Ford exploring mayoral run State rep says he was nudged by Westside Black Elected Officials By MICHAEL ROMAIN Editor
A prominent Austin elected official is considering entering an already crowded race for Chicago mayor and he believes he could get the backing of most West Side elected officials. State Rep. La Shawn K. Ford (8th) said during an interview over the weekend that he currently has volunteers circulating petitions and that an exploratory committee has formed to vet the feasibility of a possible mayoral run. “It appears we’ve been getting a great response,” Ford said. “I’m hoping to make an announcement in the next week or two.” Ford said his flirtation with running for mayor was “sparked” after Westside Black Elected Officials, an organization comprising African-American lawmakers from across the West Side, voted unanimously to support his exploratory committee. Ford said U.S. Rep. Danny K. Davis (7th) had been at the top of the organization’s list as the person they would back to run for mayor, but Davis declined the offer, clearing the way for Ford — the See FORD RUN on page 6

According to a statement released by Lift Life, Michele Clerk was chosen because of its’ “compelling” video application, as well as the fact that, in spite of being located in an area “that struggles with crime and economic conditions,” the school was able to achieve a 100 percent graduation rate. The Sept. 28 grand opening was about
more than just getting students some new fitness equipment. The space was named after Carolyn Brown, a long-time Michelle Clark resource officer, who died before the renovations could be completed. Her fellow officers, school staff and loved ones all attested to Brown’s character and the impact she made on students, adding that they couldn’t think of a better tribute to her than a space that would make the students’ lives better. During the assembly that took place ahead of the opening, Dylan Cooper, the director of Lift Life Foundation, said that in the months following the decision the renovations faced many roadblocks, but they kept going. “We couldn’t give up on this school no matter what,” he said. “This is not just us, this is not just me, this is the great group of people [who] wanted to give back to the community.”

The new fitness center includes a large weight room and a smaller space with running equipment. Michelle Clark Principal Charles Anderson, Jr. said that he was “totally amazed” by how the space turned out. “I am so excited so proud, and I’m so happy to keep [Brown’s] legacy going,” he said. Anderson also noted that the fitness center wasn’t just for students. “It’s for the entire staff, and teachers and parents,” he said. “We’re going to all be fit.” Derrick Barnes, a junior football player, was among the first students to get into the fitness center and try out the fitness equipment. He said that what he saw was a huge upgrade compared to what the room was like before. “I can’t put it into words how [much things have changed for the better],” he said. “We didn’t have a weight room, there wasn’t much to work with.” Barnes said that he appreciated what Lift Life Foundation and Optimum Nutrition did for his school, saying that it was great to see companies give back. He added that he thought the new fitness center would be a great benefit not just to his team, or even for the student body in general, but for the community as a whole. Karen Lasose, a junior and a member of the school’s track and field team, had similar thoughts. “It’s amazing, it’s going to help us a lot,” she said, adding, somewhat tongue-in-check, that their coach was going to overwork them now that they got all the new equipment. Given who the fitness center was named after, it was only natural that many officers, including several commanders, attended the opening. The 15th District Commander Ernest Cato praised Brown for her involvement with Michelle Clark students and the energy and dedication she brought to the job.
“Officer Carolyn Brown was definitely a very strong officer who provided a lot of hope for her school,” he said, adding that she did what all officers should try to do — get so involved in the community they serve that they become part of the community’s fabric.” Brittany Johnson, Brown’s daughter, said that, while she was incredibly honored to have the room named after her mother, she felt that her mother would not have wanted all of the attention. “Knowing my mom, she would have hated that it was about her and not [entirely] about the kids,” Johnson reflected. “She loved the kids and just to see their faces, their reactions, is incredible.” Johnson recalled that her mother was more than just a resource officer, she also coached some sports was “really involved with Michelle Clark.” Dr. Annette Gurley, who served as a principal at Michele Clark between 2001 and 2007, described Brown as tough, but fair. Students could come to Brown with their problems before they would escalate. At the same time, Brown didn’t hesitate to arrest students when she felt it was necessary. But even then, Gurley said, Brown and her fellow resource officers tried to help the students. The former principal recalled how the resource officers took a girl that they arrested several times under their wings, buying her a prom dress and sending her care packages while she was away at college. “[That girl] is now a practicing nurse, all because they saw that she wasn’t just a rough kid they kept arresting,” Gurley said. Grassroots appeal? from page 1 group’s second choice. Davis could not be immediately reached on Monday morning for comment. Ford said Ald. Chris Taliaferro (29th) made the motion while Ald. Walter Burnett (27th) seconded. When reached by phone on Monday morning, Taliaferro referred questions about the process to Ald. Emma Mitts (37th), the chairman of West Side Black Elected Officials. Mitts could not immediately be reached on Monday morning for comment. “Maybe they’ll say they don’t like the findings of the exploratory committee, but what’s great is that they feel I’m qualified enough to run; otherwise they wouldn’t have [endorsed the exploratory committee],” said Ford, adding that if he decides to join the race, his candidacy would be a “strong community grassroots campaign,” noting that his record in Springfield “proves I’m pretty independent and not controlled by any party.” The longtime state legislator, who was first elected to the General Assembly in 2007, said he thinks “it’s important that the black community has someone willing to raise the issues for black people and bring the city together. I’m not afraid to talk about the
struggles of black people in a way that lets white people know we’re in it together and that the black struggle is their struggle, and the brown struggle is our struggle.” When asked if he thinks his 2014 misdemeanor income tax charge would be a problem, Ford said he hopes to leverage the issue in order to raise awareness of criminal justice reform. In 2012, Ford, who owns a real estate company, was indicted on 17 felony bank fraud and false information charges after allegations that he submitted misleading information in order to obtain an additional $500,000 on a line of credit. Two years later, prosecutors dropped all 17 felony counts in exchange for the lawmaker pleading guilty to the misdemeanor charge. “I’m looking forward to making sure that people understand I have knowledge and experience with the criminal justice system,” Ford said. “I was wrongfully charged and 17 counts of bank fraud were dropped,” he said. “I think this is the perfect way to bring criminal justice reform front and center. It’s one of the [top] issues in the state and the country, but for some reason it doesn’t get the attention that’s needed.” Ford also said that, if he runs and is elected, his administration “will build schools in communities left behind” and implement more community engagement than the current administration. “We really don’t need to constantly have a dictatorial, strong mayor not listening to the

