LifeSpan Owners Orson and Keri Mor rison said Grealis asked for their values during the process of creating the mural. “We value diversity in all forms, we value community,” Orson said. “And we know that true healing and true w ellness doesn’t occur in isolation. It occurs in the context of relationships, connection and community.”Inspired by those three words, Grealis created three par ts to the mural: the first being “Collective Healing,” then “Diversity” and lastly “Community.” Grealis star ted the mural process in February and completed the mural on July 15.

The Nor th Avenue District chose to collaborate with LifeSpan for the Bridge’s sec ond mural project because not only do they value diversity and unity, but Nor th Av enue is referred to by some as the “Medical Mile,” said Judith Alexander, chairwoman of the Nor th Avenue District Inc. Because the street is popular for its multiple medical facilities, she said it seemed appropriate to choose a major mental health service that helps heal residents of the community JAMIE O’TOOLE/Contributor A mural titled, “Collective Healing, Diversity and Community,” lights up the window of LifeSpan Coun seling and Psychological Services

Grealis gathered inspiration for the “Collective Healing” part of the mural from the dancers of the Xochitl-Quetzal Danza Az teca and Najwa Dance Cor ps, who recently perfor med in Chicago, according to Grealis’ ar tist statement. In their perfor mance, the dancers encouraged collective healing in the community and solidarity for Black and Brown people The second part, “Diversity,” prioritizes visibility and inclusion of people from all walks of life, depicting 12 fictional individuals of dif ferent ethnicities and identities who are sur rounded by LGBTQ flags and temples re presenting various religions. The third and final part of the mural, “Community,” re presents “the most neglected members of our communities clearly in the fore ground: those suf fering from homelessness,” according to the statement.“When I stand there and take a look at it, I hope that everybody’s able to see themselves in some aspects in that piece,” Keri said.

Janeicia Williams, 23, still remembers the NAACP conventions she would attend during the summers when she was much younger The experiences allowed her to network with other young leaders and gave her something pur poseful to do on trips to cities across the country, she recalled.

State Rep. La Shawn K. Ford (8th), the West Side Heroin Task Force founder, said he lost two close relatives to overdoses. “The thing about this disease is that it’s in ter national,” he said. “So no matter what color you are or what community you’re from, we are united today because it’s attacking all of our communities and families. I lost my fa vorite uncle, who used to take me to the race track and taught me how to bet on the horses I also lost my favorite cousin, who allowed me to cut his hair even though I had no clue what I was doing. Those are two dear people I’ve lost to the heroin opioid crisis.”

During the Aug. 30 meeting, Taliaferro said in June he lear ned that the Jewel-Osco and a healthcare provider were vying for the space in the development. He said that Jewel-Osco reached out to his office asking for support.

After the North/Harlem Sears closed, Seritage Growth Holdings, Sears’ for mer real estate ar m that was spun off as a separate company, hired Tucker Development to redevelop the original store site and adjacent parking lot. After several revisions, Tucker settled on building townhomes on the east portion, and expanding the original store building into a mixed-use development with a grocery store on the first floor After Seritage sold its Chicago properties to Chicago-based Novak Construction in Au gust 2020, the new owner decided to keep the parking lot portion of the plan the same, de molish the Sears building and build a new grocery store, two retail buildings and a drive through restaurant. According to Taliaferro, Novak hopes to start the construction of the residential portion this fall.

The center’s mission is “to reduce stigma and prevent substance use disorder among individuals, families, and communities, and minimize the overall health, le gal and social har ms associated with substance use,” according to its website. Anyone can request free delivery of syringes, snorting kits and other equipment. Sarah Goggin-Young, a recovering addict and alcoholic who overdosed 22 years ago, said she has been sober for 18 years. I stopped hanging around people who lifted me up and supported me That changed my character and it changed the trajectory of my life.”

Taliaferro said that he wants to organize a follow-up community meeting where resi dents will get to hear directly from Novak officials about their plans. He hopes to sched ule the meeting for the middle of this month.

In a recent interview, Judith Alexander, the executive director of the North Avenue District, said she wants to hear more about Novak’s updated proposal.

