After major shakeup, West Sub pulled from the brink — for now

Parent company Pipeline’s new CEO says the Oak Park hospital is headed in the right direction, but still needs help

Things are looking up at West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park, if judging based on the hospital’s very recent history. In the last year, Pipeline, the safety net hospital’s California-based parent company, has made some significant moves.

In December, Pipeline announced the promotion and hire of two new CEOs at both West Suburban and Weiss Memorial in Chicago. In the last three months, Pipeline has hired a new CEO of its own, brought on two new board members at West Suburban, and contracted with two Black-owned consulting firms to conduct marketing and outreach.

And in just this month, Pipeline has gotten an infusion of state funding that puts it on firmer footing than it was less than a year ago, when company executives were talking about possibly closing the hospital, whose patient population is 76 percent minority. Around 61 percent of the Oak Park hospital’s patients live on the West Side, around 29 percent are in See WEST SUB on page 9

West Side vacant lot to soon become roller rink

The roller rink will be built along a troubled street in effort to use public investment and community engagement to deter crime, revitalize area

An outdoor community plaza and roller rink will soon be erected along a troubled West Side corridor. The investment is an effort to work with neighborhood groups to address multiple quality-of-life issues challenging the area.

Construction on the roller rink is set to begin in July at a vacant lot at the corner of Madison Street and Pulaski Road in West Garfield Park.

The location is at the center of the neighborhood’s main business district, but the area has become a hotspot for drug activity and crime.

The plan to build the roller rink was approved Friday by City Council. Mayor Lori Lightfoot said the project grew from “an effort of nine months of community engagement” with neighborhood partners.

The community plaza and roller rink was planned in partnership with the Garfield Park Rite to Wellness Collaborative, a coalition of several neighborhood groups dedicated to building a culture of physical, mental, spiritual and economic wellness in the neighborhood.

The investment can help tackle the root causes of violence in the area, said Garfield Park Rite to Wellness Collaborative Director

TJ Crawford. The roller rink and plaza will also bring a powerful community presence from neighborhood groups, violence prevention organizations and police that can help keep the area safe, he said.

“We know the type of investment that is needed. We know the presence that is needed.

We know the community involvement and leadership that is required for us to help the community evolve and turn around and recover,” Crawford said.

The roller rink will be funded with the help of $1.5 million in tax revenue from the sale of recreational cannabis. A portion of state tax revenues from the sale of weed is set aside to community projects.

In addition to the roller rink, the plaza will host activities and programs for young people, like chess, pickleball, dance, fitness classes and volleyball, organizers said. The plaza will also host events like farmers markets, movie nights, art workshops and open mics.

The Park District will provide equipment like roller skates free of charge.

Officials said the site was selected due to a “high number of shootings” over the past three years, and cited 120 arrests for cannabis offenses January 2018-April 2021.

The crime makes some balk at the idea of a roller rink, said Siri Hibbler, president of the Garfield Park Chamber of Commerce.

“It’s a very serious hot spot,” Hibbler said. ‘”How is putting our kids right in the middle of the shootings, right in the middle of the drug dealing, going to improve public safety?”

Ald. Jason Ervin (28th) agreed the plaza will be built in a “very challenged area” of the Madison and Pulaski business corridor, as there are “no less” than five to 10 people selling illegal weed in the area on any given day.

But the additional investment from the city will be a deterrent that will prevent some of the crime that happens there already, Ervin said.

“This use for active recreation, not only for our young people but also our seniors and other members of the community, would serve as a deterrent for some of the criminal activity that is taking place along the corridor,” he said.

A Black Wall Street on the West Side A weekly market inspired by historic Tulsa community an effort to jump-start local economy

A weekly pop-up market is creating economic opportunities for Black entrepreneurs, artists and business owners on the West Side.

The market, Black Wall Street, borrows the name from the district in Tulsa, Oklahoma, which was a historic epicenter of Black commerce in the early 20th century. Black Wall Street one of the wealthiest Black communities in the country until it was burned to the ground in the Tulsa Race Massacre by white mobs in 1921.

The Black Wall Street market, held 12-6 p.m. Saturdays at 3708 W. Roosevelt Rd., seeks to replicate the prosperity of its namesake from over 100 years ago, said founder Lavern Herron.

“When they started, they probably had just one store. … But starting small, if we have our minds focused on the same thing, we can make this much bigger,” Herron said. “This is really about creating a wave of economics and entrepreneurship in the community.”