County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, former Chicago Police commissioner Gary McCarthy, former CPS CEO Paul Vallas, and former Police Board president Lori Lightfoot. So far, Amara Enyia, the head of the Austin Chamber of Commerce, is the most highprofile, black, West Side resident to have declared her candidacy. first met Alberto “Al” Bocanegra back in 2002. I was running for alderman and like a lot of independent candidates, we had joined the mayoral campaign of William “Dock” Walls. I remember Al as a spirited and opinionated young man who had a lot of vision for Chicago in general and especially his Mexican-American community. I remember he invited me to a party in his backyard where I met both his mother and father. Four years later in 2006, we again all got together. I was running for alderman for a second time and Dock Walls was again running for mayor. We became part of a group called the Committee for a Better Chicago. Facebook was in its infancy, and Alberto and I became Facebook friends. On the surface, it seemed like Alberto and I had a lot of mutual agreements. And in reality, it was true. But there was one issue on which we were totally opposite. And that was the subject of illegal immigration. Alberto was in favor of it; I was against it. I don’t recall all the details of a heated Facebook conversation we had. Alberto was young and idealistic, and I had to bust his bubble by telling him that Cesar Chavez had marched on the border against illegal immigration. I can still remember the picture in Jet Magazine of Dr. King and Cesar Chavez arm-in-arm marching to the border. Alberto couldn’t believe it, so I Googled it and posted him a link to a website that confirmed what I said. It was a shocking moment for him because as a young person in his 20s, he really didn’t know. That Facebook post subsequently became a very heated conversation. Several people I knew and had worked with on the mayoral campaign unfriended me because of the position I took. But Alberto didn’t. Over the years, there have been many subjects that we did not agree on. We would post back and forth, and eventually just stop because neither one of us was going to change our position. It was about three weeks ago, when Rahm Emanuel
announced that he wasn’t going to run for mayor, that I commented on how Rahm made his announcement on the first day of the trial of Jason Van Dyke in the LaQuan McDonald case. Alberto shared my post along with a comment that we hadn’t agreed on anything in such a long time. Alberto spent nearly a year in Northwestern Hospital, fighting cancer. I would occasionally check in on him, asking how he was doing. I was amazed when just a couple of months ago he was released. He had beaten cancer and won the battle. Unfortunately, winning the battle against cancer is easier than winning a battle against the dangers out here on Chicago’s streets. Early in the morning of Wednesday, Sept. 26, Alberto was following a group of bicyclists. He saw a car hit a bicyclist. He chased the car and got into an argument with the driver. It appears the driver called a friend because a third vehicle showed up, a blue SUV. The coward in that blue SUV had a gun and shot Alberto twice in the neck. Alberto was killed. Alberto did not deserve to die at the hands of someone who had no right to take a life. I pray that God smites that killer. We always like to ask God to save people, but I think it’s now time to ask God to take the murderers away. Those individuals do not deserve to breathe another breath. And I truly believe that if they knew that thousands upon thousands of people were praying to God for their demise, it would send a stronger message than anything else. It would make it difficult for them to close their eyes and go to sleep, for they might not wake up. Rest in peace, Alberto Bocanegra. I am praying that your killer joins you in death, not in heaven but burning for eternity in hell!

