On Oct. 15 Chicago Ideas Week hosted a conversation on what is called the “death gap,” a 16-year divergence in life expectancy for Chicagoans living in the Loop compared to those living on the city’s West Side, assessed in a 2015 Virginia Commonwealth study. West Side United is a public-private collaborative anchored by 23 health institutions and community partners with a stated goal of shrinking this gap 50 percent by the year 2030. Here is what we know so far.

Garfield Park Community Council, the City of Chicago and community stakeholders held a meeting on Oct. 22 at Marshall High School to review two design concepts for a proposed eco orchard and hear recommendations from a panel of experts. The $1 million city-funded project, organized by the Garfield Park Community Council, plans to inject a variety of fresh produce, like fruit and nuts, into the area.
Around 50 individuals attended the community meeting to get more information about the project and to discuss how the orchard can benefit neighborhood residents, and what sort of features they would like to see incorporated into the project. The audience was a mix of Garfield Park residents, urban gardeners, project supporters and Garfield Park Community Council staff. The meeting was the last of three community planning meetings. Ruth Pritchett turns 102 On Saturday, families and friends of Ruth Bell Watkins-Pritchett gathered at MacArthur’s Restaurant, 5412 W. Madison St., to celebrate the matriarch’s 102nd birthday. The celebration, which was facilitated by Reva Pritchett, even attracted the notice of 29th Ward Ald. Chris Taliaferro. “I want to say happy birthday to you,” Taliaferro told Watkins-Pritchett. “It’s a blessing to have you part of our ward. Everybody who knows me knows my love for seniors. It’s something that has been part of
my heart for many, many years.” Watkins-Pritchett, a natural songstress who was once part of an Alabama sextet known as the Watkins, is still spunky, even in old age. When asked how she feels at 102, the centenarian didn’t miss a beat. “I feel fine,” she said. “Oh yeah, I feel good.” And then she got back to doing what she loves most — belting out a hymn. “I woke up this morning with my mind on Jesus,” she sang. The Garfield Park Community Council, which also runs the Garfield Park Farmers Market at the northeastern corner of Lake and Kedzie, plans to sell fruit from the eco orchard. Currently, the market sells 3,000 pounds of locally grown fresh vegetables each year. The organization has actively organized to bring the eco orchard project into the neighborhood over the past five years, said Tomas at the Monday meeting. Half the funds come from the city’s Open Space Impact Fee Funds, with the other half coming from a green infrastructure grant from the Metropolitan Reclamation District to help mitigate neighborhood flooding. ■ The eco orchard will be located on 5th Avenue. The eco orchard will be built on two parcels—one at the southwest corner of Sacramento Boulevard and 5th Avenue, and one on the north side of 5th Avenue, between Whipple Street and Albany Avenue. The two parcels were selected because they were least contaminated and where flood reduction measures would have the most impact, according to Tomas. This site was previously developed by residents returning from the Department of Corrections as part of a two-year green job training program run by the Safer Foundation and the Garfield Park Conservatory Alliance, funded by President Obama’s Stimulus Plan. ■ There are two proposed designs that are being vetted. Both concepts include natural fencing, pollinator zones, edible shrubs along the perimeter, walkways and fruit and nut bearing trees and bushes. Garfield Park Community Council organizers said they intend to make the eco orchard an intergenerational space that is accessible to all. Attendees at Monday’s meeting asked for additional plans to include sheds for storage as well as a designated delivery zone for trucks. Lighting and electricity is not included in this project scope because of budget constraints, according Department of Planning representatives. This was a concern for several community members at the meeting. ■ Residents may get a storm water solution. The eco orchard would feature measures to address local flooding. The plans include native plants that will absorb stormwater, community walking spaces with permeable pavement and temporary storage areas in the form of bioswales and underground storage tanks. The project was able to qualify for the Metropolitan Water Reclamation

District of Greater Chicago grant because the orchard included plans to absorb and store stormwater that would otherwise go into local sewers. ■ The orchard will be run by volunteers, for now. Attendees at the meeting questioned the sustainability of a volunteer-run project. “An all-volunteer program is extremely hard to keep people engaged unless there is one, at least, part-time person. Things can fall to the wayside quick, otherwise,” said Ramont “Ray” Bell, an outreach coordinator for the water preservation program at Faith in Place, who spoke on the panel at the meeting. Gina Jamison, who runs Kuumba TreAhm community garden in the Garfield Park neighborhood and is one of the vendors at the community market, said that the Garfield Park Community Council needed to include at least one part-time staff member on the project. Jamison said she has 14 volunteers at her garden, and finds it difficult to rely entirely on volunteer labor to run garden projects. “I’ve seen gardens stalled once the leader leaves. If we can get someone committed on a payroll, that’s an incentive for success,” said Jamison at the meeting. ■ There is both community support and pushback. Though most attendees at the meeting appeared to support the project, the meeting got off to a contentious start when about 10 members of the D20 Army Community Battle Group, an anti-gentrification group in Garfield Park, interrupted proceedings to read aloud a list of grievances and demands about the eco orchard project. The group said that safeguards must be put in place to ensure that residents’ voices are heard and