Ford and his Task Force are exploring the possibility of bringing Overdose Prevention Sites to the Chicago area. So far, the only two in the country are located in New York City. The loc ations allow people to use drugs in spaces supervised by professional staf fers who intervene if they see anyone who has overdosed. Proponents of the sites argue that they help prevent overdoses and decrease the amount of drug use in public areasRepresentatives from Live 4 Lali, a community recovery center in Addison, were at the commemoration to provide Narcan training for anyone willing to lear n and fentanyl test strips

Nonprofit leaders and elected officials across the west suburbs and the West Side gathered at Scoville Park in Oak Park on Aug. 31 to commemorate Inter national Overdose Awareness Day. Representatives with a variety of drug treatment and har m reduction organizations such as the Way Back Inn, the West Side Her oin Task Force, Live 4 Lali, NAMI Metro Suburban joined elected officials from Oak Park, River Forest, Forest Park, Maywood and Austin to remember people who lost their lives to opioid overdoses and to raise awareness about drug and overdose prevention.

Leaders unite for International Overdose Awareness Day him that they decided to go with the healthcare tenant instead.

Taliafer ro said that he hasn’t seen any renderings but that Pascen told them the business would face Harlem Avenue and it would have a similar footprint as the proposed grocery store of 40,000 square feet and two to three stories tall. He said that it was “a very reputable entity” in the healthcare field and would provide a variety of health services but the alder man declined to share any details until Novak has a chance to present its proposal.

The alder man said that he was “excited” to of fer his support, given the lack of grocery stores in the area. “[Jewel-Osco] wanted a full-service, community grocery store to serve as their flag ship location,” Taliafer ro said. But around three weeks ago, Paschen infor med Taliafer ro that a grocery tenant “was no longer the goal” and they were go ing with the healthcare tenant instead

Taliaferro said that he couldn’t name the developer, citing a potential non-disclosure agreement. He said that, while he personally saw the change of plan as “a betrayal” of the community that has been asking for a grocery store, he would put his feelings aside if the community wanted him to support the medical facility.

“It’d be great to have a job training facility, especially for jobs ofthe 21st century,” Austin resident Sharon Hartshorn said. Ideas for the space included a multi-use art center, a library, af fordable housing for young adults and a nature center. Austin residents also decided a candy museum encouraging education and fun would be beneficial or a walking trail to take advantage of the land near the factory. When listing what issues Austin currently faces, residents mentioned the fact that their tax dollars go to Oak Park because ofthe lack ofcertain amenities. They also said gentrification and the scarcity of posi tive employment opportunities and activities for the youth were an issue. “[The youth] think [Austin] is where their world begins and ends and that’s just not true. The world is much bigger than just the Austin community,” Hartshorn said. When the Mars Chocolate Factory closes in 2024, 280 jobs will be lost. Future meetings will address issues such as taxes, landmarks and history, and they will be located throughout the affected neighborhoods to hear everyone’s voices, said Seva Gandhi, executive director of Collaborative Connections.

The site is 81,000 square feet, surrounded by Galewood, Austin, Mont Clare and Belmont-Cragin.Atthefirst meeting, attendees were placed into different groups, each of which re presented their neighborhood, and discussed the community’s needs and how the Mars site might accommodate those necessities. The Mars Chocolate Factory includes unique features like the front façade and landscaping as well as a dedicated rail line on the east side to help deliver ingredients, Anders said. Prior to discussion of its uses, residents asked questions that will be answered throughout the meeting series, such as “What will happen to the equipment?” and “Are the next owners going to be as good of a neighbor and offer economic gain?” Austin community members took a look at Austin Coming To gether’s Quality of Life Plan to evaluate the area’s most critical needs. The categories ofthe plan include Community Narrative, Economic Development, Education, Housing, Public Safety and Civic Eng agement. Recognizing how those priorities impact the use ofthe Mars factory for Austin, residents decided the site could fulfill access to jobs and training, arts and culture opportunities, green space and a major commercial anchor.