The market brings together around 30 vendors each week to set up tables and sell their art, jewelry, clothes, ceramics, hair

products, cosmetics, skincare, health foods and other goods. Heron organizes games, raffles and performances at the market “so both the visitors and the vendors can have entertainment,” she said.

The market takes place under a tent at a vacant lot Herron purchased to try to make the unused land useful to the community again, she said.

“I thought it would be a good idea to make use of this vacant lot,” she said. “Use what you’ve got. Yeah it’s raggedy, yeah it’s a lot of trash over here. But with your own hands you can clean it up and build it into something way bigger than what we’ve been seeing.”

natural hair care company; Mona Lisa Pineapple, a ceramics business; and ChiCity Alkalinity, an herbal health company. Vendors interested in joining the market can call or text Herron at (708) 505-2045 to set up a table.

Maureen Burks, 80, started her business, Mo’s Art, in the past couple months after surviving coronavirus. As her business finds its footing, she is glad to have a place to showcase her work on the West Side where she’s spent most of her life, she said.

Burks has had a passion for art since she won a scholarship to take classes at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago when she was in 7th grade, she said. She does portraits and paintings of Black people as a way to stay busy in her retirement, she said.

“I’m an 80-year-old great grandma, so I have a lot of time on my hands. So now I do a lot of painting. I enjoy it, and it keeps me busy. As the young folks say, it keeps me out of trouble,” she said.

Most of the pop-ups and markets she participates in take place outside the West Side or out in the suburbs, Burks said. Having a local market gives entrepreneurs, artists and businesses an opportunity to meet each other and show the community the great things being produced locally, she said.

“It keeps the people informed of what they can get in the neighborhood. It’s a great idea that we have something like that in our area,” Burks said. “You get a chance to meet a lot of different people and they have a variety of things they sell. It’s interesting to see what people can do with their hands.”

at Black Wall Street. Her business, Gaia Designs by Q, is focused on holistic healing and traditional medicine. Her business grew out of her own efforts to “manage my own anxiety” without relying on pharmaceuticals, she said.

“I was really looking into natural ways of healing and trying to find ways of adjusting without using medications,” she said. “It’s our way of life. The business is secondary.”

Her company offers crystals, jewelry, herbs and essential oils that can be used for pain, anxiety and other ailments. She participates in a lot of pop-ups and vendor fairs, but there were previously few opportunities to expand her business to the West Side where she grew up, James said.

“It’s been really good to do something on the West Side. A lot of what I’ve been doing has been on the South Side because a lot of the vending events I participate in are on the South,” she said.

James is currently based on the South Side, but she hails from the K-Town neighborhood of North Lawndale. She wholeheartedly believes in the vision of Black Wall Street, and the market gives her hope that the West Side can once again have a thriving local economy.

“I know this will be something for the history books. It’s been a big step,” she said.

“I’m just proud.. I was able to participate.”

Austin Harvest is raising money to build a permanent structure at the site of the outdoor market. Construction could begin by the fall. To make a donation to support the building, go to the Austin Harvest fundraiser page.

The original cohort of teenagers who created Austin Harvest also recruited younger students to carry the torch since they will eventually graduate. Four teens joined the group to run the market and carry on all the valuable lessons picked up by the founders through the process of launching Austin Harvest.

“Austin Harvest isn’t just a food market.

It’s a legacy and it’s a mission toward the community. We’re going to definitely need people who are going to lead and take initiative to serve the community like we’re doing,” Baker said.

One of the new team members is Alanna Choice, who will be a freshman in the fall.

Choice heard about Austin Harvest last year when it launched, and she was amazed local teens could have such a big impact on their community, she said.

“I thought it was really cool ’cause young people, really young people don’t get that much opportunity,” Choice said. “I thought it was really cool and I really wanted to join and help the community out.”

Choice is excited to help the market to continue to grow, and she hopes her younger brother will eventually be able to

participate too, she said. Austin Harvest is Choice’s first job, she said, and it’s helping her learn essential work skills and sparking an interest in entrepreneurship.

Encouraging young people to pursue entrepreneurship is one of the greatest impacts of the program, said Rodney Williams, director of entrepreneurship for By the Hand. The market partnered with the Hatchery Chicago and Alt_ to offer training and workshops to young people on business skills like social media and marketing, he said.

“When you train them on entrepreneurship, now you have kids dreaming of starting their own business,” Williams said.

The project has also opened teens’ eyes to the broader systemic issues that create problems like food insecurity and health disparities on the West Side, Baker said.