Tomas asked the group to wait until the allotted community discussion time to bring up their concerns, but D20 members refused to stop. Eventually, Tomas threatened to call the police and the group—which had appeared at previous eco orchard discussions—left the meeting. In response to the group’s allegations, Tomas said at the meeting that his organization has been promoting the eco orchard plans on social media since February 2018 and knocked on 2,000 doors to share information on the project.
Tomas said in an interview after the meeting that his organization intends to have more meetings on the eco orchard design to incorporate more community feedback into the project. Oak Park and Forest Park residents may have noticed a woman walking around the two villages in recent week with an exceptionally large smile on her face – more noteworthy, perhaps, is the 40 pounds of electronic equipment strapped to her back. “What is that thing?” people are constantly asking Austin resident Erin Bender as she walks around with a Google Trekker Street View backpack, capturing public spaces for the tech company. “A lot of people ask you what it is, but a lot of people already know,” she said in a recent interview. She makes $17.50 an hour walking around the city and its suburbs; she usually does about five miles a day, she said. “It’s not bad. I walk all over Chicago,” she said. “I’ve been in Forest Park and Evanston. It just depends.” Bender has been with Google for about two months now. She found the job on the temp staffing website Adecco. She is equipped with the trekker backpack and given a digital map to follow. The company gives her options for where she wants
to walk on any given day, she said. She noted that the backpack is equipped with cameras that give a 360-degree view of the area and one that points to the sky. “They have cars, too …” she said, but added that she likes the pay for walking with the trekker and added, “I’m getting exercise.” Prior to her gig with Google, Bender was working in the meat department at a JewelOsco, she said. A search of Adecco’s job-search website (www.adeccousa.com) revealed that the company is still searching for trekkers. “Operators are given the task of going to public and private areas specified by the client or partner, specifically targeting paths, attractions and other points of interest in the given area,” the job description notes. Trekkers must be able to carry 40 pounds of camera equipment on their back and be on their feet for most of the day, according to the job posting. Among other requirements, employees “must be able to deal with the public in a calm and rational manner.” That doesn’t appear to be a problem for Bender. tim@oakpark.com

It’s been just over a year since Oak Park police busted a convenience store employee at the corner of Chicago Avenue and Austin Boulevard, charging him with 17 counts of heroin sales and possession. The village of Oak Park revoked Austin Pantry’s business license and an appeal was denied by the Oak Park Business License Appeal Board last October. Residents and other business owners in the area said drug dealing out of the store at 1 Chicago Ave. was only part of the problem with Austin Pantry. The sales brought more drug dealing outside the establishment for several months prior to the arrest of Austin Pantry employee Edgar Lucas. But now, the shop at 1 Chicago Ave., which has been vacant for over a year, will soon become a dentist’s office, according to a press release from David King & Associates, which brokered the deal. Destiny Dental Care will not only take the storefront at the former Austin Pantry but also the adjacent A+ Cuts barber shop to the west. That barber shop already has located half a block away to 22 Chicago Ave., opening under the name Rayzor’s Edge Cuts. The dentist’s office will take the entire 2,100-square-foot storefront in the 110-yearold mixed-use building, according to King. It is expected to open in the first quarter of 2019. The owner of the property, Ali ElSaffar, who also serves as Oak Park Township Assessor, said in a telephone interview that he has renovated the building, installing new windows to the storefront and removing asbestos tiles, among other improvements. He tells Wednesday Journal he “wanted to turn that corner around.” ElSaffar expressed regret about the arrest

DENTIST OFFICE COMING: A dentist’s office will replace the former Austin Pantry, which was closed last year when one of its employees was busted selling heroin out of the establishment. made in 2017, noting that he purchased the property in the mid-1990s with the goal of making a good investment and doing something good for the neighborhood. “That’s why I felt so bad, because the opposite of my goal is what happened,” he said, adding, “I wanted to make sure it never happens again.” He noted that Destiny Dental, which has 22 locations in the Midwest, accepts most insurance including Medicaid. Illinois expanded Medicaid to include reimbursement of dental costs in 2014 and further expanded coverage for preventative dental care in the summer of 2018. ElSaffar said the dentist’s office is a good compliment to Oak Street Health, a healthcare provider that accepts Medicaid at 18 Chicago Ave. tim@oakpark.com

