday, Mike Fillback, the police chief in Edwardsville, said the authorities had ‘challenges’ in knowing ‘how many people we actually had at that facility at the time because it’s not a set staff.’ Only seven people at Amazon’s site were full-time employees, said a Madison County com-

missioner who declined to give his name. He said most were delivery drivers in their 20s who work as contractors.”

During his remarks at Greater St. John on Sunday, Pritzker talked about some of the glints of light in the darkness. One example he gave was that of “a 7-year-old girl, Olivia Drew, who is making masks and giving them out to homeless people.” Later in his remarks, Pritzker quoted scripture, the book of Deuteronomy, in which “God commands us — Justice, Justice shall you pursue.”

And then the Democratic governor offered the morally degenerate Republican Party and its attacks on voting rights as a prime example of obstruction. But I was hoping the governor, during his speech about an Amazon warehouse collapse, would also mention a much more immediate example of obstruction of justice — Amazon.

He could have mentioned one of the victims, Larry Virden, 46, of Collinsville, Ill., whose daughter, aptly named Justice, described her father as a “fun loving, outdoors person” who would help anybody in need.

Virden’s last text, minutes before the tornado leveled his workplace, was “Amazon won’t let us leave.”

“They told us that they couldn’t leave. My dad wanted to leave at 8:20. That tornado didn’t touch down till almost 20 minutes later. He could’ve been home,” Justice told KMOV 4 News. “My biggest question for Amazon in general is why didn’t they make sure the building was safer than what it was. There should be no reason a concrete building should be lifting off the ground. There’s no reason that 11-inchthick concrete should be falling onto people.”

Those are all valid questions that the governor should have amplified. On Sunday, Pritzker connected the tornado with the pandemics of COVID-19 and gun violence, describing them all as tragedies darkening the American landscape. The governor called out the GOP’s efforts at “voter integrity” for what they really are. He could just as easily have washed the mascara off Bezos’s performative empathy (“We’re heartbroken over the loss of our teammates there,” the billionaire boss tweeted).

Pritzker could have blasted Amazon’s notorious pattern of surveilling its workers, placing efficiency and profits over personal privacy. Why, for instance, would Larry Virden feel such pressure to continue working as a storm gathered?

The bad pay notwithstanding, imagine the pressure he must have felt, pressure that was likely compounded by the company’s highly sophisticated method of monitoring its employees.

Earlier this year, Business Insider reported, Amazon drivers learned that “their vans would start to feature a four-part camera with biometric feedback indicators … the system monitors if drivers look away from the road, speed, or even yawn, and then can send a live feed of the recording to managers.”

In 2019, Business Insider reported that Amazon “was instituting a system tracking warehouse workers’ ‘time off task,’ or the amount of time they are not directly working. The system … can result in a warehouse worker’s termination without directly involving a human supervisor or manager.”

I’ve interviewed current Amazon employees afraid to speak on record, if at all, about their workplace mistreatment, for fear of retaliation (one worker was an Amazon driver who admitted that he would sometimes relieve himself in plastic bottles in order to make his delivery quota).

The fear is palpable. The control is real.

Let’s talk about election tampering. Pritzker could have connected the GOP’s authoritarian election tampering with Amazon’s similarly authoritarian actions during the union

The Retail, Wholesale and Department Store union (RWDSU), which organized the drive culminating in the February election, contested the results (1,798 workers voted for unionization while 738 voted against it). In November, the National Labor Relations Board ruled in favor of RWDSU officials who contested the vote, arguing that “Amazon interfered with the election by — among other things — installing its own mailbox to collect ballots,” the Verge reported.

“Amazon security guards had access to the mailbox, giving some workers the impression that Amazon controlled the results,” the publication added.

How can we effectively talk about the very conspicuous rise of fascism and authoritarianism in our politics, and the attendant weakness of American democracy, without pointing out just how pervasive those threats are in workplaces across the country — starting with Amazon?

“Under the employment-at-will baseline, workers, in effect, cede all of their rights to their employers, except those specifically guaranteed to them by law, for the duration of the employment relationship,” Elizabeth S. Anderson writes in her 2017 book, How Employers Rule Our Lives (and Why We Don’t Talk about It).

Employers’ authority over workers, “outside of collective bargaining and a few other contexts … is sweeping, arbitrary, and unaccountable — not subject to notice, process or appeal,” and workplace governance, she adds, “is a form of private government,” which state and federal governments underwrite.

Perhaps Pritzker was silent about Amazon’s authoritarianism, because talk of “private government” pushes up against the boundaries of his enlightenment, which is progressive to the point of raising the minimum wage and spending more on education and focusing on police reform.

Does that enlightenment stop, however, at the point of allowing workers more control about how they work, how they’re compensated (and, dare I say, how the profits generated by their work are distributed)?

I’d like to know the reasons for Pritzker’s glaring omissions during his Sunday sermon, because the silence is deafening and, at this point in American history, dangerous.

To paraphrase a tweet I saw last year: Authoritarianism in the workplace is making it easier to accept authoritarianism in civic life.

And we announced a new $10,000 match from the Monroe and Fran Sullivan Charitable Fund.

Here’s the good news. We met and beat the Sullivan’s match. Now we are knocking at $100,000. That leaves $25,000 we need to raise by Dec. 31. And we now have a new challenge we’re offering to get us to goal.

The board of directors of Growing Community Media have combined on a $25,000 challenge. No gimmicks here. This is not a match. We have this money already banked thanks to the generosity and passion of our terrific board.