Austin church receives prestigious award
Third Unitarian Church to receive City on the Hill award from Community Renewal Society By MICHAEL ROMAIN Editor
An Austin church is set to receive a prominent award from a 135-year-old organization that “works with communities to address issues of racism and poverty,” according to the organization’s website. Third Unitarian Church received the City on the Hill award from Community Renewal Society for “outstanding leadership” that has been demonstrated by the church’s “dedicated turnout, presence and participation in every single area of CRS Work,” according to the letter from the organization notifying the church of the award.
The faith-based society was started in 1882. The goal of the organization is “informs, organizes and trains both communities and individuals to advocate for social and economic justice,” according to its website. Currently, congregations that are members of the society are focused on three priority goals: police accountability, commitment to anti-racism and a just economy for safe communities. The award will be presented on Oct. 6 at the society’s 136th annual membership assembly, held from 8:45 a.m. until noon, at the Church of the Good Shepherd UCC, 5700 S. atching this second episode took me back to my own days at Oak Park and River Forest High School. I thought of my readings on African-American literature in Michael Dorame’s English course, where I was first introduced to Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man, and concepts like W.E.B. Du Bois’ “double-consciousness.” I recall a chalkboard where Mr. Dorame drew a triangle to illustrate the three major ways that slaves subverted the condition of their involuntary servitude. They openly rebelled against their masters (i.e., Frederick Douglass), they ran away, and/or they resisted through subtle, day-to-day acts of sabotage, such as slowing work, playing sick or dumb, breaking tools and committing arson — the latter category

For blacks, codeswitching — going back and forth between this black/white binary — is a very real and rather mundane thing. Notice how Kendale McCoy, an AfricanAmerican student who plays drums in the marching band and also wrestles (and whose effort to lose weight in order to land a starting position on OPRF’s top-ranked wrestling team is the second episode’s biggest narrative hook) describes his experience among his closest white friends in band. “I can’t talk about race, rap with my white friends as much because they don’t understand it,” he says. “Some of them don’t know who Malcolm X or Biggie Smalls is.”

The session includes a performance by musician Samite Mulondo, a Ugandan refugee who starred in the film Alive Inside, which tells the story of using music to reach patients suffering from Alzheimer’s and dementia. While helpful for those living with dementia and their allies, Bolinder says this experience is for the entire community “because it’s about the human condition.” For Bolinder, Oak Park is particularly well-suited to host the ChangingAging Tour. “I’m learning that Oak Park is a unique community, and it has contributed two things to our culture in America that are indelible. The first is Frank Lloyd Wright’s commitment to architecture. You see that at work throughout the country today. The second is McDonald’s.” Think what you like about McDonald’s and its food, but Bolinder points out that there are aspects of the restaurant chain beyond the cheeseburger, such as the colors, the catchy slogans and the entrylevel jobs it offers that are a cultural touchstone for our country. Bolinder says an overarching message for the community is that the ChangingAging Tour is for all ages. The cast is intergenerational, and Bolinder promises music fans that the “next Beyoncé” is one of the performers. “The show is for everyone. Austin gets spotlight in annual architecture tour