My thoughts on elections
or the first time in my entire life, the act of voting in a gubernatorial election is one I don’t look forward to. In the state of Illinois, the two main choices for governor can easily be renamed ‘Slime’ and ‘Slimier.’ We have two extremely rich men who have not been career politicians vying to run the state. Of the two, one looks like a massive coronary that could hit and take him out at any moment. And with all of his money, it says a lot about what he thinks of his body. When the rest of us go morbidly obese, we blame eating cheap chips and drinking soda as the cause. But when a billionaire who has access to money, nutritionists and health-care workers and the like goes obese, it is not because he couldn’t afford to do better! After holding my nose to cast my vote for governor, I’ll have to hold it even tighter to vote for attorney general. Neither candidate stood out as a winner to me. But one of them has used some extremely tacky maneuvers to try to highlight the candidacy over Facebook. Rather than make me want to vote, it has pushed me in the exact opposite direction. I wonder how many of you got the huge flyer in the mail telling you to vote Democratic, and to re-elect every Democratic judge except for one? Well if you go to
Facebook, and go to either the Maze Jackson page or Mark Wallace’s page from WVON, you will find that they have listed a voters guide for the judges. One of my friends early-voted and said it took him 45 minutes, even though he used a number of different sources as references, to get through the ballot. That doesn’t bode well for me because I do like to vote on Election Day. However, this year I am seriously considering early-voting. I work too far away to vote in the morning before I need to leave to go to work, and then coming back home I normally have something else to do. So it makes sense at least this time for me to early-vote. This election is also known as the midterm elections. There will be a number of senators, Congresspeople and others who may not get re-elected. Unfortunately in the state of Illinois, neither one of our senators was up for re-election. However every Congressperson is. A reminder, the mayoral election will follow next year. With the current mayor not running, it is going to be an opportunity for a multitude of candidates to test the waters. We need to make sure we turn out in massive numbers and vote for the person who will run the city and control our future for the next four years.

One hundred purple balloons floated up into the air to symbolize an end to domestic violence. Over 50 men gathered earlier this month to sign a pledge against domestic violence at the Westside Community Triage Center, 4133 W. Madison Ave. This was part of the “100 Man Stand Challenge,” where participants pledged to stand up against all acts of violence. They also pledged to teach younger generations about respecting one another. “The thing about domestic violence is it’s often times swept under the rug,” said Cook County Commissioner Dennis Deer. “We’re here to publicly denounce domestic violence and all types of violence.” This year alone, there have been 976 reported assault crimes according to the city of Chicago’s data portal. There were 989 reported assaults at this time in 2017. The event also highlighted how the new community center provides services for those involved in domestic violence. They offer a variety of services, such as mental health programs and emergency housing. “A one-time event is not going to have the lasting impact that we need to have within
this community,” said Dr. Rashad K. Saafir, president and CEO of the Bobby E. Wright Comprehensive Behavioral Health Center. “We open our facility to you.” Saafir said domestic violence transcends homes — and it affects communities as well. This violence can fragment a family and create damaged homes for children to grow up in, Saafir said. In turn, it makes children vulnerable to other negative influences within the community, he added. “I think it’s critically important that we address this issue from both a mental health standpoint and from a public health standpoint, so that we can we end the terrible effects … domestic violence has on children,” Saafir said. Deer, the vice president of the Illinois Coalition Against Domestic Violence, highlighted a need to shift the mentality among men. If someone is feeling angry, they should reexamine the cause of the anger and instead use that energy to feel empowered, he said. “Anger is just like gasoline,” Deer said. “You can pour it on your car and set it on fire, or you can put it in your car.” Roosevelt Walker said he took the pledge because it’s a way for people to take ownership of the issue. Having the physical pledge card to look at makes it easier for people to adhere to, he added. “If you stop it in the house, then maybe that kid who will grow up to be a teenager will listen to his feelings and not want to pick up a gun,” Walker said. For instance, the geography of life expectancy differences across the city directly correlate to heat maps of average income change from 1970-2010, according to Shannon.

Ansell estimated the capital gap on the West Side, the figure that would need to be invested to bring the median income up to middle- class levels, at $70 billion. Ayesha Jaco, senior program director at West Side United, said that most of the economic opportunities migrants pursued when coming from the Jim Crow South no longer exist, and that this changed situation has a direct impact on life expectancy. West Side United has adopted a strategy focused on economic revitalization that includes impact investing, small business support and development, local hiring and procurement and building career pipelines with multiple points of entry. Demand has far outstripped availability for the career opportunities that have been created at member institutions in West Side United’s first year. One of West Side United’s more ambitious goals is building enough partnerships to offer 20,000 summer jobs and internships for West Side youth which can put them on educational and career paths. Conversations about life and death on the South and West Sides of Chicago frequently devolve into sensationalism around gun violence. In fact, the two leading causes of death among adults on the West Side are cancer and heart disease, according to Ansell, both at rates which indicate deeper truths about structural violence and racial inequity. In 2017, the collaborative that would become West Side United hosted a listening tour across West Side communities after an initial meeting for community feedback. After speaking with around 500 residents in 21 locations, the priorities which emerged were much more expansive than prevailing ideas about violence in the city. Residents’ top concerns were (starting with most important) jobs; investment in local businesses and entrepreneurs; youth engagement, including partnerships in education and youth enrichment; and mental health resources.