“We also want to start a reeducation of what fresh food means. Educating people on a systematic level how they don’t have the same benefits as people that live in more developed communities and realizing that … for anybody in the community, you should see that and want to take charge,” Baker said.

Ranting again

rarely get writer’s block.

Truthfully, I don’t think I’ve ever experienced it. I have so many opinions on so many different things that my biggest dilemma is always deciding on what to write about, as opposed to not finding the words I need.

So in times like this, I have to rant: Really, City Council Black Caucus? Renaming Lakeshore Drive to Jean Baptiste Pointe DuSable Lakeshore Drive has to be the biggest waste of time, energy and money that those folks could come up with. Yes, I think the man who originally settled here should be honored. But why not do something of true significance? Like renaming Daley Center as DuSable Center? Nobody will be using the full renamed street unless something terrible happens. I can see the news media now: DuSable Lakeshore Drive closed because of a shooting; DuSable Lakeshore Drive had a horrific car accident because of speeding.

Speaking of shootings.

The media, along with the moronic Black folks out here shooting, has managed to change the face of mass shooters from a young white male to a Black one. Lord help us! The end of days truly is occurring.

It’s amazing how shootings can happen and then disappear from the forefront of the news. Like the case of Jaslyn Adams. She was the 7-year-old child executed by some lowlifes at a McDonald’s drive-thru. People were upset. They gathered, held a vigil, and even included the new mourning ritual of a balloon release. Yet her actual funeral? No mention of it. I find that interesting. Or the murder of that couple in Humboldt Park following the Puerto

Rican Day Parade. Some folks jumped all over social media claiming that it was Black people who did it. Even dumber was the notion being propagated that Black people had mistaken the Puerto Rican flag for the confederate one. That is why social media cannot be trusted.

Some accuracy. When Alderman Jeanette Taylor, 20th Ward, and Mayor Lightfoot’s disagreement was caught on film, although we don’t know the words spoken, Taylor’s finger-pointing in Lightfoot’s face was among the worst optics from our elected officials. If, as adults, they can’t resolve differences in a better manner, then how are they going to tell these young people to stop shooting when shootings have become young people’s preferred method of conflict resolution?

No class. I have to agree with comedian Monique that it’s time for black women to stop wearing those stupid hair bonnets out in public.

They look like Poppin’ Fresh deflated.

Some good news. With three celebrations (Juneteenth, Puerto Rican parade, Fathers’ Day) rolled into one, many of the fears of civil unrest did not come to fruition.

Thank God! Death comes in threes. I lost three wonderful people this past week. First was Dolores Dupree. She volunteered with me at LaFollette Park with the Seniors on the Move group. Her death was followed by George McKinley, the former BEAT 2532 facilitator who was always involved in politics. He was the original Uber, working as a livery driver for many people. Lastly, my friend Victor Cochran. He was a character among characters. Give him a beer and a cigarette, and he was the happiest man in the world.

May all three rest in peace.

On teaching the truth about history

When I was in the fifth grade, this line staggered me: “One nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

I pondered it for weeks, and then, when the rest of the class stood up, hand over heart, dutifully reciting the pledge, I steadfastly refused to stand. This, of course, triggered a parent-teacher conference, as I ignored the teacher prompting me to rise and deliver the pledge.

My father already knew why, but wanted to hear my understanding and articulation of what I was refusing to do. I told him that those lines did not ring true, that I had been instructed not to lie, and that I simply did not see where liberty and justice was, in fact, for all.

As a child, I cringed in front of the television watching newsreel of dogs attacking Black men, women, and children as water, with pressure strong enough to pick up and knock down grown men, was brutally sprayed.

I remember when my television program was interrupted to announce that “King” had died. I asked what king had died, but the question was drowned out as my uncle cried, “They murdered that man!” My parents rushed into the living room, and stood stone silent, agonizing as they processed the senseless assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

I have vivid memories of my relatives, and ancestors; that father attending the funeral of portrays Black people in a false Fred Hampton, who was murlight; and that many of our kids dered at point blank range after experience as traumatizing to enduring a fuselage of bullets the spirit and soul, just as I did. tearing through the home where Our history and truths are comhe and others lay sleeping. Black people this; Black people that — insert something negative. Yet, even as a kid, I knew Black people were being maligned with a narrative calculated to be destructive.

So, what about the Black kids? Many of them have already been taught, in their homes by their parents, about Tulsa, other race massacres, lynchings, and the humiliations and perils of Jim Crow, and beyond.

