This year’s presidential election — what many Americans have considered something of a long, national nightmare — may be over, but West Side community organizer Deborah Williams is still reeling, viscerally, from its effects. “Donald Trump supporters are spreading memes on Twitter in both English and Spanish, trying to trick Hillary Clinton supporters into thinking they can vote by text,” noted a Nov. 2 article published online by Wired Magazine, which clarified that “voting by text” doesn’t exist. Scroll down beneath its title, “Ignore the Trolls: You Definitely Cannot Vote Via Text,” and a screenshot of one of those misleading memes appears with Williams’ face blasted onto it. Williams, who volunteered on the Hillary Clinton campaign, is holding an African Americans for DEBORAH WILLIAMS Hillary sign. West Side activist “Avoid the line. Vote for Hillary and be a part of history.” Williams said she learned about her inadvertent part in this controversy last Thursday, when the meme was aired during a segment of MSNBC’s “The Rachel Maddow Show.” “I was at home and my phone started ringing off the hook,” Williams recalled. “Some people called saying, ‘We just saw you on the ‘Rachel Maddow Show’!’ I didn’t believe it was me, but then they saw it on Facebook and started tagging me in the video on Facebook.” See VOTE BY TEXT on page 6

Last Friday, as an estimated five million people converged along a lengthy, winding parade route and gathered in Grant Park to celebrate the Cubs win-

ning their first World Series in 108 years, some of the team’s West Side fans were dealing with the delirium as they went about their normal routines. Larry Lewis, 37, stood outside of a barbershop on Madison Street as he waited to get his hair cut. He was wearing a t-shirt that announced the Cubs as World Series Champions. His eyes showed fatigue. “I work at eight o’clock in the morning,” Lewis said. “I was outside at 3 a.m. The game was intense. To get that close and then wonder, like, are you even going to make it? But [when

they won], we went all the way to Forest Park, then downtown and then to Wrigleyville.” Lewis said his mother and grandparents were big Cubs fans, a trait they passed on to Lewis and his sister. “As a kid, [going to Cubs games] was my mom’s favorite thing,” he said. “She grew up on Austin and Lake, so they would take the train to the park. Sam Gause, 42, a hooper at heart We talked to Sam Gause while searching Madison Street last Friday for Cubs fans to interview for this week’s cover story. In addition to telling us his thoughts on the Cubs, Gause, who described himself as a fan of all Chicago sports, shared his memories of what it was like growing up as a budding athlete on the West Side. I grew up playing basketball, baseball, softball, football. We played everything. I went to Howe Grammar School, where I played basketball. Then I went to Prosser Vocational and started at point guard and wide receiver. The basketball circuit, when I was a young teenager, was really important in teaching us how to work with each other and things of that nature. It was really important. I was on a team called the Court Masters and my coach was Henry Cotton. There was also a team from the Emmet School area called the Wolf Park and we always played against each other in different tournaments. I had a chance to be part of a city championship team called the Columbus Park All-Stars. It was the best players from each team in this tournament and we played other teams from different parks through-

out the Chicago Park District. I was 13 years old and started at point guard. We got the trophies and the jackets and the game was televised. That was a pretty big deal for a 13-year-old. I think what made it work was the involvement of the adults in the park district system. The men volunteered their time to put these teams together and had them playing around the city in front of packed stands.

Worth the wait from page 1 10th-inning 8-7 victory over the Cleveland Indians on Wednesday transcended baseball, invoking memories of close relatives who died while waiting for “next year.” James LeFlaire, 26, said he’s been a Cubs fan since he was a kid, when his grandfather turned him onto the team. “We would go to the games when Sammy Sosa was playing in the early 2000s,” LeFlaire said. “When Sosa hit the ball, you knew when it was a home run. That was the best thing ever — being at the ballpark with him. He was a diehard fan.” LeFlaire said his grandfather, Darryl Jackson, died at the end of 2003, when the Cubs went to the National League Championship Series and Steve Bartman became infamous for apparently interfering JAMES LEFLAIRE with a foul ball during AUSTIN RESIDENT a critical moment in the eighth-inning of game six. The Cubs went on to lose both games to the eventual champions, the Florida Marlins. “He saw them in the playoffs [in 2003] and he died at the end of that year,” LeFlaire said of his late grandfather. “When they won [on Wednesday], though, the first person thought about was my grandpa. He was the first person who came to my mind. I knew he was upstairs in heaven with wings coming out a Cubs jersey, going crazy. On my life.” Richard Driver, 52, said his father also passed in 2003. He and his father, Driver said, would watch Cubs games together all the time. “I was hoping for a championship before he passed,” the Austin native said. “But I know he’s watching down now, smiling. I watched the game at my brother-in-law’s on the South Side. It was incredible. I just got down and was like, ‘Man, pops, did you see it? Did you see it?’” For most Cubs fans who were interviewed, that the team would ultimately prevail in a World Series was never in doubt. They just didn’t think it would happen so soon. Some, however, seemed confident that this would be the magical season. “I’ve been waiting on this for a long time and it finally came,” said Alonzo Spearman,

“I knew he was upstairs in heaven with wings coming out a Cubs jersey, going crazy. On my life.”