Time to really get angry about the violence Over the years, the average age for criminal behavior has been decreasing. Where it was once folks over age 21 and mostly on weekends, it is sad to say that a lot of the crimes are being committed by children. It is no longer a shock to hear that the shooters were 14 and 15 years old. And carjackers? They are as young asT11.here was also a time when mothers would not allow their children to bring anything that the mother didn’t buy into their house. Sadly, those kinds of mothers are becoming rare among a cer tain element in the Black community. As we hear about the criminal behavior of these young folks, the outcry from the public is continuously, “Where are the parents?” My feeling is that many of those parents know their children are out creating havoc. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realize that young people who are up and out all night, are pretty much up to no good. There’s no way in the world a child can come in with new gym shoes and new clothing, and the parent doesn’t know. The kid isn’t working, so where and how did they get the money? And the old lie/excuse that soand-so lent me the clothes, should not be accepted or tolerated. Truthfully, many of the parents just don’t care I had somebody post a probing question asking when will all this crime end? And in my humble opinion, for the Black community it won’t end until Black folks get absolutely sick and tired of it. And from what I see, too many Black folks just aren’t mad enough. How many times can you have a child lose their life to senseless gun violence and folks cry about it but don’t get of f their butts to do something about it? All laws are man-made. And all laws can be changed. So to tolerate this juvenile justice system that continues to send criminal children back out onto the street is wrong. And if we stood up about it, we could make the system change the reality. I also strongly feel that we need to ban that N-word. I am tired of drill music where the lyrics are simply, “Kill an ‘N’, Kill an ‘N’.” For the majority of us when we hear those rap lyrics, we can’t even understand what they’re saying. But the young folks do. As for comedians, it shouldn’t be part of their joke routines. This is a serious time. We are approaching 25 years (quarter of the century) into this 21st century and our problems are self-perpetuated for the most part Stopping that word from going out over the public airways won’t stop individu als from using it. But it won’t be perpetuated in the latest rap song, rap music video, movies, TV shows, etc Next we need to start holding parents accountable for their minor children’s behavior. All that unear ned income tax credit money is going for things that have not benefited those children. And if we are to save them from going down the nega tive pathway, it’s going to take bold and strong steps and actions that a lot of folks won’t like. Those who don’t like it, will just have to get over it Lastly, if DNA freed the innocent, DNA can convict the guilty. Those cameras on the CTA train are showing details down to the pimples on their noses. So no longer can they create havoc and get away with it Let’s not just get mad, let’s not just get angry, let’s get into action!

How does it feel to be a parasite?

The problem of the color line remains. We live with the social accretions of racism, conquest, settler colonialism, imperialism, resource extraction and exploitation. We also now live with their logical endpoints. There are no new great frontiers to settle. There are no more mighty rivers or lakes to reverse. There is no new land to take. There will soon be no more soil to deplete.

“All, nevertheless, flutter round it. They approach me in a half-hesitant sort of way, eye me curiously or compassionately, and then, in stead of saying directly, How does it feel to be a problem? they say, I know an excellent colored man in my town […].” The problem of the 20th century was the problem of the color line, Du Bois famously wrote. To perceive the color line one-dimensionally as merely separating whites and Blacks would be to miss how the awful reality of the line as a complex social contract — one that implicated more than it delineated — bore down on whites and Blacks Blacks, especially, have to navigate all aspects of the separation, such that we become synonymous with the line, with the problem. We be come the illness and the antidote, the quandary and the solution (i.e., ‘If only he had complied’). We also become convenient scapegoats meant to distract the world from confronting the source of the problem.

The New York Times Magazine recently reported on Mottley’s attempt to persuade the International Monetary Fund (I.M.F.), one of the most powerful financial institutions in the world, to help her manage the vulnerable island nation’s billions of dollars of crippling debt Mottley “would have to untangle the relationships connecting the I.M.F. with the financial institutions that invest in countries like Barbados — a global financial system that simultaneously helps and preys upon countries at their moments of greatest need,” according to the New York Times Magazine article published in July “She would have to challenge the rules of that system and its powerful figures, who often struggle to reco gnize how climate change is altering the traditional dynamics of debt and development. Mottley would come to see the traps of that system as fundamentally unjust, born from generations of colonial rule. “Just as outsiders once pillaged the Caribbean for wealth created by the hands of slaves, investors in those for mer imperial powers now squeezed for mer territories for their assets, for access to markets, for interest on loans. And she would have to contend with all of that waiting for the next stor m, knowing she gover ned a dot of land isolated in one of the most vulnerable places on Earth.”Howdoes it feel to be a parasite? Black and Brown and Indigenous and poor people have been tor mented by this question for centuries. But as the Jardine water sample demonstrates, this is everybody’s question now.