What about the Black kids who sit, fuming, listening to ill-informed lectures and lessons that imply, with dangerous myths, lies, omissions, stereotypes, and inaccuracies, that Black people need to transcend their Blackness to succeed? For if those Black kids dare to contradict accepted racist orthodoxy, they are deemed insubordinate.

Does anyone care about the problematic education Black parents’ tax dollars support? We have gone from not having access to public schools and state universities that our parents pay for, to having access to schools that don’t teach the whole, unvarnished truth. Yes, pledge allegiance and teach the truth.

The plan will dedicate $8.9 million from the area’s special tax increment financing district to allow the Park District to renovate the park’s field house, make improvements to the Little League stadium, redesign the water gardens and restore the dilapidated powerhouse and stables. The funds will also be used to revamp the indoor children’s garden at the Garfield Park Conservatory.

“With Garfield Park being probably one of the largest parks on the West Side and one of the gems of the city … this major investment on the West Side of Chicago is great,” said Ald. Jason Ervin (28th).

Members of the Garfield Park Advisory Council commended the investment into the park, but criticized the Park District for leaving the group out of the decision-making process.

The council is a volunteer group designated by the city as a community voice for matters related to the park, but members said they weren’t invited to participate in the design of the park’s improvement plan.

“How are we on an advisory council and we don’t know about this $9 million?” said Carol Johnson, the secretary for the Garfield Park Advisory Council.

“As the advisory council for the community, we should have some input on these decisions,” Johnson said.

At the City Council meeting where the plan was approved, Ervin said the project was built from efforts of the Garfield Park Advisory Council to identify key issues and amenities that needed to be renovated at the park.

Residents concerned from page 1 According to a June 22 report in Crain’s Chicago Business, the company paid $30 million to buy the lot at the northeast end of Allied Metal’s campus, with the goal of opening the facility by the end of 2022.

While Amazon promises to bring a few hundred jobs to the community, the company has already prompted some pushback over concerns about the impact of potential truck traffic on the residential blocks further east.

Residents are also worried about the lack of outreach from Ald. Emma Mitts (37th), whose ward includes the warehouse site and the residential blocks.

The distribution center will be one of nine hubs Amazon is setting up in Chicago to speed up delivery. The company reportedly increased the pay for new hires at those centers to at least $16 per hour and is implementing sign-on bonuses of up to $1,000.

Allied Metal produces aluminum and zinc alloys and recycles scrap metal. The company has several buildings in the area. The Amazon distribution center would be located on the southeastern portion of that area.

The company didn’t elaborate on how many jobs it would create, stating only that it would be “a few hundred.” In a prepared statement to the media, Mitts stated that the company would create “nearly 500 full- and part-time jobs.”

Mitts added that the jobs Amazon creates will benefit the community as it recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The COVID-19 pandemic further decimated jobs and prospects for disadvantaged, yet enterprising adults and young people alike,” Mitts stated. “Simply put, if everyone had better opportunities to earn an income, they’d be less likely to participate in criminal activities, gangs and exhibit negative behavior.”

She said that Amazon isn’t seeking any city funding and “is deeply committed to social equity, [including minority- and womanowned firms in] development and construction, and hiring opportunities.”

The distribution center would be located south of the former Pile National Co. electric equipment manufacturer campus at 1334 N. Kostner Ave., which is being redeveloped by West Humboldt Park-based IBT Group into a “creative office campus” known as The Terminal. The company didn’t respond to calls and e-mails seeking comment.

West Humboldt Park Development Council spokesperson Ray King said that he is

Renovations to the Garfield Park Field House and Cultural Center will help to preserve the architecture of the notable gold dome by fixing up the drainage and gutter systems on the building. The Park District will also improve the building’s auditorium with acoustic and lighting renovations, Tostado said.

The funds will also redesign the park’s water court and garden, which was originally designed by Jens Jensen, the Danish landscape architect who also designed the Garfield Park Conservatory. The water court was renovated 15 years ago, Park District officials said, but they quickly fell into disrepair again and are currently unused.

The redesign of the water court will repurpose the two ponds and repave the surrounding concrete to “reimagine the use of these spaces while honoring their historic spirit,” Tostado said.

personally familiar with the area and that an Amazon distribution center could be a boon for the community if Amazon hires from the community. “[West Humboldt Park], especially between Kostner [Avenue] and Pulaski [Road], needs a boost, it needs economic development,” King said. “[Amazon] doesn’t need to outsource employment. I would tell them to make sure you take care of the natives first.”