38. “I thought they’d pull it off this year, since they were consistent and they wanted to win. For Sam Gause — who was decked out in full Cubs gear — a win for the Cubs is a win for Chicago. “I was born and raised in Chicago,” said the 42-year-old barber. “I’m a fan of Chicago sports teams — the Cubs and the Sox. I’m not the type of fan who has to choose one side. Baseball is baseball to me. A good team is a good team. When the White Sox won [the World Series in 2005], I had their gear on.” Gause isn’t the only West Side resident who shares that sentiment. “The city needed this,” said LeFlaire. “We needed something big. It’s f—ed up right now. We needed something good to come out of Chicago. If you ask me, that win has brought down the murder rate already. Davis (7th), among others. Williams was a paid West Side field organizer for President Barack Obama’s 2012 reelection campaign. This year, she volunteered with the Clinton campaign. In 2014, Williams ran unsuccessfully for 29th Ward alderman. On Nov. 7, Williams and the Leaders Network — one of the many community organizations in which Williams is active — convened a press conference at Alice’s Restaurant, 5658 W Madison St. to drive her message home. When interviewed last Sunday, Williams said she hasn’t been contacted by any of those mainstream platforms, which she said could have at least blurred her photo or tried locating the identity of the person in that meme and allowed her to state that she has no affiliation with the people who started the controversy. Williams also noted that major news outlets seemed to overlook perhaps the most significant aspect of the controversy. “I also want the media to know that the vast majority of black voters are not naive and they know you cannot ‘Stay Home and Text in Your Vote,’” Williams said. “That Twitter meme was a racist piece and should not have drawn the national attention that it did from MSNBC, the New York Times, the Washington Post, Twitter and so many other online blog posts. “Rachel Maddow said that the meme was vile, gross and offensive, and the worst form of voter suppression,” Williams added. “Really? Is it worst than all of the laws and restrictions that conservatives use to stop minorities from voting? But the pictures of the conservatives who initiate and impose those tactics are not shown all over the world.” Williams, who said that she hasn’t yet explored her legal options with her attorney, said that she hopes she can get justice for the improper use of her photo. Congratulations to our 45th president!

s I write this column early in the morning on Monday, Nov. 7, I haven’t voted yet nor do I know who I am congratulating. What I do know is that this has been a very contentious election and when I go to the polls on Tuesday, Nov. 8, I will have to choose between the Devil and Satan as the person I want to see hold that office. And no matter which of the two wins, the supporter of the other one will be angry. The anger that has been galvanized is not something that can be ignored or taken lightly. This country is at a precipice from which there is no easy way back. How does one heal a country whose division by one of the major issues of the campaign — illegal immigration — has split the country into polar opposites? No matter what side of the coin one falls on regarding illegal immigration, it is a subject that must be honestly addressed. How our newest president handles the subject can either heal or further divide the nation. Job creation is another area that has divided this country. We have lost millions of jobs and how we go about getting them back or crafting new ones will be at our president’s feet. The internet has played a major role in this election. When President Obama ran, many were amazed at his online fundraising ability. It has been eight years since and with Twitter, Facebook and Instagram among the leaders in internet social media sites for getting information out to the masses, instant connection to the 45th president are here. I hope our newest president uses it for the good of the country.

Our next president must display leadership. There have been troubling times and there may be more ahead of us in the future. How this new president handles it will be telling. Will the 45th president have a strategy for us to feel like we are the United States of America? I admittedly am jealous watching other nations with different racial and ethnic types behave as one country. Cubans, Brazilians, Colombians, for example, no matter their racial heritage, see themselves as members of that country and not whatever racial/ethnic group from whence they came. Wars have traditionally been used as a unifier. But a country at war with itself cannot fend off those from outside, looking to do it harm, if the internal fighting is taking precedence. Lastly to the one who didn’t win, the voters (and I pray that we have had an honest election, where the dead, the non-citizens, and most of all the “hanging chads” and electronic machines recorded honestly the choice of the people) have made their decision. The grace with which a loser acknowledges it is more important than ever when it comes to this election. These are the only words that matter today, the 9th day of November, 2016: We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

The Westside Health Authority and Austin Chamber of Commerce are looking to raise money to attract economic development near Chicago and Cicero Avenues, but residents and businesses located there would need to pay a little extra in taxes to do it. The two organizations have applied to create what would be officially known as Special Service Area 72. It would include the portion of Chicago Avenue between Central and Kilpatrick Avenues, and the section of Cicero Avenue between Rice and Ohio Streets. Every property owner inside of it would have to pay an extra tax, which would be used to fund projects and initiatives that would encourage economic development. The Chicago Finance Committee held a hearing on SSA 72 on Oct. 28. While heads of WHA and the chamber touted it as a way to improve the area, many people at the hearing expressed concerns about the impact of the extra tax. SSAs, also known as Business Improvement Districts, have been around since the 1970s. There are currently 53 of them in the entire city, but only one of them, West Hum-