Every second weekend of October, Chicagoans get a chance to take a look inside of buildings that are normally off-limits to the public during the annual Open House Chicago event. And this year, for the first time ever, Austin will be a part of it. The event is organized by the Chicago Architecture Center, an organization that, until recently, was known as the Chicago Architecture Foundation. The organization works with building owners, elected officials and local community organizations to figure out which buildings will be open in any given year. Over the years, new neighborhoods have been added, and some neighborhoods have dropped out and returned. This year, 11 sites in Austin will be part of the event, including Austin Town Hall fieldhouse, 5610 W. Lake St., the recently opened Father Augustus Tolton Peace Center, 5645 W. Lake St., and Loretto Hospital, 645 S. Central Ave. Austin’s participation was made possible thanks to the Austin Coming Together coalition, which lobbied to have them included. The Open House is an extension a key aspect in ACT’s burgeoning Quality of Life Plan that focuses on improving Austin’s image. The organization hopes that it will not only expose the greater Chicago area to the great things going on in Austin, but also give

Although Austin has never taken part in Open House Chicago, the event is no stranger to the West Side as a whole. North Lawndale has been taking part for many years, with sites around the historic Sears campus in particular becoming a regular fixture of the event. Some sites in West and East Garfield Parks have taken part as well. Darnell Shields, ACT’s executive director, said that the Quality of Life Plan’s community narrative group reached out to the Architecture Foundation to explore the possibility of adding Austin to the Open House. “They have been really looking for different opportunities to highlight Austin, highlight the beauty in Austin as opposed to blight,” he said. “We saw it as an opportunity to bridge the gap between what the residents experience here and how their experience is being reflected in the media.” One of the architecture center’s board members, Tom Brean, has been involved in ACT’s planning process. He was able to facilitate discussions between ACT and the Architecture Foundation, and bring Shields and others to the table. Shields said that the center has been trying to figure out ways to be “more inclusive of other communities in the city, where people may not necessarily have the opportunity to see the sites.” And given that ACT includes a wide range of Austin area stakeholders, they were a logical organization to partner with. Shields said ACT helped them select the 11 sites in Austin that are on the tour. Most of them are located near an ‘L’ station or a bus route, because everybody involved was well aware that residents taking part in Open House Chicago often traveled between sites by public transit. Some sites didn’t make it in. For example, Shields said, they wanted to include Columbus Park Refectory, but it was already booked for a private event. This year’s Open House Chicago will take place on Oct. 13-14, and most of the sites will be open between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. on both days. Some sites will open an hour earlier and some sites will close on Sundays. Most of the sites are located near or within walking distance of Green Line’s Central/Lake ‘L’ station. That includes Austin Town Hall Cultural Center fieldhouse (5610 W. Lake), Catholic Charities’ Father Augustus Tolton Peace Center at the former Austin State Bank building (5645 W. Corcoran Pl.), Austin Community Family Center at the former Austin YMCA building (501 N. Central Ave.), Shrine to Our Lady of Fréchou, on the other side of Central/Race intersection (502 N. Central Ave.) and St. Martin’s Episcopal Church (5700 W. Midway Park). Further south, the sites include Catalyst Circle Rock church and school campus (5618 W. Washington Blvd.), Loretto Hospital (645 S. Central Ave.) and the nearby Assumption

be noted that visitors will not be able to look at every part of each building. For example, at Loretto Hospital, visitors will only be able to see its auditorium and a hallway where scenes from several TV shows were filmed. In response to a request for comment by Austin Weekly News, the Architecture Foundation forwarded a by the organization’s president, Lynn Osmond. “[Open House Chicago] attendees are discovering not only what is near their homes, they are exploring new neighborhoods across town and, in the process, changing preconceived notions about their neighbors,” she stated.
Shields offered similar sentiments. “We believe we’re fostering a positive conversation in terms of how our community is depicted, in terms of having most beautiful and more architecturally [well-designed] buildings showcased,” he said. “I’m hoping this will reinforce what we know all along — that Austin is a beautiful place and has these beautiful assets.