Maura Madden sits on the board of Nobel Neighbors, a West Humboldt Park community organization, and lives near the southeast corner of the site. She said that she first heard about the deal in mid-April from a member of a “Chicago PD” film crew when the show was filming near her block.

“He said, ‘We love filming there, it’s a great location, but because Amazon is there, we can’t do it anymore,’” Madden recalled. “And he said Amazon is building a warehouse here.”

Since the deal wasn’t reported in the news, she figured that the crew member might have been wrong. Madden didn’t give it much thought until May 26, when she took a tour of The Terminal. She said that IBT President Gary Pachucki mentioned that the company was working with Amazon on sharing some parking.

Madden said that she was dismayed that she didn’t hear anything about the project

ahead of time from Mitts or from any city department. Madden said that, while she appreciated the company bringing jobs to West Humboldt Park, she was worried about the impact on residents like her.

“I think it’s going to impact traffic in a negative way,” she said. “I would like it if [Mitts] would have a meeting, so we could find out what’s going there, where the entrance is, where the trucks are going to be.”

Mitts’ spokesperson A.L. Smith confirmed that the alderwoman didn’t hold any meetings about the project, but that she will hold the meetings in the future. Smith said on June 24 that the meetings hadn’t been scheduled yet.

Madden also argued that there are other uses that would benefit the community more.

“There’s nowhere where you can walk for groceries, and there’s no good grocery store within 10 to 16 minutes of driving,” she said.

While Madden acknowledged that there is an Aldi location nearby, at 1440 N. Kostner Ave., she felt that the community would benefit from another grocery store that would have more fresh produce.

“I don’t know if Amazon is a good fit,” she said. “I’m happy that money is coming into the area, but we need other stuff beyond just an Amazon warehouse.”

Out of the woods? from page 1 poverty and 20 percent are uninsured, according to data the hospital provided.

“Frankly, I’ve been brought into this job to make sure our future is brighter than our past,” said new Pipeline CEO Andrei Soran in an interview Tuesday.

Soran struck a vastly different tone than the company had less than a year ago, when former Pipeline CEO Jim Edwards was pleading with state lawmakers for additional funding and other high profile Pipeline officials were in a war of words with some powerful local stakeholders.

“At this time, I must share with you that the financial situation at Weiss and West Suburban is dire,” Edwards wrote in August 2020 to Illinois Deputy Governor Sol Flores.

“Without dramatically enhanced and sustainable Illinois funding in the very near future, I am afraid that we will have no choice but to consider closing or downsizing one or both of these hospitals.”

The language seemed pulled from a familiar playbook. The company struck a very similar tone before closing Westlake Hospital in Melrose Park in 2019 — just several months after it purchased the hospital, along with Weiss and West Suburban, from Dallas-based Tenet Healthcare for $70 million.

Before the purchase, Edwards and other Pipeline principals, such as Dr. Eric Whitaker, had vowed to state regulators, media and lawmakers that they would continue operating Westlake as a safety net hospital.

Westlake filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in 2019. Last week, Crain’s Chicago Business reported that, according to the court filings in the bankruptcy proceeding, Pipeline was “required” pursuant to the acquisition agreement to shut down Westlake “by June 5” of 2019.

The closure prompted a series of lawsuits, including two filed against the company by the village of Melrose Park and a class action lawsuit filed against Pipeline by former Westlake employees. Pipeline eventually agreed to pay Melrose Park $1.5 million. At the time, Pipeline officials called the village’s lawsuits “defamatory and false.”

The closure also opened up a rift between Pipeline and local lawmakers like then-state representative and current Illinois House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch (7th) who lambasted the company, particularly Whitaker, in the press for weeks.

“Welch recalled that ‘every single time’ Pipeline Health officials spoke with hospital trustees during the purchase process, ‘they told us they wanted this hospital to invest in it, not close it. They said they believed in community, that they believe in the mission of community hospitals like Westlake.’”

Now, Pipeline is in the process of mopping up a lot of bad blood. Soran said Tuesday he’s committed to making things right, but declined to comment on events that happened before he was brought on three months ago.

“I can’t speak to the accuracy of those things, because I wasn’t there,” he said. “But I can tell you what I’m doing through a very competent CEO at West Sub and a CEO with a lot of experience in Chicago. We’re making sure that all of our elected officials know our status and know our needs.