“Between me and the other world there is ever an unasked question: unasked by some through feelings of delicacy; by others through the difficulty of rightly framing it,” wrote W.E.B. DuBois in 1897.

e problem of the 21st century

Abroad, Haiti harvests rainwater for households and industries, putting its residents at the highest risk of im bibing those toxic “forever chemicals.” The island nation is also highly vulnerable to the ef fects of climate change. And yet that small country, one of the poorest places on the planet, has few choices but to mimic the parasitic, fossil fuel-centric development practices of wealthy nations to feed its people and fortify itself against an increasingly hostile Mother Nature. That isn’ t for lack of trying. When Haiti won independence from France in 1804, the free Black country became a big problem for Europe and America. The French considered Haitian independence so problematic that they forced the small gover nment to pay them reparations for about 70 years. Over that period, the reparation payments totaled nearly $560 million in 2022 dollars, according to someMiaestimatesMottley, the prime minister of Barbados, another Black island country, also has a problem. How does Bar bados do enough fossil-fuel industry and growth-oriented capitalism to feed its people and mitigate the perils of climate change? How does it pay for critical infrastructure while also forging an alter native, ecologically sustainable path forward?

“Ecology deals with the balance between organisms and their environment — be tween human beings and nature,” wrote Michael H. Best and William E. Connolly in their 1976 The Politicized Economy “The issues posed by such a relationship touch the very survival of humanity on the planet Earth,” they add. “We depend on nature for air to breathe, soil to grow food, water to drink and to sustain vegetation, fossil fuels to provide heat and to power production systems, deltas to provide material for commodities. But if nature is our host, we are its parasites. We abuse it unmercifully, robbing it of nonrenewable materials, straining its self restorative capacities.” How does it feel to be a parasite? Black, Brown, Indig enous and poor people have grappled with this question forAccordingcenturies.to Quartz, a 2016 study published in Environmental Research Letters found “a consistent pattern over a 30-year period of placing hazardous waste facilities in neighborhoods where poor people and people of color live.”The Chicago Sun-Times reported in March on an organization called Coalition to End Sacrifice Zones, which announced: “that they cannot wait for a previously promised ordinance from the [Mayor Lori] Lightfoot ad ministration that would address the cumulative pollution burden Black and Brown communities on the city’s South and West sides face.”

eople in Oak Park, River Forest and many other Chicago suburbs get their water treated at the Jardine Water Purification Plant in Chicago.

ROMAIN There are no new great frontiers to settle. There are no more might y rivers or lakes to reverse. There is no new land to take. There will soon be no more soil to deplete.

According to a recent Chicago Tribune report, authorities at the plant produced a water sample in 2009 showing a much-too-high concentration of what scientists call “forever chemicals” because they don’t break down in the environment. The toxins are in everything — from carpets and cosmetics to fast-food wrappers and firefighting foam, the Tribune reports. They leach out of those products and end up in lakes, rivers, wells and soil. A study released this month by research ers from Stockholm University found that the “forever chemicals” are everywhere on Earth. Ian Cousins, lead author of the Stockholm study, was blunt when he talked about his findings with the BBC “We’re in a place now where you can’t live anywhere on the planet, and be sure that the environment is safe,” Cousins said. Last month, the Tribune re ported on the tragedy of Adam Cordell and Johanna Davis. The couple started an organic farm in Maine about a decade ago. They grew “10 or 15 dif ferent vegetable crops, ranging from lettuce, kale and spinach to fruiting crops like tomatoes and peppers.” They also grew heritage varieties of wheat, oats, rye, corn and beans. Last year, they stopped their efforts after lear ning that the farm’s soil, spinach and water had tested for “forever chemicals” 400 times higher than the state standards. The farm, it tur ned out, had been fertil ized with sewage sludge during the early 1990s, the Tribune reports. The sludge, a human and industrial waste byproduct, is on fields across America — from sea to shining sea — because “local officials, farm bureaus, university extension agents [and] even the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency” have encouraged far mers to layer it on the Cordellsoil.and Davis are afraid because the chemicals that refuse to break down are now in their blood at levels “250 times higher than the average American” and even higher than workers in some industrial settings, the Tribune reported. The couple has a 3-year old son.