“We are making sure that we have enough community representation on our board, which can decide the future of this hospital to make sure it is reflective of the community we serve. We’re also hiring an outreach executive who will be part of the leadership at West Sub to make sure that our programs are reflective of the community’s needs.”

In May, West Suburban Hospital added Rev. Marshall Hatch, the well-respected pastor of New Mt. Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church in East Garfield Park, and former Oak Park mayor Anan Abu-Taleb to its board of directors.

NOT QUITE IN THE CLEAR: West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park was in serious financial straits a year ago. The new CEO of its parent company says the situation is a lot better now, but more help is needed.

Abu-Taleb, who said he became West Sub’s board chair about two weeks after he left office, said the board is currently working on becoming more diverse.

“At one point, the board was not as functional,” he said.

“Now, we are trying to add value to the board. The hospital has not had continuity of ownership or management, so send a positive prayer to them. West Sub is really important to our communities. It matters to all of us.”

Anan and Soran said that West Suburban receives less state funding relative to other institutions. In an April 2020 letter to Pritzker, Edwards said West Suburban and Weiss receive “significantly fewer actual dollars per hospital” in Medicaid funding and “less funding as a percentage of costs compared to other hospitals who care for similar patient populations.” Pipeline officials have also said that BlueCross BlueShield refuses to appropriately reimburse the hospital.

A spokesperson with BlueCross BlueShield did not respond to this claim in multiple requests for comment on Monday evening.

Recently, Pipeline has contracted with Brown Farmer Media Group, a PR firm owned by Deborah Farmer, a Chicago media expert responsible for leading the Chicago Police Department’s campaign to recruit more Black and Brown officers in 2016 and 2017, among other high-profile contracts.

Pipeline has also hired Phase 2 Consulting, a Washington, D.C.-based strategic advisory firm owned by Lamell McMorris.

“All they can do is what they’re doing right now,” said Farmer, referencing the recent changes that Pipeline has made in the last several months. Farmer said that Whitaker is no longer with Pipeline. Edwards, said Soran, is still with the company as a vice president.

An outreach and marketing campaign called SaveWestSub, which included newspaper advertisements in Wednesday Journal’s sister paper, Austin Weekly News, and a SaveWestSub website featuring testimonials by community leaders like Hatch and the rapper Twista, was recently postponed — the ads were pulled and the website taken down — as the Oak Park hospital’s financial situation improved in the last two weeks. Soran said Pipeline is still working on striking the right tone with the outreach campaign, noting that while the hospital still needs funding he doesn’t believe it’s closing anytime soon.

“We want to set the right tone and we want to be truthful in advertising,” he said. “So, we’re still trying to ascertain the right formulation for support. The situation is evolving.

People are lining up and starting to help us and that may change how we address things.”

Soran credited Rep. Camille Lilly, Rep. La Shawn K. Ford, Speaker Welch, Senate President Don Harmon and Congressman Danny K. Davis for helping West Suburban secure $8.4 million in funding this month. The money is a combination of $4.2 million worth of American Rescue Plan Act funding and a $4.2 million grant from the Illinois Department of Public Health.

West Suburban’s new CEO, Barbara J. Martin, wrote Harmon a letter on June 4 thanking him for his efforts in securing the funds.

“Your support for West Suburban Medical Center and stewardship of these monetary resources makes a tremendous difference in the lives of our patients,” Martin said.

Eileen Lynch, Harmon’s chief of staff, said on Tuesday that Harmon has had at least five meetings with Pipeline and West Suburban officials, along with other lawmakers, in the last several weeks.

“We were in real dire straits, but the local elected officials have stepped up and helped us,” Soran said. “We’re in a less dire situation now, but we’re not where we need to be in order to have a sustainable entity. We need additional help.”

Soran said that last year, West Suburban was in need of roughly $20 million in additional funding. The $8.4 million helps fill that hole, but it’s not enough, he said.

He hopes the Health Care and Human Services Reform Act, the sweeping bill that comprises the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus’ fourth pillar, will also help. Pritzker appeared at West Suburban in May to announce the bill’s passage.

“The fourth pillar that talks about healthcare is of utmost importance,” Soran said. “I think the Black Caucus has done unbelievable work. I work in multiple states and this is, by far, more advanced than in any other state. I think the appropriations has not really started, but if those initiatives pan out, there will be much-needed support. There are very few hospitals in Illinois that do what we do in labor and delivery. This new bill secures some funding for providing those crucial services.”
